GERMANY: Berlin Soccer Team Shows Solidarity With Protesting NFL Players, All Take A Knee Before Match

The Associated Press reports:

Hertha Berlin nodded to social struggles in the United States by kneeling before its Bundesliga home game on Saturday. Hertha’s starting lineup linked arms and took a knee on the pitch, while Pal Dardai’s coaching staff, general manager Michael Preetz, club officials and substitutes took a knee off it before playing Schalke.

“Hertha BSC stands for tolerance and responsibility! For a tolerant Berlin and an open-minded world, now and forevermore!” the club said on Twitter.

“We’re no longer living in the 18th century but in the 21st century. There are some people, however, who are not that far ideologically yet,” Hertha defender Sebastian Langkamp told Sky TV at halftime. “If we can give some lessons there with that, then that’s good.”

    Orange One won’t like it.

    • David Walker

      Good.

    • JackFknTwist

I interpret this as a ‘f uck you Trump/turd’ moment.

      • David Walker

Glorious and international. And, considering the feeling toward 45 in Europe, I expect the response was wild…in a good way.

        • JackFknTwist

Absolutely. I met a few Germans here in the USA last week …….’loath’ and ‘despise’ were only some of the words !
          They have good English.
          I wonder how’s Trump/turd’s German ?

          • OdieDenCO

            donny speaks fluent nazi

        • Nowhereman

I was just thinking about that. I haven’t heard of any European countries deciding to invite him back for a state visit.

          • DutchGuy

No, don’t think we’re willing to run the risk of showing support for him.

    • JAKvirginia

      P. I. T. Y.

    • boatboy_srq

Germans have slightly more familiarity with fascism than Lord Dampnut and his enablers. If they had any intelligence they’d pay attention – oh, right, who am I kidding…

  • zhera

I like the solidarity, but also think it’s a bit strange. Was there a national anthem being played? Did anyone speak to the crowd about it?

    • Silver Badger

Very cool. Nice to know the world knows that not all Americans are “like that”.

    • Dazzer

I’m pretty sure most Germans knew exactly what was happening – and given the levels of hatred for Trump in Germany at the moment, they’ll have fully endorsed it.

      • zhera

I just… don’t want this to turn into a ‘hate Trump’ gesture. It’s about a very specific issue, police violence against minorities. I don’t know if that can work internationally, especially since the US flag and anthem aren’t there to be protested.

But to repeat, I like the solidarity.

        • David Walker

I understand what you’re saying and I think you’re mostly right. But the idea of an international Hate 45 gesture, and this implies more than a gesture, is fine with me. You’re right in that the crowd may not understand BLM (or why there needs to be such a movement), but the know it involves 45 and an international demonstration can be a good thing.

      • Nowhereman

At this point, taking a knee is a protest against Trump and fascism.

    • Taylor Bixler

The PA announcer said to the effect of
“Berlin is colorful,Hertha BSC stands for diversity and against
violence. For this reason, we are joining forces with the protest of our fellow American athletes to take a stand against discrimination. For a tolerant Berlin, both now and forevermore.”

This frankly has meaning for European football as well as there is some pretty rampant racism amongst fans of certain clubs towards African or South American players – throwing bananas on the field, etc. Dreadful stuff.

      • zhera

        That’s great!

    • ChrisMorley

No national anthems at most European soccer games, those are played at internationals.
European papers and TV news report TakeAKnee protests and tRump’s twitter rages.

Germany and France are now leading the Free World in terms of modern enlightenment.

Well and maybe Canada and New Zealand a little bit too.

And certainly all the Scandinavian countries and Iceland, Ireland, Belgium, Holland and also Italy, Portugal and Spain — despite the current right wing problem in Spain with horribly over aggressive handling of Catalunya’s independence movement recently.. Even South America seems to be more enlightened for the most part than what is going down in America.

It is appalling to realize that it is the USA that is drifting rapidly towards Fascism. Well of course Russia and Saudi Arabia pretty much the same, but gee whiz, what ever happened to American commitment to democratic institutions, and a civilized role to play among the nations?

Germany has never forgotten the horror of the Nazi era, and now has a modern properly conducted voting system with proportional representation that allows many parties who can get bipartisan behind contentious issues. They even have achieved equal marriage. For many years I swore I would never make an effort to learn the German language, at least the basics, but
now I respect what they have achieved and am taking a beginners course.

If only the US could get out of the present death spiral towards a nightmare society of hatred and racism and greed and intolerance. If only, if only, if only…. if dreams and wishes could work a little magic.

But thoughts and prayers don’t work, you idiotic ‘Christian’ militant hate-mongers — with your support of this Teabag monstrosity of governance
in D.C. — you in your deplorable ignorance and arrogance are bringing your own nation to cruel ruin.

Plus the 2nd amendment massacres — what an obscenity that amendment has become, an albatross with the murderous seeds of destruction.

We can only weep for what could have been. Lament for a nation.

I moved to Berlin from NY last year and it’s the smartest thing I’ve ever done. The government here actually works for the people in hundreds of ways the U.S. does not.

For example, the rent in NY is ridiculous because it is a scam to make the rich richer: places sit empty as landlords wait to find the idiot with lots of disposable cash. Then when their lease expires, the landlord raises the rent 20%+: he knows you don’t want to move again so he takes advantage of you.

In Berlin, rents are capped by the age, size and value of the apartment, which is why most places are under $800. Then the renter is protected so it takes SEVEN YEARS to evict a tenant.

Add in job security — most of my friends have been in their jobs 30+ years — low prices, a great transit system, 10% of country powered by sustainable energy, liberal nudity laws, and a better public attitude toward LGBT than America, and you’ll understand why I’m not coming back to America any time soon.

That said, I know America will right itself eventually. The problem is, liberals and gays are 40+ years ahead of their time in terms of the society they require. The future will be great. It’s just too bad Americans have to live in the now.

        • northern_neighbour

          Wie geht es dir?

Ich bin seher gut heute, aber ich komme aus NYC nicht!

I’m glad you are enjoying your new life over there, and hope your optimism for Amerika in 40 years will pan out, but imagine the suffering of millions for the next 40 years with the country heading to the Dark Side of the Force while the seas rise, the environment crumbles, and hurricanes smash infrastructure.

The planet cannot afford this Presidency. Fingers crossed that Mueller may be able to bring him down at the optimum moment vis a vis the midterms of next year.

          • romanhans

Deine Deutsche ist besser als Meine Deutsche! And you’re right: I think America is moving slowly in a good direction while the planet is quickly going to hell. At least global warming might stop everyone from flying to South Africa in the winter.

  • Wuulf

    Bravo!!!

  • David Walker

Not about this German team (I could be very shallow, but I’ll hold off for now), but it’s every bit about this, too. “To Kill a Mockingbird” has been “taken off” the required 8th grade reading list in Biloxi, MS because “people” complained that parts of it made them uncomfortable. If not Alabama, then Mississippi. The snowflakes continue to make themselves feel important while a soccer team in Germany says “Fuck you!”

    http://my.xfinity.com/articles/news-entertainment/20171013/US–To-Kill-A-Mockingbird-Removed-222b?cid=featuredent_media_mockingbird

As for Hertha BSC, could I please have a #24, 2 #8s, and as many #21s as you can spare?

    • Silver Badger

Greedy much? Your eyes are obviously bigger than your “stomach”. As a gesture of good will and care for your well being, I’ll take care of the 21’s for you.

      • David Walker

You are too kind, but I’ll cope.

      • Mark

Look how the world’s changed! Germany, where Hitler rose to power 85 yrs ago, is more in favor of diversity and freedom of speech/freedom to protest than the United States where such is enshrined in its Constitution.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Sorry, that may not have come out right, I’m disheartened about what’s happening, not by those fighting against it.

          • GanymedeRenard

Of course, that was my first thought when I read your reply. And it’s been disheartening (at least in the Western world) since Brexit happened, then the Dotard’s usurpation – yes, I call it an usurpation -, then Marine Le Pen’s high profile, then the far-right in Germany gaining so much power now that Merkel must form a coalition with them, then Catalan separatism and the fascist response from Madrid, now Austria’s far-right apparent rising… I mean, I don’t like the path the West seems to be taking. In fact, I fear.

Just watched the German football (soccer) tv show (Sportschau).
They spend about 10 s on it. “Solidarity with NFL players” and added a “well done”.
Right now they are showing Berlin losing the game (0:2).
(And no, there was no anthem. Why should there have been.)

Eta: Report on the match shows spectators leaving. But just shortly before the end of the game, and because Herta’s game was so uninspiring. The kneeling was pretty much a non-issue, positive or negative.

This is Pennsylvania. Either you show up at the polls or you’re clearly an evil person trying to cheat the system*. So it’s extremely hard to get an absentee ballot without being able to prove severe illness or the fact that you’re leaving the state for business.

“We’re no longer living in the 18th century but in the 21st century. There are some people, however, who are not that far ideologically yet.”

How interesting that Germany is consistently the world leader in decency, statesmanship, reason, and sensibility, head and shoulders above the US in moral authority. It gives us hope that in sixty or seventy years our country may bounce back from today’s depths. Unless morlocks start breeding humans for food by then, which is definitely foreseeable. When morlocks do come along, they are certain to be HUGE Republican party donors.

  • rednekokie

Good for them. I totally agree, and would do the same if I were to go to a ball game.

Wow, they even got the right message and not that bs the admin tried to reframe to.

  • Ernest Endevor

This looks a lot like grandstanding, designed to demonstrate the superiority of the GDR to the US. Perhaps it might have meant more had they found a way to kneel WITH the US players and mentioned them in that brief statement of intent. Or am I missing something?
