REPORT: Extremist Former Sheriff David Clarke Was Blocked From Landing White House Gig By John Kelly

The Daily Beast reports:

Sheriff David A. Clarke just lost out on yet another Trump administration job—and he has the president’s chief of staff to thank.

Officials in the West Wing tell The Daily Beast that Clarke had been in consideration for a White House post over the past seven weeks. But on Tuesday, the controversial former Milwaukee County lawman signed on with an outside group instead. He will serve as a spokesman and “senior adviser” for the pro-Trump super PAC America First Action.

Four sources working in and close to the Trump White House said his failure to land a gig in the West Wing or at the Department of Homeland Security, where Clarke unsuccessfully sought a job earlier this year, was in large part the result of opposition from White House chief of staff John Kelly. Kelly led DHS until late July.

I am guessing I wouldn’t agree on policy decisions of General Kelly for the most part, but at least he’s having some influence on moving the most obscenely unqualified people out. I know, Trump is the real problem here, but firing Trump isn’t in his control.

The fact that Clarke would even be considered in the first place, let alone that he would need to be blocked, is just… shocking. Revolting.

    • Nowhereman

It’s right up there with pardoning Joe Arpaio. Trump only wants the very best people around him…(gag me)

      • Vanessa Morris

You right people just like him unfit

    • That_Looks_Delicious

There are other Trump nominees awaiting confirmation that are equally outrageous and unqualified (although they’re probably not guilty of murder which Clarke might be). His nominees for chief scientist at USDA and to run NASA are appalling, know-nothing political hacks with zero scientific background or qualifications.

      • stanhope

        Not guity of murder YET!

    • Todd20036

No more shocking than Kid Rock being a viable candidate to be a Senator.

      • FAEN

Doesn’t it seem specially since Cheeto that the less you know, the less qualified you are as a candidate the more the extremists are all over it.

Even though it hasn’t produced anything legislatively that they support.

        • JWC

It’s the Peter principal or a version thereof promot stupid

        • romanhans

I just skimmed an article (I’m like Trump in just that one respect) that claimed religious fundamentalists are outcasts scorned by society so they actually appreciate it when Trump does a major F.U. to the world. Not sure if that’s the correct explanation but that’s clearly what he’s doing.

      • Vanessa Morris

Kid Rock is a disgrace he look like a dirtbag he look like someone that has a hangover all the time

    • DaMoldBrok

I’m not fully versed on the 25th Amendment, but can’t the White House staff, along with the Vice President, able to get the ball rolling?

      • clay

No. VP and Cabinet. I don’t think the likes of pRick erry, Betsy DeVos, Pruitt, and Dr. Carson are up to thinking about the 25th.

        • DaMoldBrok

Yes, you would be correct. All of those completely unqualified folks in positions which were approved by Congress, that were nominated by someone that is completely unqualified for the position, by the barest minimum of voters that are completely incapable of forming a line of words together to create a sentence of any rational, would be the ones that would have to come together and have the courage to stand in front of the American Public to announce that they have come to the conclusion that the person, that was accidentally elected to the Presidency, by the Electoral College, not by the American Public, which had a vote count of over 3 million, is incapable to perform the abilities, which has been proven time and again since the inauguration, and feel that they need to invoke the 25th Amendment, to protect the People and the sanctity of The Presidency.

          Yeah, that’s going to happen!

          • Craig Howell

Nothing would prevent Trump from firing anyone in his Cabinet who gave the slightest hint of considering the 25th Amendment, so that “solution” is pretty illusory.

    • Vanessa Morris

You are so right neither one of them is fit for nothing

  • jimbo65

And yet he didn’t, lift a finger to prevent 45 from repealing DACA

    • PeterC

Did you notice his smashed finger?

    • clay

Policy might be too far afield– has no chance of cover for him.

      • jimbo65

But he’s always seemed to be simpatico with 45 regarding immigration issues. At his confirmation he declined to answer if he would support upholding DACA.

        • clay

Trump’s been basically unconfirming of his own policies.

The White House version…not so much.

    • Cuberly

I’ve started referring to Kelly as the Nanny.

      • Dramphooey

What is this magic thing about Kelly? Is it love? Or is it magic?

        • Cuberly

Well, there obviously is power there. Ever since Bannon was canned the intensity of the leaks has definitely diminished.

      • David Walker

But is that the Bette Davis nanny or the Fran Drescher model?

That’s a very good thing. Kelly is able to control access to the president.

Unfortunately for him, however, Donald Trump will not be handled. He’s his own worst enemy.

    Tick. Tick. Tick. . .

    • another_steve

Russia’s mostly out of the news. His theofascist base has obviously been praying, and lo and behold Trump has been gifted with hurricanes and the threat of nuclear war.

O happy days, for this White House.

      • Todd20036

Muller isn’t intimidated by all this, and that is all that matters as far as Russia is concerned.

        • FAEN

Love Worf. I read about a year ago that Michael Dorn was shopping around a ‘Worf’ series but since I’ve heard nothing since I guess it’s DOA. Shame.

And speaking of shame-fuck Netflix for streaming the new ‘Star Trek’ series all around the world except the US. Grrrrr!

          • Keroleen

I’m with you on the Worf love. However, the new Trek situation isn’t Netflix’s fault. The show’s a CBS production and part of its inherent purpose is to get people to sign up for CBS’s pay streaming service, so it’s all on their head. I’m sure Netflix is just as frustrated at losing out on the US/Canada market for this show as we are at them not getting it.

          • Carl

            Yeah, blame CBS, not Netflix.

That being said, I do have a CBS all access account for Star Trek and a certain reality show I admit is my guilty pleasure.

          • Celloman G

            I do that, too.

          • FAEN

Thanks for the explanation-less pissed at Netflix now 😊.

          • Harley

Netflix will have season 1 once season 2 starts airing.

          • FAEN

            I hope so.

      GET ON WITH THE IMPEACHMENT!!

      • FAEN

My sweet Mr 🐻-I am with you but even if we start ptoceedings the House won’t do shit about it unless he fires Mueller and then I don’t think they’ll have much of a choice.

        • billbear1961

You might be surprised what they’ll do if massive and relentless protests succeed in putting the fear of GOD into the two-faced brutes.

          • FAEN

Unfortunately there is so much apathy. So many people feel helpless they just check out.

          • romanhans

They won’t impeach Trump because we’re too fed up to care but we’re too fed up to care because they won’t impeach Trump?

Can Kelly last a week ?
( if Trump ever stops watching Fox News and

  • Treant

So Dumpy wanted this and Kelly did not? Then Kelly’s days are numbered in the single digits.

If Dumpy didn’t care and was just trying to go golf, Kelly might last.

But honestly, Clarke would be so crazy and so incompetent that it would have accelerated the distrust of the Trump “presidency.” So no points to Kelly.

  • Halou

Trump will be incandescent with rage when he finds out about this.

There are no good options right now, only least bad options. The GOP in Congress has shown over and over again that they are completely craven and irresponsible. I’m sure that how we got in this situation will be the subject of History and Poli Sci dissertations for generations to come.

Myself, if I had to pick one person or institution that is the most responsible for our current situation, I would say Fox News.

Its the size of a midwest state FFS.

      • GeoffreyPS

I know you did say “shape of”, but i got a visual of Kansas rotating out there in the ocean. Dorothy doesn’t need a tornado when the whole state is spinning!

    • Lazycrockett

Looks like its going to go up Florida, Georgia, Tenn, Kentucky stall and then move through Ohio, Penn. and the East Coast. High winds + Full leafed Tree’s = massive power outages.

      • Treant

Fortunately, it’ll be a depression at worst by the time it hits OH and PA (and by extension, parts of MD, WV, NY, and NJ). Power outages should be minimal as we’ve moved a lot of our power mains underground or up very, very high on super-towers, and we don’t lose power any longer even in the most powerful thunderstorms.

        • Lazycrockett

Ike was a depression also, but he teamed up with an existing front and caused major damage.

          • Treant

Ike was also seven years ago…but missed me by a mile.

We did lose power during Sandy, but only for a day.

          • Lazycrockett

My then 70s year old parents lost power for a week, so I had to go and make sure they were doing okay till power was restored. I have a feeling I will be doing the same early next week.

          • fuzzybits

Ike caused the wind to blow for days here and caused a lot of damage. The wind if it blows for too long can make me batty.

          • Treant

Yeah, the damage during Sandy was pretty extensive. Limbs down, leaves and twigs everywhere, and so on. And yes, constant pounding winds are just annoying. Don’t live here, at the top of a hill, either. It’s never windstill.

          • marshlc

Don’t want to move to the northern plains then. There are lots of stories of early settlers being driven insane by the wind, and having spent some time in southern Alberta, I can believe it. The wind just never. stops. blowing.

That’s great but I wouldn’t put it past ICE to start rounding those people up. They have no qualms about stalking people at schools, government offices, TESTIFYING in court cases, etc.

      • Lazycrockett

Well ICE already has all the information on file.

        • SoCalGal20

Yeah, but they seem to really enjoy kidnapping people going to government offices on official business.

OT: I saw my neurologist again today (second visit). Although somewhat improved, we’re nowhere close to the 80% headache free days she wants (but we’re already up to 40% headache free or barely have a headache days, which is a vast improvement over 5%). So we’re raising my Effexor dose to the maximum response for migraines: 225 mg.

So, good news, and she commends my patience in taking care of this (hey, I had a headache for 40 years, what’s a couple months where I actually do feel better?!)

    • SoCalGal20

It’s kind of hard to make any plans regarding one’s life if you don’t know whether you will be deported from the country or not in 6 months.

Should I attend college? Should I accept this job? Should I marry and have kids? Should I emigrate to Canada? Should I go into hiding? Should I brush up on my Spanish? Etc., etc.

        • Treant

          Newcomer! Immigrant!

        • UrsusArctos

Mine were the natives, MA Colonials, Nieuw Amsterdammers, and VA Colonials who were screaming to stop your ancestors from coming in and ruining “their” country. Best we can tell the latest immigrant I’m from arrived in the early 1700s. A different kind of lineage for a redneck, swamp critter.

      • Rebecca Gardner

In all honesty that’s my Dad’s side that came here that long ago. Mom’s side is fairly recent from Germany.

Meh, like most humans I don’t know where my ‘real’ grandparents were born. In my case it’s because I’m adopted. I actually don’t know where or even who my birth father is or is from, I only know what my birth mother claims.

I suspect that’s true for more people than would like to admit it too. Faking genealogies has long been a thing. 🙂

You might be able to find people you’re related to.

        • Karl Dubhe

Adoption, I really don’t care much about the biological parents. Mine actually wanted me. 🙂

Whatever I am, whoever I’m ‘blood’ related to, doesn’t matter as much as where I chose to live and what I chose to be. After all, go back 300k years and we’re all kissing cousins. Amongst other activities.

If they shut the plant down as a precaution in the next two days there will be no chance of a meltdown. I expect the NRC event reports to tell me something about this shortly… they are updated daily: https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/event-status/event/2017/

      • safari

The spent fuel pools, on the otherhand…

      • SoCalGal20

        The NRC is still functioning?

    • SoCalGal20

And this (among other reasons) is why nuclear power is bad.

      • safari

I wouldn’t say it is fatally bad, but the majority of our technology is literally from the 1940s/50s when it comes to commercial power. Literally what happened is someone took the first military designs for power, blew them up so they can take out entire regions, and built them. We then spent the next 40 years trying to make them safe. Then we decided not to recycle fuel to reduce its radioactive footprint for reasons (in the US, at least). There will always be what I consider scarred mater that will take a long time to safeguard… but until recently our current designs have major issues and the next generation of plants won’t come online until the 2040s at the earliest and in the US we could do a lot more to reduce and safeguard waste.

        • safari

Also it isn’t my first choice for power. It’s more a reserve capacity thing in my book.

          • SoCalGal20

Imo it’s just too risky of a form of power for people handle responsibly. I mean, look at our current administration and imagine that the kind of people who are making decisions over at, say, the EPA were running the NRC or handling nuclear policy. Rick Perry is the Energy Secretary for crying out loud.

          • safari

Nuclear technology always seems to be 20 years away from being safe, so I agree to an extent. It has such promises theoretically. It can literally produce its own fuel. Unfortunately the reality is much different than the theory.

The Alt-Righties and Neo-Nazis are big Tucker fans for a reason.

        • safari

I didn’t pay much attention to him even after Jon Stewart skewered him on his own show. Then he started to advocate not having insurance as a choice as his wife gave birth without it which was a choice made because they were wealthy… so should others care if they have it? At that point I stare at him with daggers.

The police chase that caused the crash was carried out by state troopers. There could be a whole other chain of command mixed up in this.

Thinking about Voyager 1 and how it every day breaks records, how it is the result of such enormous enginuity, how much work it took from so many different people, 40 YEARS AGO!, it takes my breath away.

That we humans are able to do something like that, it’s good to know in times like these.

Derivative of season “Freak Show” when it comes to the clowns.
I’m a dedicated viewer though, so I’ll always stick with it. A lot of the former cast has bailed, only Peters, Paulson, and Cheyenne are back. No Kathy Bates, Dennis O’Hare, Angela Bassett, at least not yet. I don’t like reliving the shock of election night, but the show’s not supposed to be comfortable. We’ll see if it turns out to be a hot mess.

You can return your toaster and other gifts tomorrow at the office beginning at 8 am. (ok, kidding) I came out to her disco hit classic, “I need a man”, and her fantastic Warm Leatherette album. She was an icon back in the day.

        • Skeptical_Inquirer

According to wiki, she was a high fashion model who was in Elle & Vogue, later did some music and also has done some acting. I actually saw her in Conan the Destroyer. The movie is pretty terrible but she was fine in it.

          • Lumpy Gaga

            “later did some music”

She’s got an incredible body of work that stands alone without a TV nearby. Yeah, a lot of crap over those years, too, but she’s been recording since the 70s. Nobody’s got a perfect 40-year track record in that regard.

The city boys never did figure out how us rednecks got the best weed, back in the dark ages. Easy, it was coming in THROUGH the swamp.

          • safari

I’m told the best spots are where it cross pollinates with those farmers who care about their product as opposed to wild ditch weed.

          • UrsusArctos

Occasionally large bales of Mexican/Colombian/Unknown origin would be found floating in the Gulf or washed into the marshes. Funny, they never became pollution issues. http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=square%20grouper

          • safari

Thank you. I’m young enough to know that it really shouldn’t matter.

          • TJ

          • djcoastermark

And that is what makes Grace soooo good. She threw out the norms when it wasn’t quite acceptable outside the LGBT+ and aware crowd.

          • UrsusArctos

Never had a fuck to stop giving either.

          • safari

Would you mind explaining? I don’t mean to diminish her, but I really have no idea how to receive her outside of this thread and, as I said, Bond.

          • UrsusArctos

Grace made strange interesting. She embraced camp/fashion/drag and took it to an extreme in her performances. Think how Divine went places in movies no one had gone before. I wasn’t a HUGE fan, but appreciated her music and style.

          • Sam_Handwich

she was something like Cher or Bette Midler. she did everything. and she was a personality more than anything, did outrageous things on talk shows. i think i remember her on Merv or something in a cat costume crawling onto his desk.

maybe Gaga would be a good point of reference

          • UrsusArctos

I think Gaga has FAR better musical chops, but for showmanship, it would be a photo finish.

          • safari

Now this, I understand. Thank you.

          • safari

            …was she debased?

          • djcoastermark

Boy do I have memories of her. I was a wee lad, going to the Rudely Elegant parties. ( um, not quite of age, but it’s all in who you knew to let you in) Rudely is considered the start of the circuit party before they were called that. She was the performer that night and my ex was her “prop” I could go on, but it’s a long story. Check out some of her performances. Back then they called her gender bending too.

        • safari

She actually wasn’t bad in Conan the Destroyer, particularly when compared to Ahnold.

Ahem: you must be on Twitter to vote.

      • Reality.Bites

And have absolutely nothing better to do than “vote” in a poll of one South Carolina twitter user’s 400 followers, conveying absolutely no meaning or value whatsoever.

  • KnownDonorDad

First he canned The Mooch, now he blocked Clarke. He can’t change Trump’s stripes, but he seems to be doing about the best he can in the situation.

And he doesn’t have the balls to stand by his decision.

My first thought too. He had to have a dang keebler elf deliver the bad news. What a, a, putz !

        • Lazycrockett

But Keebler sure as shit loved to deliver it.

OK, who else is watching the totally awesome American Horror Story season opener. It’s about Trump winning, which is obviously the greatest horror story every told.

    • houstonray

Just finished it. Without being spoiler-y, I liked it. It really taps into fear, obviously brought into the open by Trump. I’ll be curious to see where they go with it.

      • JCF

Thanks for the No Spoilers. For an AHS premiere, I generally watch it the next day…in the daytime! :-0

I was reading earlier today about how some U.S. military person’s may get deported back other countries… This is just the same. Trump is a danger to America.

I saw her. She was being interviewed by (I think) Jacob Sobiroff, and she almost casually added that at the end (of telling about herself as a Dreamer), “my husband’s in the Army, he deploys to Afghanistan in six months”.

            i asked the googles..

A figure of 870 millibar (25.69 in) was recorded on 12 Oct 1979 by the US Air Weather Service 483 km (300 miles) west of Guam in the Pacific Ocean in the eye of Super Typhoon Tip which involved wind speeds of 165 kts (305 km/h; 190 mph).

Keep in mind this was a *drop* that was discussed. These are recorded lowest measurements for comparison of where it dropped to. Windspeeds and rainfall are not necessarily related in a linear manner to these differences to my knowledge

      • KarenAtFOH

The gradient of pressure over distance is a key factor in wind speeds.

Atlantic hurricanes were not named until 1950, and were not given human names until 1953. Men’s names were added in 1979. Pacific hurricanes were given names beginning in 1960.

OT: If Jeff Session is that fucking worried about drugs he’d be more worried about various pharmaceuticals rather than pot. A guy claims he killed his wife while on a cold medicine. (yeah, yeah, I know he could be barfing up one hell of a lie but interestingly enough on a buzzfeed article about the same murder, quite a few people who got hooked on Coricidin said that while they never hurt anybody, they lost time and did crazy, stupid stuff.) And oh, jeez, psychosis is a side effect?

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/i-think-i-did-it-man-says-911-call-he-took-cold-medicine-awoke-to-find-wife-slain/

Phelps responds, “I have blood all over me and there’s a bloody knife on the bed and I think I did it.”

Phelps says the medication he took was Coricidin, a cough and cold medication,
“because I know it can make you feel good and sometimes I can’t sleep at night.”

Toward the end of the seven-minute 911 call, Matthew Phelps started sobbing, saying his wife didn’t deserve this.

It wasn’t known if Phelps had a lawyer.

Coricidin contains dextromethorphan and chlorpheniramine, which experts say when taken in high doses – which is typically a result of recreational use – can cause euphoria, agitation, psychoses and dissociative phenomena.

A statement available on the Coricidin website describes abuse of over-the-counter products including those that contain dextromethorphan, one of the active ingredients in certain Coricidin products, as a “long-standing issue” and says the cough suppressant is safe when used as directed.

    • JCF

Funny, I think of dextromethorphan as “the cough suppressant which doesn’t do a damn thing, when I’ve got a bad cough” [Then, I NEED the opiate codeine, or fuhgeddaboutit! Fortunately, I rarely get that bad of a cough anymore—since I was diagnosed w/ asthma, and take (when in asthma season/conditions) the inhaled medicine to keep it in check.]

    • Tomcat

Right there you are, do not take in excess or these things can happen.so the guy is guilty as hell anyway.

OT: Obama to make speech in Toronto on Sept. 29

    https://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2017/09/05/former-us-president-barack-obama-to-speak-in-toronto.html

Former U.S. president Barack Obama will speak on global citizenship in Toronto on Sept. 29 at a time when all eyes are on his Oval Office successor, Donald Trump.

Hosted by Canada 2020, a non-profit, left-leaning, Ottawa-based think-tank, Obama will speak at a lunchtime event at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

It will be Obama’s second visit to Canada since leaving the White House. Now on the speakers’ circuit, Obama participated in a similar event in Montreal in June.

As with the earlier appearance, Obama is expected to answer questions from a moderator after the speech.

And, as then, access will be for those who can afford the steep cost. Individual tickets are not available, but tables of 10 will be sold starting Tuesday, at $10,000 a pop.

  • Steve Smith

Possibly the fact that Clarke is a murdering bigot has less to do with his failure to get a job with Trump than his skin colour. Keep the White House truly White!!

  • Thanks, John!
