NYT: Paul Manafort Warned To Expect Indictment

The New York Times reports:

Paul J. Manafort was in bed early one morning in July when federal agents bearing a search warrant picked the lock on his front door and raided his Virginia home. They took binders stuffed with documents and copied his computer files, looking for evidence that Mr. Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman, set up secret offshore bank accounts. They even photographed the expensive suits in his closet.

The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, then followed the house search with a warning: His prosecutors told Mr. Manafort they planned to indict him, said two people close to the investigation.

The moves against Mr. Manafort are just a glimpse of the aggressive tactics used by Mr. Mueller and his team of prosecutors in the four months since taking over the Justice Department’s investigation into Russia’s attempts to disrupt last year’s election, according to lawyers, witnesses and American officials who have described the approach. Dispensing with the plodding pace typical of many white-collar investigations, Mr. Mueller’s team has used what some describe as shock-and-awe tactics to intimidate witnesses and potential targets of the inquiry.

LOTS more at the link.

UPDATE: Major scoop from CNN.

US investigators wiretapped former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort under secret court orders before and after the election, sources tell CNN, an extraordinary step involving a high-ranking campaign official now at the center of the Russia meddling probe. The government snooping continued into early this year, including a period when Manafort was known to talk to President Donald Trump.

Some of the intelligence collected includes communications that sparked concerns among investigators that Manafort had encouraged the Russians to help with the campaign, according to three sources familiar with the investigation. Two of these sources, however, cautioned that the evidence is not conclusive.

A secret order authorized by the court that handles the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) began after Manafort became the subject of an FBI investigation that began in 2014. It centered on work done by a group of Washington consulting firms for Ukraine’s former ruling party, the sources told CNN.

    Delightful. Literally.

      Oh happy, happy dance!!

      • TK

VERY happy dance! Hoping Manafort will spill the beans on many others including Cheetolini himself in exchange for leniency. I doubt he’ll fall on his sword for the Twidiot.

        • bkmn

Mueller conducted a raid on Manaforts home a couple of months ago because he knew he was likely to destroy evidence, which means he probably is building a very strong case again Manafort and Trump.

        • lymis

Given how much surveillance he’s been under, many beans may already have been spilled. Here’s hoping.

      • HandsomeMrToad

Well, it’s FUN. But it won’t really help. The future of USA is still in the toilet. This won’t stop Trump from doing his damage, and don’t fool yourselves: he is going to do a great deal of long-term damage. Even if his entire legislative agenda remains stalled–which is not by any means certain, since the Republicans will almost certainly expand their Senate majority in 2018–but even if they don’t, TRUMP IS TOTALLY TRANSFORMING THE JUDICIARY. Even if he only lasts one term, he will still appoint a record-breaking number of Federal judges, including, possibly, as many as FOUR SCOTUS justices IN ADDITION TO Gorsuch (replacements for RBGinsburg, Kennedy, Breyer, and Clarence Thomas Long Dong Silver). Note that RBGinsburg and Breyer are central to the liberal wing of SCOTUS and Kennedy is a swing vote. By 2024 the SCOTUS will be ENTIRELY composed of right-wing activists except for Kagen and Sotomayor! And if you look at Trump’s list of likely nominees, you will see that Gorsuch was one of the LEAST objectionable! One of the most likely is William Pryor, an extreme partisan practical results-oriented right-wing activist who will abuse the office in ways even Scalia never imagined. For the next quarter century, we will have the SCOTUS from Hell.

And if Trump goes down because of Russia or for some other reason, we’ll have President Mike Pence. That will be WORSE–he will be able to keep the Republicans in the House and Senate in line. Trump at least has the virtue of shooting himself in the foot.

And I’m not optimistic about 2020 either. The Republicans are purging the voter rolls in the name of imaginary voter-fraud, and the states which elected Trump–Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, Florida, Virginia, maybe a couple of others–are very unlikely to switch away from the Republicans in 2020. The intensity-gap will still be there, and Trump’s base seems willing to stick with him no matter how much he screws them. They blame the “RINO”s and the “establishment” for every betrayal. And the Dems do not seem to have an un-flawed champion. All the top Dems seem to be Senators, and Senators do not usually win the White House–Obama was an exception, and his opponent was also a Senator (McCain)! Maybe someone we don’t know about yet will spring up, but I wouldn’t bet on it.

I think a lot of people do not realize what a terrible disaster we have on our hands. The only consolation I have is that if Hillary had won in 2016, the same disaster would have occurred in 2020–the same party never holds the White House for four terms; the last time it happened was FDR. The same party seldom holds it even for THREE terms; the only time in my lifetime was 1988 when Bush the Elder won after Reagan.

The wisest course, as far as I can see, is to start looking at job opportunities somewhere like Denmark, New Zealand, or Portugal.

Last week Maddow noted the Trump transition folks met with the King of Jordan, among others, in secret. One of the other meetings resulted in Susan Rice unmasking the Trumpists to determine what the meeting was about. The King of Jordan meeting, on the other hand, was leaked in a way that implied the government had a transcript of the call at the time, and therefore knew the Trumpists we’re discussing the Flynn nuclear power plan. Got me to wondering, could the King of Jordan have been wearing a wire for the FBI?

I’m waiting for a bunch of shoes to drop that implicate the entire Mercer family and their underwriting of the Russians’ part in swinging the election in favor of Trump.

    • UrsusArctos

Interestingly, in her interview on NPR Fresh Air this morning HRC pointed out that the Mercers/Cambridge Analytica were also all over the overturned Kenyan election. The Supreme Court there saw far too many irregularities to let results stand. It’s seeming more and more like the Mercers are Xian mercenaries doing Putin’s bidding – Brexit/45*/Kenya.

The caution driven so deeply into her and her team by years of attacks, always crouching and playing defensive was used as a bludgeon to do her in. She had an uphill haul to get a 3rd Democratic term but could have likely done it against the rest of the GOP field. *sigh*

  • Rebecca Gardner

OT but I think I figured out how to shut bat shit crazy RWNJs up. You either write in a different language, or write in English, but with the accent of a different area of the English speaking world. I had a Scottish girlfriend and now I am speaking to a Scottish man as kinky as I am on a twice daily basis as we build a relationship. I typed this and still no response…

    https://twitter.com/BikerBecca/status/909925738672992256

    • Treant

I’m translating that as, “Fuck you, asshole.”

      • Rebecca Gardner

It would translate to, “You’re not making any sense you little whiner. Now get lost.”

        Please, all native Scott’s confirm.

      • Rebecca Gardner

Ya, when I was dating me wee Glaswegian lass, everyone would look at me for the translation every time she opened her mouth.

        My favorite interaction was.
Her: Ey kin eat a skabbi heided wain!!!
        Friends: *blank stares at me*
        Me: She’s hungry.

        • Treant

          I can date a scabby-headed child?

          That’s a bit dark. 🙂

          • Rebecca Gardner

“I can eat a scabby headed baby”

Yeah, very dark Scottish humor. Don’t fuck with the Scotts. Hasn’t Sean Connery taught us that?

    • 2guysnamedjoe

My dear old granny used to say things like that.
      Ah, memories!

  • Mickey Bitsko

I have a problem believing this. Why would prosecutors during a search tell him they were planning to indict him somewhere down the line? I have to wonder if this is Manafort’s people playing the Times for scotch and sympathy.

    • Reality.Bites

Push him towards making a deal sooner rather than later?

Words that have comforted me since February – the unnamed senior intelligence agent who said of Trump, “He will die in jail.”

    • TampaDink

I take great comfort in those words too!

    • Do Something Nice

      More likely, in a dacha.

    • Reality.Bites

But not anytime soon. May he live for a long time in jail, with PharmaDouche as a cellmate

      • Treant

Naw, keep them each by himself. Having nobody to brag to will drive both of them nuts.

        • barrixines

It would be cruel and unusual punishment if the first thing PharmaDouche saw every morning when he opened his eyes was Trump sitting on the crapper.

          • Reality.Bites

But Trump would finally be able to grab a pussy whenever he wants

        • Reality.Bites

More than having someone who won’t stop bragging long enough to let the other brag?

Funniest line from the Emmy broadcast last night: Dolly Parton calls her boobs “shock and awe”. LOL

    • barrixines

I read that the Trumpanzees were attacking Dolly on her Facebook page for appearing with Hanoi Jane and the lesbian. You’ve really lost the plot beyond all reason going for Dolly.

      • Joe in PA

Exactly. I saw that story as well. WTF already? I’m never going back to Dollywood!

Yeah, the last line(s) really sucked ass and not in a good way. You think that’s bad, you should read my haikus. “Syllables Schmyllables, I’m only off by one!”

As an apology, here’s one by Edward Gorey:

A beetling young woman named Pridgets
          Had a violent abhorrence of midgets;
Off the end of a wharf
          She once pushed a dwarf
Whose truncation reduced her to fidgets.

          https://i.redd.it/x13ksd33ypnx.jpg

It will surprise no one that I have a fairly large collection of Gorey books and ephemera, much of it signed. Every time I was in NYC I’d stop by the Gotham Book Shop, which had an ongoing relationship with Gorey.

In 1977 did the stage and costume design for a Broadway production of Dracula starring Frank Langella. This isn’t a good picture, but I have a piece of the silkscreened wallpaper designed by Gorey. My two favorite Limericks are:

            “There’s a train at four-four [4:04],” said Miss Jenny,
“Four tickets I’ll take. Have you any?”
Said the man at the door:
            “Not four for four four,
For four for four four is too many!”

            AND

There were two young ladies from Birmingham,
And this is the story concerning ’em:
            They lifted the frock
            And they ddddled the ccck
of the bishop engaged in confirming ’em.

Now, the Bishop was nobody’s fool,
He’d been to a good public school,
            So he lowered his breeches
            And buuggered those bttches,
            With his ten-inch episcopal tool.

But that didn’t bother the two.
They laughed, as the bishop withdrew:
            “The Vicar is quicker,
            And thicker, and slicker,
And longer, and stronger, than you!”

          • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

We had to write a limerick in English class. Here’s mine; teechur said it was inappropriate but gave me an A anyway.

There once was a comely young maid,
Who was asked if she’d like to get laid.
She replied, ‘Yes I do, but I scarcely know you,
And what’s more, I expect to be paid.

          • HandsomeMrToad

Outstanding! I would give you an A too.

I was in the same situation–assigned to write a Limerick for English class.. My Limerick was not as clever as yours. It went:

“There are laws against reading this poem.
Look in your law-texts, they’ll show ’em!
So do not read these lines
            Or you’ll have to pay fines;
You’ll be thrown into jail if you know ’em!”

          • dagobarbz, fine Italian shoes

            That’s very good, Mr. Toad!

          • HandsomeMrToad

            My favorite Edward Gorey is:

A is for Amy who fell down the stairs.
B is for Basil assaulted by bears.
C is for Clara who wasted away.
D is for Desmond thrown out of a sleigh.
E is for Ernest who choked on a peach.
F is for Fanny sucked dry by a leech.
G is for George smothered under a rug.
H is for Hector done in by a thug.
I is for Ida who drowned in a lake.
J is for James who took lye by mistake.
K is for Kate who was struck with an axe.
L is for Leo who choked on some tacks.
M is for Maud who was swept out to sea.
N is for Neville who died of ennui.
O is for Olive run through with an awl.
P is for Prue trampled flat in a brawl.
Q is for Quentin who sank on a mire.
R is for Rhoda consumed by a fire.
S is for Susan who perished of fits.
T is for Titus who flew into bits.
U is for Una who slipped down a drain.
V is for Victor squashed under a train.
W is for Winnie embedded in ice.
X is for Xerxes devoured by mice.
Y is for Yorick whose head was bashed in.
Z is for Zillah who drank too much gin.

And I’ve always liked the following, although it’s not Edward Gorey:

            Have Angleworms attractive homes?
            Do Bumblebees have brains?
            Do Caterpillars carry combs?
            Do Dodos dote on drains?
            Can Eels elude elastic earls?
            Do Flatfish fish for flats?
            Are Grigs agreeable to girls?
            Do Hares have hunting-hats?
Do Ices make an Ibex ill?
            Do Jackdaws jug their jam?
Do Kites kiss all the kids they kill?
            Do Llamas live on lamb?
Will Moles molest a mounted mink?
            Do Newts deny the news?
Are Oysters boisterous when they drink?
            Do Parrots prowl in pews?
Do Quakers get their quills from Quails?
            Do Rabbits rob on roads?
Are Snakes supposed to sneer at snails?
            Do Tortoises tease toads?
            Can Unicorns perform on horns?
            Do Vipers value veal?
Do Weasels weep when fast asleep?
            Can Xylophagans squeal?
Do Yaks in packs invite attacks?
            Are Zebras full of zeal?

My ex-partner and I took a vacation to the Northeast. One of the places we stayed was the Wayside Inn. The room we stayed in was very strange. For one thing you could see through the gaps between the floorboards to the restaurant below. But the big thing was that there pieces of paper stuck into every nook and cranny, drawers full of them, thousands, and they were all from people who had stayed there and had that room. So I decided that I would write a limerick.

There once was a couple from Texas
Comprised of only one of the sexes,
          Tomorrow we go
          To Salem you know
Hopefully avoiding all trouble and hexes.

To this old inn came two guys
Who only for each other had eyes
          In the very same bed
Where you now rest your head
They emitted loud moans and sighs.

Then I stuck between the ceiling and a beam right above the bed.

I’m disappointed there is not a story on here about Scout Schultz – the Student President of Pride Alliance @ Georgia Tech who died after being shot by campus police. They were by all accounts not just a fighter for LGBT rights, but human rights. Am I missing the story?

    • Lazycrockett

It was reported yesterday on here. There seems to be a lot of speculation as this may have been a suicide by cop situation.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I really hate suicide by cop. It’s like how some people jump in front of a commuter train.

I do think we need more non-lethal options. I thought we had bean bag cannons that could knock people off their feet w/o killing them. I’m also someone who always wonders why rubber bullets aren’t used more often.

        • Lazycrockett

Well this was a student with a knife coming towards campus cops, who probably have very little experience on dealing with this situation. This was the first time a campus cop has ever shot someone on the campus. I agree with the notion of dealing with suspects differently but in this there wasnt a lot of options.

        • Lazycrockett

Suicide by cop is a real dick move.

          • Ninja0980

Yup, especially since in most of these cases, the cops did try to talk them out of it.

          • Lazycrockett

I mean shit looking around it doesn’t seem that hard to score some fentanyl in rural Ga.

      • coram nobis

Speculation. You have it. Needs more digging. And if this person had a knife, a cop with suitable baton training should have been able to subdue him. Broke his wrist, maybe, but that’s better than his ending up on a morgue slab.

        • safari

Which reminds me, should I see what it’s like to be tazed? I have the opportunity to do so.

        • E.J.

“A new report from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation states that Scout Schultz was the one that made the 911 call to Georgia Tech Police alerting them of a suspicious person on campus. During the call, Schultz described the person as a white male with long blond hair, white t-shirt and blue jeans who is possible intoxicated, holding a knife and possibly armed with a gun on his hip.

Investigators also found a total of three suicide notes located in Schultz’s dormitory room. A multi-purpose tool containing a knife was recovered from the scene. No firearms were recovered.”

          http://www.cbs46.com/story/36384877/officer-involved-shooting-investigated-at-georgia-tech

          • Lazycrockett

and this to me raises numerous alarms, that this situation could unfold in a thousand different ways. In today’s world of using cars to kill this could be read as a trap to kill cops.

          • coram nobis

All the more reasons to resort to weapons of less potential lethality, batons, multiple officers, cajoling. Police today seem more lethal but less disciplined and more hair-trigger and more frightened, somehow.

    • gaycuckhubby

It’s messy… I think it’s fair to question the police conduct but Scout called the cops out themself and refused to drop their weapon. They also left three suicide notes. It appears to be suicide by cop.

This is a major message to Trump & Co. from Mueller. It does not mean there will be charges next month but it lets him/them know they are on the trail and already have some very solid evidence. It is also an attempt to get Manafort to flip and confirm evidence they already have and provide additional nails for the coffin.

Add in the fact that Trump has not been able to hire the best lawyers and you can understand why Trump will be getting very nervous in the next few weeks/months. I hope he does not become more rash and do something like lob a nuke.

      • bkmn

If Trump pardons Manafort it will be challenged in court since Trump was a beneficiary of the laws that he and Manafort broke and I don’t think courts would allow the pardon to stand. The same is true if Pence was aware/complicit which I believe he was (remember that Manafort held Trump’s plane until Pence could join them). Courts, even if they are stacked, do not like this kind of collusion to take away their power to rule.

The walls are closing in on Trump – expect more irrational moves from him like deporting DACA kids, attacks on the LGBTQ community to shore up his Teavangelical support, attacks on minorities, attacks on women. The goal is to distract from the crimes he has and continues to commit. His ass is on the line and he knows it.

And be sure to contact your Senators and Representatives ASAP to let them know you are against repealing the ACA for a tax cut for the billionaires. This is not optional.

There was also some bad blood between PA Democrats after the primary from what I read.
Once again, Republicans get in line, Democrats didn’t.

          • Lumpy Gaga

The “establishment” PA Dems couldn’t even get it together to overthrow Brian Sims in a State House primary.

Not much better here in NY.
All I can say is this.. Cuomo shouldn’t be allowed near the Democratic nomination, too much baggage.

OT https://www.theverge.com/2017/9/18/16329348/pepe-matt-furie-legal-takedown-alt-right-the-donald I hope the guy doesn’t get beaten up by Nazis.

“Pepe the Frog will no longer be a go-to symbol for the white supremacist far right, if creator Matt Furie has his way. Motherboard reports that Furie’s legal representatives have sent DMCA takedown notices to “alt-right”-affiliated sites and figures using the symbol, including white nationalist Richard Spencer’s Altright.com and the r/The_Donald subreddit, which still features the cartoon frog prominently on its front page. The legal team also takes credit for getting Amazon to pull a book by far-right personality Baked Alaska (also known as Tim Gionet), who used Pepe in the cover art, among several smaller victories.”

I have to wonder how much should have come out sooner OR if the intel community should have quietly gotten the politicians to kill Trump’s run much earlier. There looks like an accountability issue / national security issue in letting him run for president.
