MISSISSIPPI: School Named For Confederate President Jefferson Davis To Be Renamed For President Obama

The Jackson Clarion-Ledger reports:

A predominately black public school in Mississippi named after Jefferson Davis will have its Confederate tied namesake stripped next year and replaced with the title of another president whose character students, parents and teachers have said is more fitting— Barack Obama.

Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson announced at the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday evening that school stakeholders voted on Oct. 5 to rename the school Barack Obama Magnet IB.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” she told the board. A demographic breakdown of Davis Magnet’s enrollment for the 2017 school lists 98 percent of the school’s students as black. Overall, JPS’ enrollment is 97 percent black.

    Brilliant.

Members of the Heritage Foundation will be delighted!

I hope their fire and vandalism insurance is up to date. Sigh. It is going to be a rough road for that school I’m afraid. 🙁

    • joeyj1220

no… it’s a “predominately black public school”… white people probably don’t even know it exists.

      • lymis

They will know it exists now.

        • JCF

…but they still probably don’t want to go that neighborhood.

      • TrueWords

Why would they…you know blacks are not as smart as whites…that is something that has been touted and sadly many blacks as well as whites believe this to be true…

          • TrueWords

There are those who believe this to be TRUE…since the light skinned blacks probably are mixed with white….

      • or they could get it confused with another black school

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Dear Trump, they renamed the school because Obama has a waaaay bigger penis than you.

    Also, Trump supporters everywhere:

I hate that I’ve become so cynical my first thought on this was that some asshole at the state level will probably introduce some idiotic bill forbidding schools to change their names. Heritage and all that crap.

    • David Walker

      And withhold public funds.

I hate that I’ve become so cynical that my first thought was that the school will be bombed while school is in session. There will be no “conclusive” statement.

It’s nice that after all these years the school will now bear the name of a real, duly elected president of the United States, not a treasonous usurper. Too bad this will also be a conversation again in the future when the first public school is named after Donald Trump. 🙁

    • netxtown

donnie tried that already…it got sued and is now closed.

      • TimCA

Trump University wasn’t a “public school”, thank gawd. Although the distinction between our government and private business seems to be further blurred with every passing day under this administration.

    • Dazzer

I know that my experience of American politics will prove me wrong, but don’t you think naming a school after Donald Trump would be the surest of way of telling all of the USA that it was the crappest school in the history of your great country?

      • TimCA

Along with a public school being named after Betsy DeVos .

        • customartist

          *Uuuurrrk!*
I just threw up a little in my mouth

    • zhera

Trump or his offspring will claim copyright, and thus big money for the use of the name Trump. So I doubt that any school will end up with that name, except for ‘Trump University’.

      • TimCA

Naming public schools in this country after former presidents is a long tradition here. I’m sure Donnie’s ego would be stoked by this move. But I’m so cynical now I wouldn’t put it past Trump and family to try and make a dime off it.

      • bzrd

I’m looking forward to a prison named after the orange mafia since so many will be in there

  • netxtown

Personally – I’m not a fan of giving a building or a road a ‘human’ name. There will always be those who support and those who oppose. However, in regards to buildings of public education – where are the Microsoft, and Sony, and Samsung, and BoA’s, and all the rest who scramble to plaster their corporate names on stadiums? Is education NOT worthy of their endorsement? They want educated employees – yet they don’t support the very foundation of that education? Besides, it’s great advertising – and the school could use the income.

    • lymis

Personally, I approve of giving things like this names to honor people. But I also think that the honor should be reserved until the person being honored is no longer alive.

But if people are going to do such things, then few people deserve it more than Obama.

    • boatboy_srq

Carnegie built performance spaces, Vanderbilt a university. Gilded age robber barons spent personal capital from their own coffers whitewashing their legacies. The modern equivalent buys into (or deliberately promotes) Prosperity Gospel so they don’t have to buy public approval for their greed and don’t have to expend a cent on others (especially Those Other unWashed unSaved unXtianist Other People®). The few that do spend money do so at the private institutions that reinforce their mindset: places like Liberty and Regent.

      • Randolph Finder

Carnegie also built a University – Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh (now Carnegie-Mellon) and built one named after his Mother next door (the women’s college).

    • Sporkfighter

“Personally – I’m not a fan of giving a building or a road a ‘human’ name. There will always be those who support and those who oppose.”

My school district has 27 schools, 24 named for the neighborhood and three named for a local personalities. It’s a conscious policy, only violated twice since 1950. We avoid controversy and tie the schools to their communities.

School is named after Barak Obama, Trump immediately states he heard from a very credible source that the Title to the building is fake.

  • Pizza009

So i lived in Mississippi for a couple years. Learned that the reason Ms hates public schools so much is because after desegregation the rich white kids all got sent to private (usually religious) schools. Then the state tryed to rot the public schools.

    • customartist

Otherwise known as “The Republican Plan”

    • stuckinthewoods

The same tactic was used in VA and other southern states. They were called “segregation academies.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Segregation_academy

    • William

The same thing happened in Louisiana.

  • Gustav2

It is good to have a school named for a patriot instead of a traitor.

    • JCF

An American, instead of a (voluntary) foreigner!

..I already have a university named after me. The best university, everybody says so.. /donnietinkles

Any guesses where the next neonazi tiki torch “flash mob” will occur?

  • Silver Badger

My guess is that the school needs to be replaced so it was given a name which would insure it was burned down.

“another president?!?” right, a president of the USA as opposed to the “president” of the traitor coalition

  • How many schools will be named after our current president?

    • Dazzer

      As many as his IQ.

      So I’m guessing -(minus)147

How about the Trump Never Again High School. TNA High has a nice ring to it.

  • Good for them. Yes! Barack Obama Magnet School. I hope nothing is ever named for #45.

Just watch. Some yahoos somewhere are already planning one, as a response to the Barack Obama Magnet School.

What does that have to do with a public school in Mississippi? I remain unenlightened.

Excellent idea. The president of a traitor nation should not be honored in any US school, much less one with a predominantly black student body.

But I must admit, my second thought was: “Here come the tiki torches….”

  • KKK will be at that school – sheets, lynch ropes and blazing crosses. Keep safe.

  • Stubenville

At least two schools in Indiana will be named after Trump in 3… 2… 1… and / or Twitter storm about “wasting money” on changing the names of schools.

  • Dagoril

Well. This is going to leave a mark 😉

  • stuckinthewoods

Happening in Fairfax VA too where JEB Stuart High School could be getting a new name. As at Joe’s school, the leading contender is just Stuart, also not good enough. Voting was done in a weighted manner. The second and third were Thurgood Marshall and Barbara Rose Johns which together greatly outweigh the lame Stuart, meaning people do want a change. School board will make their decision Oct 26. week.http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/falls-church/debate-over-jeb-stuart-high-name-change-continues/476748538

  • Willys41

It’s astonishing to me that there may be enough progressive people in Mississippi to actually get this done. My immediate reaction is to suppose that the name change is part of a conspiracy to perpetrate some despicable crime.

  • narutomania

I love the sentiment behind this idea: to honour one of our greatest presidents. But the man is still alive.

I don’t think that it is a good precedent to name something after the living. The dead are easier to venerate. They make so few mistakes.

    • andrew

I think an exception can be made in the case of President Obama. He is a man of such basic decency and valor, that he will not disappoint them.

  • david

Maybe he can also become their cheerleading coach.

  • kareemachan

THAT is gonna chap the nazis’ hide. Hissy fits galore coming up!

Good move. That is certainly a change that just had to be made.

    Good move

You could always say the school is now named for Michael Jackson.

My kids went to Herbert Hoover High School and there were periodic mock-serious campaigns to get it renamed J. Edgar Hoover High School.
