AUSTRALIA: Kissing Protesters Dragged Off Stage At Anti-Gay Marriage Event Organized By Christian Group

The Australian reports:

Two women have locked lips on stage during an anti-same sex marriage event in Melbourne, disrupting a “no” campaigner’s speech.

The protesters kept kissing as they were dragged from the stage by security at the Coalition for Marriage’s Victorian campaign launch on Saturday night. Australian Christian Lobby chief Lyle Shelton shared a video of the incident on Twitter, saying it happened during an address by anti-same sex marriage campaigner Cella White.

“The protestor shouted ‘fascists’ into the microphone before this (happened),” Mr Shelton posted as he shared the clip. The women were dragged across a sign that read “It’s OK to vote no” before a security guard grabbed one of them around the neck.

“Those seeking change were on message tonight, rushing the stage, acting violently & showing us what is to come. But, yeah, no consequences,” Mr Shelton wrote. Ms White, who has appeared in a Coalition for Marriage ad, is accused of falsely claiming her son was told he could wear a dress to Frankston High School.

A recent poll shows support for the “yes” side slightly eroding.

  • crewman

When kissing is a radical act of defiance.

    • vorpal 😼

I hate that these anti-gay idiots make every public display of affection between same-sex people that would be normal between opposite-sex people into a political statement.

      • DuaneBidoux

Don’t take this the wrong way but I’m not super happy with PDA from anyone. This particular incidence however I definitely make an exception.

        • vorpal 😼

We all have our individual comfort levels with PDAs based on culture, experience, and opinion.

I’m of the opinion that it’s nice to see couples holding hands and being affectionate: I think physical affection is more likely to lead to successful long-term relationships.

Here in Chile, it is quite common to see couples of all ages being extremely affectionate – to a level that would not generally be viewed as acceptable to the US – in public.

          • Regan DuCasse

I’m a usually affectionate person. I grew up in a home that encouraged it.
And during this particularly bad season of bad feeling, I decided to be a “Free Hugs” delegate. I ordered a sweatshirt that says so in big letters.
Can hardly wait to get it, and get started.
I also got my flu shot.
            Hedging my bets, dontcha know.

          • DuaneBidoux

And I was simply making the point that I don’t have a real high comfort level with PDA (hey I don’t even like kiss-cam at ball games).

            Yes it is absolutely relative.

But as I also noted I was quite okay with the display of the 2 women in Australia. To me that’s wasn’t PDA but protest. In my books a totally different league.

        • Regan DuCasse

Hey, THIS cisgender, hetero ally black woman, would kiss another woman just to piss them off too.
And if my kissee…could be Cynda Williams!
          Just sayin’!

      • Sporkfighter

Any deviation from the standard of the day has always been a political statement.

        • vorpal 😼

Absolutely, but it seems to often be the same group of people that focus on all deviations from their standard and cast them as immoral deviances.

          • Sporkfighter

A conservative can be defined as someone who fears losing what we have through any change over the gains we might make through progress. Of course conservatives are usually those doing well under the status quo with little empathy for those suffering under it. With few exceptions, “I got mine and I’m keeping it” has been their motto from the the days of Sargon through feudal Europe, the Gilded Age, to today’s autocracy.

      Don’t you know….love is a revolution. 🙂

  • JohnJay

So when is this thing supposed to be done? And what keeps someone (on either side) from voting many multiple times by just mailing in a form from different addresses?

    • Ninja0980

Not for another month and to your second point.. nothing that I can see other then the threat of jail time.

      • JohnJay

That second item troubles me: Just xerox your form, white out the name and address… put in a fake name and valid address not your own,… and voila: multiple votes with no connection to you. I doubt they can check all addresses and names… being mail in forms.

    • Shy Guy

They’re supposed to announce the results on November 15th.

The forms are uniquely identifiable and have a unique barcode on each one. Of course you can fill in someone else’s if you can get to it before them. (If you don’t get yours you can request a new one, which will have a different barcode, and automatically cancel the first one, in case someone else stole it, or in case you’re trying to vote twice.)

      • JohnJay

OK. That sounds better; ignore my post below on multiple voting.

        • Shy Guy

Yeah. There are still concerns, though. Disagree with your neighbours? Take all their ballots from their mailboxes while they’re at work and burn them. They can request a new one, but you might get to that first too, and many people wouldn’t bother.

It was also reported that you can shine a light through the return envelopes and see which way they voted, and then destroy all the ones you disagree with. (Obviously you need to work at the post office for that one.) They obviously didn’t pay for the speckly envelopes like you get around PIN numbers.

  • Tawreos

The “No” said will be more outraged by two women kissing than they will be about their side telling outrageous lies in order to scare people into voting no.

  • vorpal 😼

It’s NOT okay to say no, and no amount of telling yourself otherwise will make it that way, anti-LGBT bigots.

    • Ninja0980

As with the debate here, people want to make it seem like it’s okay to discriminate against LGBT folks.
      Too bad it’s working there.

      • vorpal 😼

It’s already disappointing how long this took to come to Australia, and now how it’s being handled.

I wonder “how okay to say no” Christian Australian couples would be if we crashed their weddings and said, “NO!”

        • Ninja0980

Never should have been done this way.
Turnbull is creating hate and division for nothing.

        • Circ09

I chose to boycott attending all straight weddings for well over a decade. But I think standing up and turning around or crashing a straight wedding to object to the proceedings is a valid tactic that should be used more. I’m hoping it doesn’t come to that in Australia. But from what I’ve read, the Yes side needs to do a better job mobilizing.

          • Goodboy

Plus you had celebrities like brad pitt and angelina jolie being public about not getting married till SSM became legal. You need everyone involved and I’m not sure how much everyone is in Australia.

          • William

Scotland had a very positive campaign.

      • Tawreos

It works everywhere on the simple minded

        • vorpal 😼

Not at all a coincidence that discrimination and religious conservatism often go hand-in-hand.

      • I have a long time online friend who lives in Sydney. He was coming out of rehearsal one night last week while anti-gay bigots were hanging a banner. He walked right up to them and confronted them. Their talking points quickly switched to anti-immigrant and racist propaganda. Interesting how all the bigotries eventually merge into one.

        • William

Gay sex causes illegal immigration. Or something.

          • vorpal 😼

LOL you don’t know how many times I have heard righty-whities tell me that gay male sex is inherently misogynistic.

The intellectual hula hoops that they trip over and stumble through in the process of trying to justify it so they can demonize us in one more way is hilarious.

          • William

No women were harmed during the mattress mambo that occurred here last Saturday.

          • Regan DuCasse

Trust me, I thank you for that. Your pot, your lid!

          • Regan DuCasse

            LOL!!! I hear that too.
And that’s when I tell anti gay men they are doing it ALL wrong.
They should see how many gay men are pictured with some of the most beautiful, eligible STRAIGHT women around.
            For a few reasons.
If more straight men had gay men friends, it’s not a bad way to meet straight women.
            And because…
Us straight women who have witnessed straight men, not just accept, but embrace gay men as equals, think that straight man is hot as damn.
He’s demonstrating how secure he is in HIS sexuality, that he doesn’t have to disparage gay men.
It also shows that they have a feminist streak in them as well.
Some of us straight women DO know how to size shit up like that.

          • Lumpy Gaga

            Buttholes are for emigration ONLY!

    • JAKvirginia

Um… hold on. Anyone can SAY “NO”. It’s when they VOTE “NO” that the problems begin. Your PERSONAL choice should never be mandated as the ONLY choice.

      • vorpal 😼

I agree, but the slogan is specifically trying to turn it from a voting on human rights issue into a “simply a difference of opinion” issue in its phrasing.

I say no to organized religion, but I would never vote no to others being allowed to practice organized religion.

        • JAKvirginia

It’s also weak. Just add “to hate” at the bottom. Better.

          • zhera

I thought about that. It would be a good counter-slogan.

    • Goodboy

I was waiting for one of them to attack them and sure enough the guy with the yellow jacket headlocks one of them. That was assault. Big brave bigot.

      • zhera

But it’s the yes people who are violent, right?

        • David Walker

Totally. She provoked him to violence. Not unlike “gay panic.” All our fault.

    • zhera

That slogan is the weakest one I’ve ever seen. OK to say no? They KNOW they’re bigots, that they’re denying other people equal rights.

      • Gigi

They were going to go with “Gays are icky and we hate them!” but thought “It’s okay to say ‘NO’.” sounded less judgey.

  • Rebecca Gardner

OMG! Love! Equality! Doing the right thing!
I think I’m gonna puke. How much more disgusting can things be than humans displaying love, wanting equality, and expecting us to support them.

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

The worst part is seeing the second Security guy rush up to them and literally Rip them apart.

    • Goodboy

The amount of money around college sports and the financial corruption would shock the university coaches I knew growing up.

        • Circ09

It should shock everyone today. I don’t understand pro sports being able to use our public universities as farm teams. But there is too much money in it all now to shut it all down.

  • bkmn

Sadly I will not be surprised to find out in a month or two that the “No” side paid them to do this.

    • Ken M

The whole scene does seem very well staged, pardon the pun. Let’s see if names are released of the 2 who were kissing as they were “dragged” in front of a sign that advertised the cause they were supposedly fighting.

The problem with these religious/conservative nuts is their god ban all sex. Other than the purpose of procreation, there’s absolutely no other form of sexual proclivity. They think it’s a cap and trade arrangement with their vengeful god by playing the role of a bigot. For every unwarranted orgasm, they have to condemn someone else committing the same sin.

  • As an American that lived and worked in the closet in Australia for years in the 70s, I’m always amused when Americans are shocked that the freedom to marry is not legal in Australia. This is a main reason why hubby and I never travel there, the important legal protections granted by our marriage would be destroyed there.

  • olandp

But despite the ‘No’ side gaining some ground in the polls, punter support is still very much backing a ‘Yes’ result.

Sportsbet reported this week that 55% of the money placed so far is in favour of a ‘Yes’ result at $1.38.

‘No’ is back out to $3 but has attracted more individual bets than the ‘Yes’ side.

“The money is tipping a ‘Yes’ result but there is a long way to go before the November result,’” said Sportsbet’s Will Byrne.

Newspoll has found overall support for marriage equality has fallen five percentage points, from 62 per cent to 57 per cent, just a few weeks after ballots began to be mailed out.
