US Army Bans Green Card Holders From Enlisting

Mic reports:

Army recruiters have been told to stop enlisting green card holders into the Army effective immediately, according to an email sent to military recruiters and obtained by Mic, a move that experts say breaks federal law.

“EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY DO NOT ‘SHIP’ OR ‘ENLIST’ ANY FOREIGN NATIONAL’S (ALL I-551 CARD HOLDERS) UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE,” reads an email sent to Army recruiters on Monday by Gregory C. Williamson, chief of the Accessions Suitability Office Guard Strength Division.

That directive is counter to a policy change the Department of Defense announced on Friday, which said green card holders could not ship out to basic training before a background check was complete.

Barring green card holders from enlisting in the military is against federal law, which states that an “alien who is lawfully admitted for permanent residence” may be enlisted in “any armed force.”

Hit the link for much more. According to a 2015 Pentagon report, about 65,000 green card holders were on active duty at that time.

Nor do have a clue as to what authority the US President has over an alien, legal or illegal. All of which well within the authority of the US Constitution. Unlkie Barrack Hussain who violated the Laws of the United States time after time and directly violated the US Constitution. What good nazi he is.

So which state do y’all think it’ll be?
Hawaii (heavy military presence and pro-immigrant)?
Washington, Minnesota, New York, or Virginia (also already involved in the Muslim ban cases)?
Texas or Alabama (heavy recruitment states)?

      • gaycuckhubby

All the more reason for those Senators who still put country above party to do everything they can to BLOCK 45*’s JUDICIAL APPOINTMENTS!

      • Librarykid

Speaking of things legal, isn’t there anyone around 45 to check the legality of these things before he releases them? I am waiting for the footage of the whole administration being led into vans while wearing handcuffs and leg irons. I’ll bet if they announced it ahead of time, they would have a larger crowd than the inaugural. If they had it on a weekday, agencies up and down Pennsylvania Avenue would fill sidewalks and building windows to see it. It would be a victory parade, not for him, but for the people.

  • ultragreen

O/T: This may have been reported here already, but a Federal judge in Hawaii struck down Trump’s latest immigration executive order as discriminatory against Muslims.

  • gaycuckhubby

I remember election night here on JMG. We were all distraught. I was crying. I don’t know if any of realized just how dangerous and immoral our country would become. And so quickly

    • Ross

Actually, I thought things would be FAR worse by now than they are.

Mind you, things are horrifying. But I truly expected much much much worse.

And I still expect much much much worse.

      • Todd20036

Any day that isn’t WWIII or concentration camps opening is better than rock bottom.

        That’s all I can muster.

        • Ross

Wanna see how dark I expected things to be by now?

On 1/13/17, I posted the following here on JMG:

FITTING TOGETHER THE PIECES OF THE PUZZLE:

          1) Trump has proved, over and over and over, that he can do/say anything and IT DOES NOT MATTER.

          2) It is known that Trump has studied Hitler’s rise to power, and how he became all powerful.

          3) Trump is addicted to attacking people who criticize him.

          4) Trump admires dictators.

          5) It seems ever more obvious that Trump is a Putin puppet.

          6) When people are terrified (think 9/11) they are easily manipulated. Remember, 86% of America thought attacking Iraq was a good idea.

With these puzzle pieces locked into an unfolding picture I predict the following playing out:

          1) Soon there will be a MAJOR “terrorist” attack on America. I mean like a large city being nuked.

          2) A few days later another city will be nuked.

          3) Muslims or some minority will be blamed by Trump. “It’s them!”

          4) People will be TERRIFIED OUT OF THEIR MINDS.

          5) Trump will go to a terrified Congress and get instant approval for unprecedented new powers.

          6) Trump’s approval rating will skyrocket. He will suddenly be ALL POWERFUL.

          7) Draconian new “safety” measures will be implemented. Curfews, suspension of civil liberties, ID cards, “dangerous” people being rounded up, and, above all, the media WILL BE CRUSHED. It will be illegal to critique Trump. All media/TV/Internet will be under Trump control.

Trump, of course, will not plan the terrorist attacks, or come up with any of this.

          He is the puppet.

          Is this extreme?

          Yes.

But with all the puzzle pieces in place can any other scenario play out?

I believe that even people who loathe Trump are willfully ignoring how dangerous he is.

He is a direct threat to our country.

NOTE: Most German’s did not think Hitler, even with all they knew about him, would be so bad.

      • kirby7771

I know. I can wait for Mueller to finish the job and indict that phony orange skinned son of a bitch; but I’d rather not. I just hope the net Mueller is weaving is good, strong and large enough to snare all these opportunistic human infections.

        • Librarykid

      • Treant

Psychologically, the concept of doubling down (the sunk cost fallacy) is very much alive. He cannot abandon years of rhetoric and a year of action and admit he was wrong. One, he’s not sane enough to do so. Two, that would mean that years of his life were a total waste.

Three, he’s further appealing to his base. But his base is eroding daily as he does one thing but says another, or betrays one section of his base for another.

They’ll never vote for a Democrat, but they also won’t vote for him again.

Quite frankly I don’t know who would want to serve in our military with this Commander-in-Chief in office

  • Capritaur

This doesn’t even make any sense. Green card holders already have a straightforward pathway to citizenship (typically after 5 years of permanent residency, they don’t need to serve to stay in the states) and they enjoy all benefits of citizenship except voting rights. Male green card holders are required to register for selective service, which means they can be conscripted if there’s a draft, but now they can’t serve voluntarily?

    • kirby7771

      It’s illegal.

      • Ken M

Exactly. The military is pissing off Trump again. He probably doesn’t even know it’s illegal. Can you hear the tweet about defending his stance on immigration. Great “new job” for his followers. JOIN THE ARMY.

        • JWC

his followers are NOT army folk

They have “issues” with “authority” and don’t learn, even to follow orders.

          • Ken M

Then they shouldn’t be bitching about needing jobs.

          • Ken M

Maybe not. But Trump can still say he offered.

      • Yeah, banning enlistment of lawful permanent residents is, in fact, illegal. Also illegal to separate them from eligibility to be deployed.

This move reeks of Stephen Miller’s rank Nazi stench.

    • clay

Green card holders, by law, also have a short track to citizenship– serve in the armed forces, denouncing all foreign allegiances even earlier.

Death Impending is possibly adding a tiny bit of lustre to his image presently, but the fact remains that John McCain is a hugely useless entity. Sorry about all that time in the bamboo hootch, but that was due in large part to the fact that he’s a shitty pilot.

Probably seeking to limit citizenship applications and the chain of immigration, as newly naturalized citizens petition for other relatives.

Remember, this is not a mistake. These are competent professionals who know exactly what they are doing.

        • Bert_Bauer

Yes, despite what the conservative blow holes say, this administration and the radical right hate legal immigration, too. I work in business immigration (doing lots of employment based immigrant and nonimmigrant cases) and we have seen a dramatic increase in the government issuing bogus requests for evidence and denials for cases that used to be easily approved. They want to limit the options for immigration because they know that more immigrants means fewer voters for them once green card holders become citizens. They are trying to stave off the inevitable demographic landslide that’s going to crush them.

        The man doesn’t understand empathy.

      • As an extreme pathological narcissist who also displays strong sociopathic symptoms as well, Donald has never done anything but emulate human behavior. The part of his brain which enables normal humans to feel a strong echo of what other people feel—empathy itself—is either malfunctioning or never existed in his brain.

He sees a sad person and while it might make him have an emotional reaction, it’s only because he doesn’t want to witness someone else’s pain. So he tries to say something, and in doing so makes it clear right from the get-go he has no sense that other people’s feelings are real.

Nothing is real to him but his own self, his own emotions and impulses and appetites.

This has actually been a life-long thing with him. The apparent dementia symptoms just mean he’s becoming less and less capable of pretending he’s normal.

        • Cuberly Deux

His speech has always been a mess but I swear it’s gotten progressively worse since the election. The last two weeks have been super cray cray.

          • In 1999, he was a vile, deplorable man, but he could speak in complete paragraphs and maintain focus throughout.

During the campaign, it was clear (to me, at any rate) that his verbal skills had declined noticeably.

But yeah, since the election, his speech patterns and vocabulary have degraded even further. As has his memory and ability to focus on anything longer than a single sentence, and sometimes not even that much.

“He knew what he signed up for.”

The way it is told in the story, it can appear that it is Trump who knew…
… “But when it happens, it hurts anyway.” Thinking of himself.

I listened to the way Trump talks about the loss of soldiers under his command, and he spoke as if he’s comforted hundreds of families. And THAT he has to put it in his perspective, always, makes me that much more inclined to think that he was speaking about himself, “He (Trump) knew what what he (Trump) signed up for (metaphorically becoming President).”

Either way, about himself of her husband, that rat’s ass of a President we’re saddled with is arrogant and depraved of any sense of humanity. Maybe this is why nukes are a big turn on for him… ?

        • UrsusArctos 🐻

45* IS a boil on the ass of humanity.

    • Polls are different than who’ll actually be allowed to vote.

This is Alabama, after all, home of Jim Crow. And Roy Moore was a leading voice in lobbying against removing segregation language from the Alabama state constitution.

      • UrsusArctos 🐻

Moore is an embarrassment to a LOT of Alabamians. If he stays in the news he may lose. Last week I saw Jones yard signs and none for Moore in several upscale GOP areas of Mobile & Baldwin counties which surprised me. These are the same educated, higher income enclaves, and ring suburban people that gleefully voted for 45*.
Moore may win, but if he keeps embarrassing people the urban and coastal folks will send his ass packing back to Lookout Mountain.

    Yankees WINNNNNN!!!

  • Lars Littlefield

Dear Friends and Fellow Members of the Resistance:

There is a recall petition being passed around my part of the world to recall a state representative (a female mormon Democrat) who made the horrible mistake of cosigning on a sanctuary bill proposed last legislative session. She won by a landslide last 2016, and has served as a hero in championing elementary, intermediate, and high school rights and progressive curricula. She a proven winner on all counts. But the alt-right Republican shit heads in my county are not satisfied. As for her mistake, the house bill she supported was not only tabled, it never made it to the floor of the house for debate. She has since pulled her support. But that doesn’t stop the evil doers. I receive at least 10 “Recall Joyce Wharton” emails a day. And this afternoon a guy with a clip board dared walk down our driveway (it’s a very long driveway) and try his luck at getting us to sign the recall petition. We politely told him “no” and mentioned that he was trespassing. “Didn’t you see the sign?”

So, on our neighborhood/county watch site where we all share who is having a garage sale, what grades have chicken pox outbreaks in the local schools, swim team schedules, local bridge club results and who is available for seasonal farm work I posted the following open letter response to the recall after reading that my neighbor “Renee” had written an open letter. She claiming that “pathetic lying Democrats” are at the root of all that is wrong with our state rep and calling for her being ousted. I thought I’d share.

    “Dear Renee:

Not just pathetic Democrats, but pathetic “lying” Democrats.” Oh, my! How could we all have been duped into voting for Joyce Wharton? The very idea that she was fairly voted into office is surely a sign of the end times. There is no telling the mass voter fraud that has taken place. I feel so ashamed. Starting today I am going to keep a loaded gun under my bed at night to protect me and my family from these pathetic lying Democrats who are so determined to bring down democracy and ruin America. I suggest everyone else do the same. There is no telling what other dishonesty is being foisted upon us. As a matter of fact, I heard a rumor that the cities of Moab and Blanding secretly add fluoride to our drinking water. Can you imagine? Fluoride! That, combined with the chem trails overhead, must certainly explain why all the local frogs are growing extra legs and turning gay!

Remember dear neighbors: The price of freedom is constant vigilance. That is precisely why the good Lord invented the TV remote control.

    Yours in Jesus,

    Lars”

Thanks for letting me share. So much winning

    God bless America.

Five minutes? Let me guess, 4 minutes and 50 seconds were spent talking about himself.

  • Anatomy of a narcissist’s behavior and reactions—
    https://twitter.com/WPLGLocal10/status/920428488989073415

When it’s something unrelated to his own actions, duties or responsibilities, he’ll spout any kind of nonsense and ignorance. Or if there’s any danger of being criticized, as happened with Puerto Rico, he attacks the criticizers and seeks to discredit them.

But the servicemen in Niger are in our armed forces. Donald is Commander-in-Chief. They wouldn’t be there, at minimum, without his assent if not active decision to order the deployment. Then they die.

He doesn’t want to call or even sign his name to a letter someone else wrote for what reason? Avoiding shame. This here would be an absolute nightmare for him, yet even Dubya managed to do the right thing:
    https://twitter.com/DeliliaOMalley/status/920039016124252160
I’ve got nothing but disdain for Bush, but what he did here impressed me.

Donald’s terrified he’ll be blamed for the deaths, be on the direct receiving end of opprobrium and contempt. A person in front of him, telling him he’s a bad, evil man who makes terrible decisions. A widow blaming him. Shaming him.

So what does he do when he’s finally boxed into having to talk to the widow of a fallen servicemember? Donald says, “He knew what he signed up for.”

Donald seeks to absolve himself of any responsibility in Army Sgt La David Johnson’s death by making it Johnson’s fault. Essentially sending the message, “Your husband chose this, not me.” Only then can he verbally acknowledge Ms. Johnson’s grief, but only by separating it from his own experience—and absolving himself of any responsibility, however peripheral to what happened.

In the end, avoiding shame. One of the top motivations of the pathological narcissist.

    • Max_1

We’re past it. Through crimson and gold to burgundy and old rose.

      • marshlc

100 km/hr winds here today, so any leaves that were still on the trees are gone gone gone.

        • safari

          Where-ish are you?

          • marshlc

I’m in Edmonton, so, central Alberta. Really amazing winds yesterday. I drive a Caravan, and I’m helping my son move, so it was pretty full of boxes of dishes, etc…. and I could still feel it rocking in the wind.

      • safari

Depends. There’s that entire “natural law” nonsense.

    • Max_1

      “Creator” =/= “God”

The Founders cited and thanked our “Creator”. They knew that definition for each of us, is one that is personal and by virtues bestowed in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights, the Federal Government is barred from using one religion or denomination to legislate and write/dictate what is and isn’t legal. This prevents people like Kim Davis from using her beliefs against other people.

Just watching the current state of politics and Republicans, we’re witnessing an attempted reversal of time tested National identities that this Nation has been built on… Imagine Maralago sinking. Trump is that sinkhole in America.

I avoid that slogan. AA hurt me with it.

        • Bryan

AA seems to hurt a lot of people, I see its benefit going through my program but I have a feeling it’s going to be hard advising anybody to utilize it – in the same way we’ve had Bipolar, ADHD, and Aspergers coming in diagnostic waves…even when it’s not a good fit with the client… too many therapists have been brainwashed into using AA as a catch-all for alcohol use disorder (or any of the Anon groups). If it’s not a good fit for the client it’s going to do nothing but cause harm. We’re taught to advise our clients, when some of the other members try to offer unsolicited advice, to merely reply “work your own program” – I’d rather not expose my client to that to begin with – those words should never cross their lips because they shouldn’t ever be forced into a scenario where it’s necessary. They all stress how non-religious they are but all the meetings are generally held in churches and use higher power language….they say oh that can be anything, your higher power could be a cup of coffee – no, sorry, it doesn’t work like that. Maybe for some people, for some clients that’ll be effective, but using it as a standard, first-line, catch-all intervention….asking for trouble, and for all our talk of ethics I find that one of the most unethical things we still do and try to justify.

          • JCF

“when some of the other members try to offer unsolicited advice”

Speaking only for the program I know, Emotions Anonymous, that is DIRECTLY against the Helpful Concepts. “We do not offer advice”

“they say oh that can be anything, your higher power could be a cup of coffee – no, sorry, it doesn’t work like that.”

It’s any entity a member chooses. Not you, not me, but any particular member’s particular choice.

          • Bryan

I agree – some groups are better at following the “don’t give advice” rule, which a lot of them have. Also I think you might have explained the higher power thing better than me – you got at what I was trying to say but I don’t think I phrased it right.

To be sure, the Americans that hate have been very carefully taught to hate. This is partly due to a long history of racism, but it’s also due to the ability of larger corporations to hire some really effective liars; e.g. Fox News.

Some of that is the result of policies from before Trump, a good deal of the older hurts have been exacerbated by Mr. Trump.

I’m imagining what those phone calls are like because all I can picture is him calling grieving families to complain about how unfairly HE is treated, how hard it I should to be him.

Dodgers win 6-1, and go 3-0 up against the Cubs in NLCS!

    • MikeBx2

Yes, L.A. one win away. No doubt they have the better team this year.

    • Ninja0980

I still believe my Yanks will win and we’ll be more then a worthy foe for you guys.

        • Ninja0980

I will say, the only thing that sours me on the Dodgers is Tommy Lasorda.
He disowned his gay son and still refers to his death from AIDS as the flu.
Great manager but vile human being.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Never much liked Lasorda as a person, anywho; I agree completely with your characterization of him. You can actually see how vile he is, just by looking at him!

It did strike me as a bit ‘funny’ the Dodgers “happened” to clinch on the exact same evening that the “vile human being”‘s 90th birthday was being celebrated at Chavez Ravine, though! Corrupt umpires? So it would seem…. (Especially highlighted since the advent of “video review”)

Against federal law… so now what happens?

    • Court challenges, again.

      • billbear1961

When they finish swamping the courts, it’s OVER, which is why people should be protesting NOW (I specify where I think the main focus should lie in a reply to Lazycrockett above).

I will not give up–we must call for action and FIGHT–but I won’t hide from you my belief that this country lacks the spirit to resist fascism. People who won’t vote won’t fight. (There has always been a powerful streak of fascism in this sick country–the greatest, perhaps the only serious threat to the Republic has ALWAYS come from the right–and it is emboldened as perhaps never before, certainly in our lifetimes.)

Short of a miracle, because of interference with the voting process and fanatical judges being appointed to the bench, and because of the right’s virtually unchallenged media LIE machine and the unlimited funds available to the right from the gangster oligarchs, I believe the Republic’s chances are SLIM. I think within a few years, the U.S. will be as vile and EVIL as Putin’s Russia.

The gangster oligarchs will then turn their attention to destroying the world’s remaining democracies.

Im starting to think last January’s Women’s March might have some teeth.

    • billbear1961

People should be protesting in numbers like the Women’s March (and taking economic action–reducing spending to nothing but absolute essentials, considering work stoppages, even a General Srike)–for access to Trump’s financial records, secure elections, moderates only appointed to the courts, to save healthcare and the environment, to demand sexual predators and Nazis be held to account, and stricter gun-control laws enacted. (It’s been estimated that 3.5% of the population constantly protesting in the streets can bring down an authoritarian regime, and that if CA, NY and WA, for example, were to take economic action, they could seriously impact the nationwide economy.)

      And they must VOTE!!

I don’t think it’s possible to Negan Republicans any harder at this point, I feel like it’d be that scene in Office Space where we just keep running back after we walked away to give it to the corpses some more. The lying, the accusations of fake news, the pure unchecked evil and greed can only be properly nullified now by violent and graphic punishments to deter anybody from ever even considering this crap again. I’m beyond fed up hearing them say whatever the fuck they want without ever suffering the consequences for their actions, while we all pay for the smallest misstep. Justice must be swift and merciless.

If you were wondering why Trump And
Bitch McConnell were seeming so chummy …

“WASHINGTON — Stymied legislatively, President Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell are turning their attention to one way they can skirt Democratic roadblocks and mollify unhappy Republicans — by filling scores of federal court vacancies.

In Monday’s surprise display of togetherness, both the president and Mr. McConnell, the Kentucky Republican and majority leader, emphasized their shared desire to begin moving aggressively to install conservative jurists at the appeals and district court level.

Focusing on judges has multiple advantages for both the president and Mr. McConnell. The courts are a longtime priority of conservative activists who have been grumbling about the failures of the Republican Congress, so a flurry of confirmations of nominees with known conservative views on cultural and government issues could quiet some complaints.

Because of changes in Senate practices instituted by Democrats in 2013, Republicans can now confirm judges on simple majority votes. That virtually guarantees success if enough time and effort are devoted to pushing the nominations through.

Mr. McConnell has also made clear his interest in eliminating the so-called blue slip, one last arcane procedural tool that Democrats have used to slow nominees in the Judiciary Committee. If he is successful in ending that Senate tradition, which gives a senator the right to block a judicial nominee in his or her state, it could greatly accelerate the entire process.

Giving lifetime appointments to dozens of judges favored by conservative judicial activists would also be an important legacy for Mr. Trump since his choices would be handing down opinions for decades no matter who follows him in the White House.

“The judge story is an untold story; nobody wants to talk about it,” an enthusiastic Mr. Trump said during his impromptu appearance with Mr. McConnell. “But when you think about it, Mitch and I were saying, that has consequences 40 years out, depending on the age of the judge — but 40 years out.”

every green card holding military person should simply walk away. Nothing gets accomplished with complaining.

    • Karl Dubhe

They don’t have the ability to do that anymore. If they’re officers they can resign their commissions in protest. If they’re enlisted, I presume they can request a release from their service.

But to just walk away? Bergdahl.

I sort of agree that non-citizens shouldn’t be in our military, long-term at least.

So fast-track anyone willing to put themselves in harm’s way to protect our country for citizenship.

Maybe not for simply signing up to enlist, but certainly for serving with honor.

  • KevInPDX

Service in the US military was the most direct route to US citizenship for a legal alien. They afraid the terrorist groups are planting ringers in the armed forces? AND… why the “F” aren’t they doing a background check on ALL volunteers? Just to get a promotion in basic Federal service in non-sensitive positions (GS 12 and above) they do a back ground check and interview folks about you. I mean positions like botanists, fisheries biologists and foresters.

I have a friend that works for an office in the government. I was recently told that there is about to be a huge crackdown on green card holders. That there were murmurs of a push about to happen that would potentially strip folks of their green cards. I’m guessing this is the first stage of that. You can’t strip someone of their card as easily when they’re earning their place in this country by serving.
