Rocker Tom Petty Dies Of Cardiac Arrest At Age 66

CBS News reports:

Tom Petty, the rocker best known as the frontman of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, is dead at 66, CBS News has confirmed. The legendary musician suffered a full cardiac arrest and was found unconscious and not breathing in his Malibu home Sunday night. He was taken to UCLA Santa Monica Hospital and put on life support, reports TMZ.

Petty rose to fame in the 1970s with his band, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The group put out several hits, including “American Girl,” “Free Fallin’,” “Breakdown,” “Listen to Her Heart” and more. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

Though Petty and his band debuted their first self-titled record in 1976, they continued to perform over the past four decades. Petty played his last show last Monday, performing three sold-out shows at the Hollywood Bowl to conclude their 40th anniversary tour. The band wrote on their website that the tour included 53 shows in 24 states.

      They’re not all dead yet.

      • matrem

Didn’t say they were. A mini reunion is still a reunion.

      • Lazycrockett

We still got Otis and Lucky.

      • SFnomad

I’m sure Dylan and Lynne don’t want that reunion any time soon.

I had to look Jeff up cause I thought he died a couple years back.

    • another_steve

I don’t sleep well and awoke at 4:00 a.m. Monday morning, unable to fall back asleep. So I put on the TV, hoping to find something boring that would lull me back to sleep.

Instead, I learned of the Las Vegas massacre.

If I wake earlier than I should, the tv is the last thing I turn to. Been shocked awake too many times.

Tom Petty, dead at 66, yet hateful troglodyte Pat Robertson is still alive. Something’s not right about that.

    • DJ John Bear

      Evil lives…

    • Yeah, I think the Reaper got the message mixed up or something. 🙁

  • RJ Tremor

Argh. This is one that hurts me, yes. Radio in the 90s included lots of Petty airplay and I fondly remember Freefallin’ and Mary Jane’s Last Dance.

  • bambinoitaliano

Don’t mind me, I’m just going to get myself a bouquet of kittens.

    • Gigi

I’m deathly allergic but still, I’d be tempted to dive right in!

      • bambinoitaliano

So do I, but I got antihistamine and boxes of tissues. My last cat took me months to adjust and only to him. Apparently one builds the immune system to each fury friend if you spend enough time with them.

        • Gigi

I tried that once. Took in an adorable kitten thinking I’d adjust. Seven hours later I was rushed to hospital in the back of an ambulance. Now, I stick to “non-allergenic” dogs.

Happy good looking ones I see.

Thanks, we love her to bits! Rescued her from a shelter about 7 years ago. She’s 14 now. Deaf as a post, had most of her teeth removed, can’t see much but still pretty spry and so much love to give. We’re proud papas!! 💓

We had to leave our rescued mutt, Sage, behind in Mexico, but she landed on all four paws. Her vets, Mr. & Mrs. Vets took her in to be a companion to their toddler daughter and she’s happy as ever. We get annual photo up dates. She’s a proud nana.

          • bambinoitaliano

That is extreme allergy. I was careful to wash my hand after and not touch my face during. I even use damp cloth to wash him once in a while. Later I could buried my face on his fur with zero issue. And he would sleep next to my head.

    • bzrd

I read an article this a.m from a surgeon who said that if everyone in Congress could see what a bullet victim looks like and watch the difficult surgery to help them live, they might change their mind and pass better gun control legislation.

      • Rebecca Gardner

Gun shot wounds are disgusting and unbelievably damaging. When I was shot it turned my left hand into hamburger. It’s a classic “don’t shoot” defensive wound. Tiny hole on my palm. Back of my hand completely blown off. All rebuilt with cadaver parts.

The surgeon is spot on. Maybe if they saw more of this, they’d finally fucking wake up. (I think was about surgery #7)

        • Damn, I am sorry you went through that. I truly am. I worked at a Walmart where there was a shooting; the victim needed over 100 units of blood in order to survive.

Something needs to be done. It’s past time.

    • whollyfool

      Thank you for posting that.

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

Sadly, this is the republican psyche in a nutshell. “I didn’t care until it affected me.” I don’t say this to take away the sincerity of the message, but to once again illustrate how empathy is something many 2nd amendment cheerleaders seem to lack.

Two weeks ago Walter Becker, now this. Dear Mr. Springsteen, please live to be 100.

        • TuuxKabin

Bruce came to mind, sorry to go there, but it just did. Maybe Ted Nugent will be the beginning of the next round. He should not be in the company of Walter Becker, and Tom Petty. Nugent. Then Kid Rock and take it from there.

          • jimbo65

And may that vile Nugent continue to go through the rest of his miserable life without obtaining his holy grail: induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

    May he rest in peace.

Not dead! Clinging to life according to LAPD!

  • canoebum

Wow. His music is on the soundtrack of my car, I hear him almost every day. A very bold and genuine talent has been lost. It especially hurts when, day after day, I see people my age suddenly dropping dead. Just waking up to see a new day has special significance for me more and more.

  • ChinChin

Awwww, man, ugh! I liked his music, I liked his friendship and musical collaborations with George Harrison (I’m a huge Beatles fan), and I appreciated him being an LGBT ally. Rest in peace, Tom. Here’s one of my favorites by him that I don’t hear very often these days, “You’re Jammin’ Me,” which is, in part, about there being no guarantees and the need to live life genuinely and in the moment. 🙁

  • Terance Greene

Just heard on news that reports are wrong he is still alive but hanging on by a thread.

  • SoCalGal20

Awwwww no! I see reports further down that he’s still hanging on but sad news.

  • Vista-Cruiser

I’ll stay away from the radio for a few days. I never could stand his whiny voice or mediocre music.

    • m_lp_ql_m

I kind of agree with you. But TP was one of those, what I like to call “talented hacks,” who inspired me in my adolescence and created so many good memories for me (when so deep in the closet, few things seem good), because I thought, “Gee, I can do that if he can.”

      • Phillip in L.A.

Tom Petty was not my personal favorite, either, but his musical accomplishments are too legion for him to be considered “mediocre” (imo)

      • and to note, he said the same about his own music.
