Gay Former NFL Player Wows Voice Judges [VIDEO]

People Magazine reports:

Previously, this singing contestant was a human wrecking ball, but on Monday night, he was wreaking havoc on people’s emotions with his singing strength.

Former NFL player Esera Tuaolo amazed The Voice judges and the audience with his rendition of Andra Day’s “Rise Up” on the premiere of the singing TV show.

Tuaolo, 49, kept his sexual orientation a secret from his NFL teammates during the nine years he was a defensive tackle, but the player revealed on Monday night’s show what it was like to finally come out.

“When I finished in the NFL, I came out to my family. When I said those words for the first [time], when I said that I was gay, it was like this huge mountain just crumbled,” the former Minnesota Vikings player said.

Also winning rave reviews last night was drag performer Chris Weaver, whose performance caused something of a tussle between the judges seeking to be his coach for the competition.

This fine man needs to be my husbear.

    • james1200
    • Ragnar Lothbrok

That’s fine, Adam L is mine.

I’m not done with him, yet.

        • Ragnar Lothbrok

Not what he said last night.

          …… bed.

          • DaMoldBrok

            Bitch fight, where’s the popcorn???

    • HanyBaal

Nice man and friendly indeed. He’s the first pro sports player I’ve met (at the mold Eagle) and he sure leaves an impression.

      • Scott Carpenter

An impression on you or on your mattress? Or both?

        • HanyBaal

On me. Lol. I admired his beefiness while staying monogamous.

  • Nelson Kerr

A great voice and a better story

  • bkmn

    Gotta love him.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

Gonna have to start watching this show.

    • PickyPecker

Some of the talent is good. The judges and their pre-scripted bantering (plus many of the manufactured contestant ‘back stories’) is terrible. Lots of commercial breaks during the show as well. I usually avoid the show.

      • Ragnar Lothbrok

Was addicted to IDOL and had enough.

        DVR is the answer 🙂

        • CanuckDon

I watched Idol for two years. The one thing that I did enjoy was seeing the selection of songs from the past get some exposure to young audiences plus I like hearing clever and different interpretations of those songs…but just couldn’t stand the phony drama of it all.

          • The only episode of Idol I ever enjoyed was the try outs. Those were interesting and seemed unscripted.

          • CanuckDon

I skipped the tryouts and waited til they settled on the final 24 or whatever it was. The cool thing currently is seeing some of those past Idol alumni performing songs with Postmodern Jukebox where you’re reminded of their sincere talents. Haley Reinhart’s musical career, for example, has really taken off because of it.

      • CanuckDon

I despise the entire phoniness of reality tv….from the scripted banter to the intentional quick camera shots of exaggerated facial expression. Blech!!!

      • Lazycrockett

The only reason people watch it though is for the judges and the banter. None of the winners that Im aware of has had any commercial success.

        • PickyPecker

I loathe the ‘over produced’ numbers – to the point where the contestant’s voice is lost. Happens a lot on that show. Same with America’s Got Talent. I try to avoid that one as well.

          • Ragnar Lothbrok

I am rapidly losing interest now.

          • PickyPecker

As I said….some of the talent is good. Makes up about 20-30% of their time-slot. The rest is garbage.

        • Ninja0980

Some of the runner ups like Billy Gilman have had better success, although it helps that he was a singer and star previously too.

      • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

The antics of the judges can be hard to take, especially the gibes (or are we supposed to think it is sexual tension?) between Blake and Adam, like “Pillow Talk” with Rock Hudson and Doris Day. And why do the judges frown and carefully discern and hesitate pushing the button? Why not push it? Is there a limited number of button pushes?

        • PickyPecker

Supposedly they each only have so many spots available on their ‘team.’ I believe it’s all manufactured drama and that most of the selections (including OMG- STEALING) have been scripted in advance.

      • David L. Caster

        A DVR is my defense.

  • fuow

Definitely got a voice. Hate the style, passionately, but can tell when somebody has ‘it’. He does.

    • Gerry Fisher

I know what you mean. Now let’s see if he’s coachable RE that style.

  • Reality.Bites

When I read he was singing Rise Up of course I thought of the 1984 Canadian single of the year from Parachute Club.

We want lovin’ we want laughter again
    We want heartbeat
We want madness to end, we want dancin’
We want to run in the streets
We want freedom to live in this peace
We want power, we want to make it okay
Want to be singin’ at the end of the day
Children to breathe a new life
We want freedom to love who we please

    • Rolf

That’s what I was hoping too.
Love that song, thanks for posting it.

  • Rebecca Gardner
    • Ragnar Lothbrok

Bless you in all ways Rebecca

You are a disgusting bitch, Mary

    • David L. Caster

Which is unfair to toddlers, but I catch your drift.

    • jimbo65

So tired of these assholes playing cute and saying the Democrat party instead of Democratic.

  • FuzzyOtter

How nice that this is the first post to pop up as I pull up JMG on my lunch break, rather than another Trump embarrassment or Republican evil scheme.

    • Yalma Cuder-Zicci

Yes, we need more gay here.

  • Tawdry D’Tails

Usually Tuesdays kinda suck, but I’m liking “Hot, Gay Men Singing Day” on JoeMyGod.

    • prixator

I hope it becomes a tradition.

  • Ninja0980

    Great voice, great story.
Here’s hoping he can go all the way.

He sexually attracted to me. He wants to have sex with me, for sure. It’s just a fact. –Adam Levine on Blake Shelton

  • Mike_in_the_Tundra

I miss Minnesota. Esera’s pronounciation of Minnesota was music to my ears.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada
  • TampaZeke

Wow. That was a curve ball! Did ANYONE expect Esera to pick Blake? What gay man doesn’t jump at the chance to work with a real, live DREAM GIRL? LOL.

  • Gerry Fisher

Sensitive big guys make my heart *melt*!

  • Sam D. Maloney

    Pity he picked the homophobe.

  • Westcoast88

Although, from what they showed on the broadcast, Blake may not be fully aware of Esera’s back story.

    • JCF

      Or vice-versa?
