REPORT: Sheriff’s Deputy Tells High School Students “My Bible Tells Me All Faggots Will Burn In Hell” [VIDEO]

From the Facebook page of Nicholas County Democrats:

On Tuesday morning, September 5th, 2017, an openly gay student from Clay County High School in Clay, West Virginia, boarded the school bus of part-time driver, Robert Belt, and sat down beside another student.

Allegedly, Robert Belt, also a full-time Clay County Sheriff Deputy, dressed in full uniform, announced over the bus PA system, “No faggot activity will be permitted on this bus. In my Bible it states that ‘faggots will burn in Hell,’ and I will not condone it.”

On Friday, September 8th, 2017, a Clay County high school parent learned of the incident and voiced her concerns to the Clay County High School Vice Principal, Alan Tanner. Initially, Vice Principal Tanner stated, “I don’t know what you are talking about,” however, when pressed Principal Tanner said that he had reported the incident to the Clay County Director of Transportation, Jared Fitzwater.

The concerned parent discovered from the victim Leslie Osborne, Clay County school counselor, had taken three statements from students present on the bus. Currently, Deputy Robert Belt continues to drive for the Clay County School system and is continuing to perform his official duties as Clay County Sheriff Deputy.

More from Huntington’s NBC affiliate:

The county school system has launched an investigation after learning about allegations against a bus driver. Clay County community members tell WSAZ the school bus driver used a gay slur when referring to a student who was on the bus. Superintendent Joe Paxton said he first learned of the allegations when the high school reported the incident in question to the board.

Superintendent Paxton’s entire written statement reads: “In response to the media’s request for a statement, please know that administration is prohibited from going into detail regarding these preliminary allegations. I can state that administration is investigating the allegations, and will do so thoroughly, all while complying with applicable laws and policies that govern the process. Administration always takes allegations of this nature serious, and in doing so, administration takes the investigation serious versus rushing to prejudgment.”

In other (more understandable) words — exactly nothing will be done about it, nor come from it.

    • S1AMER

Yep. We’re talking West Virginia here, so the driver might just get a bonus.

      • bambinoitaliano

He is definitely getting a huge boner for the attention shower at him

        • edrex

“huge” might be a little ambitious.

I love this movie. It is one of my favorite movies.

    • Nothing of consequence. The school officials will make a half hearted apology to students and parents, some personnel will be shuffled around, and everything will go on like it always did. Imagine if an atheist working for the state announced that there was no god and religious people were all deluding themselves. Now I happen to believe that, but it would be completely inappropriate to use such a platform to make such a statement. I know that. Why don’t fundamentalist Christians understand that?

      • cleos_mom

They’ll express themselves as regretful that any “faggots, dykes or trannies” were offended. And then throw in come kind of reference to “witnessing” and “salvation.”

        • vorpal 😼

“I’m sorry that you were offended by what I said,” is like saying, “I’m sorry that you didn’t like being burnt when I doused you in gasoline and lit you on fire.”

          • cleos_mom

            And another possible subtext:

“I’m not a bit sorry I said that. I just regret that I got a negative response.”

      • vorpal 😼

        Just imagine:
“No Christian bullshit is allowed on this bus. I think that Christians are all deluded idiots and I won’t tolerate it.”

You’d be fired before you even got to the next bus stop.

        • Ninja0980

And Fox News with homocons like Guy Benson would be screaming about an attack on Christians for weeks.

          • vorpal 😼

While their mental health might be terrible, there’s certainly nothing wrong with their lungs.

        • It’s worse than that though. Imagine if there were some slur equivalent to faggot and you used that to demean the Christians riding the bus.

          • vorpal 😼

I was actually thinking that and how we don’t really have a good slur term for Christians. The closest I could think of is Christers or Christianists, but that doesn’t come anywhere near “faggot.”

          • Because it doesn’t carry any weight with it. It’s like “honky”. I know that’s a slur but it’s just not offensive because it doesn’t carry the weight of bigotry and abuse. If the people who used that word had lynched people who looked like me for decades and burnt crosses in our front yards maybe, but that’s not the history.

As for Christianist, that’s not a slur. It’s an attempt to distinguish between Christians and the radical, bigoted and sometimes sometimes violent version of that religion, like Muslims vs Islamists.

          • vorpal 😼

            Agree 100%.

And the thing is, there has been no serious effort amongst the LGBT community or the other minority group victims of Christians TO come up with a hateful, bigoted, derogatory slur for them.

I like to think that it’s because despite their self-proclaimed monopoly on morality, we’re far more civilized and empathic towards our fellow humans, as evidenced by our rejection of holding up 2000+ year old barbaric, violent, homicidal “morals” as the pinnacle of human achievement.

When you are amongst a minority group targeted by a majority group, you may become defensive and firm in demanding equality, but you do not become cruel and inhumane as you’re forced to see how horrible a mob mentality can be and how much language can be used to hurt and oppress others.

          • perversatile

I still remember with much fondness, my boyfriend Chip,
back in 11th grade, yelling at the Christians picketing
            Jean-Luc Godard’s ‘Hail Mary’-
“Yeah I love Jesus too, but you don’t see me sucking his
dick & waving signs around trying to get people to watch.”.

          • vorpal 😼

Makes me think about how much some Christians are into putting on elaborate and very revolting PDAs expressing their love for Jesus that often demean others, but when we LGBT people even hold hands in public, it is a “political act” and an abomination deserving of scorn and legal repercussions.

One of the many reasons I am glad to be LGBT is that it helped me overcome my Christian indoctrination and develop empathy and compassion, even if I do like to occasionally – amongst good company – indulge a little childishness towards the majority that have tried to oppress us.

In real life, I am friends with a lot of Christians – even a few fundamentalist ones – and we have come to places of great understanding between us, even if we have engaged in some pretty heated discussions. I try my best to learn from those and be forgiving and understanding, and usually am met with the same in return, fortunately.

I am jealous that you had a boyfriend in 11th grade! I didn’t even knowingly meet another gay person until I was almost 19, and would have done anything to not feel so alienated, alone, and terrified as a teenager. That sentiment is what pushes me to try to do what little I can to make the world a better place for younger LGBT generations.

once, β€œEven with the happiest couples, one of you dies first.” But first
            there is such unalloyed joy.
We went to the supermarket yesterday and we were wandering around and,at one point, he took my hand, because that’s the kind of thing he does. And instantly, I got flustered. Residual anxiety. Remembrance of past battery. Enduring scars. Even though I know I’m hardly likely to get my head kicked in by the salad bar, PDAs can still make me nervous. And
then he said, gentle as anything, and I’m not going to do the accent…
β€œIf there’s a gay kid in here with his folks, frightened that he’s a
freak, don’t you think that it might give him hope, seeing two guys
wandering around, being themselves, getting their groceries, like

          • vorpal 😼

            Lovely, and perfectly said.

I was having a discussion with our one anti-SSM Christian member over on the LGBT news and opinion site, SlowlyBoiledFrog, and addressing the difference between an LGBT person and what he termed an “LGBT radical activist.”

I am convinced that it is mostly the anti-LGBT crowd who create the concept of an “LGBT radical activist” by interpreting our actions – such as perfectly normal PDAs that would be not given a thought when done by heterosexuals, and our responding to discrimination – as political ones instead of recognizing that they are simply human ones.

They long for the days when LGBT people were forced to live quiet, desperate, sad lives of fear and remain in hiding so as to avoid mocking and the very real possibility of physical harm.

I know when my first boyfriend tried to hold my hand in public back in 1997, I just about died of shame and terror. And when a guy I dated briefly in 2004 gave me a quick goodbye kiss when my bus arrived at the bus stop, again, a wave of fear spread across me. But that second time, I decided that this was something I needed to and deserved to overcome, because I have the right to live openly and honestly and to hopefully in my own very small way change society so that future generations of LGBT people can live with less fear and feelings of isolation.

            =grins=
I have never met a single gay guy named Chip, so I am impressed that you’ve dated two!

            Gotta add:

No one “knows” what happens or doesn’t happen after death. People of all beliefs will insist to you that their belief is The One Great Exception to that, but that exception doesn’t exist.

Yeah, believers will tell you that Jesus died & came back. Even if he was advanced enough as a soul to do that, he evidently didn’t disclose any details. And with near-death experiences, there’s that near part. The best for any of us to do is arrive at the conclusion that makes the most sense to us.

          • perversatile

I don’t think I’ll bother contemplating an afterlife, until after I’m dead.

      • Rebecca Gardner

Homosexuality is as much a choice as Heterosexuality, but we know that. How is it that so many adults don’t?

        • Todd20036

Because they don’t like to think. Good is white, evil is black.

Gender is fixed, orientation is fixed.

You have men, women, and straight sex to make babies.

Everyone who claims ANYTHING else is a liar, and any other possibilities are merely evil choices a few sinners make.

There is good, and bad. Everything that is Good is Christian and American. Everything that is bad is everything else.

RWNJs hate thinking, so no gray areas allowed. And no scientific facts are allowed unless they support your conclusions.

      • jerry

Their bible logic generally consisted of quoting Leviticus, and it had to be a choice because “god doesn’t make mistakes”.

        • Librarykid

Maybe not, but there are plenty of mistakes in translating and interpreting the Bible.

          • jerry

Their god should have hired better translators, and shouldn’t have waited 1500 years until all concept of context was lost.

          • Librarykid

Amen, you should pardon the expression. I was reading something this morning about a discussion of capital punishment in the Talmud. The point was made that the text about stoning people was from primitive herders and wanderers and the rabbis of the Talmud were more civilized and from centuries later; telling in itself. Then the real kicker was uttered. It seems that after the Temple was destroyed, the rabbis and their courts had no power to sentence anyone to death because the Sanhedrin was not there for appeals. So killing anyone for any crime was instantly moot. Other punishments were a possibility, but not capital punishment. This is further proof of the abysmal ignorance and evil of these religious peddlers of hate. Fucking hate-filled yahoos.

          • jerry

I’ve also read, from different sources, that stoning wasn’t generally capital punishment, but more of a banishment. In other words, if you just stood there while people continued to throw rocks, it would kill you. But it was mostly throwing rocks at someone until they got the hell out of town.

          • (((GC)))

Some of the penalties in the Bible, IIRC, do explicitly say to stone the person with stones until they die.

But as Librarykid alluded to, later rabbinic Judaism ending up reinterpreting the death penalty virtually out of existence.

      • Ninja0980

I worry about the closeted kids, and even the sensitive straight kids, on that bus, as well. They’ve just been told that they shouldn’t even have same-sex friends. Homophobia hurts us, and it hurts others, as well.

    • Also, what is “faggot stuff” on the bus? Are they giving blowjobs or something? But if that were the case that rule should apply to opposite sex activity as well. No, this was directed at one student that he assumed (rightly in this case) was gay. That’s bullying.

      • cleos_mom

Although you regularly hear cutesy assertions that “it’s freedom of religion, not freedom from religion.” Whether you believe in a Supreme Being or not, that second part has to be included or freedom of religion doesn’t exist.

We need to drag Deputy Robert Belt we gotta drag him good.

Okay I called the Sheriff. The guy who answered siad they are getting quite a few phone calls. The Sheriff he says does not have voice mail so he took a message. Of course I complained about what Deputy Bent did and said I also complained that he was wearing his full Sheriffs Deputy Uniform as a bus driver. He was not being paid as a school guard but rather as a bus driver. I said he could not get a part time job at target and wear his sheriffs uniform and do cashier work. I asked him if he knows Robert Bent, he said he did, I asked him if he liked Robert Bent he said he does like him. I objected to him taking the phone calls from the community I said since he likes Robert Bent they should assign a neutral party to take the phone calls, like Human Resources. He said they do not have human resources at the Sheriffs Dept. I said the County must have a Human Resources Dept, he said Clay County does NOT have human Resources Dept. So what is the chance that my complaint gets written up correctly and handed to the Sheriff?

Anti Gay Bigotry and Discrimination is bad enough when done to adults, but when they come after children we gotta stand up FOR the children, we gotta stand for them, we gotta stand with them. NO MORE BULLYING OF LGBT KIDS! Enough is ENOUGH!

          • StraightGrandmother

I’m going to call the school district and insist that they not permit Robert Bent to wear his sheriffs uniform as a BUS DRIVER. It is intimidating to children and affords him as a BUS DRIVER more authority that the position affords.

          • bambinoitaliano

StraightGrandmother, you are one of my heroes!

      • StraightGrandmother

Oh yeah baby, assholes like this, this ain’t his first rodeo,

December 10, 2009 CHARLESTON – Following two years of alleged harassment and brutality at the hands of a sheriff’s deputy, a Clay County man has filed a lawsuit to stop it.

Clay County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Belt is named as a co-defendant in an eight-count civil rights lawsuit filed by Robert Morton in U.S. District Court in Charleston. Morton’s suit also names Jeff Ryder, another deputy, Clay County Sheriff Randy Holcomb and the Clay County Commission as co-defendants.

In his complaint filed on Nov. 9, Morton alleges Belt repeatedly harassed him, including making repeated stops for traffic violations that led to no citations or arrests. The harassment, Morton alleges, stems from a request he made of Belt to refrain from staining his carpet during a visit to his home in November 2007.

        Request leads to beating
According to his suit, Holcomb instructed Belt and Ryder to go to Morton’s home in Maysel on Nov. 14, 2007, to retrieve personal items belonging to one his children who was residing with his ex-wife. Holcomb informed Morton that Belt, who is related to Morton’s ex-wife by marriage, and Ryder would be at his home around 3:30 p.m.

However, Belt and Ryder did not arrive at Morton’s home until 9:40 p.m. Upon their arrival, Morton alleges he went into his bedroom, sat on his bed and “politely asked them to remove their boots so as not to stain the white carpet in his home.”

Though Ryder complied, Belt did not. Belt, the suit alleges, became enraged, and retorted ” ‘F-ck you and your white carpet.'”

I think we are missing the point with this. Yes, all of you are correct on the Constitutional underpinnings of this incident, but this is not really an instance of a man proselytizing in government space…or not only such an incident. What we REALLY have here is an authoritarian figure…a bully… imposing his will on a group of helpless kids who have no way to resist. If this asshole can’t get adults to follow his Biblical imperatives, then he’ll just find some helpless people to impose his will on and to persecute.

    They have the simple facts.
It is time to fire the driver’s ass for preaching hateful religious crap to the students on a public school bus.
Fire the driver to protect the children and to warn any other public school employee from ever doing this again.

    • Pip

He’s also a full time sheriff’s deputy. Time to investigate his dealings on the force too. You can’t tell me someone who feels justified in trying to intimidate and verbally abuse a kid is an upstanding officer when dealing with adults out on the streets.

People will defend the bible and say that it doesn’t say those horrible things, but it does say them. The thing is, the bible is crap. It a vile book of horror stories about a sadistic monster god who’s even more vain and heartless than Trump.

  • Natty Enquirer

What a horrible thing to say! He must be guilty! Fire him!

Justice, like revenge, is best served cold and not roasted over the flames of emotion. I can certainly imagine some hick bus driver would behave this way. I can also imagine three kids could concoct a story to frame a driver they don’t like. This is why an investigation is taking place.

    • RoFaWh

      You are wrong.

In my experience, kids are pretty honest, but fat alcoholic losers lie a lot.

    • anne marie in philly

      FUCK YOU, NATTY!

    • coram nobis

Then let’s see what the school-district investigation produces. Given the number of kids on the bus as witnesses, something will come out. The internal-affairs unit at the Sheriff’s Department can also put their nose in.

There’s always the possibility of a civil suit by the kid’s parents, and evidentiary discovery.

    • The_Wretched

I agree rushing to judgment and knee jerking is bad – especially so when it comes to removing someone’s employment. However, this guy seems to have a rather sorded history of being violent and abusive and the community is over the top with religous zealotry. They kind of infraction also goes to fitness for the occupation. As such, it’s not vengeance to say he needs to be removed from the job.

It doesn’t bother to consider whether it said something completely different yesterday, or even five minutes ago. And it doesn’t consider what its needs might be tomorrow. And it never, never, ever tries to consider how its statements might reflect any sort of overall world view.
There’s also the question of how Dump decides what its wants and needs are, but I’m at work and don’t have the time or inclination to go any further. I’ll just say that my college classes in Psychology are coming in handy.

    • Cackalaquiano

Agreed. But some parents are much more ashamed of their kids than outraged by such an incident. Life in a small isolated place with few opportunities can really warp one’s perspective.
I’m not making excuses though. Your reaction is absolutely right.

      • barrixines

Look I am not a tough guy and would likely come off worse but I am fiercely protective of my loved ones. I know what it’s like to be that kid – as we all do – and hear that sort of hateful stuff from people in authority. And as a kid I always stood up to those adults particularly in school and it caused me a lot of problems. But I wouldn’t be honouring the boy I was not to do the same thing now as a man.

Homphobia is like tinnitus – it’s the constant drone in every LGBT person’s life. You cannot not hear it and it takes a cast iron psychological constitution to render that noise harmless. Lots of our kids don’t make it. It’s the duty of all of us to make sure as many of them do as possible.

It’s stifling for any kid when you live in a rural area and your ENTIRE world is just so small. But for a gay/lesbian kid in a West Virginia holler? I want them to have some hope.

  • Galvestonian

… and people wonder why you would want to live in West Virginia — Oh don’t get me wrong – it’s beautiful in it’s own way and has some really terrific places to visit and some of the scenery can’t be equaled but it’s that stubborn bigotry and suspicion of education that terrifies one. I lived there for 5 years and couldn’t wait to get the hell out.

    • Well, I grew up in the Maryland suburbs of DC, then moved to West Virginia after having just started 10th grade. And YES, it was a real culture shock. But I have been here ever since, and I don’t anticipate going anywhere else (unless I was swept off my feet by someone elsewhere). Like anyplace else, West Virginia has it’s positives and its negatives. But we DO have a very vocal and active LGBT community that I’ve been involved with for over 25 years.

      • jerry

The political scene has definitely changed for the worse, going down the GOP idiot hole. It used to be mainly a contest between progressive and conservative Democrats. Even Clay Co. used to have a fairly progressive circuit judge in the 1990s. And the county prosecutor at one time was a Rhodes Scholar, a friend of mine I knew from WVU (she was also black, and had served as Secretary of Arts and Education under Gov. Caperton).

Just by comparison, here’s a story in today’s SF Chronicle about a young family settling in West Oakland. The fact that it’s two guys and a 15-month-old child comes out sounding routine, even pleasant; the article is more about gentrification.

    http://www.sfchronicle.com/news/article/Contented-family-in-changing-West-Oakland-with-12192803.php

I recently visited the Station House townhome Fernandez bought with his husband, Nick Williams, and their 15-month-old son, Rio. They moved in in February.

As Williams, who teaches third grade at Cragmont Elementary School in Berkeley, made angel hair pasta with cherry tomatoes, spinach, garlic and sausage for dinner, Rio galloped across the floor. He was hungry.

β€œOh, buddy, it’s almost ready. Chill out,” Williams, 34, said to Rio.

(Otis Taylor, Jr. is the paper’s East Bay (Oakland/Richmond) columnist, always interesting, sometimes denunciatory about what he sees).

Ah! I love when my state makes it in the national news. Unfortunately it is always crap like this. I grew up in the county next to this and thought mine was a vile place, good to be in second place.
