AUSTRALIA: Haters Skywrite “Vote No” Over Sydney

Gay Star News reports:

Skywriting appeared over Sydney today to encourage Australians to ‘Vote No’ to marriage equality. Australians are currently voting in a expensive and divisive postal vote on same-sex marriage. They have until 27 October to post their votes back, with results announced 15 November. But the ‘No’ campaign ramped up their attempts to sway people against same-sex marriage in various locations across Sydney.

From the skywriting GoFundMe page:

It’s time for traditional Australian’s to take a stand! We have been bullied into silence, condemned for our views and ignored and vilified by the media. Enough is enough! It’s time we all sent a clear message that we will not put up with our way of life been deconstructed any further! If you feel like us that its time finally for our voice to be heard, join us as we shout our message “Vote No” into the sky for all to see. This is your chance to help ensure our voice is ignored no longer and take joy in knowing that our message will be painted bright sky for all to see!

  • teeveedub

I’m surprised they spelled it right.

    • bkmn

were you hoping for ‘VETO ON’?

      • Chucktech

C’mon. These are Australian haters, not American cretins.

        • The New Paige Turner™

The Australian Christian lobby gets all its material from The Family research council.

They use the same arguments and talking points.

“Every child deserves a Mum (Mom) and a Dad”

          Sound familiar?

    • another_steve

Me too. Our enemies are idiots.

We’re blessed by the caliber of our foes.

    • prixator

That was because it was just two words. They lucked out.

Their GoFundMe page demonstrates that they are far from literate.

  • bkmn

    It’s a message from DOG!

  • another_steve

Homo hate is a disease on its way out. It’s no longer useful to our species.

In the fullness of time, it’ll wither on the vine and fall away.

    • Chucktech

      Ballpark figure on when?

      • Cackalaquiano

The current generation of old angry white men needs to die off. Then our society will move forward.

        • Chucktech

Problem is that they educate their progeny.

          • Cackalaquiano

It’s not as easy to have social subgroups so cloistered anymore, exposed only to one ideology. We’re too mobile, too connected now. Seriously, wait a generation and almost nobody will care one way or the other about homosexuality. Kids these days don’t care.
            Have hope.

          • Ken M

The definition of “educate” has changed. Youtube and Google are having bigger impacts on not just the youth, but on all of us to some degree. It’s not that the youth don’t “care” about what has always been deemed important. They just have much easier ways to access the info, and until history books are as complete/updated as Wikipedia, is that really such a bad thing?

          • j.martindale

Home schooling will be the death of us all.

          • Gustav2

It is going to take a while.

          • UrsusArctos

Indoctrinate, not educate. As evidenced by the boom in home schooling and seg academies.

      • another_steve

        Eventually.

Homophobia probably has its biological evolutionary roots in the instinctual species survival mandate: Reproduce, or die out.

At one time in our evolution, men and women needed to reproduce like rabbits. There were diseases out there that killed our offspring at very early ages and big animals that dragged us out of our caves and ate us. All the tribes were warring against one another and killing lots of people.

The Jews understood this (we’re a smart people) and had their god mandate that men should only fuck women. The stuff in Leviticus concerning that is a manifestation of the species survival mandate.

All that is in the past. There are plenty of human beings now.

        Homophobia will gradually fade away.

        • Hue-Man

The situation has reversed completely in India and China where the male/female ratio is 1.08 and 1.06 respectively, due to female fetuses being aborted. (USA 0.97)

In a hundred years there may be no gay and no straight people at all on this planet, if we don’t stop hurling carbon into the atmosphere.

We are staring at a great human and animal extinction, although plants will likely survive and maybe evolution will start all over again as the plants fix the carbon into organic form and release oxygen.

But how many thousands of millions of years will it take to remake the planet as habitable for a neurolinguistically “advanced” species that has to evolve and adapt from the basic simple DNA on up the scale of complexity?

Of course since no one will be consciously counting, it could be like the “blink of an eye”.

Still, what a shame that all the wondrous diversity that is here and that humans added to so prolifically, all that will be lost, along with human products of culture and advanced technology. We can probably weep for our lost species.

Because, religion, hatred and unbridled greed.

          • another_steve

Capitalism in its most raw and naked form – raw and naked economic greed – will save us from the brink.

Irreversible damage is already occurring as a result of global warming and will continue to intensify in the near future. Eventually though, businesses will start losing big big money as a result of the accumulating damage.

Insurers will no longer be able to insure homes and properties. Home and property owners won’t be able to afford the premiums of insurance companies still in business. Big Business – agro-industry included – will start losing billions and billions of dollars.

That’s when the brakes will be applied on carbon emissions. Only then – when raw economic pain and greed kick in.

          • zhera

Agreed. And then it will be too late.

          • northern_neighbour

I sadly agree with practically everything you foresee, but tragically by the time the brakes actually start kicking in it will be too late.

As the planet continues to warm, even due to the existing levels, the melted permafrost is going to release vast quantities of methane into the atmosphere, which molecule for molecule retains 30 times as much heat as CO2. The rapid lost of the permafrost will also increase decomposition of great amounts of plant materials releasing huge extra amounts of CO2.

The emissions of CO2 by human use of fossil fuels are about 55% of the total CO2 added to the atmosphere. 45% from the ecosystem itself, but at the higher earth temperatures the contribution of the ecosystem will substantially rise, which is why scientists think we are already at, near or even past the tipping point.

So it won’t matter if the capitalists put on the brakes, it will be too late.

This is why Obama’s initiatives and the Paris agreement were so important, precisely because we are already at or near or past the point of no return. Another 2 or 3 Republican election cycles where they control policy and it probably won’t matter any more what measures are enacted. The billionaires however will be able to afford to build hermetically sealed/engineered micro environments … the rest of us
or our children anyhow will participate in the great extinction process.

It is hard to say whether the entire humanspecies will entirely die out.

Maybe the billionaire class will hang on in their cocoons and find a way for plutocrats to survive in small numbers despite the giant storms, floods, super tornados, sunken cities, and chewed up forests and barren agricultural lands. But the general die off will be their fault.

So in a way, the fundie Xianistas are right about getting raptured, but not up to paradise, but down to hell instead, a hellish eternal death where they and their posterity are utterly wiped out in a world where overpopulation and eco-distruction could have been largely avoided by sane policies over the last 50 years or so.

          • another_steve

I’m pretty confident that if the human species is destined to go extinct, it’ll be either as a result of worldwide nuclear conflagration or a new and 100 percent deadly virus that’s spread as easily as the common cold virus. Either is possible imo.

I do have confidence, however, in the power of human greed and the power of the free market to save us from the brink of global warming extinction.

        • Ben in Oakland

I think homophobia has its roots in just plain old fashioned misogyny.

          • Gustav2

            That’s what a girl would say!! /s

          • another_steve

I agree that misogyny is very connected to homophobia. You’ll have a hard time finding a person who’s into one of those things but not both.

I’m pretty much an absolutist biological determinist. I believe misogyny also has biological evolutionary roots – similar to what I described in my other comment on homophobia. From a pure species survival perspective, males (many, not all) sense/feel a need for women to be sexually submissive.

Mind you, I’m in no way condoning misogyny or being an apologist for misogynists. I just believe that all human behaviors have their roots in biological evolutionary mandates – some of which no longer apply in today’s world and which will eventually fade from human consciousness and experience.

Go read the comments section of the GoFundMe page. They are wonderful. This was my favorite so far.

Even if you win the no vote, gay people will still teach your kids, nurse you in hospital, cook for you in restraunts, protect you, employ you. However whats most important is that they will keep on loving each other, building homes together and creating loving families. Love will always win.

“We have been bullied into silence, condemned for our views and ignored and vilified by the media.”

No. What has happened is that traditional prejudices and bigotries, never before subjected to internal or external scrutiny, have been challenged. And when they’ve been challenged they’re discovered not to have originated from noble sentiment or identifiably moral impulse, but from mean and ugly instinct, not from reasoned examination but from pre-rational reflex.

Put more simply, your imagined moral opposition isn’t actually a moral stance but textbook bigotry. You conflate the two but of course you don’t see that you’re doing so. But this doesn’t excuse you.

You, traditionalists, can’t imagine that there’s any problem in scapegoating people, or spreading lies and urban legends about them, or whipping up hysteria about an the imagined imminent threat posed by LGBT people to various and arbitrary generalized constructs like the family, or morality itself, or the integrity of the country. All of these vile smears and libels are integral to how you speak about other people. It’s what you believe about them. Your self-identity and religious identity are built around denigrating others. It’s who you are, and it’s what you mistake for a moral view of the world.

What an absurdity to cry about the suppression of your views when the entirety of your views about LGBT people is based, not on truth, but on a whole fabric of misinformation and deliberately repeated lies and libels, the very purpose of which is to suppress their humanity, their voices, their history, their suffering, their hopes, their demand for equal treatment.

Up until the end you still can’t accurately identify or tell the truth about what’s really going on: “It’s time we all sent a clear message that we will not put up with our way of life been deconstructed any further!”

This is another wholesale confusion, and thus another indication that you lack the moral understanding necessary to be making judgments about others: Your ‘way of life’ is not being deconstructed. LGBT equality is not a subtraction from your life, your rights, yourselves. Your ‘way of life’ does not encompass everyone else’s, regardless of what you want to believe. You don’t own the country, its values, institutions, its religious beliefs, its basket of basic rights.

As much as you hate the idea, you don’t get to tell other people what they can do, how much their lives matter, or what their rights are. Your idea about what other people are isn’t universal; it is not a fact, despite what you believe.

“If you feel like us that its time finally for our voice to be heard…”

It’s not that your voice hasn’t been heard, but that it HAS. And it’s been found woefully unprepared, ignorant, irrational and guided by animus. Until you can face this fact, you won’t understand why you perceive yourself to be not heard.

It’s just what the Irish bigots were complaining about a few years ago. It’s almost as if they all went to Poor Persecuted Bigots School.

      • David L. Caster

The echo is of the same tired and described campaigns of NOM and the RCC that have been heard ahead of votes for marriage equality around the world. Anti gay sentiment always relies on lies and distortions manufactured by a few bigots that beat the drums of hatred and prejudice.

      • JackFknTwist

Well I think we gave a decisive answer to the bigots who voted for traditional marriage in the Irish Equality Referendum.
But yes, so called moral positions are just a thin film of deceit to cover basic bigotry and mean spiritedness.

        • Ben in Oakland

You should have read all of the whining. I remember one saying basically this: “The government was against us. The media was against us. We couldn’t raise the money. Young people have left the church.”
Mt response to her was : “Why, YES! That’s why you lost. Anybody with any brains or heart was against you.”

          • JackFknTwist

yes it was quite the exchange . I was very worried about that Referendum, but and I attended many meetings/rallies, complete with whining !!
But it was my nephew who reassured me that the younger generation was totally triggered about the vote. The law required equal airtime for the “whiners” , but they got their ‘come-uppence’ in the end.

Now the whining has started about an upcoming abortion referendum. I guess these battles never end.
But God help Australia, I fear this will not end well !

    • Reality.Bites

The resistance is this strong everywhere. What matters is how many are in it. What I’m not hearing about are people marching against it in the thousands. Happened in the US, Canada, France for sure. Can’t remember for sure where else it didn’t or did.

They’re trying Prop 8 tactics that haven’t worked once since Prop 8. And Australians have seen all of them. They are deeply embarrassed by being last among the countries they feel closest to and by the political machinations that have caused it.

  • Gigi

The “No!” crowd knew that simply denying LGBT people the right to same-sex marriage because they found gays (and gay sex) ‘icky’ would make them look silly, so they moved to the ‘gay marriage robs a child of a biological dad and mum’ argument. Which is an absurd argument on its face as, according to them, gays only make up about 1% of the population. And since very few gay couples who marry want to have/raise children all it does is shine a light on a very real problem – divorce. Divorce is what robs children of their biological dads and mums, not SSM. If they were truly concerned about the welfare of children the “No!” crowd would be working to ban divorce.

    • Jerry Kott

However, using logic and rational thought will never convince those who base their sense of power by getting the way of full Equality, will never bring them to their senses.
Many people’ sense of Power comes from standing in the way of others or on their backs. There measure of power comes from taking others authority away. They will repeat a lie over and over and over again and expect it to morph into the truth. That is how self-hypnosis works.

I think it’s better to let the antis, or whatever they are called, have their say, including by hiring one’s own skywriter. Doing so legitimizes the eventual success of equality.

I don’t really understand that “…we will not put up with our way of life been deconstructed any further!” I mean, I didn’t know that marrying someone of the same sex was mandatory; I naïvely thought that it was a personal and private decision who you marry. Gee, it’s really going to suck when all your marriages are dissolved and you have to liquidate and split the assets.
