Orlando Honors Pulse Victims With Rainbow Crosswalk

The work finished on National Coming Out Day.

CBS News reports:

A crosswalk to honor the Pulse nightclub victims was completed early Wednesday by the city of Orlando. A petition on change.org for the installation of the sidewalk was signed by more than 2,000 people to pledge their support to honor the men and women who lost their lives at Pulse on June 12, 2016.

On Monday, the OnePULSE Foundation hosted the first Pulse memorial town hall at the Orlando Repertory Theater to discuss plans for permanent a Pulse memorial. Also on Monday, the Orlando City Council approved the foundation’s permit request to install a new fence, benches and other improvement around the nightclub building.

  • PickyPecker

How long until it is vandalized? (sorry, feeling very pessimistic so far today)

  • MikeBx2

    Beautiful and heart wrenching.

  • Pollos Hermanos

Well that’s going to piss off Mat Staver and his Orlando headquartered Liberty Counsel.

    • Ninja0980

The FOTF hate group for Florida is also based there.

    • JoeMyGod

Matt Barber once mentioned on Twitter that Liberty Counsel is based in Orlando. I pointed out that their office is actually in Maitland (north of Orlando) and he accused me of giving directions to potential terrorists. Seriously.

      • Pollos Hermanos

Poor Bam Bam. He’s so irrelevant now.

      • Gustav2

LOL, like potential terrorists don’t have the google machines!

      • Tawreos

They have an all powerful god watching over them and they fear someone telling people what city they are located in, gotta love that faith.

EDIT: This literally took me less than five seconds to find.

        • BockMcMillan

Thoughts and prayers going their way (but I will not reveal if they are good- or ill-willed)

        • Tawreos

How dare you display their publicly available contact information? What about the terrorists or, god forbid, people with differing viewpoints?

          • Christopher

            Well, what about them? ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Tawreos

You know they can’t handle differing viewpoints. =)

          • Christopher

Or empathy, rational thinking, sanity, common sense, etc….

The list literally goes on and on of the stuff they can’t handle.

        • TheManicMechanic

I hear they have paintings of Mohammad in compromising positions all over their office walls. ๐Ÿ˜‰

          • Christopher

I just read that on the internet! It must be true!

      • boatboy_srq

Apparently turrrrrusts can’t use either a phone book or Google.

Isn’t that in keeping with the non-taxpaying benefits-collecting useless immygrunts what are taking Real Ahmurrrrcans’ jerbs?

      • thatotherjean

Are they not in the phone book (Does Maitland still have a phone book)?

      • Paul

As if Matt wouldn’t publically post the names and addresses of gay rights activists if it suited him.

    • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

Cue them comparing it (somehow in their twisted little minds) to Alabama and the Ten Commandments atrocity that Roy Moore erected in 3… 2… 1…

      • JWC

        God morning How is Us?

        • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

Us (just me!) is in Santiago! Medical appointment done (still have to wait for the new medication – I should be used to it after seven months) and now I have a day to catch up on sleep and setting up my new laptop!

          How is you, mister?

          • JWC

Doing well Glad all is OK in your world

          • JWC

I know. Old nosey just concerned for your welfare

          • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

I like my JWC checkins! Nothing nosy about them.
Please keep them coming! It’s nice to know that someone is thinking of you.

I am still jealous of your Thanksgiving feast and can’t stop thinking about it!

          • JWC

In Chile what is comparable to a SAFEWAY

          • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

We actually have a chain called Lider, which is owned by WalMart, but doesn’t have nearly the same selection as WalMart in the US. It does carry a bunch of “gringo” products like Sriracha sauce and Kraft Dinner, so we go there for a few home comforts.

The other big chains here are Unimarc, Jumbo, and Santa Isobel. Pretty standard grocery stores.

          • JWC

I ask only cuz living alone I always buy a Butterball freezer to oven turkey 4 hours complete no waste no muss no fuss

          • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

Turkey is not a common thing here, and only comes a couple times a year, usually, for us gringos, at super inflated prices.

On the other hand, we get amazing beef… we could barely afford hamburger meat in Hawaii, but here we could afford to eat fillet all week if we wanted to.

          • JWC

Ya i suppose its all availabilty and local customs we have tons of beef but way to ‘spansive

          • vorpal ๐Ÿ˜ผ

What I REALLY miss is pork. That is my favourite.
No coincidence that hubby and I (jokingly) call each other Pig, Pork Chop, Baron Swine of Mine, Seรฑor Sausage, Luscious Loin, etc.

          • JWC

Love pork chops. loin ,roast In your litany of porcine names you missed Miss Piggy

    • Tawreos

They are already working on a fund raising letter on it I am sure.

  • JoeMyGod

The annual meeting of LGBT journos was held in Orlando this year and we took two buses from the host hotel to pay our respects at Pulse. My mother lives very near the club and she joined us and met everybody.

    • Johnny Wyeknot

I grew up across Lake Lorna on Delaney Avenue. My heart continues to break.

  • skyweaver

    God bless Orlando

  • gaycuckhubby
    • Gustav2

Didn’t they see him palling around with Christianist terrorists?

      • gaycuckhubby

Nope. They saw the rainbow flag and Caitlyn Jenner

      • jerry

If his initial racist rants, or his long history of assholery and business failings didn’t do it, you would think when his campaign went along with the most anti-LGBT platform in the GOP’s history would’ve clued them in.

      • JCF

And naming one as his Veep!

    • Joe in PA

From the article: Chris Barron, a longtime conservative gay-rights activist…

Something is wrong with that statement.

      -or-

“something is not like the other thing”.

      • gaycuckhubby

Calling Baron a gay rights Advocate is just horrible journalism. He wants cisgendered white gay males between the ages of 25 and 55 to get tax breaks he fights for no other member of the community

      • Miji

He can suck as much conservative congressional closetcase dick as he wants, but to call it “activism” is kind of a stretch. Dicks are easy. Until he’s won over some hearts and minds, he’s a useless tool.

      • JCF

Time for this one again! [Made long before Drumpf even announced for Prez]

      Some gays are stupid.

Without smart and stupid we could never determine average.

A WTF were they thinking moment, if ever there was one.

    • Ken M
    • CanuckDon

Oy….I had just assumed that they were beguiled by his disrespect of gays…that in some twisted, self-hating way, that was the draw. Now I’m just totally confused if somehow that spell has been broken. SMGDH

    • Ninja0980

      What a bunch of dumbasses.

    • Tomcat

No shit, why did anyone believe him in the first place. He has history.

      • gaycuckhubby

The question for the whole campaign
        .. wtf were people thinking?

        • Tomcat

It was ALL a giant SICK joke on America for most voters.

          • thatotherjean

            And it backfired, bigly.

        • Jean-Marc in Canada

They were thinking Hillary was worse, that’s what. Sorry to repeat it, but everyone and I mean EVERYONE knew what Trump was like on all the issues, but they still went there. I love my American cousins, I truly do; but I can’t abide the denial regarding Trump.

Note: not angry with you sweets, just frustrated at how all those who supported him and shit on Hillary are all suddenly acting shocked and disappointed. Helen Keller could the Dems were lightyears better, but nooooo, they weren’t pure enough so….ok, I’m done.

    • The_Wretched

Now? It was clear back during the campaign and earlier.

    • Pip

Oh, fuck those people sideways. Fucking sell out assholes. Money above all things. I wish there was a way to take away someone’s gay card…

    • thatotherjean

      What took them so long?

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Fuck’em, may they only know despair and rejection. I hate homocons, always have, always will. I have this thing about collaborators and kapos.

  • gaycuckhubby

Twitter gave an update to Rose McGowan’s suspension. She tweeted out someone else’s personal phone number. Given that new information I don’t have a problem with them temporarily suspending her.

    • ElenorRigby

yeah, I have learned not to go off half-cocked about stories that are too shocking to be true… there’s ALWAYS something.

    • Ninja0980

I get her anger but whipping up a lynch mob against everyone who had a connection to Weinstein..not the way to do it.

  • ElenorRigby

we don’t get workplace protections, they’re trying to invalidate our marriages, we don’t get treated with much respect and we don’t have gun control but hey look… rainbow swag!!

    • djcoastermark

That is why we have to stick together and look out for Us, as a people and community. Lard knows our current repugnicant gubmint will never bring about equality for all.

      • boatboy_srq

        True that.

And that has to happen in meatspace. It won’t happen on Grindr.

  • JoeMyGod

My mother tells me that every time she drives by Pulse, even more than a year later, there’s people there day and night with candles and flowers. A lot of the families of the victims visit on birthdays. ๐Ÿ™

  • JWC

    Yay Team

  • Mike C.

Nice gesture but a colorful crosswalk won’t protect us from Pence and his merry band of fundies who want to make being gay a capital crime. I’ve been watching The Handmaid’s Tale and some days it’s hard to separate fact from fiction. We’re living in dangerous times.

    • JWC

Start the anti Pence scenario now before trump is gone He is not the choice you want either

    • thatotherjean

That’s because it’s not exactly fiction. Margaret Atwood said that she didn’t use any religious activities in the book that hadn’t happened somewhere, at some time in history. It’s downright scary.

  • Tomcat

Has Dick-tator signed a dick-tatoral edict against it yet?

  • Bluto

The usual professional hatemongers will be screaming how we’re cramming our “lifestyle” down their goddamn throats by the end of the day.
& yes, I hate how cynical I’ve become about my goddamn embarrassment of a country.

  • Tomcat

There will probably be a lawsuit filed against it by end of day from the haters.

  • djcoastermark

This weekend is also Orlando’s Pride weekend. It is a big event culminating with fireworks around Lake Eola after the parade, festival, and dance parties. We are going and had planned to stop at Pulse (again) on our way out of town on Sunday. This just gives us more incentive to pay our respects. Thank you city of Orlando for this.

  • June Gordon

Please tell me the prostitute/grifter from “Finding Prince Charming” did not siphon money off this crosswalk, like he did from the one in Atlanta.

  • JAKvirginia

Very nice. But the price to get it was way too high. Just sayin’…

    • Ken M

Whose the gold suited, wanna be a cowboy, on the right?

Ernest Goes To The White House

(Except, no matter what you think of his schtick, the guy who played Ernest was a decent man.)

    • thatotherjean

Considering what Trump was signing, I wish Pence had just let him leave.

  • Professor Barnhardt

I’m waiting for ***** to order Federal Highway Administration inspectors to Orlando to cite the crosswalk as out of compliance with AASHTO standards.

(I don’t know if it’s out of compliance or not.)

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Association_of_State_Highway_and_Transportation_Officials

    • bambinoitaliano

Or some idiots shooting or vandalize the crosswalk by midnight.

  • S. Tyler Hoffman

The crosswalk is nice but we did this in Philly and a few years later it’s distressed and looks terrible. Not vandalized mind you, just worn down. Money would have been better spent elsewhere IMO.

    • Tor

Same here in the Castro in SF. Already looking tired and old.

      • djcoastermark

But there’s the cool looking rainbow lit escalators out of the metro and the rainbow street lighting to go with it. Yeah, all paint gets faded and worn with time, but who says a touch up can’t be done ?

        • Tor

It’s not paint. The stripes are some sort of embedded asphaltic or rubber material.

          • djcoastermark

I suppose to make the stripes last longer ? A little maintenance then either way. Power washing ?

          • Tor

Washing of some sort is the answer, I think. With all the new rainbowing, all that’s missing in the Castro is a rainbow unicorn carousel.
Maintenance? This is San Francisco…. not gonna happen. The BART/MUNI stations look and smell worse than in the third world.

    • Tread

Or, you know, someone could create a fund to repaint the stripes or urge the city to do it? But hey, let’s just fucking chuck it!

      • S. Tyler Hoffman

Why don’t you just calm down. As I stated, it’s my opinion. Take your condescending attitude and go cry about it. Philadelphia’s had many window dressing fixes within the community without addressing actual troubles, hence my perspective.

        • Tread

Listen, buttercup, youโ€™re the one who just launched into histrionics because I suggested instead of complaining about it, you take the lead.

          • S. Tyler Hoffman

I do plenty in my city thanks. I’ve seen your comments, we agree on most topics. And yet you decided to take the passive aggressive route – taking my practical opinion coming at me with condescension and attitude. I can only imagine how terribly you handle yourself with people you don’t agree with. You’re part of the problem. Good day.

          • Tread

You think Iโ€™m coming for you when I express my annoyance at people who just give up and complain about stuff instead of taking charge and trying to fix the issue. THAT is being part of the problem. Your feelings got hurt and thatโ€™s the most important thing to you, when it wasnโ€™t personally directed at you. Have a nice day.

          • S. Tyler Hoffman

You very first comment was meant to make me feel bad and was dripping with a condescending attitude. I really could care less but I made a promise years back that I would challenge such attitudes when I see it. My feelings aren’t hurt, I’m just not going to pretend like I’m the problem for your sake.

          • Tread

No one cast you as a problem. You did that yourself.

  • Stubenville

Well, that’s the least they could do. No, really; how could they have expended any less effort?

  • jmax

Sort-of-on-topic – this is from a couple of weeks ago:
A high school in Marion, Kansas allows students to customize their assigned parking spaces. One student painted a rainbow flag on his spot, and this happened:

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ff67155298fe36472319801361d949242b09f5723db152a3f0fc8f7f38880443.jpg

Vandals poured roofing tar over the space. Fortunately, other students helped the student clean off and restore the flag.

    • thatotherjean

Good for the students! It’s great to see other kids rallying around the guy with the rainbow flag.

      • jmax

At one point the school principal was going to make him remove the flag because of complaints from the community, but students were able to gather over 600 signatures (in a town with a population of 1800) petitioning the principal to allow the flag to stay.

        • djcoastermark

Even better yet. Maybe there is some hope for that part of the country.

  • FelineMama

Kudos to you Orlando. That is beautiful. Too bad it’s a reminder of Ugly.

  • On Off

Your article is very unique and powerful for new reader. Thanks
