Hurricane Watch Issued For New Orleans [VIDEO]

CNN reports:

New Orleans, and states from Louisiana to Florida, braced Friday as forecasters predicted Tropical Storm Nate would pound the Gulf Coast this weekend as a hurricane.

The center of the storm was expected to pass late Saturday or early Sunday about 50 miles east of New Orleans, which was devastated 12 years ago by Hurricane Katrina, according to the National Hurricane Center. It would be the third hurricane, after Harvey and Irma, to hit the US mainland in six weeks.

Nate already has killed at least 21 people in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Honduras, where it caused widespread flash flooding and mudslides, officials said. New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu declared a state of emergency Thursday and advised residents to stay put over the weekend.

More from Bustle:

It’s now expected that the storm will head north, first towards the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and then towards the U.S. Gulf Coast. Besides its likely brush with the Mexican coast, the storm will travel over warm water for its entire journey north, and due to those favorable conditions, it could strengthen into a Category 1, 2, or even 3 hurricane in less than a day.

Whereas earlier predictions of Tropical Storm Nate’s trajectory gave it a higher chance of moving slightly eastwards and heading towards the Florida panhandle, the latest predictions have it heading directly towards New Orleans.

We’re going food shopping tonight. I expect the shelves will be largely empty by the time we get to the market (or make groceries, as they say down here). Our house is on relatively high ground (for NO), but anything can happen.

Todd, do you see that the current estimated track of the storm takes it over the D.C.-Maryland area? Hopefully, by the time it gets to us, it’ll be only rain. We can use the rain.

While here in NO, everyone seems to be, well, this is what we have to do, let’s do it, and we’ll party in the streets when the rain lessens.

          • jerry

I was just there for Decadence…other than a little rain, Harvey missed NO. My friends there live on the other side of the Garden District.

We should have a big JMG get-together at SoDec next year! I’d love to meet some of the people commenting on this blog thingy.

          • jerry

I ran into Joe on both Sunday and Monday there…I was there for a full week, and stayed on Chartres St.

          • madknits

I ran into him at Lafitte’s In Exile on Sunday. He had his JMG t-shirt on. If you came to the block party at the Phoenix on Saturday night, I was one of the Guards selling Jell-O shots with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

          • jerry

I missed that party…but it was around Lafitte’s that I ran into him Sunday, because I saw the shirt. I was late going out on Sunday, because I was over at the friends’ house eating and watching a college football game…so it was probably 11:30 before I made it out. He was also at Bourbon Pub on Monday.

          • madknits

          • jerry

I usually do Decadence every other year…but I’m highly impetuous/suggestible with travel plans. I wasn’t planning on going this year, after taking most of June off (DC pride/march and NYC pride), but I had a WTF moment in July and booked NO anyway.

          • madknits

I’m glad you decided to come down. Hope you had a terrific time.

          • jerry

I always do. And it’s a relatively cheap trip compared to all my NE US travels. Other than last Dec. staying a week at Parliament House in Orlando ($69/night!), NO is probably cheapest trip.
Though in NO, Monday about 5 AM, going back to my hotel, someone did run into me, grabbing my wallet…no money in it, just credit cards and ID. So it was more embarrassing than anything else…after many hours of drinking, it tends to make you let your guard down.

          • Joe in PA

And don’t get me started on snow storms!!! Now where is that bread-n-milk panic guy?

          • jerry

OMG, any more the people drive like shit even when it’s raining, let alone when snow’s on. And if they predict an inch of snow, there’s usually no use trying to go to the grocery store…nothing left on the shelves.

          • Joe in PA

You are in DC as well jerry? A lot of JMGers seem to be there. Cool.

          • jerry

No…I’m in northern WV. But that shit’s happening all over the NE any more, where people should be used to a little snow in winter.

          • Uncle Mark

OMG, my mind must be slipping. I remember that clip, but am embarrassed to say that I have forgotten that was Monty Python. Thanks.

          • vorpal 😼

Ha. If it makes you feel any better, I’m 40, and have seen that movie at least three times, and did not even recognize the clip at all.

Then again, even at the age of 20, there was one time I rented a movie, brought it home, started watching it, and realized about halfway through that I had rented the same movie about a month before. I still had no recollection of how it ended.

            (Life with severe ADHD!)

          • safari

I don’t know the ending of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. I start drinking at the start and am never conscious for the ending.

          • vorpal 😼

            Hahahaha!
I have watched that movie no fewer than five times and I really couldn’t tell you the ending, either. Hell, I’ve read the book, too, and I have no clue.

Trainspotting, on the other hand, I remember for some reason in meticulous detail.

I can draw dozens of pharmacological molecules from memory and recite their names, their common brand names, and their organic chemistry names, I can recite theorems from math that I learned 18 years ago, and I remember phone numbers that I called regularly before the age of 12, but if you asked me what I watched on TV two nights ago, I would have to take a few minutes and get back to you.

          • Uncle Mark

Thanks, Vorpal. I wouldn’t blame that on ADHD. There are a lot of mediocre and derivative movies I have rented or streamed, only to realize halfway through that I have seen them before, and some were so humdrum that I didn’t remember the endings either.

There’s no real excuse for me, in this particular case. I’ve been a longtime Python fan, since high school. I’m 52, so I cannot entirely blame it on age, so I’ll blame it on the orange scourge rattling my mind every damned day…impairing my ability to recall happier moments.

          • vorpal 😼

For me, it’s a matter of whenever I worry about my memory, I remember (just barely – ha) that it wasn’t any better when I was a teenager. People would often give me a mostly playful slap for attempting to tell them the same story for the sixth time.

Python is hilarious. I haven’t rewatched the Life of Brian in ages and am overdue, I think.

The Orange Scourge (love it) has us all confused as hell. He ricochets so fast from one scandal or act of stupidity to the next that it’s become impossible to keep reality straight. I think the strategy might be working: I can scarcely remember what he did or didn’t do a month ago because he’s so busy fucking up and creating new ridiculous, neglectful, selfish, or outright hateful ordeals.

          • jerry

I have to rate the movies from Netflix, religiously, otherwise I would end up duplicating all the time. And that used to happen to me sometimes, back when there were video stores.

I have had a dog… and I’ve thought about it before, but resisted temptation! (Let me revel in my small achievements of willpower.)

(Wet cat food apparently has some unstated requirement that it must smell utterly revolting, so no temptation there.)

I will admit as a kid that I ate hamster wafers a couple of times with a friend of mine and they were surprisingly not bad. Made our ten year old selves feel delightfully naughty.

Random aside: looks like we both have a fan!

I’ve noticed on a number of JMG posts, almost all of our comments get precisely one downvote each.

It’s rather flattering that someone (perhaps different people for each of us?) is so utterly obsessed with us, and such a passive-aggressive little drama bitch that they can’t ovary up enough to confront us in our actual comments.

I, for one, am amused by it!

No, we have to talk about tax cuts for rich people, that is the time.

  • Paula

Oh, damn! I was so hoping it would give Mississippi and Alabama some excitement for several days.

They must have done some serious praying, fasting, and berating of LGBT people to steer it away.

So no news of Tillerson resigned or being fired. I suppose calling the shit gibbon a fucking moron does not meet the minimum standard these days.

i remember Katrina blowing up over the gulf, strengthening well beyond what forecasters had thought πŸ™

    • Levy at Tropical Tidbits, the best forecast website out there according to wunderground, says that Nate should not be more than a category 1 due to a rapid move North and a shearing effect. It will not have enough time to blow up to a 4 — it will hit the coast in a little over a day and is moving rapidly north. We will not have a Katrina — so I would not worry. Still, a category 1 Hurricane is a bitch to live through. https://youtu.be/wk86YZmEMiE

Pow! Right in the bible belt. Again.

This seems like as good a thread as any to show what I found when I did my quick-turnaround trip to the lower Keys last weekend. The devastation from Big Pine Key to Sugarloaf Key can’t be fully described, but almost all trees and vegetation have been either knocked over or stripped bare. It reminded me of wintertime in the north, except that it was 87 degrees and no snow. My house held up relatively well, but the roof took a lot of damage, as was expected. there is a thick layer of debris in the backyard along the canal with all of the coconut palm trees on the ground. The only damage inside was to the master bedroom, where the roof leaked and a four foot hole in the ceiling caved in, and in the kitchen. Even though the storm surge didn’t get into the house, it did flood the septic system, which backed up into the dishwasher, which overflowed into the bottom kitchen cabinets and warped the wood. Repairs are underway to the roof, ceiling and kitchen cabinets, but it’s slow going, as there are a lot of people needing repairs and not enough resources to go around. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/89de83c77388e350da0aa583ee6239ff6acb1c3d54573371ee189ad29d751838.jpg https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/ff80fabbcbff60db213470554da8fd8e18bb8d318e5649998e7efac07bbb9192.jpg

Have a backflow preventer installed on your sewer line. Make sure it’s a quality one made with brass and steel, the PVC type will fail.

Is that Benny Hill? My dad loved that show. I never got it. Hmmm.

Yes, he was my first exposure to raw British Comedy.

Will this reverse-reverse job growth/decline, or will it have no effect since it’s targeting Louisiana?

    • Tomcat

It has to get worst, this jobs report does not take Puerto Rico into account yet.

      • Tomcat

Of course after all the storms construction should grow greatly, except without Latino help there will not be enough to rebuild very fast.

  • The decline of heterosexual morality is causing all these Hurricanes this year. Heteroseuxals are flaunting sodomy and other perverse sex acts in public on Facebook and other social media channels and The Lord is punishing us all. When will Heterosexuals learn not to tempt nature and publish disgusting photographs like this? Can anyone imagine the Southern Baptist shitstorm if a same-sex couple were to do this?

Can you imagine trying to get the grass stains out of that dress? BTW, we aren’t supposed to post risque pictures anymore. People are getting into trouble at work and the lesbians are annoyed. Joe requested a halt.

        • Silver Badger

To be perfectly honest, I am totally scared of lesbians. What ever they want, I’ll do my best to give them.

          • yes b’y

            can’t blame you there

          • vorpal 😼

I am convinced that we wouldn’t even have a small fraction of the rights and protections that we’ve worked hard to earn were it not for lesbians. They are often far more politically involved and motivated than many of the gay men that I’ve known.

          • Silver Badger

You are right. They also were indispensable during the early years of the AIDS epidemic. I am grateful to the lesbians, but they still scare me.

          • vorpal 😼

I didn’t know about their role in the AIDS epidemic. We are indeed lucky to have the lesbians largely on our side and fighting on our behalf when much of the anti-gay sentiment is directed towards gay men.

This is similarly why I think we have an obligation to stand up for trans people and help them in their battle for equal rights and protections and social acceptance.

But yes, I agree: a pissed off lesbian can be a terrifying force to be reckoned with! Those are some strong women!

It’s gonna pass through Chattanooga area Sunday, which happens to be the Chattanooga/Tn Valley Gay pride festival. That means all 10-12 people will have to find something else to do or just tough it out in the rain. That is if we are expecting the usual size crowd.

    • Joe in PA

Speaking of TN, has anyone seen @gayoldlady? First you guys have to face Marsha Blackburn and now this. Ugh.

Also in New Orleans. I’ve got food, water, & liquor, so that should be all right. I’ve got emergency lighting with lots of batteries, books to read, games to play. I got through the last power outage playing endless games of backgammon against myself. Just wish I had a generator to run the AC.
