Junior Tells Senate That He Only Sought Russian Dirt On Hillary To Determine Her “Fitness” To Be President

The New York Times reports:

Donald Trump Jr. told Senate investigators on Thursday that he set up a June 2016 meeting with a Russian lawyer because he was intrigued that she might have damaging information about Hillary Clinton, saying it was important to learn about Mrs. Clinton’s “fitness” to be president. But nothing came of the Trump Tower meeting, he said, and he was adamant that he never colluded with the Russian government’s campaign to disrupt last year’s presidential election.

In a prepared statement during an interview with Senate Judiciary Committee investigators, the younger Mr. Trump said he was initially conflicted when he heard that the lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, might have damaging information about Mrs. Clinton. Despite his interest, he said, he always intended to consult with his own lawyers about the propriety of using any information that Ms. Veselnitskaya, who has ties to the Kremlin, gave him at the meeting.

A copy of Mr. Trump’s statement was obtained by The New York Times. The acknowledgment by the president’s eldest son that he intended to seek legal counsel after the meeting suggests that he knew, or at least suspected, that accepting potentially damaging information about a rival campaign from a foreign country raised thorny legal issues.

          • JWC

did you know that was one thing that from the AIDs epidemic worked out well for first gays and then STR8’s as well

          • Todd20036

I know. The other thing was that AIDS forced a LOT of gay people to come out of the closet at once.

Once straight people got over their fear of HIV+ people, gays were suddenly people’s friends and families, and not monsters trying to entice young boys into the “gay lifestyle”.

Mind you, I’m talking about a silver lining to a horrible time. Only now with HIV controllable (where there is adequate access to HAART drugs) can people collectively move on

I suppose over time it also changed Ronny and Nancy’s shared mind

          • JWC

An epidemic first has to be identified and, in the case of AIDS,has to have a willingness to do something about it(a 4 year lag thanx to the GOP) It then becomes much like mating elephants , a lot of disturbed dust and loud trumpeting then 2 years to get results

      • bambinoitaliano

Hmmmm not a bad idea. The shit gibbon can’t issue the pardon if Jr. is not convicted. Maybe that will get him spill out more.

      • crewman

Or charge him with something much worse, plus this. So that when Trump pardons him, it is an acknowledgment of guilt of the entire thing.

O/T: Upbeat Trump raves to Schumer, Pelosi about news coverage of their deal
The president called the Democratic leaders after striking a budget deal that Republicans hate.

Many Republicans were furious with President Donald Trump’s budget deal Wednesday, stunned that the president quickly gave in to Democratic demands to pair hurricane relief with a three-month debt limit hike — though getting nothing in return.

But in calls with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi Thursday morning, Trump raved about the positive news coverage it had received, according to people familiar with the calls, and he seemed very pleased with his decision.

Trump specifically mentioned TV segments praising the deal and indicated he’d been watching in a call with Schumer, two people said. And he was jovial in a call with Pelosi and agreed to send a tweet she asked for about the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, these people said, while also mentioning the attention the deal had gotten. He indicated to both leaders he would be willing to work together again.

“He seemed super upbeat,” one person familiar with the calls said.

Another person familiar with the calls said Trump told Pelosi her coverage was even better than his. “The press has been incredible,” Trump said.

Pelosi herself bragged that she had gotten results after asking him to tweet reassurances that Dreamers shouldn’t worry about being deported over the next six months while lawmakers try to secure a DACA fix.

“I was telling my colleagues, ‘This is what I asked the president to do,’ and boom boom boom, the tweet appeared,” she said at a news conference Thursday.

Several White House aides said Trump seemed to be in a good mood Thursday morning, and was planning to have dinner Thursday night with Speaker Paul Ryan. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed the calls with the Democratic leaders but declined to confirm the tweet or the contents.

“The president spoke to Sens. McConnell and Schumer as well as Speaker Ryan and Minority Leader Pelosi this morning. The president is committed to working across the aisle and doing what is needed to best serve the American people. The president is also having dinner with Speaker Ryan later tonight,” she said.

In the eyes of Trump, news coverage often matters more than almost anything else. That he was hailed for getting results while working with Democrats could spur similar decisions. But White House and congressional aides said it was unclear how many other issues there would be agreement on — and that Trump could soon change his mind.

        I saw this, TLD:

Politico: “With Congress set to lift the debt ceiling into December as part of the deal, Trump floated the idea that the next time Congress votes to raise the debt ceiling, it could be the last. He said conversations should happen over the next three months, according to people in the room.”

“Schumer said such a move could not be accomplished now, but indicated he would talk to his caucus about considering structural changes to the debt limit in December, a conversation Trump supported.”

This is true, but I guess there were fears jackbooted ICE might jump the gun?

        • Tomcat

With the Attorney General drooling at the thought I would worry too, and I am a citizen.

          • billbear1961

ICE has already deported a couple of citizens–at least a couple–refusing to listen to court rulings that declared them to be legal citizens.

So much for the rule of law!

If the Democrats now have some influence with Dump, they should take him to task for this, and not just this!

    • Ninja0980

      Why should anyone believe him?

      • billbear1961

        Yes, I know.

      • billbear1961

One would be foolish to trust him.

But they can see where this goes.

If the GOP tries anything nasty–like going after the ACA again–the Democrats can remind them they need Democratic votes again in December.

“Do that and you can raise the debt ceiling and pass a budget on your OWN in December,” they can say to the GOP.

The GOP can’t muster the votes they need to do those things all by themselves.

Yet Jeff Sessions and the rest of Trump’s sycophantic liars are still there, unpunished.

  • Raising_Rlyeh

Yes, and I’m sure he looked at all those playboy magazines for the articles.

    • David J

Hey, some of those articles when I was growing up were eye-openers, I recall especially the one on “homosexuality”…changed my life ! I wasn’t looking at the female models any longer, I was looking at their male model counterparts.

  • Subtly missed in all this: Don Jr just admitted he was soliciting foreign contributions (in the form of information) to his father’s campaign, which itself is illegal. And he further sealed the proof that he, his father and everyone else involved with the “it was about adoptions” false narrative were engaging in attempted obstruction.

    • David J

Quite correct! I think we have enough evidence here of multiple crimes, both on the part of Junior and Senior and all their associates, son-in-law, former campaign chair, etc etc. Let’s get down to business with charges soon, or at least the minute hurricane season is over. Of course, start with charging the top guy first, get him out of office first, then his idiot Christian dominionist VP, then charge all the rest when there will be no presidential pardon available, even from lyin Ryan.

      • A case could also be credibly be made that Don Sr, in helping write the initial phony explanation, was engaging in witness tampering and conspiracy.

        Basically–
        – Don Jr + his attorneys writing & releasing a statement? Legal.
        – Anyone else, especially if they’re continuing to claim they knew nothing about the meeting, and when what’s said is immediately demonstrably false but purports to be exculpatory? Not legal.

I have several armchair retired lawyers I consult with on Facebook, yeah, real lawyers. They are basically saying we’ve now hit the mother load of admission of guilt, and all the dominoes can fall one by one, starting the big domino first, of course, after Junior’s “admission” of act and rather flimsily-constructed rationale or excuse or “justification” for such acts. It’s as-if Nixon, himself, had personally ordered the plumbers into the Watergate building.

          • Actual lawyers is where I get my info, too. And am occasionally corrected when I myself am wrong. Which happens.

He was conflicted about the whole thing? Which is why his father was speaking with bigly enthusiasm at a campaign rally just days prior that he was about to come by game changing dirt on Hillary, stuff that by itself would all but hand him the White House keys. Where were the misgivings then? If Junior had any doubts he certainly didn’t express them either in public or in private.

I still firmly believe that “Hillary” was the hook that the Russians used to show Don Jr. what they had on his father. The fact that he and the ‘close friend’ who arranged the meeting barely ever spoke afterwards as if something happened to sour their relationship, and of course the fact that nobody on the Trump team spoke of imminent dirt after the collusion meeting.

    • David J

Interesting theory. I must think about that a little more. You’re saying the Russians came and went and told Junior that his father’s goose would be cooked by November unless Donald Senior played-along? Interesting thought.

It is said in an old Chinese proverb, (or something like that, maybe Confucian)..that the sins of the fathers are visited on their sons, but here we have Uday and Kusay helping to publicly admit to their father’s sins. How convenient !

Junior has lived with his daddy and he wants people to believe that he actually thought that Hillary may have been less fit to be POTUS than his deranged father.

  • Galvestonian

O.K. dummy … getting the info from Mother Russia is still illegal – Do not pass Go – go directly to Jail – Do not collect $200.

    • David J

As long as his “daddy” is out of office, he might well wind up in prison for a long long time, yeah!

Dumber than the proverbial “sack of hammers”, with sincere apologies to any hammers who may be offended by the comparison.

Some how, I bet he’s got his Fitbit set to remind him to breath, his heart to beat and his eyelids to periodically blink. ‘Cuz Jr. here hasn’t got the sense to make that happen without help.

“……it was important to learn about Mrs. Clinton’s “fitness” to be president.”…. Yeah, I’ll just bet on that! This spawn of the President is every bit as believable as his father. Better that he should have been more concerned about his father’s fitness to be Prez.

Ha ha ha. This guy couldn’t determine the fitness of a Reuben sandwich.

What a pathetic waste of space.
