Viral Fake News Writer Found Dead At Age 38

The Associated Press reports:

A leading purveyor of fake news in the 2016 presidential election has died outside Phoenix at the age of 38. Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Mark Casey said Tuesday authorities discovered Paul Horner dead in his bed on Sept. 18.

Casey said the Maricopa County medical examiner performed an autopsy which showed there were no signs of foul play. He said Horner had a history of prescription drug abuse and that “evidence at the scene suggested this could be an accidental overdose.”

Horner was known for writing false stories and disseminating internet hoaxes that often went viral on Facebook and hoodwinked thousands of people. They included a story falsely claiming President Barack Obama was gay and a radical Muslim, and another saying protesters were being paid thousands of dollars to demonstrate at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies.

Last year Horner spoke to the Washington Post:

“Honestly, people are definitely dumber. They just keep passing stuff around. Nobody fact-checks anything anymore — I mean, that’s how Trump got elected. He just said whatever he wanted, and people believed everything, and when the things he said turned out not to be true, people didn’t care because they’d already accepted it. It’s real scary. I’ve never seen anything like it.

“My sites were picked up by Trump supporters all the time. I think Trump is in the White House because of me. His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything. His campaign manager posted my story about a protester getting paid $3,500 as fact. Like, I made that up. I posted a fake ad on Craigslist.”

Well a very succinct quote that sums up the American public today, “people are definitely dumber.” That is why I think the Russians “hacking the election” is a misnomer. They put out made up news, but the problem lies with the American public who just believed it. Unless someone shows me proof that the voting booths were hacked by Moscow (rather than the local Republican controlled Bd of Elections), I assume the voting was legit but the voters too wilfully stupid to know what they were doing.

    • JD

The electorate needs to be educated around some fundamentals. A decision made on review of relevant evidence that is authentic and balanced as to pros and cons, has a good chance of being on target and effective i relation to the purpose of the decision. A decision made on opinion, speculation (all new is speculation, it seems) anger or fear has no real chance of being on target, etc. Instead of railing about x or y, ask for the evidence on which the decision was made. They crumble.

Most people only skim the headlines or the first paragraph, (we are all sometimes guilty of the that) 2 or 3 paragraphs down when he gets really crazy or satirical just doesn’t matter, he is trying to justify his behavior.

    • CanuckDon

He closely resembled Bannon….big time human society-hater with a need to burn it all down. It’s interesting to compare that to those of us…myself included….that despise the “masses” and the blandness that arises from groupthink .But rather than trying to sabotage and create chaos and misery, our approach to that is usually the opposite. Choosing to honour our individuality and finding solace in others who do the same.

      • blackstar

thought the same thing ..reminded me of Bannon.

    • greenmanTN

His excuses are bullshit. He says he put links in his stories to correct information, but most people, especially low-information voters, assume links are like footnotes, CONFIRM the statements in the article and rarely check them.

This motherfucker deliberately fed lies to the masses and we will be decades undoing what this asshole did. I don’t care what his intent was, the end result is near destruction of this country. Fuck him.

I am in a crabby mood today. I can hear the Rolling Stones rehearsing in the stadium up on the hill behind me. It’s bringing out all my old fart qualities.

Talk about old farts. How can you tell the difference between a rehearsal and a performance?

        • TuuxKabin

The Rolling Stones are playing Barcelona? Anything to do with the vote? I got to see them at Altamont, the debacle of rock n’ roll. Damn. Lucky to get out of that mess with my teeth still in my head. Wasn’t ALL their fault and I still can conjure up dance floor memories when I hear Street Fighting Man, Miss You. Jumpin’ Jack Flash . . . thanks. I’m going to youtube, have breakfast and start working. Hope the concert’s soon so you don’t have to ol’ fart around much longer. Luego. I’ll gladly do that in your stead.

          • barrixines

“Lucky to get out of that mess with my teeth still in my head”

The audience will be lucky tonight if the Stones all remember to put their teeth in.

You were at Altamont! Am impressed.

The concert’s tonight – just another leg of the Ronnie Needs A New Hip world tour.

I actually like the Stones – and Mick was incredibly gorgeous back in the day.

          • TuuxKabin

Yes he was, and that’s how I remember him. Him and his ‘snake hips’ as you described your own one time. I’ve used that, ‘snake hips,’ and was asked, “where’d you learn that?” A right on description shouldn’t be such a surprise, but there you are.

I’m glad Hillary smothered him with a pillow, just like she ridded the world of that meddlesome Scalia.

  • Jeffrey

No that I think he was killed. Probably just so full of his own poison that it eventually killed him. But if anybody killed him it makes a lot more sense that it would be Vlad or Trump’s team. Hillary and Obama are already done. Trump is the only one under investigation.

  • SilasMarner

“His followers don’t fact-check anything — they’ll post everything, believe anything.” I’ve had to call out several family members because they swallowed shit like this. So stupid.

My father refers to anyone with a college degree as “over-educated idiots”. Yet he thinks he knows more about any subject than anyone else. People like him love Trump.

          • Librarykid

Does he go to doctors and dentists or does he not need a dentist?

          • jmax

Amazingly enough, he’s 88 and still has all his teeth except for one small partial plate to replace a molar. He does take good care of himself.
He goes to the doctor and gets regular check ups, but is constantly saying the doctors don’t know what they’re doing. I gave up on trying to talk sense to him years ago because, like I said, he knows more than anybody.

          • David in Tucson

That would have described my dad. And yet, he was proud that I had graduated from college.
