Obama: Trump Is “Cruel And Wrong” On DACA

NBC News reports:

Former President Barack Obama criticized his successor Tuesday for rescinding an immigration program that protects some undocumented immigrants who came to the U.S. as children from deportation, calling President Donald Trump’s decision “cruel.”

Preserving Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, is “about basic decency,” Obama said, defending his signature immigration action in one of his few public statements since Trump took office.

“To target these young people is wrong — because they have done nothing wrong. It is self-defeating — because they want to start new businesses, staff our labs, serve in our military, and otherwise contribute to the country we love,” Obama said. “And it is cruel. What if our kid’s science teacher, or our friendly neighbor turns out to be a Dreamer? Where are we supposed to send her? To a country she doesn’t know or remember, with a language she may not even speak?”

Trump is only doing this to destroy anything good with Obama’s name attached.

Congress hasn’t had their say yet, and after the 2018 elections, hopefully everything will be fixed with a veto-proof, bipartisan majority…including his anti-transgender actions, among other things.

    • Gianni

That is the crux of Trump’s issues concerning legislation. If it was encouraged or fought for by Obama; passed by Obama; or has his name attached to it (Obamacare), then Donnie insists it has to bite the dust. He’ll throw all he can at demolishing, trashing, and removing any of Obama’s legislative successes. Seems very much like a personal vendetta to me. Any benefits to the country/people be damned.

      • JP

Yes, but everyone that benefitted from Obama’s policies will be his living legacy. His main legacy will be thta everyone wanted him back after Trump got in.

      • Regan DuCasse

Barack Obama, said in his own words, during his campaign and Presidency, what Trump is being vilified for when it comes to illegal immigration.
And, BO asserts he implemented DACA, because Congress didn’t act.
Well, yes…Congress DID act. They said no.
        They can still say no.
And regardless of the innocence of the presence of DACA’s while they were minors. They aren’t minors anymore. And not all are achievers.
It might not be fair to hold the children accountable for their parents criminal actions.
        But consequences must come due.
The parents can be deported, and leave their adult DACA’s. They aren’t helpless children anymore.
But forcing the country to endure so much lawlessness, and continuing to be suckered, is wrong.
        And always was wrong.

        • Joseph Miceli

No it wasn’t . There is law and then there’s what’s moral . You people are all aghast at Barack Obama’s executive orders , then remain completely silent when the Republican does the same thing . Begone ! You have no power here!

          • Regan DuCasse

What’s moral, is that immigrants respect our laws, and the sovereignty that our country is entitled to. That they be accountable, and law abiding with the permission and knowledge of our country to be here, and stay here.
What’s moral, is that those who swore an oath to uphold the same, do so.
It’s their office’s responsibility to abide by them, as well as enforce them.
Both BO and Trump failed to do so in their respective ways.
And this started long before either was in office.
            And EO is not law.
And there is the supremacy clause of the Constitution that I know for a fact, that disqualifies sanctuary city or state policies outright.
And I’m NOT silent about Trump, nor was I aghast at Obama.
Don’t generalize with that “you people” crap.

          • Joseph Miceli

Let me give you a quote:
“Christians are called to treat another as they’d be treated.
The point is that how one treats another human being, and the results of that treatment, is at the root of moral decisions(sic.)”
            You people sure are hypocrites.

          • Regan DuCasse

            What’s with this ‘you people’?
I’ve never broken the laws of another country. I’ve gone to each country, with their permission and knowledge and I left when expected to.
I was law abiding when I was there, and I was who I said I was when I got there.
And I’m sure this is true, even of Trump.
I expect a person who is from another country, to do this, as is necessary and warranted, in how they treat this country.
And when you don’t, then that country has every right to require you to leave.
Do something illegal, then expect to have legal protections in order to have that lawbreaking accommodated?
No, that quote of mine, still holds when in this context.
And that’s why you don’t do such quotes OUT of context or the spirit of it’s intent.

          • Joseph Miceli

“you people” apparently aggravates the ever living shit out of you. That’s why I keep posting it!
LOL, I’ve seen your other posts and you are one of the good guys. We’ll have to disagree on this and I’ll stop trolling you.

          • Regan DuCasse

It’s confusing, more than anything. And these threads can’t turn nasty, just because they are confusing for no reason, when one isn’t careful.
Thanks for the rest of it though.

    O/T but go Al!
Of course the GOP will ignore this and confirm the right wing hack anyway, something Patrick Leahy foolishly didn’t do when Democrats controlled the Senate.
Four of the confirmed Circuit Court judges so far this year were confirmed to seats that opened up Obama while Democrats had control because Leahy wanted to play nice instead of telling folks like Cruz and Ron Johnson to take their blue slips and stick them were the sun doesn’t shine.
Republicans did the same with W judges, Democrats should have done the same but wanted to reach across the aisle etc.
All that got us was unfilled Circuit Court seats that are now being filled with right wing hacks.
Democrats play nice, Republicans play to win.
    End of rant.

    • billbear1961

      Play nice?

They are COWARDS, who let these THUGS walk all over common DECENCY!!

The judges being appointed by Trump won’t give a GODDAMN about people’s rights, about treating people decently, fairly!

Honestly? This is Obama’s fault. If he had just declared martial law like everyone claimed he was going to, we never would have gotten into this mess.

    • Gianni

Fortunately, Martial Law cannot be used willy-nilly on the whim of a President. There are specific situations, such as rebellion, insurrection, or severe danger to the nation.

      • Or the existence of a President who simply doesn’t give a fuck about the law save as it serves his whims, desires, and impulses.

Like President Twitler, for example. He’ll do it in a heartbeat the day he thinks he can actually get away with it.

        • Gianni

I’m not worried about that. He may think he could do that, but it would be w/o legal merit and totally illegal. I can’t imagine that Congress would not step in with such an abuse by the Prez.

          • SoCalGal20

Really? They’re sitting there right now – while he bans Muslims, says some neo-Nazis are ok, guts our government agencies, conspires with Russia, commits obstruction of justice, and on and on. And on. And aside from an occasional finger wag from Miss Lindsey and John McCain, not one fucking thing done to stop him. So you think now that the right is demonizing left wing “antifa”, that they’d lift a finger if he declared martial law? They won’t. As long as there’s something in it for them.

I get your point and your frustration, but, really, such an outlandish maneuver doesn’t concern me.

Trump’s immigration hypocrisy. America wont take in people who don’t know English, wont take in people who fail to pass a cultural identity quiz, wont take in people who don’t already have an invitation to work or study in the US.
Exceptions, of course, are always made for supremely wealthy individuals / ‘corporate persons’ and those who donate goods and services to the Trump regime.

    Oh, by the way, Latin-American countries if you are listening, we have this bunch of English speaking Americans who we don’t want because they “look funny”, they haven’t seen you in decades, have no idea what life is like within your borders and lack friends or family or anything else they can rely on to sustain themselves.       An ex post facto law (corrupted from Latin: ex postfacto, lit. ‘out of the aftermath’) is a law that retroactively changes the legal consequences (or status) of actions that were committed, or relationships that existed, before the enactment of the law. In criminal law, it may criminalize actions that were legal when committed; it may aggravate a crime by bringing it into a more severe category than it was in when it was committed;

Related legal principles at issue are waiver and estoppel. By allowing these people to build a life and receive an education here while collecting taxes from their work while failing to ensure that the nations their parents brought them here from will bear any responsibility for their well-being or human rights, we’ve waived the right to deport them and now should be estopped from trying to kick them out at this point. It’s only equitable and humane.
