BREAKING: HHS Secretary Tom Price Resigns

BOOM.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

Health Secretary Tom Price resigned from his Cabinet post on Friday, the White House said, after racking up at least $1 million in travel on private and military jets, a string of taxpayer-funded expenses that drew bipartisan condemnation.

The former Roswell orthopedic surgeon had lost support from President Donald Trump, who said Wednesday that he was “not happy” with his health secretary despite Price’s pledge to pay back taxpayers for part of the bill and to stop flying on chartered jets.

The White House said Don Wright, a top deputy at the department, would serve as acting secretary of Health and Human Services until a new secretary can be confirmed by the Senate.

Price’s departure came after the news outlet Politico reported in a series of stories that the health chief had taken more than $1 million in taxpayer-funded trips on private planes to locales from Africa to Georgia’s St. Simons Island.

the swamp is drained-but it’s just a beginning.

    • AtticusP

With that bunch? Price isn’t even a lily pad’s worth.

I’m hoping that Robert Mueller and Company are closing in on a lot more swamp territory.

    • Steverino

Trump & Co. exchanged the swamp for a septic tank.

  • crewman

Coming soon: Price was a lone bad apple. But firing him proves the Trump administration has the highest integrity and the least corruption in history. Period.

Tony Perkins’ spin on this will be DELICIOUS.

    • Elagabalus

Will there be one, or will he retreat into his rat hole and say nothing?

      • David Walker

He needs to determine how much money he can make out of it. Using that measure, I’m rather surprised that he hasn’t created his own “Help Puerto Rico Now” fund, except for obvious colored Catholics reason…you’d think he’d see an angle by now. I mean, into the second week and no scam yet? He’s getting old.

    • edrex

the words “tony perkin’s” and “delicious” in the same sentence creates a lot of dissonance in me.

          • Goodboy

            Yeah, snark.

          • Gustav2

I am actually very happy when people use my legal name and not the many variations they make up.

          • Goodboy

Unless those people also hate you for having that legal name.

          • glass

So are you telling me I have to stop calling you horse dick?

          • Grumpy Old Man

When callers use my legal name, I know they are no one I know.

        • BlueberriesForMe

Now there’s someone we haven’t heard from in a while.
          I’m really sad about that.

      • Librarykid

Speaking of Gad, I take particular delight that Price lost his job on Yom Kippur, the Day of Judgement. “Price” goeth before a fall and arrogance before an ass kicking.

    • bambinoitaliano
      • Lizard

I am such a fucking asshole for laughing at that. In my defense, I was picturing it as Tony Perkins.

Isn’t that how Thomas Peters crippled himself?

        • northern_neighbour

Ooh, that is a low and very sly punch below the belt!
Your memory banks are sharp and keen. Peters has been off our gaydar for quite a while now.

But of course I don’t think his manly bits work or feel quite the same down there any more for Thomas, who survived, and apparently didn’t realize that some kinda Karma had struck at him.

Nonetheless it seems that he is still getting his Obama care health needs funded, and we have heard nothing about him for the last 3 or so years. But I am sure he is still rooting for the Obamacare Repeal, no?

Bryan Brown, that WORLD FAMOUS Christian Martyr at NOM could not afford to keep his fanatically Papist side kick on the payroll, not after Gawd had been too busy to swoop in and break his stupid swan-song dive into a shallow unknown pool of murky water.

We should all have a moment of silence, here, for the luckless Thomas, but as they say, “The Lawd worketh in ways, so so so mysterioso!” He probably had a plan all along for Thomas, and that’s a comfort, no doubt.

    • Grumpy Old Man
  • Lazycrockett

So Wright is like 20 people below Price, and hes promoted????

    • SoCalGal20

They must have had to dig deep to get a Trump loyalist. Happened at OGE too. When walt Schaub resigned, there was a woman who was next in line and Trump jump over her to get to some Trump lackey in the office. Schaub predicted that’s what was going to happen on Rachel’s show and then it happened!

Gotta love all these “best people” that Trump keeps hiring.

  • Eric Lewis

I wonder if he’s flying home commercial ?

  • PickyPecker
  • Gee, and after he promised to pay back the government for those flights! Although he just meant for his seat on those flights, not the total cost he racked up by chartering those flights. You know, like the plane and the pilot, and the fuel, etc.. Funny. He didn’t seem to think a million dollars was a lot of money, until it came to paying it back.

    • Reports I’m seeing are that Donald was pissed at Price’s $50k offered pay-back when the cost for the private flights was over $1m.

Mind, Donald will never pay back a penny of the money he’s been plundering. But he’s always happy to put other people on the hook.

      • Joe in PA

Dang, there is not enough coverage of the $1M he promised to Harvey victims. That will just fade away.

Is there any administration in history with this many high-level resignations this quickly?

      • popebuck1

Only the Vader regime in “Empire Strikes Back.”

        • Dagoril

I don’t think having your trachea crushed counts as “resigning” hehe.

          • Kruhn

The Vader HR method works! No pesky paperwork, no unemployment insurance claim. You’re choked!

          • popebuck1

Hey – you have your HR procedures, Vader has his.

    • The_Wretched

The Yates / Comey / Bharara was obstruction of justice. I’m pretty sure I’d be happy to have Yates & Bharara back in government.

    • + ALL OF THE US ATTORNEYS (when Bharara was fired, in an attempt to cover up the blatant obstruction going on)

While it’s normal for a new President to replace all the US Attorneys over time, it has never been normal to fire all of them, all at once, effective immediately. Local offices are still crippled w/out replacement nominees.

      • David Walker

That’s because 45 is such a trailblazer, so visionary, so much of a dirtbag that he, Beauregard, and so on didn’t have to worry about being brought up on charges for anything. I really hate the new Murka.

    • narutomania

At this point, the Drumpf Presiduncy is not just some massive train wreck. It’s a train on fire going off a trestle at break-neck speed and about to crash into another train that is carrying car after car of highly explosive fuel. And overrun with pirates. And piloted by zombies.

Poll: Democrat Jones Within Striking Range Of Moore In Alabama Senate Race
    (caution, read the rest)

“Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore (R) leads former U.S. Attorney Doug Jones (D) by 50 percent to 45 percent in a poll released Friday by campaign handicapper Decision Desk HQ, a fairly tight race.

Individual poll results should always be taken with a grain of salt, and this poll conducted by Opinion Savvy Research was only in the field for two days, shorter than the three-day stretch many reputable pollsters insist on. The only other recent public surveys of the race, from Emerson, found Moore up by a wide margin in one and Jones within four points in another, so more polling will be helpful to get a clearer picture of whether or not the race is truly competitive.”

    http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/poll-democrat-jones-within-striking-range-of-moore-in-alabama-senate-race

    • Treant

Unfortunately -5 is still losing. And if it’s +0.1 or less, Moore still wins when they flip the votes to Republican.

    • SoCalGal20

Think I’ll send a little money to Jones. It would be awesome if there was an upset in December.

  • pj

    another trumpski hits the curb.

  • This is the power of the 1st Amendment and a free press. Without professional journalists, we probably would never have learned just how much Price was soaking the American taxpayers for his luxury junkets.

Politico broke this particular story, and 10 days later, a cabinet secretary is GONE.

Next up will be Pruitt, Mnuchen, Zinke, Shulkin, and of course all of Donald’s hellspawn adult children.

    • I’m also kind of hoping this draws more of a spotlight on President Dotard’s near-weekly multi-million dollar vacation travel.

I wish child protective services would snatch Barron out of the orange horror’s grasp and never give him back.

But then who will I call Dinky and Munchkin?

Well, I guess there’s always Sessions.

      • America’s own racist house-elf.

    • Damned if I can figure why Donald thought Price could make Trumpcare pass in the Senate. The reasons it couldn’t are endemic to the GOP Senate majority itself.

      • Treant

Because that way, the inevitable collapse and failure was Price’s fault and Trump can avoid having to completely blame himself or taking any tiny portion of that blame.

      • bambinoitaliano

The shit gibbon will blame the caddies for any of his failure.

    • SoCalGal20

      What about Pruitt?

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

        Ugh ! Him too!!

        • SoCalGal20

He’s one of the most egregious and it’s not being talked about enough. What the fuck does he need an 18-person security detail for? “Hey EPA agents, you’re no longer in the field. You’re my personal security detail now!” WTAF? Also, a soundproof room in his office? Is that so he can have illegal meetings with polluters? Is he paranoid? Who knows?!

No, Yes, Undetermined. He won’t bother with her if he thinks that drawing attention to her might result in help for PR.

He’s said he’s GLAD that only 16 people have lost their lives so far in PR. GLAD that only 16 people have DIED, he thinks because of his “influence” that more would have died… he’s literally with out conscience, morals or empathy. #NOTMYPRESIDENT

        DUN dun-dun-dun-dun dun dun dun,
        DUN dun-dun dun dun dun.

  • Tomcat

It seems like all these republicans want to use this as the opportunity to take their wives on that wild wonderful vacation they have promised for so long.
And what better than to do it on our dime.

    • Hell, they weren’t gonna do those trips UNTIL it was possible to make us all pay for them.

      • Tomcat

I really though Price was getting great information on American health care from all those countries,Ha Ha Ha.

  • boobert

So the way to really piss off the dotard is to give more press to one of his staff ! Works every time , lol.

    • shellback

So what you’re saying is, for example, if we make a big whoop-dee-do over someone like Sarah Huckleberry Hound, the NAZI may shit can her? Gee, maybe we should look into this.

      • boobert

Probably ! So far, everyone that got canned was getting more press than him. bannon, mooch, flynn, price, spicer, preibus, comey, yates, etc.

        • Lars Littlefield

Quick! Someone make a Huckabell sex tape. Include lots of farm animals.

          • geoffalnutt

They’d have to be dead for it to be believable.

  • Professor Barnhardt

He’s an orthopedic surgeon. If he moves to Aspen, he can triple whatever his salary was as Secretary of HHS.

  • Cuberly

Does this mean the HHS executive lunchroom isn’t getting recommissioned?

Wow, when Fox interviewed Price he came across as if he could care less about the whole kerfuffle. That’s one cold fish.

  • Jerry Kott

You are not going to drain the swamp by filling it with human waste- a Law of the Universe.

    • -M-

      Overflow the swamp!
      / MAGAts, basically.

  • Rebecca Gardner

So how many people leaving or getting fired does this make it now? This Administration is a complete clusterfuck.

  • Cuberly

And breitbart has already begun the swamp being drained spin. They’re gnashing their teeth in joy. Quite a few calling for Zinke and Pruitt to get canned as well.

    • The_Wretched

Donny the Unfit isn’t that consistent. I rather the media now focus on Mnuchin and get him gone.

      • Cuberly

Actually some want Mnuchin gone as well.

But yeah, Mnuchin is a freaking douche.

      • Tomcat

        Definitely.

      • kareemachan

        Sessions, too.

    • Tomcat

it is not draining the swamp by firing the same people you hired.
That is just rotating the swamp.

      • Cuberly

Well, staffing your cabinet with candidates put forward by major corporate interests w/ deep corporate ties…..the entitlement runs DEEP.

      • M Jackson

Swamp rotation calls for soybeans to be appointed next.

    • Lars Littlefield

I’d love to see Zinke be tossed out with this week’s trash.

      • Cuberly

        lol….I wonder why…lol….(just a snarky jab there.)

Yeah he’s beyond problematic his snide dismissal yesterday re; his travel was disgustingly entitled.

  • Lazycrockett

So Price’s number now gets added to the “secret” phone that Kelly doesn’t have access to.

    • Treant

But that Mueller had tapped six months ago.

  • Our reminder that the Senate Republicans NEVER should’ve confirmed Price in the first place:
    https://twitter.com/RVAwonk/status/823923841542062080

This doesn’t even mention the part where he was under investigation for insider trading on health industry stocks while he was a member of the House committee in charge of health policy.

    The GOP is complicit.

    • Cuberly

But he was the candidate drug companies put forward. He was their guy. Gotta keep the donors happy.

Of course you’re right, but the GOP could care less.

    • Rebecca Gardner

I posted that earlier. I still cannot believe what I heard. WTF! The man is completely insane.

      • Cuberly

I’m trying to decipher how he spins mass casualties into a ratings boast.

        • Pathological psychosis-level narcissism. He sees nothing at all except as a reflection of himself.

          • Karl Dubhe

Actually, he’s just repeating the stock phrases that give him comfort, and that have worked in the past to con people. This is more of a senile/dementia issue than a psychotic break.

Although, I could be wrong. Or we could both be right.

          • Personally, I think it’s both at this point.

The narcissism and ignorance were always there, as our friend & frequent commenter Ross can confirm (worked for him back in the 80s).

But the verbal skills degradation is significant and accelerating.

Video from 1999. Similar speech patterns and word choices, plus he’s still an ignorant bigot, but here he can speak in complete sentences, using complex clause structures, and is able to stay on a single topic for a full paragraph of thought:

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l_joQ1kxxZs

The other thing I noticed is he appears still capable then of talking about subjects other than himself.

          • Cuberly

And so many don’t think that’s super-duper off the charts creepy.

        • CharlestonDave

The dying folks didn’t vote for him?

    • Natty Enquirer

      What a way with words.

    • Karl Dubhe

He is not rational. He makes the king who spoke to plants look reasonable.

      25 45

      Do it now. Please.

    • IAMBOWLINGGREEN

      Thats senility right there.

      • geoffalnutt

Can senility be malicious? It certainly is.

        • He’s never not been malicious.

  • Lazycrockett

Wonder if he cancelled that check he wrote yesterday?

    • Treant

What check? He never wrote a check.

  • boobert

If you want the dotard gone, cut his press coverage and cover his staff. He’ll crack in a few days!

  • Benny S.

Let me guess. Since he’s no longer a part of the administration, he’ll be keeping the money he said he’d reimburse.

    • AmeriCanadian

Did you think his “check” was real in the first place?

    • He’s a multi-millionaire many times over. $50k was nothing to him.

But of course he’s keeping it.

      • bambinoitaliano

Every penny is something for these millionaires and billionaires. It’s the reason why they are so hell bend on getting the tax cut. The more one has the more they want.

        • AmeriCanadian

True and there’s never enough to satisfy them. Never.

  • bambinoitaliano

O/T Just watched reboot Will & Grace, I think some of us should ask for loyalty to be paid by the writers. It’s like they read JMG comments and regurgitated on the first episode. No disrespect for the four actors, they look tired and making their last run to pay for their retirement homes.

    • Lazycrockett

my biggest issue with the reboot is after 2 decades none of the characters have changed. Thought the writers would have found more interesting things to write bout than the same stuff from the 90’s.

    • Lizard

Snark, sarcasm, and images of gorgeous half-naked men?

I might have to start watching Will & Grace

    • Treant

It is NOT getting good reviews. There’s no entry on Rotten Tomatoes, but I’m idly curious as to whether there’s a discrepancy between profession and people who watched.

    • Hank

I am willing to wait, until it finds its “groove”… or not.

EDIT 2: Never mind. Wife and kids. Drat.

  • In a way, Price’s hypocrisy on living high on the hog once he had the opportunity for virtually unlimited spending with no oversight—when contrasted with his many years of railing against gov’t waste—reminds me of all those virulent homophobes who we almost always eventually learn are closeted and self-loathing.

To wit, Price wasn’t pissed because government money was being wasted. He was pissed because he wasn’t doing the wasting, basically jealousy.

Is the t-shirt for sale somewhere?

      • Chris H.

I tried a google image search by cropping out the person and just searching the shirt. Google tells me their best guess for the image is Donald Trump…hehehe. Even Google knows he is a looser.

  • Rebecca Gardner

Totally OT but I’ve fallen in love and this one looks real and honest and sane and smart and successful. It’s gotten to the point where I think by this time next year I may be moving.

So, here’s my question. Any Texans here? Will this native NYer, moving to Houston from SF be killed at the border or will they let me in? What’s life like in Texas? My only image of it is from all the crazy I hear coming out of it in the news.

    Help!

    • Congrats!

Not a Texan here, but I’ve found that if you pick the right neighborhood(s), even in those places we hear bad things about can be pretty nice.

    • David Walker

It can’t happen the other way…convince her to move to SF?

      • Rebecca Gardner

We’ve been looking into that but as a Chemical Engineer Texas is the place. Also, OH! MY! GOD! The houses we are looking at there would be at least 4 million dollars here.

        • David Walker

Maybe you could start a charter airline service catering to government and executive types.

          • Rebecca Gardner

Get Tom Price to give us endorsements!

    • netxtown

OH , honey – I’m so happy for you.. I just don’t know how to tell you this.
      Houston. Humidity. Hell.

      • Stubenville

Oh my God, the humidity makes Florida look balmy.

      • Rebecca Gardner

Yeah. The humidity is a scary thing. At least they have AC, unlike SF when we get hot days.

      • Prost Seattle

My chest hair gets all frizzy with the humidity there.

    • Lizard

Never lived in Texas and unqualified to give advice, but would like to offer my congratulations. 🙂

    • Ninja0980

      Congrats!

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I hear Austin is OK. At least stick to a college town.

    • Circ09

I’m not in Houston but I have lived in that area. I’m in Dallas now.

Truthfully, just going by your tweets and posts I’m not sure if your blood-pressure could take average Texans for very long. That includes those of us on the liberal side of the aisle. Texas is not California (I’ve lived there too) and the operational culture is just very different. Even a huge city like Houston proper is about as far removed from SF as you can get. Also, Houston is beholden to certain interests -like oil, duh -and people there don’t cotton so much to any dissent of the status quo when it comes to their bottom lines. My advice: stick to the city of Houston itself. Don’t buy a house in the Houston suburbs. That’s where you will directly run into the largest enclaves of “conservative” crazy. Avoid Sugarland like the plague. There are people on this board that do live in Houston that can relate better than I can what places are best.

If you can choose another city to live then your best bet for happiness quotient in Texas would probably be certain areas in Austin. You would fit in much better there, I would think. And the tech & start-up culture is centered in Austin rather than Houston. On the plus side for you, Texas does have a large motorcycle and gun culture pretty much everywhere 🙂

I don’t mean to scare you off. I just want you to be prepared to spend a lot of time banging your head against the wall in frustration. I personally would love to have you as a new resident. We need all the help we can get down here. And I delight in the huge influx of people moving in from California (despite what it has done to our property taxes because you all are driving up our property prices like crazy!).

      • Rebecca Gardner

Thank you so much. I was kinda expecting exactly what you said. I’m not worried about finding work because I probably will not be working, however my current law firm does have a Houston office should that be an issue. Houston is the place we will settle because, as you mentioned, oil, and the better half is a Chemical Engineer working in that industry.

I guess I’ll be able to keep my sanity with motorcycles and guns and just not let any of my neighbors know I’m voting as far left as I possibly can.

        • Circ09

As long as you keep in mind that voting “far left” in Texas means “Blue Dog Dem”. There is no such thing as voting “far left” in Texas except for the occasional Green party candidate as a protest vote. If you stick to Houston proper there should at least be some viable Democrats running on a ticket. For example, Annise Parker is a Blue Dog that worked for the oil industry and served as a fairly popular mayor. Even so, she isn’t seen by most as a viable candidate for State or Federal elected office now. In the suburbs, you are likely to get only Republican and Libertarian choices. Keep your expectations very low, is what I am saying.

Since your better half is a Chemical Engineer I guess there is little risk of you driving an electric car 🙂 My friend’s Tesla has been keyed twice since he moved from Dallas to Houston. I always have to remind myself not to sound gleeful over low Brent Crude Oil Prices when around oilfield types. They don’t really appreciate my “green” sensibilities.

        • Ken M

At least you’re trying. Most of the country is going “huh?’ and changing the channel. There’s more than one reason they save this for last. Most confusing, therefore easiest to slide through. They have 30 hours technically, then Trump can close down the government. Obama did it once too, but it’s never pretty. The president tends to get his way if it happens.

    • This…does not surprise me. Well, a little bit: I fully expected them to do this for Trumpcare.

      • If the Dems ever retake Congressional majorities, we can fully expect the hypocritical corrupt GOPers to demand there be no exceptions to CBO scores for all major legislation.

He closed: “Duty is Ours — Results are the Lord’s!”

    Just another religious fundi crook.

Is there a waitress or a caddy from Mar a Lago 45 can promote to replace Price?

I suppose you mean one with a legitimate green card.

Ha! The Bitch asked the public to pay the PRICE for his “I’ve Got Mine” plutocratic self indulgence on someone else’s dime.

Couldn’t make enough in Orthopedic Surgery, so got on the Congress Gravy Train, then this Gig, fit for a Pig.

Talk about the doctor’s HYPOCRITIC OATH. He’s toast now, but will make millions as a lobbyist, talking FoxHead or whatever.
To the manor born, these SHARKTANK ‘ Cabinet Secretaries’. #DRAIN-IT-DAMMIT!

Dirtbag President gathers a dirtbag cabinet and we are watching it all fall apart. Another one bites the dust! This fucker should be doing some major time in the slammer. Donnie was upset because of the “optics” of the situation. It was making HIM look bad – not good for ratings, you know. I’m patiently waiting for the congressional and Mueller investigations to gather all the facts and evidence and flush this fucking White House toilet. Donnie was going to drain the swamp. All he did was drag net those in that swamp and repopulate it with his own scummy brand of swamp life. I always recall how during the campaign he said that if Hillary was elected, we’d have a President who would be under federal investigation from day one. He seriously misread his crystal ball, the dipshit.

    • Ann Kah

Nobody told him he wasn’t supposed to say anything about the “optics”. He was supposed to look solemn and deplore the waste of taxpayer money blah blah blah.

  • Richard Schneider

Price did a fair amount of damage. Trump has hundreds of these expendable asshats waiting in the wings. They’ll all be rewarded somewhere down the road, if they haven’t been already.

  • TexasBoy

I’m just guessing here, but hasn’t Trump has more of his own appointees fired or resign than any other President in their first 9 months of office?

And his minions don’t seem to care because HER EMAILS!

  • BearEyes

    it’s a start.
now more secretaries need to take the focus off tRump and upstage him.

  • Halou

How many people have resigned or been fired now?

    • TexasBoy

      Higher than Trump can count.

    • andrew

      Not nearly enough.

  • Ninja0980

    Good riddance to bad rubbish.

  • ColdCountry

So where is the outrage for all the money Dump spends on travel???

  • Puck

I hope he pays it back first like he promised he would!

    • Hue-Man

IIRC he was only going to repay $51,000.

    Tony Perkins – YOU’RE WELCOME!

  • But…”all the best people”…

MSNBC has been showing a clip from (I think) 2010 in which Price rails against Pelosi taking expensive plane trips. All hail the fact-finders; we need more of them.

  • billbear1961

He owes this country ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!

  • bkmn

How does this keep happening to the best people, the brightest people?

I am sad, because my outrage with Price had reached the point that I was going to buy a sleazy bio on him that someone mentioned. I haven’t actually looked at it, but it’s appropriately titled: Out of the ooze, the story of Dr. Tom Price.

Finding an HHS replacement who meets Trump’s required qualifications might take awhile once they find out Typhoid Mary is no longer available.

  • KnownDonorDad

So glad he’s gone. Not as destructive to the department he represents as Betsy DeVos or Scott Pruitt, but generally awful.
