Trump Threatens McCain Over “Nationalism” Speech: “At Some Point I Fight Back And It Won’t Be Pretty”

Politico reports:

President Donald Trump on Tuesday slapped at Sen. John McCain’s condemnation the previous night of “spurious nationalism,” warning the Arizona Republican that “at some point I fight back and it won’t be pretty.”

“Well it’s a shocker,” the president told radio host Chris Plante in response to a question about McCain’s comments. “Yeah, well I hear it and people have to be careful because at some point I fight back. You know, I’m being very nice. I’m being very, very nice. But at some point I fight back and it won’t be pretty.”

McCain, who was awarded the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal Monday night in Philadelphia, used his acceptance speech to denounce “half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems.”

I’d put my money on the 81 year-old with brain cancer over the detestable lying scumbag any day.

I can’t bring myself to detest him, even though he did dump Palin on our porch, a move I know he regrets. I suppose I can’t forget what he went through in service to this country when he could have used his Admiral father’s influence to have stayed safe. Or that he passed on being released himself to get a more seriously injured POW back to the U.S. As I’ve said many times before, there is little I have ever agreed on with McCain, but his love of our country and his sacrifice for it is something I’ve never questioned.

Yes, I too project a bugs coolness, with a Daffy seething just underneath. I’ve learned to project a calm, cool, professional but funny, approachable work personality. Once, after letting off a little steam with my manager about another, he said I shouldn’t hold back and tell them how their behavior affected me. I said, oh, no, you want me holding back, far back, because if I let go, I have a scorched earth policy that lets nothing good or beautiful ever grow again.
He replied “then, maybe I’ll talk to her…”

          • greenmanTN

Much of my energy is spent on not getting angry because it isn’t pretty. I’ve had to learn to keep my mouth shut too, because things I think are hilarious (and really they are, I swear) tend to be taken as a wee bit… caustic by others. Worse yet is making a sarcastic joke then having to explain it, which only makes it that much worse. I would give an example but they were really pretty evil…

Some people even think I don’t get angry. No, I’m just thinking it but not saying it.

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

No example needed, I think we may have been separated at birth and probably for good reason. I’ve been given looks of dismay or shock at what I have found funny. There is another interpretation: someone told him the history of the Nixon Watergate scandal and he was reminded that Congress has all the power needed to remove him from office if he misbehaves enough to threaten current GOP control. In other words, don’t make us come up there to ask for your resignation:

On Aug. 7, 1974, U.S. Sen. Barry Goldwater, R-Ariz., U.S. House Minority Leader John Rhodes, R-Ariz., and U.S. Senate Minority Leader Hugh Scott, R-Pa., made it clear to the embattled Nixon that he faced all-but-certain impeachment, conviction and removal from office in connection with the Watergate scandal.

Nixon announced his resignation the next evening, effective at noon on Aug 9, 1974.

    Sen. McCain’s speech, verbatim.

    https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/oct/17/john-mccain-nationalism-unpatriotic-liberty-medal-speech

… To fear the world we have organized and led for three-quarters of a century, to abandon the ideals we have advanced around the globe, to refuse the obligations of international leadership and our duty to remain “the last best hope of earth” for the sake of some half-baked, spurious nationalism cooked up by people who would rather find scapegoats than solve problems is as unpatriotic as an attachment to any other tired dogma of the past that Americans consigned to the ash heap of history.

We live in a land made of ideals, not blood and soil. We are the custodians of those ideals at home, and their champion abroad. We have done great good in the world. That leadership has had its costs, but we have become incomparably powerful and wealthy as we did. We have a moral obligation to continue in our just cause, and we would bring more than shame on ourselves if we don’t. We will not thrive in a world where our leadership and ideals are absent. We wouldn’t deserve to.

But he “won” the E.C. last time without majority support, and nothing is being done to ensure future elections will be secure–they will be as vulnerable as they were last November, maybe more so.

And Trump and the GOP have begun stacking the courts with their fellow gangsters–real, far-right fanatics.

The time is coming when people will have to refuse to recognize the “authority” of the ruthless criminals who control their government IF they mean to preserve their democracy.

        • Tomcat

Here is the deal of a Democracy. If a Democratic country wants to change the way it is run their are means in place to do so Democratically. If on the other hand the people do not care enough to try and change things it is still a Democracy.
Everything is determined by how the people want to be ruled.

          • billbear1961

I do not recognize the right of a democracy to vote in fascism, in effect, to commit suicide.

Crime is still crime–evil is still evil–even if the majority were actually to vote for it in an honest election.

Nothing, in any circumstances, can justify or legitimize fascism.

The majority have no right to tyrannize and even kill the citizens they hate. No vote in a GENUINE democracy can legitimize that, EVER, in ANY circumstances.

          • Ken M

“Freedom” can come with consequences, and unlike monarchies, can see a change in leadership, hopefully without war. Note the hopefully.

          • billbear1961

People who, of their own free will, submit to fascism are ignoble COWARDS. With that submission, they lose their liberty, and their lives are no longer their own.

        • canoebum

All those white militia “patriot” types were so found of quoting Jefferson, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.” Where are they now? They seem to have gone strangely quiet. Personally, with this cretin, I’m in favor of the Ceausescu solution. I could hear that news and sleep like a baby.

  • netxtown

uh donnie – you may find McCain suddenly has ‘friends’. you’re right – it won’t be pretty – at all.

  • Nothing 45 does is pretty.

  • anne marie in philly

McCain has no more fucks to give; he’s gonna go out guns a-blazing; more power to him, for he is correct!

    • rextrek1

Id Love to See McCain go OFF on TRUMP…he has NOTHING to LOSE

  • andrew

Trump saying “I’m being very, very nice” shows just how out of touch with reality a narcissistic person is.

  • ColdCountry

And Dump once again proves there is no disgusting level to which he will not stoop.

“I’d put my money on the 81 year-old with brain cancer over the detestable lying scumbag any day.”

    Absolutely!

  • Uncle Mark

First, the shitgibbon “takes a knee” at acknowledging or even doing the very least to honor our dead soldiers…preferring to spew obvious, outrageous, and instantly disputed/proven mendacities about his predecessors. Next, he goes after one of our dying war heroes. I’m hoping that the segment of his base, who support our troops will finally see how reprehensible behavior is and how odious this Fucking Moron is. Perhaps, this will be that 3rd-rail that no leader dares touch that finally drops is approval well-below 30%…and eventually results in overwhelming calls for his removal.

  • Jeffg166

Keep pushing him towards that heart attack or stroke. Either one works for me.

The idea that Trump could ever threaten McCain is laughable.

Oh, Donald… you’ve never been pretty. Ever.

In fact, you may be on your way to being the ugliest human being ever. The competition is stiff, but you’re doing you best.

Trump is nothing more than a high school bully.

    • Ken M

as he dodges behind his security detail.

    • BlindBill

Reform school …. I mean Military school … bully

      • 2guysnamedjoe

        You mean “military” (eye-roll) school.

  • Halou

McCain is facing his own mortality with calm and dignity, chances are his cancer will kill him so Trump’s threats of political retaliation are rather meaningless.

  • BlindBill

the vengeful little little man always fights back – to any criticism real or imagined. When given the opportunity to proactively build something good or mindlessly snipe at his “enemies” – he always chooses the low road to bring someone else down. #FuckingMoron

  • JoyZeeBoy

Bullying a Senator? Thank you, Adolph.

  • mark99k

McCain’s thought-bubble right now: “Bring it, pussy.” We know this ain’t over. But I hope to hell there won’t be some detestable secret reconciliation meeting like what apparently happened with McConnell.

    • thatotherjean

I sort of doubt that. McConnell looked like a hostage dragged out of a prison cell to stand beside his captors while they proposed the terms of his release.

    Bone Spurs says what now?

That’ll teach Republicans to nominate somebody they can’t stand, just because they think he can win. He’ll tear their party to shreds before he’s gone.

Not soon enough. That would have been about a year ago.

The problem with the public putdowns of Trump is that they don’t come in large-enough clusters to give Orangina a well-deserved aneurism. We now have several high-profile public figures who’ve shown they’re capable of landing hard punches, but we need a half-dozen of them to speak out forcefully on the same day, overrun the news cycle, crush his ego again a few days after the same way, and repeat until he shits himself in public.

Being mentally a child, Trump thrives on the illusion of being adored, so perhaps the way to break him is to work carefully and mercilessly to destroy that illusion.

  • Pip

The man’s dying of brain cancer. What’s Trump going to do to him exactly?

  • Richard

This is what McCain gets for giving the orange man a by for his hateful comments on McCain’s POW status….how the orange man doesn’t like military personnel that get captured. I wonder how McCain responds to this latest attack?

  • Larry in Oklahoma

It’s not cool, not cool at all, for 45 to have a temper tantrum over what a dying war hero had to say. A polite disagreement could have been appropriate. Since 45 avoided the draft FIVE TIMES (and none of his children have served) while McCain served this country, it was very inappropriate for 45 to get all hostile. Just proves this man baby never grew up. Never will. A total disgrace to our country.

    • thatotherjean

Trump doesn’t do “polite.” He can fake it, sort of, but he doesn’t mean it.

  • kladinvt

I can’t wait to piss all over Comrade Cheetos grave. Oh wait…he’d probably like that!

  • red-diaper-baby 1942

Every time I think, Well, now he’s hit rock bottom, it can’t get any worse than this, this schmuck manages to surprise me.
I could just as well have posted this in response to the next item, the one about the death of Kelly’s son, but I think the McCain story is even worse.

Nationalism vs Globalism….. Nationalism boils down to Nazi-ism in the US in my book!!!

It is also an ISOLATIONIST policy, internationally, which is what the Russians/Putinesca wants!!! He wants the US out of International politics.
