Trump Praises “Miracle” Of Las Vegas Police Response

The miracle of smoke alarms:

President Trump said Tuesday it was a “miracle” how quickly the Las Vegas police were able to respond to the mass shooting that left nearly 60 people dead on Sunday night.

Trump made the remarks on the eve of his trip to Las Vegas on Wednesday, when he is expected to meet with victims’ families and first responders.

The attack has reignited the gun debate among lawmakers in Washington, D.C., with a number of Democrats calling for stricter gun regulations.

The quotation marks are classic Trump weirdness.

      • ByronK

I looked at the timeline from the first shots to the LVPD entering the hotel room. It was a 72 minute miracle.

        • Nowhereman

And the shooter was the one who stopped it by killing himself.

          • clay

            A miracle!
            /s

Trump’d probably call retirees committing suicide “a miracle of health care savings.”

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

It’s miracle he fucking doesn’t wear his fatass pants on his goddamn head

          • Nowhereman

            I laugh, but it hurts.

          • Prost Seattle

I wish these murder suicides would swap the timeline.

  • boobert

There might have been a chance an armed person who was a crack shot might have been able to stop the perpetrator at previous mass shootings. If a thousand people had guns at that LV concert , no one could have got him. This has put the situation on a different level.

    • clay

People in the crowd were trying to steal the shotguns from the cop cars, not that a shotgun would do any good at 400 ft uphill.

      • Karl Dubhe

True, but it would have been good for moral to hear shots being returned.

        /s

        • clay

I’m afraid that would be indistinguishable from shots within the crowd.

          • Karl Dubhe

            missed the /s? 🙂

          • clay

No, people were already scattering, couldn’t tell where the shots were coming from, and were terrified that the shooter(s) was(/were) in the crowd. If they had added more gunfire from more locations, it would not have helped the crowd.

      • boobert

They didn’t even know where the shots were coming from . If they just shot at the hotel who knows how many more would have been killed ?

It actually happened. At the tip of Manhattan, in New [Amsterdam] York. In 1643.

      https://assets1.bigthink.com/system/tinymce_assets/4582/original/Castelloplan.jpg?1486443864

As reported by Steven Newcomb of Indian Country Today, the Dutch, who controlled the colonial area they called New Amsterdam (later to become New York), killed 30 Lenape people in the Bowling Green area on the tip of Manhattan, and another 80 in what is now Pavonia, New Jersey. The massacre was ordered by the governor of New Netherlands, one Willem Kieft, who’d been ratcheting up the tensions with the Lenape tribe that
refused to pay tribute payments. Fearful of the large number of natives
nearby, Kieft was building up to a war and the massacre he orchestrated
      precipitated just that.

      • jmax

And Kellyanne Conway was an eye witness.

  • MikeBx2

As I said in the other thread, somehow he thinks saying that it could have been worse, makes people feel better. It doesn’t. In PR today he said something very similar. Also, calling it a miracle gives zero credit to the police, does it not? What a stupid, stupid man.

    • Nowhereman

The way he couched that in Puerto Rico it sounded like his main concern was that people don’t call this Trump’s Katrina–as if that is what is important here.

  • April

But it’s not demented for him to make that shoot someone on 5th Avenue brag of his.

  • Joe

Addressable fire alarms, how do they work? No way to be certain.

      And yes, I’m kidding.

      • Nowhereman

Oh I’m sure that the Fake News conspiracy theorists are working on it.

      • trouble94114

Old Alex Jones is going to “prove” that George Soros paid all 22,000 attendees of that concert. They were all SAG members. (At least Soros paid scale)

  • FAEN

Incompetence on a scale we have never seen before. That’s what we have in the WH. And I used to think GW was the worst. He looks like a Mensa candidate compared to this sociopath.

    • Sam_Handwich

i think W was open to taking advice (unfortunately sometimes from some scumbags like Cheney). but he still had sane people around him like Andy Card, Condi Rice, Powell, etc

Don is surrounded by yes men and/or lunatics. and is a lunatic himself.

      • Johnny Wyeknot

Condi Rice? “Who would ever have thought they would use airplanes as weapons?” Anybody with a sense of Japanese WWII history, for starters …

        • Sam_Handwich

yeah, she had her problems. but i honestly can’t bring myself to compare her with anyone in the current administration

          • Johnny Wyeknot

Okay. And she’s pretty good at the piano.

        • trouble94114

or had ever read Debt of Honor by Tom Clancy (1994) –

“However, an embittered Japan Air Lines pilot—driven mad by the deaths of his son and brother during the conflict—flies his Boeing 747 directly into the U.S. Capitol during a special joint session of Congress.”

I can’t imagine it every crossing anyone’s mind

      • BearEyes

Condo-sleaza rice? seriously? She completely missed the memo on the impending 9-11 – dismissing it as “nothing”

      • Oscarlating Wildely

W was dim, way dim, but he actually did have a council that he somewhat listened to now and then. Condi was a piece of work but you couldn’t exactly call her dim (doctorate and provost and all) but as dim on any given day as W was, he was Einstein compared to 45.

    • Insane conspiracy theory that definitely didn’t happen: Papa Bush paid off Trump to tank his presidency to make King George II look better in the eyes of history. He then made everything look like Russia’s fault.

    • Nowhereman

I’ll bet old George Bush the Younger is sleeping better these days.

  • Tawreos

And the shit-show continues. I hope Mueller finds a way to stop it soon.

  • ByronK

Tomorrow’s going to be a shit show, isn’t it?

I’m sending thoughts and prayers that he begins to suffer from impacted constipation.

    • Treant

Yes. I’m already declaring a News Filter for the day. I’ll get my news at second remove by listening for my husband’s screams.

Or I’ll read it here where I don’t have to listen to the incompetent, demented fuck.

      • Silver Badger

        To whom are you referring?

        • Treant

Heh, yeah, that referent is unclear. The Donald is the incompetent, demented fuck, not my husband. Who is not incompetent, but is kind of demented at times.

          • Silver Badger

I thought so, but I had to ask.

          • Cucker “Dick” Tarlson

It’s really rare to have an incompetent or demented fuck. You just have to take things into your own hands and bend them to your will.

    • Karl Dubhe

I suspect if I were there with a wounded victim or there to help a mourning friend, I’d find out its itinerary and be most decidedly elsewhere. I would not want to be in the same room with it, but especially in a case like this.

Yeah, but why should tomorrow be any different?

God stepped in, you see, and made him take his own life. Or so I’ve heard said.

Now reflect on the fact that, denied any possibility of repentance by God’s action, he’s going to Hell to be tortured for all of eternity. Therefore, God’s direct action denied the shooter free will, as well as the possible event of him spending the rest of his life helping sick kids or something like that.

Fundie logic is…well, it’s not logic.

      • Silver Badger

God made him realize that his actions made him a tool of evil. He repented and his subsequent suicide was an act of contrition. He is safe in the arms of Jesus.

One can rationalize anything. Also Fundy logic.

        • Karl Dubhe

But not those unrepentant sinners who danced to that evil secular music. Men and women together? Unmarried ones? My heart may not be able to handle such lewd behaviour.

By tomorrow he’ll be telling us what a wonderful job he himself did, preventing 59 deaths from being “hundreds and hundreds and hundreds’…..

  • ultragreen

So basically, no matter what happens, Trumpian logic works like this:

If a hurricane kills 2,000 people, we should be very thankful because it could have killed 10,000 people if the first-responders hadn’t done such a wonder job.

If a mass shooting kills only 200 people and injures 2,000 others, it was a miracle because the shooter could have killed 1,000 people and injured 10,000 others if the police had not responded so quickly.

    • MikeBx2

He thinks the way you console people is to point out how much worse it could be. Which is exactly the opposite of what you should say to someone who is hurting.

      • ultragreen

It’s like saying to someone who’s about to lose a leg because of the shooting: “You were lucky, because you could have been killed!”

      • Cackalaquiano

It totally dismisses their pain. But such an egomaniac would never get that.

The serious press–and the Democrats–should have gone after you and those like you, Hannity, YEARS AGO!

      It’s a SCANDAL they haven’t–a scandal and a crime!!

They’ve failed UTTERLY in their DUTY to protect the truth from LIARS and genuine democracy from irrational and hateful extremism!!

You’ll “name names,” will you, you evil, lying piece of SHIT??

Maybe that will FINALLY provoke them to go after and EXPOSE you and your ilk for WHAT YOU ARE!!

  • thatotherjean

Not a miracle, you dolt–trained people doing their jobs well, and a security guard who alerted officers after he was shot through the gunman’s door. I hope you’re better prepared to meet the people of Las Vegas tomorrow than you were to meet the people of Puerto Rico today, so you don’t disgrace the people of the United States, again.

If by 2019 Leo means 2018, then arguably yes. Otherwise, I’m right there witcha, dude…

        • Leo

I don’t. I’m not optimistic like the rest of y’all.

      • Leo

I’m thinking of the 12 category chart Don McGahn has from Mueller requests that Rachel put up and realized we’re at the peak of the iceberg.

They want things done methodically and correctly. If anything, I’m probably early – safer bet at this pace would be Summer 2020.

    • DaddyRay

If one gets an abortion after 20 weeks, it is almost always due to something being wrong with the baby/health of the mother.
And even if it wasn’t, these assholes have no right butting in on private medical decisions.

      • Sam_Handwich

i think they are trying to chip away at the “viability” aspect of Roe. In other words, medical advances have made care for very early births much more successful than 40 years ago.

But as you note, 20 weeks abortions are not a matter of “demand” but of necessity.

      • SoCalGal20

There was a runoff election for mayor. The younger, more progressive guy won, beating the two term incumbent.

    • Treant

Good, I suppose…but….there’s something about the look in his eyes. I don’t trust him, and he looks rather self-superior.

      • JCF

This. What were the POLICY differences between the candidates? [Anyone can see the age difference, and deduce experience difference]

        • djcoastermark

I have a , ahem, feeling, that politics in alabama are a bit different than most of the country. Either way, it is nice to see another roy moore type didn’t get into office. ( I refuse to honor some people with proper capital letters, they do not deserve it)

    • UrsusArctos

ANYONE wanting to be mayor of Birmingham has to cocky as hell. They’re taking on a city more divided than the US congress. Money’s gone down a hole for so long there that those with it are in NO mood to part with any more, even if it’s needed to keep things running. Jefferson County bankrupted itself over scam bonds on a sewer project that never got completed, so the city can’t fall back on them. Add to that if the mayor/council wants to do so much as pass gas they have to run it through the state legislature. Home rule is a joke in Alabama.

  • Ken M

So it’s gone from “pure evil, ” to a “demented shooter killing.” Nice that he suddenly calls it what it is.

I asked because of that SNL skit. I’ve never noticed or heard of it before.

      • JAKvirginia

I’ve done graphic design from the old paste-up days. Back then you knew what kerning and leading were, actual terms with actual meanings, with a form of shorthand notation for the typesetters. But, now we have the brave new world of technology where Adobe (and others) have dumbed down these terms to simple hieroglyphs with no explanation of their use or purpose. (Oops, where’s that user manual!) Fresh-faced “designers” are churned out by colleges today with no appreciation of the evolution of typographic communication since Gutenberg. Nothing chills me more than the blank expression on some newbie’s face when you ask them to “kern”.

should have been done 2 weeks ago, because tons of food have been pitched since…with no prospects of new shipments, and in many cases no means to keep it refrigerated.

      • MikeBx2

      • Lazycrockett

        • Sam_Handwich

the ones that can procure fresh supplies and feed their neighbors by whatever means necessary

at least that’s what i’ve learned by experience with tropical storms, blizzards, etc, and my local eateries.

      • TJ

It means being able to use food stamps for deli items in grocery stores. It was approved immediately in Texas after Harvey. Only applied for the month of September.

        • djcoastermark

It is amazing how priceless food and water, had in abundance in normal times, becomes a precious commodity. Simple things we take for granted are no longer there. Officials tell you to have enough food and water for 3 days. That is nowhere nearly enough if a ‘cain hits you directly. We had enough food and water, Thanks to hub’s paranoia, for 2 weeks. 2 weeks, we thought we did good. What happens after that? Imagine though, Puerto Rico is going to go through months. I just cannot imagine.

          • TJ

I can’t imagine either. Smart move by hubs and you to stock that many supplies. Then there are those in Puerto Rico who did get supplies to have their home and food/water destroyed.

      • djcoastermark

I can tell you, even after a week here, the groceries had barely any food. Mostly canned/precooked goods. There were no frozen foods, no refrigerated foods, no milk, no eggs, no butter, no cheese no meats. No power for the coolers. Now imagine, weeks without. Any food would be welcome, and should be allowed with FS. The situation is dire there. Really, if you think about it, an island, how are the people going to survive ? My heart just breaks. Especially when I see the intertrolls and t rumpers bitching about it.

I’m beginning to think that she left him, he tried to bribe her with the payment, which she accepted with no intention to go back to him. Once the reality set in he had no way to feel better but to kill himself and take out as many others as possible beforehand.

Het men who feel dumped/betrayed can go ballistic. Anecdote: when I broke up with a former boyfriend he threatened to kill me, my cat, my friends and their cats unless I met his demands. Needless to say he didn’t win me over.

Go to the cops? Happened during the 70s: the police would have asked what I’d done to the poor guy to make him act that way.

  • Max_1

    REMEMBER:
“Too early to discuss political solutions” means…
… I’m a coward with no moral fortitude to do what is best for the American people.

eg. Steve Scalise… His white supremacist anti-LGBT pro-gun lovin’ ass literally got shot off and saved by a lesbian African American because he wasn’t armed to defend himself from the “bad guy with a gun” yet, his moral fortitude is to do nothing to change the fate of the next victims lives. We’re literally pawns to cretins like Scalise and the NRA support staff in Congress… Pawns that can be taken out and eliminated from the game of life because someone like Scalise’s immoral attitude toward the American people. We can just die for all he cares… He has his (life AND healthcare), as the saying goes, and that’s fine enough for dickless wads like him.

And Puerto Rico’s full of foreigners anyway.

        • M Jackson

Ruh-Row, New tropical system forming in the Caribbean and likely to move into the Gulf of Mexico.

Tropical formation chances were 70% over next 5 days.

The Great Pumpkin President continues to show his stupidity, Not only did the smoke detectors go off, but the guy offed himself before the police even got to him. Thats no “miracle” – its the worst gun related atrocity in history. Only someone truly sociopathic would try to spin that into something positive.

  • Sam D. Maloney

Didn’t hurt that a hotel guest from two floors above the shooter called the police shortly after he heard him open fire.

    • M Jackson

It was the “miracle” of Alexander Graham Bell.

  • Bluto
  • RickCabral

A “miracle?” Who is Queenie La Cheeto quoting? Or doesn’t he believe in “miracles” as a concept? Or is he just stupid? Never mind.

  • Dicky

He is calling it a “miracle” so that he can claim that the police are so unable and so underarmed that he can float lots of laws of the law and order type and accelerate the militarization of the police.

Being booed, being killed – tough choice. Wake up, Nikki.

The country is and deserves better than you and Drumpf.

      “#HateNeverWins”

      Really? 11/8/16.

…or better yet, 12/19/16 (when the verkakte Electoral College voted).

    • KnownDonorDad

That’s almost as bad as having laws in your country that say it’s OK to kill you. Poor dear.

  • Steve Smith

I heard that it took over an hour to find the murderer. Over an hour to find someone with more weaponry than North Korea? Shooting from a hotel window? hardly “miraculous”. I think the real question is why did it take so long?

Maybe we can get an actual diplomat as Secretary of State? Could we at least get Mitt Romney?

  • netxtown

uh…donnie. the police didn’t stop him. He off’d himself.

  • Vira

Thankfully this wasn’t a REAL tragedy like 9/11.

  • Mrs. Councillor Nugent

Dolt 45, a “miracle” would be to set the clock back to election eve and have Secretary Clinton declared the proper winner

  • Jefe5084

I read where it was actually due to the help of a smoke alarm in the room. So no, white, racist Jeebus was not in on it.

  • Vinnie NYC

As Dale said in a prior post He’s a fucking moron.

  • JWC

Good morning world Donny is still an idiot

  • ColdCountry

It wasn’t a miracle, it was good police work.

  • Gianni

Donnie has a way of always finding a sliver of silver lining. Just like in Puerto Rico where they didn’t lose near the number of lives that were lost in hurricane Katrina.
