Roy Moore Gains 20K Twitter Followers…From Russia

The Washington Examiner reports:

Judge Roy Moore is a big deal in Alabama — and also, apparently, in Russia. A swarm of Russian Twitter bots has suddenly followed the Republican front-runner in the special Alabama senate race, helping to increase his social media audience from about 27,000 followers on Friday to 47,000 on Monday.

But don’t call him Russian Roy just yet. The Moore campaign doesn’t understand the candidate’s sudden Soviet popularity and they’ve asked Twitter to investigate. “We had absolutely nothing to do with this,” Moore spokesman, Drew Messer said. “We’ve never purchased followers or dummy ads on Twitter.”

Another aide told me the same, stating that “our social guys worked hard to build an authentic following.” And while it’s difficult to explain why Moore is suddenly big in the former USSR, there’s no denying his popularity in Alabama. The base that loves Moore will follow, will like, and will retweet everything he puts out online.

Twitter has already suspended thousands of Moore’s Russian bot followers. As of today he holds an eight-point lead over Democrat Doug Jones.

  • Gustav2

So they will have less time to spend on Mediaite?

    • Cuberly Deux

You ain’t kidding. Damn, it’s incrementally worse every freaking day.

      • Joe in PA

I just pop in once in a while, and I ONLY click on very anti-Trump stuff…just to see how the commenters can twist into pretzels to blame Hillary or Barrack. Truly remarkable.

        • Cuberly Deux

Right now there’s an anti-gay infestation on the article re; Trump ribbing Pence, saying he wants all the gays killed. Oddly enough I went back to see where the venom was heading and surprise there were actually quite a few of the more toxic comments had been removed. I guess the one person they dedicate for moderation finally made it to that particular article.

          That won’t last long.

          • Joe in PA

I was on the Washington Blade site the other day, dang the trolls were awful. They must have figured out “it’s a gay site…so let’s troll”. The 2017 version of ‘roll a fag’. Do it anonymously online! Sigh.

          • pch1013

It’s an iron-clad law of the internet, going all the way back to Usenet, AOL, etc.: As time goes by, the probability of an unmoderated message board being completely taken over by Nazi trolls approaches 1.

          • Paul

I found a way to report facebook comments to the pages they appear on. If you mark it as spam then it’s usually up to the page to remove them. As Facebook don’t seem to care about anti-gay comments it’s a good way to get them removed from pro gay pages like GLAAD.

Based in St. Petersburg, the agency was staffed predominately by young people, many of whom were unable to find jobs elsewhere, Savchuk said.
They were given targets such as President Obama, Europe or Ukraine, and ordered to celebrate two characters: Putin and his defense minister Sergey Shoygu.
“Most of them do the work unconsciously and write what they’re dictated,” she said, “If tomorrow they’re told to praise Obama and hate Putin, they will do so.”
The trolls were paid between 40,000 and 50,000 rubles (about $750) per month. Savchuk said she donated her pay to charity.×439.jpg

Hey, it worked on the ignorant American rubes last November. They sure as hell haven’t educated themselves in the last year and the government has done exactly nothing to stop this. It’ll work on the ignorant American rubes this November.

    • Gianni

I’m tempted to say that you’re being unkind, but I can’t bring myself to say that. Too big a part of me agrees.

I adore Hallowe’en. My carved pumpkin is up in the dining room (I’m recharging the batteries for it now).

What I don’t like is the gardens going down, but more on that later. With photos from The Last Day. Frost is expected tonight, but there’s an off chance we’ll get lucky.

Only predicted to be upper 30s here. I’ve got the tropicals inside…so I’m not scrambling (like usual!). I spent the day cutting back peonies. And I’m not done! I’ve got a plant problem. πŸ™ I’m good with “the last day”. πŸ™‚

    • Joe in PA

But in response to your comment…I agree, they have not educated themselves…they would rather stay in the dark. A FB friend (don’t judge) posts lots of anti-Trump stuff, the folks that comment on her posts are truly frightening. One even said (and I truly think she was serious): “Facebook is not political”. FFS, the stupid.

      • Treant

I use FB to keep up with friends and family myself, but I do confess that I’ve ditched everybody who’s pro-Trump with no apologies and no explanations.

And my annoying cousin who keeps getting fired and asking all of us to keep our eyes out for jobs. Which she’ll apply for. Maybe. After she prays on it. If it turns out to be God’s Will.

        That bitch just annoys me.

        • Danieruw

Maybe it’s god’s will that she be chronically unemployed. Did she ever think of that? Or does god keep steering her wrong about taking jobs that god knows she’ll be fired from? Jesus take the wheel indeed…

          • Treant

It’s certainly her holier-than-thou attitude that keeps her chronically unemployed. Coupled with incompetence and laziness, it’s kind of a trifecta.

  • Joe in PA

The whole thing sounds really fishy. If he was buying bots, he wouldn’t buy OBVIOUSLY Russian bots. It feels sort of like a set up, but it is so lame that I can’t believe anti-Moore people would do it. Weird.

    • Tomcat

      Trump might.

      • Joe in PA

LOL, he IS that dumb. πŸ™‚

        • Tomcat

And he wanted the other guy.

          • Tomcat

Setting up Moore would be right down his alley.

    • -M-

How about, buying a bunch of obvious bot supporters so he can make a show of denying them?

      • Joe in PA

Totally plausible. And make a big show of denying and asking Twitter to “investigate”. Oh wait, they’ve done that. Sigh.

      • RMJ

Or if you’re into 3-dimensional chess… goading your democratic opponent into making a fuss about it, possibly creating ads that say “look at my republican opponent getting help from the russians” and then “discovering” it was someone with ties to the democratic opponent (who was paid well in advance I’m sure.) If it were me, that’s what I’d do. Seems like this type of thing happens on the regular and some low-level guy got paid off to buy a bunch of twitter bots for moore’s account but will come out at the last minute and hurt the Dem candidate. You know, like a double agent. Okay, Okay, I’m putting on my tinfoil hat now to prevent further brainwave interference from the government. :o)

But remember, you heard it here first and I want my props if it comes to pass!

    • another_steve

For that reason, Trump is/was their perfect boy. Russian intelligence understood the discord his November win was sure to result in. Plus they no doubt have the goods on the financial crimes he and his inner circle have been engaged in, in Russia and around the world. So they’re able, in effect, to blackmail them all.

OT: According to new TSA guidelines at least nine states will require passports for domestic air travel Jan. 1, 2018. The nine states are Kentucky, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Washington. Each of these states does not currently issue a state ID that satisfies the federal ID minimum security requirements, according to the REAL ID Act of 2005. That means these states have about 10 weeks to make changes to their state IDs or drivers licenses so that they meet federal government standards. Otherwise, you’ll need to apply for or renew a passport. Regardless, if you live in one of these states you will need a new ID once they are in compliance.

    Are we having fun yet?

More Neo McCarthyist red baiting nonsense that sounds like it came straight from the mouth of Alex Jones. The Russia narrative is a ruse the DNC came up with to distract from the fact they are essentially just as right wing as the Republicans, which is why they lost.

I find it utterly hilarious that $100K (an absolutely insignificant amount of ad money) in ads on Facebook can wreck Clinton’s campaign, which spent $1.3 Billion dollars. If that’s the case, it shows how utterly incompetent Hillary was, and is.
