Trump: The Fake News Is Lying, Puerto Rico Loves Me

The Washington Examiner reports:

President Trump told residents of Puerto Rico not to believe the “fake news” media regarding the federal response to Hurricane Maria, and said the administration is “getting great marks” for its recovery efforts. Trump has been criticized for his response to the crisis in Puerto Rico, and Democrats accused the president of paying more attention to NFL athletes who kneel for the national anthem than to the people of Puerto Rico.

Earlier in the day Saturday, the president attacked San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz and said she demonstrated poor leadership as the island tries to recover. But Trump had high praise for the governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, and Rep. Jenniffer Gonzalez-Colon, two people he was scheduled to speak with over the phone Saturday from his golf resort in Bedminster, N.J.

More from Salon:

Following President Donald Trump’s latest Twitter attack, this time on San Juan mayor, Carmen Yulin Cruz, the White House suggested she may be doing too many television appearances to be part of the aid assistance efforts at the Federal Emergency Management Agency command center.

The president is scheduled to make a visit to Puerto Rico on Tuesday, and when asked if he would meet with Cruz after his derogatory and baseless claims, a White House official said, “not sure,” according to ABC News.

The official added the Cruz “has been invited to FEMA command center several times to see operations and be part of efforts but so far has refused to come, maybe too busy doing TV?”

Shorter Trump….hey they’re Puerto Ricans… They know how to clean up real good.

    • Harley

And he will even pay them in pesos.

      • TampaDink

        No he won’t.
A: He rarely pays his bills…..and B: He’s planning to screw them out of emergency funding…and expects them to repay anything that they do manage to get out of the government.

I’m still trying to understand how it’s possible that even after the release of the Access Hollywood tape, the man went on to win the presidency. I mean… how is/was such a thing even remotely possible?

Anyone – any teacher or sanitation worker or highway toll collector or accountant or lawyer – who was caught on tape saying what Trump said would have been immediately fired. I mean, like the next day.

      Please. Anyone…

How is it possible that after the release of that tape, the sexual predator went on to win the White House?

      • Steverino

Ideological tribalism trumps everything. Everything. Common sense and decency be damned.

        • Robincho

Trump is a shitty verb. It’s an even worse name…

      • UrsusArctos

OK. I take it you haven’t seen the official White House Christmas cards with that text printed in it (With an added Merry CHRISTmas)

        • another_steve

I think it goes beyond the religion thing. The deplorables wouldn’t know Jesus Christ from a hole in the wall. (Possibly NYC Jew syntax there…sorry.)

It’s more complicated than that, I think.

          More Russian.

          • UrsusArctos

I meant him sending the “Pussy grabbing” text out as his Xmas card since he didn’t (please, please, please let it be so) have pictures of him actually grabbing a pussy to use as the front of the card.

        • Nowhereman

How Christ-like…and as a atheist, it made me feel all warm and fuzzy.

      • Brian

Julian Assange and Wikileaks flooded the media with Hillary’s emails 30 minutes after the Access Hollywood tape, diluting media attention. Sick, but true. Our media has Attention Deficit Disorder.

        • another_steve

That, plus I blame Hillary and her campaign manager for not making the Access Hollywood tape a central element of her run.

I suppose the idea at the time was that her November victory was “inevitable,” so why go there. Why descend to Trump’s salacious depths.

In retrospect a terrible mistake, that.

          • Todd20036

I bet she didn’t think she needed it, and didn’t want to drag down her candidacy to that of Trump’s level.

Not sure how big a mistake it was as far as her own morals are concerned.

          • another_steve

Well, there was the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky thing.

Of course, Bill Cinton’s amoral sliminess during that episode should have had no bearing on Hillary’s run, but it did. In today’s Reality TV world of superficiality, it did. The Rethugs adeptly paraded out all of Bill’s accusers and got the media to pay lots and lots of attention to them.

That may have acted to suppress – to mute – Hillary’s reaction to the Access Hollywood tape.

          • RickCabral

Not just the pussy tape, but also the brag about walking in on women (as young as fourteen) changing, during the Miss Universe and Teen Miss Universe pageants, and the spectacle of his making fun of a reporter with Cerebral Palsy. In better times any one of those would have done him in for certain.

          • cleos_mom

But he WASN’T HILLARY. Can’t you understand that?

Spousal amoral sliminess. Pants suits. Goldmanbankstersnopenisghazi. At least we were spared those horrors.

          • another_steve

Lol. Yes, we were indeed spared those horrors.

Plus, as President she might have once again almost fainted getting into the car. Can you imagine the shame and indignity that that would have brought the U.S. on the world stage?

Fortunately, today we have a President who brings the U.S. only respect in world capitals.

          • fuow

Yes, it is – but it’s also true that we liberals didn’t vote and the deplorables did.

        • DesertSun59

I truly believe we’ve not seen anything yet.

Once Kelly is ousted or quits the REAL fun will begin. Recently, the only thing that has stood between us and complete national collapse has been Kelly.

      • marshlc

Honestly? I bet that when all is known, years from now, it will be clear that there was actual tampering with the vote.

        • fuow

Of course there was! That’s why we liberals need to start voting, all of us! It’s our only defense – to vote in such overwhelming numbers that not even the rethuglican and Russian collusion can carry them over the top.

          • BudClark

I cannot, for the LIFE of me, understand the snowflakes that voted third party, or who didn’t vote. Anybody with an OUNCE of sense could see the MASSIVE shit-storm coming if The Dumpster Fire won. Like with climate change, I wonder if we haven’t passed the Point of No Return politically. Even if The Dumpster Fire were to be removed TOMORROW, it will take us GENERATIONS to recover from the racists / Luddites / Know Nothings, etc. that he has coaxed from under their respective rocks. OTOH, the cynical side of me says that enough poor, white Republican voters will be killed off if the Republican Deathcare bill ever passes, that THEY won’t be a problem.

I’m old, and I’m TIRED. I’m going back to BED.

      • Skokieguy [Larry]

Prior to that – the day he announced and told us Mexico is sending rapists, in a remotely sane world THAT would have been enough to be disqualifying. That’s why, even when Trump is gone, I fear for our nation because the careful stoked hatred and divisiveness the Republican party has used for years was turned up to a fever pitch by Trump and its not going to go away, it will intensify when he is removed from office.

        • another_steve

          And now, Puerto Rico.

Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the United States. Trump is giving the Democratic Party endless ammunition with which to forever capture that demographic. In several key states, that could make a big difference.

Now…if only the Democrats can find some skilled strategists to fully utilize this gift that Trump is giving them.

      • FAEN

Comey really fucked her and the momentum.

          • FAEN

What was it 11 days before the election? How could he not know it would have an affect?

          • JackFknTwist

He knew what effect it would have on the election – but he was afraid of his own position if he revealed it later. Just typical of the insecure professional, who in a crucial dilemma opts to cover his own a ss rather than stand by duty and responsibility to protect the democratic process.

          • FAEN

Yep! And look what he helped get us-a Nazi with no experience.

      • Joseph Miceli

Republicans efforts to dumb down America succeeded. They are now voting …not for the most capable statesman…but the most ENTERTAINING and charismatic candidate. They behave and in the back of their minds believe that public office is like American Idol. The fourth wall broke in the wrong direction and I’m not sure if there’s a way back. Just today we were seriously considering Oprah for President. Really? Give me a fucking break!

        • fuow

At least she actually is a competent businessperson.

          • Joseph Miceli

Which I do not feel is a qualification for president . If you want to government like a business then you screw people over for money . Government and business are not the same things .

        • cleos_mom

And don’t forget “excitement” and “passion”. Maybe the next Democratic POTUS candidate should campaign on “Adderall For All” and be done with it.

          • Joseph Miceli

Will you start handing it out at Goldman Sachs ? No wait… we can start handing it out at the White House

          • cleos_mom

OMG, imagine Mitch McConnell or Louie Gohmert doing that. You’ll either laugh or give up food for the day!

        • another_steve

Excellent excellent point, Joseph. The “Reality TV-ing” of America is a real thing. A real phenomenon.

It got Donald Trump into the White House.

        • BudClark

I don’t find The Dumpster Fire’s horror show “entertaining” at ALL.

          • Joseph Miceli

From your mouth to gods ears .

      • fuow

Simple. Same reason LePage kept winning In Maine – we on the left don’t vote. The rethugs do.
We fall in love, they fall in line.
We only accept the perfect, they settle for the good enough.
We demand a candidate on our side pass the purity test for our own special interest or it’s no-way, uh-uh. They don’t mind flawed and imperfect.
        That’s why we lost.
I sometimes read through the old threads leading up to the 2016 election and it is just beyond words how arrogant and self-satisfied so many gay men around here were. They were above all that proletarian exercising the franchise stuff – If they couldn’t have Bernie, they’d ‘teach’ us a lesson we’d never forget.
One silver lining in these dark clouds – all those Millennials who went on and on about how evil we Boomers are and how we’d all soon be dead – they’re going to have to live with the consequences of their non-votes or ‘Green’ votes for far, far longer than we will. That’s a bit of sweet justice.

        • another_steve

I agree with everything you say there, fuow.

Bernie Sanders is, I believe, a good and honorable man – but the energy and enthusiasm he and his supporters drained away from the only Democrat running who had a chance, Hillary Clinton, helped sink her.

I’m not much into “shaming.” I reserve the practice only for special occasions.

Any registered Democrat who didn’t vote in November for Hillary Clinton should today feel shame.

          They helped elect Donald Trump.

      • DesertSun59

Here’s how. The people who voted for him share his mental illness. The only thing that has EVER staved off a full fledged fascist state in the US is good people voting. There has always been a large swath of delusional people in this nation. After all, witness the enormous number of people who are absolutely in love with grifting televangelists. This time it didn’t matter about the good people because the electoral college screwed us all.

        • another_steve

Re the Electoral College, had Robby Mook and Co. been thorough and cautious and not taken anything for granted, they would have conducted daily polling in the key Electoral College states. They would have known where they needed to devote campaign time and energy.

          I mean…duh.

Some of what I say there can be criticized as Monday morning quarterbacking, but presumably the people who head up runs for the U.S. Presidency know their stuff and are prepared for all eventualities.

          Presumably.

      • Galvestonian

Simple — he went under a Republican flag, had the Russians flubbering the whole damn election, he lied about everything, absolutely bombed any opponents, promised the impossible & deceived the majority & twisted the facts. Plus he broadcast the fact that he is a white power candidate and a bigot.

    • Cattleya1

W was detached during Katrina, but he didn’t attack any mayors or governors. Obama stayed in the Whitehouse and managed relief or went to the disaster areas promptly (and hugged Chris Christie)… Twitler, I hear is at his golf course in NJ… I spent last night emptying bowls and buckets underneath the holes in my roof which Irma left. While I wish their residents no ill, If on Tuesday, Airforce 1 were to overshoot PR and land on St. Helena, it would be OK by me. Especially if they left Tangerine Tojo behind.

Interview with Howard Stern. Donnie describes how there’s a ball at Mar A Lago, and this old guy falls down. There’s blood, he’s unconscious, and Donnie, along with all the other rich people, turn away and say ‘That’s disgusting!’ according to Donnie, anyway.

        Much laughter in the studio.

Then he goes on about how ‘The Marines’ came from back of the room and got the old guy out of there, getting blood everywhere. Apparently blood is hard to get out of marble floors?

At the end he’s asked if he would have sex with a woman who’s menstruating, and he says ‘Well, I mean, I think we all have.’

          • vorpal 😼

Glad to hear you are feeling better, but sorry about your computer :(… should we be scared to lose your fantastic comments here should that happen?

My work laptop screen has a massive growing crack on it… I fell asleep on the couch and it fell a piddly distance onto a carpeted floor. I swear they don’t make these MacBooks like they used to, because my previous one survived 3.5 years of me and kept on going.

The crack went from about 3 cm to now about 10 cm, and has rendered around 50% of the screen unusable since all the pixels vertical / horizontal to the crack are now a complete mess.

Fortunately, I’ll be getting a shiny new personal laptop this coming week.

          • BudClark

We went through that with not ONE, but TWO H-P laptops. Fortunately, they were BOTH still under warranty (gifts from a VERY generous friend, when we were down to one working computer). It was a TINY notebook, and I couldn’t see to use it at all. Several years before he died, my husband Burgie gave me a HUGE graphics screen that will display two 8.5 x 11 pages side by side, so I could work on music scores more easily. NOW, I use it to jack the print size of everything to GINORMOUS so I can see to read. Sadly, I think my eyesight (and hearing) are BOTH failing.

          • zhera

I’ve been gone for ten days now. Had to take the computer in for service and the phone doesn’t like disqus. I’m back but I don’t know for how long; they did some stupid shit with the computer and I’m pissed off!

Quick question: MacAffee versus Norton, what is better?
I had Norton and was happy with that, but the service guys turned off Norton and installed MacAffee. I did NOT ask for this. They also installed some other shit I didn’t ask for.
Now I’m struggling with turning Norton back on, because I’m not a computer wiz and actually now near nothing about these things.

          • vorpal 😼

Welcome back, zhera! It’s good to have you with us again!

Ugh… why do they mess with computers like this? Seems totally inconsiderate and unnecessary.

I wish I could offer more, but I’m the wrong person to ask about this… I haven’t used a windows computer in years so I haven’t kept up with antivirus software. Back in the day, I preferred McAfee, but that was about a decade ago, so I’d suggest posting off-topic on a recent thread and asking. I’m sure lots of JMGers will be able to give you better information than I can!

Hope you don’t end up struggling too much :(.

Toxic Donald is a shit stain, not a president.

He left the White House for his private golf club on Thursday evening.

When his secret service and other government retinue have to pay to say at his private clubs, the money to pay for their stays comes out of the taxpayers and goes into Trump family bank accounts.

So the piece of crap has a financial incentive to leave D.C. and go to his private club on Thursday night.

So far, Puerto Rico is using a good strategy for the solicitation of assistance from the Trump administration, although they may be doing this accidentally.

That is, the governor of Puerto Rico is playing the role of the good cop (white hat), while the major of San Juan is playing the role of the bad cop (black hat). In this strategy, the good cop (governor) requests help from the Trump administration, but if the Trump administration doesn’t cooperate sufficiently well, then the bad cop (the mayor) unleashes a torrent of criticism and threats if more assistance is not forthcoming. These two roles, if they are coordinated properly, can maximize cooperation and assistance from the Trump administration in the interests of Puerto Rico.

  • MikeBx2

Have we heard anything directly from the “Congresswoman” he mentions? She doesn’t seem to have a twitter account. Is she really praising Trump after he’s tweeted statements like “they want everything done for them”?

  • Tawreos

The White House suggested Mayor Cruz “may be doing too many television appearances to be part of the aid assistance efforts” and suggests she follow Mr. Trump’s lead and spend more time golfing.

He misspelled the name of PR Rep Jenniffer González-Colón, which I guess is easy enough to do. Until this week I knew nothing about her, and have since learned that she’s a Republican. https://twitter.com/RepJenniffer/status/913866419389026305

I looked up Canóvanas, and found that as of 2011 its population was over 48,000. So the 225 aid packages are a nice gesture, but may not stretch far enough.

And that’s all well and good, but it should have happened on DAY ONE, or even before.

      • Joe in PA

Exactly, they knew at least 4 days before to expect a direct hit.

        • BobSF_94117

Well, no, not four days, but probably two. Plus STT had already been hit to give an example of the damage possible and what was needed most (diesel, water, diesel, food, diesel, and gasoline).

          • Joe in PA

Hmm, can’t find the source just now, but I read (I know I know, I read it on the internet) that the NOAA provided that. But yea.

          • BobSF_94117

No one can predict a hurricane’s path four days out. There are models and “spaghetti maps” with possible paths. A lot of people in the days before Irma said it would turn north. I was watching the blog posts at Wunderground right up until power went out — it’s where nerdy meteorologist types go to chat. For two days before Irma, every time some CNN type said “it’s expected to turn north”, I’d scream at the TV, “BUT IT ISN’T TURNING NORTH ENOUGH!!!!!!”.

The day before Irma, I was sure it was going to be a lot worse than expected. I took out a bunch of cash. The group of friends and their relatives I harbored for the storm worked like dogs to get ready, boarding up and securing everything. The wall passed just a few miles from my house, not the 40-50 miles that had been predicted.

With Maria, it was the same but in the other direction. The models on the news were saying it would pass to the south of STX by tens of miles. But the chatter on Wunderground monitored by a friend in the states and transmitted to me by satellite text showed it scraping STX, far closer to us in STT than expected.

At that point, with a Cat 5 barrelling down on PR, the WH should have mobilized the military for a huge disaster.

          • Joe in PA

hmmm, where nerdy meteorologists go to chat eh?

          • BobSF_94117

I’m on the east end of STT. We’ve been without phone/internet for most of the last three 1/2 weeks, since Irma. Even when we had it in the last week or so, it was limited to text and lost phone connections.

(One bright side, no Trump news for weeks!!!)

I spent Irma in a bathroom with five dogs in crates, behind two sets of doors screwed shut with 2x4s and hurricane windows and plywood over them.

My house is all concrete, at least 12 inches thick, with a roof of 4×10 trusses tied into the concrete. I was in the basement, two floors down. Concrete buildings are not supposed to shudder and vibrate. But they do.

          • Silver Badger

Thanks for the update. I’m glad you got through it. Did you use earplugs for the dogs? silly me. I also just realized that BobSF probably not referring to San Francisco, but Southern Florida.

What would nuclear subs do in Puerto Rico? There ain’t no electrical grid to hook up to.

      • Joe in PA

I think there point is that it can generate electricity. Dunno how that actually helps…like they are going to plug in their hair dryers to the ship or something?

One hopes they could light up the runways so night flights can take place.

          Little things mean a lot.

    • Gianni

That may very well be. The problem is that there is no coordination, no real effort made to get the necessities delivered where they need to go. It’s all no use if it just sits in port unable to be distributed to the interior and outer reaches of the island. I’ve watched the news videos and I surely expected to see military personnel swarming over the island and cargo helicopters moving through the skies to deliver the goods where needed. None of that is happening. The roads need clearing so truck traffic can get through. Trump wants to pat himself on the back, for the umpteenth time, but the truth is that he was all flustered and upset over the unimportant nonsense about football players kneeling, etc. He can deny it all he wants, but blasting the NFL and the players was his primary concern and not the hurricane ravaged American islands. Then he tries to make it about not respecting the flag, the anthem, the military, and first responders. Strange he didn’t include mom and apple pie on that disrespected list. The man is a juvenile abomination as our President.

      • JAKvirginia

And just to add, everybody in the friggin world knew that ‘cane was going to hit PR days before it did. Why wasn’t the military on alert and prepared? That’s what real grown up CIC’s do.

        • Gianni

That’s the most pertinent question. A category five hurricane bearing down on those islands and no one, including the mastermind, could figure that it might be a good idea to make preparations for the aftermath. WTF can one say?

300,000 tons sounds like a lot, until you realize it’s food, water, medical supplies for 3,5 MILLION people. How much does one 1 liter water weigh? And how much water does 1 person need PER DAY?

300,000 tons is nothing. And since this was on facebook, I wouldn’t believe it anyway.

      • UrsusArctos

        1 liter of water = 1 kilogram± (2.2#)

      • Bluto

If the entire tonnage was water it would equal 36 mill gallons of water (8.34lb/gal), or 10.2 gallons per person. Of course water is only a fraction of the supplies so considerably less water/person.
The US ave water consumption per person per day is 80-100 gallons but that includes bathing & flushing. If you ask cheeto he’ll tell ya the lazy Puerto Ricans don’t bathe.

You’re correct Zhera, it’s not nearly enough.

    • ultragreen

A large portion of the supplies that have been shipped are being stored in containers and warehouses in San Juan because of the inadequacies of the distribution system in Puerto Rico.

    • Snarky

Near as I can tell, the Navy has dispatched the Comfort (hospital ship), joining the Wasp (amphibious landing craft), Kearsarge and Oak Hill, which were in the area providing help to other islands after Hurricane Irma. I don’t believe nuclear subs have been used to provide a sort of reverse shore power before, but if they have then surely the power grid conditions in Puerto Rico would make that plan useless for the next few weeks at least.

Nuclear subs are tactical weapons, hardly the kind of thing they’d have tied up in port for weeks, acting as generators.

The following is from a Northern Command press release (Northcom is the military command overseeing all efforts in the Caribbean). It shows a completely different list:

“The USNS Comfort, a seagoing medical treatment facility, is underway today and will arrive in Puerto Rico in approximately five days. The U.S. Navy ships currently operating around Puerto Rico include the USS KEARSARGE, USS OAK HILL, USS WASP and the USNS SUPPLY.

Five barges are scheduled to arrive in Puerto Rico between Sept. 29 and Oct. 5 with 2.5 million liters of water, 3 million meals, two generators, and
Eight C-17s are arriving in Puerto Rico to provide the following
      :
      • Food and water for 250,000 local residents

      • Larger-scale, long-term management to receive the increasing flow of federal personnel, equipment and supplies
USNORTHCOM’s mission is to assist lead federal relief agencies in helping those affected by natural disasters to minimize suffering while continuing its mission of defending the Homeland.”

Source: Northcom press release dated 9/29 http://www.northcom.mil/Newsroom/Press-Releases/Article/1330270/updateus-northern-command-continues-humanitarian-aid-to-puerto-rico-and-the-us/

      • Joe in PA

        Thanks!

        • Snarky

          Any time, babycakes!

      • Bluto

Yes, Snarky. From what I’ve read about nuke subs supplying power to shore it was attempted once decades ago but abandoned & never tried again. There are no known Navy protocols for doing such, info is classified.

Even if so, a large amount of energy produced would be required for the sub’s coolant systems & operations, even while docked. Supplying onshore power would be a very inefficient & insufficient use of a sub’s power plant.

    • ultragreen

As for using the electrical generating power of nuclear submarines to supply electricity to civilians, they are not designed to do that. This idea has been examined in the past for an island in Hawaii after it was hit by a typhoon, but the plan was abandoned as unfeasible. I’m not certain if the capabilities of nuclear submarines have changed since 1982. Here is a discussion of this matter:

“Can you run a town off electricity from a nuclear powered submarine? How much electricity can nuclear subs produce?”

Dave Corley, former nuke sub officer (3 SSNs)
      Answered May 1, 2012″Well,….
      …it
was considered. In 1982, the Hawaiian island of Kauai was hit by
hurricane Iwa. The island’s principal power generating station was
incapacitated for several days. A plan to dispatch a US nuclear
submarine from Pearl Harbor was considered, but abandoned. US Permit-,
Sturgeon- and LA-class nuclear propulsion plants include a shore-power
connection, by which 60Hz ac electrical power is supplied from a “shore”
source to the boat when the nuclear power plant is shut down.
Approximately 2 MWe, 60 Hz, 120vac, un-grounded power can be generated
by the twin SSTGs (steam-powered turbine generators) when the reactor is
operating. During full power at-sea operations, this power is required
to run Main Coolant Pumps and other equipment. When the ship is not
making way, power requirements are substantially less than capacity. In
theory, this over-capacity while inport could be delivered off-hull
through the boat’s shore-power connection. There are protective
mechanisms on this distribution circuit that would normally prevent
reversing the current flow, though. At the time, there were no published
operational procedures for enabling such a capability. The plan to
supply ac electrical power to the island was abandoned.”

The main reason most people, including the mayor of San Juan, has said anything negative is because the WH spent three days patting itself on the back with ridiculous superlatives about what a fantastic job it has done. No one normal does that.

    Jesus, what a fuck-wad.

    • vorpal 😼

Only Trump would take a massive crisis where people are dying and make it all about himself and how incredibly great he is.

      It’s just astonishing.

Even the one friend I have on Facebook who has been a rabid Trump supporter has had nothing to say in response to my posts over the last month about our Bigly Leader.

I was going to say “Going after the Khans”…but I think that was earlier? Going after (Drumpf’s words) “Miss Piggy/Miss Housekeeping”? Yeah, that’s going to be my guess…

        • DonnaLee

You kind of have to go by whatever day the tweet came out, goodness knows it could be referring to 10 things from yesterday.

      • bambinoitaliano

All of the above since the day he was born.

      • ultragreen

She criticized Trump for being the figurehead of the ‘birther movement’ that claimed Obama was born outside of the US, therefore not a US citizen and not eligible to be president of the US. Trump finally retracted his birther claims in mid-Sept. ’16, agreeing that Obama was born in the US, but he then claimed that the Clinton campaign was responsible for spreading the ‘birther rumor’ against Obama in the first place. Clinton responded that this wasn’t true and she stated that his behavior was disgraceful.

        • MikeBx2

Almost seems mild compared to the horrible things he’s done since.

        • Silver Badger

And it was. Thank you for the information.

      • DoctorDJ

Right? To which tDumpfuckupary was she referring at the time?

A year later, the list has grown by leaps and bounds.

      • lymis

It’s dated September 16, so it’s not about Puerto Rico. I’m sure I’d agree that whatever she’s referring to WAS a disgrace. We all need a significantly enhanced vocabulary for despicability, because even for Trump, this Puerto Rico response is an unusual low.

    • Joe in PA

She needs to have that in cache so she can paste it easily. Every fucking day, maybe more. 🙁 Sigh.

  • zhera

Remember Benghazi? Committee after committee, hearing after hearing, to put the blame on Hillary Clinton when everyone knew where the blame really belonged.

How many hearings and committees will this bring? In a GOP controlled House: Zero.

Oh, and Donnie, I’m pretty sure the people on Puerto Rico don’t need to watch/read the news (are they even getting any news?) to know that they’re DYING.

The point is -with approximately 120 of 160 cell towers down and assuming not even battery recharge for devices. It’s definitely not Puerto Rico -Schlump, is reaching out his hand of friendship and aid to. Please take- he and his family -to the worst area on the island , fence it and leave them for ten days to fend for themselves. All would be dead from exposure!

    • Scout
      • He says to people who have no electricity, almost no cell service (~13% of towers working), and certainly no cable TV.

I know: These tweets aren’t directed at the people of PR. He wants them to die and be forgotten. What he’s desperate for is praise from his own peeps.

        • David Walker

Not exactly working. Oh, you mean THOSE peeps. Sorry. I’m still in the “we’re all US citizens, fuckface” mode. I stopped with the “we’re all human” mode a while ago. Even I now know better than that.

Out of curiosity I clicked over to Fox News…..yeah I know. Reason being, I don’t think he’s on the golf course.

They’re interviewing an “economist” from the National Review talking about Trump’s tax plan. Apparently the take away is taxes will be so much easier to file, what with that postcard sized form. And yes the wealthy will make money but that’s only because we have a progressive tax system.

Now they’re talking about the rock fall in Yosemite. Which I gotta say, the size of the fall was truly astounding. They say it was the equivalent of a 37 story building.f

The ticker along the bottom does have some info re; Puerto Rico.

The serious press–all serious journalists–should have gone after Fox YEARS ago!

For a quarter of a century, the MSM have feared being called biased by the right if they simply stand up for the TRUTH. Meanwhile, the right-wing propaganda machine–one of its biggest mouthpieces being Fox–tells baldfaced lies, shows obvious, flagrant BIAS on a DAILY basis, and NO ONE, except COMEDIANS and a few dedicated journalists routinely ignored by the MSM, calls them out for it!!

The DIRECT consequence of that FAILURE to stand up to the LIE machine is the current CRISIS, where having a proven and relentless pathological liar like Trump in the Oval Office is treated like nothing to get unduly upset about. “Give him a chance.” Jesus WEPT!!

      • Steverino

It is the culmination of over 35 years of demagoguery from well-funded ideological right-wing media, beginning with demonization of the word “liberal” and of “liberal” (meaning anybody not far-right wing) Americans themselves, from the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and scores of their imitators and wannabes, thanks to the corporate (media) deregulation of the Reagan Administration, and the elimination of the Fairness Doctrine. Even the MSM has been cowed into submission from standing up to this meme. Why? Because even they are corporate, and “heat,” that is, phony controversy and scandal, sells more than “light,” that is, factual information and truth.

I remember when we lived in suburban San Diego County about ten years ago, I saw a car sporting a bumper sticker that read: “I DON’T TRUST THE LIBERAL MEDIA.” And I thought to myself, you know, I agree- because how can you trust something that no longer exists?

        • David Walker

The demonizing “liberal” reminds me…when I was doing some research on the local connection with the Underground Railroad, I read excerpts from editorials and speeches which used “abolitionist” exactly the same way.

          • Steverino

Also, the demonizing of “liberal” was originally a dog-whistle for “Jew.”

    • Gianni

FUX News has been having a terrible time since Donnie was elected, finding anything factually positive to report about him. It’s all such negative news that they go out of their way to cover anything else and also hype his ‘Fake News’ rants and tout any Dem conspiracy theory their pathetic Republican minds can conjure. They are secure in the knowledge that their idiot listeners will swallow all the shit they can toss out to them. It is no wonder that polls have shown that FUX listeners are the least well informed of any news audience.

Like when he could not admit there just weren’t enough votes to pass Trumpcare last week. He kept insisting there WERE, and then invented a sick GOP Senator being in the hospital as to why it couldn’t pass. But he still insists there are enough votes.

Basically, the delusions are becoming more elaborate, more divorced from reality, and more unhinged.

    • Ken M

I cannot believe he referred to the Governor as “Ricky.” Anybody else hearing “I Love Lucy?” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZlLQLFq_H4

    • But he can’t. He appears completely incapable of ignoring an insult, slight, or criticism.

One of the single most powerful motivators for the pathological narcissist is avoidance of shame. (And of course, an insatiable appetite for positive attention and praise.) For anyone in any position of notice or importance to say he’s fucked up and doesn’t care triggers that panicked shame-avoidance reaction—and he attacks. He can’t NOT attack back.

Us nobodies out here, he doesn’t care about. But seeing the mayor of San Juan on TV, repeatedly—a woman of color, no less, and Hispanic—criticizing him is intolerable to him. He cannot leave it out there, so he has to make it HER fault there’s no electricity, no trucks, no fuel for trucks if they had them, and thus no food or water for millions of Puerto Rican Americans.

Notice the difference in how he behaves as long as a person doesn’t criticize him, as the governor of Puerto Rico avoided doing at first. It’s all gushing and compliments back, because he wants more. But as soon as that changes, it’ll be instant rabid dog mode again.

I just remembered that the Arecibo Observatory is in PR. I went to their Twitter site, but they haven’t posted since 9/19. However, I found this:

The pool of santorum can start by reimbursing the people of Puerto Rico the $32 million he left them holding the bag when he reneged on a loan they guaranteed for a golf course.

      • Halou

One of the several reasons why he is letting them die out there. They’re not going to give him the privilege he craves, so now that he is in power he is going to deny them the essential aid they need to survive and will keep as much of it it held back as possible until they write off his debt, and he probably wants them to pay himfor it.

        • EdA

No argument there. The Sadist-in-Chief and his enablers in the Party of the AntiChrist were quite enthusiastic about the possibility of shortening the lives of millions of “real” Americans (they haven’t given that up yet), and Benedict Trump sees nothing wrong with the prospect of killing hundreds of thousands of South Koreans even though we have troops in South Korea in order to keep ANY of them from getting killed.

OT: Done with the Christmas soap with four hours left in September! I put the last concoction to bed tonight, a midnight blue and white swirled soap scented with ylang-ylang, a sample called “Green Smoothie,” some sandalwood, and a dash of evergreen. This was the second batch made from the bargain basement tallow I got at the grocery store.

    Photos when I decant.

    • Lumpy Gaga

      “the Christmas soap”.

      Because, of COURSE!

      • Treant

Heh, with 11 weeks remaining, it’s actually too late to finish some soap varieties like Castile and Marseilles, although I could probably finish the latter if I were to cheat a bit.

Soap must cure for 4 to 6 weeks before use–minimum–and they improve with more curing time. 10 weeks, with a tallow or lard soap, makes for a very good bar. Five years makes for a stellar one, if scentless.

        • fuzzybits

Perhaps you should raffle off a batch of your favorite and donate the proceeds to what every atrocity of the day trump caused that we are trying to fix.

      • Treant

I could keep doing that, but I can’t afford that much tallow, lard, and olive oil.

          • Bad Tom

That is perfectly permissible. It allows the charitable effort to continue.

            Two questions remain:

Can the bars be priced at an acceptable point to cover expenses and make a worthwhile contribution? You have domain knowledge that can answer that.

Do you want to start doing this shit that we picked for you out of the blue?

The people of Puerto Rico shouldn’t trust their own experiences as people living, and dying, in the aftermath of a hurricane. Rather, they should trust what is said by the vacation precedent who is as of right now playing with his balls approximately 1,575 miles away.

O/T: So this happened this week:

    http://www.philly.com/philly/news/politics/presidential/in-nation-wide-immigration-sweep-ice-arrests-107-in-philly-20170929.html

    Updated: September 29, 2017 — 12:49 PM EDT

Federal authorities came knocking on the doors of 10 sanctuary cities this week, taking away nearly 500 undocumented immigrants during a nationwide four-day sweep.

The largest number of arrests took place in Philadelphia — 107 people caught in raids targeted at cities and states that seek to protect undocumented residents, or to at least treat them like everyone else who enters the justice system.

Officials with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, known as ICE, said Operation Safe City captured scores who allegedly violated immigration laws, prioritizing those with criminal convictions, pending criminal charges, or gang affiliations.

ICE arrested people who had committed sex crimes against children, sold drugs, and possessed weapons, the agency said.

Critics said that targeting Philadelphia looked like payback.

The raids came almost a month after Mayor Kenney sued Attorney General Jeff Sessions over the federal attempt to withhold grant money from sanctuary cities.

    [snip]

    • 2guysnamedjoe

Were they convicted of these alleged crimes, or accused (by whom?), or just rumors of wrongdoing?

I saw a snippet of an article that said that 2017 deportations are running BEHIND 2016 numbers, even with all the roundups of otherwise model residents.

So I decided to go to Balboa Park in San Diego today to experience some science, connect with humanity at large, and just take a break from the news for a bit.

Every time I go to Balboa Park I discover something new. Today I saw some monarchs in the butterfly garden. I went to the science center and their temporary exhibit was Game Masters. Basically a history of video games where you can play the actual games. And the arcade games were free! So for about the first time in 30+ years I played arcade versions of Pac Man, Centipede, and Asteroids. Very fun!

The Atheists had their Ask An Atheist booth which seemed quite active. There were some weddings as per usual. I stopped back by the butterfly garden and discovered something I hadn’t seen before. A bench dedicated to Harvey Milk. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/0d6b428b36769b50e0b1238fca6cca7254051f10b4935d71594b6ac77f0a490b.jpg

And I’m on my way out but the pipe organist for tomorrow’s pipe organ recital is rehearsing so now I’m getting to enjoy that for a few minutes before I leave.

/jealous . My partner lived in SD for 30 some years, and she got to take me there for an extended stay a few years ago. Got to go to Balboa Park many times. I miss it very much.

Another day, another new low. A mayor whose city is in crisis begs for help she doesn’t see coming, while little Donnie tweets insults from his golf course. Compared to this, W.’s response to Katrina is a case study in excellence.

    • AmeriCanadian

W’s response (or lack thereof) was due to incompetence. Drumpf’s is due to sadism, bigotry, racism, infantilism, narcissism, etc.

I don’t think he has that capacity. It’s all Somebody Else’s Fault.

But I do think the Senate is starting to realize how much trouble they’re in as state houses start turning Democratic, town halls become ever more contentious–or just canceled, and the 2018 midterms start to loom.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I remember the GOP autopsy told them to stop pissing off minorities. And that’s ALL Trump has been doing: shitting on non-white people, LGBT, women who don’t do the stupid thing of buying into the patriarchy, etc.

Or maybe she’s too busy trying to help the people in her town to hop on over to the FEMA command center right now?

No one in this administration can even fake some class.

    • Halou

FEMA is being denied the power to operate at full effectiveness by none other than Donald fucken Trump, so there is no point in the mayor or anyone else for that matter going to their command center.

They only fake news this country has to worry abut is what comes out of this white house on a daily basis

  • To everyone sharing links, stories, and tweets from people who are refusing to let Puerto Rico fade away in the headlines as Trump still obsesses over the NFL, “tax reform,” and whatever other BS he is using to distract himself from the plight of my beautiful island, and my family and friends that I haven’t heard from since the hurricane hit, thank you. It really means a lot, as someone who was born in PR (Rio Piedras), but moved to the States at a young age. I have friends here in New Mexico who have been donating money & goods, and are doing fundraisers and collecting donations to help out. I’m so thankful for everyone taking their time to do something to help them out.

I last heard from one of my grandparents, who’s stuck in an apartment building in San Juan, on Wednesday, haven’t heard updates on my other grandparents and cousins and other family members since the hurricane hit, and I have not heard from my girlfriend in Coamo in almost two weeks. She texted me right before they turned off all electricity on the island right before Maria hit, and I’m worried sick about her and hope that she & her family are OK.

I hate this feeling of helplessness that I have, of not hearing even an “I’m OK” from someone via text or a phone call, and I’ve had trouble sleeping from all the worry that I have for them. And our “President” would rather insult and name-call and take away attention from the crisis in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, and other islands affected by Maria. The POS would rather go on golf trips for the millionth time and insult football players, rather than give even one-tenth of a shit about my family, and so many others, back home. Distract, distract, distract is his game, but we will never forget and all of us will continue to call him out, as well as his Administration, for every despicable decision they’ve done.

    • safari

Puerto Rico’s devastation is a 50 to 100-year event, if not more. It is an unfolding horror.

      • Halou

Coupled with the undiluted once-in-eternity racism of the man in charge who knows exactly what he can do so deliberately sets up obstacles so those things aren’t done.

I hope your girlfriend is ok and that you hear from her soon. We have family on my mom’s side in Yabucoa. To date haven’t heard from them. It’s terrible. I can’t believe we have a worthless POS as president. Who would rather pick fights with his own citizens than do his damn job and do something!

      • My girlfriend’s in Coamo, and I haven’t heard any updates from that area, but have seen a few photos. I have heard very little news from Ponce, or the surrounding areas. I haven’t even heard anything about Mayaguez or other cities on the western coast. Still waiting on updates from a few people around Bayamon, etc., and our President is still going on a rant about the island. Last week, the NFL. This week? Puerto Rico. Sure loves kicking people when they’re down, and continuously kicking them…

        • jimbo65

I suspect until power and cell towers ate restored we won’t get any real reassurance that our loved ones are okay. Which by estimates could take months. Sending good thoughts and hope your way. We have to have each other’s back. This POS president can’t be bothered to pry a 9 iron from his hands to step up.

      • Halou

By the end of his time in office the word ‘presidential’ will have a whole new meaning.

Someone who goes out drinking on a friday night, downs ten or more pints then on the way home wraps the front of their car around a tree right outside the police station.. That’s presidential.

        • AmeriCanadian

I’d rather it be referred as “trumpian” instead of presidential. He may have severely tarnished the office of the president but the next occupier may be able to redeem it.

So you won’t let congresspeople go to Puerto Rico (is private travel even allowed?) using official transport and you disparage the news reports or just call them fake.

Most stories I read are grim at best. Lots of after hurricane fatalities, reports of little movement of supplies or aid, no power, little potable water.

But everything is fine and you’re the best occupier of the Oval Office EVER.

HEY ASSHOLE! Baghdad Bob called to say that you suck at propaganda!! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/5ee9b8a5f992e277b341d9ace626f36bccba199405f5a826fd1bff4c137a8b1a.jpg

    • Halou

Everybody in a hospital ICU died for lack of electricity. Not sure if they’ve been added to the official statistics yet since all the systems are still out and large areas remain difficult if not impossible to reach, I am sure that a lot more than 16 people have been left to die by the Trump regime.

      • RJ Bone

There was a Facebook post I saw from a local person who started describing what conditions are like – that the roads being impassible are one of the bigger problems, because they can’t move supplies on the ground. Seems to me that then you start placing supplies strategically and fly people in to help, but according to this fellow the military was basically at the port and not much else. The thing that struck me was that, looking at how bad the devastation was to the local flora, he felt strongly that if they didn’t do something drastic soon that it would lose livability.

*shrug* Considering it was nothing like the bullshit we’ve been getting I’m inclined to believe it. And yeah I totally agree – the fatality rate is much higher than they’re saying.

Commercial flights are available to Members of Congress and the public.

The Members can see for themselves without an Executive Branch filter.

Unless the Members don’t want to fly commercial with real people?

      • RJ Bone

They all frankly should and I know at least some do – I thought with the condition of the location that commercial flights hadn’t started again, though?

        • LesbianTippingHabits

At least limited commercial flights to San Juan resumed Sunday September 24.

          http://atwonline.com/airports-routes/faa-post-maria-commercial-flights-san-juan-puerto-rico-resume

If a Member of Congress cannot get a space on a commercial flight, well, that Member has very little clout, right?

          • RJ Bone

            Thank you 🙂

Frankly, I would favor residents, family members and first responders over congresspeople, especially since flights are limited. Clout us overused in negative ways too often.

My point was that this is an effort from the person in the White House to prevent his story from being challenged by yet another member of the Congress that is beginning to oppose him more. In his mind (such as it is) his pettiness helps him control the message for those that still take his word as truth. You have lawmakers showing up who have proof that he is lying, he loses that control. Plus, he’s a petty vindictive child who wants the optics from his Tuesday trip before other lawmakers as a whole.

This doesn’t excuse said lawmakers from finding a way into the area to do their jobs as public servants and show is what is happening, but *shrug*. I’m inclined to believe stories from residents about the amount of help they are actually receiving over Trump especially or anyone who agrees with him.

          • LesbianTippingHabits

Yes, POTUS has no credibility on this. Maria is Trump’s Katrina.

Where do the people of Porto Rica go to hand in their ‘marks’ on the president? I’m home comfortably with no weather damage of any kind and I can’t begin to think of where I’d find that.

She wouldn’t have to be on TV if help were coming. Every time she makes an appearance she is begging, literally begging for help. You are an evil, ungrateful ingrate. Now get out there and golf, because that surely is the most important thing right now.

How much are all these trips costing us again?

“Puerto Rico Loves Me”….My advice Donnie? Don’t put any money on that!

  • Somebody should inform Trump that there was a hurricane. He’s only aware that he’s being criticized.

Trump demands that the National Anthem be played at football games, and demands that everyone stands to honor the Anthem, claiming politics and football should be separate…oh, the irony.

  • Etranger

The president said the other day that all he does is work. Yet he finds time to tweet and finds time to golf. If all I did was work, I would have time for neither. as it is, I truly don’t have time for 3-4 hour rounds of golf. Haven’t been able to play in years. What a bum.
