Florida Keys Evacuees Barred From Immediate Return

Reuters reports:

Residents who fled the Florida Keys in anticipation of Hurricane Irma’s wrath were told they could not return to their island homes on Monday, news that angered evacuees anxious to get back to assess the damage.

Authorities reported widespread damage on the archipelago off the tip of southern Florida. At the White House, U.S. Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert said it could take weeks before many residents are able to return.

Miami-Dade police detective Alvaro Zabaleta, speaking on behalf of local officials, urged residents to head to a shelter on the mainland while authorities tried to restore power, water and medical service. Some evacuees who had lingered at a police checkpoint in Florida City all day fumed, telling Zabaleta they needed to return to their houses to check on pets and clean up.

More from the Miami Herald:

The message was loudest coming from the Southernmost City: “We cannot support another mouth in Key West,” City General Manager Jim Scholl said on a conference call with other local, state and federal officials Monday morning. The reason is the city has no power, water or flushing toilets, he said.

Although the situation is more severe in Key West and the Lower Keys, Monroe County in general was not prepared for the rush of people who evacuated in the days prior to Irma’s arrival to return as of Monday, and may not be for at least a few days. “We’re not prepared for the general population,” State Rep. Holly Raschein (R-Key Largo) said during Monday’s call.

CNN reports:

There were conflicting reports about damage to the pipeline that provides drinking water from the mainland, but the Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority issued a statement saying “the transmission main appears to be intact.”

However, the widespread water outages and low water pressure throughout the Keys appear to be a result of problems with smaller distribution systems, the authority said, explaining it had issued a precautionary boil-water notice.

Things were looking so dire that an estimated 10,000 people who rode out the storm in the Keys may require evacuation, the US Department of Defense said. The island chain is home to about 79,000 people.

And from the Washington Post:

The Navy is sending an aircraft carrier to Key West to provide emergency services. An update from Monroe County describes “an astounding recovery effort” taking place in the Florida Keys, where there was no water, power or cellphone service after the storm.

The USS Lincoln aircraft carrier will be anchored off Key West to provide emergency services, and three other Navy vessels are en route. Officials said the National Guard has arrived in the island chain, and state transportation officials have cleared six of 42 bridges as safe for travel. However, roads remain closed because of debris.

  • safari

I’m not for adding more people to a dire situation, but wouldn’t more people make the clean up and recovery go faster?

    • John30013

Only if the infrastructure can support them. It sounds like that’s not the case right now.

    • That_Looks_Delicious

The mayor of Key West said there are no working toilets in the lower keys right now. That alone is a good reason.

I suppose they could air-lift port-a-johns if they’re going to let people in. Or even just for the people that are already there.

      • safari

That would be an issue. I guess I just get caught up in the idea of early 20th century recovery efforts… but they also knew how to do without services.

        • That_Looks_Delicious

Yep. I guess the beach is really just a giant litter box if people aren’t too put off by that.

          • safari

Or everyone already had their own outhouses. Plus there were a lot, lot fewer people back then in hurricane region.

        • zhera

Latrines. When that’s the only option, you get out your shovel and you dig a hole. Unless everything is under water…

        • BearEyes

pee in the bushes and shit in a bucket
Lack of water would be another matter though.

          • safari

I thought that too, at first. But I don’t think that’d work for tens of thousands… and there really is no way to filter people

    • Deviancy Behavir

The more people that are there, the more resources are expended. It’s not like people are coming with trucks and trucks of supplies to replenish the little that they have to give to others. They’re there to go back to what they want to be their normal lives. What do you think would happen if the rest of the population were to comeback and supplies are already limited? It would be worse than anybody could imagine.

    • Nowhereman

No food, no water, no gas, no sewer, unsafe roads, unstable buildings–so no. They need to let the professionals do their jobs first.

      Fuck them.

      • John Boily

Way harsh for folks that didn’t have a destination that accepted pets

        • Mike_in_the_Tundra

So you stay with them or find a different shelter. You have a responsibility for the life of your pets. Before someone asks, I have been through a hurricane.

          • Ross

            Amen, again.

        • zhera

Pets are family. I have very strong feelings about that. If you wouldn’t leave a child behind, then you don’t leave a pet. Simple.

We could always get into detailed theoretical scenarios where even I would accept the choice of leaving them behind. But that’s pointless. In general: Pets are family.

          • Ross

It seems so, but that’s so far back in history that it’s hard to tell.

Riley’s Maltese blood is closer to the present. He’s pretty small, with a silkier coat than most Bichons.

      • another_steve

Some people simply shouldn’t be caregivers for dogs.

Summers here in Maryland can be awful. A closed-up car left in the sun can easily reach an interior temperature of 120 degrees or so. Yet it’s not uncommon to see a dog left waiting in the car as a thoughtless human does shopping or something, car window left open two inches or so.

Makes me sick when I see that.

        • Silver Badger

Here in Colorado it’s not uncommon for car windows to be broken and the animal rescued. I’ve done so myself and have seen others do the same thing.

          • Nychta

Here in AZ the law protects passers-by who break a car window to save a pet or child from heat death.

          • Silver Badger

            As it should be.

        • bzrd

in California, it’s illegal to leave a dog in the car

I fucking hate seeing dogs chained and tethered for life. We’re in the process of passing a law against tethering.

        • ColdCountry

I’ve been in a situation where I had a dog that couldn’t come in the house, but she got lots of attention and we went for long walks several times a week. It’s certainly not ideal, but it’s better, at least I think maybe, than a dog that is just let out the door to go play in traffic, or chase skunks, or porcupines, or deer. The last being a shoot-able offense here.

      • ColdCountry

God damn! Houston and Detroit seem to be places where some people consider pets to be disposable. Maybe its the tv shows about animal police that come out of there…but those shows are situated there for a reason. I remember one memorable show where the horses on a ranch were left to starve. They were so desperate they tried to eat their stall. I hope the owners got a decade in jail with forced calorie restriction, but who knows.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

Fish and coral can be surprisingly resilient. My aquarium, 2″ cast acryllic with a 1.5″ engineered wood base could handle the compressive force of the two floors above it coming down on top of it. Oxygen exchange would contunue even without electricity. Some stuff would surely survive, trying to take it in an evac situation would cause more damage.

I was asking the same thing. What kind of person leaves their pets behind to weather a Cat 4 or Cat 5 hurricane and 1) thinks they’ll survive that, and 2) that they think they’ll just be able to get back home like nothing happened two days later?

Note: The only exception regarding pets is if authorities force people to leave without their pets which did happen during Harvey.

        • SoCalGal20

Oh that’s nice. Hopefully that’s good news.

      • Nychta

During the 80s-early 90s when I lived in Wisconsin, people would be forced to leave their animals behind during evacuations (usually due to tornado damage or power outages during the winter). There was a big public uproar, and since then evacuation protocols have become more humane. I couldn’t imagine leaving my animal friends behind. I’d rather go down with the ark.

      • Skeptical_Inquirer

I think it’s the same type of thinking people do when they dump pets in woods & parks they no longer want. One of the reasons is they have to get structural engineers to asses the roads and bridges for safety, but they also have to do it with homes and structures. If people go back and their home isn’t structurally sound, they will be potentially barred from habitation. Unfortunately takes time.

The people bitching about not being able to go back to their homes are some of the dumbest fucking people. They’re lucky that they weren’t hit harder than some other areas, especially in the caribbean. I saw utility crews from Colorado on I-10 today near Baton Rouge and tree trimming crews from OK / MO on the interstate around Gulfport. The east bound crew caravan the made me chuckle was one from FL heading back east from TX.
Post Katrina we had utility crews from WA/OR/ME/NH. It was an all hands on deck deal, like this one is. There wasn’t this kind of mobilization after Harvey. I guess because it wasn’t wind / surge but gradual flooding that did them in.

i’ve always thought September is probably a good time to go to Disney, with kids being back at school. but the problem with that has always been that my (work) life suddenly gets complicated in Sept. grrrr.

        • Ninja0980

Hubby and I have gone a couple of times there.
Pretty quiet for the most part but since no other park besides the Magic Kingdom gets in on the act for Halloween, we like it more at Christmas when all the parks are in on the act.
Plus, the first couple weeks after Thanksgiving are even less crowded then in September.
Good time to go if you can do it.

          • Sam_Handwich

December is probably my busiest month of the year. grrrr

But thanks for the tip! I haven’t been to Orlando in over a decade and hubby has never been. So we are planning that for our next trip. I think i could happily spend most of a 5 day trip at Epcot.

Try and get hopper passes if you can, though you can certainly spend all day at the MK or Epcot.
Spaceship Earth on the latter is my favorite ride there.
Animal Kingdom has a lot of animals and new rides to enjoy.

Surprisingly in spite of everything this was NOT close to the worst hurricane Florida has seen. Of course as far as cost it will be one of the most costly simply because everything cost so much more anymore. And the added cost of evacuations.
One thing for sure trump will get a big bump for job creationism, though he had nothing to do with the new construction jobs.

    • OdieDenCO

but he’s deporting all the skilled labor that do those jobs

      • Tomcat

Only because Florida was the best at taking advantage of illegals and making them work for peanuts or reporting them.

      • leastyebejudged

        That’s not “skilled labor”.

Those are the jobs the deplorables would normally have,

And this is going to be costly because they built where they shouldn’t’ have built out of materials they shouldn’t have used.

When Puerto Rico upstages you in architectural integrity it’s time to pull your collective head out of your ass and reassess how idiotically you regulate and build.

The mainland did but the damage done to the Keys will take months and likely years to repair.

    • Pip

If it’s not physically attached to the ‘mainland’ folks just don’t care. Well, unless they happen to know someone from the area.

I’ve noticed some folks around work today expressing how their friends homes being torn up has just hit them (the folks at work, not the hurricane victims) so hard this weekend.

  • Where are all the Canadians going to winter this year? Think of the snowbirds!

    • Treant

Somewhere not in the United States, I hope. If they come, they’re at risk of having all their stuff taken and then being deported.

    • JWC

    • Reality.Bites

Key West gets snowbirds, but not on the massive scale the bigger cities do that are less affected.

And of course many Canadians are owners and can’t just pick up and go somewhere else.

      C) Americans find a way to contain the infestation of Murikans…worse than bedbugs

Should they be left to die because their owners abandoned them?

            Are you sober?

          • RoFaWh

Eldad Hagar’s “Hope for Paws” videos on Youtube often feature a dog simply left behind when someone moved away.

I guess I’m rather naive even at my advanced age: this shocks me to my core. In my world when you take a pet in, you are making it a lifetime commitment to house it, feed it, love it, give it vet care, and so on.

          • leastyebejudged

I’d no more consider leaving a pet behind than I would a child.

I’m trying not to think of the endless hours of terror a pet would endure, alone.

Let people go back to check on their pets – and arrest them.

No lure or attraction in SF when the east bay is way more comfortable and easier to get around. Grew up there and believe Thomas Wolff’s book title, “You Can’t Go Home Again.” Not only can’t. Local power company (FPL) for most of South Florida (not sure about the Keys, though) supposedly now has drones to help them with restoration efforts. Not exactly for the purposes you’re describing, but it will be interesting to see if the drones really do help them do their jobs.

      • Nychta

Perhaps. But if folks get hungry and thirsty enough they’ll want to return to comfort. If it were me I’d want to see if my home was still standing, even if I didn’t stay longer than an afternoon.

        • DaddyRay

I agree but if windows busted in or the property was not secure they would probably want to stay to protect it

          • Nychta

Perhaps, but they could gather stuff and take it away. Easy for me to imagine what people could/would do. Gotta admit I’ve never been in that situation.

I expect the main concerns are allowing people in allows looters in, more people there means more strain on already stretched emergency services, people without food or water are going to be problematic, there are probably dead bodies to be dealt with, there may be no sanitation….

      • That_Looks_Delicious

They offered aid something like the day after Harvey hit (8/27 to be exact, 14 days ago). The Governor of Texas accepted the offer, but the Trump admin has still not replied. There’s only so long they can be expected to wait, and since then other hot button issues have popped up for the Mexicans, so I don’t blame them.

Hi fellow JMG’ers, got a question. We just got home from an outing after the hurricane. As hubs went to unlock the front door, a little teeny baby squirrel ran up to us and frantically ran up hubs leg. He was in distress, has some cuts on him but seems okay. We took him in the house and fed him some warmish milk mixed with applesauce through a baby syringe. He ate it up like mad. He won’t eat any solids. We tried crushing some nuts but he isn’t interested. He panics if either of us tries to put him down. Currently hubs has him cradled in his hand and the little guy curled up and is trying to sleep. We will put him in a box later tonight, and try and reunite him with a mama tomorrow if one will take him. What do we do if nobody claims him ? Is there any foods we should try to feed him? Calling a rescue may be futile as most of the city here has no electric and spotty internet as of tonight.

To be fair to the journalists, there was absolutely no way to cover a trainwreck like Donald Trump. Any one of his major gaffs would have ended any other candidacy, and before any one story got stuck in the news cycle another one cropped up that was worse.

      • Talisman

The problem isn’t that they covered the dumpster. The problem is that they gave him so much free air time. He was free to call into faux any time he wanted to discuss pretty much anything he wanted, and MSNBC and CNN waited breathlessly for his next gaffe, even to the point of showing empty podiums when he was scheduled to speak.

There is a fairly simple solution – make sure to give each candidate equal air time so that they can discuss their issues and make their pitch to the American people.

        • billbear1961

And call them out when they tell obvious LIES, when their behaviour is obviously DEPLORABLE!

      • Treant

Many times, I wish they’d simply said something along the lines of:

“We know he’s an attention whore and we’re not going to stick our dicks in that. Here’s some cat memes, followed by coverage of serious and sane candidates, and now sports and the weather.”

      • SoCalGal20

They could have, for example, stopped covering his rallies end-to-end or, you know, cutting away from REAL news to focus on an empty podium while waiting for Trump. There are lots of instances like that, not to mention the normalizing, that the media could have – should have – stopped engaging in but nope. And they could have focused on the fact that their job is to provide NEWS AND INFORMATION, not make ratings the be all and end all. But nope. Also, it’s unconscionable that all of Hillary’s coverage became all about the emails and she could barely get any coverage of policy issues and Trump could get wall-to-wall coverage of his rallies, his surrogates on every show under the sun, etc.

Hillary is absolutely correct that the media has a role in what happened and they STILL won’t acknowledge it or examine it. Look at the hacks at the NYT for instance. When anybody on twitter calls out Maggie Haberman or Glenn Thrush for their bullshit reporting they’re all about defending themselves, discounting the criticisms, etc.

        • billbear1961

Hillary tried to expose the deplorables supporting Trump, and the media savaged her for it, for doing THEIR jobs for them, for denouncing extremists the way THEY should be denouncing them!

They STILL behave as if it’s normal to have such a relentless LIAR in the Oval Office, a liar, a thief, and a RACIST fledgling DICTATOR who has repeatedly obstructed justice, and who is undermining the rule of law by giving aid and comfort to NAZIS to the point that he has pardoned a concentration camp commandant!!

They pay people to come on the air to LIE for him! They provide a platform for a white supremacist to spew his bullshit without calling him out for WHAT HE IS!!

They are a DISGRACE to their profession! They have abdicated their responsibility to defend the truth from baldfaced LIES and genuine democracy from hateful and irrational extremism!!

He’s endangering the natural environment, our oldest alliances, our trade agreements around the world.

He’s undermining the freedom of the press, the independence of the judiciary, the very concept of objective TRUTH.

This third-rate, barely coherent GANGSTER with an army of SHAMELESS media PROPAGANDISTS is obstructing justice, undermining the rule of law and, with it, the concept of EQUAL protection, all the tenets of genuine democracy–all the Enlightenment ideals–it has taken several CENTURIES to firmly establish, without which man is a backwards SAVAGE!!

And not ONE elected voice in a position of real power is speaking out defiantly against him and his ongoing COUP, loudly and proudly, 24/7, in DEFENSE of the Republic!! And the press carry on as if this Republic were not facing the gravest threat to its SURVIVAL since this county’s CIVIL WAR!!

I despise these useless, selfish, cynical, calculating BASTARDS, all of them!!

We should be in the streets, in massive and relentless protests, NOW, BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE!!

Red Cross catching shit for their no show at several shelters in Miami.

    https://twitter.com/ProPublica/status/907317975920857088

    • Ninja0980

Suffice to say, I’ve looked more and more at other ways of helping those in need given my family’s own experience with the Red Cross, not to mention others.

      • UrsusArctos

Mennonite Disaster Services is at the top of my list. They’re in early and stay involved with communities for YEARS. Then Habitat for Humanity and SPCA. I’ve seen all 3 busting their humps and not playing Human Rights Campaign style fund raiser so they can fund another fundraiser.

    • billbear1961

This isn’t the first time in the past couple of weeks I’ve seen evidence that the Red Cross is corrupt.

Last we knew the Canadian Red Cross was still trustworthy, but we’ll have to look into it.

      Is this an American phenomenon?

Is anything left in the U.S.–any institution–one can have any real confidence in??

      • UrsusArctos

Dear Mr Bear, the corruption is OLD news if anyone chose to look or had to deal with them. Elizabeth Dole was the Chairman once upon a time. RC is like the Susan G Komen Fdn – it started with a good goal, but got hijacked and turned into a profit center and training ground for up and coming GOPers (or retiring GOPers looking to cash in).

      • safari

Confidence has dropped in every institution I can think of over the past two decades. Much of it is a precipitous drop. I am very concerned about what comes next.

      • NowAnAgnostic

A WWII veteran told me (way back when–1966 ish) that if a soldier needed something they went to the Salvation Army instead of the Red Cross. This was in the European theater.

    • UrsusArctos

Well, if past is prologue, they MIGHT show up to hang a RC banner or demand the shelter be closed because it wasn’t RC sanctioned. They pulled that shit on the MS coast after Katrina.

    • houstonray

Catching shit here in Houston too. They are having to go on local news and “debunk” what they call “the rumors out there”. Doesn’t matter, we donate our time and money elsewhere, not to the Red Cross….

    • safari

I’m not saying the Red Cross is perfect, but it has been malcast since literally its founding every time there is a disaster.

Crap like this is why I don’t give a dime to the DNC.

      • Ninja0980

She is a member of the Young Turks and a Bernie bot who will attack anyone (John Aravois, Joy Reid) who dares to call out St. Bernie for the fraud he is.
She and others are doing great damage by pushing out the message to young voters that both parties are the same and that if you don’t get a candidate that is 100% pure, stay home or vote third party to teach the Democrats a lesson, and to hell with those who will suffer in the meantime.

        • safari

I don’t trust the Young Turks

          • Ninja0980

            You shouldn’t.
His sole goal is to divide the Democratic party so many of us won’t vote or vote third party, which makes sense given his background.

          • Max_1

The problem with living outwardly such a puritan life as Ted does, er, says he does… Is when the obvious becomes obvious to us all now, he’ll be ridiculed by “his” base and other puritan fundamentals like him. Chastized, I say…

This is one of those areas such fundamentals delve into when railing against “Liberals” and “Liberal ideology”. Sexual perversion is not just about their obvious LGBT hate they spout, it also encompases what their buybull says. Fornacators, they may be… Love the sinner, hate their sin.

If by measure he should be meted, then he too should be stoned… NO?

  • JCF

OK, for those of us not on Twitter: we think Ted Cruz was watching porn (proof thereof), or that he was hacked? [And whether it was the former, he’ll say the latter]

    • safari

If it was a hack, it was a very subtle one with global reach. Just google Ted Cruz and hit “news” and you’ll see that many major publications across the planet have picked up the story.

      • Reality.Bites

I think the simplest explanation is likely true – a staffer who actually runs the twitter account made a mistake.

It’s not that I find it unlikely Cruz enjoys porn. It’s that I find it unlikely he runs the twitter account.

    • Reality.Bites

I find it odd how little the percentages change depending on who Jones faces. Does it indicate each party’s hard base? Leaving 17% up for grabs or, more likely, not voting making the real percentages 52% Moore and 48% Jones.

When asked who they would vote for in the Dec. 12 general election between Jones and Strange, 43.1 percent said Strange and 39.6 said Jones, a former U.S. attorney in Birmingham.

Asked the same question with Moore as the GOP candidate, 43.5 percent supported the former Alabama chief justice and 39.9 percent of those polled said they would vote for Jones.

The sun is shining, the birds are singing. 78% of Pinellas County residents have no power,
gas, internet or phone service. Along with Human guests, I have an extra parakeet, a Great Dane, and a very noisy cat. We lost power about 10 last
night so we sat on the lanai and had some adult beverages. A friend on Indian Bluff Island called around
1:30 AM to say the roof shingles were coming off his house, he had ankle deep water
on the 1st floor, and the mast just broke off his sailboat. Around 2 a.m. we
heard a loud noise and my HUGE Jacaranda tree popped right out of the ground. When
it became daylight, we found that nearly every tree on Westlake Blvd had been
uprooted. Other than that, we had no problems. Power was restored here around 10 last night but all of the traffic lights are still down or not functioning and many roads are still blocked by trees.
