DNC Slams Trump/Pence On National Coming Out Day: We’ll Fight Their Anti-LGBT Actions “Tooth And Nail”

Via press release from the Democratic National Committee:

“Today, on National Coming Out Day, we celebrate the fact that love is love and are resolute in our belief that all people deserve to be treated with dignity. We remember a time not long ago when living openly as a member of the LGBTQ community was nearly impossible. And we honor those who have fought and struggled to advance the cause of true equality. Even more importantly, we welcome and embrace those who are openly LGBTQ, those who choose to come out today, and those who are still unable to live openly.

“Unfortunately, this year’s celebration is clouded by a presidency that is openly hostile to LGBTQ people. Donald Trump, Mike Pence, and their administration began attacking the LGBTQ community on their first day in office. They retracted the Department of Education’s guidance on transgender students, abandoned America’s global leadership role on LGBTQ rights, proposed cuts to HIV/AIDS testing and care, and just last week reinterpreted the law to give businesses a license to discriminate.

“Democrats are committed to fighting this administration’s anti-LGBTQ actions tooth and nail. We will redouble our efforts to protect the progress we’ve made. And we wish all Americans a happy Coming Out Day.”

This is also just in:

Today is National Coming Out Day, and to commemorate the annual celebration, New York-based advertising agency Grey teamed with VideoOut to record and release a new, special compilation film highlighting the unique journey and experiences facing members of the LGBTQ community in the world of advertising. VideoOut aims to be the world’s largest video library of coming out stories, and in addition to the compilation, a playlist of the full length personal stores is available to view here: VideoOut + Grey Playlist.

I’m waiting for the NYT to run yet another piece telling us how LGBT friendly Trump is….

  • Daveed_WOW

It took eons to get the DNC to take our side. They are now taking hits for standing up to tyranny and bigotry. This is the dealbreaker issue that makes the Right dig in their heels and get their backs up.

I just realized that I have been out for exactly half my life now… If you’re in a position to do it safely then you owe yourself to do it. It takes a lot of the power away from the bigots once they can’t shame you it’s much harder for them to hurt you

    • Treant

I announced, “I’m here, I’m queer, get used to it.” Then I marched off to my first day of Kindergarten.

      • PickyPecker

How you feeling this morning? Everything went well?

        • Treant

Sore, with pea-sized bumps on either side of my nose where I’m swollen and more swelling internally. Really, I didn’t need to take today off, I would have been just fine. Although I only got about 5 hours of sleep as every time I rolled over and pressed my nose against the pillow the discomfort woke me up.

It seemed to work in the office, but before the numbness wore off the swelling had begun, so I don’t have a final thumbs up yet and probably won’t for a week.

          • Bad Tom

            Sound like decent progress.

          • vorpal 😼

I hope they gave you some nice post-surgical meds and that everything heals quickly and with good results!

          • Treant

Eh, he told me to take Tylenol. And that’s about all this has required.

So far, on basis of what I’ve experienced so far (somewhat swollen but still breathing much easier), I’d definitely recommend the surgery to anybody with nasal cuff collapse.

          • vorpal 😼

Ha! I probably would have fussed until they gave me some Percocet just to shut me up :-). If I’m going to be swollen / recovering, I want to at least do so in a happy, dreamy fog.

Glad you are already noticing substantial improvement and thanks for keeping us updated, Treant!

          • Ninja0980

            Glad you’re doing better!

    • RobynWatts

Likewise! When I came out in 1997, I was told at the time that I was very lucky to have came out at an relatively early age (24). I told my friends that I really didn’t feel ‘lucky’ as I was aware of what we faced in the LGBT community at the time in regards to rights (Or, the lack of.) and the possiblity of losing my career and my family and friends.

No, I came out because I didn’t want to live my life in the closet for the rest of my life. Nor did I want to live a life where I was lying to others about who I really was. Or, spending the rest of my life looking over my shoulder just wondering if people knew if my ‘secret was out’.

In short, I didn’t want to live a lie….I wanted to be myself! And damnit, I’m not go back into the closet!!!

Happy National Coming Out Day, everyone!

  • shellback

It’s not just an issue of dignity. We have jobs, we work, we pay taxes, we are citizens and deserve the rights and benefits of anyone else in this fucked up country. IMO

    • gaycuckhubby

Yeah Justice Kennedy’s reasoning in the same-sex marriage cases were poetic and nice. And I’m forever grateful for them. But I wish they had been more tangible more hard-hitting and more based in evidence and actual harm and not in ideas of dignity. Our fight for equality dispute caught on all sides but appealing to our dignity seems like a more personal cultural Crusade rather than a governmental and judicial exercise

      • Ninja0980

Not only that, but Kennedy seems determined in other rulings to ensure Democrats can’t vote, thus ensuring the only type of judges who will get nominated to the courts are one who will slowly gut all of his LGBT rulings.
He doesn’t appear to get that at all.

      And wildfires…

      • PickyPecker

THere you are! How goes it in the inferno? You guys ok, yes?

        • Steverino

Yes, the fires closest to us are all about four miles away, and so far are in no danger of advancing in our direction. At least we have cooler weather this morning with higher humidity and a slight onshore breeze, so that is good. Even a bit of blue sky, rather than a dense overcast of smoke.

          • Leo Tallant

I am over here on the western edge of Sebastopol with a wide view of the valley looking toward Santa Rosa. This morning I can not see across the fence, the other side of which is the Laguna flood plain. We are socked in with fog, wonderful damp fog. As you said there is some blue sky out there too. My elderly mom who has the sniffer of a blood-hound says she can not even smell the smoke this morning. Perhaps the fog is keeping the smell away for a while. However as it usually does, this fog will dissipate after a while, then we shall see what we can see.

        • JCF

Here in Sacramento, the smoke has REALLY gotten to me today. Eyes burning, nose plugged, and nauseous.

But I know things are so much WORSE where the fires are actually burning.

      • Leo Tallant

That’s the first thing that went through my mind when I saw that meme….

        • Steverino

You know that’s what they’ll say next.

BBC America’s Queers sees eight new writers respond to the 50th anniversary of The Sexual Offences Act — which partially decriminalized homosexual acts between men in the UK — will air throughout the day on Wednesday, October 11. Why do Democrats insist upon being just like Republicans? Seems like there is no difference. No difference at all. They are exactly the same. /s

BBC on USA cable and satellite is showing six episode of QUEER, a BBC series about coming out stories from different periods such as WWII, the 1950s, 1960s, etc. Some are incredibly funny. Other episodes are painfully tragic. All of them good. Set your DVRs!

    • Gustav2

Or you can binge all eight short films the following day, Thursday October 12, on VOD, at BBCAmerica.com and on the BBCA app.

Good advice Mike Pence Com’on OUT

  • Ken M

The DNC needs to STFU after the fact, and start giving a damn in DC. At this point, “We will redouble our efforts, to protect all the progress “we’ve” made, is sheer BS. Is that we, as in LGBT community, we as in the DNC? Wouldn’t doubling mean all of their efforts? Sorry, not buying this one. The GOP doesn’t have that much power on the Hill to be stopping the Dems from getting anything done. That excuse lost any remaining weight with the fall of “Trumpcare.” Old but true…”Actions speak louder than words.”

    • Lars Littlefield

So, you’d rather the DNC not support Coming Out Day? They should just say nothing? Not pure enough for you?

      • Ken M

Did I miss the support before this incident? Where was it? Was any type of announcement notifying people about National Coming Day made? I didn’t say they shouldn’t support it. I work with the TREVOR PROJECT http://www.thetrevorproject.org Don’t get me started on giving the LGBT community hope by offering last minute support.

        • Lars Littlefield

I’m not in a position to reject any support offered as long as Trump is in power. But I also would not reject it if everything was sunny and bright, too. Support is support.

  • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Lots of ugly of memories of the world 25 years ago upon hearing about composer Michael Friedman’s death last month and seeing the Keith Haring poster.

Diagnosed with HIV in July, dead by September….wtf??? He was coverly thin, had KS spots on his face and barely functioning…hadn’t any of his older friends noticed a pattern of progression that was chillingly familiar from the 90s? No one wanted to hurt his feelings, and now he’s dead…he lived in Brooklyn and had health insurance as well.

I just feel sick over this. It’s 2017……….

Sessions just gave carte blanche for states to discriminate against lgbt’s…eradicating Obamas order for fairness and equality, and I didn’t hear one peep from the DNC. We have already had rights rescinded since asshole took office, and I don’t see one fucking thing being done…nor have I seen any coverage other than a 30 second blurb here and there. So, “fighting tooth and nail” seems disingenuous to say the least.
