Mattis Reacts To North Korea’s Nuclear Bomb Test With Warning Of “Massive Military Response” [VIDEO]

The Daily Beast reports:

Defense Secretary James Mattis threatened military action against North Korea on Sunday, hours after the regime claimed to have tested a hydrogen bomb that can be attached to an intercontinental ballistic missile.

“Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam or our allies will be met with a massive military response—a response both effective and overwhelming,” Mattis said at the White House.

“We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country—namely, North Korea. But as I said, we have many options to do so.”

Thank God that warhawk Clinton didn’t win!

      Iraq, Libya, Syria

I guess THAT kind of hawkishness is OK.

      • Lars Littlefield

Yeah, ’cause she is solely responsible for those three wars. No on else. Just her. All by herself.

      • HZ81

        Who should be President?

      • Karl Dubhe

What do you prefer, a colonial war that kills a few thousand?

Or a world war that kills billions?

No, unfortunately you chose the wrong person for that.

      • stevenj

If you’re looking for somebody to blame how about Republican Allen Dulles?

      • jayjonson

Sounds like a Trump troll to me.

        • DevineBovine

Guess you think I’m making it all up. Shallow

        • Uncle Mark

He is a troll. Just look at his Disqus profile. He’s posted 217 comments with only 86 upvotes. That’s someone who posts quite a number of unpopular comments

          • another_steve

The number of one’s upvotes isn’t an indicator of anything. Popularity isn’t an indicator of anything. Voicing unpopular views, in and of itself, doesn’t make one a troll.

This DevineBovine thing meets the definition of “troll” because he engages in ad hominem. He’s here not to add to the discussion but to insult others.

Not clear to me why Joe hasn’t banned him.

          • Todd20036

Doesn’t matter. I don’t think BP was actually banned either, but enough people blocked him that he got the message.

          • Stephen Elliot Phillips

            Oy. BP is toxic waste

          • Uncle Mark

i agree with you, but most people tend to get frustrated when they’re fighting an uphill battle with their unpopular views, and they will eventually take them elsewhere when they fail to win friends or converts…unless they are a troll, attempting to stir up trouble. Most people tend to have a at least a 1:1 upvote/comments ratio. This guy is almost 1:3…plus looking how he tenaciously rides others, and clearly delighted in pissing others off.

          • another_steve

To be honest, I don’t understand Joe’s policy on banning.

Imo, as soon as any commenter goes ad hominem – starts to insult or attack other people who are here to comment in good faith – that commenter should be banned, period.

I block any and all commenters who engage in ad hominem, with me or with anyone else in these comment threads.

      • ultragreen

She wanted a “no fly zone” over Syria, never mind the Russians, and she supported (and probably encouraged) the overthrow of a democratically elected government in Central America. I also think Hillary was involved in the illegal coup in the Ukraine, that ended disastrously in civil war, but they (people comprising the dominant social cliche of JMG) still think she is such a sweet lovable person.

I assume they mean “if North Korea strikes first” – i.e., fires missiles on other countries or territories first.

Nixon was a creep and a crook, but by gum I’d rather have him in the office than Trump.

          • thatotherjean

Indeed. Nixon was crazy, there toward the end, but he wasn’t stupid enough to get us involved in a nuclear war. I’m not convinced that Trump won’t do just that.

          • Karl Dubhe

I don’t think Nixon was ‘really’ crazy. Just very stressed about having been caught out for who and what he was.

Trump’s nuttier than a jar of Planters Peanuts. He’s very likely to launch to avoid getting caught. Hopefully the military will know not to launch without a formal declaration of war.

    • Treant

With luck, you’ll never know what hit you.

The progression to get to hitting us in Pennsylvania is kind of long, too. NK can’t, and even if they could, wouldn’t as it’ll never have that many warhead/ICBM combinations within a reasonable time frame.

We’d have to hit NK first, bringing China into it. Then refuse to accept the metered response (which we probably would), nuking them back. That would have to accelerate into a full-scale China/US exchange.

You and I die here. Me via third degree burns and building collapse, you from fallout. Sorry about that one.

Now there’s no reason for Russia not to make a move which will probably end in Europe, Russia, China, and the USA launching whatever they have left.

“We are not looking to the total annihilation of a country—namely, North Korea.”

This is a thing we have to have clarification on. This is what life is like now.

  • Ross

    I am confused.

The USA has been conducting atomic/nuclear tests since the 1940s. We would have been OUTRAGED if any other country had told us no.

So what fucking right do we have to tell another country that they cannot test nukes as well?

    • JWC

that was the argument of Iraq or Iran ( whoever had nucular capiblities ) Pakistan and now Korea Its a question not satisfactorially answered

      • Ross

So, in short, it’s OK for white countries to have nukes (France, England) but not not non-white countries?

        My question is serious.

        • Karl Dubhe

          Pretty much, yep.

Kinda like you have the right to carry in some US states, unless you try to do it while black.

        • Ken M

China, NK, Pakistan, India, Iran if you consider all of them “white” or not is opinion. China and NK obviously are not.

        • JWC

As was my response No one should have them !!The Nazi developed them to late the US and the USSR both grabbed as many German technicians as they could to further the development The US developed “little boy ” and “Fat man” and used them . The unsettled arguments have always been the total devastation was not necessary balanced against but it saved countless live ending the war early To my knowledge the US has been the only country to use them in aggression Was it right or wrong that is academic should anyone have them no Are they necessary for the balance of power, depends on who has the power I would prefer to see it used for peaceful means but as long as there are maniac Hawks I don’t see that happening here

          • Karl Dubhe

You’re confusing the missile technology with the nuclear technology.

The Germans stopped their A-bomb project in 1942, Hitler wanted weapons that would be developed in six months, not three years.

There is an argument that they have kept the peace, as the leaders know it’s not just the footsoldiers who will die in the next world war.

          • JWC

I am not now nor ever have been a fan of war It’s a destructive means for one ideology to master another

          • Karl Dubhe

Suicide weapons aren’t used for war.

That’s what nukes are. If enough of them are used, nobody’s going to survive. 🙁

          • JWC

            Whatever

    • Max_1

      EXCEPTIONALISM…
… That is what America has.

    • Tomcat

I agree with you, we have no right to dictate what countries can and can’t have nukes. But we seem to keep trying to go it.
I see no more danger of NK than Israel having nukes.
Either one would use them if attacked hard enough.

    • Treant

There’s a ban on testing, which NK didn’t sign onto. So technically, they’re in the clear.

      But…er…testing can be dangero…um…shut up, that’s why.

    • jmax

Test nukes? We are the only country to actually use them on civilians. I don’t know where we get our feelings of moral superiority.

    • stevenj

All other nations since the 40’s have tested but only the US used 2 of them. After that the buildup was seen as a “deterrent”. NK has been launching rockets over Japan and threatening the entire region. While I am no fan of H or N bombs and wish the world did not have them the combination of the ongoing threats by someone as unhinged as Donald, and testing, is alarming.

    • Tiger Quinn

Before Trump we’d never be the kind of country that would threaten to use them. So our build up was entirely defensive. Now things are different and I expect the rest of the world will start treating us like we’ve been acting – like North Korea.

      • Karl Dubhe

You’ve* never ruled out using them first.

You’ve* never ruled out using them against nations that aren’t armed with nukes.

They are an existential ‘threat in being’ to the rest of humanity. To have them is to threaten everyone with them.

        * as in your government, not you personally.

      • Lars Littlefield

Off Topic True Story: I grew up in a seriously thick devout mormon community. In 9th grade our schools’ drama coach produced one of her spectacular all-musical reviews for a mid-day student production. One of the numbers was The Lonely Goatherd. Scenes of the lyrical images were arranged on rolling platforms pulled on stage as the chorus sang. I was one of the “Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard,” pulled out wearing lederhosen and swilling a stein of what was supposed to be root beer. The other guy on the rolling platform was my best friend and son of the high school principal, Kent. Kent had miraculously finagled two quarts of cold beer for us to drink. As everyone frolicked and danced about we sat and gulped down delicious foamy cold beer in front of the entire faculty and student body. We were also quite baked, having smoked a joint in the green room just before going on stage. We were a hit. Everyone loved us. And no one had a fucking clue.

It was a modest accomplishment, but one I’ve always been proud of. Thank you for indulging me. 😇

    • Outlaw Woman

Though there has been documented co-operation between Iran and North Korea, and Pakistan and North Korea, I doubt either of those two countries would get involved.

Russia and China would probably be relieved to see the end of the Kim dynasty in North Korea …

their main problem would be an American occupying force lodged in North Korea for years (decades) to come.

I foresee North Korea being divided up into Chinese, Russian, American, and South Korean zones (ala post WW-2 Germany).

      • William

China doesn’t want the Republic of Korea (South Korea) gaining control of the entire peninsula. A democratic country on their border wouldn’t go over so well the the Chinese government.

        • Gianni

Can’t blame them. A free Korea would provide a ready escape for Chinese dissidents and a perfect example of how a free country works – right on their doorstep.

        • They really do not Japan declaring itself a nuclear power either — Japan is one year away at most from actually testing a nuclear weapon if it wanted to — and easily could if provoked by North Korea.

        • Outlaw Woman

See, I think China WOULD want an unified Republic of Korea on their border.
China already has a big problem with North Koreans illegally immigratinginto northeast China … and China already has very healthy trade with a prosperous South Korea.

China isn’t really all that “communist” anymore, and South Korea for most of it’s history hasn’t been all that free and democratic anyway.

    • Gianni

No, they couldn’t have. They’ve gotten a good deal of assistance from someone.

      • Lars Littlefield

My money is on Pakistan. They’ve had newkularr warhead-tipped ICBMs for several decades. They need the money. They sold technology (if not actual weapons) to NK for cash a fabulous prizes.

All this worry about North Korea, but in the USA everyone seems blithely unaware of the current hostilities raging between India/Pakistan/China. It’s much worse. And they all three have nuclear weapons, both short range and loaded on ICBMs.

        • Gianni

I don’t think that in the whole of my lifetime, there’s been any period when India and Pakistan weren’t at each other’s throats. I’ve never figured out why? Is it primarily a religious thing? I worked with a Hindu guy who emigrated from India, and he told me once that they absolutely hate the Pakistanis. “They’re Muslim,” he said.

        • UrsusArctos

Early word was about unsecured goods coming out of Ukraine/Donbas/Russia by way of criminal gangs. Not much surprising there. That’s been a fear since the USSR fell apart.

    • Edmund Allin

Honestly, an A-bomb is a relatively simple thing to make – now that we know it can be done and roughly how. Requires a fair bit of work, but it shouldn’t be out of reach of a decent physics undergraduate. The theory is not the issue, but the engineering is, and engineering can be developed. An H-bomb is something else entirely, but if you’ve already got a nuclear weapons program, not out of reach. It took the US about 7 or 8 years to go from one to the other. That it should take North Korea 11 years (if the latest test is indeed an H-bomb), 65 or so years after the US isn’t a huge achievement.

  • SoCalGal20

Interesting turn in the story of the nurse who was unlawfully arrested for doing her job. The patient she was protecting…is a cop. He’s a reserve officer in the Rigby, ID police department and they thanked the nurse for what she did.

    https://twitter.com/thehill/status/904445167045890049

    • ByronK

Ah, of course. Now it makes sense!! The boys in blue protecting their own.

      • SoCalGal20

What? He didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t need protecting. And he wasn’t in uniform at the time. The patient’s police department thanked the nurse for protecting the patient.

        • ByronK

My understanding, and I may be wrong, but he was brought in following a collision. Did they want the sample taken then and there so they could do a switch in case the officer was impaired. It was strange to start with given the aggression but stranger now that we know he’s an officer. What other reason would the police have to react like that unless they were roiding out. Maybe I’ve just read too many stories about police cover-ups. Or it’s the weed. 🙂

          • Lars Littlefield

Here’s my paranoid take on it, also share by other locals: Rigby is about 4,000 people and smack in the middle of what the locals call “Meth Alley.” The officer was obviously working a second job. Probably tired from lack of sleep. Also, to work two jobs and keep his family in food and diapers used meth to stay awake for weeks at a time. It’s rather common. So, the other police officer wanted to check his blood for meth in order to develop defense to prevent him from becoming arrested on drug charges. After all, Payne, the officer trying to arrest the nurse certainly looked like a meth user, himself. Anybody got extra papers? I’m out.

          • SoCalGal20

Nope. His truck was hit by a suspect fleeing police and he was not at fault. No reason for a drug test.

            http://www.newsweek.com/patient-viral-video-nurse-being-arrested-refusing-draw-blood-turns-out-be-659051

          • Lars Littlefield

Understood. But that doesn’t mean he might not have been using meth. Cops of a feather stick together.

          • SoCalGal20

Regardless, he was not at fault in the accident and he wasn’t under arrest. There would be no reason for police to take blood samples. The whole thing is so weird.

          • Lars Littlefield

Weird is the correct word for it. Welcome to Utah (and parts of Idaho and Arizona).

          • SoCalGal20

Found an interesting thread on my timeline. Seems the high speed chase was against department policy. They may have been looking to get something on the truck driver so he couldn’t sue.

            So get a warrant.

          • SoCalGal20

This is the circumstances of the accident. William Gray is the name of the patient.

“The suspect in this incident was fleeing from Utah State Highway Patrol, when he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided head on with Gray’s truck, severely injuring Gray, and killing himself. Officer Gray was flown to the University of Utah’s burn unit where he remains under their watchful, professional, and competent care,” the post added.

Thanks. Maybe I should move to Netflix for a bit. 😉

          • SoCalGal20

Hahaha. The case is weird and under other circumstances I would be open to your theory. In this case there seems to be zero reason for what the police did.

          • Natty Enquirer

It’s definitely weird. The police in Utah do have the ability to take a blood sample without consent when there are probable cause and exigent circumstances. Those judgments are up to the officer(s), to be hashed out later in court if necessary. As far as I know, however, the police do not have the power to force a nurse to do the job, which the Newsweek story claims was the reason for her arrest. The other story I’ve heard is that the officer was going to do the draw and the nurse stopped him, which may have been obstruction depending on the officer’s justifications.

          • SoCalGal20

But as the nurse explained they require a warrant. The patient wasn’t under arrest and didn’t cause the accident. They wouldn’t have been able to even get a warrant and they knew it, thus the threats and intimidation.

It appears the cops may have been trying to cover the asses of the cops inviolved in the high speed chase that caused the accident. Apparently the chase was against protocol and they might have been trying to get the blood sample to use against the truck driver to keep him from suing.

    • Lumpy Gaga

This story required “deep digging” (the press did all the work. Who am I kidding?).

      1) The local cops were hotdogging down the highway, in high-speed pursuit of a suspect.

      2) Suspect is dead, but not before he collided with a truck, sparking a fire, and dying.

      3) That hosp. pt with the super-desirable blood? Not the suspect, but the (now comatose) burn victim/truck driver.

      Lumpy now speculates:

      4) Local cops wanted a “DUI truck driver” narrative to cover up their hotdogging bullshit.

      • SoCalGal20

It’s sure looking that way. Or they at least wanted to discredit the truck driver so he wouldn’t sue.

      • Bad Tom

        Bad Tom continues to speculate:

        5) Finding out he was a fellow cop rained on their parade.

        6) Having all this video go viral REALLY rained on their parade. Only after that happened did the status of the detective & superior change.

Today is Feline Mental Health Awareness Day! Please monitor your animal for signs of mental illness. According to http://www.FelineMentalHealth.com, the signs include:
    (1) strange, erratic, aggressive, or unusually violent behaviour;
    (2) lack of interest in surroundings and/or familiar faces (includes wandering, spotting [males], and prelude to divorce);
    (3) disintegration of personality (includes so-called ‘false-meowing’);
    (4) substance abuse (includes catnip-basing and feline alcoholism); and
    (5) inability to recognize or emulate accepted customary feline behaviour.

The Royal Society for the Preservation of Feline Mental Health recommends that you ALWAYS NEUTER your cats. De-clawing, de-fanging, and euthanasia are other recommended methods for controlling felines with intransigent mental health issues.

One of the reasons the Oakland Hills fire in 1992 spread as fast and far as it did was that the hillsides were covered with eucalyptus.

Reminds me of a story from the Gettysburg campaign. One local Pennsylvania woman made a point of jeering at passing rebel regiments with the US flag sewn across her front. Until one regiment said that Hood’s boys always stormed breastworks when the Yankee flag was on them. She retreated.

It is a good way to relax and enjoy the good people of the US. You will cry for our loss now that our government is filled with bozos but I will not give up on the hard work Mueller is doing. And it doesn’t hurt that the ambassador is such a wonderful, good looking man.

      • SoCalGal20

Glad you enjoyed it! I’ve gotten through the first 4 eps of S1 but I’ll watch some more tonight when I get home.

For those that missed my earlier post, I Am the Ambassador is a Danish series following Rufus Gifford, the American Ambassador to Denmark during Obama’s second term. It’s an interesting look at what an ambassador does (at least in a country like Denmark where we have good relations), as well as a bittersweet look at what was lost with Trump’s “election”. Btw, Rufus is also gay which adds another element of relevance. The second episode of Season 1 is about Copenhagen Pride and how there was a directive from the Obama administration for the embassy to be involved and march. It made me angry to think all that progress is gone with that fucking usurper in the WH.

        • bzrd

Thanks for your summary, I’m still watching the second episode so didn’t want to spend much time with details. Now, back to the program

Keep an eye on the high pressure areas,, they steer the hurricane.
A low pressure area (hurricane) cannot go into a high pressure area, but can ride along it or be turned back by it.
Right now the highs are still favorable for the hurricane turning up coast but it can also go straight for the low in the south east coast.
Just keep an eye on the highs and lows to determine its direction.

Hello all! Did you miss me? Cause I sure missed all of you. So what else did I miss?

Gosh, I go away for a week to deal with a natural disaster/catastrophe and come back to national news to find that Trump is pushing us to the brink of war again? Some things never change.

SO……thank you for the kind words I’ve seen on a few post comments (I’m sure I missed many) as I try to catch up. By way of an update, we are indeed safe, we are in a highrise apartment so were spared the initial devastation. We have a farm outside of Houston, that is not too far from the Brazos river. Roads cut off all week, but was able to make it out today. Had some flooding but nothing major, just the property but it should bounce back (though I worry about a few of the fruit trees). Of course, even though we are outside the 500 year flood plain, they have now described this as a 1000 year flood (thank you climate change that doesn’t really exist according to GOP).

We have family that have had some losses but nothing catastrophic (cars can be replaced with insurance) . Houston is indeed going through much, as is a lot of the Gulf coast in the wake of Harvey. I’ve lived in Houston 40 years (most of my life) have never seen ANYTHING like this. It was like being in the middle of a reality documentary on the end of the world. Stores with NO food (that really does happen) and not getting resupplied, no gas or long gas lines, helicopters everywhere, military, boats on roads we drive weekly. Now it’s sunny and “looks” clear but the disaster is still unfolding as neighborhoods on the West side are deliberately flooded to keep the reservoirs from collapsing which would make Katrina look like a rain shower if that happened.

Anyway, there is much more I could write, what I’ve seen and we’ve done this week to help, the true hardships don’t always make the news. It’s all so exhausting and we’re mentally and physically worn out. But I wanted to just reassure the sweet friends here that we are OK and we’ll all get through this. #HoustonStrong

Big hugs and kisses to all, and while it was interesting to have a break from political news for a week, I’m back and ready for the fight again.

Oh, and of course Trump was here.

And yep, he’s still an asshole.

    🙂

Oh who are we kidding, she’s white. Cult45ers constantly talk about her grace and dignity. Which is weird since she’s been pretty much holed up away from sight since Nov 9th.

You know, one of the most loathsome FLOTUS in my life time was Laura Bush, but she got a pass from me for being a librarian (who, you know, happened to kill a guy.)

            Point being, I’m pretty easy.

But this skank? Trip1 to TX involved a baseball cap embroidered with “FLOTUS”, at which point, you’re just like, “Fuck the shoes. fuck vehicular manslaughter, fuck Barbara Senior’s string of pearls and thank-you notes: get her THE FUCK OUT.”

          • Cuberly

            HA!

If you think about it Melania has been utterly inconsequential in all of this. I mean, can anyone think of a FLOTUS that has been less involved? I sure as heck can’t think of one.

Redefining the norms has had the effect of granting CULT45ers one of their less than charming vices affirmed. Melania is an ornament, best seen and not heard. Seriously, look at her back row ineffectiveness. Heaven forbid someone tell them that veggies are a good thing! They just want pretty arm candy from overseas.

Ah, the good old days when AfterElton kept you up to date on gays in entertainment. No one has stepped in to fill the void so finding out about Teen Wolf gay storylines is hit and miss.

It also means there’s no website to suggest TV shows or movies that might be of interest. L’Age adulte is a French language web series that I enjoyed over the summer – it’s neither “coming-out” nor “gay best friend”. (geo-blocked so you’ll need to apply your VPN skills) BTW, the actor who plays the gay brother is gay IRL.

During football training, Alex gets tackled by his friend Max and suffers a concussion that plunges him into a coma. His fiancée Amélie, his [gay] brother Tom, his sister Lucille-Maude and his father Léonard are in shock. Alex wakes up a few days later, but something has changed.

He’s not adapted to deal with continuous coverage where people can see he repeats himself, avoids committing to specifics and lies. Unfortunately too many people are unable or unwilling to put what he says in context of what’s gone before so that the pattern becomes apparent.

It requires a lot of memory and patience. The dialogue is sparse in the new series, and that takes some getting used to. The other problem is that to get everything out of it, you pretty much have to watch the entire cannon before starting the new series.

Well. CA has these bills pending (the article I pulled them from was from early August so I don’t know if any of these have passed (or not passed) since the article went up but CA is working on becoming a Sanctuary state.

    PENDING CALIFORNIA IMMIGRATION BILLS
Senate Bill 54, by Senate Leader Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, limits cooperation between local and state police and federal immigration authorities and restricts the use of state resources to carry out immigration enforcement.

Assembly Bill 222, by Assemblyman Raul Bocanegra, D-San Fernando, would ask voters to amend Prop. 187, passed in 1994, which imposed harsh penalties on the making, distribution and use of false documents to conceal immigration status.

Assembly Bill 291, by Assemblyman David Chiu, D-San Francisco, prevents landlords from harassing tenants over their immigration status or using it against them.

Assembly Bill 450, by Chiu, would provide workplace protections for undocumented workers.

Assembly Bill 699, by Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell, D-Long Beach, would require schools to protect undocumented schoolchildren by requiring a judicial warrant from immigration officers, among other measures.

  • Blake J Butler

As far as DACA is concerned, any undocumented immigrant that should be deported, it should be the FSOTUS and send her back to Slovenia where she belongs since she does not contribute like the millions of immigrants that supply our way of life, and no marrying rich men that resembles her father does not count as a contribution.

On a silver lining though, any chance the GOP wanted to not be branded as racists and bigots and cruel evil assholes, they shut that window and welded it shut.

However though baby huey has to go otherwise we all going to die soon.

I’m just so revolted that after 8 years of Obama we have this fucking cretan. All those fucking ‘purity’ protest voters-FUCK YOU ALL! I hope you’re proud of what you’ve done-now the American Gestapo have the right to hunt these people who are contributing to our country.

Fuck it, I need another bottle of wine.

    • Blake J Butler

They got onto me today again because they told me people like me shoved Hillary down their throats and refused to support a “progressive” candidate. Because i mentioned that the nomination wasn’t stolen from bernie and that trump benefited from his far left wing supporters that either flat out refused to support her, or for the longest time until long after the primary was over, that they finally were going to support her, like it was getting an amputation like literally are you serious ?

Bunch of latte liberals and a good half of them were independents with posts from the green party and the putin whore stein on their facebook pages.

They could give a shit about the losses people are enduring now, they care more about wall street corruption, super pacs, disposable human rights along with purity candidates for office, and getting geared up for protests on the weekends because protesting is fashionable again, when it shouldn’t have been if people voted, and voted correctly.

All my wine bottles go to make center pieces for my day of the dead fundraiser.

      • FAEN

Assholes who put this horror of a person in power.

        • Blake J Butler

Guilty as sin all of them. Even some of these that voted correctly, their votes were not that loyal, they may screw it up in midterms for third party candidates or a refusal to turn out.

      • SoCalGal20

They’re not really progressives. Not sure what exactly you call them (aside from idiots) but they’re not progressives and they’re not liberals. Also, they’re either falling for or just flat out complicit in Putin’s propaganda machine. Sucks that you have so many of them in your group.

        • Blake J Butler

I’m part of two groups, one flat out called the resistance and another called Hillary 4 America. It hasn’t been this bad until the reality that the year is closing up and midterms and primaries will be beginning and they are coming out and letting themselves be known. Hillary 4 America is more accommodating to me nowadays.

They literally are thinking they get to call the shots for who is a Democrat and who isn’t one, and whoever isn’t one isn’t one that supports Hillary Clinton, and isn’t kissing bernie sanders’s ass.

It’s worship for stein and sanders all that i am hearing about from them. It’s literally a simple group of 25,000 people that the motto is vote blue no matter who, and they are getting pissed off being told to vote Democratic, knowing damn well that they didn’t and jeopardized the very people they claimed to give a shit about with their votes.

          • SoCalGal20

Is this a facebook group? Just leave it if it’s aggravating you that much.

          • Blake J Butler

The group itself is fine, its just these so called bots if you will that come out in certain posts. They haven’t been an issue until now when fall is setting in and the year is starting to come to a close.

It all started today with a 2020 article about the top contenders looking to be Kiersten Gillibrand and Kamala Harris. Hence the independents coming out in droves on these certain posts and congregating there.

We have had an issue with trump bots posting anti-democratic posts on the group page and the admins almost immediately delete them as soon as they are found.

          • SoCalGal20

Ah, well, I think you’re right that at least some of these people are actually bots as well. I see them come out on posts on twitter too. Fucking Russia and their meddling.

          • Reality.Bites

I think it’s disgusting that Russian bots are taking away jobs from American trolls.

I wrote that as a joke, but on thinking of it, there’s a good deal of truth to it. Political trolling used to be the job of Trump supporters (meaning people who became Trump supporters). The Russian bots did a much better job of it.

Something I don’t think I’ve seen raised much, but I can’t possibly be the first – What are the chances he stole the Republican nomination as well? All the polling during the primaries indicated lots of Republicans loathing him. Goodness knows the other candidates were no prizes and all of them had obscene policies and views, but it’s hard to imagine any of them being as grotesquely incompetent and dangerous to the party, country and planet.

These people sat back while he stole their party. Don’t count on them to protect the country.

          • SoCalGal20

Yeah, I don’t know. Early on I don’t think so. Maybe once Trump started winning some primaries?

      • boobert

There is no need to wait for Mueller–there is plenty of evidence Trump has ALREADY violated his oath of office, repeatedly, in myriad ways!!

His GUILT in obstructing JUSTICE is OBVIOUS, and is enough, all by itself, to justify the massive and relentless protests that CAN force Congress to remove him from power!!

The Democrats should do their DUTY to the Republic, to the Constitution and the RULE OF LAW, and get off their ASSES to organize the necessary protests–NOW!!

  • Skeptical_Inquirer

There had been a huge rash lately of columnists tut-tutting the fuck out of liberals for “identity politics.” I think that the columnists should be forced to eat their words.

The GOP is all about identity politics. They always have been. It’s their identity and nothing else.

      • Cuberly

Yeah but when it comes to the right-white, they’ll NEVER acknowledge the perch they’re on. EVER. “I can’t be racist because I told the bag boy at the market to have a nice day.”

They really really really need their detachment, otherwise they’d have to accept the fact they contribute to messed up bullshit on a daily basis in ways they’re far removed from.

    • Cuberly

I see Bernie trollz posting about how letting roe vs wade get overturned, as long as we get single-payer health care, is totes cool. I see them post how identity politics is crippling progressivism…..as they think the worst crisis in the world is student debt, not whether or not a person of color gets killed at a traffic stop.

      Oy…my list could go on…and on….ARGH!

      • fuzzybits

          YES!

          We’re all in this together!

      • SoCalGal20

The dudebros and Berniecrats who believe this shit aren’t progressives and sure as hell aren’t Democrats. They need to get the fuck out of the way. Let’s be real, some of these people are probably plants to stir shit up, they’re not there to actually get candidates elected or anything.

I wonder what they think of a candidate like Randy Bryce who is a Berniecrat (I can’t hold it against him since I basically agree with his positions) but he fucking isn’t throwing Roe v Wade under the bus. Do they consider him a sell out? Not pure enough for Bernie?

        • Cuberly

Oh I honestly think there’s trollz out there stirring up shit. But the problem is some non troll types run with it out of some concept of a simplistic notion of a compromise solution.

It blows my freakin mind when I see commenters online dismiss hard fought rights, and it happens. Hell even Bernie has voiced his displeasure with “identity politics”, the scion of quality that he is…(cough) (cough)….people take their lead from their leaders. Bernie is a fucking knob.

          • SoCalGal20

Bernie has a cult of personality following so whatever he says goes. And he’s just a grouchy old white dude who never actually did much in the Senate and comes from one of the whitest states in the country and a place of privilege. And he does fuck all to educate his followers about identity issues because it’s not important to him. I HATE that he and some of his people have been given significant positions in the Democratic party. The Democratic party is enough of a hot mess without them in the mix.

    • SoCalGal20

“Identity politics” is code for bigotry. And, yes, I am aware there are people on the “left” that say focusing “identity politics” is bad. The notion that “identity politics” is bad, is entirely based in bigotry and/or not understanding what it means. “Identity politics” means gays being able to marry the person they love, not having to worry about losing their jobs for who they are, women being paid a wage equal to men, blacks being able to rent an apartment anywhere they want, immigrants being treated with dignity and respect, and on and on. Identity politics is HUMAN RIGHTS. It is women’s rights. It is worker’s rights. It is LGBT rights. The only thing it isn’t, is pandering to white rage and anxiety.

      • Cuberly

        BINGO!

      • Cuberly

ARGH! That certain inexperienced individuals on the left just don’t fucking get it makes me stroke the hell out. Why why why?

That anyone wouldn’t think the phrase “identity politics” is nothing more than full blown racism, sexism & homophobia blows my mind.

    Great Will Bunch article

Something smelled wrong about the election from the very start. In the weeks before the presidential balloting took place, millions of voters were bombarded with “fake news” about the candidates on Facebook and other social media sites. And when the vote tallies were announced, the nation was shocked by the results. There was scattered unrest, even violence — and loud whispers that the election had somehow been stolen. Some wondered about the role of Cambridge Analytica, the firm founded by a billionaire backer of Donald Trump.

Then, something remarkable — unprecedented, really — took place. The nation’s highest court decided to launch a thorough investigation of what really happened on Election Day. What the justices eventually uncovered was shocking — a scheme to change results from the actual polling places when they were tallied electronically. What happened next was perhaps more surprising: The Supreme Court justices ordered a new national election.

Yes, this scenario actually just played out.

    In Kenya.

OT: The dresses of that time period were pretty but way too many layers and unless it’s winter, it seems like it would be much too hot. The poster has an online shop selling period clothing replicas. I think you can also see why a lot of people really preferred having maids to help dress them.

This why the smarties at Ren Faire dress as peasants while the Queen’s Court suffocates in the summer heat.

They probably save loads of money as well.

        • Natty Enquirer

True. I know some performers who could afford a royal costume (or wear one on occasion) but don’t want to expire on the especially hot days. I joined a friend’s singing group for Faire one year and on the 95-degree day, we sipped Gatorade behind the curtain at every opportunity. Meanwhile, the “travelers” (guests) who had been drinking alcohol in the sun had to be wheeled out.

OT: Joel Olsteen continues to be a massive dickhead with no sense of PR.

    https://www.yahoo.com/news/joel-osteen-tells-harvey-survivors-035858727.html

Pastor Joel Osteen, who has been under fire for his Houston megachurch’s slow response to helping survivors of Hurricane Harvey, on Sunday vowed that God would “pay back” victims for what they lost.

“We’re not going to understand everything that happens, but having a ‘poor old
me mentality’ or ‘look what I lost’ or ‘why did this happen,’ y’know that’s just going to pull you down,” he said in his first sermon at his Lakewood Church since the storm.

Instead, he urged his followers to “turn it over” to God.

“God won’t allow it unless he has a purpose for it,” he said. “We may not see it at the time, but that’s what faith is all about.”

Osteen said having faith will “allow” God to “turn situations around.”

“He’s got you in the palm of your hand,” he said. “He’s working in your behalf right now, behind the scenes, he’s lining up things in your favor.”

Then, he cited a passage from the Bible that describes how God will “restore” what “the enemy” is trying to take. “So let’s don’t have a victim mentality, let’s have a restoration mentality,” he said. “Lord, we thank you, that you’re going to pay back what belongs to us.

    • ZRAinSWVA

“God won’t allow it unless he has a purpose for it” Yeah?
      Then God is an asshole.

    • AmeriCanadian

You know what sermon I would tune into if he were to give it? The one where he talks about his own personal tragedy of losing everything and having no insurance. Now that would be worth listening to.

It’s as if Mattis read Sun Tzu’s Art of War and, point for point, decided to do the opposite. The decision to make the US seem weak and befuddled, making constant grandiose threats, is the kind of thing I’d expect from a narcissist with limited brainpower and a vestigial peepee, but not from Mattis.

This is an actual press release from the agency formerly known as the Environmental Protection Agency. WTAF?!

    • Natty Enquirer

News reporting is always slanted to play up the drama. Otherwise, it is not profitable. But it’s a losing game to go mano-a-mano with the press because you will only feed the drama.

      • SoCalGal20

The EPA release sounds like some shit written by Stephen Miller. That is not their job. Or, well, not until this administration. This isn’t just about “drama”. This is about the complete and thorough dismantling of the agency responsible for environmental protections. It’s about it turning into a propaganda machine and attack dog for Trump and his lackeys. And, it’s about a government agency ATTACKING the press in general and a specific member of the press in particular. Probably because that reporter had the nerve to make a FOIA request wanting to know the connection between the EPA press office and Breitbart.

  • Scout
    • SoCalGal20

Funny you should post that. I just postwd EPA’s specific attack on the AP reporter. Absolutely beyond the pale, not to mention flat out wrong.

Why are the polluted areas called Superfund sites? Is there a logic to that?

Houston, with its oil trade, is a dangerous place now. I fear for all the people who have been in the water.

There was an explosion in Norway some years ago, at a plant that took in chemical waste from the oil tankers. Turns out that they had ILLEGAL chemicals there and it became a big thing.

      Wiki article in Norwegian: https://no.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vest_Tank-ulykken

Wanna bet there’s a bunch of illegal things going on in Houston as well?

      • John30013

“Superfund” was the name of a government program started in the 1980s (I believe) to find the cleanup of large industrial toxic waste sites. It was funded by fees on industrial polluters.

The Trump Administration is in reality a gigantic criminal enterprise operating out of the White House. One of its goals is to maximize Big Business’s profits, even if it means doing so over the sick and dead bodies of the citizenry.

That’s Trump’s “EPA” in a nutshell for ya.

  • Happy_Housewife

I would like to know what the “massive military response” he is talking about would be: The country that owns us is to the north, and one of our longest standing allies is to the south. Any “massive military response” would decimate most of South Korea, and may wreak havoc on areas of Japan and China as well.

If we had a real president, one who didn’t rimjob the military at every chance he gets, we might be able to work our way through that. But we’ll probably end up doing something big, dumb, destructive and expensive.

  • KevInPDX

I’m being kinda dense here, but… how come we keep poking this fat little fucker? Aside form our interest in seeing S. Korea continue to exist why do we even acknowledge this regime? The other countries in the region seem to manage N. Korea just fine. It cant be because N. Koreans are commies because we (GOP) love Russia now (not!) and they’re commies.
