AUSTRALIA: Pizza Shop Trolls Anti-Gay Haters

ABC News Australia reports:

The staff of a Launceston pizza shop have altered the meaning of an anti-same-sex-marriage billboard next to their business, a day after a Hobart hotel distanced itself from a billboard atop its premises. Employees at Wiseguise Pizza, in the suburb of Mowbray, started painting the brick wall adjacent to the “It’s OK to say no” sign, adding the words “to pineapple on pizza”.

Worker Ben Barwick said the shop did not want to take a political stance. “We are painting the side of our building, not on the sign, and basically turning that into a bit of humour,” he said. Wiseguise managing director Alex Jones said he believed the billboard would have had a negative impact on business. Mr Jones said the billboard, which supports a No vote in the Federal Government’s same-sex marriage postal survey, was put up on Thursday morning and was defaced with purple paint by a member of the public a short time later.

For the record, I’m very pro-pineapple on pizza.

  • Rex

Great way to show support and use humor to do it.

    • TominDC

What support? They did it because they thought the billboard would have a negative impact on business. Furthermore:

      – “the shop did not want to take a political stance”
      – “we try not to have a political view as a business”
      – “[the staff] are respectful of everyone’s opinions”
      – “we’re just here to make pizza”

They went to great pains to avoid saying that they’re for marriage equality. This isn’t support; this is them not taking sides.

      • (((GC)))

This could well be them taking sides, while taking pains to avoid looking like they’re taking sides. If they opposed equal marriage, they could easily have left the billboard alone.

        • TominDC

It’s entirely possible that your generous interpretation of their intent is correct. But it’s also possible that they’re against marriage equality, but are smart enough to do this to protect their business.

Put another way: If Prop8 were to happen again today, and a pizza shop near me tried this “we don’t take sides and we respect all opinions” BS? I’d make sure to never spend another penny there again.

      • The sign says it –

  • Archipelagos

I’m going to come out and be totally proud about loving pineapple on my pizza too.

    • Ragnar Lothbrok

My god, WHO are you people ?!

      • Archipelagos

We’re everywhere. A hidden order, secretly pushing the pineapple agenda for eons.

  • Karl Dubhe

Dinner will be a ham and pineapple for me tonite. πŸ™‚

  • DaddyRay

You can tell this was done by progressives because they spelled pineapple correctly

  • JoeMyGod

Ham and pineapple is pretty much my default pizza order.

    • netxtown

I had no idea this was gonna be a coming out kind of day….

    • Natty Enquirer

Salty and sweet has been working for me ever since PB & J.

      • FAEN

Yep salty and sweet is a perfect combination. As is slightly bitter and sweet.

    • DuaneBidoux

Pepperoni or Canadian Bacon can also be good with pineapple.

      • MusicBear88

Or, if you want to be more frou-frou, prosciutto with pineapple.

As a friend of ours would say “ooh, it’s salty, and it makes your c– taste good too!”

      • FAEN

        So can anchovies. Yum.

What is the appropriate attire for such an event?

    • Johannes Stier

I once had two Italien flatmates who would probably want to have a word with you about that…

    • TominDC

I’ve never understood the hate some have for pineapple on pizzas.

I saw them everywhere the last few times I visited southeast Asia, and they’re delicious!

      • romanhans

Pizza is a framework for vegetable and meat consumption, not fruit. Start with pineapple and it’s a slippery slope to watermelon raisin.

        • Ernest Endevor

Next thing you know you’re holding a slice of clafoutis!

          • Hue-Man

Plum clafoutis is my go-to dessert recipe.

          • Ernest Endevor

Feed me cooked plums and I’ll do anything. Also cherries. And peaches.

          • (((GC)))

Had to look that up (thanks for the teachable moment)… Sounds delicious!

          • Ernest Endevor

It is. As Hue-man points out, can be made with plums. Or used as a basis for a fruit tart that isn’t sugary and over-sweet.

        • TominDC

          Too late!

See: tomato sauce and bellpeppers on pizzas.

        • (((GC)))

Pear and gorgonzola pizza is a thing, and not half bad.

        • Gustav2

When will this cultural appropriation stop?

      • bambinoitaliano

I think the sweetness and acidity counter the tomato sauce.

        • Ivan T. Errible

          Isn’t tomato sauce acid?

          • bambinoitaliano

I think its a variation of sweetness and acidity with pineapple laying over tomato sauce that does not sit well with some people. The sweetness of pineapple reduce the savory flavor of the pizza.

          • Ivan T. Errible

            I appreciate the elucidation!

    • Nic Peterson

Quit shoving your Hawaiian pizza down my throat.

      • Rex

Well, then, what can we shove down your throat?

        • Nic Peterson

Thick sausage pizza is a gift from dog.

          • boatboy_srq

Thock sausage is a…. oh, wait….

          • doninkansas

Polish is very good too, as well as firm Spanish chorizo.

      • j.martindale

I’ll have you know that we only have Canadian bacon on our ham and pineapple pizza.

        • Nic Peterson

          Philistine.

        • vorpal 😼

As a Canadian, when first confronted with “Canadian bacon” in the US, I had no idea what they were talking about.

      • David Walker

When I was in my teens, anchovies on pizza was all the rage. I joined in on the craze but then discovered all kinds of other toppings. A few months ago I ordered a slice with anchovies. The young dude gave me an “are you nuts?” look and, in a few minutes, delivered it to the table. I couldn’t finish it. Times and tastes change.

    • FAEN

Now that’s interesting Joe. I didn’t have you pegged as a Hawaiian pizza guy. Enjoy 😊.

Yes…he lived here in London, Ontario and died this year in June.

        • David Walker

And Windex was a cure for anything.

    • bambinoitaliano

As long as its not all dough, I’m pretty good with just about any topping. But sometimes less is more. A simple pepperoni pizza is all I need.

    • Ninja0980

Only mushrooms and pepperoni for me.

    • Ken M

It’s all in the action. Smooth and steady to begin then beat it out at the end.

          • FAEN

Are we talking mayo or sex ?

          • Ernest Endevor

            It’s all good.

          • stuckinthewoods

yeah, I don’t understand why people act like making mayo is a big deal. With a food processor, zap-zarap, and it’s done.
Since your comment seems to be the only pro-anchovy one (I doubt my Italian relatives would have understood pineapple on pizza) perhaps this pasta recipe will be to your liking. They called it pasta “con allege” (that’s probably in dialect). While the pasta water is boiling, heat minced garlic and some red pepper flakes in olive oil, then add canned (or nicer) anchovies, which will totally break apart. Add some butter. Pour onto pasta (parsley helps the look), and we add some parmesan (but I don’t think Italians pair cheese and fish).
Someone recently solicited her friends’ fastest dinner recipes and I supplied this one. Her look of incomprehension was about like mine to pineapple on pizza.

          • FAEN

Your Italian relatives and I would get along. I’ve been eating that dish for a few years now. I saw a chef prepare it on some show or the other and made it for dinner that night and now it’s one of my staples. Easy to make and so so delicious! Interestingly the Italian chef who made it DID use some Parmesan at the end which is what I do as well.

Thanks for the recipe as it were. I’m always open if you want to pitch a few others my way 😊.

          • This sounds great! Minus the parmesan. I’l have to make this soon. It’s sorta like Puttanesca, which I adore.

          • stuckinthewoods

I hope you find it useful. Quick like puttanesca, and since we use canned anchovies, all the stuff is usually on the shelf. Two nights ago when neither of us wanted to cook, the husband suggested this and it was done pronto. Sounded like Mom said “spaghetti con aleege”. Now that I google, it’s actually “con alici” and some recipes I just looked at add breadcrumbs for crunch….after nearly 70 years I just learned something.

          • Ok, the breadcrumb addition sounds absolutely scrumptious! This just might be dinner tomorrow night, I need to buy up some anchovies!

  • Comixbear

People who like pineapple on pizza are just fine….Some of my best friends like pineapple on pizza.
But why do they have to flaunt it???

  • (((GC)))

Say you’re a plain cheese guy, and you meet someone at the pizza place whose favorite topping is pineapple, M&M’s and spam. You might think it’s a little peculiar, but that’s it. Imagine how cool it would be if that’s how everyone perceived our kinks or other sexual preferences? No one thinks someone who likes ketchup on their pizza is going to burn eternally in hell.

People have varying appetites for pizza. Some people are happy with a single slice once or twice a year, and others eat a whole pizza for breakfast every day. And that’s okay! …some people don’t like pizza at all. That same understanding should be applied to sex.

And we don’t give guys crap for walking past a pizza shop without going in to eat…

There’s plenty more from Carly Dreyfus, talking about the many problems with the “first base”, “scoring”, etc. baseball metaphor for sex, as explained by Deborah Roffman, and Al Vernacchio’s inclusive and delicious alternative metaphor, pizza:

          LOL-ok. All your pal.

      • TuuxKabin

Eggplant & garlic, easy on the cheese, crispy crust and never deep fish. Bottle of Sangiovese.

        • FAEN

          Eggplant-DELICIOUS!

          • TuuxKabin

            Ya’ know!?!!?!

          • FAEN

            Damn skippy!

        • (((GC)))

Deep fish would be rather weird on pizza…

          • TuuxKabin

Je, je glad someone caught that. Thank you. Speaking of fish, tho, we added filet of bass to a clam chowder, New England, last night. It got our ‘product endorsement.’ Going for shallow fish pizza for lunch today. Thanks for the idea.

          • (((GC)))

Grilled salmon might not be bad! (After all, if barbecue chicken pizza and lamb pizza work…)

  • bambinoitaliano

I guess a lot of us are having pizza for either lunch or dinner today.

  • bambinoitaliano
    • I’ve heard of drum solos, and guitar solos, but a maracas solo?

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

Liza wasn’t really very discerning, was she?

  • Gigi

It’s so sad what’s going on in Australia. The haters are out in full force, spreading lies and misinformation about the LGBT community in an effort to deny them marriage equality. I’ll be glad when it’s all over.

    • (((GC)))

And it’s not even a binding referendum… Parliament can ignore the result if they don’t like it.

      • Friday

The upside of that is that if the haters get their way in the ratfucked postal vote full of hate-speech, violence, and lies, it’s not the ‘political cover’ the Christianists in their government and wafflers hoped for.

  • SFHarry

    …but yes to double sausage!!!

  • kelven

As a vegetarian, one of my favorite pizzas is simply pineapple and onion.

    • Joe in PA

You dine alone I take it. πŸ˜‰

Teasing. The ‘sounds’ weird, I guess don’t knock it till you try it? πŸ™‚

      • Natty Enquirer

The Tibetan bowl is a nice touch.

    • Karl Dubhe

When I was in the UK I tried a pizza that had corn and green peppers.

It was excellent. πŸ™‚ But they also had Hawaiian.

  • Ken M

OK..Call me stereotypical, but what do yo think of when you hear Tasmania? Hobart is in Tasmania. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ed0Hg7stjHE

    • TuuxKabin

Can’t help but go there myself. Love it.

  • The_Wretched

My fav pizza is anchovy, pineapple and black olive.

  • netxtown

    True pizza story:

Picture this: Navy A-school, Memphis. Had finally got our first paychecks – so I and a Navy bud headed for a local pizza joint. The girl asked us what we wanted on it – and we told her everything! She asked, “anchovies?” We said, everything!

About 3 or 4 minutes later we hear a commotion coming from the kitchen as two workers get into it as to who isn’t gonna be sticking there hand in a jar. We paid it no mind. A short time later, our pizza comes out all steaming hot and looking like a piece of art!

We each slid a piece to our plates – and pretty much simultaneously munched down! And then….we just kind of put it down…paid or tab and made for the door. That was the nastiest pizza I had ever stuck in my mouth. Only later did we find out what anchovies really were…. Ah! that sweet ignorance of youth!

And to this very day – I have never had ‘anchovy’ again. YUK!

    • Anchovys seem to be something you have to grow up eating to enjoy. I get so excited when I see anchovys on a pizza menu, only to find out they no longer carry them!! Gahhhhh!

      • jerry

I actually like anchovies, just not very often on pizza, because the taste overwhelms the pizza itself. Sort of like using extremely hot peppers in a dish…all you end up tasting is the peppers.

    • Treant

I like the small amount in Caesar salad dressing. But any more than that, no.

    • TuuxKabin

They’re just filet garden worms, aren’t they?

    • stuckinthewoods

Funny. I grew up with anchovies so they don’t seem odd to me. Umami. In all of these pineapple, etc. opinions, I use my gay outlook: “you can love something someone else finds disgusting, or vice versa….and not be wrong.”

    • kanehau

One time, this obnoxious person I knew said to me “Know how to get half a pizza for yourself? Just order 1/2 with anchovies and nobody else will touch it”.

I replied “Know how to get a WHOLE pizza for yourself? Order it with no cheese and nobody will touch it.”

I’m lactose intolerant, so no cheese… but unfortunately it turns out that cheese-less pizzas (loaded with tons of other goodies) are just damn fucking delicious.

Everyone always says “oh, that looks delicious, can I try a slice”.

      So… don’t take my advice… it doesn’t work.

      • (((GC)))

Cheeseless “cheesesteaks” or chicken steaks are also delicious! Especially when loaded up with shroomy goodness. (Ducking as a mob of irate Philadelphians come after me for heresy…)

  • Mikey

Pineapple goes in a pina colada… not on a pizza.
    There, I said it.

And I agree whole-heartedly with the pizza employees.

  • BearEyes

Love the addition to the sign
    Tried pineapple on pizza once
    Never again!
    Gross, vile, and disgusting
    Sausage and mushrooms please
    Anchovies are welcome too

    • Thank you! No pineapple on my pizzas! Nor broccoli, bbq sauce, ranch, egg or corn.

      • BearEyes

        Good choice

    • TuuxKabin

Eggplant & garlic, crispy critters! Anchovies from time to time. And half s bottle of good dago red per person.

      • Love eggplant, its an under utilized veggie in the US.

  • Dean

    QUATTRO FORMAGGIO!!! that is all.

    • (((GC)))

      Quattro stagioni gets my vote!

  • jmax

Speaking of pineapple – my father’s second wife used to make a casserole every Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was pineapple chunks in melted Velveeta cheese with a crumbly topping. I had never seen it before and thought it was the most disgusting pile of glop ever.

    • Mike_in_the_Tundra

It sounds like a pile of glop, but pineapple on pizza is great.

    • stuckinthewoods

      Was second wife Southern?

      • jmax

Yes, from Kentucky. Is that a Southern thing? I know it was completely foreign to a kid raised on his Panamanian mother’s cooking.

        • stuckinthewoods

It might. The other day a friend, the South Carolinian mother of our Goddess, asked did I remember her “signature” pineapple side dish. I think I’d blocked it out. After your comment I looked and saw several with pineapple, cheddar, crackers on top…some started with roux.

          • jmax

I looked them up too. None of them sounded good to me : )

          • stuckinthewoods

no, but you made me look up Panamanian food… and that sounded good to me.

          • jmax

I miss my mom’s cooking every day.

    • Harley

Sounds like something from the Ellie Mae Clampett School of Cooking.

      • jmax

To go along with her rubber biscuits.

    • Spongebob CrankyPants

I make a casserole with lime jello, pineapple chunks, velvetta (not melted) and cool whip. Almost everyone looks at it in disgust, but comes back for seconds after trying it.

      • jmax

Sounds nasty. But I’ll try anything once.

    • Oh My God The Horror!!!! I can not even imagine.

    • jerry

You’re lucky, my stepmother does the green bean casserole recipe from the back of a can of cream of mushroom soup.

      • jmax

My partner makes that for his family’s gatherings. Another thing my mother never made.

      • William

That casserole is a sacred tradition in my family.

  • Ken M

  • Dean

DR. Oetker here in Germany now make a chocolate pizza.

    • William

      That’s an abomination.

    • (((GC)))

That sounds good! I’ve enjoyed dessert pizzas, cheeseless and tomatoless with fruit toppings.

    • (((GC)))

Marmite tastes great! (A little goes a long way.) Haven’t had the chance to try Vegemite yet….

      • William

I like Vegemite and will eat Marmite in England. Something happens to the Marmite sent to the US.

        • (((GC)))

Guess I need to try the British stuff… I acquired a small case of Marmite here in the States, from someone who obviously didn’t appreciate it… tasted fine to me.

          • William

I swear there is a difference between Marmite in the US and Marmite in Britain.

  • JWC

    Just pass the damnned bill

  • Rillion

“For the record, I’m very pro-pineapple on pizza.”

    Monster!

    • BockMcMillan

I agree that was a truly shocking statement by Joe. As we all should know the sweet, soggy and heated pineapple spoils the crunchiness of any pizza

  • Friday

Eh, I’m pretty pro-choice on Hawaiian pizza. It’s not what I ever want but it’s OK.

  • Robin Prins

This could well be them taking sides, while taking pains to avoid looking like they’re taking sides. If they opposed equal marriage, they could easily have left the billboard alone.

  • Jean-Marc in Canada

    Clever

  • Kenster999

My favorite is pineapple + pepperoni. The mix of savory and sweet is fantastic!

    • Gianni

      That sounds good.

  • JCF

“For the record, I’m very pro-pineapple on pizza.”

    That’s a crime against God & Nature! :-0

j/k. I’m not crazy about “Hawaian Pizza”, but it’s OK once in a while (as part of a larger pizza selection! Think buffet)

  • Rrhain

No fish, no fruit, no weird.
