Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner Dies At Age 91

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Hugh Hefner, who parlayed $8,000 in borrowed money in 1953 to create Playboy, the hot-button media empire renowned for a magazine enriched with naked women and intelligent interviews just as revealing, has died. He was 91.

“My father lived an exceptional and impactful life as a media and cultural pioneer and a leading voice behind some of the most significant social and cultural movements of our time in advocating free speech, civil rights and sexual freedom,” read a statement from Hefner’s son, Cooper Hefner, chief creative officer of Playboy Enterprises. The company announced that Hefner died in his home at the Playboy Mansion of natural causes on Wednesday.

While most famous for Playboy, the businessman dabbled in all forms of media, including hosting his own TV shows, beginning with Playboy’s Penthouse in the late 1950s and early ’60s. Shot in his hometown of Chicago and syndicated, the show featured Hefner in a tuxedo and smoking a pipe surrounded by “playmates” and interviewing such celebrities as Bob Newhart, Don Adams and Sammy Davis Jr.

Perhaps obviously, I really did read it for the articles.

  • fuzzybits

    Old news Joe. 😜

  • Ninja0980

    RIP Hugh!

  • MikeBx2

Trump clearly had at least some relationship with Playboy. He was interviewed, appeared on the cover and made a couple of video appearances. I hope we hear more about that in the media. Just to make the Evangelicals squirm.

    • bambinoitaliano

Please. The evangelicals fap to playboy before they project their guilt and package into a scam of the century. A thriving business of fap, pray and pay business.

      • MikeBx2

So true, yet they hate getting confronted with their blatant hypocrisy.

      • Prost Seattle

        I just envisioned trump cumrags.

    • David Walker

Isn’t there a picture of 45 standing with Falwell Jr. and his wife in 45’s NY office with the Playboy cover rather prominent in the background?

      • TampaDink

Probably. It wouldn’t surprise me if there is a photo of hair furor standing with the a past pope with a framed photo of him getting a lap dance from his favorite child in the background.

  • bkmn

Lots of highs and lots of lows. Hefner worked hard to protect his income and our right to enjoy porn. He was neither an angel or a saint.

    • Phillip in L.A.

      No, but he was visionary

  • Paula

RIP Hugh. You helped lead the way for the sexual revolution.

  • gaycuckhubby

My comment from the other thread…

    Hugh Hefner just passed away.
He was always a friend to LGBT people and LGBT civil rights. And Playboy included queer voices well before we were mainstream.
His approach to sex, porn and relationships resonated with a lot of people. The loosening of straight peoples puranical views of sexuality made queer acceptance possible

How did you report it? A couple of weeks the little icon on the right that enabled one to report a message as inappropriate and to block the sender disappeared on my screen. Do you still have that icon? If not, how did you report it?

          • ChrisMorley

‘Reporting’ means telling Disqus, and to do that click on the scammer’s name/avatar > a Disqus Screen appears and at the top of that, to the right of their name and the scammer’s Private notice, are three dots … Click those to Report them.
That much you know, and ….

If that no longer appears, that suggests to me you have a problem with the Disqus cookies on your PC/cell/tablet.

            Try
1 Closing your web browser and then relaunch it.
2 If that doesn’t fix the problem, shut down your PC/Cell/Tablet, then turn it on again.

‘Flagging’ is different and just sends a message to Joe, to moderate the scammer’s post.
To the right of the spammer’s post name and time, your mouse should reveal a small downward arrow. Click that.
I then choose the ‘Spam’ notice.

    • JWC

Hugh Hefner ,in alot of ways, with Playboy, to a STR8 world could be compared to Jim French (Rip Colt) in the gay world Both produced works in a somewhat Hedonistic vien and rankled the manstrream. Both also had a sense of quality to their works Although the centerfolds in each were the mainstays driving sales each had excellent articles. Playboy, moreso in the thought provoking manner, Colt more to the sexual fantasies. Both avoided the smut that their imitators seemed willing to push.I feel that as somewhat “originals in their field” both gentlemen held the banner high and raely sacficed style and quality

      • gaycuckhubby

I really need to check out more about Jim. He was before my time but I know he is revered

        • JWC

When he sold his company The new owner canned most of French;s revered nodels when they declined to do porno

        • JWC

He pased away in June of this year Hefner, French and Tom of Finland All artists of a similar time All artist with a view and a plan All at a time of strong social damnation and all in their own way had a great deal of sucess

  • Treant

That’s actually sad. Hef wasn’t an amazing philanthropist, or great mind, or anything else.

And y’know what? He was completely honest about what he was, and he was comfortable with it. There didn’t seem to be a lot of artifice in him. Whatever else he was, I can appreciate that.

    Rest well, Hef.

  • MonochromeMouse

Damn, I always assumed Hugh Hefner was immortal, like Stan Lee.

  • fuzzybits

There used to be a Playboy Club here too.

    • DaddyRay

The Chicago Playboy building was an icon in its day

    • Phillip in L.A.

Yeah, 9000 Sunset Boulevard, I think it was.

  • BeaverTales

He was idolized for doing what many straight men dream of doing.

  • TampaDink

Sad news….but to live to be 91 is an accomplishment unto itself. Rest in peace.

    • Ninja0980

Yup, and to be in good health for it, even better.

  • MikeBx2

Like many who grew up in the 70’s, the first porn I ever saw was a Playboy. But once I found out Penthouse showed men too, I was more interested in it.

  • gaycuckhubby

It’s strange that I’m so saddened by the death of a man known for pictures of naked women. But I am.

    • DaddyRay

It is the end of an era where porn had a bit of class – now it has to be extreme to sell or free if you want people to actually see it

      • Phillip in L.A.

“end of an era” is what I would say, as well!

      • Joseph Miceli

Sad isn’t it. If only someone was doing something like Rip Colt back in the day. No, now its all “bareback cum guzzling twins and their bear stepdaddy.” Bah!

        • joeyj1220

you say “bareback cum guzzling twins and their bear stepdaddy” like it’s a bad thing 😉

          • Kruhn

Hey! I loved the Peters twins fucking each other.

          • Bleep Switch

            Incest? Disgusting.

          • Joseph Miceli

I would trade them all for Pete Kuzak .

    • Jean-Marc in Canada

While I can’t speak for you, I know that for myself, it wasn’t so much the porn but how he dealt with it. He was a playboy in his own right, but he was never sleazy about it. He was a throwback and yet very forward thinking at the same time. Part Lothario, part impresario, part philanthropist and part witty raconteur…in many ways, a renaissance man. Such was his charm and his persona. He was a rogue with class and sass….what’s not to like?

      • gaycuckhubby

        Well said! I agree completely.
He was honest without being crass wnd without being a moralizing bore

    • Treant

And Playboy fiction. I have books of that stuff downstairs.

      • cleos_mom

But where are his companions? Chances are they didn’t flock to him because he was so skilled at pushing every button.

O/T but we had a heat wave where I lived, the lastest one ever recorded.
Of course, I’m sure the global warming deniers will point out the the fact we didn’t break the 90’s once during the summer as “proof” climate change isn’t real.

    • fuzzybits

We broke a record today. It was 91.

      • Ninja0980

        93 here.
        Latest ever recorded

    • Treant

We never hit an extreme high, yet nights were so warm that we broke our monthly record in June, July, August, and are on track to do so in September. Temperatures today were fifteen degrees above normal. At midnight, it’s still 70 degrees out there.

    • TampaDink

It has been ghastly hot & humid here this week….but that isn’t unusual. What is unusual is forcing ourselves to spend a couple of hours each evening cutting up downed tree limbs & hauling them to the street. As of tonight, our pile stretches from one end of the yard to the driveway….and is, on average, about 4′ high. We were lucky…there is a similar home in the hood that is also on the market that now has a massive live oak tree dividing the entire front of the house….unlivable, but probably a better chance for them to find a buyer for an empty lot….if they have the funds to raze what is left.

    • bambinoitaliano

I’m glad ours ended tonight. Back to seasonal fall weather.

      • Ninja0980

        Same here.
Be in the low 60’s as it should be.
Will make looking at the leaves much more fun.

    • Beagle

It was 73 when I left the house this morning, a little after 6:00. The average high temp for September 28 is 76. But it’s supposed to become more fall-like later today.

I knew I read about the mansion being for sale. It would include him still living in it to whomever bought it.

I am within spitting distance of the Playboy Mansion West, which means I am listening to many droning helicopters, plus the additional whine of a drone hovering just above the area

      Yasiel Puig goes yard!

The sort of ghoulishness of fame.

      • Natty Enquirer

“We’re looking at a live shot of the house where Hugh Hefner died just in case his ghost comes out to shake his fist at us!”

        • Phillip in L.A.

Yeah, but what’s the drone for? Is that TMZ’s drone?!?

          • fuzzybits

These days it could be anyone’s.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Charing Cross West. I always take visitors to Los Angeles to the Mansion. You can only get up to a blank front wall and gate (although very, very elegant blankness), and there’s a camera and a speaker. If you hang around too long, someone starts squawking at you out of the speaker.

        • Dayglo

“… wait a minute, that’s not his fist.”

  • Phillip in L.A.

      This is sickening…

Andrew Vrba, Isis Schauer, and Briana Calderas were charged with
first-degree murder and abandonment of a corpse. According to the Post,
Vrba stabbed Steinfeld. The trio then burned the 17-year-old’s body. The
Post went into further detail about how the trio mutilated Steinfeld’s
body. Both women involved in the murder said Vrba “bragged” about
      killing Steinfeld, local media reported.

Sadly they’ll probably get minimal sentences.

      • TampaDink

I hope that you are wrong about the eventual sentencings of these cretins.
At least I can feel certain that local villain, Steven Lorenzo will never be a free human. Although he’s spent more than a decade in federal prison, serving a 200 yr. sentence for date rape & torture, he & his accomplice had avoided murder charges. The sick son of a bitch lived & carried out his crimes (or at least some of them) about 8 blocks from here.

I also tried Hustler (which I liked) and Oui (which wasn’t bad)–they both showed men and women together. And of course, Playgirl!!! Many generations of my spawn perished in celebration of the many and varied delights of Playgirl.

          • TampaDink

Indeed. One of those stories led to a very enjoyable sexual tryst when I was doing college visits, trying to decide on where to escape to from the foothills above the Redneck Riviera. I was devastated when I found out that he’d transferred when I started my freshman year. The story that prompted the late night dorm fuck fest was called “Brothers should do it”.

  • DaddyRay

He will not live to see the evil FANATICS placed on the courts by the demented DEFILER turn the clock back a CENTURY.

    • Ninja0980

Put it bluntly, I expect court packing to be done.
Sucks it has to happen but at this point, it’s the only way.

      • billbear1961

The right’s stacking of the courts with truly deplorable fanatics is one of the things people should already be in the streets protesting, Ninja.

The THREE minimal demands of ALL who believe in GENUINE democracy should be: public access to the Defiler’s tax returns and all his other financial records, a thorough investigation into all the irregularities that occurred in the 2016 election and SECURE elections going forward (paper ballots or trails and an end to voter suppression), and moderates ONLY appointed to the courts (which they demand of US when WE are in charge).

If the right stacks the courts with fanatics in the next few years, yes, it will be necessary to expand the size of courts in future, placing DECENT judges on them to END far-right dominance.

We must NEVER accept bad-faith rulings made by proven fanatics who are out to SABOTAGE the right to EQUAL protection for MILLIONS.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Yes–the sex is important, because it is subversive!

    • CanuckDon

It worked because it involved straight men. It actually did take balls for those men to go against the norms of society’s morality at the time and stand up to the judgement of the fundies.

      • Christopher

Nowadays there are a lot of straight guys doing gay porn.

        A. LOT.

Hilarious that many of our straight allies are literally fucking each other for our titillation and money! Probably why OMM’s panties are always in a bunch. It’s not that they aren’t getting laid, they can’t! Hubby’s off fucking a dude for money.

        • Todd20036

True, but how desperate does a man have to be to be willing to fuck someone he has 0 chance of ever being turned on to?
It’s rather sad. I really don’t like watching genuinely straight men getting fucked because all I see is desperation and/or addiction.
Kind of weird coming from me, I’ll admit.

          • Christopher

            I get what you’re saying.

Desperation and addiction are definitely turn offs. People will do what they must to survive, or get their rocks off.

I’m personally not a fan of straight guys in gay porn because very few of them look like they’re enjoying themselves. I wanna watch guys who are passionate with each other and really let loose. The best scenes are the ones where you can feel the chemistry between the performers. That’s hot!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy so many hetero men feel comfortable having sex with other men. It’s helped with breaking down the stereotypes of sexuality. But like everything else “gay” it just seems like one more thing that is no longer just ours.

          • Lars Littlefield

            Yes. Odd.

  • houstonray

I looked at my father’s Playboy’s and realized they did nothing for me. Occasionally they had a half naked man, shirtless usually, and that was how I suspected that I wasn’t leafing through the pages like my friends were. Then Playgirl came out and my Mom subscribed to it (yeah they were crazy like that, it was the early 70’s after all) and I understood.

While Playgirl was not connected to the Playboy empire, Hef did indeed pave the way for that magazine (and all the others that followed) to be published. Hustler also comes to mind as the first one I saw that had naked women AND men and they were IN sexual positions. And Penthouse.

I think all of them helped the exploration of sexuality and pushed nudity and indeed sex, toward something not as taboo as it had been. He truly lit the fuse that became the sexual revolution.

Thank you Hef, you lived a most fabulous and incredible life that most of us, Gay or Straight, could only ever imagine. Rest in Peace, you did more than you realized.

    • ByronK

I was always disappointed at the lack of cock when I’d find my dad or my uncle’s copies. Like when I was probably 8 and unzipped the Sticky Fingers album cover only to find underwear.

      • olandp

But it was Joe Dallesandro’s underwear. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/588c4c3bfd34eea2971049885cdb049103629f014bf71ffa252c3c11aac3189f.jpg Little Joe never once gave it away…

I have some photos of “Little Joe” (his arm tat is obviously visible) from “Kensington Road” somewhere (they look like they are from the late ’60s or early ’70s from his apparent age/physical condition, and hair-style). He’s showing it hard. I’ll have to dig those up and digitise them!

          • Paris, early 70s, my boyfriend and I are about to get into his Sportscar after leaving Le Club Sept, I look over and see Joe being refused entry into the club…hot, hot, hot Joe sees me watching and strolls over. He asks us if we want to come to his hotel with him, I’m eager as hell but my bf isn’t into it (for what fucking reason I wonder!) comes up with the lame excuse that there are only two seats in the car…I translate this to Joe who says to me ” I can sit on your lap” oh hell yes I’m thinking but bf again says no. To this day I regret not saying to Joe
“FUCK him, let’s get a taxi!”

          • Phillip in L.A.

Great story, Paul! Thank you for sharing!
Definitely agree about the “sitting on his lap” part–that sounds like a page out of my playbook!

Hope Sportscar bf was worth it! 😎

        • I “had” a friend years ago who was one of The Factory boys, swears it was his dick inside those undies. I remember just how huge Corey was/is so I believed him. One of the biggest dicks I have ever, ever seen.

Edited to add, much bigger than Joe who had a very nice dick.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Very well said, houstonray. Eloquent, even!

The one thing that did turn me on about Playboy is that it turned other men on!

      • gaycuckhubby

        👏👏👏
        Same thing, well put

      • When I was in 8th grade, one day in the locker room after gym class the sound of chuckling got my attention. I looked over to see Terry Webb standing in his tighty whities holding a Playboy magazine…with a magnificent boner. I almost plotzed. The fact that he wasn’t trying to hide it but in fact was directly facing me – it was just the two of us in our aisle of lockers at the moment – has mystified me for more than 50 years.

Oh, and has been a jack off fantasy for just as long ;-))

Last night’s Modern Family touched on similar things.

The family is on vacation at a lake they’d visited when Mitchell was 13.

He’d hung out with this other boy and he got up his courage and kissed him. The guy said he wasn’t into it and Mitchell never made the first move on a guy again unless he was absolutely sure he was gay (hence Cameron).

The guy now runs the bait shop and Mitchell decides to apologize.

So you’re undoubtedly thinking the guy turns out to be gay and was too scared.

Nope. The guy knew he was gay long before he was 13. And wasn’t into Mitchell. Mitchell, who as Mitchell pointed out, was the only other gay kid for miles, at an age where a breeze makes you horny.

          Ouch.

          • Dayglo

Mitchell explained to Jay that “The Bait Shop” wasn’t the name of a local gay bar.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Wow! Lucky you, Paul in Leesburg! All those naked boys I serviced (with towels) in the Jr High showers, and not one got a magnificent boner

    • Ted.OR

I knew where my dad had his copies hidden, and I’d always take a look, just in case. And then, August 1963, “Shel Silverstein Visits A Nudist Camp”. I kept a special tab on that one. No frontals, but lots from behind. Damn, how much jizz did I lose to that one.

Then in the mid to late 60’s, they actually did start showing male frontals. Especially in “The Year In Sex” and “History Of Sex In The Movies” series, but also in other articles. I was in college at the time, and would pick up the latest copy at the 7-Eleven, just in case it was a “good month”. I especially remember one article that was a pictorial of a rehearsal of “Oh Calcutta”.

      • Phillip in L.A.

Damn kids don’t know how easy they have it. Porn didn’t used to grow on computers l you had to go to a sleazy neighborhood and buy it

        • CanuckDon

Yeah…but they’ll never know that thrill of stumbling upon a dirty magazine and keeping it hidden.

          • gaycuckhubby

I finally got the courage to get my hands on some gay porn. Was freaked out, nervous, horny, scared, turned on. Decided to hide them in the drop ceiling in our basement. Lifted up a panel and out fell a bunch of my brothers porn. Lol
            Never told him about it

          • CanuckDon

I remember quickly grabbing two magazines in 1980 and nervously paying for them quick. One was Honcho and the other Torso. Ooh….the excitement of hurrying to the car and tearing off the cellophane!

          • gaycuckhubby

I can’t even remember the name of the magazine that I got, this would have been in the late90s.
It was inside a Barnes & Noble while my mom waited in the car outside.
I told her I needed a book of poetry (which I did, Walt Whitman and it change my life)
I was 16, I have no idea how they let me get that magazine without checking for my ID.
but I shoved it in my bookbag and was so nervous on the ride home!

If you have a good relationship and he didn’t turn into one of those people who pretends they were pure as snow in youth, I urge you to tell him the story – in private at first. Then he can decide if he wants to roll it out for select family consumption.

          • gaycuckhubby

We never talked about sex much. But he’s definitely no saint. LOL

“Keeping it hidden” was half the fun and excitement–knowing one might be caught by one’s older/younger brother and . . . 😉

        • Tom Furgas

A friend of mine once went to a “smoke and book” shop to buy some skin magazines. The old lady behind the counter scowled at him and said “What are you buying that for?” He replied “I like to look at pictures of naked people fucking.”

  • Ninja0980

Speaking of people living long, just watched a Murder She Wrote episode with Norman Lloyd in it.
He is still alive and kicking at 102 and good for him.

    • TampaDink

And Angela Lansbury is still working at 91!

      • Ninja0980

        I hope she lives forever.
My mom isn’t sure if she can still watch MSW once she’s gone.

        • TampaDink

I wouldn’t wish living forever on anyone.

          • Ninja0980

            Me neither.

          • TampaDink

In fact, I was thinking earlier….91….is a very long time to be alive. I’ve been living with disabilities all of my 54 years…and my soul focus/ purpose in life is to outlive my 87 yr. old mother. Losing her eldest son 17 yrs. ago aged her a decade overnight….I wouldn’t want to cause her (and others) more grief….so I keep taking all of my meds & have a very close relationship with my cardiologist.

          • Phillip in L.A.

I worked for a few years in an establishment where a large percentage of the clientele were quite advanced in age. One remarkable woman, ‘a Cockney born and bred,’ (as she herself said) confided to me one trying afternoon one of her secrets:

            –“It’s all down-hill after 80.”

          • TampaDink

I recently visited my mom’s former next door neighbor when I was up in Tallahassee…Vivian is in the process of moving out of her townhouse into a new retirement apartment….”because I’m just not ready for assisted living!”…..she is 100!

          • BudClark

Southern women aren’t called “Steel Magnolias” (my drag name was “Titania Azalea”) for nothing (chuckle).

          • Phillip in L.A.

            You’re such a good boy!

          • TampaDink

I am rarely called good….but even at 54, I do enjoy being called boy.

          • Reality.Bites

I’m 59, and while I have more goals than outliving my parents, I appreciate the need to outlive them. My father has dementia, and he’s at a stage where his short term memory is bad, he knows and remembers everyone. So the rest of the family would be in the position of having to constantly remind him I’m dead, or create a fiction where I’m still alive but can’t see or speak to him but am perfectly fine.

            It’s too awful to contemplate.

His mother, on the other hand, outlived not one, but TWO adult children (in their 60s and 70s) and took it in her stride.

Unsurprisingly, she was not deeply mourned.

          • BudClark

In a family with long histories of cancer and heart disease, my older sister is 87 and still kicking. I think it’s mostly because she WILL outlive an aunt who lived to be 90, or die trying (chuckle). Aunt Almeda (Daddy’s sister) was cordially hated by the Hubbards and the Spences (Mother’s side of the family).

A friend of mine during the time I was at Oberlin College did a major sociology paper on the more subtle manifestations of matriarchy in Southerners (black AND white).

Just one example: all the FEMALE relatives on BOTH sides had names / nicknames; most of the MALE relatives were known by their relationship to the females … “Aunt Ebbie’s husband” (rather than “Wogan,” his first name), etc.

          • Reality.Bites

I wouldn’t wish having to watch MSW forever on anyone.

    • Dayglo

My late father had a running joke about the elderly celebrities featured on “The Love Boat.” He once told me “Tonight’s special guest is Thomas Edison.” Now the joke is on my dad, who would turn 100 next year … and would’ve hated it!

    • Avenger280

Carl Reiner is still around too. I think he’s 94.

          • TampaDink

I clearly recall reading (in my oldest brothers collection) an amazingly funny & erotic story called “My Penis”, about a teenage girl who wakes up with a very well functioning cock.

          • Phillip in L.A.

There was some outstandingly snarky (and just plain outstanding) writing–way before snark was a thing–and I suspect most of it emanated from P.J. O’Rourke

          • TampaDink

I think that you are right about that!

          • Ted.OR

They also had a series, I think it was called “Photo Funnies”. It was a multi-panel cartoon, but used photos instead of drawings. One in particular, the guys are in the locker room talking about “slipping their girlfriend the salami”. Then a rather ordinary guy comes in, and when he undresses, they all see he has a great endowment. The subject changes to the importance of non-sexual pleasuring a woman.

          • TampaDink

            I missed that one.

I read the History of Sex: Playboys history of the sexual revolution a couple of years back and it was a really fascinating read.

      • bambinoitaliano

Playboy in a twisted way is a channel for some gay men to express their sexuality. There were no identifiable role model back in the days. Many gay men live through the playmates overt display of sexuality. Wanting to be the object of desire. An opposite and willing role apart from the women.

        • Phillip in L.A.

There were almost none in the ’70s and precious few even into the ’80s

          • TampaDink

Turning into Sophia Petrillo for a moment here…
Picture it, Valdosta, GA the fall of 1982…my freshman year in college & learning that my best friend/fraternity pledge classmate/and first boyfriend had a collection of Blue Boy & Honcho magazines…which were readily available where he grew up, in the suburbs of Atlanta.

          • Phillip in L.A.

The definition of gender roles are still rigid but we are slowly expanding the minds of many in regards to sexual identity. We are more than just the sexual organs we were born with.

It’s always sad when someone’s soul mate dies. I send my condolences to Donald Trump over the death tonight of Hugh Hefner.

Lol… I swear, us gays are more upset by this than the straights on twitter.
    Why I love being gay.

    • TampaDink

Well yes….there is that…and also all of the lovely penis play.

    • CanuckDon

That sort of states the sad consequence of being straight and privileged. You don’t recognize something of value like a man who liberated your sexual lives.

      • gaycuckhubby

So many straight men are benefiting from playboys influence. Open marriages, threesomes, porn on demand, sexually empowered women…

  • Sam_Handwich

    Thanks for the mammaries

      heh….many have asked.

BTW-that white party pic was the bees knees….awwwww…..cute. With that thick beard you must have really stuck out from the crowd. 😉

      • DaddyRay

I did – everyone there was a muscle clean shaved no chest hair LA twink and I was the lone dark haired furry bearded guy. I really did feel like an animal in zoo. I don’t think I have ever been petted that much

        • TampaDink

You have a pelt that needs to be petted…heavily & often.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Oh, well, at the White Party. But actually I am surprised there hasn’t been more movement toward hairier guys, even among Circuit Party queens

        • Cuberly

lol…well, it had to help that you’re one handsome fella….

          • DaddyRay

with all of that attention I somehow managed to go the entire weekend not getting lucky – probably why I never went back to White Party

          • Phillip in L.A.

Gurl, you went to the White Party and DIDN’T get laid?

          • DaddyRay

            I Know Right

          • DaddyRay

It was mostly due to this chick who latched on to me. We had a really fun time but she really did manage to drive away some close hookups. I have no idea who she was but I met her the very first night and she kept hanging on me like I was her husband

When did they start allowing women into the White Party? I must confess, I never saw one there, but I only went once, in the mid-’80s. There were DEFINITELY NO WOMEN allowed into the Black Party of the same era.

The only time I got a boner looking at Playboy was when the magazine showed a full frontal image of porn actor Harry Reems in the early 1970s.

You almost NEVER saw dick in the magazine. So, I was…delighted.

            Not fun at all.

          • TampaDink

That is heartbreaking. Tina has destroyed countless lives.

          • Ninja0980

It has, which is why it sickens me that sites like pornhub and xhamster actually have videos showing that or people on it.

          • TampaDink

            Yeah….I hate that too.

          • gaycuckhubby

It’s not for everyone 🙂 and takes LOTS of communication and trust

          • TampaDink

We have the trust…communication isn’t always easy. But there is hope, as our relationship progresses. We’ve only been together for 30 years*, so I’ll give it time.
*Except for 4.5 yrs. when we weren’t a couple….and he was fully accepting of p.o.s. boyfriend that I lured to move here from the midwest. We were never not friends….he even lived here with us for a few months….and moved back in soon after I tossed the big mistake/midlife crisis b.f. out on his ass.

          • Ninja0980

We have the trust but as you said, communication is key.
Trust for me took a while.
Not just because he was bi(awful how they get treated) but after my ex, was leery of fully trusting anyone for a while.
Not at the 30 year mark yet but will soon be at the 14 year one, so it’s a start.

          • TampaDink

          • Ninja0980

The first couple years he showed a lot of patience.
We didn’t have sex until we had been dating for a few months (after my ex I was going to wait) and I also (sad to say) did almost break up with him due to him being bi.
Had his issues too but all water under the bridge, just as yours are.
May we both have many happy years to come.

It’s a fetish that has been on the increase in gay relationships and porn. (Since the acceptance of gay marriage?)
Several sex researchers (and Dan Savage) are working on the first ever research paper on the phenomen. Huffpost also did an article on it recently.

        • TampaDink

Dan Savage is one of my heroes.

I sometimes conflate Savage with Signorile and/or vice-versa

      • Ninja0980

Rather see that on porn sites then gay4payers that have ruined most of amateur porn these days.

        • TampaDink

Me too….and for some reason, orgy porn is too hard for me to follow & more often than not has loud house music, making it hard to hear the spoken words….which always do it for me.

        • gaycuckhubby

Between gay4payers and videos of guys “slamming” amateur porn can be rough. Need a bit of Hefner class

          • Ninja0980

            I HATE the slamming videos.
Seriously, how is it sexy in any way to watch someone inject themselves with drugs while having sex?

He really left a mark on the world

  • Stuart Wyman-Cahall

It’s complicated. It’s cliche to say that. But it truly is. I’m conflicted about the double edged sword that is represented in the life of this iconic man. Who here thinks that in part we can have a Donald Trump in the White House because “pussy grabbing” is a bar so low that it doesn’t matter anymore?
There is no doubt that this American genius built an empire based on the objectification of women. That’s difficult for me. HOWEVER, he was a staunch defender of the rights of Americans to freely express themselves both politically and…ahem… sexually.
Hugh Hefner quoted: “This is a religious nation, but it is also a secular one. …No one should have to subjugate their religious freedom, and no one should have their personal freedoms infringed. This is America and we must protect the rights of all Americans.” He was editorializing on gay couples being allowed to marry.
R I.P. Hugh Hefner. You helped change the world.

I’m not conflicted, but I understand why others could be

Who decided to share it once he was done chewing. I saw this pic on another blog earlier. The “steak” looks like badly cooked Chinese eggplant and it looks like there’s a grain of rice (or a small maggot) sitting completely out of place on that closest piece. And why would someone put peanuts on those gross globs of rancid Miracle Whip?

          • Lumpy Gaga

I saw that as a peanut, but common sense got a hold of me and I thought it surely must be something else, because they wouldn’t dare.

            Apparently, they did.

There was often a section in Playboy entitled, ‘Sex in Cinema’ There was always lots of boobs to see but I was after the male stars that may have flashed some buttocks and once in a while there was unfocused dicks, but always a great chest. It was enough for my teenage fantasies to induce well being in my loins for a few hours or minutes…

    • houstonray

OH MY GOD I totally forgot about that! You’re right I always snagged my Dad’s copy and flipped right to that hoping for some male nudity….

  • BeaverTales

My sense of esthetics was very different from Hugh’s. Those women pictured above all look like silicone enhanced clones of each other….just like Fox News anchors. His idea of diversity mirrored a hypothetical “Girls of Breitbart” than the refinement of a true global connoisseur. When you saw one Playboy, you saw them all. I always liked the girls who looked more natural and less processed for mass consumption. ‘

My preference in men is the same.

I tend to like more diversity in my diet when it comes to men. My tastes turn a bit more toward the exotic.

  • Max_1

A story, about Play Boy and a pic… (NSFW)

My parents bought a property back around ’72 on a lake near Spokane Washington. It was a beautiful two floor, three bedroom/one bath spring thru fall house/cabin. Big, big snows back then and it was built halfway down the hill side, with the waterfront approximately 150′ further down hill from the cabin, and the drive in was on a slope that was near impossible to navigate in four foot deep snow (think, pre-4wheel drive). That drive lead to the main floor entrance, but because the cabin is built on a steep hill slope, that entrance is actually on second floor. The first floor (or basement if you think the landing is floor one) was all cinder block and always crappier X10. But it was theirs…

Interior all golden honey knotty pine on the main floor and kitchen (shared open space throughout) with a vaulted ceiling spanning 3/4 of it’s entire length, with the last quarter as a drop ceiling over a full kitchen sans the dishwasher (that’s what kids were for). The person whom they purchased it from was a collector of all sorts of stuff. Stuffed heads and the like, on walls (12′ then the pitch up another 10′ to the vaulted peek) with beams spanning across to full windows on the lake view side. Antique furniture dating back into the 1800’s featuring an upright radio that stood 4′ made of solid carmel patterned mahogany. I remember dad and my brothers first getting around to inspecting its condition. It turned on and cut in and out… Possibly a tube burning out or a short… So they moved it around and took off the cardboard back, this pic dropped out…

  • Ninja0980

Glad to see Sam Bee mention the Federalist Society tonight.
Of all the things so many people are ignorant, the Federalist Society is the worst.
Every right wing judge we’ve come to know and hate and many Senators as well like Scalia, Lee, Cruz, Roberts, Gorsuch, Thomas, Sykes etc. have come from the Federalist Society.
They have been working to make all the courts into right wing hellholes since the 80’s and have sadly succeeded.
Damn shame that only in the past few years have liberals/Democrats begun to fight back.
Sad to say, unless we do court packing, it’s almost too late to turn back the damage done.

    • Lazycrockett

I thought of you when Bee started talking bout appointing judges.

      • Ninja0980

        Aw thanks.
On a serious note, I know some folks get tired of it but Democrats have to start talking about the courts and how important they are in order to maintain all the rights we’ve gained and the ones we need in the future.
Put it bluntly, Obama, Democrats etc. dropped the ball.
Yes they talked about Merrick Garland but Trump had a list of 20 people he would pick from to put on SCOTUS.
Where was the fuck was Hillary’s list at?
Why didn’t Hillary talk about the fact that aside from one bigoted asshat on the 2nd Circuit, all of the judges her husband appointed to the courts upheld LGBT rights?
Why didn’t Obama do the same thing?
Bottom line, only one side really talked about the courts day in and day out and it wasn’t our side.
The fact is even if Trump serves only one term, several courts including the 3rd/7th and even the 9th are going to become right wing hellholes.
And that isn’t even touching SCOTUS.
Ahem.. too late to go any further on this rant which I’ll bring up again at some point.
Glad Sam Bee is talking about it, might be the only way to get our side to pay attention.

Saw this comment over on Huffpo – I think there is something to this idea

“Quick – someone tell Donald his dream job just came on the market! Complete with a mansion and a 31 year old blond to keep him company. He’s obviously not having fun at the White House, but the Playboy Mansion? Donald, this is the job you really want! 75 million Americans are hoping you’ll take the job, and we’re sure you’ll do it bigger and better than Hef. Donald – don’t miss this opportunity. Also some entertainment folk are helping as well. They always bitch about Hollywood “elite” who they demand should zero out their bank accounts but it’s the Mercer-Koch-Adelson billionaire elite they should be attacking instead but are always quiet about.

        • TampaDink

J Lo, Mark Cuban & Pit Bull are doing more for the people of P.R. than the trump administration/crime family is doing.

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I’m just sad a cruise liner is doing more than our freaking government.

      • TampaDink

There is a certain sadness combined with disgust about that.

        • Ninja0980

Indeed.. and conservative writers trying to claim the liberal media is trying to make Trump look bad.
Yes, I’ve seen the tweets saying stuff has been sent etc. but that isn’t matching the reports on the ground at all.

          • TampaDink

The conservative media…and conservative voters need to get their heads out of their asses & pay attention to the shit hair furor is & is not doing….because it will have long term implications for them too.

          • Skeptical_Inquirer

A lot of PR people will probably migrate to the mainland (it’s not a wish, it’s something speculated in various articles) and they’re going to remember which party shat on them. And they’re not going to be quiet about it either.

          • TampaDink

This will help us liberals out…as well as helping them to get out of an abandoned & forgotten U.S. Territory.

I know there’s a financial reason for this, they need the ports and the infrastructure there to support tourists, but still. Way to go, cruise lines!

    • zhera

I wonder, the people who are evacuated… where do they go? Is FEMA on it?

      • Ninja0980

A lot of them will likely go to Florida and NY.
Suffice to say, Republicans are really, really nervous about the former.
Rubio, Scott and others can try and praise Trump all they want, it won’t help him or Republicans anymore then what happened with W under Katrina.

        • DaddyRay

And since they are considered US citizens, if they register they could vote and you better bet they will remember what Trump did (or didn’t do)

          • Ninja0980

George Sr. almost lost Florida in 1992 after Kate Hale, the EMD for Dade County went on TV and asked where the hell was the Federal Government at when folks needed food, water and more after Hurricane Andrew hit.
A state St.Ronnie had won four years earlier by 33 points Bush sr. won by a point.
If nothing else, you have to wonder how his son didn’t see that when Katrina hit.

          • DaddyRay

Since Puerto Rico is mostly Democratic, I wonder if we could encourage them to relocate to purple districts and influence the vote.

          • Ninja0980

Don’t think we’ll have to work too hard on that.
Most of them will likely go to NY/NJ or FL.
And you can bet wherever they go, they won’t be voting for a party that has Trump at the helm.

          • DaddyRay

Yeah but if we could somehow influence where they might look to live it could be helpful in turning things around especially in this next election which will set the stage for who is in power for the 2020 census

          • TampaDink

Florida needs to turn back to blue as it once was…desperately.

          • Ninja0980

Florida Democratic state party has to get its act together too.
I just don’t get how Alan Grayson and Patrick Murphy were the only folks we could get to run against Rubio given their histories.

          • TampaDink

I agree completely! Even though Bill Nelson has not been as effective as I’d like, I’m glad that he’s running for reelection. I’m also on board for Gwen Graham, daughter of former gov. & sen. Bob Graham’s run for governor.

          • Ninja0980

She should be a shoein as long as folks can rally around her after she wins the primary.. which is another problem our side has.

          • TampaDink

Even if she doesn’t win the primaries, I will support whoever is the Dem. nominee….just as I have done in all elections dating back to college.

          • Ninja0980

            Same here.
All I’ll say is this for 2020, don’t let Cuomo anywhere near the top spots.. way too much baggage.. and much of it valid.
He isn’t his father’s son, not by a long shot and what he has done with allowing Republicans to control our state senate…nope.

          • TampaDink

There have been times when I had to hold my nose to cast a vote for whoever the DNC nominated….but I will always settle for voting for an iffy Dem. over an rethug.

          • Ninja0980

            Same here.
But unlike Hillary, Cuomo has plenty of baggage too, and most of it is real.

          • TampaDink

We can only do our part to support whoever is running against him come primary season….if he runs.

          • Reality.Bites

    • Silver Badger

I was wondering why we weren’t seeing a flotilla of Americans bring aid to Puerto Rico in defiance of trump.

  • greenmanTN

I’m curious to hear what the lesbians and straight women here have to say about Hugh Hefner. On one hand he was a major influence in the sexual revolution, sex isn’t “dirty,” but Playboy also objectified women, airbrushed them to hell and back.

I don’t have an agenda here, just truly curious.

Totally stupid but funny, Anna Faris as The House Bunny, a Playboy Bunny who becomes a sorority house mother.

    https://youtu.be/He6oImeCmo0

    • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think it’s OK to say that Hugh Hefner has a mixed legacy. (If one can have mixed feelings about dead family members, I think it’s perfectly all right to do so with strangers whose work has had long-term societal effects) I think that one can be glad he pushed against puritanism and shame but also wonder about the setting up of unrealistic beauty ideals. The earlier stuff is way more natural, IIRC.

I’m also anti-airbrush since they often do it to excess and it’s so wrong. This is a non-porn example. People have been asking if Lara Croft is half giraffe because they shopped her neck.

Perhaps to a lesser degree but men feel it as well. I sure as hell don’t have washboard abs though at times they look like soggy laundry.

    • He also basically popularized the idea of straight men directing straight women in to making “lesbian” porn for straight men’s pleasure.

The number of times I’ve thought “come on, lady, you’re not even wet, only men wouldn’t recognize you’re not really enjoying this and are faking an orgasm…”

      • greenmanTN

Just so you know, I’ve faked orgasms before and it’s harder for a man. Thrash around, yelp, give a big ole Uhhhh! And pretend it happened.

The lack of ejaculate was hard to explain, but confidence carries the day. “Are you kidding?! I was practically bathing in Jizz!”

My dad had “dirty” magazines. When I was really young it was magazines like Cavalier, which carried early Stephen King short stories (those would be collectors items now!) and Playboy. Later he had a few Hustler magazines. I think I can date my homosexuality to the day I found the Hustler Scratch-n-Sniff centerfold.

(Totally kidding but it was pretty gross.)

At least Hustler showed some dick every once in a while.

    • Max_1

Before I came out, in college I would buy a Hustler if there was dick in it…

      • greenmanTN

Remember there was a section in the back of amateur photos of women, usually Polaroids, and there would be ONE picture of a nude guy labeled “One For The Ladies”?

35+ years later I still remember a photo of a very scrawny bleached-blond woman seated on a toilet, showing the Beav. But she had a fork in one hand. Why the fuck does this woman on a toilet have a fork in her hand?!

My ideal of heaven/afterlife is that we die and get all the answers, ALL of them, JFK, Area 51, whatever. (Just an example, not positing a conspiracy theory.) But one of the things I want to know is why she was holding a fucking fork!

        • Max_1

On a toilet, no less… Forks = eating.
Was she ‘presenting’ or just knees apart?
The former + Fork = pie time, if you know what I mean.
          (you supply the whipped cream)

          • greenmanTN

First off you have to remember this is something I saw neariy 40 years ago so my recollection of it might not be totally accurate. But. Bleached blond woman on a toilet, legs spread though not really pushing toward the camera, scrawny and with kind of droopy tits IIRC, but she has a fork gripped in her hand, tines pointing up.

I’m not an innocent so I’m aware of what it COULD mean, but it didn’t have that feel at all, more “Here I am, sitting on a toilet with my legs wide open, waving a fork around because that’s just what one does!”

        • AmeriCanadian

I totally remember those “Polaroids”. I would always go straight to the Hustlers that my dad had “hidden” to look for the guys, which were almost always featured in Hustler.

          • greenmanTN

My dad had 8mm porn movies in a locked cabinet in the barn. So I would unscrew the hinges and open the door that way. He had a locked metal box in the house. So I would knock out the hinge pin and open it from the back. I was the Wile E Coyote of hidden porn.

The older boys from down the street were easy marks for those movies, though of course I had no idea that naughty things would happen when I invited them. 😇

Can’t remember which gay magazine it was (the Advocate maybe?) that interviewed Hef about 20 years ago and bluntly asked him whether he had ever experienced sex with another man. Hef said yes, he had, and more than once. He went on to say that he felt it was important to sexually experiment with what is available out there. Quite an enlightened attitude.

As a person with so many ties to the porn industry and sex workers, I always admired Mr. Hefner as the person that helped to empower women. It finally became OK for us to use our bodies as we see fit.

Damn shame there are others like him coming to take his place.

Also, remember it was Hugh Hefner that published “The Crooked Man” by Charles Beaumont in 1955. It was met with great criticism to which he replied, “If it was wrong to persecute heterosexuals in a homosexual society then the reverse was wrong, too.”

I think it is no pure accident that in the two pics Max_1 and Ross included below, the girl is lying as being at disposition, whereas the boy is standing with self-confidence and pride. The magazine may have been instrumental in decriminalizing (male) desire & lust – but at the price of presenting women as sexual objects rather than partners – occasionally in humilating outfits – which is one of the reasons for the bad reputation of male horniness; so I can see his success only with big caveats.
I also find the pic Joe chose to illustrate the obit quite telling – a rich old man with three young women, with his hands on their bodies in the most possessive way.
However, probably I´m just being envious …

    • billbear1961

Your qualified praise for him is, in my opinion, spot-on.

      • Frommer_Gast

        Thank you! 🙂

        • billbear1961

          Bitteschön!

Will same-sex marriages–weddings–begin on schedule in Germany on the first of October, do you know, FG?

          • Frommer_Gast

As far as I know yes – but living in Austria I don´t have particular insight – and here in Austria Sebastian Kurz, rising star of the conservative party and as catholic as you can be is an outspoken opponent to marriage for all; and since he will be our next chancellor this is bad news.
Btw – tried to post you a link to a Bach concerto assembled from three cantata movements, quite successfully in my opinion, some days ago but cannot find the posting myself now – so here is the link once again:

          • billbear1961

Please forgive me, FG–I had forgotten you were Austrian! I do–come to think of it–recall, if I’m not mistaken, your firsthand observations about elections there, the presidential election, right?? I’m sorry about the bad news for equality’s prospects in Austria. 🙁

            The music is fantastic–thank you!

          • Frommer_Gast

Sure – the presidential elections were a neverending story due to blunders affecting the postal vote – however with a happy end, the right guy won; however, the elections to parliament will be less exhilarating.

          • Phillip in L.A.

Thank you for letting us know what is happening now in Austria, with Chancellor Kurz, Frommer_Gast!!

    • Phillip in L.A.

So, you are saying Playboy perpetuates the hierarchy of patriarchal structures, attitudes, and biases? Yes, yes it does.

  • anne marie in philly

I read it for the articles too. now my husband, OTOH…he always complained that the centerfolds were blonds.

    • Jerry Kott

But the curtains always matched the carpet.

      • anne marie in philly

yeah, WTF????? my carpet sure as hell don’t match my drapes!

It’s funny when the racists lose their minds.

      • OdieDenCO

        how do you tell?

        • Treant

It’s difficult, but they start making completely senseless remarks that insult the wrong people, insult themselves, or they confuse simple data like what day of the week it is.

    • Halou

Tomorrow we can innundate Charlie with Rebecca Black songs?

      Got him pegged right there.

We don’t live far from Philly-it is a mess and appears to be getting worse.

      • TuuxKabin

I was surprised to see it listed. Don’t know why. I’ve only been there once, a long, long time ago. I’ve gotta get out of this blue bubble more often. Thanks for your comment.

  • yes b’y

RIP Hugh Hefner, and thanks for the fun times when I snuck into my brother’s bedroom to read(lol) your magazines.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Did he ever catch you? Asking for a friend.

      • yes b’y

LOL, no he suspected and put up a hook and eye lock. The lock was easily opened with a broom handle.

        • Phillip in L.A.

Pictures, or, you know…. 😉 How did you account for the sound of the broom handle jiggling nervously against the hook-and-eye? (The sound might alert an alert sibling.)

          • yes b’y

Well. he wasn’t in the house when I jiggled the lock and sorry no pics, lol

          • Phillip in L.A.

Oh, a connecting door between your two rooms! Got it!

If he didn’t die “doing it” I’m going to be very disappointed.

    • Karl Dubhe

At that age “doing it” usually involves a successful defecation. 🙂

As that would be ‘copying’ Elvis, I hope he died peacefully.

    • Beagle

Not reading, but — yawn. “Burrowing” — political appointees being converted into government employees with civil service protections at the end of a president’s stay in the White House — has a long and not-particularly-honorable history. A chance for true both-siderism.

  • rednekokie

Hugh Hefner had more love, compassion and understanding of all people in his little finger than the present administration has in it’s entire body.
Were all people as kind as he, the world would be a much better place, and the world is much less without him.
    Rest in peace, my friend.

  • Tom Furgas

When Woody Allen heard that there was a Braille edition of Playboy he said that people probably skipped the articles and went to the centerfold to rub the good parts.

    • Phillip in L.A.

Q: What do Woody Allen and Kodak® film have in common?
A: They both come in little yellow boxes.

  • John Ruff

    Good riddance

  • pj

when i first moved to chicago i lived around the corner from the playboy mansion. there was always a black limo in the driveway day and night with the engine running to pick up or drop off hefners guests at the airport. i thought that was super cool.

  • pj

i also remember playboy referring to some gay men as inserts.

  • Nick in Pasadena

Playboy was one of my first signs that I was gay. I was 11 or 12. My father kept a stack in his bedroom and of course I snuck a look. Why aren’t these women turning me on? What’s wrong with me? That bare-chested man at the corner of that photo, however….hmmm….

  • Smith_90125

Hugh Hefner, facilitator to at least one of Bill Cosby’s rapes. He very likely knew about it, and kept his mouth shut to protect his own interests.

  • easygoingmister

I remember when the bishop coadjutor gave a Playboy to my grandfather circa 1975. We orchestrated a Harriet the Spy operation to get it from the butler’s pantry while they were around the corner swilling scotch. As I remember it, the cat-burgling excitement was way better than the pictures.

  • 2patricius2

I hope he died doing what he liked best….

  • Lars Littlefield

RIP Hef. You will be missed.

  • infmom

Thought for the day: Hugh Hefner lived to be 91. Jerry Falwell only made it to 74.

  • JCF

    Per always, RIP.

That said: was just listening to Terry Gross’s interview of HH (in ’99). Perhaps unsurprisingly, Playboy (Inc) was Hefner’s reaction to his patriarchal religious upbringing…

…but he replaced it w/ patriarchal sexual libertarianism. It was all in service to males. Female sexuality was “celebrated”…but only as it fit into male ideals. [Primarily heterosexual males, obviously.] And if feminists questioned Hefner’s agenda, he (as in this interview) slurred them as “anti-sex” (and why weren’t they appropriately grateful to “Hef” for doing their work for them? {roll eyes}). Thanks, but no thanks: we’re no bunnies’ objects
