REPORT: Steve Bannon Gave Trump 30% Chance Of Full Term, Warned Of Removal Via The 25th Amendment

Vanity Fair reports:

At first it sounded like hyperbole, the escalation of a Twitter war. But now it’s clear that Bob Corker’s remarkable New York Times interview—in which the Republican senator described the White House as “adult day care” and warned Trump could start World War III—was an inflection point in the Trump presidency.

It brought into the open what several people close to the president have recently told me in private: that Trump is “unstable,” “losing a step,” and “unraveling.”

Even before Corker’s remarks, some West Wing advisers were worried that Trump’s behavior could cause the Cabinet to take extraordinary Constitutional measures to remove him from office.

Several months ago, according to two sources with knowledge of the conversation, former chief strategist Steve Bannon told Trump that the risk to his presidency wasn’t impeachment, but the 25th Amendment—the provision by which a majority of the Cabinet can vote to remove the president.

When Bannon mentioned the 25th Amendment, Trump said, “What’s that?” According to a source, Bannon has told people he thinks Trump has only a 30 percent chance of making it the full term.

  • j.martindale

Or the country could go up in flames, whichever comes first.

    • Frostbite

      don’t you meant glow up?

      • Todd20036

        Certainly not grow up.

  • Lazycrockett

If Pence promises minimal cabinet changes, they may go along with it. Gonna be tricky not getting a stooge to go to drumpf and telling him whats up.

    • Westcoast88

However, the thought of the most antigay governor in the country becoming President makes me sick to my stomach. I guess there are no other options.

      • Lazycrockett

I firmly believe that if impeachment or the 25th was invoked it would leave the rest of the administration so neutered nothing would be done till the next election.

      • pj

pence will be in a box if he takes over. there is no way he would win his own term as president so the best he could hope for is to be a seat warmer until the next election. theres also a good chance he will find himself in prison.

The Gerald Ford School of Presidenting.

    • DreadPikathulhu

The problem with this scenario is even if Pence and the cabinet declare Trump unfit, they still have to get a 2/3 majority of both the House and Senate to remove Trump from office. If they can’t get the vote then Trump will resume the power of the office and be totally unleashed.

      Section 4:
Whenever the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive departments or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall immediately assume the powers and duties of the office as Acting President.

Thereafter, when the President transmits to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives his written declaration that no inability exists, he shall resume the powers and duties of his office unless the Vice President and a majority of either the principal officers of the executive department or of such other body as Congress may by law provide, transmit within four days to the President pro tempore of the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives their written declaration that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office. Thereupon Congress shall decide the issue, assembling within forty-eight hours for that purpose if not in session. If the Congress, within twenty-one days after receipt of the latter written declaration, or, if Congress is not in session, within twenty-one days after Congress is required to assemble, determines by two-thirds vote of both Houses that the President is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office, the Vice President shall continue to discharge the same as Acting President; otherwise, the President shall resume the powers and duties of his office.

The fact that they are even DISCUSSING the possibility is staggering. They are talking about a military coup! I’m beginning to view them as self sacrificing baby sitters. Sacrificing their careers for the sake of their country. This sort of move would have to be done with the cooperation of the Secret Service. Given their backgrounds they would also have the backing of the military.

          • Todd20036

At this point, I’m ok with a military coup.

            No exaggeration, either.

    • DreadPikathulhu

Nah. The media already has their script in hand for the “GOP Resurgent” stories they’ll be writing a year after DJT leaves office in disgrace.

      • liondon#iamnotatraitor

They’re still working on the pivot stories.

“After its trial by fire, a stronger, smarter GOP rises from the ashes”

        • thatotherjean

One can only hope that’s true, because we need two parties in a two-party system, and the present GOP is a bunch of right-wing idiots. If they’re just smarter, but not wiser, there would be trouble, though. It would be better if we could take at least one of the houses of Congress away from them before Trump is out of the White House.

      • Rambie

Of course they are, they have their ratings to consider!

    • ElenorRigby

It won’t. his followers still think he’s going to bring back the coal jobs and factory jobs and build a wall. Republicans are THAT stupid.

Yeah but Trump only thinks there are two amendments and he’s a bit iffy on the first one.

    • Tawreos

He only knows the 2nd one and guesses there is a first one to come before the 2nd one

    • LeeCMH

I had to stop reading and laugh out loud when I read Trump’s reply to Bannon’s 25th amendment suggestion.

      “What’s that?”

He’s the president and doesn’t even know our constitution.

A constitutional crisis is brewing. If Trump is so unstable that the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State and the White House Chief of Staff are running the show, a coup d’etat is underway. Keeping a mentally ill man in office simply to use the ink in his pen cannot possibly be constitutional.

    • Tawreos

      It has been done before.

      • j.martindale

Yes, Wilson. However, he wasn’t a danger to the nation. He was simply a placeholder. (Not mentally ill, but incapacitated.)

        • Harveyrabbit

          And Reagan.

          • Tawreos

I have never heard any proof that Reagan was treated similarly to Wilson, but given the timing of the announcement after he left office I guess it could be possible.

          • Harveyrabbit
          • greenmanTN

Reagan’s Alzheimer’s was in full flower his 2nd term. He pretty much stayed in the Presidential residence and watched old movies according to many accounts.

          • LeeCMH

Sure, read the account of the Reykjavík Summit. Reagan’s staff did their best to get Reagan — who was losing it — from making a fool of himself.

          • jerry

There were a couple videos that have leaked that showed Donald Regan ordering Reagan around like a child. Of course, there was also all of Nancy’s constant prompting whenever he made a public appearance.

The link Joe provides also takes you to a recent and downright compelling interview with an interviewer whose name I forget, Preet Bharara, and Sally Yates. It starts with them reflecting on how they were fired, why they were fired, and how they see it now. But then it goes into the rule of law in the age of 45. I recommend it highly. Yes. 40 minutes…they go by like 20. Articulate, thoughtful, insightful and, at times, funny. It’s about halfway down the article at the Vanity Fair link.

I’ve said several times that I don’t understand Steve Bannon’s end game. I get that he hates globalization. I get that he wants us to be isolationist. I get that he loves some obscure Italian philosopher who was a prominent fascist in the 20th century. And I know he doesn’t like Jews and likes to use and/or hang around white supremacists. But all this to what end? He probably knew before the primaries ended that Cheetolini had a good chance of flaming out before his first term, so why did he support him? Clearly, a convenient means to an end, but…there’s that nagging question again.

All I can I see is, “Generate chaos by spooking the masses, then Steve gets to ‘win,’ stay relevant/famous, and make a personal profit.” In some of the Breitbart correspondence that was leaked recently, he kept referring to “winning the war” and “being known as a hero for generations to come.” It sounded like either a bad movie or the wet dream of a 13 year-old boy. And we’re all stuck in the dream/nightmare.

    • JWC

you are probably right on most of it but I think Bannon used trump for his own benefit

      • Gerry Fisher

I hear ya. I’m just playing it out in my head: So, we become isolationist, we undermine NATO, we put the world at risk for nuclear war, we get a bunch of activist judges appointed, we appoint a bunch of people who will wreck the federal departments to which they were assigned, and we sew racial strife and division within the country. And Steve gets to amidst all this crap. Yay?! I guess he imagines making boatloads of money (he probably has already), buying a house that’s gated and away from human beings, having an unlimited supply of gin or whiskey, and feeling as if he “beat the libtards!” and “won!”

Is that all there is? Probably. [sigh]

Bannon was reported to want the corp tax rate increased to 40%. He constantly rails against the fat cats of wall street, he used to be one.

There was an article, I think in the National Review, where they lamented how Bannon’s views were anti-conservative. Supposedly Bannon has no problem with social programs that help “Americans”….so where did any of that go? It’s all just talk…now he wants to destroy the GOP out of revenge, installing his preferred candidates who are even more extreme in their conservative views….again, how does all that compute?

I don’t think there’s any overarching philosophy at work, it’s chaos for the sake of chaos. He’s an intensely bitter vengeful character and doesn’t care the costs.

          Just an opinion…

          • pch1013

He is the id of privileged straight white male America.

          • Bad Tom

He doesn’t even have good survival instincts.

          • Cuberly Deux

There’s that overarching Breitbart meme, white men being persecuted. They can no longer be regarded as heads of their households, they’ve been emasculated. The patriarchy tantrums. Alas, every one of Bannon’s 3 marriages ended VERY bitterly.

Id, yep, but also a sense of lashing out, revenge. Sure seems like they’re their own worst enemies.

          • Randy503

I think there probably WAS some plan early on, and that plan was to “destroy the system.” Actually, we DO need to destroy it — destroy Wall Streets rent-seeking, all the corporations that lobby for tax deceases to fill their coffers and prevent and real competition, destroy the monopolies we have (even in technology, like Apple, Google, Microsoft, etc). Our nation has become a land where the rich never fail, the poor never get a break, and the middle class is stagnant.

So that I get. But you can’t just take a baseball bat to it all and somehow hope that the results will be better. You have to dismantle this stuff carefully or else you just make is worse.

And I think at this point, he is just an angry man who wants to destroy the GOP totally and then on the US, and he’ll be seen as the savior of all. Messianic complex to the moon!

          • Cuberly Deux

I post this video because I find it informative. This is where we are.

Is it all a spit spot “revolution”? Or is it a long slooooow soul grinding bone crushing haul to make things right?

      • Gerry Fisher

I hear you. It’s just that he got to play puppet master to a president who was doomed to fail early and spectacularly. For most folks, this would be unappealing, but I think Bannon thrives on the creation of chaos.

        • pch1013

Yes, I believe his entire political philosophy boils down to: “Burn it down!”

He seems never to have devoted any thought to what happens afterwards.

Bannon is a dominionist. He wants the federal government to literally collapse and then a christian theocracy to be implemented. His goal is destruction of the federal Constitution. He hasn’t been coy about all this.

    • Gerry Fisher

I forgot where I read this, but one of the conservative leaders (Coulter?) said that, in response to the push back they got from college professors and administrators and liberal fellow students put them into a perennial defensive position, and it hurt their fee-wings. So, as a response, they started “sticking it to the liberal powers that be” back on school, and then they kept on going and going and going.

“You hurt me, so I’m gonna hurt you back.” A giant revenge fantasy and a big “FU!” to the libtards.

    • thatotherjean

I’m inclined to think that he doesn’t really have a goal larger than stirring shit up, creating the kind of chaos that allows people like him to thrive, and becoming famous. Maybe he’d be a hero to the alt-right, but that’s a pretty pathetic goal.

    • Oh, Parker

It’s not the masses he’s spooking, it’s the tiny percentage of old white people who no longer recognize the ‘Murica they are living in and are deeply afraid that the pure, pristine 1950s ‘Murica in which all those pesky minorities knew their place and stayed in it will never come back. He knows they aren’t really enough in population to overthrow the government, but they don’t. Otherwise they wouldn’t need gerrymandering, bot farms, fake accounts on social media, photoshopping their crowd sizes and Russian interference to win elections. But there are enough of them that he can scare and manipulate a good personal income out of. That’s all he really wants.

    • Bad Tom

      What was Rasputin’s end game?

Mueller I totally trust – it’s this crazed, nothing-matters world that scares me. • AJ Drew

Mueller’s a prosecutor, and prosecutors tend to be pretty goal-focused, so the “big picture” (line of succession to POTUS, etc) wouldn’t be on the radar, UNLESS taking down all those other folks would help his primary case, and c’mon, it sure seems like it would, and with what limited info we have, seems to be what he’s doing. I hope.

    • AJ Drew

And Pence might be worse, truly. We’ll know what to expect, could (and should) know how to fight against that, but Bill, my recent precinct’s abysmal voter turnout makes me wonder, and truly afraid about whether or not there’d actually be a fight or not. • The_Wretched

Pence cant even get trump’s 30% and he’s also under a cloud from Mueller. The mess and process of trump’s removal costs the republican agenda 6months at least and helps the Dems at midterms. It’s a good roll of the dice.

Myrbetriq gave me kidney pains, but the oxybutynin doesn’t. And at 1/200th the price, although the pharmacy plan later lowered the price of the Myrbetriq.

The Beta Sitosterol is Saw Palmetto extract, which I take at twice the Mfr’s Dosage, due to my size.

The oxybutynin took care of the bed-wetting problem, while the sitosterol cut the nighttime frequency. Neither do much for my daytime frequency; my bladder capacity at night is easily 3 times that of during the day.

There’s the big factor that Pence can use Trump’s bluster and madness for cover and avoid blame for what he does, so the sooner that’s in the open, the better. Hopefully he goes down in the criminal investigations too, but even so. He may come off saner, Dominionism aside, but his track record of actually getting away with things is not so impressive. If you look at when he’s the one in the governor’s chair, for instance.

    • Steven B

About Bannon’s Remark, I’d say there’s a 100% chance he won’t finish his term. I’ll say a 30% chance that the removal will be via the 25th Ammendment and a 70% chance that it’ll be related to the Russia investigation. (My 2 cents)

    • Friday

Frankly, any loyal citizen of America, or Planet Earth, for that matter, probably ought to do that, against the rules or not. Frankly, Drumph’s already fucked up the use of our nuclear deterrent because no one in their right mind would ever trust him to use the things. • Texpat

I’d rather work out my issues with your dad. I hear he’s a good lay

    • matrem

Did you follow Joe here, anti Semitic and homophobic troll that had their old account shut down by disqus?

      • Typical_Liberal

Homophobia isn’t real, and where did you get anti semitic? You are the only Nazi

        • matrem

If homophobia isn’t real, why are you deathly afraid of your hunger for cock? Why else would you frequent and comment on an LGBT site?

    • Jmdintpa

tired old aids jokes… got any dick sucking faggot jokes to go with it.. is that all you got????

    • Treant

At least do try to be creative. We respect a good, “gayer than a treeful of monkeys on nitrous oxide,” but incorrect capitalization and jokes that were old in 1985? Bitch, please, that shit just gets your dumb ass blocked.

  • Leo

You know Joe’s made it when he attracts trolls that don’t even try anymore.

I apologize for the association between something as wonderful as a jockstrap and Cheetolini.

The 25th is the absolute LAST method whereby the POTUS will ever be removed. Look at the first requirement for a 25th style removal:

The VP, the majority of the executives, OR Congress must declare the POTUS unfit.

There is exactly zero evidence that those peeps will be doing so. The POTUS, his henchmen (his exec branch cronies) and 99% of the GOP controlled Congress all share the exact same base.

Name one good reason why any of those people would turn against the base and try to throw out the POTUS. We all know for a fact that all of them would rather see the US and the entire world burn to the ground in a nuclear ash cloud rather than relinquish control.

When it comes to saving their own asses. Their funding is threatened, notably because they have not delivered the tax cuts for the wealthy either via looting health care or ‘Tax reform’ or any other such thing. And there’s of course the *crimes.*

    • One good reason is if Donald announces he’s going to do a nuclear first strike against Pyongyang.

One good reason is if they get word Donald is wondering whether he could arrest Congress for refusing to obey him, since he has zero respect for any other legal or Constitutional limits on his power and appears to be ignorant there actually are any.

One good reason is if Donald’s approval ratings drop below 30% and his support in the GOP continues to erode.

One good reason is when GOP funders decide they’ve had enough of the madman’s chaos because he can’t deliver on anything they want.

One good reason is if Republicans finally realize their jobs, power, and money are all at risk because they didn’t just bite the bullet and put Pence, Ryan, or Hatch in the Oval Office as has been their option all along.

      • Jmdintpa

All good reasons but have you seen the GOP? They are afraid of him. Im pretty sure the dumbass aint going nowhere soon.

      • sandollar_man

Another reason might be that his ego is revenge driven, and that he will use the incredible surveillance apparatus we’ve amassed to attempt to topple those in his own party who won’t go along with his dictatorial reprobate madness.
As he digs up dirt and exposes his own party members, it might prompt the others to remove him to save themselves.

        • grada3784

i’ve been reading a lot about Richard II lately. It could easily apply just as much to Trump.

    Bannon is an optimist.

  • netxtown

If they 25 the turdly 45…what happens to Pence?
Can a 25 be followed with a mandatory new election? Or does that take an actual military coup?

    • Friday

Way I see it, he’ll have to act openly if he dares cause he won’t have Drumph for cover, and he’s bad at covering for himself. There’ll still be the Senate and criminal questions.

      • netxtown

If a military coup allows them to clean house – then do it.

        • Friday

That does get pretty questionable when it comes to contesting whole elections, but there’s a clear-and-present danger factor with Drumph melting down.

        • grada3784

we don’t want to open that can of worms.

    • grada3784

Pence would take over. No provision for anything else.

  • Fritz Keppler

Just like Hitler predicted the Normandy invasion site. Of course, he also from time to time predicted the entire Atlantic coast from the Bay of Biscay to the top of the North Sea, but he officially allowed people only to remember the Normandy site. And only after it happened, naturally.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

I don’t want to see Trump removed because he’s unfit solely because I think his defense attorneys could use that as a defense against collusion. That he was mentally unable to understand what was going on. I’m still happy to see him gone, but it needs to be complete. The 45 administration has to be wiped out of D.C.

    • Friday

The rest of the Republicans can’t plead insanity. It’s going to take time. There’s no reason more of that time needs to involve Drumph’s madness covering for their malice and treason.

    • Ann Kah

I want to see him removed, but what can we do about the Pence creature?

      • -M-
