Hurricane Maria Devastates Dominica At Category 5, Governor Of Puerto Rico Calls For Evacuations [VIDEO]

NBC News reports:

Hurricane Maria left a trail of destruction as it hit the Caribbean island of Dominica as a Category 5 storm and then battered Guadeloupe with powerful winds early Tuesday. Forecasters warned that the storm could leave some parts of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands uninhabitable for months.

NBC News meteorologist Bill Karins highlighted that Maria was one of the fastest intensifying hurricanes ever recorded. It blew up from a tropical storm into a major Category 5 hurricane in barely more than a day.

Maria was expected to hit the Virgin Islands by Tuesday afternoon and Puerto Rico late Tuesday into early Wednesday, the hurricane center said. It warned the storm could be “potentially catastrophic.”

With hurricane-force winds likely to continue across both territories for as long as 24 hours, forecasters said, Maria was shaping up to be even more destructive than Hurricane Irma, which killed at least 70 people across the Caribbean and the Southeastern United States beginning in late August.

More from NPR:

Authorities in Puerto Rico are calling for “people in wooden or flimsy homes” to find shelter, The Associated Press reports. “You have to evacuate. Otherwise, you’re going to die,” said Puerto Rico’s public safety commissioner, Hector Pesquera, according to the news service. “I don’t know how to make this any clearer.”

Late Monday, President Trump approved emergency declarations for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands and authorized federal assistance and disaster relief efforts.

As NPR’s Colin Dwyer has reported, the U.S. territory is “already reeling from billions in debt” and is in the middle of a debt-restructuring process. The economic situation could make relief efforts that much more difficult. On islands already devastated by Irma, there are fears that a second hit could make a dangerous situation even worse by kicking up piles of debris

When a cat 5 hurricane isn’t the gravest threat to America and the world, you know it’s bad.

  • Gustav2

Will Goldman Sacks of Shit finally allow the Congress to restructure/forgive part of or most of the debt?

    • Tawreos

Of course not, paying debts is for other people not for “proper” Americans.

But whatever you do, don’t call it climate change or global warming cause that might hurt Don the Con’s feelings.

I wish that ploy worked when it comes to Health Care. “There are people visiting their doctors so now is not the time to discuss Obamacare.”

Oh, that wouldn’t work anyhow. I forgot they refuse to discuss their crap; they just try to ram it through.

      • lymis

Apparently the GOP likes devastation that whips up out of nowhere in a short period of time. Their plan will kill a hell of a lot more than 70 people.

Looks like Cat 6 hurricanes are going to be in our future sooner than I thought.

        • Karl Dubhe

Cat 5’s the limit. How far beyond ‘utter devastation’ do you go?

          • zhera

I guess when the size and sthrength of the hurricane is double what a ‘normal Cat 5 is, it’s time for new Categories.
            Cat 6, Cat 7, maybe even 8?

          • Karl Dubhe

Above five you’re just measuring the higher wind speed. That’s doable, but really the cat system was setup to serve as a warning, wasn’t it?

At five you’re fucked, why add the category of ‘fucked without a rubber’?

          • AmeriCanadian

I think higher category numbers would be useful for those that rely on building codes that use the current categories. I can’t recite the top wind speeds of each category but I would know what category my house or business was built to withstand. I would think insurance companies would be interested in this as well.

I already see a couple of folks talking about the 35 Labor Day hurricane as “proof” climate change is a myth.
Yes, there have been storms in previous history that have gone from a tropical storm to a cat 4 or 5 overnight.
But what was once a 25-50 year event is now becoming a yearly one.
And instead of just one, it is now 3 or 4.
To say climate change is a myth is a joke, it truly is.

    • Butch

Living in the Upper Peninsula it’s hard to get an accurate weather forecast so I check a news blog called MLive and the comment section for EVERY damn weather forecast turns into a right-wing “discussion” of the “myth” of global warming. Pointing out to these folks that weather isn’t climate is a waste and replying “save it for Oprah” in an effort to keep the discussion focused on the weather wasn’t well received, so I have to avoid the comments there.

Ive been to dominica. I stayed there for ten days researching jean rhys. There wasnt much left of a human history of rhys. I met two very old dominicans who lived in a one room house in hampstead who worked on the local estate where rhys and her husband spent their honeymoon. They were the only ones left that remembered her.
I was run out of a bar along with a brit straight couple. The owner made us leave for our own protection because a group of local men were calling us sodomites in patois.
Dominica is a very very beautiful island but it is the very backwater of the backwater in the caribbean.

Otherwise they are just refugees with money escaping from one devastated place to another in the same planet.

A very pretty pit of evil! πŸ˜‰

Vantablack is actually made of microscopic nano-tubes and absorbs over 99% percent of light, but availability is limited. A U.K. Artist has developed a paint that is nearly as good, absorbs (I think) over 98%. I tried to find it in the US but it looks like I’ll have to order it from the U.K.

The thing that’s amazing about it is that it reduces 3 dimensional objects to 2D silhouettes because it doesn’t reflect light, it absorbs it. Put it on top of standard black paint and the difference is amazing.

I agree. I call my odd interests my “hobby horses.” Mostly I’m able to resist temptation but sometimes someone will stumble on one of my trip-wires and I’m like:

“Did you know that the Titanic would not have sunk if it hit the iceberg head on?”

That is definitely a risk. But I decided to foster because having pets permanently doesn’t work for me. So even though it hurt to give away Orlando, I’m happy because he’s in a good home now. He was such a good boy!
He had lung worms and was very weak when he came to me. Could barely jump up on the windowsill. He loved to be brushed. The best part was that he did NOT want to sleep in my bed with me. Best cat ever!

          • greenmanTN

Thanks to a feral cat I CANNOT catch, I went from zero cats to 7. There were two litters of four but 1 refuses to come inside and is skittish. Another rarely comes in. On top of that Mama Cat just gave birth a few weeks ago to five more, so 1 cat has produced 13 kittens in barely over a year.

I had the first 8 kittens spayed/neutered but I can’t keep doing this.

God only knows. I’m waiting for the Inspiration Fairy to drop by. In the meantime I feed them. Within the last year or so the feral Mama Cat, which I have tried to catch and can’t, has had 3 litters, 4, 4, then 5 just a few weeks ago. I got the first 8 spayed/neutered (6 of them regularly come inside. Litter 2 sleep on my bed because I hand-raised them.) but I can’t keep doing that.

The only thing I know to do is call animal control, but I’ve been putting it off. I go through a 13lb bag of kibble in about 8 or 9 days.

Crazy cat lady ain’t got nothing on you!

Your place must be wonderful chaos. I’d love to see a photo at maximum cat capacity in your current situation!

Our four are properly contained and have had all reproductive functions switched off, and I’d like to say that we are at perfect equilibrium with the number we have, but if a cute black boy stray found way into my yard… ugh… game over.

          • greenmanTN

Here’s the problem with calling animal control. There was a news story in the local paper about someone who was walking through the city dump and saw a plastic bag that seemed to be moving, so he tore it open. It was full of kittens, some dead, some alive. It turned out that they came from the local animal shelter and had all been gassed, though obviously not enough to actually kill them, then put them in a bag and threw them away. People stepped up to adopt the living kittens, but some of those which lived were so far gone they had to be euthanized.

This was just 2 or 3 years ago.

I’ve contacted a local no-kill shelter but they say they are overwhelmed.

          • vorpal 😼

I fostered two cats once and while one of the cats was truly horrible and I was happy to see her go, the other was so incredibly sweet and cute that the adopters had to pry his little orange kitten self out of my arms.

When I lived in Houston I had an apartment fire. I’m told I died and had to be defibrillated and resuscitated between the door and the ambulance. At the time I had two cats, Figgy, named after the Edward Gorey character

            http://www.goreystore.com/sites/goreystore.com/files/imagecache/product_full/products/27701.jpg

And Nemo, named after Winsor McKay’s beautifully drawn “Little Nemo In Slumberland.” McKay is credited with inventing animation, the idea of a succession of drawings seeming to come alive. I got him for free from a storefront “psychic.”

            https://maniacallycomical.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/little-nemo.jpg

            Nemo lived, Figgy didn’t.

I was in the hospital for over a week but somehow a friend managed to catch Nemo and took him to her apartment, where he hid under the stove for the entire time. The day I got out of the hospital I went to her apartment and called to him and he came running! From that moment on we were joined at the hip. Several people said they had never seen a cat so enmeshed with a human being. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/433f2d85ed0aaf563b10c6dcd6d97eda9ad4cde8145efba4f27bdd6cca813787.jpg
