Major Medical Groups Denounce Trump’s “Catastrophic” Decision To Stop Obamacare Subsidy Payments

The Associated Press reports:

Six physician groups are condemning a Trump administration decision to halt payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law. Their statement Friday calls on Congress to act immediately to restore the payments to prevent what it called “dramatic, if not catastrophic, increases in premiums across the country” and millions of Americans losing coverage.

The groups represent more than 560,000 U.S. doctors and medical students. They are the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physicians, the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Osteopathic Association and the American Psychiatric Association.

The statement follows an announcement late Thursday. The White House says the government cannot legally continue to pay the so-called cost-sharing subsidies because it lacks formal authorization by Congress. At least a dozen states plan to sue President Donald Trump over his decision to stop payments.

I lived in New York City until age 26 and never owned a car. Didn’t want to deal with the traffic and parking shit. NYC has one of the best mass transportation systems in the world. Can take a while, but you can get to almost any Point A to any Point B in NYC by subway and/or bus.

In my twink years I was very desirable and blessed with many admirers who owned cars, so I was never without transport.

While the holiday has Christian stupidstitions as its root, the “nem a nosh” of handing out treats definitely adds some Yiddishkeit to trick or treating. What could be more Jewish than feeding people until they plotz? The other good thing is that Americans now spend more on Halloween decorations than on decorations for Christmas.

          Exactly.

My Yiddishe parents always made sure my sister and I celebrated Halloween and Christmas (the latter, without any religious connotation). An excuse to get more sugar down us.

OT: Wow, it’s bad out there. The smoke is forecast to be really bad this afternoon and even worse tomorrow. An article in the Chron said the situation was akin to what people that live in Beijing contend with on a daily basis.

Was supposed to meet up with some friends this evening, that’s cancelled. Most people I know have been working from home or have taken a day off. If you have to be outside in it for long periods of time it’s freakin awful.

    Then there’s this.

“Where to buy respirator masks in San Francisco and Oakland”

What we need is a good west or south wind to blow it out. But we have this cool, stagnant pattern where the warmer air over the bay rises and sucks down the smoke from up north. It will probably get worse tonight when north winds begin to kick up.

I was just emailing with a friend that lives in the city…she just bought something called an “N95 mask” if she has to go out. She said that the air quality is on par with that of Beijing. Luckily she doesn’t absolutely have to go out. She worries about her dog though (Monty). 🙁

      But you’re ok?

N95 mask is use to prevent airborne disease like SARS. While it can easily filter the air pollutants, it’s difficult to breath in it. I don’t think those are the one the Asians uses. Even for regular flu, one does not need N95 mask. I’ll let the professionals from JMG to chime in. I could use the clarification myself.

    • Halou

The EPA will get right on that, as soon as they strip away air pollution controls and other such regulations.

      • Cuberly Deux

…and yep, an emergency kit, even if it’s just roughly the basics is a good idea.

        • BeaverTales

Luckily, I was an outdoor camping fag for many years. I have lots of food that doesn’t require refrigeration at home. Ramen, sardines, soup.

It’s harder to have an Emergency kit to keep in the car in a winter climate, because if you park outside, things can freeze.

That rules out plenty of foods, toiletries and medicines. Obviously not dry food and most pills. I’m thinking at least 2 changes of clothes, towels, jackets and blankets and shoes should always be in the car.. Both my cars are 4wd and I’ve ordered a compact battery jumper.

I always keep, my passport and driver license with me….. and credit cards, ATM cards, a phone charger in my manpurse. I refuse to carry food and blank checks though.

Fuckit, I’m gay and disabled…yes I can carry a manpurse.

I live close to an REI, I’ll see what I can get that might make for good emergency storage from the latest camping gear. First Aid and water purification tabs, Bear spray are the only things I can think of

And the Democrats had 7 years a) to educate the public on the virtues of the ACA and b) to make clear how the GOP was sabotaging the ACA.

Going into the 2016 election, most of the country was still confused about what the ACA was and how it was being undermined.

One of many major messaging failures of the DNC.

By contrast, look how successful the GOP was at driving home the false message that the economy was a mess. Most Americans believed. Now most Americans are not worried about the economy–and it’s the same economy as under Obama.

The question is why is the DNC such a failure at messaging.

    • Treant

When somebody tells you something sucks, you’re far more likely to believe that than believing it’s good. It’s a human failing.

Another human failing is the Simple Answer Fallacy, which can be summed up by a really fuckin’ dumb cousin of mine: “Explain this Big Bang thing to me.” “Do you have a couple years and at least college level physics?” “That’s why I believe God did it.”

The guy who (unethically) dumbs it down to nothing is the one who’s going to be believed by the most people. The actual answer…is always more complicated than that.

    • AmeriCanadian

From what I observe, there is no equivalent of Faux News for the left. Everyone thinks it’s MSNBC or even CNN but they don’t come close. They run negative segments on Democrats nearly as often as they do on Republicans. Faux News uses different tactics when there is big news that doesn’t reflect kindly on Republicans. They bury it, obfuscate it (or outright lie about it), and they play games such as placing a D next to a Republican congressperson’s name (instead of an R). Add to this the typical Faux News viewer does NOT get news from any other source. And it doesn’t help that other forms of media such as radio and newspapers are dying. I don’t see a level playing field for Democrats and their messages.

      • Gianni

You’re right about FUX News as far as that goes. What their loyal dimwit listeners refuse to realize is that FUX is not news. It’s hardcore, far-right-wing opinion, conjecture, conspiracy theory, diversion, and general putdown of anything Democrat. On occasion I punish myself by tuning in to Hannity and can barely manage 30 minutes of his anti-everything that’s not right-wing. He pulls as much diversionary shit against Dems out of his ass as he can possibly squeeze into his time slot. I have yet to hear him report any current, daily, relevant political happenings in Washington and the White House. Never mentions any of Trump’s lies, distortions, equivocations, and chaos mongering. He does, however, repeatedly try to churn up bullshit about Hillary and all sorts of “underhanded” Dem shenanigans – none of which is pertinent to the current mess in DC. They totally exist because of all the non-thinkers out there who swear by the Republican’t party as if it was a divine part of Creation.

        • NowAnAgnostic

I have never watched Fux News as I have only antennae TV, but I do not even watch the local Fox channel.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

While I will agree the DNC didn’t do the best job of explaining the ACA, can we also agree that many Americans themselves aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed and further, were just too damn lazy to even look into it themselves. You can blame the messenger to a degree, but in our civics classes up here in the frozen north of Soviet Canuckistan, we’re taught that it is the citizens responsibility to know their shit….oh wait….civics classes….right…you don’t have those anymore….never mind.

      • joe ho

It’s true. But that puts the burden on politicians to craft a simple message that gets through to the voters. The GOP knows how to do it effectively.

I have very rarely seen Democratic politicians or strategists on the cable shows explain how the GOP was sabotaging the ACA.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

Thus the conundrum that is modern American politics.

        • CanuckDon

The GOP is highly skilled at scaring people and they know that works to gain power. Democrats and Liberals are not built to be so crafty, evil and fear-mongering….which is one of the biggest differences in our ideologies.

          • joe ho

And the reason for our difficulty in gaining and holding on to political power.

      • -M-

This ducking of responsibility is what pisses me off about the argument that it’s entirely the Democrats fault they lost because they didn’t earn voters’ support. While there’s some truth that they didn’t get their message out or whip up enthusiasm, that doesn’t excuse voters for not figuring out the freaking obvious fact that they needed to stop Trump and the Republicans. You’re still responsible for your decisions and their foreseeable consequences. Sociopath vs ‘well, I just couldn’t get enthused’ is not a difficult choice.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

EXACTLY. At the end of the day, the adage is proven: you get the government, and by extension policies, you deserve. If the populace is intelligent and engaged, you get better government, if not, you get Donald Trump. Yes, it really is tragically that simple.

      • UrsusArctos

The truth of that is the “Keep your government out of my Medicare” crowd.

    • leastyebejudged

Democrats had a majority for a relatively short period of time, and managed to get the ACA passed.

Republicans have been in control already for twice as long, yet have managed to accomplish exactly what ?

      • joe ho

lol. You’re confused once again. The GOP was able to peel off support from the DNC by demonizing the ACA and blinding voters to the benefits it was delivering to both them and the economy. Many voters didn’t even know
that Obamacare was the ACA. Many said they liked the ACA but not Obamacare.

The GOP got out the simple message that insurers were dropping out of the market place and premiums were going up. That Obama care was failing.

The DNC did not get the message out that problems with Ocare were being caused by the GOP because a) many GOP governors refused to expand medicaid–putting all the very sick peopleinto the exchanges and b) the GOP congress gutted risk corridors which were compensating insurers until more healthy people signed up. The DNC could easily have cast the GOP as the vilains. But they didn’t.

The GOP has been extremely successful in erasing most of Obama’s policies regarding the environment, consumer protections and civil rights.

They blocked his legislative agenda for 6 years and now everything he did by executive order is being undone by executive order. And during those 6 years they didn’t have control of the government because Obama could veto anything they passed. And they knew it.

But their most important achievement has been to pack the federal judiciary with far-right, religious nutcase judges picked by the Heritage foundation. These are life-time appointments and will set back minority rights (especially LGBT rights) for at least a generation. They will be able to rule as unconstitutional any progressive legislation that gets passed even if the Democrats regain power.

That’s why fucktards like you who undermined the Clinton campaign during the general election have done such an unforgiveable thing.

Of course Hillary would have been just as bad or even worse than Trump. Right?

        • leastyebejudged

lol. except that your initial remarks are not accurate. you don’t understand what the GOP accomplishments are. because your’e an imbecile. and a liar. and totally fucked up. a waste of space. you should delete yourself.

    • Cattleya1

Because a large plurality gets all or most of their ‘news’ from Faux Snooze. They listen to a 24/7 propaganda channel. They have had their heads filled with deliberate lies and disinformation for so long that they presumed that anything the Dems said was demonic lies straight from hell. A large part of our population are utterly incapable of gathering information and critical thought.

      • joe ho

My point is that the Democrats do not counter that with a focused media campaign to directly counter those lies and call them out as liars. The left needs to adopt many of those tactics of the far-right propaganda machine.

As it is, Dems sit back under the naive illusion that truth will come out in the end.

That’s not the case. The brutal tactics of the GOP need to be aggressively countered. Democratic PACs could have been running ads all over the place targeting the GOP’s sabotage of health care. They didn’t.

    • justme

      the answer is FOX news..
propaganda at its best with 35+ years of practice

      • joe ho

Yes. But it’s the responsibility of the DNC to counter that. They don’t.

30 years ago Gingrich’s strategy of redefining words (family values for anti-gay) turned liberal into a dirty word that Dem politicians have run away from for decades.

Dems could easily turn conservative into a dirty word. But they don’t generally have the stomach for it. Hence the advantage goes to the GOP.

  • To be clear…here’s what Trump just did. Insurance set their rates in September. Now in October they just found out that the subsidies that make up part of many people’s insurance premiums aren’t going to be paid by the administration. So in addition to screwing over people (who cares about those of us who don’t get insurance through a job, though, right?) he just screwed over the insurance industry and he ain’t getting away with that.

    • worstcultever

I think you’re right – it’s grandstanding bullshit, which is all he does – not to say it won’t cause chaos, but the industry is starting to get used to it and adjust its schedules for the inevitable pushback/court cases etc

    • UrsusArctos

Weirdly enough, being a self insured with an individual/non-exchange policyholder in an asshole red state that didn’t expand Medicaid, this move isn’t going to clobber me. I called the Insurance Commissoner’s office to verify this.
I also asked if the state of MS intended to sue over the across state lines thing and he all but said “Hell yes”. There’s 50+ Insurance Commissioners who are NOT going to be happy about not getting to set the rules. His comment and the basis of suing was “Just who is expected to enforce law when it’s on an out of state company”. 45* may be surprised just who will be fighting him. Several red state governors who expanded Medicaid are also screwed.

      • Cuberly Deux

Why do so many forget what it was like prior to the ACA?

Actually both are pretty darn good if you ask me.

        • billbear1961

CJ and I saw the old film and were surprised how good it was.

We’ve seen more films from the 40s in the past couple years than ever before, because we’ve been watching Turner.

We’ve been surprised how good many of them are.

One remembers the turkeys one saw on TV from childhood.

          • Cuberly Deux

The original is so atmospheric. I always recommend it for those that grimace at the thought of watching a b&w movie….lol…it’s a good gateway into classic cinema.

          • billbear1961

It’s odd how put off many people are by b&w.

Okay, I looked down on it when I was a KID (but it didn’t stop me from watching), but my tastes have changed since I was 12!

What always matters most to me is how good the story is and how well the actors make me forget I’m watching actors act (if you know what I mean)–everything else takes a backseat.

EDIT: Yes, of course, it matters if the pictures we see on the screen are visually arresting or beautiful, aesthetically pleasing or moving in some way.

I’ve seldom seen a more visually beautiful film than the b&w The Innocents.

          • Cuberly Deux

I never had that b&w disdain, but then my family didn’t get a color tv till 74. Back when tvs were LARGE pieces of furniture. I guess it’d already been b&w exposed for a long time.

Love those old Val Lawton films. Leopard Man is another good one, based on a novel by Cornell Woolrich, who was gay. He also wrote Rear Window, Phantom Lady, Night Has A Thousand Eyes (great movie BTW), The Window, and MANY other sources for movies and classic TV.

      • Dazzer

Another bit of trivia for you about the film. The leading lady, Simone Simon, was having a raging affair at the time with a guy called Dusko Popov. Popov was spying for both the Nazis and the Allies at the time and it’s never been entirely clear as to whether he was a simple double spy, triple spy or quadruple spy throughout WWII.

I met him when he was on the publicity trail for his biography (Spy/Counterspy) and he was entirely charming.

Having talked to other people in the spy game later, I came to the sorrowful conclusion that – apart from the words “and”, “but” and “1942” – everything else in the book was likely a complete fabrication – apart from independent reports that he and Ms Simon were going at it like rabbits.

        • greenmanTN

Simone was also in a movie called The Devil & Daniel Webster, as a female demon named Belle, that is very good. Walter Huston plays Scratch, AKA the devil.

I know not all EOs get very far on just his signature, so…my question is this, Will the payments simply stop? Will they still go on being available as law suits are pending? If the Congress can’t decide by the due date, will the EO become active? More than one question I know. All leading to the same one answer YES they stop, or NO they don’t.

    • safari

Last I knew the executive branch had discretionary authority over the cost sharing payments. Congress could force the issue, but I won’t hold my breath.

I finally nailed down that Stain Stix formula I’ve been working on and made it in white. That’s setting up on the kitchen table at jig speed and will need to be cut before bed (highly cleansing soaps tend to solidify fast).

That didn’t do it so I kept on. Now on the sideboard…lemon scented yellow with a blue swirl soap. And sandalwood/bergamot scented blue with a yellow swirl soap. Plus violet/bergamot scented purple soap with a deep burgundy swirl (which currently looks blood red due to the fact that the violet coloration takes a while to shift in the high pH).

Where are these six physicians groups when it comes to the subject of covering ALL Americans ?

Too busy counting their $$$ ?

    • I think many GP’s and generalists want everyone insured — but specialists do not. This makes sense from their own financial standpoints. GP’s would rather people have the resources to see them — so they do not have to do pro bono work (some GP’s do as much as 30-40% of their work pro bono in urban areas, unpaid or poorly compensated at clinics or waiving bills in their offices), and out of hospital emergency rooms — and the last thing specialists want is large numbers of patients showing up driving their exorbitant rates down on HMO’s and PPO’s. It is a myth at all doctors in the American health care system are millionaires — after medical school bills and malpractice premiums, not all are highly paid at the GP levels.

I told you not too long ago you were very handsome. Are you just shopping for more compliments now? LOL! But Seriously, you are!

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Thanks sweety. In all seriousness, I’ve always had self-esteem issues with my appearance, though not as bad now as it was years ago. Esteban laughs at me sometimes because I’ll look in the mirror and just shit on myself and he just giggles, then hugs me and pulls a Cher in Moonstuck “Snap out of it.” Still the pic of me in the leather shorts is from last year and I’m well on the other side of 50, so I really can’t complain. Rationally I know I’m better looking than some men half my age, but the little boy who was teased, bullied and called ugly can’t quite seem to believe sometimes. Ok, enough with the pity party, time to plot my revenge…..

        • Talisman

          Self-esteem is a thing?

I don’t have any illusions about my attractiveness. Every person I’ve ever been attracted to has literally laughed in my face, and the only sex I’ve had is in the dark recesses of a park or an adult bookstore.

          • whollyfool

I’ve survived that. It’s no fun. They don’t know what they’re missing. Hugs

        • Rebecca Gardner

You are not alone. I have horrible self-esteem. In fact, I am scheduled for some plastic surgery on 11/28 because I think I’m ugly. We all have our insecurities, even when we have loved ones in our lives that think we’re completely nuts for being critical of our looks.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Hugs and good wishes on the surgery. We all have to do what makes us feel good about ourselves. I live by this simply rule: if I make any changes in my life, be they physical, emotional or anything else, I do them for me, not for anyone else; I only owe the person in the mirror.

In this modern era the pictures and video that is taken will inform so much of our future responses. I always go back to something like 9/11– imagine if there were cell phone-taken pictures and video of the conditions inside. It’d have changed history.

      • houstonray

I have often thought about that very thing. It’s so weird to watch specials on it, usually around the anniversaries, and when we watch the footage it’s so “un-HD” and all news stations captured except for the rare person who was filming something else and captured it by accident. Now we’re so used to something seen from every possible angle, in super HD quality, inside and out….it would have changed history indeed.

        • safari

I didn’t mean to be crude — but inside accounts with images would have stopped a lot of truthism, which I find to be the genesis of much of where we are today.

A little ways over from us lightning hit a big pine tree. The thing pretty much exploded. Luckily nobody got hurt since the sites on both sides of that tree were occupied. Closest I’ve ever been to a lightning strike.

        • safari

3 times: lightning hit my neighbor’s areal antenna, came inside from a backyard “camping” and the yard got struck, left my car to get to my apartment and my hair stood on end.

          • SoCalGal20

We heard the sizzle. It was weird. My hair did not stand on end. The tree exploding and getting sliced in half was very loud.

          • safari

I can’t imagine that. I never *saw* / was there for anything. What you went through is truly terrifying.

          • SoCalGal20

It was definitely an “exciting” way to start a camping trip!

There’s an epic diary over at Daily Kos. You can read it here.
    https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2017/10/13/1706683/-What-Happened-When-I-Took-A-Walk-Today
“It’s a sunny day, and I’m walking to the post office.

Just as I was turning to go up the steps, a woman calls out to me. She’s tall, white, carefully groomed, with a little bit of Michelle Bachmann gleaming in her eyes.

“Excuse me, Sir — would you like to sign a pro-life petition?”

    I turn.

“You need to know, madam, that my mother’s life was saved by a late-term abortion. I was born three years later. My brother was born a year after that. My life, my brother’s life, and three children of ours were all made possible by my mother’s abortion.

“You call yourself pro-life, but the things you’re promoting would have ensured that my mother DIED on the operating table!” I am livid, and as a professional vocalist, I know how to project my voice and articulate. No mumbler, I.

She backs away from me. “Sir, my daughter is in the car!”

“Then your daughter needs to know that you are advocating for a policy that will kill women all over this country! You should be ashamed of yourself!” She goes around the side of her car and gets in.

    • Bj Lincoln

Thank you for putting her in her place.

      • Picabo

To clarify, that was not me. It is a diary on Daily Kos.

    • Talisman

These people are pro-fetus, not pro-life. If they were pro-life, they would care about the children *after* they are born.

      • Steve Teeter

They’re not even pro-fetus. They’re anti-woman. Using the threat of a catastrophic unplanned pregnancy or worse, they want to terrify women into not having any decent, real sex life. The kind of sex life they (men all) take for granted as a God given birthright.

        • Uncle Mark

EXACTLY !! If they were even pro-fetus, they would insist that their Republican leaders insist that pre-natal care would be paid for by the gov’t or would be raising funds for pre-natal care through their churches.

It reminds me when I used to do a lot of volunteer work through my former church. The hypocrisy from the loudest chest-thumpers was stunning. I remember a conversation between several church ladies…collecting supplies for single mothers, where they said something to the effect that ‘providing these tramps free things, will only encourage them to have more children.’ Being the idealistic, young contrarian I was, I had to ask them ‘how they somehow came ahead by having more children because they get the occasional box of Pampers or formula.’ These were also the same wretched people, who didn’t want to do anything to help the underprivileged, lest the “great unwashed” end up in their church. The only reason these church ladies did anything was for personal recognition, as opposed to the wonderful, quiet, humble people I met, who volunteered because they really cared about their fellow man.

      • Librarykid

They want people to pay for having sex. In their twisted minds, sex is not for expressing love or bonding. It is solely for creating babies which is partly why they are against birth control and same-sex relations also. They are sick, twisted evil people who seek to dominate the world in the name of the Lard, not that this is news to thinking people
        .

The buzz that is out there is so bad,” a “high-powered publicist” told the magazine. “I am just not sure what type of celeb interviewer she is,” said another publicist. “She’s awkward at the moment.” A NBC spokesperson also denies that Kelly’s show is having issues booking celebs, saying the show has “celebrities booked for weeks and months to come.”

When that well-publicized McDonald’s incident occurred – the one involving the customer who was served a coffee that was too hot and that burned her – I thought to myself, “Oh shit. We’re into a new era of frivolous litigation.”

          • safari

*sigh* I’m *less* cynical than you. And that’s depressing.

          • Talisman

            Have you researched that case?

Stella Liebeck and her son, who was driving, stopped at a McDonald’s one morning. She was wearing a pair of sweatpants. When she got her coffee, she put it between her legs and took of the lid to add sugar/creamer. When her son pulled forward, the coffee spilled on her, and caused 2nd and 3rd degree burns to her inner thighs, vagina, and buttocks. She was hospitalized and required skin grafts to the affected areas.

She merely asked the McDonalds’s for assistance in paying her medical bills. When they refused, she sued. It was discovered that the McDonald’s in question (like many of the stores throughout the country) had been cited numerous times by the Health Department for turning up the temperature on their coffee makers.

Brewed coffee has a shelf life of 30 minutes. By turning up the temp, you can extend that to an hour or more. Normally, coffee is served at around 140 degrees. This coffee was around 180-190 degrees. The high temperature combined with the wicking effect of the sweatpant fabric was found to cause burns within seconds. McDonald’s actually produced documents that showed that Stella was just the latest victim – there had been complaints going back a decade or more.

Stella just wanted her medical costs covered, and that’s all she sued for. The jury awarded her on the order of $3 million USD in punitive damages. That was the equivalent of McDonald’s global coffee sales for two days at the time. The amount was reduced on appeal, and Stella later settled out of court.

Stella was 79 at the time of the incident in 1992, and her family says that she went from a vital, active woman to a frail shell of a being. She died in 2004.

          • another_steve

I’m a believer in the concept of “personal responsibility.” I realize that that’s not the “in” thing these days.

When she got her coffee, she put it between her legs and took of the lid to add sugar/creamer.

            She was an asshole.

            Rational people don’t do that.

          • zhera

No, Steve. She was injured because of too hot coffee. Drinkable coffee can be placed between legs, and can be spilled on body, without causing 3rd degree burns.

There are plenty of assholes suing for nothing. This woman was not one of them.

          • Talisman

Also, 1992…cup holders were not necessarily standard equipment. I just googled, and the car her son was driving, a Ford Probe, DID NOT HAVE A CUP HOLDER!

So, how was she supposed to “safely” handle her coffee?

          • Talisman

Seriously? You’ve never done that? It’s almost a natural act.

Did you even read my post? It wasn’t only her actions, but the temperature of the coffee.

BTW, the jury did find her 20% culpable, and that affected the amount she was awarded.

          • cleos_mom

Horse puckey. It was her personal responsibility to carry a dipstick thermometer with her to check fast-food beverages with.

          • Talisman

The only anger I really have is when I service I’m paying for is down for an extended period. Especially cable/internet. Unlike the power company, to whom I pay based on my usage, I set a paid fee for my cable/internet….so for it to be down for 12 or 24 hours is unacceptable. And I think they should be required to discount my bill for the outage. It’ll never happen, though.

          • safari

My best response from the cable company happened when my roommate — a staffer for a state representative — called their lobbying office to complain. Strange how that worked.

          • another_steve

When you’re without service for more than a day, tell customer service that you want a credit on your bill for the total number of days you were without service. Keep careful notes.

They rarely balk. If they do, ask to speak to a supervisor and advise that unless a credit is applied to your next bill, you’ll contact the newspapers in your area to ask them to intervene.

            Works like a charm.

          • safari

            Sure. Use that *inside* knowledge.

          • Talisman

I worked tech support for a cable/internet provider in the late 90s. We were told specifically to ignore any requests for credits due to an outage.

          • another_steve

I always ask to speak to a supervisor and always get his or her name.

I always threaten to contact local media if my demand is not met.

            Works like a charm.

          • Natty Enquirer

It’ll never happen if you wait for them to do it. You need to call and demand an adjustment or threaten to end service on the spot.

          • William

I once threatened to tie the phone line to my bumper and drive.

          • William

My landline telephone used to go out of service all the time, especially if it was raining. The absolute worst was when I had a retinal blowout and went to call the eye doctor and the phone didn’t work. Years of calling customer service didn’t fix it. Finally I resorted to a yearly letter to the Texas Public Utility Commission. That got the line working for a longer period and personal phone calls from some high up person at AT&T.

Most states have a similar regulatory agency over utilities. The companies they regulate do not like to be contacted by state officials and will jump through hoops to prevent a recurrence.

      • Talisman

Why? MGM is not responsible for the actions of a Customer. They weren’t negligent or complicit. Suing them is counterproductive.

Of course, none of that will stop people.

        • The_Wretched

          Negligence is a tricky business.

It’s Friday Night Off-Topic Time, right?

OT: wanna give a shout-out to a movie that was even BETTER than I expected (and I expected a lot), “Professor Marston and the Wonder Women” (saw it in preview last night!)

Disclaimer: first and foremost, this movie celebrates female sexuality—but you WILL see Luke Evans w/ his shirt off! (Perhaps bare-bummed? Not my area of special interest). And queer, queer, queer! [Written and directed by QWOC Angela Robinson]

Just really outstanding. The dialogue crackles, the sex is HOT! [Menage a trois but, as I said, from a female gaze.] Gotta say, while I’ve always been open to bondage, my interest is definitely piqued!

The penultimate scene: just can’t get it out of my head. So moving. [As was the last REAL “snap shot” of the two “wonder women” in their elder years (together for decades, after Marston had passed away).] “For Your Consideration”, Academy: Rebecca Hall (damn, why haven’t I seen anything w/ her before? Off to imdB!)

    Seriously, see this movie!

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4cMJ3rzdpI

    • Mucho Gracias for the recommendation!

    • safari

When was the last film with female sexuality?

Gack, there have been so few. Television (including, but not exclusively, streaming) has been SO much better.

Desert Hearts. Mulholland Dr. Imagine Me and You. And most recently, Carol.

    • The_Wretched

Just watched the trailer, I’ll pitch it to the wife. It looks great.

    • JCF

It was also really thought-provoking, from a psychology standpoint.

[Gonna talk out of my ass here—feel free to correct me]

I thought of “BDSM” as Bondage/Domination&Sado-Masochism. Great if you’re into it, but not my cuppa tea (I know, Call Me Vanilla).

      But Marston’s theory is

      Domination
      Inducement
      Submission
      Compliance

In his schema, Domination & Compliance go together—and they’re unhealthy. Forcing people to do what they don’t want to do…Hello, Wars!

But Inducement & Submission ARE the healthy pairing. Sort of a “Getting to Yes”, where people do what you want to do, ONLY when THEY want to do it too! [Some of the trailers for the movie have Marston saying “Happiness comes from submitting to a loving authority”. When you FIRST hear him say it in lecture, to his female students at Radcliffe, my mind first reacts “Uh-oh”.] And you can see, from the OUTSIDE, like Marston looks like a polygamist.

But we get to see the INSIDE, of course. And that’s not the way it is at all. Of the three people in this (I know this word sounds silly) “throuple”, there’s a dominant one…and it ain’t Bill Marston or Olive Byrne! So when at the end…heh, you gotta see it for yourself!

Mind you, I’m still not completely convinced (guess I’d have to read WMMarston’s published psychology works). But it IS thought-provoking. OK, all you Subs & Doms, sound off! 😉

      • JCF

“from the OUTSIDE, like Marston looks like a polygamist.”

Some critics (amateur, as much as I’ve read) have dissed the film’s historicity, saying “as much as can be proven, WM Marston WAS a polygamist (not polyamory). There’s no proof that Elizabeth and Olive were sexually involved.”

This line of critique pisses the HELL out of me—for it’s heteronormativity.

If Olive was “Oliver”, and lived w/ Elizabeth for ***38 years*** until “his” death, would anyone have a problem assuming (absent evidence to the contrary) their relationship included physical intimacy? No, it’s ONLY because it’s a SAME-SEX COUPLE (particularly a female one), that suddenly those outside the relationship get the vapors, and demand “proof” [“Give us those cunnilingus close-ups, or we’ll say they’re just Mormon-style sister-wives!”]

        This DOUBLE-STANDARD is BULLSHIT.

A beautiful bright smile like that can be marketable – socially and professionally – if you’re into that.

Unless you live the life of an ascetic, it’s pretty difficult to maintain a perpetual set of pearly whites. There are effective whitening treatments, but the professionally done versions are pricey. And, like dieting, if you revert to your old bad habits, the problem soon returns.

We humans weren’t designed to live past age 40 or 50.

Evolution says, “Fuck your stained and rotten teeth, if you’re past age 40 or 50. Die, superfluous bitch.”

          • Talisman

Just saw where George Clooney has been accused of sexual harassment and blacklisting.
Have to say in this case I’m taking it with a grain of salt, given who’s making it and the fact she is retweeting someone who once claimed date rape doesn’t exist.

If you’re rich and famous, many will fall prey to you and your “charms.” Human nature, that.

I may desire your attention and your fawning over me, but I may not welcome your sexual advances.

          • TampaDink

I do not believe that the women who have accused Weinstein were asking for it.

          • another_steve

Please. What human being – male or female – would desire sexual contact with that creature.

I assume they all firmly said “no.”

            No equivocation of any kind.

          • Talisman

Power is…powerful…and careers are on the line.

          • another_steve

Well, there we descend into the murky waters.

If I submit to you sexually not because I welcome it but because I feel my career is on the line, am I responsible for the outcome of that?

          • Talisman

Responsibility is irrelevant. If the sexual advance is unwelcome, even if you ultimately consent, it’s a criminal act.

He said/She said…hard to prove in a court.

          • another_steve

If the sexual advance is unwelcome, even if you ultimately consent, it’s a criminal act.

Not sure what that means. Seems to me, you either say “yes” or “no.”

If I say yes but am thinking to myself, “I hate this. He’s disgusting. I don’t want to do this” – I’m still saying “yes.”

Is the concept of “personal responsibility” totally dead today?

          • Talisman

Is consent under duress really consent?

          • another_steve

            Define “duress.”

Is the threat “You’ll never get a role again in one of my films” – duress?

          • Talisman

            Yes.

          • another_steve

Okay. But not in my book.

If I’m on the casting couch and the guy in charge says to me, “Do this or you’ll never get a role in one of my films,” I have a decision to make.

Either I say, “Yes, I’ll do it” or I say “No, I won’t do it.” My choice.

If I say “no,” I may be ending my career with this particular person and his company, but it’s still my choice.

          • Talisman

            That doesn’t even make sense.

          • another_steve

It makes no sense only if one rejects the concept of personal responsibility.

          • Talisman

No, it makes no sense because you’re forced to have sex against your will to advance your career. That is not a personal decision.

          • JCF

Your typical starlet on the casting couch usually doesn’t have the luxury of saying “Hey ho, I’ve kiboshed my career w/ the person&company, but there’s always this other one I can immediately fall into!” [Especially when {shock!} other “persons” heading companies are usually Other Males, who may have gotten a report on which starlet “wouldn’t play ball(s)” w/ the Man-in-Charge]

“Do this or you’ll never get a role in one of my films”: in MY book, Take This Fucker Down! Don’t say “Yes” OR “No”…just Call Sam! (Per the other part of her show opener. This one was actually first, the PSA after)

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8sFfsIiU2s

          • Talisman

Exactly. Word gets around when a person won’t play the “game”. Look at Tippi Hedren. Hitchcock ruined her career, and no one outside his productions would even touch her.

          • another_steve

Verbal sexual harassment is wrong and evil in any context. I don’t buy into “victim culture” though. The “I can’t fight back because this or that is at stake” mindset.

I realize that victim culture is a popular leftist construct. That said, I’m leftist and I don’t buy into it.

Really, Steve, get help or at least learn to shut the fuck up, you twisted piece of shit.

          • Karl Dubhe

An employer, or anyone else in a position of authority, who forces someone make that choice is committing an assault.

It’s an abuse of power, which is what rape is.

          • another_steve

Rape in the form of verbal intimidation? I don’t think so.

Rape involves unwanted sexual touching. If I verbally intimidate you – “do this or you’ll never work here again” – that’s sexual harassment.

A very bad thing, but not “rape.”

          • Karl Dubhe

It’s an abuse of power. It’s a form of rape, granted the ‘man’ wasn’t very good at physically raping people. But that doesn’t mean he didn’t try.

Steve, stop talking on this topic. Please.

          • cleos_mom

Maybe you could familiarize yourself with the phenomenon of seduction via intimidation.

          • another_steve

People attempt to intimidate me from time to time. (Not sexually, though; those days are long over). I’m a nelly boy and present as an easy pushover.

I’m able to resist intimidation, though. I’m able to say “fuck you” and walk away.

I assume most mentally competent adult women are capable of saying that and walking away too… yes?

          • another_steve

Unwanted verbal sexual advances happen all the time. Go into any singles bar and see. If I say “please stop it” and you don’t, it’s sexual harassment. Not “rape,” sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is a bad and evil thing.

At some point, as a responsible mentally competent human being, I have a decision to make. Do I put up with the sexual harassment or do I not.

It can be a very difficult decision, but it’s mine to make.

          • cleos_mom

IMO a total stranger demanding that you smile is a form of harassment.

Once I was having dinner in a short-order place, enjoying some quiet time after a particularly chaotic day at work, when a guy plunked his ass down on the stool next to me and said “SMILE! It’s not that bad!” I responded with “how the hell do you know? For all you know my house might have just burned down with my only child in it!” He apologized and later I regretted not asking him if he approached men he didn’t know and ordered them to smile at him.

          • another_steve

I so agree, c_m. I hate the “smile!” thing.

One of the most trite and obnoxious comments there is – particularly when it comes from a stranger.

          • Talisman

Yep. The music in that scene is especially moving.

    • greenmanTN

I wouldn’t count on that last part.

I have had problems with insomnia for nearly all my life, have at times taken enough diphenhydramine to bring down an elephant. Melatonin works for me, but I get very vivid dreams, which can be good or bad, depending.

With me it’s the inability to get my brain to shut down enough so I can sleep. This may only work for me, but this is something that works. I have a small, quiet fan on the bedside table pointed directly at me. The noise it does make is white noise, drowns out a lot of extraneous sounds.

I lie on my side, facing the fan so the breeze is on my face. Here’s the tricky part. ONLY think of the sensation of the wind on your face, just the physical sensation of it. No politics, no ‘to do list,’ no replaying the movie you watched earlier, ONLY the sensation of air on your skin. At first it’s hard to keep thoughts from invading but you get better at blocking them and your body will take it from there. If thoughts do intrude don’t get frustrated or angry, don’t scold yourself for ‘messing up,’ just start over again.

Works for me, though it’s for getting to sleep, not necessarily staying asleep.

There are deep breathing exercises which work on the same principle, distracting the brain from the internal monologue by focusing on breathing depth, counts of holding it, mouth vs nose, etc. It distracts the brain with the physical so the mental can shut down.

      Good luck!

      • BeaverTales

I just read celebrity gossip, eat a high carb dessert, take 420 and pleasure myself when the insomnia gets bad. I used to read math books in order to doze off, but my weird brain now enjoys reading math more than pr0n, so it keeps me awake and I learn a lot, but still don’t sleep. Pr0n just makes me sleepy, lol….just not sleepy enough I guess I’m the exact opposite of a hot date.

I have no idea what a password SHA1 ans “salt” means…Disqus has been sending me a pop-up about this for a week.

Can someone with cybersecurity cred explain what this actually means in plain English??

Yesterday, on October 5th, we were alerted to a security breach that impacted a database from 2012. While we are still investigating the incident, we believe that it is best to share what we know now. We know that a snapshot of our user database from 2012, including information dating back to 2007, was exposed. The snapshot includes email addresses, Disqus user names, sign-up dates, and last login dates in plain text for 17.5MM users. Additionally, passwords (hashed using SHA1 with a salt; not in plain text) for about one-third of users are included.

We sincerely apologize to all of our users who were affected by this breach. Our intention is to be as transparent as possible about what happened, when we found out, what the potential consequences may be, and what we are doing about it.

    Timeline Of Events:

Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 4:18 PM PDT, we were contacted by an independent security researcher, who informed us that the Disqus data may be exposed.
Thursday, October 5, 2017 at 4:56PM PDT we obtained the exposed data and immediately began to analyze the data and verify its validity.
Friday, October 6, 2017, we started contacting users and resetting the passwords of all the users that had passwords included in the breach.
Friday, October 6, 2017, before 4:00PM PDT, we published this public disclosure of the incident.
    Potential Impact For Users:

Right now there isn’t any evidence of unauthorized logins occurring in relation to this. No plain text passwords were exposed, but it is possible for this data to be decrypted (even if unlikely). As a security precaution, we have reset the passwords for all affected users. We recommend that all users change passwords on other services if they are shared.

Email addresses are in plain text here, so it’s possible that affected users may receive spam or unwanted emails.

At this time, we do not believe that this data is widely distributed or readily available. We can also confirm that the most recent data that was exposed is from July, 2012.

    • whollyfool

I think they’re trying to tell you that the password was encrypted, and the level of encryption (hashed using SHA1 with a salt) . They want you to know that they did the right thing by not storing the password plain without encrypting it like some places have….

      • Silver Badger

Isn’t it awesome how many highly gifted, super intelligent and talented people there are here on JMG. I have never asked a question which didn’t get answers. Fortunately, there is still room for those of us who’s main talents include baking cookies, taking out the trash and rolling a good joint.

        • whollyfool

Wow, that’s now how they phrased it in middle school, lol!

Your comment made me go check that I was right 🙂 and I ended up finding out that SHA1 encryption is pretty old and should not be used! Great job, Disqus!

Having a wide variety of skill sets is important to a community (I’m bad at all 3 things you mentioned), and having a community is important to me.

I rarely feel at home anywhere, but I feel at home here at JMG, and I’m very grateful. This is quite a (virtual) place.

          Big hugs to everyone! 🙂

“a salt is random data that is used as an additional input to a one-way function that “hashes” a password or passphrase.”

    • Tulle Christensen

It means if someone can figure out the salt (which is a small text string, e.g. in the 1980s the salt on the passwords in our system was mT but that used the older MD2 encryption), using the now known problems with the SHA1 your credentials could be faked without even knowing your password by coming up with a text string the hashes to the same value,

early this year it was shown that two different sets of text could hash to the same value, which is no no for this type of system

added: don’t freak out the SHA1 salt is 20 characters much bigger than my example of 2 for MD2

      • BeaverTales

Ok, I think I get it. It’s easy to decrypt [D#nal# T#ump] and [#on#ld Tr#m#] if salted differently and associated with the same user ID.

I can make new passwords but I’m not brained enough to make them long, strong and keep them changed every few weeks. Luckily I always used a relatively easy non-english pwd on Disqus. Everything else, I’m thinking is going to take a lot more creativity than I have.

        • netxtown

I took a date that was important to me (NOT the birthdate!) then intermixed it with partial spelling of first/last name…

          ex: 10/28/72 and donnie trumpette
          d-1-o-0-n-2-t-8-r-7-u-2-p
          1-T-0-r-2-u-8-m-7-p-2

it looks much more complicated than it is when hitting the keys. the two just kind of flow together…..

you can also add a year and quarter designator (or month/day) to the end.
          ex:
          d1o0n2t8r7u2p2017q1
          d1o0n2t8r7u2p2017q2
          d1o0n2t8r7u2p2017q3 etc….

it’s doing the mash…it was a monster mash.

          • BeaverTales

            This is a good idea.

        • -M-

Basically the alert means it’s a good idea to change your passwords now just in case. And a reminder not to use the same password for different sites. Password managers can help because they can make and remember strong passwords for you so all you have to remember is the one that unlocks the manager. The recommendation now is to pick hard to guess passwords and not reuse them rather than change them often, because changing too often meant people picked easily guessed passwords in order to remember them.

SHA-1 is a hashing algorithm, a lot like encryption except it only works one way. Salt is some random data they picked to add to your password before hashing it, so that even if someone uses the same password somewhere else that uses SHA-1 hashes the two hashes will be different.

The site stores the hash instead of your password and assumes that if the password you give it produces the same hash it has for your account that you entered the right password because there’s billions of different hashes. This way even if someone steals the list of hashes they don’t know your password so there’s still more work, finding some password that generates the same hash, before they can log in as you and thanks to the salting they have to do it over again for other sites because the list of passwords that would be equivalent to yours will be different and effectively random for a different salt value.

Argh, does this happen to anyone else? Every year, the flu shot affects me in this strange way: about a half day after getting the shot, it causes flu-like achey-ness in just one place, my pelvic area, for about 6-8 hours (this year, it’s just my left buttock). I should go to bed anyway, but I hate having my night dictated to by the fact I can’t sit on my arse! [One of those Vari-desk things would be the ticket.]

    • DaddyRay

I don’t have that reaction, usually I feel like I get a mild form of the flu.

  • DaddyRay

I think networks in the US should do this at the next debate

This has absolutely nothing to do with formal authorization by Congress. That term has not deterred the tRumpster before.
It is solely because the nickname of the Affordable Care Act happens to be Obamacare.
Anything with the name Obama attached to it is destined for destruction by this idiot.

Sad to say but his base will still believe that the world respects us when in reality they think we’re a laughingstock or worse.

      • Cackalaquiano

Actually, I doubt they give a shit. I think the more the rest of the world detests us and the more our government pokes other countries in the eye, the prouder and more patriotic they would feel. These folks thrive on illogical belligerance.

The chaos that 45 must spread is a cancer on the world. There’s no doubt that he will continue to spread his mayhem and chaos around as long as he possibly can. Given that his sole purpose in office is to disrupt EVERYTHING there’s now absolutely no doubt that once Mueller pulls his trigger 45 will threaten the entire world with the nuclear codes.

    • worstcultever

I hadn’t thought we’re that close to Dumpy’s end – but the buzz everywhere now seems to be that it’s closer than I thought. Stuff like Corker is the stodgy DC version of panic. I fucking hope so.

            Colorado born and raised here.

They didn’t legalize it until after we left. We couldn’t afford to live there any longer, but we wouldn’t move back even if we could.

  • Stubenville

First, I don’t condone this; it will cause a world of hardship and pain for some of the most vulnerable members of our society.

But is this a coincidence, or are there some Republicans out there who are very, very clever? They essentially killed Obamacare with no replacement, and 45 has the blood all over his hands if it goes badly (and it will.)

  • goofy_joe

Progressives create, Conservatives destroy. This isn’t a disputed argument, just look at their actions. All he has done is try and tear down all of Obama’s accomplishments. He hasn’t created anything, besides distrust on the international (and domestic) stage.

And yes, they are “real” conservatives.
