Frothy Mix On Las Vegas: Why Don’t Liberals Go After Video Games Instead Of People’s Guns? [VIDEO]

SQUIRREL:

During a panel discussion on CNN’s State of the Union this morning, political commentator and former GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum waded into the debate by taking aim at the entertainment industry.

After finding consensus with liberals on the banning of bump stocks and modifying semi-automatic weapons to shoot like automatic ones, Santorum then said more attention should be focused on video games and films.

“Violence in television and the video games — there is a mountain of evidence out there, psychological evidence, about what we’re doing to our young people with these video games, violent video games, and you never hear the left trying to go after Hollywood or the gaming market,” Santorum exclaimed.

  • Lars Littlefield

    I blame Gun Smoke.

    • easygoingmister

I used to daydream that Thad & Newly got a little place together after Newly quit deputy-ing for Matt. They would have made a handsome couple.

  • You won’t have my Tetris handheld until you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

  • Cackalaquiano

Well, to be fair, there was that time some dude used an Atari to mass murder all those… wait. Nope. Didn’t happen.

    • Tulle Christensen

Well I did try and use my copy of Fallout 4 to off my noisy neighbor but all that happened is he slowed down to low frames per second

That’s pretty amazing! I’ll bet that’s what they do when no humans are watching!

        • vorpal 😼

We set my laptop on the kitchen floor to record one time while stepping out to run errands to spy on our dog to see what he did while we were gone. (He knew he wasn’t allowed in the kitchen because he always would find some way to get into everything and we knew he was breaking the rules when we weren’t looking.)

About three seconds after we left, he ran into the kitchen, sniffed around, couldn’t find any food, and then proceeded to get up on his back legs to reach the stove and thoroughly lick the frying pan I cook eggs in each morning. I had no idea I was getting a healthy dose of doggy drool to go along with them. Then he left.

A couple minutes later, more disturbingly, our black cat, Duncan (avatar kitty), came in and sat in front of the camera and looked like he was watching himself on my screen… for 18 minutes.

          Pervert.

          • Xiao Ai: The Social Gadfly

Shades of Felix the Cat! Lol

          • AJ Drew

lolz! I had a trial security system placed, with interior cameras, and my biggest surprise was that one of my dogs paces the perimeter all night (aww, why so anxious? Hmm. But, yay?,) and one sneaks onto my bed and snuggles me when I’m deeep asleep but scurries away when I move at all. Good dog, bad dog, nah, just awwww.

          • BillyDee4

I had a dog that would follow me to my bedroom door and lie down as I shut the door. When I woke up I would find her right outside my door looking like she was just waking up. I thought she was great for wanting to protect me. I later found out that she actually slept in my sons’ room and she would jump up as soon as she heard me and scurry to my door.

  • Treant

Video games don’t kill people. NEXT!

(Back to Divinity Original Sin 2, which is excellent, if a memory hog).

    • Jeffg166

      Beat me to it.

      • Treant

        It’s worth repeating.

    • High-five! I just finished playing (reading?) this yuri VN, but I don’t think it’s gonna make go and kill anyone.

      • Treant

I dunno, I have the sudden urge to go Dimension Bolt somebody. Possibly even use the Gloves of Teleportation.

Talk me down, Sarah. Talk me down.

        • There’s no fighting it! It’s crazy what video games make us do, eh? I played Pokemon when I was younger, and then I spent so much time pushing through tall grass and looking for cute critters.

        • Joe in PA

Pffft, get a room you two. Sheesh. 🙂

(I have no idea what you are talking about…but it sounds sexual…just saying)

    • FAEN

Duh. Video games don’t kill people; people with guns kill people.

  • bambinoitaliano

Hey idiot! Let me place you in front of an experiment. Stand right there. I got two group of people right in front of you. The first group with video game controllers and the other with loaded guns. I’m going to tell them to start triggering their respective devices. You tell me….oh wait! Hey frothy, are you okay? Speak up! Oh well!

  • sdnative1958

It’s The Beatles’ fault. That long hair, that crazy music.

    • Joe in PA

Oh, I think we could go back further…Elvis and those swinging hips. 🙂

  • MBear

“mountain of evidence out there, psychological evidence, about what we’re doing to our young people with these video games”

I wonder what video games that Vegas shooter played?

    • Bad Tom

Video poker. Years and years of it.

Which is, of course, not a First Person Shooter game. Indeed, there are no guns at all, just virtual cards. And money, money, money.

      • MBear

        So…how many guns ya got?

  • Harveyrabbit

Well, video games do have an odd and eerie way of predicting the future. Time to build that armed space fleet!

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ae626d000a945e99652cfdfc090ff20c95f021e3faac617c02476e33995fe13d.gif

    • Treant

The aliens can only move back and forth, and down one unit of space equivalent to 1.8 times their spaceship height at the edges of the world. We’ll be fine with cannons.

    • HZ81

That’s probably the video game our Vegas shooter played—and it was new when he played it.

      Scamtorum is a scumbag.

    • Gustav2

Spent many a break from bartending during 2 to 4 pm slow period in front of that screen.

  • Gustav2

Because video games don’t kill people.

  • Paula

I doubt the Vegas gunmen played many video games growing up Frothy Mix.

    • Gustav2

      Pong Rules!

      • Paula

I remember when Pong came out. It was my senior year of high school. All the 18 year olds were excited because we could go to bars and play Pong. It was incredible!!! People would line up to play it.

      • Brian Burleson

At first glance I thought that you typed “Bong Rules” & I found myself in violent agreement with you. Too stoned to go out and shoot people. Wishful thinking.

    • April

That shooter played tons of Video Poker at those casinos. Shouldn’t Santorum rail against them?

    • Librarykid

Speaking of Frothy Mix, has everyone Googled Santorum a few times today to pay back his sychophantic ass?

      • JCF

When I heard that he was behind the last (please dear God!) version of DrumpfDeathCare, Graham-Cassidy, I googled Santorum dozens of time that day! [“Google Santorum”: you need to click on, then refresh, http://spreadingsantorum.com/ Join in, everyone!]

        • Librarykid

Thank you. What does clicking “refresh” do?

          • JCF

Google search registers the most popular sites at the top of a search. Therefore, the more clicks that spreadingsantorum.com gets (clicks including refresh), the more likely IT is to rise to the top where people can easily see it. It’s the work of clicking on/then refreshing spreadingsantorum.com that makes “Google Santorum” possible.

          • Librarykid

            Thank you.

    • Todd20036

      Video poker count?

  • paganguy

I dunno… maybe because the only way I could kill someone with a video game is by using it to club them to death – which would pretty much negate the ability to a) do it from afar and b) kill or maim hundreds of people at a time.

The level of stupidity and/or irrationality on display these days is just staggering.

    • Tulle Christensen

Since I digitally download my games these days do I have to use my SSD to club someone. seems a bit pricey

      • paganguy

Maybe you could download them to a stick drive and use it to gouge their eyes out.

      • Bad Tom

        But, oh, so fast!

    • When playing Dark Souls, I got ticked and threw my game controller at the wall. That might have hurt someone. *shrug*

  • Halou

What video games were these people playing?
The idea that games are what make people violent has no basis in reality.

    http://s2.thingpic.com/images/fp/mBNNZE7NmeU7fwjf3Ziyk13q.jpeg

    • Paula

There were several. They were kerosene powered, back then.

  • barrixines
    • Halou

I too remember the great pong massacre on 1973. Second only to Bowling Green. #NeverRemember

      • bzrd

wasn’t it the pink pong massacre?

    • Andymac3

Oh the humanity, doesn’t anyone think of the image burn?

    • FAEN

One of my favorite games is ‘The Getaway’ which is pretty damn violent. It’s never ever made me want to replicate it IRL. These bastards are clutching at the same fucking straws.

    • Librarykid

WOW! When that speeds up it reminds me of the opening of The Outer Limits. Dear God, I remember when TVs had horizontal and vertical hold dials and when the tube for each got weak, you were screwed,

  • Tomcat

So the answer is to ban video games and use the real guns, I see how that might be a problem.

  • Todd20036

    1) We aren’t going after people’s guns. We are trying to regulate them the way cars are regulated.
    2) Most Americans want this already.
    3) Guns kill.
    4) Video games don’t kill.
    5) Kids have more trouble getting violent video games than actual guns.
    6) Don’t you have a late term aborted fetus to play with?

  • Michael R

Someone killed someone in the Bible ,
why isn’t Rick Santorum going after the Bible ?

    • bzrd

jeeeeeeeeeeeez, god killed everyone except for noah and his penguins

    • PeterC

      Yah, over three million.

  • Bad Tom

All Your Stupid Are Belong To Us

That it does, Frothy, that it does.

  • Taylor

Paddock’s generation didn’t grow up playing video games. Try again, Rick!

  • Tomcat

That explains why NASA is shooting for the stars. They played Asteroids as kids.

    Shame on them, such violence.

  • safari

This was a 60-something year old man.

Perhaps we should do something about what they watch on TV.

    • Tomcat

      The news and C-Span?

    • Paula

He probably watched Gunsmoke, Rawhide, The Streets of San Francisco, Combat, The Rat Patrol, etc. There were shows like that back then, too.
I always knew the was something evil about Clarabelle the Clown on Howdy Doody. And don’t get me started on Mr. Moose or Beany and Cecil.

      • Lars Littlefield

Mr. Moose was a Russian operative who reported directly to Kruschev.

        • Paula

That’s what I figured, too. Mr. Greenjeans….International mercenary employed to keep the Captain safe.

        • ben-andy

Does Rocket J Squirrel know that Bullwinkle is working w/ Boris and Natasha [probably via fb now]?

          • Librarykid

Bullwinkle is a different moose than Mr. Moose.

        • Librarykid

But Moose and Squirrel outmaneuvered Boris and Natasha.

      • Furface

The original Clarabelle was portrayed by Bob Kesheen who created/played Captain Kangaroo. Truely a malevolent genius.

        • Paula

          Captain Chaos!

      • ben-andy

Ping pong balls. The memesis of Captain Kangaroo. All evil comes from ping pong balls. Pong was just the 2.0 electronic version.

    • Lars Littlefield

      Matlock?

    • greenmanTN

      Fox News?

      • Adam King

        Bingo.

        • Uncle Mark

Yes, “Bingo” as played at the Catholic Churches (that Santorum claims to attend) can lead to violence, especially for an pedestrian getting between the the bingo players and the parking lot

          • ben-andy

No, silly. Bingo causes pedophilia in priests. But he’d rather talk about video games and my home town, Hollywood. Funny that.

    • kaydenpat

Ha!! They need to stop watching Pat Robertson, Duck Dynasty and that awful Duggar clan just for starters.

    • JeffreyMGr

It’s those gott damm Murder She Wrote reruns. Mmmm, that Jessica.

      • Mickey Bitsko

        Cabot Cove is evil!!!!

        • RKitty01

how many other towns the size of Cabot Cove have such a high death rate

    • gothambear

or put more warning stickers on those violent-lyric new-fangled CD thingies…

  • Bluto
    • TrueWords

Now that is perfect and true….love how you only have to insert thoughts and prayers…

Myth #8: “Vicious, violent video games” deserve more blame than guns.

Click and drag works fine for me using Win 10.

This is something new. And somewhat i inconsistent. Just tried again and now it’s working as before. Hope it continues.

I am running 10.11.6, it works fine for me.
            What can I say…

  • Halou

I was under the impression that giving people a save means of venting their frustration, such as killing virtual characters in a game that can be reset when they’re done, was a great way of avoiding real life mass killings. Especially now that the means to carry out mass killings are abundant and are sure to become a whole lot more so in future.

    • Karl Dubhe

I think that anyone who wants to kill tons of people will not be satisfied with watching electrons being turned off. 🙁

DAMAGE REPORT: This is mildly annoying.

    • AJ Drew

The Real Story reports: “Cat actually was telling gamer to get her ass off the couch ‘cuz dinner was scheduled 5 hours ago.”

In other news: video game aficionados are least likely to become mass-killers because… “Dammit, Boss got me again. (sigh) OK, one more try…”

      • bambinoitaliano

They have no problem telling you to stop what you are doing. Books, piano, keyboard, laptop, your faces they will sit on.

        • vorpal 😼

We have this annoying upright piano that we got for free years ago (free meaning we paid the moving costs, which were by no means unsubstantial).

Hubby keeps swearing up and down that “one day” he will learn how to play it. This piano is, at this point, probably better traveled than most people.

The only one who plays it is our black boy Duncan. He is getting surprisingly good at chords.

Edit: a friend of ours called us three weeks ago to see if we wanted it tuned. I said, “I don’t think Duncan cares that much.”

          • AJ Drew

Oh man, I’d love an upright piano. One of the few good childhood memories I have is of an old upright that had a player! I’d try to match my fingers with the magically moving keys… when the parents died, my fam had it hauled away as junk and when I found out what they did, I cried. I still would have been mad if they had sold it, (and even in bad shape it was worth $$,) but hauled away as junk… bwah!

          • Bad Tom

A player piano hauled away as junk.
            That is SAD.

And what do you bet trump will claim he did it all after they come back from the destruction.

Sanitarium has antiquated views about video games, BUT he may be right just not in the way he expects. There is a correlation between the rise of the alt-right nazis and multi-player video games. It wouldn’t surprise me if the young losers that form Vanilla ISIS were first exposed to hate speech through video games at a likely early age. This is something that should be looked at more closely.

I’ve always thought if I ever bumped into Mila Kunis that’s what I’d say to her before she rolled her eyes and smacked me 😊

  • Ken M

If the media is serious about backing “gun control” then they have to get people to understand/know, that taking the guns isn’t part of the initial plan. As long as the right and the NRA are successful in making people believe that this is what we want to do (now) it will be a losing battle. Current Federal laws are so limited that there is very little that can be done, at least at first, to actually take away peoples guns. It can be worked up to as a goal, but it must be taken off the table as the first thing to be done. Americans don’t like the concept of thing being “taken” from us, whatever it is. Many see this idea of reclaiming guns as just that. The right expands the line of thought to “if they take our guns, what will be next?” The black and white of this tactic is fear, not logic. Bring up waiting periods and background checks and suddenly it makes sense as not such a bad idea. Remember, the Second Amendment was originally designed to arm the people to stand against the Government. The same Government that now is kissing the asses of the “new militia.”

    • Tomcat

Your own words (initial plan) is exactly what they are afraid of.
They are afraid the controls will escalate to actually taking everyone’s guns from them. They would rather give you their wives than their guns.

      • Ken M

Escalating to taking isn’t the same as what the NRA wants people to believe. That’s their fear tactic. The government knocking down doors and infringing on “Second Amendment right.” Pure BS, and the rest of society has to know that. Diffuse the fear, and you diffuse the need for all the gun owner protections.

    • Adam King

They should let everybody keep as many guns as they like as long as they store them up their butts.

      • Ken M

lol We can get “proper storage” requirements passed later. Great suggestion though. 😉

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Why has he emerged again anyway ? Why is he invited on ???

  • Mr_Fat

Because video games don’t kill people you dumb motherfucker

  • Gigi

2,977 people were killed on 9/11. Afterward, measures were put in place to ensure that such a tragedy would never happen again. Tens of thousands of Americans are killed in violent gun deaths each year and conservative do nothing but shrug their shoulders and deflect from the problem.

    • sdnative1958

And the beauty of it is they keep bringing up 9/11 and comparing the death count to mass shootings as some kind of sick defense of allowing gun ownership to be easy and flourish, and the types of weaponry citizens can obtain to be all over the map – including high-power multiple-round weapons.

Because box cutters killed more people than guns.

    • AJ Drew

Yup. And the tired “so, should we make laws controlling planes (cars, knives, baseball bats, blah blah blah.)” And yet, it’s pretty simple really… a product which solely exists for the purpose of harm to others should require some requirements upon the potential user.

    • Uncle Mark

Perhaps if Al Qaeda paid our Republicans as much as the NRA does, Congress would let them blow up as many planes or buildings as they like.

    • Joe in PA

As Jon Oliver notes…one crazy fuck got on an airplane with a shoe bomb (that didn’t kill anyone) and we all have to take our shoes off. Arrrgh.

  • Ken M

Isn’t Rick supposedly making his way back to the Hill? One of Trump’s newest cronies? It would explain his face back in the spotlight again.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

I’ve been defending this universe from hordes of alien invaders since I was a child, and not once did I ever receive, or ask for, a thank you.

WTF have you ever done?! NOTHING! That’s what!

Shut the fuck up and get off the stage!

  • Jason

So how much was this 64 year old real estate developer/ gambler influenced by video games. I’ll wait for your answer.

  • Max_1

A video game shot 500+ people in Vegas…

    • Ken M

http://bill.brioux.tv/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/069.jpg I thought it was responsible for his love of hookers. 😉 Legal in NV, illegal in Las Vegas…so they claim, sorta like guns.

      • kareemachan

Notice: they are all bleached blondes. In red dresses. Kinda like repug women and Faux Noise meme-spewers…. so who copied who? (Whom?)

  • FAEN

Other countries citizens play the same violent video games and there are no mass shootings.

Your ‘logic’ makes no sense at all Frothy Mix.

    • Joe in PA

Bingo…I came here to post just that. AND they watch many (if not all) of the US violent movies. I personally don’t watch violent movies, not because it might turn me violent, I don’t like it. Stupid putz.

Way back in the dark ages, when we went to BlockBusters to pick out a movie, if the box had a picture of a weapon of some sort on it…I’d bypass the movie. I missed a lot of movies. 🙂

      • FAEN

Great minds and all that eh😊

      • FAEN

LOL-I remember renting my first dvd from Blockbuster. Not a surprise they went out of business. Most of their movies by the end were absolute shit.

I forgot about old Frothy – Donnie stole the crazy-light from him….

        Ha!

      And yet:

Trump disrespected a gold star family.
      Trump disrespected McCain, a POW.
Trump keeps wanting to put soldiers in harm’s way to satisfy his ego.
Trump respects Nazis, who are about as anti American has can be.
Trump disrespects the Constitution by working towards making LBGTs second class citizens.

      Bye Felicia.

      • Lizard

Trump is actively threatening the lives of thousands of US troops stationed in South Korea right now.

      • Librarykid

        But Benghazi!

    • Ken M

Do these people EVER work? This is the first I’ve heard about Pence in weeks, if not longer.

      • Silver Badger

Pence is the motive force behind the anti gay and trans work of the trump administration. He is the real power. trump is just a diversion to keep us distracted.

        • Ken M

So do we really want him for president?

          • AJ Drew

That’s a serious question and a conundrum. With DT, we don’t know what to expect, ever, and that’s dangerous. With Pence, we pretty much know what to expect, but could we effectively resist it?

          • Ken M

I would rather deal with Pence. Hoping the 2018 elections sway Congress.

          • Lizard

I’m torn. The best thing that can be said about Pence is that he won’t start a nuclear war, which isn’t exactly high praise (but is still technically better than the current situation). On the other hand, he’ll be much more effective and shoving his extremist Christian agenda through than the buffoon we have right now.

          • Adam King

No, we don’t. We need to get all the Republicans out of office. Every single last one.

          • Ken M

          • Librarykid

            Preferably before.

      • grada3784

        And Mother didn’t object?

    • safari

My great aunt goes to R-rated movies and walks out the first time someone says fuck. She then calls her friends to complain about it. Same here.

      • greenmanTN

OT, but I just love book reviews on Amazon where people complain about the “dirty words” and sex in the book and give them a low rating. Due to the sorts of things I read it’s often a mystery novel with several murders in it. I used to point that out to them (“It’s a novel about a serial killer and it was “fuck” that bothered you?!”) but pissing into the wind gets old.

        • safari

The clearest example I saw of that had to do with people complaining that an explicit blog about a servicemember’s time in combat was berated by his followers because the naughty words he used describing combat was just too much for their precious minds.

          • kareemachan

They clutched their pearls so hard they broke!

        • Ha ha. When I was in college, I was in the Anime Club at my school and we watched a series called Elfen Lied which had some extremely gratuitous gore and violence in it (and one scene that seriously made me feel ill). But the complaint of another girl in the club? That it had nudity. Seriously.

I will admit Frothy’s explanation makes more sense that some preacher’s I heard earlier today. He said it was because of some “un-repented sin” in the shooter’s life. Predictably, he didn’t bother to specify what that “sin” was…..

    Long story:
I was 15 and joined the debate team as a Freshman in a Catholic H.S. My partner and I had our first mock debate and our topic was… abortion. Our assignment was to debate the pro side of abortion. Often we were asked by the anti-abortion debate side was, “How many dead babies is too many dead babies; One? Two? 20?”

It seems this same technique isn’t being applied to the pro-2nd Amendment folks out there. WHY???

    • JWC

Re brand the NRA for what they are a terrorist group

      • Nowhereman

They really are. They enable mass gun slaughters every goddam day.

    • Max_1

Because obviously shooting 500+ concert goers isn’t enough to mobilize people to act…
Because obviously killing 59 people isn’t enough life wasted…

      • AJ Drew

It’s not “just” the carnage, it’s that he used a product which sole’s intent is to cause harm to others, and that product did so very effectively, in a short time and from a far distance, and all without the product user (buyer) needing to have any useful restrictions. Horrifying.

        • kareemachan

And I’ve read a “rebuttal” to this: “But, but, but…. I need it to go hunting.”

          Yeah, right.

          • AJ Drew

Well, if one has VERY bad aim or needs 10,000 pounds of venison to survive the winter, maybe? /s

    • Nowhereman

It is–and the answer is always the same. Dead babies are the cost of their freedom… Oh, and they aren’t pro-second amendment any more than anti-abortionists are pro-life. They are pro-gun. If they were pro-second second amendment, they’d read the first half of the amendment with as much fervor as the second half.

    • Treant

“The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants.”

In this case, those people musta been patriots and tyrants. Duh.

And the answer to how many babies is too many babies is, “Strawman argument. Embryos and fetuses have been legally ruled to not be babies. If you can show me an embryo living on its own in a cradle with Mommy and Daddy, we can talk. Until then, it can be considered a parasite living at the sufferance of the mother.”

  • Nowhereman

Video games glorify guns and killing. No way that the NRA would allow them to be regulated. Same with TV and Movies. Blow it out your ass, Frothy. Guns are incredibly dangerous. They are what need to be regulated.

    • Guns>games anything but guns is fair game.

  • TrueWords

Myth #2: Guns don’t kill people—people kill people.

Fact-check: People with access to more guns tend to kill more people—with guns. States with higher gun ownership rates have higher gun murder rates—as much as 114 percent higher than states with lower gun ownership rates.

    • A recent study looking at 30 years of homicide data found that for every one percent increase in a state’s gun ownership rate, there is a nearly one percent increase in its firearm homicide rate.

    • Gun death rates are generally lower in states with restrictions such as safe-storage requirements or assault-weapons bans.http://www.motherjones.com/wp-content/uploads/ownership-vs-deaths630.png

    • Nowhereman

Hear hear! My state, Alaska, is Number 1 with a bullet! We have no gun laws and you can open carry whatever you want wherever the hell you want to (except the airport and the courthouse) We also have a big problem with alcohol, SAD, meth, heroin and opioids, domestic violence and suicide! Woot Woot!

      • Adam King

        And Sarah Palin.

        • greenmanTN

States that have higher rates of Sarah Palin also have higher suicide and alcohol drug abuse rates.

    • bkmn

Suicide by gun is much higher in easy to own gun states too.

    • Gerry Fisher

I wonder what’s up with Delaware. (Hawaii’s outlier status is understandable, I think.)

  • TrueWords

Myth #5: Keeping a gun at home makes you safer.

Fact-check: Owning a gun has been linked to higher risks of homicide, suicide, and accidental death by gun.

    • For every time a gun is used in self-defense in the home, there are 7 assaults or murders, 11 suicide attempts, and 4 accidents involving guns in or around a home.

    • 43 percent of homes with guns and kids have at least one unlocked firearm.

    • In one experiment, one third of 8-to-12-year-old boys who found a handgun pulled the trigger.

  • Dunkerblinker

    Mario don’t kill people….

  • TrueWords

Myth #10: We don’t need more gun laws—we just need to enforce the ones we have.

Fact-check: Weak laws and loopholes backed by the gun lobby have made it easier for people to get guns illegally. And existing gun laws aren’t preventing guns from getting into the wrong hands: More than 75 percent of the weapons used in mass shootings between 1982 and 2012 were obtained legally.

    • As much as 40 percent of all gun sales involve private sellers and don’t require background checks. In a survey, 40 percent of prison inmates who used guns in their crimes said they’d gotten them this way. More than 80 percent of gun owners support closing this loophole.

    • An investigation found that 62 percent of online gun sellers were willing to sell to buyers who said they couldn’t pass a background check.

    • When researchers posed as illegal “straw” buyers, 20 percent of licensed California gun dealers agreed to sell handguns to them.

    • The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives did not have a permanent director for seven years, due to an NRA-backed requirement that the Senate approve nominees.

“But why don’t women go to the police when they’re raped?!”

      Gee, I wonder.

      • SoCalGal20

If you read the article, the court just basically made an arbitrary paternity ruling without any involvement of the victim. The entire thing is ridiculous. The victim’s comment at the end of the article is that she thinks the state wants some of their money back because she’s getting public assistance for her and her son.

        • Lizard

Reading the article, it’s obvious that he’s using her son to continue to harass her. She’ll have to see him in court, she can’t move further than 100 miles away, etc.

          Fucking disgusting, indeed.

          • SoCalGal20

The judge is the one who released the woman’s address to the rapist, ordered her to stay within 100 miles. The judge is as guilty as the rapist at this point. And conveniently unavailable for comment on Friday.

          • Lizard

And they’re claiming that the rapist didn’t instigate any of it, that the paternity and custody were investigated when she filed for public assistance. Of course, she needs assistance because when he raped and impregnated her at the age of 12, she dropped out of school to work jobs to support them.

I hate the fucking universe right now. I hope that judge is politically drawn and quartered.

          • netxtown

I could be out in the weeds…but it looks like Michigan is setting this up to go after the rapist for child support – including back payment. The judge is looking to get her off the welfare rolls…must be a republican judge. Still – NONE of what this judge has done justifies the hell the victim has been put through. what a disgusting mess.

        • Lazycrockett

Maybe Michigan should be more concerned bout fixing its fucking drinking water problem!!!

          • Lizard

Maybe Michigan should have put this obvious serial rapist in jail for longer than six months.

          • Oscarlating Wildely

Maybe Michigan aught to pull its head out of its Great Lakes ass.

    • Lazycrockett

That judge should have his ass beat.

    • Ken M

He is still in jail though, right?

      • SoCalGal20

LMFAO. Read the article. He did 6 MONTHS in county jail for raping this girl and kidnapping her and her sister and friend. For his SECOND offense he got – wait for it – FOUR YEARS in jail.

        • AJ Drew

I get laughter over tears, but this story is horrifying. Cripes, the 12yo victim should be a GOP hero by their narrative: raped, didn’t abort, tried to support herself and baby… BUT… it apparently was when she finally tried to seek gov’t assistance that paternity testing was initiated and thus her rapist now has joint custody. W.T.F.

        • CottonBlimp

There are people who will be on a sex offender list all their lives just for getting caught pissing outside a bar, why the fuck is this guy getting off easy?

          • SoCalGal20

Friends or relatives in the county government? Also he’s a white guy. I don’t know.

      • AJ Drew

Ken, c’mon… she was 12yo, had the baby instead of aborting, and reading the linked article, apparently tried to find a way to support herself and baby, and it was only when she tried to get assistance (food stamps, whatever,) that the system actually initiated this outcome of “finding” the sperm donor (rapist). Awful in so many ways.

the rape victim’s family suggested abortion or giving the child up for adoption. She did neither.

“To her credit, she said she didn’t want the baby to be a victim, too,” said Kiessling. “She dropped out of school, went to live with relatives out of state and worked jobs to try and support herself.”

Chris [rapist] was notified of the paternity matter and an order of filiation was issued last month by the court saying he had joint legal custody and reasonable visitation privileges,” she said. “He never initiated this. It was something routinely done by the prosecutor’s office when a party makes application for state assistance.

While video games may-emphasis MAY-desensitize people to violence. There is no study that links video games to actual violence. I have worked in this business all my career, and the studies are more opinion and not controlled for other influences. On the other hand, there is a study called Killing Monsters that suggests that video game play can in fact release violent impulses. It’s not perfect, but Frothy is merely bringing out an old straw man to flap his gums.

    • Furface

And those studies re video games are basically retreads of crack pot ideas from the ’50s about comic books and delinquency that led to the Comic Authority Code in 1954.

  • Ken M
  • Raising_Rlyeh

Yes, I’m sure the mentally-ill sixty-four year old man played video games.

  • First of all, you motherfucking moron, there are people on the left who have a lot to say about video game violence. If he doesn’t know that it means he came up with this bullshit talking point without even bothering to google it. He’s either incredibly lazy or just lying. Given what we know about ol’ Frothy Mix it could be either or both.

All that said, while I do think some video games are too violent, unless someone shoots an Xbox out of a cannon, someone else’s video games are not going to hurt me. But some terrorist could open fire into a crowd where I just happen to be. Any one of us could have been at a gathering like the one in Las Vegas last week. It could happen again tomorrow and that’s what we’re all concerned about. Frothy wants to distract us from that which is why he is changing the subject to video games. And even that is bullshit because plenty of liberals have objected to the level of violence in video games, going so far as to get some of them stickered with parental warnings.

  • Blake J Butler

I have played some of the most violent video games ever released on the market, i play them because i enjoy their story and content. I have never felt compelled to kill an individual or individuals on consumption of video games and movies with some violent content. Video games have never played a role in directly killing others. People with mental health issues may find inspiration in violent video games and movies, but the same situation is the underlying issue of mental health and sick people being able to not get the help they need, and find ways to recreate a scenario they find to be fascinating.

As well as the access to allow for mentally ill, criminals to have access to firearms. The oblivious loopholes created a black market for firearms to be sold undetected without licensure check, all for the sake of how much money they would have made on their own instead of re-selling back to the gun store.

Firearms exist for one reason and one reason only, to kill. Video games and movies are entertainment value, that’s all their existence is, is to entertain. But there is an underlying issue that can lead to inspiration for mass shootings, but taking away access to violent video games and movies is censure as well as ineffective and will not take the problem away.

  • Friday

“Why don’t you go do something unpopular and irrelevant cause I say so, so we can continue making the gun violence problems worse directly for our Dominionist NRA masters?”

Yes, but I don’t think the graphic violence that young kids become inured to via violent video games is a good or healthy thing. I don’t think progressives should be giving the makers of those games a pass.

When the 13-year-old who plays “shoot-em-up” and “kill the cops” games day and night for eight years turns legal age, why should he not think it perfectly okay to own and use guns?

What a dolt this man is. Sure, the right will make a small concession on bump stocks, but it’s just obvious that if everyone wants to make a significant difference to reduce gun crimes and mass shootings, the answer is to censor video games and television shows. Be sure to ignore the fact that you can show people having their heads blown off during prime time, but it’s the end of the world is someone shows a tit. “and you never hear the left trying to go after Hollywood or the gaming market,” Santorum exclaimed. Gotta jam that partisan politicking in there. And Jesus H. Christ, how many fucking things is the left expected to go after at any one given time?!! We’re already making up for lost time on Weinstein because apparently we should have know and if we didn’t, as soon as the news broke, and people figured out who the hell he was, we should have storming the Capitol to demand his head on a platter. • Tom P

Gee, that mountain of evidence he cites? It concludes the EXACT OPPOSITE. The only people who think video games cause violent behavior are ideologues who do not want to rely on science.

If he wanted to argue that video games encourage people to lack empathy, which in turn might allow them to view others as disposable, then MAYBE he might be worth listening to. Of course, option 2 leads to the factoring in of the availability and prevalence of guns in certain subcultures, and, well, that would collapse his house of cards relying on a convenient media scapegoat.

    • another_steve

Please, no making excuses for the vultures who make money off of young people’s thirst for violent expression and behavior.

Allow me to do something I rarely do on JMG – which is to copy here a comment I posted elsewhere in this thread.
      ———————-

I don’t think the graphic violence that young kids become inured to via violent video games is a good or healthy thing. I don’t think progressives should be giving the makers of those games a pass.

      I’m not a sociologist or psychologist…but really…

Why should he not think it perfectly okay to own and use guns?

      • Lizard

Um…for the same reason that romance novels depicting obvious rape are sold in bookstores. It isn’t real. None of it is real. It is, at worst, a violent fantasy.

The vast, vast, vast majority of the people playing these games know perfectly well that the things they’re allowed to do in video games are illegal in real life, and they know why.

        • another_steve

Romance novels are targeted to adults, not children.

          Apples and oranges.

          • Lizard

But the core principle is the same. 13-year-olds playing video games are perfectly capable of understanding why what is allowed in the game is not allowed in real life.

I mean, do Pokemon games encourage real-life dogfighting? Does Cooking Mama teach young kids how to cook? Does Mario teach kids to bash their heads into bricks to find mushrooms? This rule is applied very selectively to FPS games.

          • another_steve

I think young and susceptible kids take their cues from pop culture. From what’s presented to them as “in” or “cool.” If you and all your friends spend hours every day seeking out and killing cops, it must be a cool thing to do that.

Re the “studies” to the contrary referenced in the comment above, I need to know, first and foremost, whether one penny or one second of time belonging to the video game industry went into those studies.

If so, the studies’ conclusions are worth zero.

          • Lizard

What I resent about these arguments is that it’s yet another iteration of “Lol, those stupid Millennials. Can’t they tell the difference between flesh-and-blood humans and a bunch of ones and zeros?” Believe me, we can.

There’s a huge leap in logic between thinking killing a fictional character in a video game is okay and killing an actual person is okay. And again, just FPS games? Where are all those young impressionable kids betting on dog fights because they grew up playing Pokemon?

          • another_steve

Lizard, I’m talking about young kids. Very young kids. I assume kids today start playing these video games that glorify guns and violence and death as early as age 9 or so. Who knows…maybe younger.

            Very young kids, Lizard.

          • Tom P

Ever play “cops & robbers” when you were a kid?

          • another_steve

            Absolutely.

But it didn’t involve the violent graphic glorification and “scoring of points” for massacring other human beings.

          • Lizard

You know that video games have ratings, right? They have ratings that affect what games a kid of a certain age can buy. Many FPSs are rated “M,” meaning that the content is suitable only for people aged 17 and up. So unless these games are being given to them by adults who have explicitly bought the game for them, no, 9-year-olds are not playing these games.

Grand Theft Auto V, for example, is rated M. Much like romance novels or rated-R movies, it is intended explicitly for adults. So are the most recent Call of Duty games. These games are not intended for children.

          • another_steve

Lol. And no minors are smoking cigarettes or drinking booze either.

            Love you 😉

          • Lizard

I saw a kid who couldn’t have been older than 8 when I saw Deadpool in theaters. That movie was very obviously intended for adults with a rating to match. Is it the movie’s fault a little kid saw it, or the parent’s fault for bringing the kid to a movie that was clearly not intended for him? And I don’t see anyone pouncing on trying prohibition again.

Look, it’s one thing to make the argument that young people are being innured to violent imagery, but it’s erroneous to assume that there’s no regulation on who has access to that imagery. A 9-year-old can’t walk into a GameStop and buy Grand Theft Auto V. It’s not a thing. It doesn’t happen.

Also, games are expensive as shit. I wish I had that much pocket money when I was 9!

          • another_steve

All you need as a 9 year old is a legal age sibling, cousin or friend.

If you have that, you’re good to go when it comes to obtaining any product under the sun.

          • Eli Bradley

            Las Vegas shooter was 64.

Mass shooters do tend to be between 20 to 49, but I’m guessing that more young men play video games than those that become mass shooters.

          • Tom P

Actually, we all take our cues from pop culture. Wanna know our biggest and earliest influencers? Parents and family.

Violent people tend to learn to be violent via a combination of biological factors and social cues. You know that old canard about blaming the parents? It is often true.

          • another_steve

I agree. We most certainly take cues from the adults who raise us.

I’m a big believer in the ability of pop culture to influence our beliefs and actions.

Know who the single-most influential person in the history of the U.S. LGBT civil rights struggle has been and is today?

            Ellen Degeneres.

          • Tom P

There is a long history of research into media affecting behavior (or not) that started decades before video games were ever imagined. Anyone who looks into the actual science can see evidence of influence but not causation. Before, it was TV cartoons, or comic books, or films, or dime novels, or that devil rock & roll music, etc. Lather, rinse, repeat…and keep ignoring the other elephants in the room.

      • ultragreen

As violent video games have become more popular through the years, the violent crime rate in the US has gone down, not up. The empirical evidence doesn’t support the link between video games and violence.

        • another_steve

I attribute the decline in violent crime to more forceful and effective policing techniques.

The same thing would happen if they were ever dumb enough to ban porn on the internet, except it would involve older males too.

Did a video game inspire the Las Vegas shooter?
Did a video game inspire the Pulse shooter?
Did a video game inspire the San Bernadino shooter?
Did a video game inspire the Sandy Hook shooter?
Did a video game inspire the Aurora shooter?

    SIT THE EFF DOWN FROTHY

  • Rick James Brown

Of course. Because so many people ARE MURDERED…by video games.

  • Rebecca Gardner

Maybe because my XBOX One version of Doom didn’t just mow down 100’s of people, killing 59 of them and injuring over 500 hundred more. Typical Republican, Nut Job, Specious, Illogical “thinking.”

Always remember that Pennsylvania, not a very blue State, rejected Santorum by over 700,000 votes when he sought reelection and his opponent was the charismaticly challenged Robert Casey.

  • Renfield

I’m confused. Is Santorum wearing the blue or red dress?

    • grada3784

Without looking, I’d say he was the demon with the blue dress on.

  • BlindBill

so he is saying that the shooter was the victim of early age computer games? how old was that shooter?

    • SDG

      64?

When did someone use a video game to kill ?

    • The_Wretched

The only way to stop a bad guy with a video game is a good guy with a video game.

Here a twelve year old child killed a much beloved middle school teacher and wounded another student before killing himself on the middle school playground a few years back.

He’d been playing video games no twelve year old should be playing.

He’d also been taking Prozak, and got his hands on the family gun.

By all accounts, he was a sweet kid, It shouldn’t have happened. It still fucking haunts me, and driving by the playground still fucks me all up.

He was failed by so many people and agencies, the guilt of the tragedy just eats away at everybody here, years later.

Yet simply requiring households with children to lock guns up could have prevented this. Having simple minimal regulations could very well have delayed access sufficiently long enough to make a difference.

If you want to break your own heart, look up his suicide notes. Or don’t –
maybe you’ll find them TOO relateable, like I do.

The game correlation was disproved almost 15 years ago.

  • The_Wretched

the retired accountant was a FPS gamer?

  • Kevin Perez

Seriously? Estes Kefauver went after Comic Books! Liberal politicians have no problem regulating made-up problems too.

“Why Don’t Liberals Go After Video Games Instead Of People’s Guns?” ‘Cause nobody ever killed 58 people with Ms. Pac-Man. Idiot.

I have been a video gamer since I was introduced to Pong. I have watched the video game industry go from two straight lines bouncing a square dot around to 4k reenactments of WWII. I have played everything from simple puzzle games to Call of Duty. I have hours on end invested in a video game that has me running around the galaxy killing aliens and humans alike to save the universe. If there was a candidate eligible for brainwashing by the mass produced video games I would be that person. Know what I’m not driven to do? I’m not driven to commit mass murder. I’m not driven to kill anyone for that matter. I am a peaceful person who has never started a fight, though I have fought to defend myself. This bullshit smoke screen is just that, a bullshit smoke screen. It has been proven that video games have no more to do with violence in this country than Warner Bros cartoons. I love how it’s all about ANYTHING but getting control of 3% of this country that feels the need to surround themselves with guns to protect themselves from an invisible boogy man.

  • RJ Bone

Hell, it could be argued that violent video games contribute to the population.

They give jobs to designers and if you check the credits of a lot of games they usually have a section called Production Babies. I’ve seen some of those with double digit numbers.

But until the world becomes Ender’s Game, I think playing Battlefield isn’t going to actually kill anyone.
