Trump Rolls Back Obamacare Birth Control Mandate

CNBC reports:

The Trump administration is expanding exemptions to an Affordable Care Act rule requiring employers to include birth control coverage in health plans.

On Friday, the Departments of Health and Human Services, Treasury and Labor issued “interim final rules” to make more entities exempt from providing plans that cover contraceptives without a co-payment. They will create what a senior HHS official described as limited exemptions for organizations that have a sincerely held religious or moral objection to providing birth control coverage.

Under the eased rules, nonprofits, private companies, institutions of higher education and certain non-government employers with religious objections can get an exemption from the mandate, an official told reporters.

  • elvigy

A majority of white women voted for Trump, so this is OK I guess.

    • bambinoitaliano

Many of them past their child bearing age so not their concern.

      • Goodboy

..and the ones that are never bothered to vote.

        • Zeldacat

          Not the ones I know!

      • ColdCountry

I have never had call to argue with you, and I agree with much of what you say, but in this case, Fuck You. DO NOT think you know, or paint us all with the same brush. That is no more true than saying all gay men are pedophiles.

        • bambinoitaliano

Should have put a /S at the end of my comment. My line of thought was about selfish assholes who as long as they are not personally affected by whatever discrimination or plight would gladly support any legislature. The same way I use the term white old men, red state, Taxes, Florida or Alabama on my comments. Oh well.

          • ColdCountry

I’m sorry. As I said, I’ve never had any serious argument with you before. It was a knee-jerk, or just jerk, reaction caused by all the nasty news overload. Usually my sarcasm detector is in much better working order.

          • bambinoitaliano

Eh no worries. I spend so much time on this site and take for granted everyone who reads my comment knew my sense of humor. Not that I do not have some blindspots or my own sets of ignorance to deal with. πŸ™‚

    • ColdCountry

Perhaps a majority of white women who voted, but, for my own sanity, I can not believe that a majority of white women in the country voted for him. Certainly none of the women, regardless of color, that I know voted for him. In fact, had one of my best friends not been in rehab after back surgery, she would have been at the women’s march. Again.

    • Gerry Fisher

…until it affects them. “Narcissism Lite” is being self absorbed and having a poor ability to empathize.

      • ColdCountry

I do hope you are not painting all older white women with the same brush, ’cause if you are, I may have to hunt you down and hurt you.

    • JCF

I’m guessing most of the white women here EITHER are 1) queer or 2) have college degrees (or both), so Does.Not.Apply.

  • safari

Will the companies be adopting the unwanted children, too?

    • clay

Yes, but not quite the way you hope.

    • bambinoitaliano

No but the expiration of CHIP should take care of that. There’s also added insurance policy of no new gun law to stop madmen from firing in schools and day care.

    • Smokey

No, they’ll be busy firing the now pregnant women who need the job to pay for the care of the children.

      • Bluto

        & certainly no maternity leave!

    • kaydenpat

Nope. They may end up firing the pregnant mothers though.

It’s insane that a company can have any say whatsoever in their employees’ personal sex lives.

    • clay

or their maternity leave, or their child support, or their resistance to an abusive husband.

      • GayOldLady

I don’t know why, but too many legislators simply cannot understand that for WOMEN pregnancy and child birth is a health issue. I had two very difficult pregnancies. At the birth of my second child I had a massive internal hemorrhage and went into cardiac arrest. Child birth is normal, but it also has risks and great risks for some women. Women should not be forced to have to pay for a very expensive prescription medication that is on the formulary of every prescription drug plan. We already carry the lions share of the responsibility in child rearing, now we’re suppose to carry all of the responsibility of conception while being denied coverage for contraception? It’s driven totally by sexism. A “keep the little woman barefoot and pregnant” mentality.

I’ve been saying this for a long time. It’s sad but I think it’s the only thing that’s going to wake the populace that doesn’t vote on the regular out of their apathetic coma. The people that voted for Trump, I’ve already written off.

      • JW Swift

This is me at my ugliest and most petty: I have had one too many younger women tell me that sexism is over, they aren’t one of those awful feminists, etc etc., when I ball-busted my way through a 25+ year career in a predominantly male field.

Sexism isn’t over, ladies, and now that I’m bouncing against menopause with killer insurance, you can take up the fight. Control over your reproductive rights is THE MOST important fiscal issue you face in your life. Meanwhile, I’ll keep voting the good vote and try my damnedest to get the house back in 2018.

I was talking with an early 20s co-worker before the election who didn’t seem to have any stress over women’s health issues. So I told her that when I was in high school, doctors were forbidden, by law, to prescribe birth control to a married woman without her husband’s permission, and that single women where just sol. She appeared appropriately stunned, but it may just have been the realization that I was so old. This truly is an “in your lifetime” issue, and a lot of younger women just don’t seem to get that.

The companies that will refuse to provide birth control coverage will, surely, justify their not hiring of women by saying that pregnancy makes women “unreliable” employees. This will irreparably harm the financial well-being and independence of women across the nation, but it does come from Donald Trump who believes that any respectable, intelligent, confident and self-supporting woman is “nasty” and should be locked up. Women in his world are only fit to be wives (see: slaves), doing as they are told and having sex on command.

    • I am 73. “This is a responsible position. What if you get pregnant?” Question regularly asked of me at job interviews. I was unmarried.

My guess is that way over 90% of those Evangelicals and Fundamentalist Christians who publicly oppose contraception, engage in it themselves. The Catholic hierarchy has been calling contraception a grave evil for generations, yet over 95% of Catholics are estimated to use or have used contraception as a method of limiting the size of their families. These religious leaders are liars, fools and hypocrites.

What the hell is wrong with women that they “we” stand for this? We make up nearly 51% of the population. We could end this tomorrow IF we’d stand together. I don’t think the majority of men want this either, but some pervert with a bible and a podium in a church tells them birth control is “wrong” and they just swallow that up and destroy their lives and the lives of their children out of fear of some Sky Daddy.
