Tenth Hurricane Of Season Ties 124-Year Record

The New York Times reports:

With Tropical Storm Ophelia’s transition to Hurricane Ophelia on Thursday, 2017 became the first year in more than a century — and only the fourth on record — in which 10 Atlantic storms in a row reached hurricane strength. Franklin. Gert. Harvey. Irma. Jose. Katia. Lee. Maria. Nate. Ophelia.

Ophelia, far out in the Atlantic, does not pose a threat to the United States, though it may affect Ireland. But it puts this year in the history books by at least one measure.

The last time 10 consecutive Atlantic storms became hurricanes was in 1893 — and because tracking technology was far more primitive then, meteorologists say, some weak tropical storms or tropical depressions may have gone undetected within that streak.

Britain’s Telegraph reports:

Hurricane Ophelia is crossing the Atlantic Ocean and could bring wet weather and gusts of up to 70mph when it hits Britain’s shores.

The tropical storm was named a hurricane overnight and the US National Hurricane Centre has warned it could strengthen over the coming days. The west of the country will see the worst of the weather, with winds of between 60mph and 70mph forecast.

It will coincide with the 30th anniversary of the Great Storm of 1987, which hit southern England overnight on October 15. The storm caused damage estimated at £1 billion and claimed 18 lives. Met Office forecaster Alex Burkhill said: “Ophelia became a hurricane overnight and the forecast track takes it eastwards towards Iberia for the weekend.

  • Tawreos

At least it is staying away from Puerto Rico, I think they have quite enough to be getting on with.

    • Tulle Christensen

but the new expanded hurricane season is for another 6 weeks. It use to end on November 1st, but they expanded it till December a few years ago

    • kaydenpat

And Trump is threatening to pull FEMA from Puerto Rico. Bloody unbelievable.

      • ColdCountry

Inhumane, cruel, murderous, but, alas, not unbelievable, not for Dump.

    • Stogiebear

This has been a terrible year for Puerto Rico and hurricanes. First they are threatened by Hurricane Irma, then devastated by Hurricane Maria, and now Hurricane Shitgibbon is hovering over them trying to destroy the entire territory.

  • netxtown

And hoping it stays away from my beautiful Azores. (If you haven’t been there, you won’t understand.)

    • pch1013

I’ve been to Madeira, so I sort of understand.

      • netxtown

YES! Finally! Somebody who knows I’m not crazy….

  • Tawdry D’Tails

You don’t often hear “Ireland” and “hurricane” in the same sentence. What a messed up year.

    • yes b’y

Don’t they travel west across the ocean from Africa?

  • bambinoitaliano

While we point fingers at each other claiming which generation cause the most damages, billions of living species are hunkering down waiting for the inevitable destruction of this planet.

    • Snownova

Oh no, the planet and life in general are going to be just fine. This world has seen some pretty extreme climates over the past billion years, some even faster than what we humans are now causing. It’s us humans and our civilization that we have to worry about.

      • fuow

There used to be a saying, back in the 1970s: We need the earth, the earth doesn’t need us.
Of course, we also used to say: Don’t mess with Mother Nature.

        • Tawreos

I guess nowadays we are supposed to just grab her by the pussy

      • vorpal 😼

The real cockroaches (not the metaphorical Republican ones) will continue long after we’ve managed to spectacularly kill ourselves off.

        • Mark

And I think the fruit fly is supposed to be virtually indestructible as well.

      • ColdCountry

When I’ve heard people wailing about how ‘it’s the end of the world!’, I point out that the planet will probably survive, it’s the humans, and a lot of other species that won’t. Then I ask why that would be a problem, and they stare at me in disbelief, as though without humans here to see it, the world doesn’t exist. Odd.

      • The_Wretched

        Wrong. No.

The planet will exist the same way Mars or Venus exists. The biome is another story.

We’re in a massive extinction event on the same scale and that what did in the dinosaurs. Vast segments of the planet all all but dead and dying including the reef ecosystems and Gulf of Mexico “dead zone”.

        • Karl Dubhe

PETM, not the dinosaurs. The dino’s died from a meteor strike, perhaps with a large lava eruption on the Indian subcontinent.

We’re gassing ourselves, and everything else.

  • Leo
    • Bluto

      WHAT!

    • Tread

Just fucking unbelievable. The damage these assholes are doing to our country. Hope you’re happy BernieBros, SteinBots, and non-voting assholes. Hope it was worth it.

      • The_Wretched

Again, if a valid election is so close that fringe candidates are the cause of your candidate losing, your candidate was very weak. Worse, what’s the solution? Ban or bar 3rd party players of all kinds? What shithole democracy would that be.

But 2016 was anything but valid. There was crosscheck which invalidated hundreds of thousands of voter registrations – including more than the margin in those 3 midwestern States. There’s the Electoral Collage that allows (twice now!) the popular vote winner to lose. There’s the unauditable vote records in many State – it’s literally impossible to do recounts due to electronic only vote records. There’s the Russian interference. That’s three issues. I could go on to recite gerrymandering and issues 5-13 but this comment is too long already.

so yeah, Hating the people who didn’t do what you wanted them to will get them to do what you want.

OTOH, you did at least have some nuance and manage to not smear the entire left with a broad brush.

        • Tread

Stop it with this bullshit. The harm that Bernie Sanders did to the Democratic party during the 2016 election and, by extension, to the country, is immeasurable. This “weak candidate” lie is the most insidious of all the lie from what happened during the 2016 election. Bernie helped start it and you idiots ran with it. People like you were the problem. You knew the consequences, but had to vote your “conscience.” Well, I hope you enjoy watching your “conscience” destroy everything we held near and dear while killing other Americans through neglect and fear.

          • The_Wretched

” Well, I hope you enjoy watching your “conscience”

Again with the smears and lies. I voted Hillary easily. I’d have much more respect for the Russian infighting trolls / Dem loyalists if y’all didn’t make shit up.

Again, and that’s a sign to stop engaging, never mind, go see my comment again your point was already addressed and you failed to rebut on point, going for a personal attack instead.

      • Ninja0980

But my purity, corporate money etc.

    • ByronK

      WHAT THE FUCK?!!!

    • ColdCountry

“Remain engaged.” Tell them what to do.

  • BeaverTales

Let’s just hope it won’t hit PR and VI again…they have had it worse than anyone else in America. Every state on the gulf coast has been hit this year, but since they all voted Trump, they likely won’t be neglected.

    • Tulle Christensen

It will not hit the new world, it may hit somewhere in Europe

  • fuow

Good thing global warming is just a libtard myth.

  • Pete Wascher

getting harder and harder to deny climate change . . . .

    • vorpal 😼

You just need to cover your ears and scream, “LIBTARD CONSPIRACY!” even louder.

    • kaydenpat

      Not for Conservatives.

  • Frostbite

Wow. There were gays throwing around storms 124 years ago? Cool.

    • bambinoitaliano

Where do you think Marvel get its X-Men idea from? :p

    • JCF

      Hurricane Oscar (Wilde).

        It’ll ride up with wear.

    • BearEyes

      That’s a joke, right?

      • HandyAndy

It’s a promotion for their new pizza delivery bag system. They’re making a small limited-edition number of jackets. Anyone who places an order online via their website or app in October is automatically entered to win a jacket.

        • BearEyes

          Tks. Promo gimmick I understand

      • bambinoitaliano

It’s part of the company’s ad campaign. Customers can enter to win the limited edition of the jackets.

  • DoctorDJ

    Hello, Chinese Hoax (TM) #10.

  • Ninja0980

Climate change is a myth though.

  • Mickey Bitsko

Looks like Ireland is going to get the brunt of Ophelia.

  • andrew

All these hurricanes are a clear sign that God is angry at America for electing Trump.

    • Gianni

Let’s hope the Irish don’t hold that against us. Besides, I have heard more than once that Donnie was God’s choice to be Prez. I should be confused, but I’m not. Hmmmm….. 🙂

  • Matt G, Rochester

Ten CONSECUTIVE hurricanes. And there’s still two months of hurricane season left? We’re effed.

  • Gianni

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of an Atlantic hurricane going east and not toward us.
