Trump Attacks The Free Press: “It Is Frankly Disgusting That The Press Is Able To Write Whatever It Wants To”

The Week reports

President Trump skewered the free press on Wednesday, telling reporters that “it is frankly disgusting that the press is able to write whatever it wants to write.” The comments followed Trump’s tweets Wednesday morning, which reacted to an NBC News story that claimed the president had called for the nuclear arsenal to be increased “tenfold.” “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License?” Trump cryptically asked.

I can’t wait for the gulags!

    • Nowhereman

Me too! And if we’re in more than one despised minority, will we have to wear patches on our clothing for all of them?

      • Gustav2

        That’s how it worked before.

  • Silver Badger

That pesky freedom of speech coupled with freedom of the press makes a dictators life so difficult!

    • The part that worries me is there are those who agree with him…and I fear there could come a day when they finish the coup the Russians started.

    • Nowhereman

It also got him elected since Fox and Breitbart and the like were able to print anything they wanted. Talk about your “fake news”.

    • thrunch

Not a dictator yet … but Hair Drumpf sure wants to be.

    • DonnaLee

I mean how dare these people…going around telling the whole truth instead of MY TRUTH! The nerve of them!

Meanwhile he loved himself all that free press when he was running for office.

  • It’s frankly disgusting to have an unfit, corrupt, would-be-dictator President who so hates America’s freedoms and liberties he’ll publicly disavow his sworn duty to uphold, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.

It’s even more disgusting the Congressional Republican Majority still won’t do anything about their monster.

    • Joe in PA

I think your last sentence upsets me the most. 🙁 And soon, it might be all three branches.

Oh come on. Just wait until today’s press conference. We will all be told he was just joking! It’s funny, see? *ha* *ha* *ha* Wow you people have no sense of humor!

It’s gaslighting. “Who do you trust, me or your own lying eyes?” “He didn’t really say that” or “He didn’t really mean that.”

        • lymis

HA! “Cognitive” and “Trump” in the same paragraph! Hilarious!

    • Todd20036

Meanwhile, Fox “news” actually does write whatever they want to without any factual basis, yet because they like Trump, that’s ok.

      • lymis

Ah, see, there’s where you misunderstand him.

It’s not that FOX gets to write whatever they want because they like Trump.

It’s that he feels FOX gets to write whatever TRUMP wants.

He’ll turn on them in an instant if they ever turn on him.

    • JackFknTwist

      Dear Elizabeth Warren,
Please put down a motion of No Confidence in Trump/turd.
There is no procedural impediment to doing so.
Let’s see who supports it; let’s see if it gets to a vote. Let’s see who obstructs such a motion.
      All Democrats should sign it.
Corker and others should sign it.
Time to get off the fence before the war breaks out.
Where were you before Trump/turd started WWIII ?
That is the question which the future is asking our legislators.
      Thanks,
      Jack.

    • Kruhn

Donnie, may I call you Donnie?

You might want to tattoo this inside your eyelids. “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

In other words, suck it up, buttercup!

    • Paula

And Vlad Putie is creaming his jeans over this tweet.

  • Skokieguy [Larry]

Republicans, what will it take? At this point Trump is trolling his own party, daring them, threatening them, to see how batshit crazy he needs to appear (or be) before enough of them grow a spine and 25th him out of office.

    • TimCA

      “Republicans, what will it take?”

The realization that absolutely every remaining possibility for pushing through a major tax cut for the richest 1% has finally been exhausted.

      • Todd20036

        Being primaried out of office.
All the Nazis care about is their own jobs, and their sponsors.

  • ElenorRigby

far be it from me to point this out… but Trump was elected on “Whatever people want to write.” So if he wants to make it illegal to write intentionally false news stories… I’m just fine with that.

    • You’re taking him literally. You and I and everyone here knows his definition of ‘fake news’ is anything written or said that is critical of him. ANYTHING.

      • ElenorRigby

*I* know that but I’m not sure HE does.

        • Probably doesn’t. He does seem to lack any self-awareness.

          • MT YVR

Sentience involves self awareness. I’m not sure he could pass a Turing test, frankly. It’s a mass of muscle flinch responses and random gaseous noises. I’m not sure there’s a central nervous system there.

Basically it’s a fecal pile that somehow has developed locomotion. And that locomotion is being mistaken as intent and awareness.

    • Nowhereman

I’d be fine if they reinstated the Fairness Doctrine. Doing away with it gave rise to Fox and Limbaugh and all the rest.

      • (((GC)))

…and gave rise to news divisions being subordinated to entertainment.

  • crewman

Over in Russia they just got rid of the free press altogether, and you never hear any complaints from them.

  • safari

He looks at the dictators and wants to be one.

  • Tatonka

Jesus tapdancing christ. What part of “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech,” do you not understand, you wannabe tin-pot dictator? Go fun for president of Russia of you don’t like the Bill of Rights, Shit for Brains.

    • Gustav2

but…but…but he is not “Congress” and can sign an EO! /s

    • Tawreos

None of those words are Trump, so why would he waste time reading them?

    • Answer to your question is “all of it.”

His pathological narcissism is out of control. Every single public criticism of him is deeply wounding to his fragile ego. He has no inner capacity to just say, “That’s simply not true”—and let it go. He requires constant outside affirmation and that makes him uniquely vulnerable in a psychological sense to any negative input. Because he takes it all in. Because inside, he is empty, a hollow shell, and when he looks in the mirror, he sees nothing.

The only things stopping him right now from being the fascist authoritarian dictator he craves to be—like Un and Putin and Erdogan—are his own incompetence, laziness, ignorance, and the fact the U.S. isn’t structurally designed to be easily converted into a fascist regime.

      • Side note: His ridiculously high need for approval also makes him uniquely vulnerable to extreme flattery. Which foreign governments are already using to their own benefit. Butter him up, get whatever you want.

This makes him a constant threat to the security of this country.

      • RoFaWh

I am constantly reminded of Keith Olberman’s analysis of Trump as living inside a self-constructed cocoon that has for decades efficiently kept unpleasant news away from its owner.

Now, as President, his cocoon no longer works very well and every day (I’ll bet) he’s confronted with news that he formerly would have been blissfully ignorant of. He does not like this!

  • MikeBx2
    • Distingué Traces

You think they’re any more amused than we are? I mean, this is the result of their failures — they must know that.

      • MikeBx2

Oh, Jesus. Why did you pick me to troll? I think they’d be amused at him being frustrated by the very press that reported on things like birth certificates and emails. Now, go away.

        • Distingué Traces

          You see him as “frustrated”?

The President of the United States is openly, publicly attacking one of the foundational principles of American politics.

Treating Trump as a hapless buffoon should have stopped long before the election. And anyone who is still doing it since the election is minimizing — and so enabling — the real harm being done to our institutions. The buffoon is holding a nuclear arsenal. It isn’t fucking funny.

Obama and Clinton showed themselves to be partly blind to the danger Trump posed, but I don’t think either of them is stupid enough to chuckle over this horror.

  • JWC

Its Disgusting that they do print your crap and expose it for the lies that it is Remember Donny, back a few months ago, when they all pandered to you and spread your lies willingly. No one fact checked ,it was all a race for the headlines Each had to be the first the print the words of the Mighty Exalted. Ya,, Make America Great Again

  • ben-andy

Odd how he claims they do just what he claims he doesn’t do. Then they write that he DOES do those things and then he escalates. And pulling their license is certainly the “nuclear option” in his war w/ NBCorea. Repeatedly putting out stories about him is their big stick. Can’t wait for the one about his being removed from office and Ken Burns’ 20 hour documentary on the whole sorry debacle.

  • Ninja0980

Will they talk about this or will they continue to whine about Hillary and the Obamas not making a statement fast enough about Weinstein?

  • Gustav2

“They should just repeat the propaganda we give them, right Kellyanne?”

  • JW Swift

It is frankly disgusting that the person elected to be leader of the free world is able to lie to the American people whenever he wants to.

  • Tatonka

It’s frankly disgusting to me that Trump can’t move his pudgy little thumbs without lying or disgracing America.

  • shellback

My congresscritters have been hearing more from me this year than in all the decades before.

      • (((GC)))

In February, the staffer I spoke to at my Republican senator’s office was audibly rattled, though he said he’d pass it along, when I asked how the senator plans to fight the steady stream of lies coming from the White House.

We should all ask our legislators that!

        • TimCA

My congresscretin’s office (Darrel Issa) won’t even respond to my email questions anymore. Gawd, I’ll be so happy when we move into active campaign season and I can start volunteering to finally (hopefully) help throw that POS out of Congress.

          • (((GC)))

If you can, call them on the phone. Members of Congress will notice if a lot of their staff’s time gets taken up by the public calling about a particular issue.

          • TimCA

I actually drop by one of his district offices every time I’m nearby to ask about the status of my (never forthcoming) replies. 😉

          • Strepsi

Oh Jesus, you have Darrel Issa? He comes across stupider than Louis Gohmert and more racist than Steve King and more crazy than Michele Bachmann — and that’s HARD!

    • Either a flat-out lie or attempting to parse Donald’s idle and ignorant question “Why can’t we double or triple our nuclear weapons? How about 10 times?”

Technically not “calling for an increase” but making it clear that’s what he’d like to have happen. Because I have no doubt anymore he desperately wants to be the 2nd US President to use nuclear weapons.

Upper government jobs can pay pretty good money and the benefits are second to none. If one doesn’t have a job to go to immediately after the resignation is posted, one takes a deep breath, swallows hard, holds one’s nose, and do what is asked. This time.

IF the system still works, IF it’s still honest, they WILL be punished.

This is just one reason it’s so vitally important to keep Trump’s judicial nominees–dishonest, far-right fanatics all–OFF the courts. Moderates ONLY should be appointed.

I will repeat for the hundredth time–to, I’m sure, everyone’s delight–the 3 things that, at a bare minimum, massive and relentless protests should be DEMANDING:

The Defiler’s tax returns and other financial records

Secure elections (paper ballots or trails for every vote cast, an END to voter suppression, to computer tampering with registration rolls)

Moderates only appointed to the courts (the appointment of fanatics will consolidate the fascists’ power and deal a deadly blow to the Republic’s chances of survival)

Several months ago, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversation, former chief strategist Steve Bannon told Trump that the risk to his presidency wasn’t impeachment, but the 25th Amendment—the provision by which a majority of the Cabinet can vote to remove the president. When Bannon mentioned the 25th Amendment, Trump said, “What’s that?” According to a source, Bannon has told people he thinks Trump has only a 30 percent chance of making it the full term.

I don’t think Reagan repealed the Fairness Act. It was killed in a lower court case by two activist judges, both of whom Reagan later rewarded with Supreme Court nominations.

That’s right, the hit job on our national discourse came from none other than Antonin fucking Scalia.

Trump Seen as ‘Unstable’ and ‘Unraveling’

Several people close to President Trump have told Gabriel Sherman that the president is “unstable,” “losing a step,” and “unraveling.”

“The conversation among some of the president’s longtime confidantes, along with the character of some of the leaks emerging from the White House has shifted. There’s a new level of concern.”

“In recent days, I spoke with a half dozen prominent Republicans and Trump advisers, and they all describe a White House in crisis as advisers struggle to contain a president who seems to be increasingly unfocused and consumed by dark moods. Trump’s ire is being fueled by his stalled legislative agenda and, to a surprising degree, by his decision last month to back the losing candidate Luther Strange in the Alabama Republican primary.”

Said one person: “Alabama was a huge blow to his psyche. He saw the cult of personality was broken.”

    https://politicalwire.com/2017/10/11/trump-seen-unstable-unraveling/

Any of these things should have made him unelectable in a civilized country with fair elections.

        • olandp

He didn’t sell, he put it in a blind trust, a truly blind trust. It was so mismanaged that he was $1,000,000 in debt when he left the Whitehouse. Instead of declaring bankruptcy he worked to pay off the debt and secure his future. A turly admirable man.

  • Ninja0980

Let us not forget Republicans still won’t do a damn thing to stop him.
They are the real monsters in this.

    • Correct. For now. The day when they truly believe he threatens their jobs & power, they will act. But at present they don’t think so. Could be true, could be denial.

      But eventually…

      • greenmanTN

I was reading an article about Corker earlier and it stated that other Republican lawmakers were saying privately what he is saying publicly, but “understandably” weren’t saying it publicly because it might harm their chances of reelection.

NO THAT IS NOT “UNDERSTANDABLE,” IT’S ABDICATING THE RESPONSIBILITIES YOU WERE ELECTED TO PERFORM!

    • I concur on both counts. Only trouble is that with a pathological malignant narcissist, when they blow, it’s everyone around them who is targeted. They seek to destroy and inflict the maximum damage possible in the annihilation phase of the usual cycle.

When it’s a marriage, the narcissist will do shit like set the house on fire or destroy things of value to his victims.

Here, it’s the President of the United States and he has nuclear weapons. Unless he’s stopped.

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2017/10/donald-trump-is-unraveling-white-house-advisers

(I’m aware schadenfreude is itself a German word…this is bigger.)

    • Some bits are posted below by various folks, but here’s a couple more that convey just how far gone Donald appears to be:

According to two sources familiar with the conversation, Trump vented to his longtime security chief, Keith Schiller, “I hate everyone in the White House! There are a few exceptions, but I hate them!” (A White House official denies this.) Two senior Republican officials said Chief of Staff John Kelly is miserable in his job and is remaining out of a sense of duty to keep Trump from making some sort of disastrous decision.
      (…)
While Kelly can’t control Trump’s tweets, he is doing his best to physically sequester the president—much to Trump’s frustration. One major G.O.P. donor told me access to Trump has been cut off, and his outside calls to the White House switchboard aren’t put through to the Oval Office. Earlier this week, I reported on Kelly’s plans to prevent Trump from mingling with guests at Mar-a-Lago later this month. And, according to two sources, Keith Schiller quit last month after Kelly told Schiller he needed permission to speak to the president and wanted written reports of their conversations.

Girls will be allowed to join the Cub Scouts in 2018, and the program for Eagle Scouts is projected to begin in 2019, according to the release. Cub Scout dens will each remain single-gender, either all-girls or all-boys.

Yeah. She has said they are no longer friends because he didn’t support her during the beheading picture tempest.

          • billbear1961

I don’t blame her, at all!

    • Treant

      Eh.

Who’s on the other channels? I demand Kathy Griffin back. She’s a blip when you’re on your sixth glass of wine and fifth man.

      • safari

Don Lemon wasn’t bad last year. He got really drunk and his co-host for his segments had to convince him not to get a tattoo.

        • Treant

Now that sounds cool! Plus he’s easy on the eyes.

          • Lazycrockett

For bout 4 minutes then it was a mess. A big ol Mess.

        • Lazycrockett

Year before that he got in a hot tub. I enjoyed it when it was more low key and C anchors did it. Did they even do the shoe drop in the Keys this year?

          • safari

I honestly have no idea what that even means.

          • Lazycrockett

In the keys they have a drag queen who gets in to a giant fake shoe and they lower her from a balcony.

          • safari

            As it should be.

Hmm… I wanna say yay, but… hmm. Oh wait, I never watch anyway, so ok YAY!

Not fair, Kathy was joking TOO.

    • worstcultever

Kathy should stream her own NYE show

      • Lazycrockett

        I would watch.

It gets worse. Trump will speak at the Values Voters Summit in Washington, DC on Friday. And they are as virulently anti-gay as they get. Oh, joy. Oh, rapture.

    In time for Halloween!

It’s the greatest pumpkin, unbelievable, Greater than Kimchee Un!

The country needs to start a great ORANGE pumpkin contest.
Must have Trump hair only rule.

    • AJ Drew

Trump as pumpkin seems somehow reductive, though I still appreciate the “puking pumpkin” theme.

      • Tomcat

I saw that, going to make one and put his hair on it.

      • Halou

The Jones Act waiver for Puerto Rico has quietly expired too. Even though the waivers for Texas and Florida were extended to account for the sheer scale and spread of damage. “Fuck Puerto Rico” seems to be the official policy.

Man that sure is WHITE of you.

They are not stupid. They are evil.

  • Lazycrockett
    • Tomcat

Oh yeah the great part time Democrat.

    • Treant

That was fairly obvious when you saw the list of what the Sanders staffer “accidentally-on-purpose” looked at. It was exactly what a data thief would want to look at.

So, now those staffers need to be indicted. I believe that data theft is illegal. I also note that voter files are confidential.

    • The_Wretched

The link is to a 2015 story. And if you actually read it, you’d see the DNC blocked Sanders’ access to his own data. The Sanders team then showed that the data was not only blocked but that the Clinton people had access to it. There is nothing in that story that shows the Sanders team gave it to the Russians.

But don’t let a little thing like facts get in the way of your hate/smear agenda.

I’m sure the Russians find your biased infighting attacks to be humourous and a sign that they did their job.

      • Tomcat

Here IS a fact. Bernie is not then, now or ever planned to be a DEMOCRAT.

        • The_Wretched

and? The Dems made him a deal, we’ll let you run in the party in exchange for abiding by the process result. I’m not a fvcking democrat either. Spineless bastards can’t stand up even with Trump in the WH.

And before you make the next obvious smear-trope, I voted hillary and it was an easy choice. That doesn’t mean I like the Dems nor where they are going (which seems to be not too much more than sittign there like a puddle).

          • Tread

Yeah, he sure abided by the result. By tearing it down from the inside and helping give us Trump. Thanks a fucking lot, Bernie.

          • The_Wretched

keep beating the dead horse, i’m sure it helps somehow.

          • JAKvirginia

Politics is deal making. Then, now, always.

        • ultragreen

Tomcat, 45% of the voters in the Democrat party voted for Sanders, and they were under-represented in the primaries because older voters (more likely to be Clinton supporters) are more likely to vote in primaries than younger voters (more likely to be Sanders supporters). Sanders is closer to being a true Democrat than Hillary Clinton ever was.

          • canoebum

Yet, for some reason he doesn’t want to be a member of the Democratic Party. The biggest mistake the Democrats made was to allow him to run in their primary without first joining the party. Apparently, your idea of what “a true democrat” is and that of actual Democrats differs to a significant degree.

    • Ninja0980

Another reason why he’s a POS too.

  • Lazycrockett
  • David in Tucson

Why are he and his goons still in office?

    • billbear1961

A failure of NERVE on the part of the Republic’s weak-kneed “defenders.”

And because the gangster oligarchs will be pissed if their coup is interfered with.

    • ChrisInKansas

As long as the Republicans get what they want, why would they bother? Now if Trump starts working more with the Dems, THEN maybe we’d see some nervous chatter.

      • Tomcat

He pretended to and we did see nervous chatter. You are right.

  • Friday

This from the guy that gets angry if the press doesn’t lie or omit facts in his favor, or if anyone mentions Fox, Breitbart, and Infowars are the propaganda bullshit they are.

  • ChrisInKansas

“…and people should look into it.”

I WISH people would look into what the press is writing. The deplorable kind of people.

    • Tomcat

Put it in my trash file and I will get around to it in time.

  • Well, FNC, WND, Breitbart, Info Wars are all prime examples of media that are as afraid of the truth as Trump is.

  • Daveed_WOW

Notice that he’s asserting that the media makes things up. Sneaky language. Red meat for his base of the below average.

    • RoFaWh

      Pure projection.

We’ve seen this kind of thing before; Trump has a tantrum about something, later it turns out that he’s the worst offender vis a vis whatever he’s bitching and moaning about this time.

      • Tread

May the power of 25 compel him.

    • JAKvirginia

Makes things up. But they’re allowed to. First Amendment is a bitch, eh Donnie?

Which probably has a better understanding of the First Amendment — the freedom of the press part, the unfake freedom of religion part, the right to petition part, and/or the peaceably assemble part? This one-ton prize-winning pumpkin or the half-baked half-wit pumpkin taking up air in the White House?

    • JAKvirginia

How did you get a pic of Trump’s ass bending over?

  • Girlgoon

It is frankly disgusting that the white house produces fake news of it own.

  • JoyZeeBoy

It’s disgusting that this shit-for-brains got elected.

    • RoFaWh

And if you looked into it, you’d discover that shit-for-brains has, in fact, no brains at all, just a vast emptiness.

The POTUS is suppose to be the protector of our precious constitutional freedoms and instead the fat self centered narcissist, thinks being POTUS is all about him and the asswipe rants to be the destroyer of our freedoms.
Why won’t congress just step up and impeach Trump as a mistake, so we can all just move on?

  • JAKvirginia

Said the man who liked the National Enquirer.
    Too funny.

  • Vista-Cruiser

Yes this is horrible. But it’s also a direct and foreseeable result of Democratic-leaning Americans no longer bothering to vote in elections.

    • Ross

Ahhh, more like Russia likely stealing the vote for Donnie.

  • DaveMiller135

No, it’s not. It’s a Constitutional protection against, well, you.

I used to think that all dictators had to come in with a plan for global domination. Like SMERSH. Or Madonna. Now, I’m wondering if it’s enough to just be popular at the polling place, or with the military, and stupid. It’s clear to me that the Founding Fathers didn’t worry enough about the rise of the incredibly stupid narcissist. Not that I blame them, I was absolutely certain that common sense and decency would allow Trump no closer to the White House than Manhattan. Score 1 for Not Me.

    • canoebum

They lived in The Age of Enlightenment. How could they be expected to know the voters would return us to The Dark Ages?

  • Halou

The full extent of the US Constitution as known and understood by the GOP:

    “….The right to bear arms….”

    And… That’s about it.

  • CraigNJ

This coming from the “man” that brought us birtherism.

  • Eddie Besketti

It’s frankly disgusting to have his diarrhea mouth running all the time, saying whatever he wants to.

  • Daniel E. Duclo

What is scary is that he is almost play by play following the plan of Hitler and nobody is doing anything to stop it. Congress is the only way to stop him (less a bullet) and yet they do nothing. It outright un-American to speak against the constitution the way he does. He will attempt to have the press state controlled, then start WWIII.

  • Kissmagrits

    Yes, Donald.
The press writes or says whatever it wants to because that’s what it means to be free. If the spoken or written press steps outside the prescribed limits, there are other remedies…. so sit the fuck down and shut up, you fucking moron.

  • “it is frankly disgusting that Trumpelthinskin is able to write whatever it wants to write”

There… fixed it. Yes, I left the “it” intentionally. You’re welcome.

  • Ann Kah

Would somebody in the White House please READ the first amendment to Trump!?
