Schumer Caught On Hot Mic: Trump Likes Me [VIDEO]

Talking Points Memo reports:

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) was heard saying Thursday morning that President Donald Trump “likes us” and that “it’s going to work out,” perhaps referring to a potential deal shielding young undocumented people from deportation. The comment was picked up by a CSPAN microphone and broadcast live.

“He likes us!” Schumer is heard saying, referring to Trump. “He likes me, anyway.” “Look, what we said was exactly accurate,” Schumer continues. “Here’s what I told him. I said, Mr. President, you’re much better off if you can sometimes step right, and sometimes step left. If you have to step just in one direction, you’re boxed. He gets that.”

  • Ragnar Lothbrok

    Not even shocked

    • Gustav2

Projecting you have the ear of even a shitty president helps keep your position as minority leader.

  • zhera

“You like me. You really like me!”

  • Lazycrockett

It all boils down to who strokes his ego last.

    • tbj5

      Its called dementia

    • zhera

You also need the right spin. Make sure he thinks it’s a good thing for him personally, nevermind the country, the world, the universe.

    • Frostbite

      So glad you typed ego..

  • Jonathan Smith
  • TuuxKabin

Oh for fuck sake chuckie, it’s not a goddamned two step.

    • GayOldLady

It’s a waltz honey and chuckie is going to dance him right into leaving office or being impeached.

      • TuuxKabin

        hopefully the last waltz.

        • GayOldLady

I’m having a really hard time being patient too, but this is not going to end well for Trump. Any kind of compromise that Schumer & Pelosi can get out of him, is a point for our team.

          • TuuxKabin

They do have experience on their side, and no matter what, I have to keep hoping they may slay the dragon, if it doesn’t implode on its own. Sigh.

  • Tawreos

Someone monitor Breitbart for the explosion once they find out their hero likes a liberal.

    • GayOldLady

They’ve been exploding at Breitbart for a few days. They’re all in a dither that their messiah is consorting with the enemy and not going to build their goddamned wall. Ever since he went with Schumer and Pelosi on the debt ceiling deal they’ve been in a meltdown.

      • The_Wretched

The ‘Trump wall’ is fundamentally ridiculous. Any efforts to make it are doomed to fail for very basic engineering reasons. All that leaves is graft and posturing reasons to even try.

  • metrored

Everyone thinks they know how to manipulate King Joffrey…

  • GayOldLady

If we can get the help of president nincompoop to protect DACA, why not take it? He’s not going to be POTUS much longer, so anything we can get out of him that’s to our advantage is what we should take.

    • PickyPecker

Hey, doll. Shall we meet up at the WaffleHouse today?

    • Cipher

TRUMP: Chuck, Nancy… You guys can work with me. Pence, not so much. Let’s dance.

[Chuck and Nancy stare at each other thinking, “Is this a Russian tune? Let’s see what we can extract from this clown…before, you know, Mueller”]

      Chuckles: New Yorkers rule!
Nancy: I don’t like Mika’s facelift either… Ivanka is such a smart young woman!

    • Gerry Fisher

Absolutely take that deal. But don’t *ever* make the mistake of thinking that tRump likes you. He’s not capable of normal human relationships other than manipulation.

      • GayOldLady

  • EdA

Offhand, I would suggest that Schumer is far from naive and certainly knows Benedict Trump from way back. I wonder if he “accidentally” let the absurd comment slip to fake the quisling out.

  • bkmn

Schumer really knows how to piss off the GOP, especially the far right

    • another_steve

I assume their hollow heads are steaming, over there on Breitbart.

  • JWC

Don’t be stupid Schumer Trump likes Trump. No one else. Never has Never will

  • another_steve

    Too delicious for words, this.

Alienate the Breitbart freaks. Divide the Republican rank and file.

    I’m happy today.

    • safari

Most of Breitbart today is one gloom and doom article after another.

      • Jonathan Smith

        turn around is fair play.
their turn to be bitchy 🙂
        i can cope

  • The_Wretched

accident / not accident? I hope he’s trolling.

    • Cuberly

      twisting the knife?

      • coram nobis

    • Gerry Fisher

I dunno about Schumer. I haven’t been impressed with him.

  • ultragreen

Continue to be ‘nice’ to him, Schumer and Pelosi. Maybe a few things can be salvaged from the disaster of the Trump presidency after all.

  • bambinoitaliano

I’m wary of Schumer type of politician. He will sell his soul in a second just like the republicans if it benefits him. We should not fall asleep whatever deals he seems to think he could strike with the bigger con man.

    • He has a completely consistent progressive voting record in the U.S. Senate, up there with Sanders. So no, he does not sell out on votes. When he was in Congress he was also one of the most progressive Democrats (read liberal) around. He also lives in fairly non-affluent conditions in Brooklyn (he has lived in the same apartment building for years). You can trust him. He has also never lost an election, he is loved by his constituents. In 2014, the Free Beacon rated him one of the most progressive Senators — Every other list I have seen rates him as one of the most progressive.

      • TuuxKabin

        Not all he isn’t.

        • You have to admit — he has done a pretty good job of keeping both his centrist and liberal wings together — unanimously – and getting McCain onboard to stop the efforts to overturn ACA — this year. He has stymied MCConnell on every turn it seems. he appointed Warren and Sanders to his leadership team — they backed him to replace Reid. He is definitely progressive, although some left Democrat groups consider him too “old fashioned Democrat” and too “establishment” (and some other things we will left unmentioned) for their tastes.

      • Girlgoon

I’m a native of Brooklyn and Chuck has been a local hero of sorts for a long time. Politics is a balancing act, you can’t please all of the people all of the time. To get through a political impasse it’s sometimes necessary to compromise. To evaluate a politician we should look at the big picture.

    • CanuckDon

Those were genuine tears when Schumer spoke up about Trump’s first attempt at a travel ban. Those on the Right love to mock us liberals for our compassion towards others.

    • Cipher

If he can get DACA into law, I will measure him by and credit him for the accomplishment. I just do not see “The Wall” happening. Trump is boxed in.

  • Rex

Cause most times he steps in shit.

  • Mike C

“Caught”. The trap is set. Watch the GOP fall right into it.

  • JWC

all politicians are poker players at best Schumer is no slippery than the rest and more slippery that many others

  • Bluto
    • PickyPecker
    • The_Wretched

Part of the Cookie Monster make over? Violence leads to healthy eating? The apotheosis of the unsavory practice of anthropomorphized food? West-side Story re-imagined? Botticelli’s less imaginative great great great great…great grand kid?

      so many questions.

      • safari

Diet and exercise fighting obesity, I think.

    • clay

      The Twinkie Defense.

  • Oh HE knows there was a hot mic. He knows exactly what he is doing. Chuck Schumer??? Try playing poker with him and see if you still own your house when you are finished.

    • GayOldLady

I love poker and the objective in playing well is to never be predictable and to take calculated risks. I think Schumer is all over this like a fly on poop.

      • Cuberly

There was an excellent Big Think video the other day. Going into the lessons you can learn from poker, as well as how and why to play it a certain way.

        • GayOldLady

Thanks Cub, I’ll check that out.

          • Cuberly

            No prob.

It’s interesting watching it after Schumer & Pelosi’s recent gambit. Can see the GOP flummoxed in their own confirmation bias thinking Donnie is supposed to act a certain way, unable to react. Pelosi and Schumer ignoring prior information as a means to move forward with the information, or hand, they currently have to play with.

          • GayOldLady

Totally agree. You can only play the hand you’ve been dealt. The GOP keeps waiting for the Dems to go into their corner and refuse to work with Trump on things that are in the countries best interest. The Dems aren’t going to play the hand the way that the GOP played against Obama because they saw that it didn’t work and left the GOP at the mercy of ideologues and unable to govern. The GOP has so diminished it’s power by trying to stop Obama at every turn that they lost their ability to negotiate, they can’t even negotiate with their own far right members, The Freedom Caucus. They need the Dems to pass any legislation which gives the Dems immense bargaining power. For all the bad-mouthing of Pelosi she can herd cats better than any Minority Leader in recent memory. Paul Ryan on the other hand can do absolutely nothing was his caucus because it is so fragmented and ideological. I just hope that the Dems continue to leverage their power effectively.

          • Cuberly

            Yep, excellent synopsis.

  • coram nobis

In other Democratic Party news, Hillary compares herself to Cersei Lannister.

A rather unfortunate simile, especially since Hillary has yet to, say, commit incest, although I suppose she did give birth to a nasty king.

She’s not Denise Teagarden either. So I suppose the GOT similes won’t stick.

  • JerryRich

Chuck and Nancy are welcome to give He, Trump as much of this as possible.

  • safari
    • clay

So, if Jeffy resigned, why’s he still there?

    • bambinoitaliano

Yet he still stay on. Next!

      • Karl Dubhe

        The resignation was refused.

I’d have fucking well walked, but shittons wants to stay on in a job where he’s humiliated.

    • Cuberly

“…the most humiliating experience in decades of public life.”

Wow, you know you’re an unrepentant racist when donnie slappin ya down is the worst experience of your life.

      • thatotherjean

I’ll bet getting reamed for doing exactly the right thing–recusing yourself because you’re involved in “the Russia thing” and letting Rosenstein take over, which permitted Rosenstein to appoint Mr. Mueller–stung quite a bit, though. Jeff is a racist, but Trump is an idiot.

  • Cuberly

It’s like the GOP doesn’t have any political capacity. They obstructed and gerrymandered and what’s it got them? They’ve been left with a vacuum of earned political talent.

I bet that questionable beer bash celebration the house pulled after they attempted to gut the ACA is sticking to them like moldy dregs right about now. Sure seems like the fail has been rather strong ever since.

  • Mark McGovern
  • netxtown

    oh look. donnie like’s us….

  • clay

    . . . and this is why I’m not a Democrat.

  • Rick Jackson

Even if it is true that Tramp likes you he still likes himself and power much, much more. Go ahead make a deal with the devil. You will get burned and probably get little crap on yourself. A little clue – you know he is lying if his lips are moving or he is expressing himself in some other fashion

  • Gerry Fisher

Freaking idiot, Schumer. Trump likes you if you reflect or enable his glory. The minute that doesn’t happen, you’ll be kicked to the curb, mocked, or ignored. What the hell is it with these arrogant people in power who think they can control tRump?! The inability to learn from evidence–years and years of evidence–is maddening.

  • margaretpoa

    You’re a fucking idiot, Chuck.

  • thatotherjean

Oh, Chuck, no. That was yesterday. You can’t rely on anything Trump said, or even thought, yesterday being true today. Don’t believe a word of it.

  • edrex

    is schumer trolling trump?

    • thatotherjean

I hope so, but I don’t see what good will come of it.

    • AJayne

I think he’s trolling (R)s. “See, he thinks you guys are idiots; he *Ilikes* us!”

Unable to determine vocal inflection in the written word, but I can sure see that being his point.

  • MBear

  • I love dim sum

This is why I started voting Green Party. The Democratic Party is just as bad as Trump, except they pretend to like LGBT people.

  • Gianni

Trump is 71 years old and they have to guide and urge and maneuver him like a preteen.

    • BearEyes

the problem being that he acts on what the topic was with the last person spoken with.

  • Tom Mears

    I wonder how “…accidentally caught…” Chuck was?

  • Ish

    • leastyebejudged

He’s not a fool, he did this purposely.

Republicans are coming unglued, it’s awesome.

  • Bob Conti

Well played Chuck, nothing will cause the rabble to turn on Hair Furor faster than his getting into bed with those libruls!

  • JCF

WANT to like this. Seriously. But it make me nervous. Chuck and Nancy, you DO know THERE ARE ***NO*** DEALS RE RUSSIA??? None? As in Zero? Not until AFTER he’s convicted and removed/removed and convicted anyway???

I don’t care if Drumpf “Goes Full Bernie”…we CANNOT make a deal re the subversion of our democracy!!!!

  • jonfromcalifornia

Pathetic! And this is a Democratic “leader”? No wonder we keep losing elections.

  • Oh, Parker
