Tony Perkins: Most STDs Are “Incurable”

Hater Tony Perkins weighs in on yesterday’s CDC report:

The outbreak of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis reached an astounding two million cases last year, “the highest number ever,” according to the Centers for Disease Control.  Unfortunately, this is just another by-product of sexual liberalism that’s coming home to roost in a nation that’s spent the last eight years — not just encouraging, but funding — messages of irresponsibility.

Instead of encouraging morality, Barack Obama used every second of his two terms to promote immorality. And for our libertarian friends the economic burden is nothing to sneeze at. Taxpayers sink almost $20 billion a year into treatments for these infections — most of them incurable, and all of them expensive. Now, sadly, it’s become part of the push for universal health care. The philosophy is simple: live however you want, and everyone else pays the price.

Bolding is motherfucking mine. And while the new CDC report doesn’t address new HIV infections, below is the graphic attached to Perkins’ press release.

  • JoeMyGod

CDC: “The majority of these new diagnoses (1.6 million) were cases of chlamydia.”

    • clay

Curable with the exact same antibiotic widely prescribed for acne. (Primary reason chlamydia’s at lower infection rates among not-poor white girls.)

      • Gustav2

but…but…but if we give our children the vaccination we are telling them to have orgees!!!!!!

  • BearEyes

apparently, the STD of religion is also incurable.
Education is a great preventive, but we need a final cure.

    • NZArtist

Dont go near religious people unless they’re wearing a condom over their head.

      • Mikey

preferably with duct tape around the neck.

        • greenmanTN

Me to an annoying little girl (I was freshman in HS) visiting our house: “You should get home (across the street) but it’s raining. We should put a plastic bag over your head and a rubber band around your neck so your hair doesn’t get wet.”

My mother, from another room: “I heard that!”

Me: “I wasn’t really going to DO it!”

          • BJORN RAGNVALDR

We would have been inseparable in HS….

          • greenmanTN

Very possibly. I was quite sarcastic, which somehow kept me out of fist fights.

I was on an intramural soccer team (Nothing fancy or competent, believe me. It was the German club running around sucking at soccer.)

Jock to me: “If I got you on that field I’d eat your lunch!”

Me: “Well since you’re in the neighborhood and hungry, how about you eat my dick?”

Eventually even the dumbest learn to leave a porcupine alone.

            https://youtu.be/yu3mNKpJLgc

        • Galvestonian

… a good sized rubber band will work, too.

      • Judas Peckerwood

A dry cleaning bag will do in a pinch.

        • Ginger Snap

I bet e en a walmart bag will do and the christers love walmart so plenty if bags abound.

          • Shy Guy

Store plastic bags normally have breathing holes punched into them for child safety, at least they do in Europe.

          • Ginger Snap

Not here they have “this bag is not a toy keep away from children” printed on it.

          • Shy Guy

We have that too, but they put the holes in them anyway just in case, and for younger kids who can’t / don’t read.

Actually, I am a success story. I was a “practicing catholic until I was in my mid 40’s. I’d have never stuck with it for that long if not for the option & convenience of attending a mass for the LGBT community at a nearby retreat house run by Franciscan nuns.

      • BearEyes

watching the monsignor walking up and down the main aisle in the church counting the day’s “take” pretty much made the difference for me.
        Outta here!

        • TampaDink

I was insulated for most of my adult life, in that the priests who volunteered to serve our community were all doing so because of having compassion. Many of them were/are (somewhat) secretly gay themselves. When I first began attending in the early 90’s a typical Sunday would have about 75-80 in attendance by the time I’d had enough the crowds had dwindled to less than 30 each week.

    • Judas Peckerwood

From what I know about STDs, they’re far more common in the bible belt. Coincidence? I think not.

      • DonnaLee

It’s pretty high in NY, but I think much of that is due to going to clinics to be treated. I wouldn’t fuck anyone from the deep south without a condom.

      • bkmn

Gee all those states aren’t big on sex ed in public schools, could there be a correlation?

        • David Walker

No. They believe in abstinence. This is clearly a fake graphic from the librul media trying to make the bible belt look bad. And all those studies about these states being heavy into porn? Just fake news. Nobody in the south has sex outside the sanctity of marriage. Just ask Kim Davis.

          • Vint

In all fairness, Kim had sex within the sanctity of several marriages…. some of them hers.

    • Frostbite

    • Robincho

But what a pity, really, that so many have been afflicted by a disease that has so often been shown to be PRE-FUCKING-VENTABLE…

    • JoeNCA

Chlamydia. I always thought that was a lost play by Socrates.

  • Ken M

He never explains why The Family Research Council is so interested in this. Please don’t tell me that he actually believes that Trump is instilling morality. The 3 wife president. If that’s the best FRC can do, they are definitely losing the power over an American base. The goal here is simple, he’s trying to bring Homosexual men back into the spotlight before the SCOTUS trial.

    • JWC

Oh course Donny is the “Man “ old white rich bigoted

    • j.martindale

Third wife a porn star, to boot.

I have much more sympathy for people who suffer from diseases they acquire in search of love (or even for pleasure, for that matter) than I do for people who make others suffer because of their bigotry, superstition and intolerance.

  • clay

So, he’s calling for a repeal of Obama-Care in order to punish people for sexual immorality?

    • JWC

It’s a sham when they still refer to the ACA as Obamacare

      • clay

We already knew it was a sham as if STD’s began only 8 years ago.

  • JackFknTwist

Perkins is just one of those self righteous c unts who take delight in any misfortune of others. He is salivating over this STD news.
He is the exact opposite of what a Christian is supposed to be.
He is one of those stinking hypocrite Catholics who preach everyone else’s faults while they sectetly indulge their perversions in the dark.
Your day is coming you POS.

    • j.martindale

No, he is a stinking hypocrite Baptist.

      • JackFknTwist

        That’s even worse.

  • Cuberly

Obummer and Libertarianz give you STDz!!!1!1!!1!1

I LOVE when they go after libertarians. Toni & crew constantly refer to themselves, talibanjelicals, as true “conservatives” and they loathe the idea of sharing power with non-religious “conservative” libertarians.

    • clay

I’m not so sure he’s going after Libertarians, here, as trying to recruit them to his side with that financial argument.

  • Ninja0980

Then maybe folks like you should stop fighting sex education which would teach our youth about these things then Tony?

    • JAKvirginia

I would like to upvote this one trillion times!!

    • JoeNCA

Or any education. If most are “incurable”, why are we spending so much money when there’s nothing you can do about it?

  • Long Tom

    What an ignorant fuck.

  • Ken M

A few CDC numbers regarding HS sexual activity. Actually sort of scary. The kids today make my youth look innocent.
    41% have had intercourse
31% in the last 90 days
    43% did not use condoms
14% used no form of contraception
    21% were drunk or drugged
ONLY 10% have ever been tested for HIV
    Numbers for 2016

    • JWC

I think a lot of it is misinformation We grew up with the heavy club of AIDS over our heads Before that we were just as free. Probably the biggest age group with STD’s are seniors . they never used condoms in their youth and they don’t now.Kids today know that STD are not all what they used to be,a gross misconception, combined with the invincibility of youth. They proceed without caution

    • ultragreen

Teen-age pregnancies are at an all-time low, I believe. As for the teen-age kids of the past, they were far from innocent.

      • marshlc

Yeah, I hit my teen years in the 70s, post-pill, pre-AIDS, and honestly those numbers look about right to me. Except condom use is higher than I remember it.

  • Hank

Granted there is a rise in STDs in the US, especially with primary and Secondary Syphilis. However, like GC and Chlamydia, they are CURABLE with antibiotics. MOST of the cases happen to be in the Heterosexual community!!!
HIV may not be curable, but ii is livable, nowadays. More MEN should be on PREP, however.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

STD’s can be cured or managed, RTD’s like the dreaded religitardation, the chosen mental illness, not so much.

  • Statistics Palin

The one STD that will never be cured is STUPIDITY. Friends don’t let friends fuck fundies.

  • Chanel5
  • Halou

If he thinks this was just something that occurred in the last 8 years he needs to wake the fuck up already.

Wasn’t this exactly what was said way way way back in the 80s when AIDS became epidemic? Funding research is a waste of money because it encourages “immoral” behaviour. Educating people about the risks is “indoctrination”. Looking after the sick and injured is “rewarding” them for their sinful ways so we should let them all die horrible painful deaths.
Tony Perkins is ignoring the fact that his attitude has killed tens of thousands of people, and that if the church had just been as loving and as charitable as it claims to be then cures would have been found years ago to many of these “incurable” infections.

  • andrew

Perkins seems to be ignoring the facts that the highest rates of STDs are in many of the Bible Belt or just plain old conservative States. The Top 10 highest rates of STDs are: #1 Alaska, #2 Louisiana, #3 North Carolina, #4 Mississippi, #5 New Mexico, #6 South Carolina, #7 Georgia, #8 Oklahoma, #9 Arkansas, #10 Alabama. What’s up with these bible toting Christians and V.D.?

    • Halou

Perkins spent much of his “career” in Louisiana. So, y’know. It is what it is.

      • LeeCMH

Where his house was in a large flood last spring. Of course, that disaster was not God’s punishment.

    • JAKvirginia

Hmmm… and maybe these states have the highest per capita rate of farm animals? Concidence?!

    • marshlc

What’s up is pretty clear – abstinence-only sex ed.

    • Todd20036

You could have stopped after 7 words

    • Kissmagrits

I’ve noticed that obesity, heart disease, diabetes and other chronic diseases of the twentieth century run a close parallel to the high incidence of STDs in
these same states…..no accident in a culture that leaves a trail of Frito crumbs going to the john so they don’t end up in the yard.

    • Uncle Mark

I’m reminded of the statistics I read a few years back that indicated that these abstinence only programs on average delayed the first sexual experience by 9 months. The difference is that when the abstinence-only kids have sex, it will be without birth control/protection. Is it any wonder why the Bible-humping states have higher rates of pregnancy and STDs?

What’s even more despicable is that Perkins thinks he’s scaring people away from sex with his “most STDs are incurable” BS. What he’s actually doing is further shaming those infected, and scaring them away from looking for help, education & necessary treatment. He’s fucking evil !!

  • Lars Littlefield

Universal health care? Tony is purposefully unaware that in the USA STDs/STIs once diagnosed are mostly cared for by Public Health Clinics by cities and counties all over the country. If you go for a test here in San Juan county and the results are positive, your primary care doc dispatches you immediately to the county health clinic where your diagnosis is recorded (by law) and some nice PA shoots you in the butt with antibiotics or prescribes antivirals and sends you on your way until a followup appointment 10-14 days later. It’s been that way since at least WWII when the federal gov. became real interested in trying to stamp out the diseases.

  • Halou

Isn’t it amazing that the states with the highest STI rates are the ones that rank high on the religiosity index. And the states with lower STI are more liberal and progressive.

    http://backgroundchecks.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/02/map2.png

          so far.

          • Lars Littlefield

Tony, you are absolutely right, but for entirely the wrong reasons. And your solution is a large part of the problem– give authority to religious zealots who might possibly have a hidden authoritarian streak as their true agenda– or at least the one they are willing to admit to.

  • justme

Geez Toni.. One of the worst STD’s came from Christian conquerors traveling the world and having sex with every non human that they encountered…
Just ask the llamas about the Spanish Christians in Central and South America

  • kaydenpat

    Personal experience?

  • Tomcat

Christianity is a incurable mental illness also.

  • Richard Rush

Tony, If you had lived prior to the advent of modern medical science, I assume you would have wanted to dissuade everyone from engaging in heterosexual sex, because it was deadly. And, if you had been “successful,” the human species would not exist today.

Or, maybe cars and trucks should be banned because accidents kill about 35,000 people in the US each year, and cause serious injuries to many thousands of other people.

If you really wanted to make an impact on a major health issue, you should be campaigning to reverse the obesity epidemic in the US that has been spiraling out of control for years causing a number of serious chronic health consequences, and increasing health insurance costs for everyone.

And, if you are so concerned about STDs among gay people, you should be campaigning to encourage safer sex precautions, and more same-sex marriage.

    • Hue-Man

I remember checking out a cemetery where many of my relatives from the 19th century were buried. It was shocking to see the number of headstones of young wives (presumably died in childbirth) and infant children. Hetero sex was seriously dangerous (but not to the men).

  • ultragreen

For the most part, the Deep South and Alaska have the highest rates of sexually transmitted disease. These places are not exactly epicenters of liberalism.

  • greenmanTN

Just my take: The religious right LONGS for the “good old days” in which people (particularly women) were shamed for premarital sex and ostracized, sex was shameful, and everyone was taught that unwanted pregnancies and diseases were just (as in Justice) punishments for “sinners.” Else why would they oppose contraception if they are against abortion? They WANT sex to come with negative consequences because, as in the past, if you can control sex and its expression you control everything.

Look up the Magdelene Laundries in Ireland if you want to know what results from religious control of sexuality (heterosexual) or the abuses against gays.

  • Matt

It makes my head explode for him to say Obama promotes immorality. Obama who’s been married only once and for 25 years. Those like Perkins fawn all over a man who has 5 children from 3 different wives, and the current one was a soft porn model. A man who has made cameo appearances in Playboy videos and brags about how random women would let him grab their private parts.

    • safari

Perkins is a combination of Immorality and Hypocrisy!!!

  • greenmanTN

OT! But I have posted here before about the feral cat that keeps dumping litters of kittens on me. I tried to catch her to be spayed and ended up with scars for my troubles, so in slightly over a year she has given birth to 3 litters, 13 kittens. (1st litter 4, 2nd litter 4, 3rd litter 5). That’s ONE cat!

But with the help of a neighbor she was finally caught and spayed yesterday. I paid for the first 8 kittens to be neutered/spayed and the neighbor had Mama (who she also feeds) spayed. The latest litter is too young to have it done but that will probably follow.

Really bad video (zoomed in too much) but 3 of the new kittens playing today.

    https://youtu.be/Po8WRCjIzLo

    • SoCalGal20

That’s a great video. So cute! (But yeah, if you don’t want to be overrun with cats, spaying and neutering is the only way)

      • greenmanTN

The first 4 kittens I had “fixed” at the regular vet. They were tested for various illnesses, spayed/neutered, given their shots, etc, for $250 – $280 each.

The second batch I had spayed/neutered at a local cat charity and it was $170 for all four, plus a little extra for the rabies shot.

In Houston I had my cat fixed and a rabies shot by a local charity, Fund for Animals (now defunct), for less than $30 when every penny counted. (I had just left an LTR and things were in flux.) I couldn’t give them money so I volunteered for them, calling people to remind them they had an appointment, filling syringes to set levels for upcoming procedures, etc. I kind of freaked out when one of the dogs attacked a vet (the dog was not sedated enough) and I had to drive him to the local Doc In The Box to get stitched up. (I thought I could handle watching someone get stitched but NOPE, almost passed out.) I never volunteered at the clinic again but I did things like work the beer tent at local festivals.

Thanks for doing that. I used to work for a vet back in the 80s who charged $10 for a neuter and $20 for a spay. Much lower than the surrounding vets, and they were always trying to get him to raise his prices. He didn’t do it for the work as he had all he could handle. He said he had enough money(!) and would rather see the animals neutered. I remember one day a young couple brought in a farm cat from next door that had scratched himself raw from ear mites. He cleaned the ears and the wound, gave the cat a shot, and sent them home with ear mite medicine. Total charge? $2.50, his cost for the bottle of mite medicine. They protested, and he told them he couldn’t charge them because it wasn’t their cat, and shooed them out the door I asked him why, and he said they didn’t have two nickles to rub together, but they always took care of their own animals. Said he couldn’t charge them for taking care of someone elses. He was a good man.

          • greenmanTN

Wonderful. A cat attached itself to my house and in a little over a year gave birth to 13 kittens. I know that .veterinarians have to pay off their school loans just like everybody else but spay/neuter should be very cheap because it’s about population control, not pampering. I was not happy that it cost over $1000 for me to get the 4 kittens from the first litter fixed. It was just the vet I used regularly so I didn’t thinkK. It wasn’t about pampering them, being pets, it was about stopping out of control reproduction.

Not sure I want to see even a censored amputation.

OT, but someone posted an old, cute, short video of a cat playing with a ball of yarn. A friend of mine had a cat who got into her knitting when she was at work, played with the yarn until its leg was wrapped tightly and had to have its leg amputated because the blood flow was cut off for too long. A cautionary tale.

I get biographies mixed up sometimes. You live in Norway or Finland? I’ve been to Oslo once many years ago and truthfully the main thing I remember is the park with the wrought iron sculptures/fences of nude figures, getting buzzed on beer on a sunny patio, running to the top of a reinforced concrete sculpture, then tearing the knees out of a favorite pair of pants when I tried to get down. And aquavit.

          • zhera

The censored version is really innocent. 🙂 Anyway, plenty of videos on that channel, lots of different cases.

I’m in Bergen, Norway. Far superior to Oslo. 😉

On the trip in question my ex and I started in Paris, rented a Peugeot with an engine about the size of a sewing machine, then drove through Belgium, Holland, Germany (only stopping to pee because he was Jewish and hated Germany), a ferry to Denmark, then a ferry to Sweden then Norway. Then did the entire trip backward to catch the flight from Paris back to the US.

I hate trips like that actually, where you never stop long enough to even get a bare sense of the place or people. “If this is Tuesday, it must be Belgium.” There were other trips as well but all I retain are anecdotal memories that aren’t part of a narrative.

Example: a cafe in Amsterdam for lunch where the two waitresses were discussing loudly how awful Americans are, in English, obviously for our benefit. After the we’d eaten I took the check to the counter and said, “We might be obnoxious but we CAN count. You only charged us for one prix fixe lunch but we had two.” Then I paid the bill and left.

Did that happen before or after I was attacked by a swan in Denmark? Fuck if I know!

Bonus! You diverted the thread from pussies we hate to pussies we love. 💓

You don’t remember much after aquavit, go figure. Oh, and you didn’t’t tear your jeans with a sculpture, just sayin’

          • greenmanTN

Sadly, it really was a sculpture accident, no more fun than that. We’d just left the biergarten and there were some rather seedy looking late teens (I was in my late 20s) trying to climb this reinforced concrete thing without success. So in my beer soaked brain I thought, “Hell, I could do that!” So I did. (The secret was to jump from side to side but always upward. You had to be there.)

But then I was on top wondering how the fuck I was going to get down. So I slid down one of the smooth “legs” of the thing, slammed to my knees, tore my pants, and cut my knees. I’m sure everyone who saw me later, looking at my bloody knees, was thinking “Well, he sure showed those teenagers how it’s done!”

But it’s a beautiful sculpture park, regardless of the American dipshits who decide to show off after 3 giant beers.

Our house is on the ‘Knocked up cat with no place to go’ map. A few months back we managed to get a Mama cat fixed after her second litter of kittens (eight total). The kittens were all spayed or neutered, many of them have become inside cats here.

      • greenmanTN

        Wonderful!

It sneaks up on you, or it did on me. There is a built in planter under my bedroom window, set about 12 inches from the outdoor wall. I heard meowing out there and discovered a semi-feral Mama was keeping her kittens there. I adopted Puck from that litter, brought him inside early on, and he is the most tame and friendly.

I got all 4 spayed or neutered.

The 2nd litter, to me, came out of nowhere. Suddenly Mama is a double wide, and one option is to have her fixed and the kittens aborted. I have no problem with that except this was final days, the kittens were already viable and I did not want to do that. These kittens were born inside and were hand raised so are very affectionate and used to people.

I got all 4 spayed or neutered

Before the 2nd litter was even weaned that little hussy Mama was knocked up again. 5 more. She hid so I wasn’t really aware of this, but that’s 13 cats from ONE fertile female. One.

I just glad Mama isn’t going to be able to reproduce more.

        • Now if you could just catch the Tom whose dick is half responsible for this hairy mess!

            That’ll work!

My brother shared an apartment with a very funny but odd woman. Her pet cat went into heat and was yowling so loud you could barely hear. So she wrapped the eraser end of a pencil with plastic wrap and fucked the cat until it shut up.

Please note that neither my brother or I participated in this event.

Randy little bastard. Cats can have more than one father in the same litter apparently, so their markings are very different.

The tubby long haired one is my current favorite though he’s very pushy. Don’t want to pet me? How about I sit on your face.? I bet petting me looks pretty good right about now, huh?

      • greenmanTN

3 of the first litter come inside, Puck, my special project, a post-weaning kidnapee, is a major snuggler. The second litter was born inside and were hand-raised, so very tame. The third litter was so soon after the second, and born outside, so they are impossible to catch. Very pretty though.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/dr-gridlock/wp/2017/09/27/a-southwest-passenger-complained-about-dogs-on-her-flight-police-forced-her-off-the-plane/?utm_term=.d2ad71a1c44e

This poses an interesting conundrum-what is an airline to do? A passenger claims a life-threatening allergy to dogs. Another passenger has a service dog. This article points out that the airline can ask to see a medical certificate to verify a life-threatening allergy. However, per ADA, I don’t believe an airline (or any business) can ask to see a service animal license. They can ask if the animal is a service animal but the individual does not have to show a license.

So following that the passenger with the allergy is the individual without a certificate is removed. This doesn’t sit right with me-that one person’s medical needs take precedence over another’s based upon an unequal requirement of documentation and this seems to fly in the face of HIPPA. It appears the airline followed proper procedure.

Btw, there are people claim their pets as service animals just for the perks, I really don’t like this. And there are people who dishonestly exaggerate the severity of allergies. That is not to say that the majority of folks with service animals are based on illegitimate needs (and they are often needs invisible to the rest of us), or that there are not people with legitimate life-threatening allergies (also invisible to the rest of us).

So what’s the right thing for an airline to do here?

    • safari

Assuming the dog has a seat it is easier to simply reschedule the individual who is allergic.

      • Refugay

The article says there were two dogs-one service dog and one passenger pet.

        • safari

So it’d lean even heavier toward rescheduling the allergic passenger. Though she should get a free flight and some compensation since it wasn’t her fault.

          • Silver Badger

Providing her allergy wasn’t a lie.

          • safari

            I honestly don’t care.

          • safari

(If the person is allergic then a lawsuit would cost much more than a rescheduling and compensation; if it is a lie then it’s a loss for a large corp that I really can’t cry for.)

          • Silver Badger

The allergy story just doesn’t ring true. Someone is trying to milk the system. This is just plain wrong. Having said that, I do not and will not fly. I don’t particularly like corporations, but I hate liars.

          • safari

I don’t mind flying. I’d prefer to drive if I had the time, but my favorite transport experience was leaving Lansing at 6, getting to DC by 10, checked in and to Fairfax by just after 11, and back to DC for a conference by 2… all without a car.

          • Silver Badger

I get sick in recirculated air environments. Flying just isn’t worth it.

          • safari

It’s only 50% recirculated per puff.

          • Silver Badger

With new and improved germs. For me, flying is not worth several days in bed.

          • Tomcat

They are NOT required to provide a allergy free flight.
If she needs one of those take a charter flight.

          • Refugay

I think you’re right. I think it might be appropriate to request that folks with life-threatening allergies to common things on flights disclose prior to a flight to allow the airline to make proper accommodations.

    • worstcultever

Ban all humans from planes. Animals only.

      • Refugay

There you go! I like that-flights these days are full of animals anyway!

    • Hank

Bump the allergic passenger up to first class and the service dog to the very rear!

      • Refugay

I’d put the person with the allergy on the next flight w/out an animal and fly her 1st class.

        • Silver Badger

Strap her on under one of the wings.

        • Tomcat

1st class is probably what that person was trying to get free anyway. or possibly a free ride period.

      • safari

It’s a closed air circulation system. I don’t think it works that way.

      • Tomcat

Show the lying passenger the exits and give them a choice stay or go.

        • Tomcat

You will find two exits at the front, two exits over the wings and two exits at the rear, take your choice.

        • Hue-Man

          Parachute optional.

    • bkmn

The airline can not guarantee that the previous passenger in the seat of the allergic person did not have a dog with them, so they really can’t be absolutely sure in the case of the person with the allergy. If the allergy is that severe they should be flying with an epipen and mask. As for the service animal most organizations that provide them do provide some kind of documentation that the animal has been trained and turned over to their new owner.

      • zhera

I had no idea that one could have a life-threatening allergy to dogs!

In such a case you are absolutely right: The air in the plane would be hazardous even without any dogs there. People’s clothing, previous flights with dogs, etc.

A person with such an allergy must be quite used to not being able to go places or do things. A mask would be mandatory.

      • Refugay

That’s an excellent point-that there may have been a dog on a previous flight. They don’t de-dog.

    • Silver Badger

Dump the allergy victim. He can’t prove he has an allergy. He could well be a christian liar just trying to make trouble. Trouble makers are a dime a dozen. A good dog is A GOOD DOG. Worth his weight in rubies.

    • Tomcat

Life threatening allergy to dogs,,, bullshit.

    • MikeBx2

I’ve worked many years in the airline industry. If a person is that highly allergic, they shouldn’t be flying commercially. An airline could never guarantee a pet hair free environment any more than they can guarantee a peanut free environment.

      • safari

From your knowledge has anyone actually had an allergy problem on a plane?

        • MikeBx2

In 22 years, I’ve never experienced a passenger having a reaction to something on a plane.

          • Tomcat

The world is getting very screwed up these days.

    • Natty Enquirer

All you can ask is 1) Is this animal required because of a disability? and 2) What task does the animal perform? You cannot ask what the disability is or demand to see any documentation. It is a setup for abuse.

In this case, I side against the complaining woman because she was looking for a fight and refused to cooperate in any way. People just don’t get it; you are on private property and even if you have a contractual complaint, you have to go when the owner tells you to go.

      • Tomcat

My daughter delivers her puppies to their new homes all the time on airlines. The puppies can fly in a small cage under the seat. This is a common practice for breeders that refuse to allow their puppies to be put into the belly of the plane where many die of lack of airline care. As far as this allergy to dogs that is life threatening I do not believe this. Sounds like a spoiled rich person to me.

    • MBear

If someone is that allergic to something so common, they should stay home

EtA: we have 3 dogs and i have no problem leaving the house with dog hair on me and/or saying “hi” to every dog i meet. Someone sitting next to me would have a problem

Tony Perkins – message is to sow fear about all sex except religiously sanctioned sex and unsanctioned sex is to be suppressed, marginalized, or punished.
He will tell you unsanctioned sex is bad public policy, and will bring about horrible incurable disease and shortened life spans.
How many sexually secure men do you know that focused their life’s mission on controlling other people’s sex lives and demonizing those his religion doesn’t approve of.
The terrifying thing is Tony Perkins has access to and whispers into Trump’s ears.
Tony delivered the born again Christian vote in 2016 and Trump owes him payback.
Where do you think the idea of the military’s transsexual ban came from?

    • worstcultever

Well, IMO think the trans ban came from Stephen Miller, just throwing fascist cruel shit at his dartboard of “easy” low-hanging fruit.

But anyway, yeah, now that these crazed religio-sex freaks think they bestride the world, they’re really letting their psycho obsessions off the leash.

Also, fuck this guy’s closet case hair. It is unendurable.

  • Lazycrockett

    FYI

An all new episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee is on tonight.

  • Ninja0980

Thank goodness I had parents who taught my siblings and I about safe sex
They DID admit that it would be really, really, REALLY nice if we waited until marriage but just in case we didn’t, they made sure we had the knowledge to be safe and also that we should never be allowed to be pressured into stuff we don’t want to do by anyone, even if they claim to “love” us.
My siblings and I are STD free and in good relationships because we listened to their advice.
If Tony and others would butt the hell out of sex ed and admit most folks aren’t going to wait until marriage, our story wouldn’t be as rare.

    • Bernie Keefe

Relax Dude, it’s Ok. Your parents did a good job.

  • Bernie Keefe

I pray that the mighty wrath of that glorious tome (King James, leather bound, heavy veluum), bear down on the back of his duplicitous and prevaricating head! All the while he prays to the flag on the pole to come down from said pole and save him.

Yes, more and more is being learned everyday about how Russia is doing this all over the globe to create discontent in countries so they will have infighting all while they are taking territory. It is now known they were behind Brexit, and the different countries that are voting this month to break from their countries. Rachel did 20 minutes about it tonight so if you missed it and can watch Rachel on another medium do watch her.

      AND are Heterosexual!!!

  • One of the single most effective ways to prevent both STDs and unplanned pregnancies is through the use of condoms.

Guess what else Perkins is against?

    • Tomcat

But sex is only for creating new life.
Or in the case of religious zealots, new lifeforms.

      • No, no, no.

Sex is for forcing pregnancy upon women, whether we want it or not. They don’t give a damn about our health or that of the resulting children, as evidenced by their adamant stand against access to healthcare and against requiring maternity and OB/GYN coverage in health insurance.

        • Ninja0980

Yup, as George Carlin once said, it’s all about controlling women, nothing more.

    • Treant

I bought a condom once, before I sold it at a profit and purchased my current single family home.

I didn’t know it could prevent STDs.

  • M Jackson

    • Silver Badger

Sure he did. Look at the graphic. To Perkins followers HIV = gay men.

      • M Jackson

But that was very coded, Toni usually uses us as the framing device for his entire pile of offal. Today it’s the libertarians he is blaming (out of some kind of confusion that liberals like me are libertarians, which I am not).

  • Tomcat

Is he trying to tell us he cannot get rid of his STDs?

  • BeaverTales

Tony talks as if his brand of “morality” keeps people safe, when it clearly doesn’t. Christians have a horrible track record of following their own advice and professed beliefs.

Condoms, vaccinations and sex ed shouldn’t be demonized by anyone, but the worst elements of society typically do. These things save lives, money and suffering when used properly.

They’re safer than the illusion of monogamy, truthfulness and the naive presumption that most people care about their community as much as they do about themselves. The opportunity costs of being in denial about reality are high.

    • -M-

      Tony’s lies cost lives.

OT: The Peppermint Patch soap is done and it came out pretty nicely, if I do say so myself. Here’s a loaf’s eye view; once this hardens a bit more (tomorrow, probably), I’ll cut it into 10 bars of square soap. It’s hard to focus on the loaf as all the pattern edges are pretty soft.

You can see some leftovers, poured into a silicone muffin pan. They make great bathroom hand-washing soaps.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/c108dfba5c1940bade923bf776c8ca6e2f5118c07c55701c3c9e9cdedda67f23.jpg

    • safari

      1) Why make soap?
      2) I want to eat it.

      • Treant

        2) I know, it kind of looks like a cherry cream. Really, it’s more of a red marble in person.

        1) It’s far superior to, and less in cost, to anything you can get in the stores. Or, as any home soapmaker calls American and European store-bought soap: crap. It’s skin stripping, has no conditioning power, tends to over-cleanse and crack your skin, has a lousy “hand feel” and generates huge amounts of bubbles at the cost of terrible durability.

1a) I know exactly what’s in that soap because I put it in the pot: lard, coconut oil, olive oil, castor oil, lye, water, red lake #30, and iron oxide. Plus peppermint oil and patchouli oil for scent. The Red #30 is a rare departure for me, but peppermint demanded a brighter red than the oxide alone can give.

1b) It’s fun to make it, cut it, age it, and then use your own soap.

1c) I can tune formulae for specific purposes. What you see above is a “winter soap,” less cleansing and more conditioning to the skin, with plenty of leftover emollients to preserve skin moisture and health. It’s fine to use it in summer, and I do, but I tend to prefer my summer soaps for that (more cleansing, a bit less conditioning). And I have a formula for gardener’s hands (which also works great to clean windows, scrub pots, and clean surfaces without residue or rinsing).

        • Lumpy Gaga
        • Cuberly

I’m quite sure we’ve had this conversation before but I started purchasing hand made soap a few years ago. There’s a few vendors that show up at the local farmers market that make some wonderful stuff, kinda pricey, but Trader Joes also has some cheaper ones that are excellent.

The difference between store bought and hand made is huge! They rinse so cleanly and wow one bar lasts so much longer than a store bought version that has a ton of air whipped into it.

          • safari

How does it compare with liquid? I’ve been using Dr. Bronners on and off but haven’t noticed much aside from clogged drains.

          • Cuberly

I stopped using liquid soap as well.

Switching to bar has another benefit, the liquid soaps I used just wouldn’t freaking rinse off. They have so much perfume and other crap.

          • Treant

I’ve found the liquids to be a poorer soap. Dr. Bronners is…well, it’s fine, there’s nothing wrong with it, and it absolutely won’t hurt you. We just don’t think that much of it. They use the American definition of “castile,” which is, “vegetable-based oils.” We use the formal definition, which is, “100% olive oil, although fragrance oils and colorant are allowed.”

And, as you noted, it’s a bit sticky and tends to bind to anything that’s in your drains.

          • safari

Any good liquid soaps or recipes?

          • Treant

Many; liquid soap is just using potassium hydroxide rather than sodium hydroxide. The binding is much weaker, so the soap is liquid and doesn’t crystallize like solid soap does.

The process is more complicated than making a bar soap and requires a lot more manipulation, but plenty of people do it!

There’s tons of information at: http://www.soapmakingforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=11

          • Treant

I know, ain’t it great? Once I made my own, I never went back.

        • Todd20036

I buy farmers market soap – essences of fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

It costs me about $5 for a single bar of soap, but skin is grateful for not using brand name cookie cutter chemical ridden soaps

          • Treant

Damn right. Cost per bar for me is about $0.85 per bar, and I tune for durability, so it even lasts forever with my husband taking 40 minute showers.

        • jerry

Actually, the large block looks like it could be bacon flavored.

          • Treant

Hum. I could do that in brown.

And they do make bacon scent.

    • Joe in PA

I bet it smells good in your house right now! 🙂

      • Treant

It does! My husband cleaned out my soaping pot for me today and mentioned it smelled great on his hands, too. It’s peppermint with a dash of patchouli to warm it up and make the scent richer.

I ran out of lard, though, and just ordered more.

        • Lazycrockett

          animal right?

          • Treant

Yep, lard from a pig. Tallow from any other animal, although when we say tallow, we usually mean beef unless otherwise specified.

There are only three main bulk oils that offer hard and durable bars of soap and offer creamy, copious lather: lard, tallow, and palm.

Palm sounds like the vegan way to go…except that orangutans eat the palm nuts. Which is where the oil comes from. So the farms shoot them. And the workers are third world, with all the plantation problems that causes.

All in all, I calculate that American-sourced lard is more ethical as it’s a waste-stream product. You don’t kill a pig for lard, this is the stuff they would otherwise throw away.

          • Lazycrockett

Raised by parents who where hillbillies, I love lard.

          • safari

What are you using for a processing device?

          • Treant

Manual. I don’t approve of using programmable chips unless it absolutely cannot be done via internal switch and basic components. It’s more fun to figure it out like they would have in 1965.

I did program one for a set of LED jar candles I gave my mother; they had to flicker convincingly and resistors, capacitors, and transistors in combination don’t do random very well. I just used an ATTiny there, they’re simple and I only needed a dual output (one to run the light, one to detect the switch status for timed turning off).

I’m like OMFG! and have stored important docs that way since.

      • Treant

It’s not that hard, although finding recipes that work for you (or creating them yourself) is very time consuming and, some say, tedious. I enjoyed it.

Handling the lye is a bit dangerous, so you will need the proper equipment–rear-venting eye protection at the absolute minimum.

        • MBear

I’ve been bookmarking Canadian sources for cold process kits. Figure thats a good start before getting into too many variables. 😉

Sorry for the extra OT: any suggestions on what to look for in a good kit?

          • Treant

CP (cold process) is definitely where to start; I do 85% that way (10% batch melt and pour just for fun, 5% hot rebatch if I make a mistake).

I didn’t start with a kit (I didn’t think to look), so I started off the bat doing my own recipes. The kit’s sure a lot easier!

I definitely wouldn’t start with anything complex, like “beeswax soap,” or things that mention jojoba or cocoa butter. Those are things to play with later once you learn the basics. Since soap is a wash-off product, I never use those anyway.

Oils to avoid are canola, peanut, sunflower, safflower, and really any other oil I don’t mention below. Long-story-short, they tend to go bad fast (the why is the amount of linoleic and linolenic acids, which are polyunsaturated and oxidize easily). Small amounts are OK, though, and kits are going to tend toward these oils as they’re cheap and act as a substitute for olive. They don’t add to bar hardness (the opposite, actually), but are conditioning. For bars that will be used reasonably quickly, this is not really an issue.

Later on, if you like it and start doing this from bulk oils, you’ll want to avoid these. My standard is five year stability on the bars (which means they’ll still be just fine fifty years from now!) I’ve only gotten decay on one bar of soap, ever, and it was minor.

Oils to look for are coconut for heavier cleansing and bubbly lather. Palm, lard, and/or tallow as the bulk oil for creamy lather and bar hardness. Olive for conditioning and, surprisingly, bar hardness (olive’s an exception to lots of rules). Small amounts of castor (lather enhancer, conditioning) can also be used.

Beyond that, a quick scan shows so many sample kits I’m not sure what you’re going to like the looks of. I’ll be glad to take a look at kits if you can give me a specific site or place you’re going to go!

          • MBear

I figure this topic is old enough it won’t be a problem if we continue this conversation another post or two – not diluting the current topics with OT blatherstatic. 😉

I’ve been looking at this site quite a bit since they’re reasonably close (at least in the same province).

I guess there’s issues shipping lye and figure it’s easier to keep everything local-ish.

I use modern techniques, including a modern stick blender (Proctor-Silex, in my case!)

I did do it the way my great-great-grandparents did, once. Hand stirring. It took several hours. I’m glad I did it, but never again.

  • Joe in PA

Sure Jan…you’re worried about the money. Maybe if a few churches were taxed, we could come up with some cash? Hmmm? Or better still, Trump and his cabinet stop taking all these trips?

But slightly O/T: I wonder how long before Ms Megyn Kelly has him on her new show? He was a go-to darling of hers over at Fox.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I heard she’s really trying to leave her former persona behind. It doesn’t seem to be working though as one of her first guests is regretting having gone on.

      • Joe in PA

I know, I just read about he second fiasco with Jane Fonda. So sad for NBC. /s

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m hoping that eventually the network cuts their losses and dumps her. Sure she can live on what she’s earned for the rest of her life but I so want her to know she’s toxic on mainstream TV.

The Puerto Ricans moving over might just be the secret sauce to do the trick. I do believe they’ll remember just how thoughtful the GOP was to their plight.

  • Treant

OT: Here’s a back-shot showing the Euro bars and square bars as well. You can see I unmolded and broke a square bar already. That becomes the test bar for the batch, as is that little leftover round soap.

    https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/feeac7aa5de0d2a94af8be469d5caee19cecbe07ba1a3e71876d19551abefb30.jpg

    • Looks marvelous, Treant!

    • MikeBx2

Very nice. I wish I had a crafty husband.

    • Silver Badger

That square bar looks like a lot of soap. Would you cut it in half when you use it? (So as not to waste any.)
      Edit:
I just read your earlier post. You cut it into tenths.

      • Treant

The big loaf? It weighs just over 3.5 pounds (it’ll lighten a bit as it cures and loses water).

I’ll use my loaf cutter to cut it into 10 bars of soap.

The squares in the blue mold (and the one above the blue mold that I popped out and partially broke) are about 5 ounces each, which is pretty normal for a home-grown soap.

    • johncAtl

That one on the left is gonna take a lot of lube.

      • Treant

It soaps itself up and gets quite…slick.

Hey Tony, just because the treatments don’t work on yours doesn’t make them incurable. You really should send a group email to your “friends”, you know, to take ownership.

Hey, I know! You could pray for them! Tell them the they should forgive you because gawd has.

  • fuzzybits

Obama promoted immorality. Don’t hide it you hateful asshole,it all comes down to “the gays” and how you’d like to eliminate us.

    • sfbob

Being full of shit seems to be a chronic condition as well. Tony Perkins has had it for years!

Go Dodger Blue! Dodgers 2-San Diego Padres 0, after One Inning.

Tonight is the last Home game of the Dodgers’ regular season; they have 101 wins (which is one shy of a Franchise record!) Five (5) more games remain for them to play on the road before the Division Championship Series starts next Friday, October 6, 2017.

Look at the ass on the Padres’ starting Pitcher, Clayton Richard, No. 3, below!

[Edited: Ironically, in the photo, Clayton Richard had just hit in the throat, with a fastball, the guy writhing on the ground in pain, Rich Hill (tonight’s Starting Pitcher for the Dodgers, who is currently winning his career-high Twelfth (12th) game–and just got a base-hit RBI, to boot!!! ⚾️]

    • johncAtl

Nice ass, but did the guy on the ground get a wild pitch right into the balls?

      • Phillip in L.A.

No, in the throat. I have edited the post to add the (extraneous) information about the (ultimately inconsequential) injury.

        • johncAtl

Oh, I see that now. I would freak out if I was hit in the throat.

        • sfbob

He may have had a different opinion about his experience. Just sayin’.

          • Phillip in L.A.

I’m very sure he did! I think he got really, really lucky he wasn’t seriously injured or even killed

    • Sam_Handwich

omg did he get hit in the throat??

      • Lazycrockett

        looks like it. jesus.

    • MikeBx2

It bugs me that the guy on the ground seemingly in pain is distracting me from the pitcher’s ass.

    • MikeBx2

I just read about this. The guy on the ground is Dodgers pitcher Rich Hill and yes, he was hit in the throat. He recovered quickly and threw two more scoreless innings. Now back to focusing on what really matters. haha

      • Sam_Handwich

oh good!!! thanks for finding out

        • Phillip in L.A.

Sorry, I honestly could not find another picture of Richard’s ass!

          • Sam_Handwich

i though you were so mesmerized with his ass that you didn’t notice the guy on the ground rolling in pain

  • Bad Tom

    Perkins’ graphic is hideous:

Getting diagnosed HIV positive isn’t the “final status,” and hasn’t been for twenty-five years.
    ——-
Nor do blood tests come back with the blood apparently unused and a red check mark to indicate a life-threatening result. Perkins is just hateful.

    • johncAtl

Without gays Tony has nothing left to fund raise on. And he knows that source of donations is dying off as younger people don’t care very much if someone is gay. The FRC’s days are numbered.

      • edrex

he needs us. we don’t need him.

    • Silver Badger

Given half a chance, Perkins and his ilk will joyfully bring back the dying years. I lived through it once and don’t want to see them come back.

      • johncAtl

They’re not coming back. Thanks to medications there are 30 year old HIV+ men today that will outlive Tony and his supporters.

        • Bad Tom

Tony doesn’t have enough influence to stop Big Pharma from marketing those drugs to patients who need them.

I’ll take capitalism working for good for a change.

          • safari

Capitalism works if there is a profit. The problem with medicine is that there are plenty of drugs off-market that work just as well that can’t turn a cent that are no longer produced. *This* is where the government needs to step in — along with drugs that’d be cheaper to buy the company instead of cover like Hep-C meds.

          • Bad Tom

            Fully agree.

        • Silver Badger

As a 30 year+ HIV survivor, I hope you are absolutely 100% right. However, drugs are expensive. It would not be too hard to put them out of reach for most Americans. The drugs are only one expense.

          • johncAtl

Good point. HIV is manageable as long as drug prices are affordable for the people who need them.

        • safari

The current research shows if you are a 20 year old and contract HIV the life expectancy is about 4 years less than average. It’s not a death sentence.

    • safari

My only complaint with HIV checking is that I’m terrified of doing it through the proper channels. When I first went to get tested I got a literal 10-page booklet about what it would mean to get tested wrt insurance. The free HIV clinic? Counseling and compassion.

      • edrex

free clinics are typically staffed by people who care.

      • Bad Tom

Times have certainly changed since the 1980s. Getting frozen out of insurance was a big worry. That isn’t allowed for the time being.

What do you think would be the problem with going “through proper channels?”

        • safari

I’m still bothered. My latest physical blood work includes it on its order, but I’ll probably cancel it and go to the weekly clinic since it terrifies me with the uncertainty of what the future holds with regard to insurance.

          • Phillip in L.A.

I agree with you, safari! I always have my blood-tests done at an anonymous clinic–never included with insurance info and regular medical records

      • fuzzybits

We have Out Of The Closet store here. Get tested and do your thrift shopping in one place! https://outofthecloset.org

      • johncAtl

I was nervous as hell with every test, but I think it was maybe my third or fourth test when I thought I might have been careless that had me the most worried. When I got the result in the mail that time I got undressed and got in bed, preparing for the worst. I was still negative. All of my recent tests have been with my doctor or Any Lab Test, so I’m not really worried about proper channels anymore.

      • sfbob

I tested positive in 1985. I got nothing. And my doctor delivered the news over the phone. While I was sitting at my desk at work. Because I was well I was told I had little to worry about since it appeared that only a small proportion of people who tested positive would go on to develop AIDS. Not long afterwards they realized they were very much mistaken. I’ve just been very lucky.

The upside is that my doctor had the foresight to keep certain things out certain folks’ official medical records files. And by the time that ceased being feasible I discovered that my insurance had no pre-existing condition exclusions. I worked for the federal government and although I don’t think the feds were unique in having that in their insurance programs it certainly wasn’t widespread back then. That as much as anything kept me in the civil service. At least I didn’t have to worry, once I went on meds, about having my insurance pay for them or for the labs.

Three years later I went with my (now sadly deceased) partner when he was getting tested at the public health clinic in the Castro. There were pamphlets, there was a live talk, there were videos. A friend of ours was one of the videos. Things had changed greatly in just three years.

I’d rather have information than suppositions.

        • DaddyRay

When I was a kid, I would ride my bike to a bookstore on the outskirts of the city because they had Gay magazines. I bought a few of them and hid them behind the furnace where there was this opening that allowed me to put them above my closet ceiling. I came home from school one day and my mother said my grandfather (who had just retired and was bored) was fixing a crack that was in the ceiling and all of the magazines came crashing down. She wanted to know if I knew where they came from. I remember thinking something like: Seriously, are you that dense?

          • sfbob

I didn’t have a single glimpse of gay porn until I was in my 20s. Seriously. Even though I had the general impression that such a thing existed. One could tell that simply by looking at the entertainment pages of the Village Voice which actually had ads for for some of the gay porn theaters in Manhattan even back in the early 1970s.

He was always a friend to LGBT people and LGBT civil rights. And Playboy included queer voices well before we were mainstream.

What an amazing graphic. Because laboratories find it necessary to stigmatize with a big red stamp. And because they retain the test tubes (red top, not blue) of the blood samples and after getting the results searches them out and puts a nice big red check mark on them to indicate the results.
