OKLAHOMA: Two Coworkers Knew About Child Porn On Computer Of Former Trump State Campaign Chair

The Associated Press reports:

At least two people knew about child pornography on former Republican state Sen. Ralph Shortey’s computer at the Oklahoma Capitol, but failed to disclose that information to authorities until years later after police reportedly found Shortey in a motel room with a 17-year-old boy, according to newly released court records.

The application for a search warrant unsealed last week in U.S. District Court in Oklahoma City shows a worker on Shortey’s campaign three years ago “inadvertently observed child pornography contained in a folder on Shortey’s computer in the Capitol building.” The campaign aide reported that finding to an individual who didn’t come forward until it was revealed that Shortey was under investigation for an incident with the teenager in a motel room in the Oklahoma City suburb of Moore.

Neither person was identified in the application, which was used to obtain a warrant to search Shortey’s computer and office at the state Capitol. Court documents show the FBI seized a CD-ROM and a memory card from Shortey’s office. It’s not clear whether either the campaign aide or the person the aide told could face criminal charges.

Last week the FBI released more details about Shortey’s Craigslist ads.

On March 28, 2017, Moore Police provided the FBI with additional Craigslist ads obtained pursuant to the search warrant issued by the District Court of Cleveland County, Oklahoma. Shortey was attempting to solicit young males for sexual contact. Several of the ads were posted during the six-month period when [REDACTED] was in a rehabilitation facility.

One of those ads said Shorty (sic) was looking for 5-10 men under the age of 40 and that he was “offering this young tight twink” for a “straight or bi gang bang.” The post explains that the person he was offering “is 21 (looks 18)” and has “an amazing boy pussy.”

He described the “boy” to be small and fit, “an amazing cock sucker and even better at getting fucked,” and explained that he was “trying to get 5-10, he can last and everyone will have their turn (or multiple turns). . . . My kik name is brinokc4u.” Law enforcement has not identified that person.

Shortey has pleaded not to guilty to multiple child porn and child sex trafficking charges. He faces up to life in prison.

Do not report this kind of crap to a supervisor or anyone else within the organization that may or may not be involved – contact police directly. Do not mess with the child molesters, report them

    • clay

For some people, if they want to keep their job, they need to ALSO report it to their supervisor. Better employers require that it go directly to HR or to the reported individual’s supervisor, or both. in this situation, reporting it to the supervisor was idiocy, since that supervisor was supervised by Shortey.

In the US, in the last 20 years, there’s been only one major employer I know of that’s said report it to the supervisor before/instead of the police. I think we can all guess which non-profit has taken that stance, while lobbying to maintain short statutes of limitation for child abuse and child abuse cover-up.

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

This is why these crimes are hard to ferret out. People always prize the freedom and convenience of their criminal friends over innocent people. It’s the same in churches, companies and capitols.

Also, stop reporting to our supervisor or just your supervisor. Call 911, you dumb selfish assholes. You have no excuse.

    • RaygunsGoZap

I KNOW! Who are these moral wimps. You immediately contact authorities. And then, maybe you alert your supervisor or maybe you let the police showing up be how they find out.

      • Todd20036

Aside from it being kiddie porn, on your WORK computer?
        Really?
In addition to being that perverse and morally corrupt, to actually be that stupid?
Unless, subconsciously you want to get caught….

        • RaygunsGoZap

          Spank me!

        • jmax

I have a friend who spent two and a half years in prison for possessing child pornography on his computer at work. He was an elementary school teacher. If that isn’t stupid, I don’t know what is.

Before jumping to conclusions, note that this guy talks about sex with boys, and then sometimes writes they are 18 but look younger. The boy/prostitute he is charged with accosting was 17. If the “child porn” the co-workers purportedly saw had 17 or 18 year olds pictured, would you have them calling the authorities? I am always suspicious in cases when authorities make a big deal about child molestation when talking about 17-year-olds. No, adults need to avoid screwing with kids, but 17 versus 18 is not always apparent.

  • Blake Jordan

That sort of thing (ignoring the harm of others, particularly children) should be a crime, if it is not one already!!!

  • lymis

“One of those ads said Shorty (sic) was looking for 5-10 men under the age of 40 and that he was “offering this young tight twink” for a “straight or bi gang bang.” The post explains that the person he was offering “is 21 (looks 18)” and has “an amazing boy pussy.”

That’s crappy. And certainly inappropriate for a workplace computer, much less a government one.

But how is this in any way related to child porn?

    • WitlessProtection

The same way Monica Lewinsky was related to Whitewater…

    • leo77

That was my reaction. Yes it’s creepy and it certainly doesn’t belong on any work computer, but strictly speaking there’s nothing criminal about it as long as what was being proposed was consensual.

    • Tawreos

They believe there was child porn on his government computer. I don’t believe the craigslist ads are related to his work computer, necessarily. There are different parts covering two different subjects. At least that is how I am reading it.

    • leo77

Ah I get it now. According to Oklahoma consent law if a minor under the age of 18 is in custodial care of a government run agency then it’s illegal for a government employee to have sex with them even if it’s consensual. That’s the law Shorty ran afoul of. The 17 year old “was in a rehabilitation facility”.

      • Todd20036

I think the age of consent in certain jurisdictions can be as low as 16.
My problem is if a 17 year old has sex with an 18 year old.
The 18 year old could go to jail for a long time, even if the age difference between the two is a day

  • gaycuckhubby

Only thing the article didn’t make clear… were the coworkers aware at the time that they had seen child porn? Or was it “barely legal” kind of porn that they didnt think about until he got arrested.
It seemed he was into older teens.
I’m not ready to condemn the coworkers. Yet.

    • Robert K Wright

It’s pretty clear in the article, as an aide saw child porn on his computer and reported the child porn to another individual who did nothing. Doesn’t say they saw “barely legal” porn. And again, one person thought enough about it that they reported it. And they sure were quick to come forward AFTER he got caught. Probably because they knew that this incident would come out in the investigation.

      • gaycuckhubby

I mean… if saw any porn on a coworkers work computer I might mention it to a supervisor. But it doesnt mean they knew it was underage.
If they did, then they should be charged

  • crewman

The person he was arrested for having sex with was 17. Coworkers found child porn — was that of boys that looked around that age, or were they more like 10, or more like 5? I don’t know if the law looks differently at 5 vs 17, but it seems very different to me. I don’t think 17 is right for someone that much either, but 5 or 10 is severely wrong. I could see coworkers not knowing or reporting porn if the subjects were in the 17/18 age.

    • clay

The child porn reportedly included prepubescent girls, as well.
Even the Duck Dienasty dudes have a problem with that.

    • j.martindale

Just saw your post after I wrote the same. I agree.

  • TuuxKabin

Good for them all. Now nail ’em. All.

  • bambinoitaliano

No one person can get away with committing atrocities against another without the enablers. Staying silence or looking the other way is just the same as abetting someone in a crime.

    • jmax

Being in Oklahoma, I wouldn’t be surprised if she or someone in her family exercised their 2nd Amendment rights and took his sorry ass out.

  • lymis

Another issue. Legal age of consent for sex in Oklahoma is (according to the Internet) 16.

So, aside from the “ick factor,” what was the police-related issue with this guy having sex with a consenting 17 year-old?

    • Tawreos

Prostitution with a minor is different from sex with someone over the age of consent.

      • leo77

II wouldn’t assume from the use of the word “solicit” that Shorty was seeking payment from or offering payment too the participants in the proposed gang-bang.

        • clay

You don’t seem to have read the back-story. This is Joe’s third post in this guy. He was paying a ward of the state with money and drugs for sex.

          • leo77

I was not aware money and drugs were being exchanged.

    • leo77

    • RaygunsGoZap

Depends on how the law around that number is worded. Some places, you can’t be more than 2-3 years older than the 15/16/17 year old or it becomes statutory rape or similar. Weird thinkng that a child of age can consent to sex with a likewise aged peer but not an older adult.

      • Friday

Well, that actually makes sense, you dont’ want kids exploited, but you also don’t want to criminalize every high school romance, either.

  • gaycuckhubby

Somewhat related. Washington State Supreme Court recently ruled that if a guy under 18 takes a dick pic of himself then he is in possesion of child porn. And if he sends it to anyone he can be tried as an adult with sharing child porn.

    • Tawreos

      That is fucked up.

    • sword

Other states have also prosecuted juveniles for child pornography when they have sent nude photos to their underage girl/boy friends. They even have prosecuted parents for sending pictures of their children in the bath to the grandparents. So be careful of displaying that ‘cute’ photo of your naked child lying on a bear-skin rug to one of these over-zealous public moral ‘experts’.

These overzealous, sex scared asshats just make it harder to go after real, horrific child sexual abuse.
A 19 year old who has consensual sex with with their 17 year old bf/gf cab be on the same sex abuse registry as a child rapists.
An example of Americas tendency to require minimum sentences and give in to public fears

      • ColdCountry

If you’re sending the pics for sexual ends, then I can see the problem, however, prosecuting parents for sending pics of kids in the bath to grandparents? To me, that’s like blaming the person who sent pics of their toenail manicure to a friend and having them land in the hands of someone with a foot fetish.

A judge sentenced six male teenagers to conditional discharges Wednesday in provincial court in Bridgewater, N.S., for sharing intimate images of 19 girls without their consent.

A conditional discharge means if the teens follow court-imposed conditions for nine months, their convictions will be erased after three years.

The teens must do 50 hours of community service, attend counselling and meet with police. They also must stay away from the victims and their families. The teens are also not allowed to access or store pornography.

I’m in possession of pictures that my now deceased parents took of me when I was a toddler and in the bathtub, some of which show me naked. How exactly should I interpret the law with regard to said photos?

      • gaycuckhubby

Just stay out of Washington, I guess.

      • jmax

My father had slides of me in the bathtub as a two-year old. He gave them to me because he didn’t want to have them in his home anymore.
My partner is a school teacher and had the family of one of his students go through hell because someone at a Wal-Mart photo department reported them for possession of child pornography after having pictures developed of their children taking a bath. I can’t imagine how dirty-minded someone must be to think of those type pictures as pornographic.

        • AmeriCanadian

Intent matters. Whatever law does not take this into account is poorly written and should be overturned. If it doesn’t pass the “I know it when I see it” obscenity test (courtesy of SCOTUS justice Potter Stewart) then it shouldn’t be considered obscene.

        • Bj Lincoln

Some people take it to the extreme when it’s none of their business.

          • jmax

If I recall, there were lawsuits filed against Wal-Mart and the dirty-minded photo department associate but I don’t think anything came of it. Another reason to stay out of Wal-Mart, as if another was needed.

      • Bj Lincoln

Good question. I took a great photo of my 8 month old son nude on his belly on a large white rabbit fur. He was so cute with his little bum in the background. I also have pictures of him in the tub covered in bubbles and one playing with ‘paint’ soap. Are they porn or cute pics of the kid?

Some posts here are wondering about the child porn charges and conflating/confusing it with the moral v. legal rights and wrongs of having sex with a seventeen year old. I read that the porn featured a prepubescent girl.

“The child pornography charges stem from an incident when Shortey
allegedly used his smartphone and an AOL email address to email a
sexually explicit video involving a prepubescent girl and another
sexually explicit video involving young boys to two email addresses,
    according to court documents.”

Still acting as far as I can tell, although since the kiddie porn charges in 2002 he has only been in a couple of movies and television roles. According to wikipedia he has a son but it doesn’t say if his wife (now deceased) ever divorced him.
Edited to add: Looking at wikipedia, I had forgotten about his hilarious role as Criswell in Ed Wood.
