AUSTRALIA: Anti-Gay Pol To Robocall 1M Homes After Bitching About “Invasive” Pro-Gay Text Messages

The Guardian reports:

A robocall in which Cory Bernardi warns marriage equality will lead to “radical gay sex education” is set to target 1m homes. In several interviews on Thursday, Bernardi has confirmed the robo-call campaign slated for South Australia and Victoria, first revealed by Nine News.

He has said that Australian Conservatives will pay for the exercise but declined to confirm its reported cost of $50,000, or five cents a call. Bernardi defended the robocall on Sky News, arguing that because it asks constituents’ opinion of same-sex marriage it is “market research”, which he called the “stock-in-trade of politics”.

In a swipe at the yes campaign, Bernardi claimed the landline robo-calls were “not invasive like sending text messages to unlisted numbers or 12-year-olds telling them how to vote, I’m asking for their opinion”. Last weekend the yes campaign sent millions of text messages urging Australians to “help make history and vote yes for a fairer Australia” which resulted in 170,000 people clicking through to the voteyes.org.au website.

  • clay

Uh, can we go back to the tangerine clown, now?
No? what he does is actually serious?
    Fuck.

    • Tawreos

We’ll be back to him soon enough, he will sense that we are not paying attention to him and do something stupid or hateful to regain our attention.

  • Tawreos

I am sure it is just market research. I am also sure that their question will be along the lines of “Do you want to side with god and jesus and all of the puppies and kittens in the world or do you want to side with the evil mean homosexuals that want to rape all of your children and kill the puppies and the kittens?” Yup just plain old market research without telling anyone how to vote.

  • Steve Smith

Funny how in the mysterious world of the conservatives, treating everyone as equal and worthy of respect translates to “radical sex education”. I think it must be an illness, as nothing else can explain such levels of mean mindedness and selfish behaviour.

    • Tawreos

They are just pissed that there is an argument at all. So many years of being in charge of everything did not help to sharpen their debating skills and now they are on the back foot trying to learn (poorly) as they go.

    • Goodboy

Funny how it always comes apart when it’s put in front of the bright lights of truth ie the courts.

  • crewman

There seems to be a concerted effort to suppress any pro-gay messaging. It’s very putinesque.

  • Ninja0980

Whether it’s in the US or Australia, the same bigoted dog whistles are always used.

    • Tawreos

      Only the accent changes

      • And perhaps fewer commercials with ominous clouds.

    • Steverino

It’s the Proposition 8 playbook all over again. As the vote drew near in the final weeks of that campaign back in 2008, the pro-8 ads were all about “gay marriage being taught in the public schools” which of course tipped the vote in favor of Prop 8 with voters saying “I don’t have a problem with gay marriage, but I don’t think this should be taught in the public schools.”

      Fake news in action, again.

      • Goodboy

Yeah, that worked and it was already legal in CA and the voters could see there was no such problem. Imagine how well it can work when it’s not even on the books yet.

      • vorpal 😼

LOL we have our “friendly neighborhood” Christian over on another gay rights website, http://www.slowlyboiledfrog.com

He thinks that we devious, nefarious LGBT people will not be happy until every kindergarten student is wearing opposite sex clothing, on transition hormones, and forced to try gay sex to see if they like it.

And yet when we play even a half-baked game of slippery slope with granting Christian bakers the right to deny LGBT couples under some absurd SSM participation notion, he swears on a stack of bibles that Christians would never use that to discriminate more widely against LGBT people.

It’s not hard to see that Christian limo drivers, Christian barbers (ha), Christian caterers, Christian wedding dress resellers, etc. could all easily claim that they don’t want to participate in a same-sex wedding (or same-sex “so-called wedding” as they refer to it) and should be able to deny us service.

        • Ninja0980

Not only them but far right Jews and Muslims as well.
Contrary to what the bigots claim about us being “afraid” to sue Muslims, there have been several ACLU cases where Muslim cab drivers were sued after they threw same sex couples out of their cabs and tried to cite “religious freedom” as a justification for doing so.
They lost and rightfully so, just as the cake baker etc. should.
Because as you said, they’ll start there but won’t end there.
The fact there have been religious freedoms bills that have mentioned EMTS and police officers is proof of that.

        • olandp

This all the effort to reinstate Jim Crow, but with the added bonus of including LGBT, Muslims, Jews…

          • Ben in Oakland

It’s a different world now, though, with the internet and reviews and yelp.
they may win, but I suspect that they are going to be very unhappy that they got what they wished for.

  • JoeMyGod

Bernardi’s robocalls are the equivalent of calling 14 million US homes.

Wow. You Aussies reading here: Are you guys as fucked up as we Americans?

    Beginning to sound like it.

    • Gustav2

Of course, do you think we Americans are exceptional? 😉

    • Tulle Christensen

both settled by unwanted British, we have a lot in common with the Aussies

      • Tawreos

Our crazy haters even use the same bullshit arguments

      • Gustav2

Australia got the P.O.M.E. and we got all the middle children of the aristos.

        Australia got the better deal.

      • another_steve

If I remember my history correctly, Australia was originally settled by the British as a penal colony. Someplace to dump criminal Brits.

If they don’t get marriage equality soon, I suggest that Aussies give the continent back to its indigenous peoples and join me for brunch here in Maryland next Saturday.

        • Tulle Christensen

And we were settled by “criminal” religious folks illegally worshiping their brand of sky fairy. Both unwanted in the isles

          • jerry

I think most of our problems can still be traced back to the Puritans.

        • Silver Badger

Much of America’s early settlement came from British jails. Maryland comes to mind.

        • Hue-Man

Australia got the convicts, Canada got the French, and America got the Puritans.

    • No.

I’ve forgotten where I read this, but it was being reported yesterday that so far the Yes vote already stands at 76 or 77%.

      • another_steve

I’m glad to read that, Roger. My man and I have traveled in Australia. A wonderful, kind and giving people – the Australians.

I’d be surprised and horrified if they went “no” on marriage equality.

        • Well, the final result of the plebiscite (or whatever its nom du jour is) is still not in, though things are looking very promising.

But don’t forget that whatever the result may be it won’t bind the Parliament, and both the Coalition and Labor have allowed a free vote on ME there. On the other hand, if ME does fail in Parliament that may well hand Labor the election next year. As Turnbull and his gang only have a parliamentary majority of 1, that possibility must already be causing him some sleepless nights.

          We live in interesting times.

  • Steverino

Of course, it’s older, more conservative voters who tend to still have land lines and answer phone calls.

    • Lizard

Right? My family hasn’t had a land line in years.

  • HZ81

God, I will fund 1 million robocalls telling haters to Eat It if our LGBTQ Aussie’s succeed.

    Okay, maybe I’ll contribute, but…

  • It’s like these doofuses don’t even hear the words coming out of their own mouths.

This was written today by Tony Abbott, “Left will find Aussies don’t like being told what to do.” Psst, Tony you realize you’re the one telling Aussies what to do and how to live.

marriage equality will lead to “radical gay sex education”

He’s wrong: marriage equality leads to cures for cancer, solar eclipses, people eating chicken, and having Justin Trudeau for prime minister.

Playing the Christian game of drawing idiotic conclusions is actually kinda fun!

Oh, and heaven forbid we teach young gay people how to have safe sex. The horrors!

    • olandp

Anything that leads to Justin Trudeau works for me!

    • ChrisMorley

Sadly marriage equality hasn’t led to nationwide “radical sex education” in the US, or the UK.
In the UK we are still fighting for national LGBTQ-relevant sex and relationships education.

      • Franciscan

Well, sadly, it’s premature to say that we in the U.S. have uniformly achieved marriage equality. Among other things, the Texas Supreme Court has ruled that gay marriage does not confer the same rights and privileges, such as spousal benefits. And there are recalcitrant reptiles running for office in many states.

    • JCF

      -ist.

  • Lizard

Question: what does “radical gay sex education” look like?

“You see, children, sometimes a man will find himself attracted to other men, or a woman attracted to other women. It isn’t so different than men being attracted to women. The most important thing is that both people have said it’s okay, and that they’re both old enough to say it’s okay. As long as those conditions are met, it’s our responsibility to respect their decision to be in that relationship.”

    The horror!!! /s

  • j.martindale

I hate to admit it, but same sex marriage may cause the end of civilization as we know it. After all, after America instituted same sex marriage, it destroyed its government and put an orange clown in the office of the President. (As opposed to the conclusion that Vorpal makes that it will lead to the cure for cancer, etc.)

  • Tawreos

I wish a reporter would ask him why they have to spend millions of dollars to accomplish god’s will instead of the being himself lifting a finger to do a damn thing.

because they have a seven year old’s perspective on fairness. if you believe that equity/equality/fairness is a zero sum game, you will always feel the need to compete with others for basic rights. it’s a pretty shitty way to view life.

Who picks up the phone anymore to listen to a junk phone call? Don’t they have voicemail/caller ID in Australia? I rarely listen to voicemail, just return calls from recognized numbers.
