FLORIDA: Media Attention During Hurricane Boosts Likelihood Rick Scott Will Challenge Sen. Bill Nelson

The Hill reports:

Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) handling of Hurricane Irma has boosted his profile ahead of an expected Senate bid. Scott is term-limited out of the governor’s mansion, and Republicans, including President Trump, have urged him to consider challenging Sen. Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) next year. His aggressive approach to Irma, which saw him order an extensive evacuation ahead of the storm and coordinate disaster relief efforts as the storm came ashore, has sent his political stock even higher.

Before Irma, Scott’s ability to respond to a hurricane had gone mostly untested, with Florida avoiding a major storm for his entire term. But the governor’s preparedness has impressed Republicans and some Democrats, all of whom have long expected Scott to challenge Nelson next year. In the days before Irma cut across the state this past weekend, Scott was a constant presence on Florida televisions, urging more than 7 million residents to evacuate.

He should be in prison for Medicare fraud

    Fuck off, skeletor

    o/t

this is really worth a read

“I shared my thoughts of the last three centuries of challenges from white
supremacists, white nationalists, KKK, Nazis. So there’s no way to find
an equilibrium when you have three centuries of history versus the
    situation that is occurring today.”

Have they annoited him gay yet

    • j.martindale

No, but we ought to. That would kill his Senatorial hopes.

  • Mark Née Fuzz

Has Trump called to congratulate him on the bump in his fame?

  • Michael

Only in Florida can you have a governor who is obviously bat sh!t crazy.

    • Ross

Only in America can you have a President who is obviously bat shit crazy, too.

    • William

Texas broke that rule years ago.

      • Paula

Yeah! I was gonna’ tell him don’t forget Texas. We have a real looney bunch running the state now.

  • AtticusP
    • Todd Allis

I would vote Bat Boy over Rick Scott.

        • John30013

Thanks! I remember he used to have tv specials in the 70s and early 80s.

  • Gregory Mullins

He’s technically “term limited”….There is no lifetime limit on the number of times he or she may be elected, but a governor who has been elected to two consecutive terms must be out of office for at least one election cycle before being eligible once again for re-election. Article 4 section 5 of the Florida Constitution.

    • Gregory Mullins

Sorry. . .misread the article. . .they want him to run for Senate against Nelson because he is term-limited. . .OY. . .Reading is fundamental. LOL

  • OdieDenCO

I can’t see his ordering what any sane official would have ordered outweighing his past performance. one atta a boy doesn’t offset 10 aw shits.

    • JW Swift

Yes, but this is Florida. Sanity in politics does not apply. And the “good ol’ boy” network is still alive and well.

  • JT
  • Ninja0980

Didn’t want to bring that up with so many people in danger but the fact is he did perform well, and if he runs, I would say how he performed here very well could get him across the finish line the way it couldn’t with Nelson’s two previous challengers.
Shouldn’t be that way but it likely will be.

    • boatboy_srq

Fl has a decent disaster response machine. It’s one reason HEB? was not entirely unpopular in FL despite events like Terri Schaivo. Scott merely inherited a working public entity that even he couldn’t dismantle.

      • Nowhereman

That’s the sort of thing that is frustrating Trump, too. There are some Obama accomplishments that he just can’t get rid of with an executive order.

        • boatboy_srq

Actually FL’s disaster response machine dates back well before that. IIRC Bob Graham and Lawton Chiles pushed for a decent EMA. HEB? benefited from all that, of course, in 2004.

  • Sam_Handwich

someone should let Joe know that the Pharma Douche had his bail revoked and is headed to jail

    • edrex

this one’s for the wu-tang clan (pours splash of g&t on the ground).

      • Adonisus

Wu-Tang ain’t nothin’ to fuck with.

    • Tomcat

No then we will have to look at the pharma douche all night.

    • bambinoitaliano

Pharma Douche, Pharma Douche will he do the cell tango…….

    • JW Swift

      Joe’s on it.

  • Cuberly
    • Natty Enquirer

      Looks like nasty plastic/polymers burning.

      • Cuberly

Yep, cellphones & some solid state drives.

    • Tomcat

How petty of them. Our consulates do the very same thing in other countries.

      • Natty Enquirer

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District does not really give a hoot what U.S. consulates do in other countries. They care about people breaking the law on restricted burning days.

      • Cuberly

Actually it’s not petty. We had an air quality alert that day, it was pretty awful. When that happens you get fined for using a fireplace etc…also we were inundated with smoke blowing in from all the wild fires in the area.

        So the fine is legit.

        • William

Diplomats rarely pay parking tickets. This fine will be added to the ignore pile.

          • Cuberly

            Oh totally….they won’t pay a thing.

          • carrot festival

That’s probably part of what they were burning. Parking tickets.

    • BJORN RAGNVALDR

      Yeah, that’ll learn`em…..

  • TimCA

After the Pulse massacre Scott’s office promised that Scott would sign a LGBT anti-discrimination order for state employees but ultimately he refused to do so. Rick Scott is disingenuous slime.

    • Tomcat

Damn, that might get him elected Senator in Florida. Not the hurricane.

    • JW Swift

No argument here. But none of this will matter to the voters. If Scott and his policies have not directly hurt someone who’s already a right-leaning voter, they will find every reason they can think of to support him.

  • William

    Governors love disasters.

    • Todd20036

      So do republicans.

  • Tomcat

Gee, then he will be able to vote against FEMA’s existence.

      • Todd20036

That isn’t a smirk. Golly gee.

        • greenmanTN

It edges that way toward the end. The smirk will not be denied.

          • JW Swift

To me, with the more conservative haircut and the hair also not all slicked-down, and in a business-like suit, he almost looks respectable (except for the goofy look on his face, in that shot).

Of course, I realize that defendants NORMALLY do that for court, in an attempt to gain extra sympathy points with the judge and/or jury, but still, he does look a lot more human-looking here than in almost any other photo I’ve seen of him.

      • William

He’s going to be sooo popular.

    • greenmanTN
    • Paula

I hope his trial gets delayed for a couple of years, The time in prison might do him some good.

      • Nowhereman

I agree with the sentiment, but I think he’s just waiting for sentencing on the crimes he was found guilty of. But I would love to see him charged for threatening Clinton.

  • Lazycrockett

Way too early to make that move. Let’s see how well the recovery goes.

  • bambinoitaliano

Rick Scott: It is time to talk climate change! I will make sure y’all get evacuating in time to survive. Thank you and good night.
Please Jesus send more storm my way. I need them to stay in power.

  • Tomcat

Does this mean he will reverse his course on global warming and allow employees to say global warming?

  • another_steve

Floridians: Rick Scott is a GLOBAL WARMING DENIER.

His position on the matter – and that of his party – is partially responsible for the severity of the hurricane that just devastated your state.

  • justme

Guess he’s hoping that all the Democratic areas of the state will be under water by the next election..

  • Pohaku

Scott better not do a victory dance so quickly. If people are still homeless and without services or financial help to rebuild, his popularity may plunge quickly. With that much damage I can’t image everyone getting everything they want or quickly. We really haven’t heard from the victims yet as they are too busy with recovery and getting things like electric to get on line to tell us…… only the press and the Republicans are crowing their own praise. Let’s wait to hear from the people who took the punch.

    • Treant

I cannot see how they can possibly service everybody quickly, and every recovery effort turns into a boondoggle.

Governors may love disasters initially, but they bite them in the ass in the long run.

    • Longpole

8 dead in a Hollywood, Florida nursing home as of this morning. There may be additional stories like this in the coming days.

  • JoeMyGod

Very Minor Trivia: 40 years ago when he was a junior member of the Florida legislature, Bill Nelson was the commencement speaker for my high school graduation. My classmates lamented his lack of star power since an astronaut had addressed the previous year’s graduation. I just remember thinking he was cute.

  • Tomcat

Everyone loves a good campaign so lets hire Russia before they do.

  • LesbianTippingHabits

Governor Scott has actually done a very good job with Hurricane Irma thus far.

    • JDS

No, not really. He has only been on TV to spew jingoistic BS. I booed him every time he was on the news. The Weather channel all but sucked his cock.

  • Nowhereman

Not so fast, Florida. Don’t use this one example of good behavior to pawn him off on the whole country!

  • Keith D Plane

    no no no hell no….no

  • Tom Ato

I figured Skeletor would try to parlay the hurricane PR into a presidential run…

  • Talisman

His speeches just confirmed how much of an idiot he is.

  • castaway

This Florida overseas voter says, “Hell No!”

  • JCF

I guess he’s responsible for the nursing home dead today too then. [Not to mention, he will HAVE to be responsible for climate change DENIAL!!!]
