Susan Collins: I’m Leaning “No” On Trumpcare [VIDEO]

The Associated Press reports:

Sen. Susan Collins on Sunday all but closed the door to supporting last-ditch Republican health care bill, leaving her party’s drive to uproot President Barack Obama’s health care law dangling by an increasingly slender thread.

Already two GOP senators, Rand Paul of Kentucky and John McCain of Arizona, have said they would vote against the legislation, and if Collins, a Maine moderate, were to join them, the bill would die. All Democratic senators oppose the measure, so “no” votes from three of the 52 GOP senators would kill the plan.

“It’s very difficult for me to envision a scenario where I would end up voting for this bill,” Collins said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Collins’ all but certain opposition leaves the White House and party leaders with one immediate option: trying to change at least one of the opponents’ minds. Collins and other Republicans have said leaders are considering changing the bill to attract votes.

  • Lazycrockett

    “Leaning” ain’t cutting it.

  • pj

leaning? youd actually consider voting for that steaming pile?

  • bkmn

Translation – she knows she is in the drivers seat and is waiting to see what McTraitor will put on the table for her and Maine.

    • paganguy

You mean the way Murkowski has.

      • Chucktech

If she thinks she can hitch her wagon to that falling star she’s in for a rude Constitutional surprise.

    • j.martindale

She is going to lose support if she changes now. The people that were angry at her last time will still be angry at her. And the people that liked her opposition last time will be furious if she supports it now.

      • Jeffg166

No applause walking through the airport if she supports it.

  • A better headline would be the “It’s very difficult for me to envision a scenario where I would end up voting for this bill” quote, I think.

  • billbear1961

This is worse than the last bill, but you MIGHT vote for it?

That makes no sense, at all.

I remember last time that Murkowski refused to say how she was going to vote, for sure, till almost the last minute.

    • Treant

Frankly, they play government and people’s lives as if it were reality television. On tonight’s show, McCain’s “Tune in and watch how I vote” gets resolved. Next week, we get to see what Collins decides.

It’s sickening. It’s supposed to be government, not theater.

      • billbear1961

It IS sickening, and it THRILLS the sickening media.

      • Comixbear

Sadly, with Herr Trumpelthinskin hanging around the White House, they act like the world is a reality show. I’m about ready to swim off of the island myself.

      • netxtown

damn….now I’m hearing the theme to Soap!

        • Treant

You should, except that Soap was hysterical. This is not at all funny.

    • Yixing’s Fluffer

Better to be hounded by reporters for a definitive answers than to have donors order their army of shills to tie up the phone lines.

    • another_steve

She’s holding out hope that they’ll add last-minute sweeteners to the bill. Something that might entice her to vote “yes.”

      She’s scum.

Anyone who identifies as “Republican” in today’s Republican Party is scum.

      • cowboyinbrla

Worse, she’s holding out hope that Murkowski (or someone else) will beat her to it, so she doesn’t have to go on record.

None of them want to be the third vote if they can possibly avoid it.

        • another_steve

          Excellent point.

    • Kevin Perez

It makes sense if you remember that Susan Collins loves to be on TV.

    • justmeeeee

Even more than sticking with their tribes, politicians like to keep their names in the news.

    • well she’s probably pissed that John McCain got all the attention the last time. She wants the praise this time around.

  • Treant

Leaning no isn’t no, and since Collins wants that governorship so bad she can taste it, she’d best be voting no.

    And she knows that.

    • Gay Fordham Prep Grad

also, this is great free publicity for her. If she flat out said “no,” that would be it and we move on. With the waivering she’s the center of attention for a while. (Can’t blame her, really…look with the free pub did for Trump.)

      • Treant

Oh, trust me, I can still blame her. 🙂 I don’t approve of politics as TV stunt.

If she wanted to position herself for the governorship, “This bill is bad for the people of Maine and the people of the United States…”

    • Yixing’s Fluffer

Collins has shaded the hell out of LePage through this entire process. When he urged her to vote for this latest bill she said she listens to *all of her constituents*.

    • Ninja0980

Yup, especially since many Republicans aren’t going to vote for her this time around.

    • Hank

23% of Mainiacs are on Medicaid (MainCare). Le Page has vetoed Medicaid expansion under the ACA 6 times. There is an “admendment” up for voting in November to expand Medicaid, that if it passes, Le Page is shit out of luck!!!

  • crewman

How is this even seriously being supported by any Republican before the CBO analysis is in? Where is fiscal responsibility or conservatism in that?

This fervent hatred of Obamacare is 2 things:
    1) Hatred of how successful the first black President was. It is an insistence in the face of ample contrary evidence, that the healthplan instituted during Obama’s term was a disaster.
    2) A massive tax cut for the extremely rich.

    • Yixing’s Fluffer

      1. GOP has never taken health policy seriously.
      2. Obamacare repeal is getting in the way of tax cuts.
      3. Tax cuts are the be-all and end-all.

    • Comixbear

Republicans aren’t about fiscal responsibility or conservatism. Those are just words that they parade around, like ‘family values’ or ‘human’. They are about money and power and how they can keep and gain more of each.

      • (((GC)))

And racism. Ta-Nehisi Coates writes about tRump owing his political existence to backlash against an entire “[black] presidency” – from a broad white coalition including Joe the Dishwasher, Joe the Plumber, and Joe the Banker – and about the power of racism throughout our political history up to the present day.

    • John30013

#2 in particular is the answer to your question. And this bill is a big stinking pile of #2, as are most of the GOP Senators pushing it.

    • Jeffg166

Responsibility and conservatism an oxymoron if there ever was one.

    • Chucktech

The Republican traitors can’t wait for a CBO score. They have to get this done under budget reconciliation rules where they only need 51 votes.

The blind enmity of Obama and tax whoring are elements, of course, but in this case, time is of the essence. Deplorably disgraceful.

    • Beagle

Because the Rs have spent the last 7 years screaming, “Repeal,” later adding, “and replace.” All along, they’ve ignored the part of what they’re going to replace it with. And that’s what’s driving this — as long as they can repeal and replace with something, no matter how bad, they’ll think they’ve done their job.

      • jerry

And the “replace” part from so-called conservatives is impossible, because the ACA was already the conservative option–created in 1993 by the Heritage Foundation, as a response to Hillary Clinton’s healthcare proposals. Their only option now is total destruction of healthcare in the country.

  • TJay229

    Jake Tapper

So it’s a confirmed two, not three.

    • Treant

More theater. They already know what the whip count is, they’re just being coy to keep the base hopeful and the Dems demoralized.

If you make me guess, the bill flames out 49-51 as it stands right now. They know how bad this is, and they know what the backlash will be. They’re also aware that they’ll lose a court challenge that exempts any states from revocation.

      • billbear1961

If they pass it, this nation SHOULD erupt in the biggest and most relentless protests EVER, because the goddamned thing is nothing less than MURDER, and it would likely cause CHAOS, as well–the goddamned, irresponsible MONSTERS.

        How I fucking HATE them!!

        It’s INTOLERABLE!!

        And it never STOPS!!

        • Treant

Honey, it’s FOOTBALL SEASON! We might miss the game if we protest.

          • billbear1961

            *sighs in EXASPERATION*

          • Treant

Tell me about it. I’ve got torches and pitchforks and they ain’t gonna use themselves. 🙂

          • PickyPecker

Hopefully not the tiki torches from Pier 1 Imports.

          • billbear1961

            Might cause confusion!

          • billbear1961

          • billbear1961

But, but they’re disrespecting the country by GENUFLECTING during the national anthem!!!!11!!

      • billbear1961

Ça fait leur affaire, the media’s, I mean. There are certain expressions that work for me now only in French. I can’t think of an equally satisfying way to say it in English: this is what the media want, too, the BASTARDS!

      • Gustav2

Yeah, they are trying to keep the others in line with this rumor. That way they can go to the donors and say we tried!

  • Bluto
    • worstcultever

wow that’s some quality yuck lol

    • Gerry Fisher

He can do that to my face. Mmmmm, furry! Ooops, did I say that with my outside voice?

  • greenmanTN

I’m leaning toward condemning Ebola and rickets but I need to give it more thought.

    • Treant

I think Americans need to give rickets a chance, which is the reason that I support revoking Obamacare. Every child deserves the chance to be shorter due to rickets, as studies show us that shorter people suffer cancer less often. Clearly, widespread rickets would be a good thing for the people of the US, who wish to avoid cancer.

      • greenmanTN

Oh, for the good old days when citrus was reserved for the right people, if you know what I mean and I think you do.

      • DuaneBidoux

Absolutely! In a list of other popular tactics: cardiac arrest at 50 is a great preventative measure for the misery of arthritis at 75.

        • Treant

Just so! And if I’d died of measles because vaccines weren’t covered, “they” wouldn’t have to pay for my migraine preventatives now!

    • billbear1961

      It’s so HARD!!

And Nazis, are they truly evil??

      *racks brain in philosophical torment*

  • Blake J Butler

Push her to no, gurl wants to run for governor she better vote no.

Or is she just stalling to keep this thing dead and not give the rest of the GOP enough time to pass through another deal by the 30th.

    • blackstar

  • Michael R
  • Kelly Lape

Relying on three Republicans to be telling the truth… my how far we’ve fallen.

  • TrueWords
  • Tawreos

She just told them she can still be bought if they include the right amendment.

  • Matt

How about just saying, “I’m voting ‘no'” if it’s that bad?

  • Jefe5084

Well, lean harder for cripes sake. Drama Queen.

  • worstcultever

    Oh fucking come on, Susie.

Is anybody NOT infected with the Dumpy reality show disease anymore? (“Stay tuned! Excitement!”)

  • MBear

    Yeah. Fock you too

  • Silver Badger

Would an America consumed in civil war discourage North Korea or entice it?

    • medaka

      • TuuxKabin

Sure missed you. Will catch up anon.

  • Ninja0980

    She’s a no vote.
Otherwise the votes she’ll need from Democrats and Independents to make up for the votes she’ll no longer get from Republicans will NOT happen.
IMO they shouldn’t happen anyway since when push comes to shove, she always votes the party line most of the time.

  • ClevelandJim

“Sen. Susan Collins on Sunday all but closed the door to supporting last-ditch Republican health care bill…”

I thought their last attempt was the “last-ditch” one?

    • Gustav2

…until the next one. They will continue this because they can’t deliver on the the tax cuts without cutting Obamacare. There is now talk of a HUGE bill combining the two.

  • boobert

Don’t just lean, take a definite stand !

  • netxtown

    LEAN baby! LEAN!

  • DuaneBidoux

I just found her contact form (which is NOT restricted to Maine residents) and sent her a message. I don’t know if It’s allowed to do this on this forum but anyway:

Let’s make sure the “lean” gets turned into a solid no.

  • Harveyrabbit

She’s just waiting for what Murkowski got… More money/benefits for her state.

“provisions in the proposed legislation are causing observers to scratch their heads because it allows one state–and one state alone–to actually keep Obamacare.”

    • paganguy

Basically, vote for this and and we’ll throw everyone but you under the bus. Cynical and disgusting.

  • JWC

The words i find scary here is “All but” same with the one from Alaska Just say NO

  • Lars Littlefield

If she doesn’t vote “no” she’ll never become governor.

  • Gerry Fisher

She’s got a good bullshit act going on. Waffle a lot to get a lot of media attention, pretend to be giving things “thoughtful consideration” then end up doing what’s politically expedient, which means voting Republican the vast majority of times. She can’t vote for this bill. She’s just media whoring and making it look as if Republicans came up with something unique, requiring analysis and thought (nope).

She’s another fake Maverick(tm) like John McCain’s been for almost his whole career, until his mortality stared him in the face.

  • Dayglo

Don’t cave on this one, M’lady.

  • Hank

I would be a lot more comfortable, if not only Collins, but Murkowski and another couple of Senators came out against it. I do NOT trust Rand Paul!!!!

  • AtticusP

Well, keep leaning, honey. If this thing passes, a lot of your constituents will die.

  • JT

Call it what it is: TrumpNoCare.

  • OdieDenCO

quit trying to build suspense. this isn’t some damn reality show. yes or no!

  • Gianni

She’s always “leaning”. Make up your fucking mind already. This isn’t a goddamned game.

  • CB

23% of the people in Maine get Medicaid, according to the NYT. How does she possibly vote for this?
