On The Global Rise Of Anti-LGBT Crackdowns

The Washington Post reports:

This week, a government journal in the former Soviet republic of Tajikistan announced that the country’s interior ministry had compiled a registry of “proven” gays and lesbians. The list named 319 men and 48 women, whom Tajik federal prosecutors identified in operations they called “Morality” and “Purge.”

A purge — likely in the form of mass incarcerations — is exactly what human rights organizations are afraid will happen. But the phenomenon would not be unique to Tajikistan: Over the past few months, police in Egypt, Azerbaijan, Tanzania, Indonesia and the Russian republic of Chechnya have rounded up people suspected of being gay — and in many cases tortured or publicly humiliated them.

What’s more, many of the crackdowns look like “copycats” of one another. “There are a lot of ways in which these crackdowns follow the same sequence of events,” said Kyle Knight, a researcher on LGBT rights at Human Rights Watch. “And there’s reason to believe that what’s happening in Tajikistan now is based on things their government there has learned from, say, what Azerbaijan just did.”

The above-linked story goes on to note that the crackdowns have typically begun with a religious figure or government official publicly denouncing “deviant” LGBTs. Hit the link and learn more. The photo in the post is of the Chechen president, who started this most recent wave.

  • bkmn

And how often do these ‘gay’ purges target political enemies?

    • Tawreos

I think the better question is how often to they gather cheap political points with their religious bases with these stunts?

      • bambinoitaliano

        Always!

      • MT YVR

Gov’t going badly? Economy in the shitter? Find someone to blame and to surrogate the fear and anger.

On today’s wheel of misfortune…. GAYS.

    • Todd20036

Yup. My political opponent who is rising in the polls is gay. Jail him.

What? No more competition? I win reelection!!!

  • Adam King

And we have a government that doesn’t mind a bit.

    • EastCoastJ

Well….why should they ? Doesn’t the U.S. government (under every single President) constantly deal in a friendly manner with Saudi Arabia and Qatar and all the other Muslim countries that kill gays ?

  • pj

obamas leadership kept the lid on this movement. now with putin/chump all bets are off. and it will get worse to be sure. there is no pushback currently.

  • Smokey

One hopes that the horror and awfulness we are experiencing is a last gasp attack on the modern world by those mired in the past. For the sake of my Cub I wish it is so but I suspect it will be a long time before we enjoy a tolerant and peaceful world. Sigh.

  • Ziad Baaklini

They’re empowered because there’s not much pressure against them anymore. Looking at you USA.

    • LaChatSayWha

And they’re being actively encouraged by Bryan Brown and his friends whose hate has been embraced by reactionaries across Russia and the former Soviet states.

      • EastCoastJ

Bryan Brown has no influence on Muslim Chechnya.

    • EastCoastJ

I think Muslims are just doing what they’ve always done with gays, aside from what the U.S. thinks. Just that they’re getting worse.

  • another_steve

    Ohmigod reality is so depressing.

  • pj

gay people around the world will need to fight this. beyond a boycott of these countries and their products to exact a cost on these bastards im not sure what else can be done.

    • pj

i am sure about one thing that can be done and that is to pound these american based anti gay hate groups into the ground. they are very busy promoting hate around the world. they should be held responsible for the genocide they seek

      • 2guysnamedjoe

        How will that be accomplished?

        • pj

expose the money men behind them for starters. they dont like the light.

      • EastCoastJ

American hate groups ? No, it’s all the Islamic countries doing this.

    • m_lp_ql_m

Um, what exactly do these countries export, if anything at all?

      • EastCoastJ

They export a lot more Muslims….into Europe and the U.S….

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Any effective action would have to be on the international diplomatic and trade level. Like that’s gonna happen while that orange nazi’s big fat ass squats in the White House.

    • EastCoastJ

Until the western gay world admits the problem is Islam there willl be no fighting it.

  • Todd20036

Frankly, I don’t think Trump gives a crap about this sort of thing.

    But Pence might

    • BearEyes

      Pence would encourage it

      • Halou

Trump would encourage it too if he thought there would be money to be made in doing so. Pence will do it just for the warm and fuzzy feeling he gets inside knowing how “righteous” he is.

    • another_steve

      Astute comment, Todd.

Pence as President would be much much more dangerous than Trump.

      • DesertSun59

Do not be afraid of Pence. He was a political loser in IN and he’s now got so much Trumpstink™ on him that he is as good as politically dead now.

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

His brother just filed papers to run for what was Pence’s seat in Ind.

        • another_steve

I hope you’re right, DesertSun. Here’s my nightmare scenario:

Trump resigns prior to the issuance of Mueller’s final report. He declares victory. His deplorables applaud and call Nancy Pelosi a lesbian.

The “Republican Establishment” sighs a sigh of relief. Finally, an articulate Republican theofascist who’s had experience in government and can work the halls of Congress.

          Time for another drink…

        • 2guysnamedjoe

Pence could do a lot of damage as he finishes out drümpf’s term, post-impeachment / post-resignation / post-conviction.

      • LaChatSayWha

The thing is, we already have Pence as President. He ain’t that bright, he’s just the tool of the Kochs & this administration is already enacting the Koch agenda. But we only see bits and pieces of their coup in progress because there’s an odious, deranged, performing circus peanut flinging its shit around every day to distract us.

The danger with a Pence presidency would be that we will be so exhausted, and he will seem less aggressively awful, and the resistance will founder. We are being abused 24/7 & the rational response to the cessation of the abuse will be relief.

But hey, were no closer to kicking out the performing creep, so this is all academic anyway. You.

Please stop using the term “crackdown” when referring to these purges. It makes it sound like we had this coming to us somehow, like cracking down on some unruly child. Call them what they are: pogroms or purges or persecutions.

This is the flip side of our successful LGBT rights campaigns in the Western world and many lives will be unfairly ruined just for being gay.

However, our less-than-a-decade-old rights will mostly lead to their freedoms in a generation or so…we just need the last generation of religious dinosaurs to die off, and stop electing right wing haters like Trump, UKIP and the Australian Liberals.

          • EastCoastJ

Sorry. I thought since this article was about Muslim homophobia…

      • EastCoastJ

Why ? All of this stuff is happening in Muslim countries.

  • O/T: The Trump-led federal gov’t is sending boxes of unhealthy (and grossly inadequate) snacks to Puerto Rico and having the gall to call them ‘meals.’

    https://twitter.com/RoigFranzia/status/921403270035275776

    • Knowing what happens to human beings when they are deprived of shelter, medicine, food and water, this monstrous lack of attention will soon cross the line into deliberate genocide-via-neglect.

No wonder Puerto Rican officials are begging the rest of the world for help. Because the Trump administration and it’s FEMA can’t be bothered.

    • The_Wretched

It’s like the Trump admin is going out of its way to be as offensive and unhelpful as possible. it’s not like the ‘what’s sent’ is the expensive part. The cost is mostly in the movement of the material and distribution.

      • boatboy_srq

Offensive and unhelpful put Lord Dampnut in the WH. Why change now?

    • Tawreos

Trump gave them paper towels, what more could they want?

    • William

I heard last week that FEMA “meals” consisted of Vienna Sausages and Skittles.

      • I now suspect large swathes of our government—including FEMA, obviously—are being run by out-and-out racist white supremacists.

        • Falconlights

And you’d be correct in your suspicion. The racist jerks in DC would LOVE to get rid of as many POC as possible. Not giving decent shelter and food to the hurricane victims (basically everyone who lives in PR) will achieve that goal faster.

      • Gustav2

There is also a Florida company getting the contract for trailers that is at a residential home address and a blank website.

        • This sounds like an explanation for what’s happening: FEMA immediately contracting out to shady companies who then buy up cheap shit and claim it’s food aid.

          Kleptocratic kakocracy.

They’re making Brownie look like a consummate professional disaster relief manager.

          • Gustav2

With those food deliveries, did they give the contract to Walmart or the Seven Eleven?

Or just some vending machine company.

Normally FEMA purchases emergency rations from the same manufacturers that produce MREs (military field rations). The “foods” in the video are definitely not MREs.

      • coram nobis

It beats Meals Ready to Eat (MREs). Fun fact: they don’t keep well if they’re not kept at stable storage temps.

        • Eric in Oakland

I’ve been involved with R&D and QA for MRE components. The level of research, testing, and quality control that goes into manufacturing them is far greater than for any commercial food items. The quality may suffer under some storage conditions but they remain safe and healthy to eat. The shelf stability doesn’t depend on storage conditions. It depends on things like the product pH, water activity, packaging integrity, and lack of oxygen.

      • orion dumptee

Same for the applesauce and pudding. Bulk packaging, but still commercial.

    • Treant

They’re brown, so Dumbfuckistan doesn’t care. They can’t vote for President, so Trump doesn’t care, and they didn’t select him for the Primary so they’re going to get screwed.

Nobody who has any power is concerned by this. PR would actually do better declaring independence, allying with Cuba and Russia, and getting help from them.

      • William

Prussia owned a small part of Puerto Rico before selling it on to Spain. Germany should reassert its control.

        • Kruhn

No. They never owned Puerto Rico. You’re mixing Guam with Puerto Rico. The only people other than the Spaniards to ever own Puerto Rico were the Dutch for a few months in the 17th Century.

      • boatboy_srq

They couldn’t vote for Lord Dampnut in 2016. They’re moving to the mainland, where there are jobs and housing and electricity and food/water – and polling places they can use where their votes will be counted. The GOTea better start caring if it expects to survive to 2020.

Then again, if the GOTea survived to 2020 and beyond that would hardly be a good thing.

        • Treant

Voter suppression. They’ll get felony convictions for loitering or something, and too few voting machines (that are all broken) for other Hispanic areas.

      • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

I am STILL finding said dumbfucks all over social media who don’t have and won’t give a flying fuck about Puerto Rico. They think that because Puerto Ricans don’t pay federal income tax for wages earned on the island, they’re less than American citizens.

Of course, when presented with facts about federal taxes (like FICA) that they do pay, their narrative flips to the “lazy moocher” shit. Because brown people.

Being an anti- theist it is strange for me to argue that religion is not the problem. Religion is man made hullabaloo wrought to enslave. Religion itself is the symptom… not the disease.

Religion is bad because of those who create and follow it.

      • sirald66

          • EastCoastJ

Nope. Not Christians nor any other religion or atheist beliefs. Only Islam. Stop denying what’s right in front of your face, or I’ll start listing again….and you’re free to try to match the list with Christian examples.

        • EastCoastJ

          • TheManicMechanic

While Clinton (and Democrats in general) advocate for religious freedom, unlike the Repugs, they will not allow religion to be used to discriminate or harm people. We don’t have to worry about Muslims terrorizing people in the US, the extremist Christians are getting worse every day.

          • EastCoastJ

You don’t have to worry about Muslims terrorizing people in the U.S. ? Do you remember the Pulse massacre ?

          • EastCoastJ

          • EastCoastJ

          • EastCoastJ

Clinton would have been a disaster. Look at how well Muslim refugees have worked out in Europe (firebombs on subways and homophobia) and Clinton wanted to increase their population by three million in the U.S. ? How self-hating are the gays who voted for her ?

          • EastCoastJ

How about a Muslim deciding to burn a thousand gays to death by setting the Neighbors nightclub on fire ? (Luckily stopped by gay servicemen). Muslim homophobes setting bombs off at Uncle Charlies, and in Chelsea, in NYC ?

  • Is there anything we can do? I feel like we should be doing something.

There is, but nobody really wants to think about it, much less talk about it.

Gays will do nothing because they can’t even get themselves to admit that Islam is a problem.

      • EastCoastJ

See? Read the posts here. Did you ever see such frantic hiding from the truth ? That’s why Islam will be able to wipe out the gay populations so easily.

    • EastCoastJ

Yeah…first admit it was a mistake to allow Muslims to fill up the U.S., and Europe. What do you think is going to happen in the west when Muslims become the majority ??

  • It’ll be happening here, too, before long.

Court challenges are coming up to attempt to limit the marriage rights conferred by Windsor and Obergefell.

GOP candidates before just said they wanted to limit LGBT rights. Now a lot of ’em are right in the open about wanting to make being gay illegal again.

    • EastCoastJ

It will only happen in the U.S. if we become a Muslim majority.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

This is why I have always advocated for a covert LGBTQ team…and no, I’m not kidding. We can’t wait until they start rounding us up again, we have to consider targeted removal of those who advocate harm to us. The Mossad does it with anti-semitic terrorists and the like: as does the CIA, MI-6, even our Canadian CSIS, though all will never publicly admit it…and we should follow suit. The haters need to know the price they will pay for coming after us. Sadly, far too many of us simply tut-tut the idea of self-defense or pro-active action because they conflate it with being “just as bad” as those who would harm us. It’s not, so get over it.

    • Daniel E. Duclo

I agree 100%. I don’t think we can just sit quietly while religious leaders covertly plot to murder our brothers and sisters in the name of their homophobic god. I would gladly sign up.

      • EastCoastJ

No you won’t. You’re too terrified of being called “Islamophobic.”

    • Ernest Endevor

You don’t actually live in the US, do you?

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

What gave it away? And why would living in the U.S. make this difficult? I mean, 300 million guns and counting, it’s not as if it couldn’t be done. Also, I meant this in the global sense and a global effort. LGBTQ people around the world need to start considering pro-active solutions to the problem of Christian/Muslim purges of gays. Why shouldn’t we fight dirty? Sometimes you have to get into the mud….

        • MBear

Because “stand your ground ” only works for white str8 christian types

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

            Indeed.

        • EastCoastJ

Not only won’t gays admit the homophobia of Islam (in EVERY Muslim country) but they often actively espouse the U.S. and the western world should increase its Muslim populations! What ??

      • SDG

You mean the “in Canada”? LOL.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Honey where have you been? That’s what you get for missing two meetings in a row!

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

I’ve been busy with the #RainbowRailroad…spiriting as many as we can from the horrors of homophobic nations.

        • Phillip in L.A.

          Oh, right–sorry, I forgot you were “on assingment”–hope I haven’t compromised u! 💋

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

            🙂

    • EastCoastJ

Is Canada about to become a Muslim majority ? If not, don’t worry.

    • EastCoastJ

Dream on. Look at the imam who preached that gays should die and inspired the Pulse massacre. Did gays do a thing to that guy ? Of course not. He’s still travelling about fancy-free, preaching the same.

    • EastCoastJ

Gays, let’s face it, are useless when it comes to fighting back. The only chance they have is if allies get enraged. A lot of gay men must have straight brothers in the military, etc. Also, I think it’s a lost cause to try to do anything about the Muslim nations. Every single one of them has homophobic laws on the books, including capital punishment. We have to focus on revenge against their homophobic attacks in the western world.

  • William

Funny, watching five seconds of Ramzan Kadyrov video makes my Gaydar overheat.

    • Phillip in L.A.

It’s because there are no gay people in Georgia, or Russia, or Tadjikistan. Patriarch Kyrill told us all that not too long ago, iirc

    • SDG

Funny you should say that… ya… he looks a bit bear-cubbish… bottom type.

  • Paula

I think we are in real trouble.

  • Jay Mills

It can’t happen here: Tom Price’s wife, a Georgia state rep. and MD just called for the quarantine of people with HIV; the POTUS stated that his VP wanted to “hang all the gays” – *crickets* from MSM and his office; POTUS speaks at hate group dedicated to destroying all laws that protect LGBT from discrimination and advocates the return of death penalty for sodomy; Atty Gen. declares LGBT are not protected by any federal laws and may be discriminated against by anyone for religious reasons including fed employees. I could go on and on. Of course, we have to wait a bit until they have complete power by way of hard coup that will undoubtedly arrive sooner than we think.

    • SDG

Of course it can. The past few months shown the massive weakness in the US system of government. The president, has almost unlimited power, via Executive Order to do whatever the fuck he pleases.

  • Silver Badger

Pence is waiting to assume power and bring a purge to the US of A.

  • Halou

Notice that these acts are being committed after America abandons it’s place as the primary champion of human rights around the world. Only after the American president orders the UN delegation to vote ‘yes’ to the question “Should people face the death penalty for being gay?” Only after it was made plainly clear that western consent can be simply bought, just have your ambassador drop off some money at the Emoluments Hotel and you’re good to go.

    • Phillip in L.A.

When was America the “primary champion of human rights around the world”?

    • SDG

Really? I will stick with only current violations.

      1. Death penalty
      2. Racial inequality
      3. Economic inequality
      4. Lack of universal health care
      5. Police brutality
      6. Percentage of population under incarceration (and percentage thereof that are people of color, vs. percent of population).
      7. Constant and continuous attacks on the rights of free speech and assembly by Federal, State and Local governments
      8. Rights to privacy, with NSA, this is now non-existent
      9. Lack of labor rights
      10. Treatment of non-us citizens (torture, unlawful imprisonment, etc)
      11. Erosion of voting rights (especially for people of color)

  • goofy_joe

Started because of a religious or political leader making disparaging remarks about LGBT people…sounds kinda like the Trump administration & his buddies.

    • EastCoastJ

No. Trump isn’t Muslim like those in Chechnya and Indonesia…. Trump actually hires gay men, he doesn’t kill them.

  • EastCoastJ

Yet so many gay men STILL basically espouse the unrestricted immigration of Muslims into Europe and the U.S. Can we say “self-hating” or is that just too obvious by now.
