AUSTRALIA: Former PM Tony Abbott Claims He Was Assaulted By Supporter Of Same-Sex Marriage [VIDEO]

The Sydney Morning Herald reports:

Former prime minister Tony Abbott says he was a victim of “politically motivated violence” after he was assaulted by a same-sex marriage campaigner in Hobart. Mr. Abbott said he was headbutted by a same-sex marriage campaigner in a Hobart street on Thursday who told him: ‘You deserve it because of all the things you’ve said.’

Mr. Abbott told 2GB he was walking back to his hotel following a meeting with a newspaper editor when he was beckoned by a man in the street. “A fellow sung out at me ‘Hey, Tony’, I turned around, there was a chap wearing a vote ‘Yes’ badge,” he said.

“He says ‘I want to shake your hand’. I went over to shake his hand and he headbutted me.” A boxer during his university days, Mr Abbott was critical of the man’s head butt: “He wasn’t very good at it, I’ve got to say. But he did make contact. The only damage was a very, very slightly swollen lip.”

More from The Guardian:

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull called Abbott as soon as he heard about the incident and left a voicemail, according to a spokesman. He also called Andrew Colvin, the commissioner of the Australian Federal Police.

Abbott told the story to Steve Price and Sky News host Andrew Bolt on Melbourne’s 3AW radio on Thursday. Price said Abbott was lucky to have a witness to the assault because some yes campaigners would accuse him of making the story up if he didn’t. “Oh without a doubt,” Bolt said.

Alex Greenwich MP, the co-chair of The Equality Campaign, has condemned the attack. “There is absolutely no place for violence in the marriage equality debate. This is about treating people fairly and with respect & dignity,” he said on Twitter.

RELATED: Earlier this year the US-based hate group Alliance Defending Freedom flew Abbott to New York City where he delivered a speech against same-sex marriage.

    Alternately, fuck him.

NEVER could St. Judy be overused! 🙂

    • Jeffrey

Not possible. And of course I hear it in her distinctive voice.

    • Nope.

    • Ernest Endevor

Why can’t Judy be queen of everything?

    • Todd20036

I think Judy likes to be used.

    • DonnaLee

Nobody can say it quite like Judy.

  • another_steve

    Not good.

This type of thing will lose the marriage equality side some votes.

    • Ninja0980

      If it even happened.

      • gaycuckhubby

Unfortunately even if it didn’t happen it could cost some votes

    • vorpal 😼

He knows that, and that’s why he claimed it happened.
I’m sure his “very, very slightly swollen lip” will provide all the evidence needed.

  • bkmn

Pictures, or it didn’t happen. I smell lies.

  • gaycuckhubby

Such a f***** up cycle. They treat an oppressed minority group in a discriminatory manner then when one member snaps and fights back they say “see this proves they shouldn’t be equal”

  • TampaZeke

The man doesn’t go anywhere where people aren’t video taping him yet there is no video of this alleged attack? We all know how willing homophobes are to lie in their campaigns against us. Abbott already has a long history of lying through his teeth. The man’s full of shit and he should be called out on it. He’s going to get exactly what he planned to get when he made up this lie and everyone, including our side, is making sure of it.

    • Randy Left Brooklyn

But he has a witness, one of his paid staff members, who he would not even consider conspiring with upfront to concoct a story like this. No,Tony Abbott is the 100% victim here, as always.

    • kareemachan

      “Very slightly swollen lip”

      Yup, that’s totes believable.

    • DonnaLee

Totally pictures or it didn’t happen. He’s shown himself to be a lying sack of shit who will whine and cry at the slightest provocation.

  • Tawreos

Assault or did a drunk stumble into him?

    • vorpal 😼

He probably drunkenly stumbled into a VOTE YES sign and his tiny anti-LGBT brain got confused. Happens all the time.

What types of games do you enjoy, Bj Lincoln?

  • olandp

Exactly what is a, “…very, very slightly swelled lip”?

    • vorpal 😼

It’s similar to a very, very slightly stubbed toe and a very, very slightly bruised ego.

      • olandp

Is that like a little bit pregnant?

    • gaycuckhubby

It means “don’t look for physical evidence. just trust me”

It’s like an ambiguous bone spur.

  • barrixines

Abbot’s about as popular as Ted Cruz. There’s probably six or seven million people in Oz about to step forward to claim responsibility for lamping him one.

  • Nic Peterson

The assailant then drew a B on his face but backwards just for authenticity.

  • Bluto
  • Ninja0980

Given all the lies he’s told already, why should we believe anything this bigot says?

  • vorpal 😼

Funny that these anti-LGBT people always claim that there is so much violence and so many death threats against them… but they never seem to contact the police about it.

    • And have they no cameras on their phone?

    • David Walker

Helen xx pointed out something that I lived quite literally for the better part of my life. Jack and I were together for 37 years and I would defy anyone to prove that we were not in love, that we were not committed to each other until death did us part, that we did not cherish each other, that we did not go through sickness and health, richer or poorer, through good times and bum times. We didn’t marry after it became legal, but that was a Social Security issue. He was the most vital part of my life for just shy of 38 years and I miss him terribly. Other JMGers have been together longer than 37 years and I’m sure they would say the same thing. We could have parted…and without divorce…at any time, but that’s not what commitment is. A relationship takes work, and if the work it takes no longer feels worth it, then it’s time to go. We always did the work and always wound up stronger and closer for it. Thank you, Helen xx, for understanding that, and thank you bambinoitaliano and Rob for sharing this.

    • Bj Lincoln

This is what I posted with your letter on FB.
“The wife and I have friends in Australia. She plays VR poker with them almost every day. I have been following the issue for years. While Tony Abbott deserves a better head butt and more for the horrible things he has said about LGBT people, I do not condone violence. I know the awful lies being told about us over equal marriage there because they are the same BS told here. While I hope the Yes vote wins, it means nothing until the government votes. This is just a survey to see how the citizens feel and not a real vote on the matter.
Voting on people’s civil rights is wrong. How would they like it if we voted on their marriages?”

  • Rex

In some cultures, a headbutt is an invitation for sex.
Or is that a face in your butt, either way, both work.

  • worstcultever

I just don’t get the crazy in Australia. I mean, wtf. This just all seems like an orgy of the $$/religio/rightwing media industrial complex.

I mean, their commonwealth sister Canada (e.g.) has had SSM for how long now? And not ONE SINGLE horrible or even noticeable bad effect on society whatsoever. And how many other countries too. Yet this fucking nonsense – absolute ridiculous bullshit – somehow still has traction? I can only chalk it up to the usual religiou$ money racket and the need of the usual passive idiots to be entertained/energized by reality tv/pointless conflict.

  • Uncle Mark

    Can a butt-head get a head-butt?

  • BeaverTales

I hope it isn’t true, because personal violence is always wrong against individual elected politicians doing their jobs peaceably, but I am wondering why people don’t do whipped cream pies if they feel they need to go to jail for assault?

  • Ben in Oakland

Well, there you have it. Allow gay marriage and every former prime minister will be head butted on the street. Homosexuals will roam every city, decorating your apartment against your will, and forcing you to have brunch.

    • gaycuckhubby

No! no more mimosas, this is torture

      • worstcultever

OT. President Pence as a result of Kremlingate…re-think that, maybe?

        Sure hope so!

        • Todd20036

The plan is to re-take the House in 2018, tear through the Trump administration and install President Pelosi.

  • bambinoitaliano

I think punching a bigot should be added to the list along with Nazi and douchbag.

  • JoeMyGod

Earlier this year the gay CEO of Qantas Airlines had a cream pie smashed in his face by a Christian activist after the airline backed same-sex marriage.

  • Phil2u

I hope he has “hard evidence.” Seriously, “we” must keep cool heads during any such interaction… negativity will not serve us well.

  • Yixing’s Fluffer

Who would want to make contact with the Mad Abbott?

  • Ernest Endevor

“There is absolutely no place for violence in the marriage equality debate.” Apart from the violence of putting LGBT men and women through this public charade.

  • Gerry Fisher

My heart bleeds. Now you know a little bit how it feels like to have others vote on your marriage.

  • This is a non-binding resolution. The result will have zero impact on the law. So why are the bigots so freaked out? Because it might show that a majority of Australians aren’t bigots and make some elected officials stop voting to pander to the bigoted minority. That’s what they are afraid of.

Also, I call bullshit on the assault. Nothing happens to famous people out in public these days without someone getting video. Didn’t happen.

  • billbear1961

And the young man–the godson of a former PM–who was struck in the face by a hater, leaving a bloody cut, when he objected to a rainbow flag being taken down?

  • billbear1961

So, one act of violence, by someone who could be an agent provocateur, and an entire group must be deprived of the right to marry?

  • FAEN

Dear Tony-Have any idea how many anti equality supporters have beaten us up, called us faggot, killed us, continue to kill us and tried their best to legally discriminate against us-FYI, a LOT more than have ever attacked you. EVER!

    • Tawreos

Of course they won’t consider that. They think it is rational that our insistence on existing is an assault on all they hold dear

    • Ninja0980

But if we dare to point that out, we’re intolerant bigots.

  • shellback

If it happened, which I seriously doubt, you should consider yourself lucky you weren’t thrown from a roof or tied to a fence and left to die.

  • Uncle Mark

….And how many gay people are accosted on the street just for being gay? This guy’s assholishness is by choice…although I’d rather suspect a kick to the pants is more likely to jostle his mind than any strike to the head.

  • TampaDink

    Sure Jan.

  • Jefe5084

  • The_Wretched

Eh. ADF types aren’t above making things up. I’m going to go with ‘needs evidence’.

  • LatrinaDiBucca

    A witness? Were charges filed?

    This report lacks fundamental authentication.

At this point, one could just as easily assume that this was a cottaging incident gone awry, and that Abbott is crying wolf for cover.

    • Ben in Oakland

      points for “cottaging”.

  • MBear

These people are so afraid of violence. They forget about the LIFETIMES of violence against LGBT people which includes the oppression by government systems that they enforce daily, repeatedly, and without any sense of morality or justice.

  • VodkaAndPolitics

So you mean to tell me that the recent prime minister has no security detail what-so-ever, there were no witnesses, and the police weren’t called…. Yeah, okay.

    • Reality.Bites

Former PMs don’t get security in Canada. I doubt they do in Oz either

  • Michael

Wow, can you say “full of shit”??? He’s a boxer, has some guy assault him but does NOTHING about it??? Let’s see, uh, he’s against same sex marriage so what better why to get more ‘no’ votes by either attacking the attacker or having him arrested?

  • Mike C

Seen it all before. Did these guys buy the “Oppose Gay Marriage Deluxe Package” from Brian Brown for $19.95 or something?

  • 2guysnamedjoe

I’m a firm believer in civil discourse.
Having said that, I hope it hurt.

  • zhera

Physical violence is absolutely unacceptable. So is psychological violence. Will Abbott speak up for all those children, teenagers, and adults who are now suffering because of the daily abuse they’re subjected to from HIS side?

    I’m not holding my breath.

  • stanhope

The little prissy bitch doesn’t consider the real violence against lbgtbq people. If the bitch could walk, then he wasn’t hit hard enough

  • JAKvirginia

Very, very slightly swollen lip? I got that once after a pleasant evening snogging with a grizzly-bearded bear. (Heaven!) Hope Tony’s lip gloss wasn’t smeared. Poor baby. To think, if you show hatred to people they just might give it back. What is the world coming to? Yes… being snarky.

I’m not condoning violence, it’s wrong to hit people just because they deserve it, but it is accurate to say he deserves it.
