Trump Again Threatens War With North Korea

Reuters reports:

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday said “only one thing will work” in dealing with North Korea after previous administrations had talked to Pyongyang without results.

Trump did not make clear to what he was referring, but his comments seemed to be a further suggestion that military action was on his mind.

Earlier this week, during a meeting with top U.S. military leaders and their spouses, Trump told reporters it was the “calm before the storm.” Asked for clarification then on what he meant, Trump said: “You’ll find out.”

This is what “or bust” looks like.

  • MonochromeMouse

Anyone willing to follow orders and go to war with North Korea for this fat dumb bastard needs to be dishonorably discharged and charged with treason by the next administration.

    • Todd20036

You don’t need to go to war. All Twitler has to do is to push a button.

      • MonochromeMouse

Technically he would have to make a phone call, to someone who makes another phone call, to a secret location where several people would have to locate the target twitler tells them to hit and arm and launch the nuclear missiles. So there would be blood on many people’s hands, not just the participation trophy president’s.

        • Jay Mills

It’s really quite easy (frighteningly so) for him to do it. The subordinates down the line are trained to obey without question. All he needs to do is verify his identity to the Football with his verification codes on the Biscuit he carries at all times. Then, he choose from a menu of options, partial, total, or selective destruction of our “enemies”. It is his decision alone.

  • He’s insane. And we’re months past when the 25th Amendment should have been invoked.

Not to mention long overdue for an impeachment.

    • Just imagine: We all could wake up tomorrow to find out we’re already in a nuclear war.

      • Treant

Or worse, not wake up tomorrow because scattered, ionized atoms can’t really be considered “awake” or “asleep.”

        • Perhaps. Unlike during the Cold War though, where it was worldwide annihilation, this is more likely to start off small and then grow.

We’d probably have a few days.

Americans are not rioting in the streets, so the administration can be forgiven for thinking that what Trump does is OK with them. His approval ratings are low, but what does that really do – not much. As long as the country continues to function, no matter what foolish or dangerous or dishonest thing he does, there is really no downside for him.

      • David Walker

Speaking of not rioting in the streets but peaceful assembly, 45’s fuck buddy is not all that well-liked. Someone said today is Pooty’s birthday, and this is how some chose to celebrate…by demanding a fair and honest election. Yeah…right… The pictures are sufficient:

        https://www.novayagazeta.ru/articles/2017/10/07/74110-nerazreshennyy-miting-gulyaniya-zaderzhaniya-fotografii?utm_source=push

I do hope the scientific/computer savvy citizens of this country are figuring out how to fuck their elections, only so non-Pooty people get elected.

      • BJORN RAGNVALDR

It’s not actually functioning though, if not for career civil servants stepping in, making decisions and holding it all together, everything fails because the people in power aren’t accomplishing a damn thing.

        • marshlc

The power is on, people are getting up and going to work in the morning – most Americans seem to be unhappy with the administration, but that’s all, just unhappy. For most, their daily lives are not particularly worse than a year ago. And that’s why, I think, that most of the anti-Trump energy goes into making unflattering cartoons and memes, rather than expressing outrage in a way that would actually drive some change.

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

            Can’t argue with that.

      • another_steve

The horrors that have come out of this monstrous and illegitimate administration to date are child’s play compared to if and when the orange monster gets to appoint a Supreme Court justice to replace Kennedy or one of the four progressives on the court.

That’s when our American democracy will truly be on the line. That’s when riots in the street will need to begin.

That’s when Congress will have to be shut down. Row after row after row of bodies, day after day, blocking the doors. Preventing the Republican-controlled Senate from doing its work.

        • JackFknTwist

That should have happened long ago. Barcelona and Madrid have the courage of their convictions, they are on the streets albit for opposing points of view.
Here what has to happen before the people mobilise ?

  • Treant

Well, if it involves work on Dump’s part, we know it won’t happen. Besides, he’s already forgotten the nuclear codes and has to wait for Ivanka to find the cheat sheet she probably hid in a shoe somewhere.

    • thatotherjean

      Where would they go?

  • SoCalGal20

And I’m going to blame @Jack and Twitter for not fucking shuttting down his account months ago. (Not to mention letting Russion bots run rampant and doing fuck all about it)

    • I’ve flagged his tweets, not that it’ll do anything. ‘Threatening harm against another’ as the reason.

Trying to goad a war into happening seems an apt description.

      • MonochromeMouse

twitter has some stupid rule that it’s up to YOU to do the admin’s job for them and investigate any account you report. They won’t do shit until you show them multiple examples of the account breaking the rules and even then they still don’t do shit but make up excuses and suggest you block or mute them most of the time.

        • Tomcat

The Russians used it during the campaign to stop Hillary people.

          • MonochromeMouse

Reporting alone doesn’t do anything. you could report a tweet that breaks a major rule and brags about it and you’ll get an email saying that they need you to give them more information before they can take action against the account. The reason the trolls could do it is they tend to be many people maintaining one bot account, so they can have all the shit they need all saved or made up and ready to send out.

          • Tomcat

They bombarded twitter with complaints of porn and got some people off foe a while until twitter could review all the tweets. SAW IT ON MSNBC RACHEL she don’t lie.

          • MonochromeMouse

Wow, that’s even worse, Twitter cares more about the possibility of porn than they do about threats of terrorism and harassment.

    • cheakamus

I’ve never joined Twitter and am the first to admit I don’t totally understand how it works. But I do think it possible for Trump eventually to ruin their brand so that everyone dumps Twitter virtually overnight. A pipe dream?

      • SoCalGal20

I actually LIKE twitter because I follow a bunch of quality reporters and news sites. But as with anything social media it’s easy to abuse and Twitter does fuck all about it. It’s one of the reasons nobody wants to buy them.

    • Galvestonian

Yeah … but counting the number of dead on our side will be higher ’cause you just know that anybody with a nuke is gonna be throwing it at us, just to get a piece of the U.S. (radioactive or not) after the dying is done and everyone that glows in the dark is croaked.

  • Jukesgrrl

I hope no one is surprised by this. During the campaign he said, several times, that there was no reason to have nuclear weapons if we weren’t going to use them. He sounded then as if he would look for someone to use them on. Now he’s picked his target and he can’t wait to push the button so he can feel like a big man. And he’s far to stupid to understand what that action will unleash all over the world.

    • ChrisInKansas

“Sorry, but only one thing will work!”

    There he goes again.

Purposefully putting out messages that can be taken any number of ways. Another favorite Trolling tactic of his is the oft’ said “We’ll see.”

I actually think this elementary-school playground way of communicating is masturbation to him. Throwing crap out there and getting a kick out of the reaction. Akin to some sort of sick….game.

Problem is, the media takes to it like sharks after chum. And he giggles with glee, wets himself, waits a bit then picks out a “triggered something response” to it and then runs with that.

The chat rooms I’ve visited who are pro Trump actually commend him for doing these things – as if there’s nothing better to do than throw out mixed messages for the fun of it. I’d never have thought in a million years that a sitting President of the United States of America would not only actually get a kick out of fucking with peoples’ minds, but would be wholeheartedly supported for doing so!

Sorry you can’t deal with things outside of your echo chamber.

          • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Is your echo chamber any different?

          • I love dim sum

Yes, it relies on facts and evidence, not talking points from Peter Daou and Correct the Record.

          • JT

Your feces are not facts and your smegma is not evidence.

          • I love dim sum

Come on, if you are going to insult me, do a better job…..that’s just a cringy effort.

          • JT

Nothing is more cringe inducing than your fetid presence.

          • Bad Tom

            Rote,

          • I love dim sum

You are really making yourself look really really simple, but trying too hard to be clever.

          • Bad Tom

            Another non-sequitur.
            ——-
Forcing lousy AIs off script outs them.

          • Mike_in_the_Tundra

The Repugs are very good at that. A new point comes out and it is immediate parroted by every Repug. I admire that. I don’t agree with talking points however.

Sorry guys, I won’t feed any more trolls today.

          • I love dim sum

I’m not a Republican though so your argument fails. I voted Democratic, until last year, and then I started voting Green Party because I couldn’t take the corruption and hypocrisy of Hillary supporters any more.

          • Lars Littlefield

            Troll.

          • Bad Tom

            Rote.

          • Bad Tom

            Non sequitur. -5 points.

The echo is inside your empty head.

          • Bad Tom

Hmmm. You might be a poorly written Perl script.

You haven’t shown any response that isn’t rote.

Show me something OUTSIDE THE BOX! Give it a whirl. Convince me your a REAL HUMAN BEING.

Because I don’t think you are.

          • I love dim sum

Please learn how to insult better, since that’s all Hillary supporters can do.

          • Bad Tom

YES! YES! Non sequitur. -50 points.

          • I love dim sum

Here’s a non sequitur: I’m never voting Democratic ever again, and people are leaving the party in droves due to Hillary supporters like you.

          • Bad Tom

            What’s 5 times 7?

          • Bad Tom

          • Bad Tom

You are taking AGES of computer time to process elementary school math questions. You’re taking a long time for even a lowly human being.

You need to ask your programmers for a significant upgrade. My corporation could help you; I write AIs for a living.

          • I love dim sum

Good grief, I really ruffled your feathers, I guess…..

          • Bad Tom

            I wonder why?

Not particularly, I mean, you seem like kind of a weirdo…..

          • Bad Tom

Here’s my analysis of your sorry, worthless ass.
Take this back to your Masters, and I’ll send them a bill!

            Target:
Rile up Hillary supporters for chuckles, apparently.

            Main heuristics:
            Transaction per comment.
Static reaction database w/ phrase substitution.
Keyword / phrase match and capture.

            Effectiveness: Scale of 1..5
            2

            Summary:
            Pretty goddamn fucking lame.

          • Bad Tom

You can’t even answer the one Siri gets.

          • Clive Johnson

So, you hop on here making a ludicrous claim, the correction to which would require someone going out of their way to write potentially many paragraphs correcting all the mistakes in your claim and assumptions. It’s easier to just get to the point with an ad hominem.

          • I love dim sum

It’s not a ludicrous claim, it’s completely on the mark, and you know it.

          • Clive Johnson

If your writing is any indication, you also think in crude terms. How could I possibly disabuse you of your errors?

          • Lars Littlefield

            You are a troll.

          • Bad Tom

            You have no truth.
But trolling is annoying. Which is why you do it.
You might want to reflect on why you’ve chosen to be a griefer.

            It’s not a noble choice.

          • I love dim sum

I think Hillary supporters are the griefers, I cannot believe how naive they are and then they get hyperbolic and aggressive when you try to reason with them.

          • Bad Tom

Luv the appropriation and attempted flip script!
            It failed.

            You are a caution!
            Bless your heart.

          • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Speaking of which, does anybody know why I can no longer block people?

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

If disqus is like Facebook, each profile has a limit to the number of users who can block them. Once that profile has hit that limit there’s not much to do besides report the content of their posts, and tell that person to fuck off.

          • Bad Tom

You could also unblock some profiles that might no longer be necessary, such as some of the spammers. That could help.

Each platform has to choose some limits for lists of anything whatever. It’s a software necessity.

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

Blocked. I co-sign your suggestion. Russia’s running amok all over social media today, it seems.

          • Scout

Blocked. Thanks for the common sense advice.

        • Ken M

Why does Hillary still need supporters? Her position (not in the WH) isn’t going to change

          • I love dim sum

That’s a great question, but there’s still some people who worship Hillary like shes the leader of a religious cult.

          • JAKvirginia

Don’t throw the word “cult” around, Trumpist

          • I love dim sum

          • JAKvirginia

And so are we. See? We CAN agree on something.

          • I love dim sum

That’s great. Just don’t be inconsistent and be like “Hmmph, I’m glad you’re gone!” and then do a 180 and claim I’m a “traitor that needs to get back in line”

          • JAKvirginia

Not from me, sweetie. Buh bye.

          • Ken M

Some isn’t enough to do what you claim. If Trump was going to war, he wouldn’t be grinning and stupidly half ass suggesting something.

        • Lars Littlefield

No. You are not correct. You are a troll. It’s really quite simple. A troll.

        • Bad Tom

We don’t want a war with Russia.
But they need to stop fucking with our elections.

We don’t want a war with North Korea.
It would be pointless and massively destructive for everyone.

          Neither position is inconsistent.
          ——-
As if I can speak for everyone. But, what the fuck, you pretend you can.

    • Clive Johnson

      That’s utterly deluded and confused.

      • I love dim sum

Wrong, it’s a completely correct observation.

        • Ross

          I agree that it’s a completely correct observation…

…to an utterly deluded and confused person.

          • I love dim sum

Most people I’m around think the Russia conspiracy nonsense is a complete joke that the DNC concocted to deflect from it’s fundamental corruption issues.

          • Lars Littlefield

That’s understandable since you live in an institution.

          • Ross

Yes, dear, but the people around you are in the same insane asylum as you.

          • I love dim sum

So the entire US is an insane asylum? Sure thing.

          • Ross

The fact that you would even ask such question proves…that you are insane.

          • I love dim sum

No, it proves that you are in a tiny social bubble/echo chamber that believes in Alex Jones grade conspiracy theories like this Putin nonsense.

          • Canadian Observer

You are just now coming to realize that? You should have asked the neighbours, we figured it out years ago.

          • I love dim sum

Uh, Trudeau isn’t much better, considering his weapons deals with Saudi Arabia and shady petroleum pipeline deals. He’s a pretty face hiding a lot of filth and corruption.

    • MBear

      LOL

      • Lars Littlefield

Next it will be claiming Alex Jones is god. Wait for it.

        • I love dim sum

Um, the Russia red-baiting conspiracy that you guys believe in sounds like it came straight from Alex Jones’ show. I think Alex Jones is a complete clown.

Yet the Putin conspiracy nonsense seems to be popular around here.

        • Ross

          It?

          Nice.

I seriously think it is an it. Not a person at all. Ersatz.

    • Ross

      So you’re back

      From outer space

I just walked in to find you here with that sad look upon your face

I should have changed that stupid lock

I should have made you leave your key

If I’d known for just one second you’d be back to bother me

Go on now, go, walk out the door, just turn around now

      ‘Cause you’re not welcome anymore

We all already got a good grip of Trump’s military credentials when he ordered that Yemen raid earlier in the year, the one that Obama decided not to go ahead with because the risks were greater than any potential gains. The raid that killed a US soldier, killed a US citizen, killed at least a dozen other civilians and led to Yemen barring any and all other military operations on their territory by the US military.
The target of the raid wasn’t even in the compound to be captured. Because fuck US intelligence reports, Trump wanted a big event he could point to and say how much more of a “man” he is than Obama.

    • thatotherjean

Nonono. He wants to move men and tiny ships around the big map and order people around and blow stuff up and declare victory. You can still do that with bone spurs.

O/T: How Facebook Helped Elect Trump

Trump campaign operative Brad Parscale told CBS News that Facebook was the crucial tool that helped elect Donald Trump: “Twitter is how Trump talked to the people, Facebook was going to be how he won.”

“Parscale says the campaign would average 50-60,000 different ad versions every day, some days peaking at 100,000 separate iterations – changing design, colors, backgrounds and words – all in an effort to refine ads and engage users.”

Also interesting: “Parscale received help utilizing Facebook’s technology from Facebook employees provided by the company who showed up for work to his office multiple days a week.”

  • Treant

OT: Check your medical bills carefully.

For the second time just this month, another one is wrong. I went to the cardiologist (I’m fine, as usual), gave them my new insurance information, and just received the bill for $140. Which should be $40.

Poking around, they billed it under my old insurance, which is not valid any longer. I’ll call Monday to straighten them out.

Having worked in a not very well-off hospital, they do this “by accident-on purpose” on smaller bills because around 10% of people will simply pay it. Many are old and don’t know to check the bills. Yes, it’s fraud. Yes, they know that. But because they have a plausible excuse that stands up in court, they continue to do it over and over again.

    • Bryan

They try it on my family often, although in our case it might just be pharmacist incompetence. Doesn’t work, just causes an inconvenience.

    • NowAnAgnostic

That practice has been going on for years.

    • 2guysnamedjoe

One of the local walk-in clinics always includes a $100 “evening – weekend – holiday” charge, even for weekday afternoon visits (my insurer always rejects it). They’ve also tried to bill me for the amount of the Medicare adjustment (usually around $150) in addition to the $20 copay. And they also tried to charge me $20 up front for a flu shot that my plan covers 100%.
So, yes, always check your bills.

  • billbear1961
  • Ken M

OK…Check this out. Just read an article raising a very interesting point regarding Trump’s potential use of Nuclear arms without direct provocation. Without provocation meaning we shoot before they do. The process of the use of the weapons usually takes at least 72 hours without an emergency situation. U.S. weapons in other countries can be requested ie Germany. It is the option of that country whether or not they want them used. The truly interesting point here however, is the best/primary way to stop Trump is for Congress to invoke the 25 Amendment, Article 4. If, by his desired actions (use of the nuclear weapons) he is found Disabled and “Unfit to Execute the Duties of his Office.” His duties meaning sound, safe, and proper usage of nuclear weapons in secondary defense of the US. He can be impeached. Now wouldn’t that be interesting. In either case he can do nothing without support from the secretary of defense, James Mattis. Mattis isn’t against war. He is however against nuclear usage and the imminent destruction caused.

    • thatotherjean

Thank you. That, at least, is good news.

    • Treant

If we’re reliant on Mattis’ good will, intellect, and sense, we are well and truly fucked up the ass sideways by a large bunch of plantains wrapped in barbed wire and soaked in vinegar and salt.

      • thatotherjean

“Mad Dog” or not, he probably doesn’t want to die for nothing in particular, any more than the rest of us so.

        • Treant

He won’t, he’s got a nice secure bunker that’s got years of food and water.

With Trump. Now that’s like something out of Sartre. But still, he won’t die. Just several billion others.

      • Ken M

        You’re quite welcome

    • Aye, folks do forget there is indeed a two-man rule for using nuclear weapons—the President and SecDef are the primaries. Secondaries are designated in case either of those are missing or incapacitated.

It’s been speculated Donald *could* try to fire Mattis if the consent isn’t given, but honestly at that point I’m thinking we might finally see a coup and/or 25th Amendment invocation.

      • Ken M

Well, knowing his love for terminations…we can always cross our fingers. Invoking the 25th would give him a historical first.

“Asked for clarification then on what he meant, Trump said: “You’ll find out.””

I get the feeling this is nothing more than ‘look at me’ fluff. When other news takes the headlines, be it scandals or natural disasters Trump says anything and everything possible to be the centre of attention again. If he hadn’t given his cabinet ministers permission to rob from the taxpayer by taking luxury flights literally everywhere they want to go, the story would not even exist to be making headlines, Trump would not be saying this garbage.

    • Mark_in_MN

I hope you’re right about this being self-aggrandizing fluff. I’m not so sure, but I do hope you’re right.

It’s hard to watch a country allow itself to be destroyed, and by such obvious SCUM.

It’s also awkward for me to DEMAND you all protest in the streets to stop Dump and his GOP-backed coup. Very easy for ME to demand protests while I watch from Montreal!

I can’t just leave, but I can’t carry on the way I have been, either, as I watch you slowly destroyed.

It’s like watching the Titanic sink–there’s NOTHING you can do about it.

(Of course, the REAL tragedy is that something CAN be done about it–massive and relentless protests can stop what’s happening, truly put the fear of GOD into these gangsters, but I don’t think you’ll do it. You can’t rely on the corporate press, and you’re getting no REAL leadership from the Democrats. And you’re slowly letting Trump stack the courts with criminal FANATICS.)

          • AJ Drew

Well, I’ll say again that if you need some time away, take it. I did, still am, really, other than some upvotes and posting some silly gifs and occasional comments. But there’s no other site quite like JMG that allows (encourages even?) OT posts and because of that it’s a rare forum for such sharing in many ways… news before the MSM reports it, tips about gardening and food and so much more. (Classical music… ahem, yes and thank you.)

As for DT, we’re on it, many of us are. It’s exhausting, truly, but faith in the tenets of our gov’t, and DT’s most probable implosion keep us going… with some self-care breaks.

  • I love dim sum

I’m surprised the DNC hasn’t started accusing North Korea of hacking the elections yet so they can manufacture consent for more war.

The DNC has accused North Korea of hacking the elections so they can manufacture consent for more war!

Oh silly, people are only accusing the Russians, those actually guilty of interfering in our election

      • I love dim sum

Except there’s zero evidence of that….however, there is evidence of the DNC making up the lie that Russia hacked the election to distract from how corrupt they are.

        • billbear1961

The Russians bought ads on FB to influence the election, you lying asshole.

Where is this “evidence” the DNC lied about the Russians?

I always liked the Barbarini Faun (if I remember the name correctly). I was never drawn to weapons and I grew up in the woods, so, I guess my attraction to it makes sense.

        • billbear1961

I’ve come to despise guns, mainly because of the way they’ve been fetishized and worshiped in the States.

I dislike sports, too, because of the way they were FORCED on us when we were boys. “Love it–excel at them–or there’s something wrong with you!” FUCK the bastards!

          • easygoingmister

Sports. Sigh. I went off to all-boys school my 7th grade year and didn’t know any rules for any sports. Fun times.

          • Todd20036

I was such a klutz I never could play well at sports ball.

Eventually, took a physical fitness class, which consisted of lifting weights, in sophomore year of high school, and that’s all it took.

          • billbear1961

In high school, one of the sports hunks I always suspected of being gay noticed, at one point, I was starting to put on muscle from modest weight-lifting, and my chest was getting broader. I said something ironic to him–I can’t remember what–but thought, “Oh, you noticed that, did you? Good for you.”

It’s funny that for someone as starchy as I am, I have always, nevertheless, despised conformity.

          • greenmanTN

I was very nonconformist, though mostly subtle about it, more in thought and word than in overt outward appearance.

As for being a virgin, I don’t see why that should be a problem, unless it makes you unhappy.

More Shit Trump is up to. Also I feel sorry for SNAP recipients though I admit I don’t for the ones who voted for Dump and/or do the hypocritical shit of “My SNAP benefits are merited, everybody else’s is not.”

    http://www.newsweek.com/under-trumps-new-budget-if-you-dont-work-you-dont-eat-republicans-are-kicking-679749

“UPDATE: The budget resolution passed by the House on Thursday will push millions of already struggling people off food stamps, leaving the neediest Americans—children and the elderly among them—without food.

The $4.1-trillion budget will take over $150 billion away from several poverty programs, including the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), which helps low-income people keep food on the table, by giving them small amounts of supplemental money to spend on groceries—anywhere from $100 a month to $700 a month for a family of five, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.”

      • Ken M

It is stereotypically. An “urban” thing. If they write articles and use lines like “previously known as Food Stamps,” the eyes will roll and people will be saying it’s about time.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

Why do they vote GOP then? It’s hard to feel for their devastation when they refuse to blame the perp and blame us instead?

        • UrsusArctos

Because: black people. The GOP has used race to get poor/middle class whites to vote against their interest by making getting ahead a zero-sum game. By turning groups that SHOULD have similar interests against each other they have been expanding Nixon’s “Southern Strategy” nationwide and winning doing it.

Oh Jesus, poor shellback, That was one of the hardest things I had ever done, I quit cold turkey and every day was pure hell, filled ashtrays tempted me, i went thru all my coats hoping to find a partial pack of cigs, I even found my hands reaching for a pack of cigs that weren’t there involuntarily … it was spooky. I think it wasn’t until my 8th month that I could fully relax and I learned quickly that even one cigarette could put me back – I went to a concert in a Tux with a girl ( a relative that needed a hot guy in a tux for the night ) and she was in a couture designer dress ( for her job ) and of course her clutch handbag was so small that I had to carry her cigs … part of the show was us back stage with several other women in couture outfits and their escorts for cocktails – yeah you guessed it – she asked me to light her cigarette and Man of frickin’ man I was hooked with just one puff — it took me another 3 years to get off them again — DO NOT SMOKE ANOTHER CIGARETTE – you know if you’ve tried to quit that they are a drug and you were hooked – remember the pain – yes PAIN – that accompanied your attempt ( & hopefully success ) at trying to quit.

      Good Luck…

I’m sure Dumpy has dreams of finishing that off in a weekend.

Perhaps carpet bombing with nukes would take care of all that. Perhaps not. Idiots like him think a nuclear bomb means automatic destruction of anything. Bury it deep enough and it won’t care.

You can just imagine who would be nuking us out of existence if the orange creamsickle dropped a big one on ‘rocketman’. I mean even Mexico would be moving in on California, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas while Canada would take back a few of the Northern tier States while Cuba and Russia would nail the entire East coast and China would open up the rest of the country — Japan would make a grab for everything else in the Pacific including Hawaii. We’d end up as a couple of pages on Wikipedia.

    • Tomcat

It was a great run anyway. Had some rough times and some good times, but trump made us GRAAAAATE.

    • Treant

We’d see it coming, launch ourselves, and game over.

It’s been said that the planetary climate would be temporarily destroyed by about 100 nukes striking major cities (it would probably take more during the winter in the Northern Hemisphere). We’d probably pass 10 times that in the first fifteen minutes.

      Send Putin to a gulag.

    • ultragreen

It appears Russia is becoming polarized too. People in the larger cities hate Putin, but he retains strong support in smaller cities and rural areas, especially among older Russians. Does this sound familiar?

      • Leo

Eh, no. I think he’s generally feared and hated everywhere, just more so in cities. They can’t say that in polls though otherwise they’ll get the polonium, sniper rifle shot or gulag. Hence the 80% approval.

        • ultragreen

Based on the books that I have read about contemporary Russia, Putin remains popular outside of the major cities, like St. Petersburg and Moscow.

          • Leo

Ok, yeah. Willing to put up with totalitarianism as opposed to going hungry. Same playbook, different generation.

          • ultragreen

Well, considering that Yeltsin preceded Putin, and the economy in Russia went into a complete freefall during 1990s, the improvement in Russia’s economy during the 2000s made Putin look good.

Although his popularity waned somewhat when oil prices collapsed, he managed to increase his popularity again by intervening in the Ukraine and annexing Crimea to Russia. Like the US, war has a tendency to increase the popularity of national leaders as long as the body count is not too high.

Congress already took away Trump’s ability to unilaterally declare war and initiate hostilities toward another country. Those military generals in his administration have an obligation to make sure that Trump follows the law.

    • safari

There are so many things to worry about in that article.

    • Leo

There’s a Scott Walker connection here. There has to be.

      • safari

The AP reports that Regents President John Robert Behling told the board before Friday’s vote that adopting the policy ahead of the legislation shows “a responsiveness to what’s going on in the Capitol, which helps build relationships.”

Republican Gov. Scott Walker appointed all but two of the board’s 18 members.

        • Leo

          You beat me finishing it.

      • ultragreen

        Of course.

    • Tomcat

      UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!!!

    • Ken M

I guess the first question would be how to VERY clearly define protest?

    • ultragreen

It will probably be challenged in the Federal courts by the ACLU and possibly other organizations. Several red states have already passed these anti-protest bills. The anti-protest bill stalled in the Wisconsin Senate, so the Board of Regents (appointed largely by Scott Walker) became tired of waiting and decided to pass their own anti-protest edict. I suspect that the university administration is hostile toward it, however, and this anti-protest edict will be enforced sparingly.

      • djcoastermark

You forgot to add, “This anti protest edict will be enforced sparingly,” – For The Right Types Of Protests.

The problem is that the republican packed congress will give Dotard the ability to start a war with NK.

Guys, someone posted this last night on Political Wire:

Looks like Mueller team making a move. I hear Kelly was briefed.

    Michael Del Moro @MikeDelMoro
ABC News: Robert Mueller’s team met behind closed doors today w an unknown group of attorneys & chief judge of US District Court in DC

More info on the Chief Judge of the US District Court of DC Beryl A. Howell

    …………………………………………………………………

Has anyone HERE heard anything about this today??

    • SoCalGal20

Nope, but it could explain Trump’s psychotic behavior.

      • billbear1961

I figured some of you sleuths might be able to find out more!

      • boobert

His mental health was damaged many years ago.

      • ultragreen

Trump’s behavior has always been rather psychotic. Is it becoming worse?

        • TampaDink

Multiple threats/hints via twitter that he plans to nuke N. Korea, it certainly seems to be getting worse. Maybe it is because he is aware of how close the investigation is getting to dropping the hammer on him & his administration. Or maybe he’s putting more outrageous tweets out in hopes of Mueller hurrying up…before he has time to cross every T & dot every i.

    • safari

No more than what you posted

    • Treant

We covered it yesterday, it’s fluff news. The attorneys are not named. Charges have not been filed. It’s unknown whether lunch was served, but if it was, Mueller billed the American public for it.

It’s just another leak to keep you away from the torches and pitchforks unless and until something actually comes of it shortly.

      • Tomcat

So in other words you don’t know?

        • Treant

So in other words you’re fooled every time this crap is breathlessly released?

          • Tomcat

No body has been fooled yet so chill out a little.

          • Treant

            No.

          • Silver Badger

I’m with you there, Trent. It’s time for Mueller to put out or get a real job.

          • Treant

Tell me about it. I kind of expect him to keep those sweet billable hours rolling until next October, yell, “HE’S TOTALLY CLEAN!” just before the election, and leave the country on an extended “vacation.”

          • Reality.Bites

Fools get fooled. That’s how you know they’re fools

          • Silver Badger

          • Treant

…and I’ll just spit. Fool me twice…well, I know the signs by then, so that won’t happen.

        • Leo

No one “knows”. It’s rumors flying on Twitter from the usual suspects. Mensch/Taylor have been screaming about sealed indictments since March from their ‘sources’.

      • billbear1961

        🙁

I think we should ALREADY be marching, to show Mueller and the entire Establishment we WILL defend the Republic (said the bear, from Montreal).

        • Treant

I’m about a third convinced that Mueller has been threatened off or bought off. I’m around a third convinced that Mueller is simply being used as a weapon to manipulate Trump (see conjecture #1) by the Republican party to keep him relatively boondoggled. I’m one-sixth convinced that Mueller will drag this out for years to keep those paychecks coming. And I’m one-sixth convinced he’s actually doing his job.

          • billbear1961

You have as little faith in his team, T?

You believe ALL those expert lawyers and sleuths will keep silent about Mueller if he has sold out and isn’t really doing his job?

If so, the fate of the Republic depends on US!!

          • Treant

“Nice family you’ve got. I can get a gram of polonium-210 tomorrow.”

And when the boss is covering something up, it’s kind of hard to tell if you don’t have access to the records. Mueller is a lot things. Stupid is not one of those things.

I’ll look forward to being pleasantly surprised, but I’m not going to be at all shocked to find he did nothing.

          • Silver Badger

Yep. Lets hope for the surprise. SOON, or it may be too late.

          • Leo

Well he’d have to be doing a fantastic job fooling everyone, including the roughly 8 or 9 lawyers working for him that donated quite hefty sums to Hillary…

          • Treant

I never said he was stupid.

          • Leo

Not suggesting you did or that he is.

          • SoCalGal20

What makes you think he’s not doing his job?

      • SoCalGal20

I think Mueller is actually working for we the people. But I guess we’ll see when/if this whole administration is brought up on charges, including Trump.

Everything that has been said about Mueller is that he’s on the up and up and his bringing on RICO, organized crime, money laundering, and presidential pardon experts leads me to believe his investgation is absolutely serious. Unlike the bullshit “investigations” in Congress.

          • TampaDink

Our listing was originally marketed with 2 adjacent neighbor’s homes as a 3 lot deal, marketed towards some of the developers who are going nuts over our trendy neighborhood. In that initial listing, we hoped to get something close to our $220,000 asking price, then the neighbor on the other end of the 3 properties backed out because she needed a quick sale, she accepted $91,000. Her house was razed & the massive duplex that was built is beautiful, each side is more than 1800 sq. ft. 4 b.r./ 3 baths each side is listed for $350,000 and apparently one of them is now under contract. About 2 yrs. in, we lowered our price to $190,000. but after my month in Tallahassee, I decided we need to get on with it & since my father-in-law’s health is declining.

          • thatotherjean

I doubt that, by the end of his life, Trump will be able to remember much of anything. Along with the rest of his mental problems, I suspect he has Alzheimer’s Disease.

    • Treant

OK, let’s talk “sense,” like the fact that the above quote from DT makes absolutely no sense.

Hurricanes, at heart, are the “broken window” economic example. There’s no net benefit anywhere because nothing new has been built. We’ve simply replaced what’s destroyed (although that may be an improvement in and of itself, which would have to be accounted for). So the net gain is zero to small.

Two, so far the response to the hurricanes has been lackluster in terms of this administration. So there’s that fun bit of Dunning-Kruger from the idiot in chief.

Three, I don’t think DT feels good when helping people. He’s waiting for the “thank you sir, you’re so wonderful and strong and wise and I want to have your children.”

      • Tomcat

If he actually felt good helping people he would NOT be so quick to want their health care destroyed. Me thinks.

          • UrsusArctos

Nate’s tracking pretty much (20 miles±) along Katrina’s path. Good thing he’s MUCH smaller and didn’t have time to build a surge or NOLA would be once again relying on the USACoE having done a decent job. They have literally dodged a bullet. Thank goodness.

          • SoCalGal20

How’s the weather doing in your area? You obviously haven’t lost power or anything.

          • UrsusArctos

Really calm with bands passing through fairly dry. So it’s gusty winds with some rain. Looks like the worst is about 2-3 hours offshore. The city ran the new tornado/hurricane sirens at 1900. They are really creepy, as we’ve not had them in this area until the last year or two. The firehouse is over 3 miles away and you can hear them.

          • SoCalGal20

Ah, ok. I’m not watching the Weather Channel or anything so I wasn’t sure what was happening when. Good luck for the next several hours! Glad nothing serious has happened thus far.

          • UrsusArctos

We’ll be getting the full on NE quadrant, where the winds and surge are highest. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/849c27fe1e89cf1dbbc41c5da2b6555f051e4b8d1fc01f3d4da7efa945a067a5.png

          • SoCalGal20

Ah, the dirty quadrant as they call it. I hope it doesn’t do too much damage then. Good thing the storm was moving so fast it didn’t have time to get stronger.

      • UrsusArctos

More like “Thank you sir! May I have another!”

    • MikeBx2

The second quote sounds like what he’d say about dropping a nuke on NK. “In one sense, you hate to see it. In another sense, you feel you can do a good job.”

  • SoCalGal20

People around here seem to forget that the Watergate investigation took close to two years. Mueller was brought on in MAY.

    • gaycuckhubby

I agree. Unless the evidence is overwhelming and out in the open this will go on for at least another year

      • SoCalGal20

Even if the evidence was overwhelming (it is) they still have to do an investigation and put a fucking case together. That doesn’t happen in six months.

        • AJ Drew

And sadly there is the fact that a Judge’s ruling is based on previous rulings. We’ve never seen this shitstorm before, nor could our founding Constitution founders imagined *this* scenario.

          • TampaDink

The scenarios that they could imagine are a drop in the bucket of what is known, invented, and accepted in the 21st century.

          • SoCalGal20

A lot of the behavior (obstruction of justice, conspiracy, etc) is like Watergate. It’s just the involvement of Russia that is a completely new element.

        • TampaDink

I agree…and I want them to get every detail right so that there is no dispute of their findings.

      • Lazycrockett

I think that Mueller has moved beyond collusion and is concentrating on how many people were working for the Russian’s to subvert our government.

        • Lazycrockett

and I’m looking at you RNC.

    • AJ Drew

Although you are correct, may I remind you that every second of DT *feels* like an hour…

      • SoCalGal20

LOL believe me, I do understand that!

And it would be nice if Mueller was able get the indictments out and wrap his investigation before Trump starts WWIII.

        • AJ Drew

          I truly am willing to wait, IF… IF… IF…

Though DT has not effected a single law, his grand-standing executive orders are having huge (legal or not) effect. Hate it.

          • Tomcat

He signed into law internet sites selling all your information without your permission.

    • Treant

Yeah, still not buying it. We have computers. They didn’t.

There is, at the moment, no actual evidence that Mueller is doing much of anything. And I’m always going to go with the evidence.

      • Tomcat

Because Mueller does not leak everything like some politicians.

      • SoCalGal20

Not how investigations work, but sure whatever you say.

        • Treant

Thanks for the godawful attitude. This is why we don’t interact often.

yeah, but donny isn’t even half as smart as nixon

        • Ninja0980

Given how many GOP and Republicans think he was wrongly accused, who knows?

      • Ken M

And Clinton was dishonest. eeeeeeeeeeeeewwwwwww..That’s a political first. Took more than 2 years and a lot more money.

      • SoCalGal20

Yeah, but Mueller has all those other people to investigate too.

Alas. My neurologist has me completely off alcohol due to it being a migraine trigger.

Less pain. More stress. It’s an acceptable, if sometimes tedious, tradeoff…

      • TampaDink

If it will help you to feel better, I’ll try to consume enough alcohol for both of us. (I probably already had achieved that goal by the time I turned 40..and now that I am forty-fourteen….well let’s just say that my liver has been preserved for eternity)

        • Treant

Cool, thanks! I never was much of a drinker (I did notice the correlation between a small amount of alcohol followed eight hours later by a huge headache), but…have a glass on me.

          • TampaDink

Thank you. Don’t mind if I do. When you typed glass, I read bottle. My long suffering spousal unit often gets a throbbing headache when he imbibes…usually while he is still on his one beer, glass of wine of cocktail. Which means….all the more for me.

          • Treant

It also means your spousal unit might just want to take a trip to the doctor. As I found, migraines can be insidious things with symptoms that are incredibly far afield.

My ultra-sensitive ears? Migraine aura. Forty years of migraine aura. Same with the light-sensitive eyes. Synesthesia (I’d see sound and hear light), phantom scents, mild nausea…the list was endless.

His headaches have been significantly better since he’s been on a blood pressure medication.

  • Treant

OT: With Nate coming in, I snapped a few more shots today. I don’t expect much, if any, damage, but things are shutting down and I lifted three big and two small dahlia today. One of those dahlia is in the shot below, half dormant as its genes demand it get six months of sleep. At least. Even the very small dahlia produce tubers and can be saved for the next year–or simply regrown from purchased seed, if you prefer. I do both, saving the ones I like best from year to year, for as long as they live (usually 3 years or so).

Interestingly, those really tall, lanky, ugly marigolds with ugly, petal-less blooms are daughters of the dark orange ones right around them! Moonsong Deep Orange don’t breed anywhere close to true. Most of the dwarf African marigolds don’t and aren’t worth saving, but there are a few rare exceptions.

At least the Profusion zinnia still look good.

No need, it’ll be a tropical depression by the time it gets here. Winds about 25 at max. After passing the mountains, I doubt it’ll generate much over 15.

The tall stuff remaining is all staked in place at this point. Even that lilac dahlia in the above shot, which isn’t even that tall.

ETA: The current forecast calls for 10 MPH winds, with gusts to 13. We get far worse than that during the average thunderstorm.

        • gaycuckhubby

That is a peace lily. And watering it is the correct response, it doesn’t need much else. Maybe feed it once or twice a year if you’re so inclined.

        • Treant

Peony, tuberous begonia, and tea rose, if I’m guessing right.

They all look great and, unlike most, your rose does not suffer from chlorosis.

Your begonia is in a bit more than average sun, hence the burgundy coloration on the leaf (it’s generating anthocyanins to protect itself from excess sunlight). It’s not a problem, but you could move it into a tad more shade if you wished. Most of us like the leaf coloration and leave them in more sunlight for that very reason and that’s cool if you keep it watered and mist on really, really, brutally hot days. Dealer’s choice.

I often put some shade lovers in more sun, particularly those that generate lots of anthocyanins in excess sunlight (like begonia or coleus). The leaf colors can become incredibly intense as long as you don’t overdo it. I’ve also often overdone it and damaged the plant…

          • greenmanTN

I have a climbing rose bush, which is from a cutting from my mother, which was from a cutting from my grandmother, so technically that plant is probably 50 years old at least. At my mother’s there was an overgrown plot of land behind her, completely wild, with locust trees and scrub brush, and I swear that rose had to be at least 25′ up those trees. I have it climbing some wrought iron porch supports and have to cut it back every year. The blooms are pink.

          • Treant

I think I’d call that a clone. Since the original plants were alive when the clone was grown, they’re not the same plant. Or does that lead to a real-world example of the Ship of Theseus philosophical question?

I always call them new plants; there are fourteen clones of my Thomas A. Edison dahlia in my office (one or two might survive), but the parent tuber is drying on my kitchen table at the moment.

Climbing roses are great…if you can keep them blooming! Most people can’t, so you’re doing something right.

          • greenmanTN

            A clone?! Well I never! 😉

I defer to your superior knowledge. If something right is mostly ignoring it and hitting it with water every once in a while, I’m doing it. It must be a very hardy strain.

          • Treant

They are. And they object most to drought. 🙂

          • Amanda B. Rekendwith

Peony? I’m thinking you meant lily.

        • billbear1961

          What a beautiful rose!

        • billbear1961

Do you know this from the Sherlock Holmes stories?

“Our highest assurance of the goodness of Providence seems to me to rest in the flowers. All other things, our powers, our desires, our food, are all really necessary for our existence in the first instance. But this rose is an extra. Its smell and its colour are an embellishment of life, not a condition of it. It is only goodness which gives extras, and so I say again that we have much to hope from the flowers.”

Flowers look and smell as they do to attract insects to spread their pollen, but the meditation is . . . poetic.

Too bad that religion is usually so hateful and ugly.

          • greenmanTN

No, I hadn’t heard/read that before, which is odd in a way because I worked in a mystery-only bookstore when I was in college. But the Sherlock Holmes fans were clannish and snobby about it, I preferred more modern “psychological thrillers,” so to this day I’ve only read a few Holmes stories and seen the old Basil Rathbone movies.

I see a lot of Republicans assholes trying to pin Harvey Weinstein on Democrats.
IMO, all you have to do is this.
When Weiner was sentenced this past month to his slap on the wrist jail term, no Democrats wrote letters trying to get a lesser sentence from him.
On the other hand, Denny Hasert had several current and former Republicans write letters in support of him, even when they knew who he was.
The GOP and the right can take their “outrage” over Weinstein and shove it.

            http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/images/4/4b/GRNTHGHTSN1945.jpg

Sort of Body Snatchers without the Red Menace underpinnings, more a macabre British drawing room farce. Instead of the plant replacing individuals, it absorbs them and they become blooms on a single plant, looking on in horror as insects go from one to one, appalled because they’re having “sex” without being properly introduced… (a very broad description)

Collier is one of my favorite short story writers, often morbid but with a light, even comic, touch. His “Evening Primrose” was the source for an early Sondheim musical.

I wonder if marijuana and potato plants are on the list. Might as well be relaxed and stoned when I kiss my ass goodbye. Potato plants to make vodka and potato wine.

      • Treant

All plants clean the air of many chemicals, the list above is just the most effective. And in all cases, the plant requires an optimal environment in terms of light, water, and food to do the optimal job. And they need their leaves cleaned regularly to avoid dust buildup.

Optimal environments and proper cleaning don’t happen very often.

I actually don’t have anything on the list. I like schefflera and corn plant (which isn’t corn), indoor marigolds and begonia, and hibiscus and Christmas cactus (which isn’t a cactus).

Grow what you like. Anything helps with air quality.

I will also add that baby huey is doing the same to melanoma as bill did to Hillary.

But she spun her own thing and in the end she had a career of her own and found her marriage to be salvageable enough to continue, as far as we know their marriage is fine now, keep in mind who wears the pants in that marriage and got him to stick to a vegan regime that probably expanded his life cycle by years.

melanoma gets no sympathy, she was the other woman while he was screwing around, and shes getting screwed with while he’s fucking who knows who at least a few women and that hicks girl, and he’ll leave her when her looks fade and all she has is a kid that maybe she could be able to squeeze out child support for. He literally fucked another woman and betrayed her and she couldn’t stand to leave the asshole, because she knows she is nothing without having his financial support, that’s all that she is.

And Hillary had no doing in what bill had going on with those women, he is guilty and so were they. They were pissed off that their relationship was nothing special to amount to his marriage to Hillary. He wasn’t going to leave her for one of them.

I guess I am just use to these gun massacres, cause the SNL opening just isn’t effecting me.

    • TampaDink

I just tuned in….did I miss a cold opening sketch?

      • Lazycrockett

Its a country musician who did a tribute to Las Vegas and I was like really?

        • TampaDink

Ah…but since they were performing a Tom Petty song and I missed the intro, I thought I’d missed the cold opening & that they were doing a tribute to Tom.

          • SoCalGal20

It was a double tribute of sorts. The massacre in Las Vegas happened during Aldean’s set, so he opened SNL with some comments then went into the Tom Petty tribute with I Won’t Back Down.

          • TampaDink

Thanks for helping to bring me up to speed. I do appreciate it and now I fully “get” why they opened this way.

        • houstonray

He’s the singer who was on stage in Vegas when the shooting started…

      • houstonray

No cold opening, it’s starting on a serious note tonight with Jason Aldean singing this is the cold opening.

        • houstonray

Plus he was singing a Tom Petty song so I think it was a double tribute of sorts.

          • TampaDink

I can appreciate that now. Thanks.

Katrina drove most of them inland and Mississippi lost millions of dollars in tax revenue every day those casinos weren’t operational. So the law was changed to allow the casinos to be on land. Apparently White Jesus just hates Mississippi.

Also Harvey has been suspended from his job. Is Donald? Weiner got prosecuted for what he did and got sentenced, Also he lost his job and his wife, IIRC, left him. Until Donald suffer similarly, this false equivalence is bullshit. Also, I don’t see Jimmy chomping at the bit for that GOP House Rep to have minutes devoted to pushing his mistress to have an abortion.

When I was a teenager (MID 70s) and interest rates were high (you could get 10% on Canada Savings Bonds, pretty much the safest investment around) we got our first million-dollar lottery in Canada.

I figured if you win that you could just put it in safe investments and be set for life with an income of $100,000 a year.

Of course I learned a few years later that it rarely works out that way. Lotteries are almost always won by people with little understanding of wealth management.

I do ok in retirement in Canada but having to pay for health insurance in the US would be truly scary.
