DOJ To Rollback Obama’s Police Oversight Program

The Hill reports:

The Department of Justice announced Friday that it’s rolling back an Obama-era program created to help improve trust between police agencies and the communities they serve. The department said it’s making significant changes to an office that investigated and issued public reports about problems it found in individual police departments.

DOJ said the changes to the program “will return control to the public safety personnel sworn to protect their communities and focus on providing real-time technical assistance to best address the identified needs of requesting agencies to reduce violent crime.” The move falls in line with Sessions’ tough-on-crime policies and President Trump’s pro-police administration.

I am now going to send the Evil Eye – a very old and very potent Jewish curse – to Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Please divert your gaze away from the Evil Eye. People here on JMG who have gazed at it in my previous comments report ongoing bowel and continence issues.

In other words, we’ll look away.

    • RaygunsGoZap

I read that as “expeditiously ensuring all requests for military-grade hardware are approved”

      • safari

The truth is the only things that were added back into the military/police purchasing were equipment like attack planes, bayonets, and grenade launchers: things that no police force should have. Obama’s halt to police purchasing military equipment was very limited to such things… they could always get other equipment. Donald just let them get this other equipment.

    • kaydenpat

Look away and actively support bad cops.

It’s stories like this that make my blood boil when I recall idiots like Jill Stein and Susan Sarandon arguing that Secretary Clinton would be worse than Trump.

    • safari

Fun story: during police negotiations my mom’s chief would close the blinds to his office at night and not enter into it the next day if they were open during union negotiations. And this is in a low-crime, mostly white place.

      • Cuberly

Isn’t it interesting that the teachers union is one of the most vilified by the right-wing? But when police wish to organize thats somehow MORE than desirable? Not only desirable but it enables extraordinary powers to it.

        • safari

When Detroit went through bankruptcy they tried not to touch the police or firefighter union retirements and slashed everything else. When “right to work” is pushed through for public sector employees, they are routinely excluded. Gotta keep them happy.

    Trump’s pro-police administration?

With a rather selective interpretation of the subject depending on who is committing what crimes. A Nazi drives a car into protesters at speed, killing one of them and maiming others? Not a damned word, if anything the victims are the ones being blamed, with their beliefs and behavior being scrutinized.

    • Jerry Kott

As I have brought to the attention here before, my partner and I have had a front row seat as to how police operate. Don’t forget to have your recording devices charged to document any events that occur before the police arrive( if you have a need and choose to call them. Please don’t be afraid. I am an old white man and have learn much from our challenge. But fearing them gives them Power. They have authority but no power.
Recently we discovered a photo on line of our stalking neighbor who is chummy with the police, giving the local Police Chief a check for $500 dollars(long story). We believe that photo explains a lot as to why the bullet holes in our property were never investigated because the person giving the check to the chief is the prime suspect..

Just curious here, I would like to know how many here trust calling their police in case where there is a crime? and if you called them would your trust they would take your concerns seriously. Myself, like many use to have a measured degree of trust of the police until I became a crime victim. Now I don’t trust them at all.

    • MBI

We called the police after our home invasion at gun point ealier this year.
My nephew called the police who helped him changed his blown tired.
My niece once dialed 911 by mistake.

      • Jerry Kott

But did they treat your concerns with a degree of professionalism after they arrived?

        • MBI

Yes, I think so or maybe I was too distraught that day to be concerned with that. And even if they didn’t, who else am I supposed to called after 4 guys entered our house with guns? The police came first, detectives arrived about an hour later.

I’m Asian but we live in a city where Asians isn’t a minority. I’m sure there are bad apples and racist cops somewhere out there.

    • Cackalaquiano

I’ve had limited experiences with police, but I’ve always found them professional, helpful, etc. I’m white, but gay and with a Latino husband. But nobody can deny there are issues that we need to work out in this country. I don’t know what the answer is. Scapegoating all police doesn’t help, but denying there’s a problem and making no effort to change it doesn’t help either.

      • Jerry Kott

Thanks. I was curious since there is animosity here in post and I was wondering if it was based on personal experience.
Decades ago when my partner and I were gaylings living in NYC, we had our first adult experience with Law Enforcement. We were young and had a dear friend who was tragically senselessly murdered on his way home from work on a rainy Friday night. Our worlds were turned upside down. We dealt with NYC Detectives who were trying to connect the dots as to the why. We spoke extensively with them. This was way before LGBT folks had a semblance of Humanity-40 years ago. The subject of Homosexuality came up in the exchange and they treated it as a normal aspect and at all times we never got any vibe from them that our Chinese Gay American’s friends life was forth less than ours. They had a job to do and eventually caught the scum and our friend’s death was part of a gang initiation. An otherwise, a respectable experience to a tragic event.

Fast forward and we live on an Old Farm in Pennsylvania(Alabama) and things can’t be more opposite. We believe our police can’t go more out of their way to not do their job and ridicule our concerns. We can’t even get reported bullet holes investigated in our property. We stopped calling them to report crimes but we still document events just in case. It saddens me to say that any respect for Law Enforcement doesn’t exist at this time. We wish we felt otherwise.
I suspect your experience is the norm and hopefully it remains that way. Thanks for your perspective.

        • Cackalaquiano

I’m so sorry this is what you’re dealing with. I wish I had some sage advice for you.

          • Jerry Kott
