The Tiki Torch Nazis Return To Charlottesville [VIDEO]

CNBC reports:

White nationalists briefly rallied on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia, where violent clashes in August led to the death of a woman who was run down by a car.

A few dozen white nationalists, led by so-called “alt-right” activist Richard Spencer and carrying torches gathered at Emancipation Park near a covered statue of Confederate general Robert E. Lee, the removal of which was blocked by a court pending the outcome of a legal challenge.

Spencer posted a video on Twitter showing the protest, in which opponents of the removal of Lee’s statue chanted “You will not replace us” and “We will be back.”

  • Cackalaquiano

I had somebody ask me yesterday if I thought the people of Charlottesville supported these neo-Nazis. Everybody here should understand: people in Charlottesville are extremely liberal. It is the home of the University of Virginia and if anything, people are extremely intellectually snooty. They are horrified by these events. They are disgusted that Charlottesville is being associated with Nazis. This does not reflect Charlottesville at all. It’s a beautiful place and worth a visit.

    • Reality.Bites

Yeah, no. I know what you’re saying is true, but I’m not setting foot in the fucking south if I can possibly help it.

      • Cackalaquiano

Fair enough, but these racists are absolutely everywhere. In the South, you choose your friends wisely, and frankly, there’s no personality more delightful than that of a liberal native Southerner.

        • Reality.Bites

          Yes there are racists everywhere.

But they don’t control the government everywhere. They do throughout the south.

          • prixator

I live there, too. But, don’t forget it was only 3 years ago that we had a duly elected bigoted mayor. And his brother is running for mayor again next year.

There are parts of Virginia where I assume the majority of residents support Nazis and their causes. Not Charlottesville though, certainly.

Outside of Northern Virginia and certain other jurisdictions in the state, Virginia is Alabama.

      • Cackalaquiano

Nah, Roanoke’s a blue dot in the middle of deep, deep red mountains. Not as blue as Charlottesville, but not a raging cesspool of intolerance.
And before anyone brings up the Democrat mayor who said something ridiculous about Japanese internment camps, that guy was a loudmouth who frequently spouted off before he thought about what he was saying. He was widely viewed as an idiot.

        • Joe in PA

Is it really? Wow, I wouldn’t have thought that. But then again “not a raging cesspool of intolerance is a pretty low bar. πŸ™‚

I’ve been to Charlottesville several times and can vouch for how diverse and liberal it is. It’s a lovely place to visit and I saw nothing there that indicates that the citizenry support White Supremacists. I’m just surprised how long it is taking to tear down that statue.

    • stuckinthewoods

A bunch of disaffected suburban Walmart Tiki torch bearing Nazis in Dockers, marching bravely in the safe city of Charlottesville, chanting “Putin is our friend”. Meanwhile, on the other side of the planet, true heroes put their lives on the line and rose up in Russian streets calling out “Down with the Tsar.” I wish we could swap. I’d rather have people who love our country than those who spit in the eye of everything we stand for, while conveniently protected by the laws they hold in contempt.

Proud Boys. The so-called anti-wanks movement on the march. If those terms are new to you as they were to me, I strongly recommend this episode of This American Life that explains them.

Thanks for the link, lot of information there, I’ll be giving it a listen! Those are new terms to me, too.

        • Ernest Endevor

I’ve listened a few times. First time I kept having to pick my chin off the floor. But it’s just about the most informative piece I’ve come across. Turns out when we were characterizing these boys as living in mommy’s basement and being sick and tired of not getting everything they wanted… we were right.

      • John30013

The This American Life story is must-listen. Thanks for the link. Really sheds light on the mindset of these idiots. It’s bro-culture meets Christian Identity. And when the founding dude says it’s all about beers, you just know he’s never had a single self-reflective thought in his entire life.

Sadly, it seems it’s not possible to get these people to see the intellectual vacancy of their “movement”. As one guy in the story said, they’re just “mediocre white guys” who think that alone entitles them to claim a mantle of “greatness”.

“Years later”? Consequences are NOW. They’ve limited themselves to Hobby Lobby, Blackwater, Walmart, Chik-fil-a and Heritage Foundation when it comes to future employers, and more than a few participants will discover that they will need a new employer soon. And of course that, in their tiny snowflake minds, will be the fault of the eeeeevil soshulist liebruls.

I was more thinking the really dumb teenagers you know are in the mix here, but if consequences are current AND future for the “grown men” then I’m very happy indeed!

As soon as the Lee statue is removed, they will lose the rallying point.

      Heh.

      • GayOldLady

Apparently they don’t understand that the more they use that statue as a place to stir up racial division and insurrection, the more likely that Statue is to come down, with or without a court order.

        • David Walker

Is this the one with the tarp over it? The tarp that keeps getting ripped off? If so, why didn’t they just set fire to the tarp? Certainly it would not have been hot enough to melt the statue. Perhaps the Tiki Torches wouldn’t mask the smell of burning birdshit.

          • GayOldLady

Yep, it’s the same statue. And last night their numbers were greatly diminished from the last time they marched. They also weren’t armed this time like they were the last time so their bravery was back in the hotel room in a suitcase. I did notice the guys around Spencer, dressed in Suit or Sport jackets, looked to be body guards and I saw what appeared to be a firearm on the one with a sport coat and jeans. So I’m sure at least a few of them were concealed carrying.

        • Gustav2

I know, they are their own worse enemy. Overt racism is no longer effective, institutional and polite racism is.

        • vorpal 😼

I don’t think they care two shits about the statue.

Don’t get me started on those friggin’ “Hell Houses.”

Halloween was always my favorite holiday and I made my own costumes….. badly. The best (WORST) was the troll costume, which was a tunic with leggings I made of cheap cotton cloth THEN dyed green in hot dye the day before Halloween. It shrank of course and became the gayest Peter Pan outfit you’ve ever seen. It was supposed to be scary, but that year I went as jail-bait. πŸ™„

          • Treant

            “Trick or treat!”

            (eyes you up) “Trick.”

Back in the seventies before candy poisoning and Stranger Danger, Mom used to send me out with a bag and a wave.

          • greenmanTN

            Yep. I went for MILES!

          • Treant

It wasn’t good unless the bag was starting to break from the weight. And you always double-bagged with industrial-strength bagging.

And we wore masks we could barely see out of, and all black without lights, and stayed out too late and were sick as dogs the next morning. And it was the best time ever!

          • greenmanTN

Remember the Saturday Night Live consumer reports type skit with Jane Curtin and Dan Ackroyd? He was a manufacturer of Halloween costumes she deemed “unsafe.”

The Invisible Pedestrian= all black from head to toe
Johnny Flaming Torch= a bag of oily rags and a lighter

There were others but I’ve forgotten them….

          • Treant

And the unsafe toys. “Bag O’ Broken Glass” “Johnny Space Helmet” (a plastic bag over the head). I loved those!

      • Treant

That should be very easy; image it (already done), turn the orange to white, and print out and pin pattern it to the pumpkin with some chalk dust to render it more visible.

    • Bluto
      • Treant

I’d put that out and tell people it’s the “$5 Crack Whore.”

Although I confess I’ve looked a bit like that on some evenings. Without the orange skin, triangular eyes, and bad teeth, of course.

    • Pat

That is amazing! I tried one of those pumpkin patterns just once. Erm…. no. But I am in awe of everyone who can produce something like that.

      • Treant

It’s really not hard–but prick through the pattern first with a pin to assure that you can follow the lines. Then chalk the pinholes, and use a pencil or pen to draw the lines so you don’t cut something you shouldn’t.

And for complex designs, get up and walk away when you start going bug-eyed. That’s when you start making mistakes.

  • worstcultever

So now they do lil’ flash mobs and then scurry away. If they weren’t so boring and white and sexually frustrated and humorlessly patriarchal, they’d at least do a little fun dancing or something. But no. No. NEIN!!

  • Ken M

“The South will rise again. Russia is our friend.” Let’s not forget everything these “white nationalists” were saying. White Nationalists? The PC in this country makes me sick sometimes, on both sides of the fence.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I wish Mueller would ask Richard a few questions about his friendship with Russia.

    • KnownDonorDad

I know, right? “We’re not white supremacists, we just only want to be with white people through ‘peaceful ethnic cleansing!'” Insane.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

I heard they fled to a tour bus right after. Also, I am imagining how differently it would go down in some other cities.

    • kaydenpat

They depended on the element of surprise to stage this nonsense. Weaklings.

When you’ve lost Charlottesville in North Carolina with this crap, you’ve pretty much lost. It’s wise to head for Possum Hollow, Mississippi as your last refuge.

Just feeling a bit overwhelmed by this alt-right/religous freedom loving/misogynistic/transphobic culture…trust me, they wont win if I have anything to do with it.
        They should NEVER be accepted

        • David Walker

Thank you. I understand your sense of being overwhelmed too well. The bullshit one encounters when you stand up for what you know is right is exasperating (Why can’t they understand?) and discouraging. Except for JMG and the odd venture outside, I’ve closed myself off. I can’t deal with the possibility of meeting one of the deplorables…the town is full of them. Hermiting is OK for me. Who’s to miss me? And who’s to listen to me? But you guys need to mobilize and get what was once a pretty good country back on the right track. Please…punch a nazi for me.

  • kaydenpat

Charlottesville should have taken down the dang traitor statue to put an end to this foolishness.

    Virginia Code
Β§ 18.2-423.01. Burning object on property of another or a highway or other public place with intent to intimidate; penalty.
    A. Any person who, with the intent of intimidating any person or group of persons, burns an object on the private property of another without permission, is guilty of a Class 6 felony.

    B. Any person who, with the intent of intimidating any person or group of persons, burns an object on a highway or other public place in a manner having a direct
tendency to place another person in reasonable fear or apprehension of death or bodily injury is guilty of a Class 6 felony.

Btw speaking of flash mobs – apparently there was a worldwide β€œWuthering” day this past summer, where people gathered in many different cities to pay tribute to Kate Bush and her oddball masterpiece – this one is my personal fav, from Melbourne – but I like the ones from other places too, esp with bearded guys in the red dresses/black sashes & doing her moves

God DAMN this country is so finished.

    • marshlc

Even in the sense he uses it most often – “fake news” – that was something kinda sorta coined to refer to the Russian-bot news that got him elected. He just co-opted the term.

I spend a lot of time with very small children.

“Look at my picture look at my picture look what I drew!”
“It’s very nice, it looks like you worked very hard”
“Is it the best one you’ve ever seen?!?”
“Well, I like all the colours you used”
“I think it’s the very best picture.”

How odd it must be, interviewing the president of the US, and using the same techniques one uses when dealing with four year olds.

      • worstcultever

I doubt it’s odd at all for Fuckabee. When you’re religiously insane, a fat bewigged pompous sexual predator probably smells like the greatest dog biscuit you’ve ever eaten!

      • SoCalGal20

If you just take apart what he says, it’s just so…childish, aside from being flat out, demonstrably false.

His “reasoning” goes: One of the greatest terms he’s come up with is “fake”. MAYBE other people have used that term but since he’s “never noticed it” he came up with it.

Also, in terms of “fake news”, that was the left that came up with that usage, which was then immediately appropriated by the right and they ran with it.

        • marshlc

He has an air of smug simplicity that I don’t think I have ever seen in an adult before. Sitting in a fog of sweet self satisfaction, patting himself on the back for nothing.

Very small children are filled with that naive egotism, but in them it’s endearing – they have not yet learned how much they don’t know. In a seventy year old man, it’s …… I dunno, it’s kinda frightening.

    • David Walker

This will make it so much easier for lexicographers to pinpoint its introduction to the language. It will also, unfortunately, require a fair amount of tap dancing to explain why “fake” has shown up dictionaries for-like-ever.

    • KnownDonorDad

The Nazis used the term LΓΌgenpresse.

  • marshlc

“You will not replace us”. What does that even mean? How does a person go through their life, looking at the other human beings they interact with, as competitors who are trying to “replace” them?

My feelings about these guys varies according to the day, and usually ranges somewhere between contempt and fear. But the one thing I always feel is that I’d hate to live in their heads – it must be such a small frightened place.

    • worstcultever

I can’t even get past the “YAY ME CUZ SKIN COLOR, YAY ME, ME ME ME” – it’s so beyond infantile, ridiculous – yeah ok, you’re white – um, is that it? that’s the extent of your creative message/contribution to the world?

      • David Walker

And it’s not as if they did anything to bring that about. There’s a theory that parental copulation contributes heavily to skin coloring.

I’ve said this before (one of those few times I know I’m repeating myself): Picture #3, the woman in front, is Barbara Gittings. I’d probably heard about Thornton Wilder and Aaron Copland by then, but one night she was on the David Susskind Show and she laid it all on the line. Any bullshit comment or question he’d come up, she nailed him. I met her many years later and was unable to say anything but “thank you.” What a treasure, pioneer, and cool person. Thanks for posting.

        • greenmanTN

Definitely. Barbara and others were true heroes. Yet another thing that disgusts me about the homocons. These people fought for the rights they take for granted.

I don’t think that’s going to work as most people don’t like nazis. It’s, like, this weird thing.

But please, let people know how few you are in any given community and make sure to expose yourselves to ridicule, photography, and the consequent loss of employment. You go, boys who aren’t even as white as I am. You go. Some of us don’t need to justify our shortcomings…we work on overcoming or eliminating them.

      • Taylor Bixler

It may not, but local media where referring to these assholes as “white activists” initially in their reporting. That is textbook normalization about a group whose member literally murdered someone 2 months ago.
