STOLEN VALOR: Pro-Trump “Navy SEAL” Hailed By Fox News In Viral Story Confesses He’s A Fake [VIDEO]

The Navy Times reports:

Navy veteran John Garofalo appeared on a Fox News segment this month, showing off a massive presidential seal he carved for President Trump while receiving praise for his service in Vietnam as a SEAL. The piece was broadcast nationally and featured cascading shots of all Garofalo’s medals. Online, it went viral, racking up 1.5 million Facebook views on Fox’s Facebook page.

“The Vietnam War veteran served seven years as a member of the nation’s first Navy SEAL team,” Fox News reporter Bryan Llenas said. “He was awarded 22 commendations, including two Purple Hearts.” Llenas later called the 72-year-old New York State resident a “tough, tough man.” “He was listed twice during his service in Vietnam as missing in action,” Llenas noted at the segment’s close. “God bless John Garofalo,” an anchor said. “We certainly hope maybe the president is listening.”

But when Navy Times contacted Garofalo Thursday, Garofalo admitted he had lied and never served in Vietnam, never received a Purple Heart and was never a SEAL. Garofalo said he had falsely portrayed himself as a Vietnam vet and a SEAL for years. “It got bigger and bigger,” Garofalo told Navy Times in a telephone interview. “What I did I‘m ashamed of, and I didn’t mean to cause so much disgrace to the SEALs.”

An actual Navy SEAL who pursues these “stolen valor” cases says he told Fox News that Garofalo was a fake ten days ago, the day after the show aired, but they did nothing. He then turned to the Navy Times who confirmed his claims today. Tonight Fox News has posted a “correction” and an apology to their website.

It’s not enough they make up fake stories, they even look for actors to play the fake roles.

Fox is fake through and through. It always has been and always will be.

I always try to write it as “FauX News” and have for years. I also remind right wing nut jobs in forums on occasion that there’s a reason it’s in FOX’s Corp “entertainment” division and not “news”.

My father’s TV is always tuned to Fox News. He no doubt saw the original broadcast about this phony. He does not have a computer or internet access, so he will never see the “correction” or “apology” on Fox’s website. Fox knows that a lot of older viewers are in the same situation and will continue to believe that what they saw on their TV is the truth.

They survive because of the stupidity of their viewers

      • Lizard

        Or at least, their isolation.

      • Nic Peterson

They survive because the rest of us willingly pay our cable or satellite service bills without question. If they had to survive on ad revenue and the amount of money that their viewers were willing to pay they would go dark in 15 seconds.

        • (((GC)))

She won the vote, by a margin of three million.

(Or would have, despite Kris Kobach’s Crosscheck scheme and other rampant voter suppression, if it weren’t for the “more representation for slaveholders” Electoral College that makes one Wyomingite equal to 3 1/2 Californians. Yes, its history is tied in with the 3/5ths rule.)

          • Ewell Knévanneaux

            Closer to 10,000,000.

          • (((GC)))

Interesting… I hadn’t come across the 10 million figure before. Where is it from?

            On the Crosscheck scheme:
“The Election was Stolen – Here’s How” (Greg Palast)
            https://zcomm.org/znetarticle/the-election-was-stolen-heres-how/

Small victory margins in the crucial swing states of Michigan, Arizona, and North Carolina — margins smaller than the Crosscheck purge lists — were enough to give tRump the electoral victory.

“While there is a great deal of work to do, much documentation still to analyze, we’ll have to pry it from partisan voting chiefs who stamp the scrub lists, Crosscheck lists and ballot records, “confidential.”

But, the evidence already in our hands makes me sadly confident in saying, Jim Crow, not the voters, elected Mr. Trump.

Related — from Ta-Nehisi Coates’ article, “The First White President”, on the “bloody talisman” of racism and white privilege that’s still potent today:

“Trump’s white support was not determined by income. According to Edison Research, Trump won whites making less than $50,000 by 20 points, whites making $50,000 to $99,999 by 28 points, and whites making $100,000 or more by 14 points. This shows that Trump assembled a broad white coalition that ran the gamut from Joe the Dishwasher to Joe the Plumber to Joe the Banker. …From the beer track to the wine track, from soccer moms to NASCAR dads, Trump’s performance among whites was dominant.”

It’s stunning that a news organization with all the money and connections that Fox has didn’t care enough to check out the truthfulness of this liars claims. In short, the reason US troops died in Niger was probably because Chad ran out of passport paper.

        • Dreaming Vertebrate

          Wuh??

          • SoCalGal20

Before they made the last travel ban list, DHS requested that every country send a sample passport so they could eveluate if they met their security specs for accepting passports. They gave countries a 50 day. That happened to coincide with Niger being unable to obtain their secure paper they use for their passports due to an issue with their paper supplier. Thry offered to turn over a sample of a recently issued passport but the Trump admin said no. So Niger missed the deadline and thus ended up on banned list. So stupid.

      • Cuberly Deux

Adding Chad to the travel ban list resulted in Chad pulling out security forces in Niger prior to the ambush that resulted in the the 4 men getting killed.

Chad was added to the ban list because Homeland Security demanded they turn over a sample of their passport paper they use. They didn’t have a newer more secure version so they submitted an older version. Homeland Security designated the paper as insufficiently secure and added them to the travel ban list. Even though we had been working with Chad on counter terrorism efforts in the region for a long time.

It’s looking like Trump’s diversions may be purposely distracting from what may have been a very serious error on the administration’s part.

        • sfbob

That one’s gonna leave a mark.

Canadian airport security screeners have stopped calling the police every time they process a passenger traveling with medical marijuana.

The Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) changed its policy this month after an exponential growth in the number of passengers with prescription pot in their carry-on luggage.

    • SoCalGal20

Well get this. My housemate’s son just graduated from Berkeley with an undergrad civil engineering degree. He hasn’t gotten a regular job yet but he’s been applying for jobs and was told to apply with FEMA for a contract job going to the hurricane areas. So he applied as a junior engineer. They contacted him just the other day asking if he’d be interested in a MIDLEVEL engineer position. Nothing against my housemate’s son – he’s a smart guy and I’m sure he’ll make a great engineer – but he should not be a midlevel engineer when the extent of his engineering experience is college and an internship and a brief job in a dysfunctional office. Oh, and they want him to go to Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

      • boatboy_srq

I’m torn between the idea that FEMA just isn’t attracting the calibre of professionals they used to and Junior is actually overqualified compared to the competition, and wondering if this is some uniquely Rethuglican attempt to sabotage the agency by hiring the underqualified.

        • Max_1
        • SoCalGal20

Pretty sure this is FEMA hiring available warm bodies who are even remotely “qualified”.

I mean, I hope it turns out to be a great experience for my housemate’s son but it just seems like it’s on track for shitty work (overall, not specifically my housemate’s son) due to inexperience/incompetance/poor supervision.

          • BobSF_94117

FEMA is waaaaaay over-stretched. They weren’t designed to have four+ simultaneous disasters.

          • don

Five, if you count the squatter in the White House

          • boatboy_srq

            Agreed.

Public agencies have been the starting or ending point for many careers. CALTRANS is famous for it: the “first job” and “end-of-career” segments are the bulk of the workforce in the offices (although thankfully not actually on the streets and rails where the heavy lifting is done). The trouble is that the private sector pays better, but it wants experience as a qualification for employment on the one end, and between private retirement arrangements being stingier than their public-sector equivalents and the ageism in the industry pushing out the fifty-plus crowd it isn’t so attractive when 65 comes knocking. It’s a longstanding recipe for underachievement by public agencies. Changing that, though, means looking long and hard at direct compensation, and doing that tends to tap public coffers sooner rather than later (and nobody wants to pay more taxes), so improvement it isn’t especially likely.

        • BobSF_94117

If you were a qualified engineer, would you go work for a federal agency which the GOP Congress wants to destroy? Yes, FEMA needs engineers. This year. And next, when they get their budget slashed by the proposed 37%?

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

If he’s working with the USACoE in the field he WILL get an education. While the upper echelons of USACoE are largely political hacks, the folks in the field, dealing with real challenges, tend to be top rate.

        • SoCalGal20

That’s great if that’s who he’s working with but FEMA are doing the contracting so I have no idea what all the details are. Nothing like getting field experience as long as you’re with people who know what they’re doing.

          • UrsusArctos 🐻

A LOT of FEMA work is overseen/administered by USACoE. I hope this guy gets set up in a good “real life engineering” position. My dad was an industrial chemical plant supervisor and HATED newbie engineers who failed to see that for reality vs “on paper” that reality wins. A lot of that type came to respect Dad because of his deep knowledge and willingness to tolerate and teach “experts” who weren’t actually expert in the processes they were dealing with.

        • don

Agreed. My ex worked for the Army Corps as a civil engineer and she had good things to say about the folks she worked with.

“There is no real direction here, neither lines of power nor cooperation. Decisions are never really made – at best they manage to emerge, from a chaos of peeves, whims, hallucinations and all around assholery. ”
    ― Thomas Pynchon, Gravity’s Rainbow

    • Lars Littlefield

An aside about Gravity’s Rainbow: It’s one of my favorite books. But whenever I have engaged anyone in a discussion about it, it becomes obvious the actually haven’t actually read it. This is not to say no one has read it, but it’s rare to hear anyone mention or remember it in 2017. My favorite nugget of thought which I gleaned from it in 1973, “Nature does not know extinction; all it knows is transformation. Everything science has taught me, and continues to teach me, strengthens my belief in the continuity of our spiritual existence after death.”

So, Picabo . . . ever completely read Finnegan’s Wake? It’s another of my favorite bits of fiction, along with Naked Lunch. If nothing else, my tastes are eclectic. 😉

      • ByronK

True. Maybe time out of the spotlight has lent him some introspection. It’s just such a contrast to his “put food on your family ” days.

    • Lars Littlefield

It was a good idea to vote a female African into Congress in the Behave State. But not a good idea to vote in a poorly educated Republican who is a Mormon, which Mia Love is. Ms. Love is most likely the dullest member of the House. I hope McAdams wins. But he is yet another Mormon.

  • Sadly, this type of lying has been going on in the US since the US Civil War. Much like how many females will make stories about their false cancer diagnosis to gain sympathy, males do the fake war stories and lying about being in combat.. This will continue as long as the US are in numerous conflicts..

Most of the time, with the those who lied about being in US Special Forces, it is pretty easy to find out, given it is a very small club, and for US Navy SEALS, the BUD/S class for each year are easily accessible. I don’t know about US Army DELTA Force, but I assume it is as small of a club for those who are bona fide members.

DAMN what a NYT op-ed by the divine Lupita Nyong’o, on her encounters with Weinstein. The writing is uniquely simple and straightforward and gripping. She managed to parry his aggression without retaliation, but something about the whole piece made me feel (even more) the ubiquity and universality of the abuse dynamic. She could just as well have been an 11-year old altar boy, or a Trump pageant teen. It’s just power preying on those without power, because it can. It’s the worst goddamn thing in this world.

      • gaycuckhubby

Yep. Seems Maddow was out of her depths here.

        • Lazycrockett

Her basic point was that most likely this wouldn’t have happened if Chad wasn’t placed on the Muslim ban. Chadian forces would still be located through out the area.

          • gaycuckhubby

And according to experts that’s not remotely true. Chadian forces were always located on the Chad Niger border fighting against Boko Haram. This Ambush happened 24 hours away in the West by a different terrorist faction. Chad forces would not have been there before the ban took place.

          • Lazycrockett

But as I stated earlier the withdrawal from the Chad troops would cause a vacuum that any faction would and could take advantage of.

          • Lazycrockett

and overall I trust Rachel more than some rando on Twitter. Im sure Nance and others have been been asked bout the situation before Rachel went on air.

          • MikeBx2

This is really the point, isn’t it. Everything in that tweet thread would be info Maddow and her team had access to. I still trust Maddow’s reporting.

          • gaycuckhubby

Woah. Not a rando. She’s a political scientist specializing in African studies. She has a lot of credibility in the field. Also should be aware that talking points media and Washington Post reporters have both retweeted her thread and are both urging caution on Maddows reporting

          • Lazycrockett

Rachel didn’t fall for the hacked documents that was sent out to discredit her reporting last July or August. Her and her people are top notch. Like I said I trust her more than some person on twitter, specially with the bots on twitter these days.

          • Lazycrockett

Numerous other sites have reported that the reason Chad was put on the list was because it didn’t have paper for its passports. The forces have been withdrawing from the countryside for the past 3 weeks. Almost all state officials were against adding Chad to the Muslim Ban because they saw the huge problem this would cause.

          • gaycuckhubby

            Yep. No one questioning that

        • Jay Mills

          and again!

    • Friday

      So, the story is what?

      • gaycuckhubby

Basically, that Chad being on Trump’s travel ban had absolutely nothing to do with the soldiers death in Niger.

She tried to tie them together

        • Friday

Actually, what went down in Niger was worse, and Drumph being an asshole about it is just cover.

        • Lazycrockett

Chad withdrawing from the Boko Haram fight created a destabling affect on the entire countryside possible giving the Haram ability and timing to be more daring than they have been.

    Meanwhile

Senate Republicans overcame internal divisions late Thursday to approve a 2018 budget that will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion over 10 years to allow for President Trump’s proposed tax cuts.

Passage of the GOP’s budget blueprint is a largely symbolic exercise, but it sets the stage for smoother passage of Trump’s upcoming tax cuts. It will include special instructions that allow for passage of a tax plan by a simple majority, without threat of a Senate filibuster to block it.

Norwegian was offering 10 day cruises for a single inside to the South Caribbean (Curacao, Aruba, Bonaire) from F. Lauderdale for $649 including taxes and fees – that includes meals. Prices seem low through January. Doubles probably are not much more. Check Expedia and Priceline.

My father is eligible to wear the Vietnam era service medal, being that he was in the US Navy from 1959 to 1979. He has never possessed and will not claim the ribbon because he never was anywhere near Vietnam during his years of service.

    • TampaDink

Mine was career Army…he did two tours in Vietnam (during which he was exposed to Agent Orange (the chemical…not #45)….and died at 56, very quickly (thankfully!) from fully metasticised malignant melanoma. My oldest brother was also considered a Vietnam vet, although he never went, after being nearly killed when hit by a car during training at Ft. Lewis (WA). After his long recovery, the Army retrained him from infantry into a clerk for the JAG office & he spent his last 3 yrs. of his enlistment in Germany. Years later (and after our dad died) my brother became very active with the V.V.A. (Vietnam Vets of America) and while he was very active he never pretended that he had actually been shipped off to southeast Asia. Even so, based on military standards, his VA issued grave marker indicates Vietnam, I guess because he enlisted during the war with the full expectation that he’d serve there.

OT: I got annoyed again. Honestly, I should thank Dumpy; I’ve stabilized two new soap recipes.

Tonight’s was a Mostly-Tallow (with token amounts of castor, 27.5% hydrogenated soybean, and coconut oils). In navy blue (ultramarine blue and a dash of black), scented with peppermint and vetiver.

If he pisses me off again soon enough, I’ll hammer down the olive oil, coconut, soy wax, and castor recipe for my niece, who won’t use any animal products.

Lowering taxes will create jobs – and after over 30 years of lowering taxes where are all those jobs?

More guns will make us safer – and after many millions of guns being sold, how many more people are dying from gun shot wounds versus 40 years ago?

Cutting taxes for the richest was supposed to stimulate the job market – yet jobs are not being created and income inequality is greater than ever before.

One party pushes all these false realities, and it isn’t the DNC.

    • Lazycrockett

Yeah that reminds me the Senate passed the first effort of their tax plans tonight 51 to 49.

      • don

they’re going to give the 1% another $1.5 trillion. Nothing else matters.

    • Gianni

In an earlier time, Donnie, himself, said that it appears to him that the government/economy runs better when Dems are in control.

    • Daveed_WOW

Lowering taxes for the very rich in fact makes them flush with new cash. They use that cash to send their operations overseas where labor is much cheaper. So I guess they ARE job creators in the Philippines, Ireland, China and Mexico. They also use cash to lobby Congress for relaxation of those pesky laws that force them to make safe products and create safe workplaces.

One reason that labor is cheaper outside the US is national healthcare. It doesn’t cost employers anything.

If they don’t want statehood, which they should have been granted 30 years ago, they could declare their independence from the United States and join another country. Spain or Colombia come to mind. Or they could from an alliance with the Dominican Republic.

I was googling a serial Killer named Randy Kraft who grew up in the vicinity of where I grew up,but I lived there 20 years after he finished high school. He was a closeted gay man who killed anywhere between 16 and 67 young men and boys. He demonstrated at rallies in support of the Vietnam War. Guess what political party he supported? He later changed his party as an adult, became a Democrat after coming out as gay and after his first encounter with law enforcement.

Ted Bundy, Gary Ridgway(Green River Killer), Dennis Rader (BTK killer)…..Same political Party (GOP). Most were also raised in religious households. Sick and twisted.

So I stumble on some blog that said: “Scientists ask: do republicans become serial killers or do serial killers become republicans?” One of the search results was from stormfront.org. The Stormfronters were saying “coincidence”, “biased data”, “hoax”, “Fake News”…all the things you’d expect to see here on JMG if there was a study saying that “most mass murderers are democrats”. So I read the biographies of the serial killers and look up a few random ones. When a political party is mentioned, it’s usually GOP or conservative.

The surprising thing to me is that the folks on stormfront seem really bothered by this. Apparently they are obsessed by crime statistics and race…and I’m certain that they don’t think race is a factor for serial killers. Their reasons actually sound sane and well informed. Then I think, “Wow, double standard much?”. I don’t believe race has anything to do with crime….sociopathic murderers can be found in every demographic on the planet…okay, no biggie.

I’m still reading, but I’m wondering if there is a certain broken type of person who is drawn to a party that likes war, guns, racial purification, suppressing human rights (anyone but theirs), greed and religion? How do you reason with people who think like this? Okay, bye. I’m the first one to admit I need to sleep

I think there are studies that some people gravitate toward authoritarianism and the people who are more “conservative” are less empathetic.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

OK, I was listening to the morning radio and this group was trying to get people to talk across the political divide but when I heard one of the guys in the discussion group was a Ted Cruz superfan, I was all “Oh, fuck that!” When you’re a fan of someone whose own party loathes him and whose daughter flicks him in the face, just no. You might as well stick one of us in the same room with that ex-felon selling drums of “food” for the apocalypse and expect there to be dialogue.

I think at a certain point, conversation is over-rated because a lot of these fundiecon men and women know how to put on the polite mask and do smiley patter as long as you don’t say anything that hurts their feelings or point how wrong they are. The Ted Cruz fan really did not want to talk about Trump much, which I think made the whole enterprise moot.

  • david fairfield

As with all the fake news, once it’s said, it’s believed as truth. Retractions mean nothing and are usually made in the quiet of night.

From what I recall from my friends and relatives in the US, and friends and family here, in Israel.

Those who tend to serve in elite, combat units, especially those who were in combat, tend to keep their traps shut about that service. Not that they are ashamed, although there are certainly instances that many of them are not happy to talk about.

Those who boast… are usually full of shit.

    • Daveed_WOW

That’s my experience too. I have a few relatives who are a little to braggy about their military service. Most of them bravely repaired radios, filed purchase orders and swept the mess hall for four years. I hate it when people say “thank you for your service”. They should thank us for paying them for the job they volunteered to take.

People like this should be prosecuted for false statents against the government and disgracing those who served or for impersonating a military veteran. If not criminally at least in a civil court. Something needs to be done to make these people pay for their lies. If you impersonate anything else, doctor, lawyer, police officer, etc. you can be xharge criminally. The military needs to get hold of these people an prosecute them.

His apology is pathetic and I don’t accept it. My father served in Vietnam. I am luckier than a lot of families that he survived, so to speak.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

I’m surprised it’s not a crime. Here in Canada, it’s a prosecutable offence to impersonate a member of the Military, even more so if you present commendations as your own ie: showing off medals you didn’t earn. That’s jail time.

  • LOL FOX LOL

  • Dagoril

This is so unusual. This kind of thing never happens! Well, I guess this is what you get when you elect a pussy grabbing liar to high office.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

As someone who comes from a Military family, 9 generations (including the war of 1812) I can tell you one thing for certain, none of them would present themselves so brazenly and with such self-congratulatory language. My Great-Grandfather, his son and his son, my dad, all served in the largest conflicts of the 20th century and they rarely spoke openly about their experiences, at least among “civilians” as it were. The fact that this guys was open and easy with his statements and “accomplishments” should have been a red-flag to anyone with a brain cell. Disgraceful.

  • SFHarry

Fox News: report fist, rescind later.

  • I’m surprised that being exposed as a fraud ten years ago did not shame this man into obscurity. He seems to be mentally ill in that regard–incapable of being shamed on the one hand and obsessed with the status that his false claims have brought him.

The article that I saw yesterday said that he was in possession of numerous medals that he did not earn including two Purple Heart medals. Unless he inherited them, it should be illegal to present military decorations to others without being able to prove he was awarded them honorably. I know we are well into the free speech area here–you are “free” to lie about being a a hero–but he could have used phony medals and papers to earn benefits that he was not entitled to.

    What a puke.
