BRAZIL: Court Overturns Ex-Gay Torture Ban, Rules For Christian Activist Who Calls Homosexuality A “Disease”

The Guardian reports:

A Brazilian judge has approved gay “conversion therapy” in a ruling which prompted widespread outrage and raised fears of a conservative backlash. Waldemar de Carvalho, a federal judge in the capital of Brasília, overruled a 1999 decision by the Federal Council of Psychology that forbade psychologists from offering widely discredited treatments which claims to “cure” gay people.

Coming a week after a bank cancelled an exhibition of gay art after protests from right wing and evangelical Christian groups, the ruling has raised fears that progressive policies could be overturned. Brazil has a growing population of evangelical Christians who have protested vociferously at plot lines in television soap operas featuring gay or transgender characters, and increasingly ally themselves with burgeoning right wing groups.

Judge de Carvalho ruled in favour of an action brought by Rozangela Justino [PHOTO], an evangelical Christian and psychologist whose license was revoked in 2016 after she offered “conversion therapy”. In a 2009 interview with the Folha de S Paulo newspaper, Justino said she saw homosexuality as a “disease”, advised patients to seek religious guidance and said: “I feel directed by God to help people who are homosexual.” She did not respond to a request to comment.

Why does it feel like one step forward, two steps back these days?

    • Tatonka

Because that’s reality, and in some respects worse than that.

    • TampaZeke

It’s been that way most days throughout history; except for the days that it was one step back, two steps back.

    • RaygunsGoZap

      Death throes?

      • Tatonka

I would love to believe that. But I don’t.

        • j.martindale

Yeah, they keep procreating in their own image and likeness. And home school.

  • From Ms. Justino:
“The pro-homosexual movement has made alliances with psychology councils and wants to implant the gay dictatorship in the country.”

      Sounds like our Nazis.

When your reasoning is based on what I would essentially call cult material, it doesn’t take long for you public rationale to start sounding crazy.

    • Natty Enquirer

Comply or meet your meteorological doom.

  • Todd20036

It’s all about hating on LBGTs. There is no logical reason for this. None.

    • j.martindale

Religion and reason are like oil and water. They do not mix.

    • Natty Enquirer

I call it heterosexism: the belief that you, alone, have discovered Nature’s secret of the sexes and that others must obey or die.

      • Steverino

Heterosexual supremacy describes it as well.

  • Sam_Handwich

: “I feel directed by God to help people who are homosexual.”

    Good. Clean my fuckin bathroom.

    • Christopher

She could lick the toilet bowl clean.

      That’s all she’s good for.

And this coffe isn’t terribly caliente.

This christian hag has been around for years trying every court she could find, until she finally got a judge to go against every brazilian medical/psichological authority and give her this hateful ruling. The extreme right wing forces in Brazil are trying to turn the clock back to the 18th century, but I really hope they won´t get anywhere far. This stupid ruling will be overuled soon.

    • Stogiebear

The judges who hear the appeal should subject her to conversion torture in court so they all see first-hand how much she approves of it. Might as well start with the electroshock and follow it up with the nausea-inducing medications (repeat ad mortum).

  • Tawreos

For people that love to talk about love, they do an awful lot of hating.

    • Frostbite

it pays better. no one needs your sham “therapy” if they love themselves for who they are.

Speaking of crazy Christians. The trailer for the Hannity film is comedy gold. It’s really horrible.Hits every ridiculous Atheists are bad bullshit.

she’s got it assbackward. christianity is the dis-ease.

  • Michael

It’s odd because starting yesterday or the day before a bunch of my Brazilian DJ friends were changing their Facebook avatars to the gay pride shade colors. Took me a minute to figure out WTF was going on. Good for them though.

  • Natty Enquirer

    Religion is a choice, hon.

    • prixator

And a very poor one, too.

  • Treant

So they have scientific proof of that? Really? Citation required.

Also, if Fernando requires amnesty, I’m willing to put out. I mean…put him up.

Respectful note to Joe: Not all of us are bilingual. Many of us don’t have the time to run the information through Google Translate. The pictures are interesting though.

  • Tatonka

Are we just not going to talk about the fact she’s got a face like a near-sighted potato pancake? I’m aware that this makes me a small, petty person, and I accept that.

  • Ken M

It’s still legal here, as long as the person requesting it is 18+. Is the “child protection” what the court overturned, or was it the use of the method at all? BTW, my Spanish sucks. Would someone mind translating the tweets? Thanks.

    • Treant

      Isn’t that Portuguese?

Regardless, I can just barely bull my way through using my very bad Spanish, but I think the lady at the bottom is advertising gay sex lube…

      • Ken M

LOL…ok My Portuguese is even worse if that’s what it is. Lube huh? I like your very bad Spanish. : )

        • barrixines

          She’s saying –

“We don’t need a gay cure. We need love and respect.”

          The guy with the beard-

“I’m LGBT ‍ Yes and with pride. We don’t need any cure. We need love, because that’s what’s missing.”

    • barrixines

The nice lady at the bottom is saying we don’t need a gay cure and help, my head is stuck in a windsock again

  • BeaverTales

Will Brazil legalize other snake oil treatments like bloodletting, lobotomies, trepanation, and other pseudoscience? They are as equally effective as these ex-gay therapies. A child should not be forced into this.

    • Treant

It’s weird, but one of Mom’s friends requires occasional bloodletting; it’s an uncommon genetic disease among German descendants around here that causes you to retain iron. Eventually, you’ll have a stroke and your kidneys aren’t happy, either. So they pull a pint every six weeks and throw it away, and you avoid all iron sources.

      • Dave F.

Ex friend of mine (he said he’d have voted for Trump if he had voted) has that condition. He goes to the local VA hospital once a month and they take a pint. He’s also on blood thinners for the rest of his life. Let’s see what happens if the SHPOS GOP takes away his benefits and he has to pay for his treatments. Can’t feel sorry when karma bites him on the ass.

      • Regan DuCasse

They don’t donate it? Or is there something about that disease that makes their blood dangerous to a recipient as well?

        • Treant

It can’t be donated. I’m not sure why. While he does allow them to use it for research if they want, he’s said they probably just discard it as medical waste and burn it.

  • Lumpy Gaga

So why can’t I get Tarot Card readings from my local gypsy voodoo priestess reimbursed??

  • edrex

goddamned evangelicals have really shitted up this planet.

  • barrixines

FYI Elza Soares is the “Brazilian Tina Turner”. She’s eighty, and an advocate for women, black and LGBT people. Obviously she’s completely magnificent.

  • M Jackson

Threre’s so much shitty stuff already today, I’m glad I can’t read portugese.

  • greenmanTN

Funny how she claims to be such a strict Biblical literalist yet somehow managed to miss the parts of the Bible that say women can’t preach or be in a position of power over men.

    Funny, that.

The Bible: All for me yet none for thee.

  • Gerry Fisher

I don’t understand how courts can order professional organizations to license or not license their people. I’d need to know more about the Brazilian constitution, I guess. For example, I don’t understand why she can’t do this as a religious retreat or workshop or something.

  • JWC

We all now take one giant step backward

  • vorpal 😼

Once again, apparently being a heterosexual Evangelical Christian makes you an expert on sexual orientation, just like being a man makes you an expert on abortion and women’s rights.

    • orion dumptee

in SC and NC…being an evangelical xtian makes you an EXPERT on EVERYTHING….(,jus ask em )… boy am i happy i moved back north, where Im pleased to report there are MANY folks here with more than a 3rd grade edu

  • Halou

She failed to uphold the standards of her profession so she had her license revoked as a result, what part of that does she have a hard time understanding?

  • Halou

“I feel directed by God to help people who are homosexual.”
She can take my direction and shove that bible of hers up her own arse.

  • Paula

All I’m saying is this Brazil. People disappear all the time.

    • Halou

Brazil is the worst country in the world when it comes to LGBT homicide, particularly when it comes to transgender people both in terms of sheer numbers (which may otherwise be due to the large number of people living in Brazil), but also as a ratio of the nation’s transgender population.

  • Mike

New Rule: No more hugs and kisses for that nice pope until he reforms his toxic church and puts an and to its inhumanity.

  • Regan DuCasse

Can a straight ally weigh in on this?
I have marveled at human diversity. I love so much about our planet.
And because I love science, and the immense achievement…I’m gobsmacked at the stupid assed priorities people like this court and evangelical Christians engage in.
What there REALLY needs to be, is a cure for cancer. And debilitating clinical mental illnesses like BPD and schizophrenia.
Sociopaths are a serious menace to most people and their frequency of existence is one in 25, and many have become dictators of major gov’ts.
A cure for this level of stupid, even better.
I know it’s not easy being gay in such a climate as we see everywhere.
It’s not easy being a woman. Or a black woman, which is what I am.
The people that want us to hate what we are, just mind fuck us into it.
I don’t want everyone to be heterosexual, or pass for it, or fake it.
Life would be beige, boring and…clearly that is NOT what God intended.
What matters, is that regardless of our sexual orientation, it’s being smart, kind, inventive, creative…compassionate, brave…THAT is what we need to look for, and enhance and support in each of us.
It’s bad enough how so many cultures and people have decided that certain groups have none of that, to the detriment of all humanity.
