Las Vegas Gunman Hired Hooker Before Shooting

Another right wing conspiracy theory has been debunked.

The New York Daily News reports:

Investigators believe the Las Vegas mass shooter hired a prostitute in the days leading up to the massacre, says an official briefed by federal law enforcement.

Paddock, who was reportedly seen with a mystery woman in his last days, is believed to have hired a prostitute, according to the official, who told AP investigators are now interviewing other call girls for information.

In addition to interviewing the call girls, investigators are now turning to the public with billboards urging anyone with information to call the FBI.

We are living in interesting times. That always makes me more bitchy than I need to be.

          • Phillip in L.A.

It’s OK, greenman; you are among friends! 😉

          • David Walker

Kinda like Brother Boy in “Sordid Lives.” Walked the hall wigless…we’re so proud of him.

          • What the hell is that? The pink thing is bad but what’s with the crossed pinstripe panels? If I saw someone wearing that I’d fall over laughing. Seriously. Someone sold her that?

          • thatotherjean

Solid proof that clothing designers hate plus-size people, is what that is. Plus-size clothing is nearly all like that–things you’d never see in stores catering to average-sized people.

          • There’s some truth to that. The options are not as good above a certain size, but I’m an opera singer and I know a LOT of women a LOT bigger than her and they would not leave the house in clothes that hideous. So there are better options that these.

          • thatotherjean

No doubt women have better options iif they can afford them. What did Sarah do before she got this job? Or maybe she has no sense of what looks less-than-hideous on her and no friends brave enough to tell her.

          • Well I don’t know Sarah but we do have mutual friends. (That’s not bragging. I can’t believe I admitted that but we know a lot of the same people.) Her Dad made quite a bit of money and nepotism is as rampant on the right as it is on the left so I don’t think she was exactly on skid row when she got that job. And even so, did that dress not come in any color besides hot pink? Again, I know women with a lot less money and who weigh a lot more and they wouldn’t wear such hideous clothes if they were free much less for sale. Sorry, but this is a matter of not having any taste. Fortunately if you are in public life there are people around who can be paid to have taste for you. There has to be at least one intern in her office with some fashion sense. There’s no excuse for either of those outfits. None.

          • thatotherjean

Oh, I agree with you–on those last two sentences, especially. She should get some help.

          • 2guysnamedjoe

It’s mental ward retro straightjacket chic.

      • LatrinaDiBucca

        She looks like Jethrine Bodine.

      • I know. it’s not like she’s not wearing haute couture. But what she wears is always so shockingly hideous. Is there really no one in the West Wing with any fashion sense to help her?

        • David Walker

          Kellyanne.

          • Umm no. Her “No Gay Friends” (NGF) look is bad enough but she doesn’t need to go full “demented meth whore” by dressing like Kellyanne!

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

Even a simple grey suit from a Macy’s would look more professional.

          • ClevelandJim

That’s my thought–why can’t she just wear a subdued, non-descript, professional-looking suit, like male press secretaries have always worn? These crazyass outfits just scream “Attention Whore here!”

          • FAEN

Think of the attention whore family she come see from.

          • pj

            or “clueless church lady”

          • If she were wearing a navy or grey suit and a simple white blouse, I wouldn’t be making fun of how she dresses. That would be professional and appropriate and probably look good on her as well.

        • Nowhereman

Scaramucci was working on it, but alas he’s gone now. He sure was a hoot though!

Maybe she should hire that shitty homocon dragqueen to help her out. Couldn’t do much worse.

        • 2guysnamedjoe

No, there aren’t. Most epublican males’ fashion sense begins and ends with a suit and tie. Most Republican wimmin aspire to be skinny bitches like I-bonka, so they’re of no use to what’s her name either.

      • Snarkaholic

        I didn’t notice her clothes…because I can’t get past her face!

      • Dagoril

I’m sure that color looks good on somebody.

Just not on her. She should stick with Hefty Bag Green.

      • Phillip in L.A.

She looks like her drag name should be, “Fraulein Frumpy”!

      • Oh, Parker

No, no, no……she wouldn’t make a dime in Las Vegas.

      • David Walker

Depends. If one had a nun fantasy, for example, or a not-particularly-good dominatrix fantasy, or a good girl go wrong desire, she’d probably do OK…but she shouldn’t give up day job.

    • FAEN

I see angry Pepto bottle is back.

    • Robincho

Wanton, in this case, is pronounced “one ton”…

  • Frostbite

I wonder how much money is being spent wasted on trying to figure out why, rather than trying to deal with the aftermath and prevent this from happening in the future. Let’s face it, the guy was intelligent, calculated and knew exactly what he was doing. If he wanted to leave a note, manifesto, whatever, he would have certainly done so. Whatever reasons he had for doing what he did, he took to the grave with him, which was exactly what he wanted to do.

    • sdnative1958

My inner Hercule Poirot came out this morning and came up with this…

Las Vegas freak tires of winning at life. Gambling, Real Estate, hot(?) girlfriend…ain’t enough. Bored. Now he’s looking to win at something else.

      Death.

But it has to be challenging. Hands-on. Combining some skill, with luck. Planned out over time. Like all his other “wins.”

He goes for it. Hits the Sandy Hook number. Keeps going. Hits the Pulse Night Club number. Keeps going. Surpasses it. Jackpot. Over and out.

“A cryptic note full of random numbers was found in the Las Vegas shooter’s hotel room, police said.”

      *shudder*

      • Lars Littlefield

The cryptic note full of random numbers . . . .could it be . . . a Keno ticket?!!!!

        • sdnative1958

          Ha!

        • Anastasia Beaverhousen

Sequel to that awful Nicholas Cage movie, “Knowing”

      • thatotherjean

Your inner Hercule has as good an explanation as any offered so far.

      • Frostbite

Well there you go. He was a wacko looking for a high score. Put it to rest and move on with rebuilding. How much money and time will be wasted on that note? If it were me I’d pick random numbers out of the air and put them down just to screw with everyone for the next 100 years trying to figure it out.

      • pipslvr

Had thought of this. Guy was just tired of it all and wanted to go out in “big style”

Wouldn’t it be something if we tried to rig the Russian election? Now that we pretty much know what they did and how they did it, one would think good old American know-how could sabotage the Putin vote and cover their tracks better than Russia did. Go for it, guys. 45 doesn’t believe anything you say anyway, so who cares about it and Pooty? What’s good for the gander…, all’s fair in love and…, and any number of other cliches that apply.

People who fuck for money are prostitutes but not whores

          • wineflask

I am sorry to inform you that your info about heterosexual world is incorrect. Most women are considered too old and/or ugly.

          • Todd20036

I’ve seen that, but I suspect it’s more of a case of men being bitter that they cannot get laid

          • wineflask

I see your point. Indeed, it might be possible for non-traditionally-attractive ladies to hook up if the man can feel confident no one is going to find out. Unfortunately, this method is extremely unsafe (remember: most men are way stronger than an average woman).

OT or maybe not: part of the reason why we have problems like this is because of the insane need for a lot of men to revenge their goddamn dickhurt, especially if they blame a woman for it.

    https://www.salon.com/2017/10/06/liberal-journalists-reportedly-sent-tips-to-breitbart-now-theyre-scrambling/

“Can we pick out any lessons from the seemingly traitorous actions of Yiannopoulos’s “helpers in the liberal media,” as Bernstein described them? It may be too early to tell — particularly as some claims are still disputed, for instance by Auerbach — yet, provided the allegations prove true, there are commonalities that hint at motive. For one, all three of the journalists outed were men, and all three sought to vent to Yiannopoulos about feminist critics that irked them. This suggests that even powerful men who work within liberal circles may have felt inwardly threatened by feminism, or powerful women, or both. Evidently, they felt some solidarity with Yiannopoulos that allowed them to confide in him.
Perhaps the pull of Yiannopoulos’s celebrity was alluring, or his aggressive edginess entertaining, or his ability to smash and ruin the lives of critics tempting. And perhaps they also knew that online trollery is not a two-way street: as far as digital targets go, women are subject to far more online harassment than men.”

O/T NYT headline today. Just as [Spain] seemed to be recovering, the referendum has made investors wary, and prompted banks and businesses to move out of Catalonia.
The threat to the Catalan economy is not theoretical; Montreal’s population history looks like this:
    1961 1,201,559
    1966 1,293,992
    1971 1,214,352
    1976 1,080,545
    1981 1,018,609
    1986 1,015,420
    1991 1,017,666
    1996 1,016,376
    2001 1,039,534
    2006 1,620,693

In 1976, the separatist Parti Québécois was elected to government. By then, English-speaking Quebeckers had started moving to Toronto and Vancouver as their employers moved their businesses out of Quebec. (The ones I met and worked with were bitter and resentful…and hadn’t bothered to learn even basic-level French.) Montreal and the entire province still hasn’t fully recovered – Toronto took over as the business capital of Canada.

Separatism in Quebec is seen as a project for old people – those from the 1970s and 1980s. The Parti Quebecois still exists and may even form government in 2018. Their enthusiasm for another referendum has waned – they know it’s a losing proposition. From October, 2016:

A full 82 per cent of Quebec respondents to a survey conducted by the Angus Reid Institute in partnership with CBC agreed with the statement, “Ultimately, Quebec should stay in Canada.”

So far, he seems to be another self-indulgent man-child who had a hissy fit, and, being deplorably selfish and indifferent to the welfare of others, decided to vent his frustration by going on a killing spree. He described himself as a professional gambler… basically, he was delusional. That is no identity or profession. It is a movie fantasy. At some point, no matter how dim one might be, the emptiness of the fantasy becomes apparent you. If you are capable of even a trace of introspection, you acknowledge your shame and try to move on to living a more adult human life. Lacking that, you throw a temper tantrum, smash your toys (because people are only toys to you), and you leave… in a blaze of pseudo glory… another movie fantasy that appeals to the appallingly childish.

If you judge people’s personalities by their looks, you’re committing a very old error of judgement. Doesn’t matter if he looks saintly, his looks don’t change what he did, and shouldn’t change how you think of him.

Likewise, there are excellent people in the world who’s looks don’t contain any indication of their excellence. You’re probably missing out on a lot.

      • GanymedeRenard

You’re most probably right. It’s just that I want my villains to look evil and my heroes to look beautiful (or at least decent.) Is that a crime on an ethical/aesthetical level? I’m certainly not an arbiter of good taste, but I think I’m much influenced by Plato’s transcendentals (beauty, truth, goodness should all be connected). Sorry if I’m being too idealistic here. :/

OT: In from gardening and lifting four dahlia, currently drying on the kitchen table! I just saw an ad for Homicide Hunter on ID, wherein he asked, “Where does somebody get their hands on pure lye?”

I have ten pounds in the basement and a pound and a half in the garage in active use. This is enough to produce around 80 pounds of soap.

Don’t piss me off, apparently I’ll poison you like the woman on that episode. 🙂

    • Ninja0980

Homicide Hunter is one of the hubby and the parental unit’s favorite shows and something we all watch during our weekly dinner.

      • Treant

I love Lt. Kenda. But honestly, show writers, do your research. Lye is pretty easy to get and costs around $1.50 a pound.

You don’t even have to sign your life away any longer. Essential Depot has food grade lye available at a very reasonable price.

(And yes, it’s used by cooks as well, for pretzels, lutefisk, bagels, and pumpkin [spice] Turkish dessert).

        • Ninja0980

A lot of these shows don’t do their research 100% but since most of them haven’t been sued, they’ll keep doing it.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Yep! Lye is extremely common and extremely cheap

    • Tomcat

Easier to grow your own Caster plant and make ricin.
      That is from another episode.

      • Treant

That’s trivially easy, actually, and you can buy them at many greenhouses.

I also use castor oil in soap making, but, alas, it contains no ricin. Just ricinoleic acid, which is not toxic (but is used as a baby laxative).

I think he was a sociopath. He ticks so many of the boxes: thrill-seeking, broken marriages, business success, sexual acting out…
Sociopaths are all around us, unfortunately. Most of them never come into contact with the criminal justice system although the prisons are full of them. They just try to latch onto good, caring people and utterly wreck their lives, plus frequently their own.

    • gaycuckhubby

He planned this way in advance and appears to have planned multiple venues/attacks.
This was not as a result of a night of bad sex. Also unlikely a sex worker would laugh at a client

      • Jean-Marc in Canada

Agreed. That said, humour, especially gallows or sexual in nature, is a common reaction to tragedy. That said, the sex worker would not have provoked or commented as you say, they’re professionals and would have, unless directly been threatened or fearful of their client, complimented the client. I dated a hustler during Uni (never bothered me what he did because I always knew whose bed he’d be sleeping in) and he always made it clear that with clients, it wasn’t so much about the sex and it was about their egos and self-worth. So yeah, the sex worker wouldn’t be the cause.

Well, since you asked and I’m not one to shy away from answering any question: it was literally “I top at work, I bottom at home” with him and that’s the way we liked it. He was a bondage and electro fetishist and I was/am a leather Sir, so it was a match made in fetish heaven. As for mad skills, oh yes, he most certainly did have those, mind you, so did/do I.

          • Treant

Oh, that does sound fun! From the bedroom aspect, it’s too bad it didn’t, ultimately, work out.

          • Jean-Marc in Canada

Actually, it’s not that it didn’t work out, we’re still great friends today. It’s just that after 4 years together, he finished Uni and was offered a great career opportunity that would take him to Asia. He wanted to stay because I was still studying, but I told him he’d resent me if he didn’t jump at the opportunity; he could come back if it didn’t work out (it did work out and I was thrilled for him). After more than a few tears, we said our “until we meet again” and moved on. He’s now working in Australia as a financial consultant for those in need. Myself and Esteban visit at least once a year.

Since this is becoming an open thread 🙂

What is the go-to gay publications these days? It used to be the Advocate and Out. Both seem kind of irrelevent these days. Or maybe just to me.

    • PickyPecker

I think most traditional ‘publications,’ at least nationally, have ceased to be of relevance on the whole. The internet provides a much broader range of options for community news.

JMG is a great source for many things and the comments section is loaded with intelligent information/links (as well as some pretty biting wit).

Towleroad is pretty good, although their comments section lacks in sophistication most times.

Qeerty is out there, but it’s kinda like the National Enquirer, IMO. Lots of ‘click-bait’ and such.

All my opinions, just to be clear.

I have noted over time that regional (and sometimes city) publications still thrive, but are very pointed toward whichever city/region they serve making them an ill fit for those outside their area.

      • gaycuckhubby

I agree with all your points 🙂
JMG is my most visited. By far.
And I don’t have any subscriptions to print magazines. Just the New York Times

        • PickyPecker

I take ‘The Atlantic,’ ‘Vanity Fair,’ and ‘The Chicago Tribune’ as well as the tiny local rag just so I can keep up with the most recent flaps (and obituaries).

I also try to read the Washington Blade online. I think the reporting is good even though the comment sections under the stories are fairly desolate or are too frequently visited by anti-LGBT provocateurs.

Additionally local LGBT news sources, such as just a few examples the Bay Area Reporter (BAR) in the SF Bay Area, Gay San Diego and San Diego G&L News (full disclosure owned by Carl DeMaio’s boyfriend, Jonathon Hale), can really provide valuable insight to local community politics.

    • Phillip in L.A.

What are you looking for in these “go-to” publications? There are still plenty of rags published, which one can pick up outside most bars and other gay establishments (at least in West Hollywood); they seem mainly aimed toward some strange, unknown demographic (and since they are all free, it is difficult to understand their ‘business model.’)

None of them publishes anything interesting or new (unless one follows the trials and tribulations of porn stars), at least that I have seen!

      • gaycuckhubby

The Advocate used to have exclusive interviews and profiles on out LGBT celebrities performers and politicians. And have reviews of obscure queer arts and entertainment.

    O/T but long post.
Saw this tweet and it’s a doubled edged sword for me.
I know some people that have worked in porn and they are all living successful and productive lives post porn.
In a couple of cases (very rare) they are married to someone they met on set.
Sadly though, I’ve also seen the reverse far too often.
Young kids who need $$$ or want acceptance are easy prey for porn producers who assure them they can shoot a few movies and it won’t hurt them in the future.
    It does.
We’ve all seen the horror stories where someone who did even one porn shoot when they were 18 or 19 gets fired for it 10-12 years later.
Not to mention how so many young men (and middle age ones too) get used up and thrown away for the next hot thing.
That is a crushing blow for many whom found acceptance for the first time in their lives by being a porn star.
Not shocked at all how folks who already had problems got even worse afterwards and ended up dead.
But in the end, while I do think the porn industry has to look at itself sometimes for what happens to some people who work for them, others were doomed no matter what.
What is everyone else’s thoughts on this?

Barbara Ehrenreich’s book about falling out of the white-collar middle-class (“Bait and Switch”, which I just finished) was written shortly before pre-housing bust. She perhaps didn’t realize it at the time of original publication, but the former real-estate agents who were looking for jobs, who tried (against a diktat of “positivity” and self-reliance) to comfort each other at “networking events” with confirmation that the market was soft, should have been listened to, like dying frogs.
