MAINE: College Kids Harmonize Beautifully To Drown Out Anti-Gay Hate Preacher With Elvis Tune [VIDEO]

The Bangor Daily News reports:

A man protesting against LGBT rights earlier this week at the University of Maine during the school’s Coming Out Week celebrations was met with a counter-protest: an a capella song.

The unidentified man, holding a sign printed with Bible verses about sexual immorality, had been standing in front of the Memorial Union on campus for some time on Monday.

A UMaine student posted several videos of other students engaging with the protester, including one of students singing an a capella, harmonized rendition of Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling In Love With You.”

“Anti-gay hate preacher” – triple redundancy?

    • Todd20036

Gay, white, male anti-gay hate preacher

      Quintuple redundancy

Minister can encompass quite a bit, good and bad. Is preacher ever good?

Nice. Meantime, the “religious freedom” case, Masterpiece Cakeshop, is moving forward. A good article on its implications is here (h/t Scotusblog).

    http://prospect.org/article/baker%E2%80%99s-toxic-recipe-discrimination

Supreme Court hears arguments Dec. 5.

    • Gustav2

“Moreover, there cannot be compelled speech if there is no speech: the nondiscrimination statute at issue in Masterpiece Cakeshop regulates conduct, not speech. To the extent a wedding cake produced with Mr. Phillips’ artistic talents coveys a celebratory message, it is reasonably understood to belong to the couple purchasing it for their celebration.”

    • AmeriCanadian

Here’s a prediction. SCOTUS will make their ruling narrowly apply to this case only, thereby punting the bigger question down the road for when Kennedy and Ginsburg are gone. You watch.

      • TampaDink

I hope that you are wrong…but I fear that you are not.

      • Phillip in L.A.

I think you might see something surprising! Legally, it is not really a very difficult case (which doesn’t mean it isn’t significant)

      And stop enabling Nazis.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Indeed…so why did so many on the left enable a misogynist thug with Nazi tendencies to win the election? I never seem to get a straight answer.

      • David Walker

Russia/US collusion. An unstoppable opposition able to rig our institutions and not worry about any repercussions. Taking advantage of gerrymandering. And we bitch now about party over country, but on the side of the liberals, there was the usual but too much purity over country. But I do think the “Russia thing,” as the fucking moron referred to it, had a great deal to do with it.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

Agreed. It was the perfect storm of machinations, mendacity and healthy does of naivete and a dash of complacent apathy.

Which suggests the script is pre-written, because we all know life doesn’t always end the way it does in the movies

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Oh, you know it was. I have no doubt the writers of this pernicious script started writing the moment Obama announced he was running, probably earlier than that.

      • marshlc

I’ve still got my money on actual manipulation of the vote.

      • Lawerence Collins

Either candidate we were forced to choose from wasn’t viable. Hillary’s record and precieved baggage did her in. Do you remember the 08. primaries?
Obama’s camp and even corporate media went after Clinton hard.
That was prevalent in my thinking. As I was a Hillary or bust person. My sister finally talked me into voting for Obama. In late 2015 I was reintroduced to Mr. Bernie Sanders. I’d remembered him from a decades old 60 Minutes piece done on him. I then went to YouTube and watched all of his old videos. His politics haven’t changed in over 50 years. Nina Turner was all in for Hillary, until she educated herself to what Mr Sanders stands for. She then switched. I was forced to open my eyes to what Hillary had stood for and what she stood for in 2015.
I know that I was not alone.
In the end I voted for Hillary last November. It was at the urgent request from a trusted progressive news source. Non corporate controlled media.
I sincerely hope this answers your question.

    • AC

Fuck Lawerence Collins, the poor little troll who doesn’t know how to spell his name

Similar assholery in WV today: Big Brothers, Big Sisters loses $60-80,000 in promised donations because they held LGBTQ training for their staff members. I guess a UCLA study showed WV had the highest per capita rate of teens identifying as trans.

Thanks. It’s a “need to know” thing, but…goddammit, ignorant people who are so self-righteous in their ignorance piss me off no end.

    • djcoastermark

Not good, but the only problem I have, is that the director of that chapter wouldn’t tell the public who dropped their funding other than “a representative for the donors ” .

      • jerry

Yeah, I noticed that. But I think they’re probably funded quite a bit–especially that chapter in Beckley–by religious organizations.

        • jerry

And if–whatever organizations those are–continue to withhold support, they need to be publicly named/shamed. Added: more importantly named/shamed since this would be at ground zero of the opioid epidemic.

    • EdmondWherever

But grabbing an autistic kid and dunking him in water, that’s a-ok.

      • Todd20036

Hardly. They need to dunked in a honey mustard sauce with a dash of garlic and thyme

Like the earlier story about the football players who turned their coach in for his homophobic BS, this gives me hope.

OT: Some of us were talking about crows the other day, HUZAH! There’s a really cool article about Crows over on Ars Technica today.

Scientists investigate why crows are so playful

        • greenmanTN

          Oh. I skipped ahead…

I don’t know about TerryTunes, but the MGM cartoons like Tom & Jerry had a disturbing tendency toward racism long after other studios left it behind.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

A few winters ago, a small flock of darkeyed juncos visited our patio. After finding some crumbs and seeds to eat, they played just like that, sliding down the side of a snow-covered potted evergreen. They took turns fluttering to the apex of the shrub then sleds in down the side. They kept it going for 5 to 10 minutes. It didn’t seem to have anything to do with survival; it looked like it was for pure fun.

      • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Ravens are very playful and significantly bigger. They are also very intelligent.

        • canoebum

I see ravens frequently when I go on my canoe trips in Adirondack Park. In addition to being larger than crows, they have fluffy plumage which covers the upper beak and their calls are distinctly more varied than crows. They chortle, whistle and hoot.

          • And for reasons unknown to humans, they adore pulling off wiper blades. I’ve seen ravens going from car to car pulling off the wiper blades dropping them on the ground and then flutter hop to the next car.

      • Phillip in L.A.

Crows around here heckle me all the time, when that big human takes me outside for a walk

    • Max_1

I remember your cool posts about crows.

There’s gotta be a word for a fellow crow aficionado.

    • DonnaLee

I love how it was pushing at the end to make the sledding go longer, like what I did as a kid with the sled. It would go only so far, then you had to human-plow thru it to make the tamped-down trench at the end.

  • misterjack

    Well done, children!

    That bigot looks positively perplexed.

    • marshlc

Yeah, I was really enjoying watching his facial expression.

  • Sporkfighter

Brings tears to your eyes, don’t it?

The right is all about violence and intimidation. No creativity, no humor, no beauty, just brute force. What a dark world they live in.
