LONDON: Many NFL Players Kneel Or Link Arms During National Anthem In Defiance Of Trump’s Attacks

NBC Sports reports:

Many players knelt and those who didn’t linked arms as “The Star-Spangled Banner” was sung before today’s Ravens-Jaguars game in London. The early kickoff from London was the first NFL game since President Trump blasted protesting players on Friday evening, urging NFL owners to fire any players who don’t stand for the anthem.

Jaguars owner Shahid Khan, who donated $1 million to President Trump’s inauguration ceremony, was among those linking arms on the Jaguars’ sideline. All of the players who knelt for the American anthem appeared to stand for “God Save the Queen.” The NFL always includes both countries’ anthems for London games.

Protests are expected across the NFL today, as players who initially protested during the anthem to demonstrate against police shootings are now expressing their opposition to the president’s comments.

The sexual predator in the White House has unleashed a mighty fury.

May it consume and destroy him.

    • Todd20036

The only ones against this are Nazis, and unfortunately for them, they generally love the NFL.

It will really hurt them to boycott it, and the NFL won’t care.

      • Diane Arcuri

You’re an idiot — patriots are against this, not Nazis.

        • Tulle Christensen

A patriot would want to uphold the constitution and not try and force people to act a certain way. You are not a patriot you are a fascist

          • Diane Arcuri

You’re pretty funny. I’m definitely not a fascist. They have a right to kneel and I have a right to think they are ignorant, disrespectful idiots who should do this on their own time.

I can’t do this at my job and they shouldn’t do it at theirs. People go to these games to escape life, they don’t want politics brought into everything.

          • prixator

So, they play the anthem before you start work? Interesting.

          • Diane Arcuri

If they did, I’d honor it.

          • prixator

It’s just a song. Only has significance if you want it to. Some don’t care. Doesn’t make them bad in the least. There’s far more important things to get upset about.

        • Yixing’s Fluffer

Actually, the Patriots are for this.

        • Todd20036

You are not a patriot. You are not for the Constitution, the good of the nation. You are merely for some of the rituals.

You complain about people kneeling during the anthem, but you are ok with Nazis killing peaceful protestors, with police murdering blacks wantonly, with the KKK bragging about “their” president.

You are a Nazi, that’s why you think it’s patriotic to stand with a president who raped a kid, molested women, defrauded thousands, is a traitor the country, and is so inexperienced he is ignorant to basic knowledge about the office he now holds.

          • Diane Arcuri

You don’t even know me you jerk. Who are you to say that I’m okay with people being killed and I’m okay with Nazis and the KKK?! I don’t stand for any of those things, I never have, and I never will. How dare you even insinuate that. You must be looking in the mirror and talking about yourself.

And our president didn’t rape anybody, and certainly didn’t rape a child. But you might want to look at Bill Clinton for some of that stuff.

          • prixator

You conveniently didn’t respond to the FACT that “your” president molested women (more than one – he admitted it and was bragging about it!).

He truly is deplorable in every way.

          • Diane Arcuri

            Net worth responding to lies.

        • billbear1961

PATRIOTS insist their country live up to its PRINCIPLES!

And no honest person believes that kneeling shows DISRESPECT!

        • JustDucky

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

          Ya fucking nazi.

          • Tulle Christensen

Without the help from your post, I doubt our Nazi could list even three of the five rights listed in the first amendment

          • margaretpoa

Or any of the other rights listed in the Bill of Rights, except the second of course and only half of that one.

          • Diane

Do you even know what a Nazi is? Or do you just call anyone you disagree with a Nazi to shut down the conversation?

          • JustDucky

When folks on your side are literally marching with swastikas and chanting “blood and soil” and your President says some of them are “fine people” then you have forfeited the right to cry Godwin.

A few KKK fools don’t represent all of us. And I’m betting there were some good, honest people there protesting the removal of our historical statues that were not with the Nazis and or KKK. Quit trying to say that everyone on the right falls into these extreme groups. Are you Antifa out there burning down buildings and assaulting people? I mean you’re on the left so it must be so, right?

        • margaretpoa

Have you served in the military? I have and though that doesn’t give me any special rights or privileges, it does confer a certain perspective. I can’t imagine any real veterans being angry with somebody for exercising their constitutional rights. I swore to defend those rights and I still take that oath seriously, something which I doubt anybody who crawled out of The Daily Caller can say.

          • GayOldLady

She/He/It didn’t “crawl” out of the Daily Caller, she/he/it Slithered out of that vile swamp of racists, bigots, sexists, homophobes, xenophobes. Fuck her/him/it!

But since you’d like a response, I just say that there’s a lot of hatred being spewed out here and it all seems to be coming from the left, as usual.

          • David Walker

“And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”

Patriots defend the right to dissent and free speech.

Traitors fantasize that patriotism means everyone forced to conform to one point of view.

(And fuck you for being so deliberately dumb about basic concepts of American civics, and for so blindly wanting to be a foot soldier in Trump’s authoritarian dysfunction.)

          • Diane Arcuri

I’m not the one trying to make everyone believe the same thing. You might want to look on the left for that. If we all don’t see it your way then we’re called names. That’s fascism. So I guess, based on your definition, those on the left that expect everyone to see it their way are the real traitors.

        • EdmondWherever

Patriots would want to force ritual behavior and fealty?

          • Diane Arcuri

Nobody wants to force others to actually appreciate the country they’re in and the rights and freedoms they enjoy.

          • EdmondWherever

Since protesting is one of the rights and freedoms they enjoy, I’m sure they appreciate being able to do it.

      • another_steve

Everything the monster says – every single word he says and tweets – is targeted toward his deplorables. You and I and the non-right wing media are irrelevant to him. Targeted toward the 32-36 percent of Americans who are keeping him in office.

If his approval numbers remain that high, congressional Republicans up for reelection next year won’t abandon him no matter what. They’ll need those deplorables to vote for them next year.

        • Todd20036

Yup, but the GOP devolved into the Nazi party.

          There is no GOP anymore.

          • Ninja0980

Yup, my grandparents and uncle saw that back in the 90’s.

It doesn’t matter if you are at your job. American citizens have the right to sit, stand, kneel, or anything else they feel like doing during the anthem or the pledge. It is illegal to insist otherwise. You might want to revisit a basic civics class since you either missed it the first time or have forgotten what you’ve learned.

Or it’s a troll from somewhere they don’t know these things. 🙂

I’m not a kneeling kind of guy anymore. I was really talented at it when I was an Episcopalian.

I’m not a patriot any longer, either. I’ve learned too much about the country where I was born. Geography defining faith and loyalty is a primitive concept.

So, while I wish that the athletes protesting racism in the USA had turned their backs instead of kneeling, I, from a sense of nostalgia, admire their deeply felt patriotism and their struggle for the justice that we were told this country exemplified.

Nostalgia is a difficult realm. Seems some people want to live in apartheid days.

Anyway, when I hear your anthem and pledge, I’ll go get a beer or take a piss.

    • margaretpoa

Why don’t you crawl on back to Daily Caller and tell Mr. Bowtie that there are real patriots at JMG, unlike that fetid swamp he created. Carlson wouldn’t know service if it saved his freedom to be a self righteous, bloviating shithole…and it did!

    • JT

We know what you get paid for.

      • Diane Arcuri

        ??

    • Herald

      Fuck off, crazy.

    • Ken M

Do you stand at home when you hear it played before a game? Just wondering. BTW, they won’t be paying you. 🙂

      • Diane Arcuri

        Yep, sometimes I do.

    • Aw, bless your heart, as my wife would say.

    • Gerry Fisher

If this bothers you more than unarmed black people dying at the hands of police and its linkages to lynchings and church bombings of the past, then you’re useless when it comes to understanding the definition of “horrible.” You don’t KNOW horrible, you privileged troll.

      • Diane Arcuri

Disagreeing with people kneeling during anthem does not mean I in any way condone any of those other things. Get your facts straight.

    • Mark_in_MN

In what world does any of that make any sense whatsoever? Oh, that’s right, in an authoritarian and racist one.

    • edrex

life must be very hard for you.

      • Diane Arcuri

        No, not really.

        • edrex

          well. you just never know.

    • UrsusArctos

Awww, poor little Macedonian basement dweller doesn’t get it that REAL American patriots defend the right to protest, otherwise the tiki crew in VA would be under a federal prison for being active Nazis and traitors.

    • SoCalGal20

      Steve Mnuchin, is that you?

  • Yixing’s Fluffer

Not too surprising. Baltimore is still reeling from the last time desperate/opportunistic politicians cynically fanned the flames of racial animus.

  • Jerry Kott

If T45 wanted to show how Patriotic he was, he would resign. By the Flag, many still see it as a double edge sword- freedom cuts both ways and is a 2 way street..

  • Will Parkinson

Of course, this was Trump’s idea all along. Make them show unity, then say ‘see what I did? If it weren’t for me, this wouldn’t be happening.’

  • Natty Enquirer

Going down on one knee is not kneeling, it’s genuflection, an obeisance which traditionally signifies humility and great respect. So I feel a bit puzzled when I see this display. Is it being used sarcastically?

    • margaretpoa

People are always asked to rise during the national anthem and when on a sports field, chairs aren’t available in abundance and since they start from a standing position, taking one knee is the opposite of rising for the anthem.

      • Natty Enquirer

Yeah, I get the idea of doing the opposite thing. But genuflection does not clearly signal protest to me the way turning one’s back would.

        • Adam Schmidt

It’s a more respectful form of protest. Turning your back would be considered not just a protest but an open insult.

          • Herald

It’s about the most innocuous protest possible, and still the snowflake Trumper base is offended.

          • -M-

            This.

          • -M-

            Yes.

        • margaretpoa

It’s just a quiet form of protest. It’s respectful to the people who are not protesting. By taking a knee, he is being disrespectful to the symbol, by turning his back he would be disrespectful to everybody.

        • -M-

Turning your back is intentionally disrespectful, which is sometimes very appropriate although not necessarily the most effective course even then.

Kneeling is a way of protesting respectfully. I see it as honoring the nation’s ideals while also mourning an egregious failure to live up to them. It says, “I’m not walking out, but I’m not going to pretend everything is fine.”

      • Scout

Yes, sounds like the meaning can vary based on background and culture, and that this is a new meaning starting up.

        • margaretpoa

The nature of change. Otherwise we’d still be sitting in caves, picking insects off one another.

          • OdieDenCO

now we pick chip out of bags sitting on couches. Progress!

          • margaretpoa

            Okay now that was funny.

    • greenmanTN

It’s traditional to stand for the national anthem, so kneeling- not standing, is considered disrespect or protest. Though you are right that kneeling that way also conveys respect. To me that makes it a perfect gesture since it demonstrates both protest AND respect for the country itself if not its actions.

      • margaretpoa

Wish I could have put it that well. Thanks!

    • halfwaythere

As I understand, it is also a symbol: players take a knee when one of them is wounded on the field. They are symbolizing that parts of our nation are wounded.

    • SoCalGal20
    • -M-

In my opinion/reading of it, it’s a way of protesting injustice and calling attention to it while still showing respect to the symbolic moment and those participating in it.

Turning your back, walking out, a black power salute, or just sitting might be legitimately seen as disrespectful or hostile, though they’d still be covered by the first amendment and in some cases hostility or disrespect may be perfectly appropriate. I think those offended by people kneeling instead adopting the traditional stance during the anthem are just looking for an excuse to ignore what they’re protesting.

  • aagold76 .

I haven’t watched a football game in probably 10 years- since Trump called for a boycott- I will be watching all day.

  • GayOldLady

I know many of you are not NFL fans, but in protest over Trump’s harassment of NFL players exercising their free speech rights, all of us need to turn on the NFL every Sunday to protest Trump!!!

    Stand Up, Fight Back!

    • margaretpoa

I don’t watch football but while I’m reading and doing my chores, I’ll have it on in the background.

    • Reality.Bites

      Um, no.

It’s a commercial product I’m not interested in buying and never will be.

And you don’t count in the Neilsen ratings unless you’re a Neilsen family, so you’re literally doing nothing that anyone will know about.

      • GayOldLady

Oh, come on, RB, you don’t have to watch it, just tune in. And your local does have a handle on viewership in certain timeslots, so it will matter.

      • Ernest Endevor

If you watch more than three games it turns you straight. I read that on the internets.

        • margaretpoa

          Then it can’t be wrong.

          • KevInPDX

Wow! That’s a magnificent full muscle bubble… but, I dont recognize the forearm tat?

          • UrsusArctos

Francois Sagat since that tattoo says Sagat in greek, I think. Which is odd, doesn’t he also have a crescent and star tattoo also?

          • John30013

The tat gave it away for me roo. Lots of pen stars have bubble butts, not only Sagat has that tat (among several others).

          • Ernest Endevor

            Caesar.

          • John30013

François Sagat. The forearm tat is another good clue.

        • GayOldLady

Nope, I’m living proof that watching football does not turn you straight.

          • Steve Teeter

            Roger that, madam.

        • edrex

but if you watch four, the players turn gay.

      • John30013

Nielsen ratings are hardly the only game in town any more. With DVRs and set-top boxes in nearly every home, the big tv service providers have better viewer demographic info than Nielsen, and they sell it to the networks just like Nielsen does.

    • So, an MLB player is taking this up as well. I wonder if more baseball players will:

  • Superman

I guess I side with the free speech proponents. I’ve always been a supporter of the First Amendment, even when I sometimes disagreed with the message of the speech itself. I remember telling my father, a military officer, when I was just a teenager that I supported the free speech right of protesters to burn the flag, even though I personally detested the burning. He tried to understand. It was that “I hate your message but I’ll fight to defend your right to say it” mantra. I don’t really believe in the black lives matters movement. I think the black community brings its troubles on itself. I almost always side with the police officers. But if they want to protest peacefully on a football field, I defend their right to do it, and I will try to respect their decision and motives.

    • Tulle Christensen

I guess you are too young to have the gay bar you were at raided by the police and then handcuffed and taken in for questioning

      • Superman

We’re not talking about the 1970’s, are we? We’re talking about the 49ers quarterback kneeling for our national anthem in protest of “cops” and their treatment of “blacks”. In Indianapolis most of the crime is committed by blacks, and if they would knock it off we wouldn’t need so many police.

    • Gerry Fisher

Painting with a very broad, racist brush, there. How do unarmed black people killed by police “bring it upon themselves”? What about the guy who tried to inform the officer that he had a legally licensed gun in the glove compartment, and the cops shot him dead anyway? How about no police officers ever seeming to be found guilty of anything EVER after one of these incidents? Wake up.

      • Bj Lincoln

Exactly! Baltimore will never forget Freddy Gray or the cops who got away with it.

        • Superman

Typical bleeding heart; you’d ignore the fact that they couldn’t get a local conviction or a federal conviction against those 7 Baltimore police officers, even under the glare of the national spotlight. Because the cops were doing their jobs.
The black community has turned Baltimore into a shithole in case you haven’t noticed. And they wouldn’t need a zillion cops if the black community would stop acting like sociopaths. I’d like to see you walk those streets after dark. You can’t even walk the black neighborhoods of Indianapolis after dark anymore, and we’re hardly Baltimore or Chicago. Those cops are our sons and daughters doing a horrible job made super dangerous by a violent community.

      • Superman

Most of the time the cops prevail, just like in Baltimore. Have you seen the crime in Chicago? Its all in black Chicago, black on black crime, destruction of black businesses, and the cops are mostly black too, but the criminals scream about their rights even while they shoot up that town every weekend. All this whining about the black community is so tiresome when they’re the ones committing all the crimes. Or maybe you’d like to take your next vacation to the south side of Chicago and come back and tell me about the poor oppressed blacks.

    • Tempus Fuggit

The black community, which you apparently see as monolithic, “brings its troubles on itself”? And you almost always side with the police officers, even given what’s now available in terms of footage from body cams and such? That completely torpedoes your effort to paint yourself as some kind of enlightened free-speech champion.

Shame on you. That is all.

      • Superman

I also supported the right of the KKK to march in Skokie even though I hate everything they stand for. I am a free speech champion. I just don’t find much merit to the black lives matter movement. Sorry. But we can see 40 people shot on a Saturday night in Chicago, all black on black crime. So black lives don’t seem to matter to black shooters. The cops have a tough job. Doesn’t do any good to put on rose colored glasses. Do you remember those St. Louis riots. Those black neighborhoods are war zones. The cops didn’t make it that way. They have a job to do. Families to go home to.

    • SoCalGal20

How dare black people not want to get murdered by our increasingly militarized, increasingly murderous, systemically racist police forces around the country, and create an organization to PEACEFULLY protest unjust treatment and outright murder. /s

      • Superman

Sorry. We just see things differently. I don’t see the police as the problem. I see the black community as the problem. We depend on the police to keep us safe. Every single night on the news we see a parade of black suspects arrested for the horrible things they’ve done. That’s not the police’s fault. They have a difficult job.

        • SoCalGal20

Oh yes, it couldn’t possibly be because police let white people (I am white btw) get away with all kinds of shit, don’t usually shoot them even when they’re threatening and killing people, yet when black folks can’t even walk down the street without getting harrassed or arrested (and sometimes outright murdered).

Oh, and I SEE you, alright.

  • Tom Furgas

As usual, Mr. Trump is focused on superficial symbols (the flag, the anthem) and not the principles behind them. Not surprising, considering how incredibly unprincipled he is.

    • prixator

To be unprincipled, don’t you have to have principles is the first place?

  • ColoMtnWoman

I’ll boycott Trump. There’s no redeeming social value there anyway. Oh wait… I’m already boycotting Trump. Every time his bloated orange face or whiny voice comes up, I change the channel anyway.

Congratulations, Doofus Maximum! You’ve inspired every other professional and non-professional athlete to kneel or show their own form of protest in every sport across the land. May your tiny little hateful mind be the end of you.

  • Hue-Man

“The NFL always includes both countries’ anthems for London games.”

I find this statement completely ridiculous! What would happen if two NFL teams played in London but only the American anthem were played?

  • Michael White

This is what we have to do to bring down the maladministration. We need to resist and organize to bring out the voters November 2018. He distracts us all with his bullshit while he and the GOP quietly destroy the nations. These outburst distract from the legislation and judicial appointments he is ramming through.

  • GayOldLady

At least 500 NFL players have indicated that they’re going to “Take a Knee” during the anthem at today’s game. I’ll be taking a knee too, but I’ll need help to get up. Good thing my Darlin will be nearby.

Jaguars owner Shahid [“Shad”] Khan, who donated $1 million to President Trump’s inauguration ceremony

    That’s very disappointing.

He came to America at age 16 in 1967 to study
engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; his first job
was washing dishes in a restaurant for $1.20 per hour. Everyone at the very successful manufacturing company he owns speaks very highly of what a great guy he is, cares about his employees, etc.

    • SoCalGal20

I wonder what his reasons for supporting Trump were. Hopefully he now deeply regrets his support and won’t make such a mistake again.

      • Tempus Fuggit

I can only guess it’s because m/billionnaire. Does he deeply regret supporting Trump? I don’t know, care, or forgive.

    • Gianni

Seems he got exactly what he paid for.
