DOJ To Court: Trump Tower Was Not Wiretapped

The Hill reports:

The Justice Department confirmed in a court briefing filed late Friday that neither it nor the FBI has evidence that Trump Tower was the target of surveillance efforts by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election.

The Motion for Summary Judgement was filed in D.C. district court in response to a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit filed by the watchdog group American Oversight, which is seeking government records of surveillance in Trump Tower.

The motion confirms that neither the FBI nor the Justice Department’s National Security Division have records documenting wiretaps as alleged by President Trump in a series of tweets earlier this year.

  • Doesn’t matter. Data after data shows that once a Trump supporter believes something, no amount of observable facts will convince them. You can even have Trump himself say he wasn’t wiretapped but they’d still believe he was. They are in a cult and we are so screwed so as long as we promote a culture that believes all sides are right.

Amusingly, I’ve had my sleep tests the last two nights but one (Wed and Thu), and barely slept, of course. One can’t with two very tight bands on, stuff clipped to your collar, a finger clamp on to test oxygenation and heart rate, and a nasal insert shoved up your nose to test breathing.

So last night I was in bed by 10 PM and sacked until 3 AM. I got up, wandered into the husband’s office (as he was still up) and he’s sitting there with twink porn on and his pants off.

While a good opportunity, it was one of those cases where I wasn’t sick, just tired.

          • Ernest Endevor

Impeachment on what grounds and how? There is no 60 vote majority for impeachment of any kind in the senate where it must come from. Being bonkers doesn’t disqualify him from being president. And if it did, where are the majorities in the house and senate that would be needed to remove him? And remove him how? He may be traitorous but he can’t have committed treason because we’re not technically at war. At least, not with Russia. Our best hope is to contain the harm and vote in a Democratic house in 2018. Unless the Mueller inquiry throws up real crimes with real proof. I think if that were to happen we might see action in congress. Till that time, the junior republicans are rubbing their nubbins raw fapping over the prospect of undoing the New Deal.

          • JWC

the mere fact that he has not held up his end of the bargain in respect to the consistutio Treason am lies

          • JWC

            Nope

          • Ernest Endevor

Believe me, we’re doing what we can. But we’re tightly constrained by laws. And to break everything apart, to stage some sort of coup to get rid of him, would leave us in a worse place. Though it’s agonizing we must do this according to law. I’m an immigrant and aspects of the States still bewilder me. But we’re not a parliamentary democracy. We don’t have alliances that make governments. We have a two party system. Also, we’re not a democracy. We don’t elect the president directly. We’re a constitutional republic. Which might seem like a distinction without a difference but it’s really not.

          • JWC

You probably are but there is so much bitching and negativity on here So much can’t don’t won’t and very little in planning demonstrations and protests

          • Ernest Endevor

Those are going on. And many people are preparing to run. We have deep systemic problems of the billionaires buying willing Republicans to take more seats than they win. But much about the country remains vibrant and as crazy as ever. You should come visit where I live. You’d feel much better. Just remember, we’ve been overtaken by a national catastrophe and people are reacting accordingly. We’ve had the political equivalent of the stock market crash of ’29. It will take time for the dust to settle.

            Excellent posts, Ernest Endevor.
I believe the U.S. is considered a “representative democracy” or a “democratic republic”; also the two-party “system” is not structurally required by any Constitutional provision or other law, but is customary.

    • thatotherjean

Unfortunately, our Constitution gives only a few ways for a sitting president to be removed from office. Primarily, he can be impeached by the House of Representatives, tried by the Senate, and removed from office (or found not guilty and go back to work). The problem is not that Trump hasn’t done things for which he might be impeached, it’s that the party that would have to impeach him–and try him, in this case–is the same party that got him into the office to begin with. They still have things they want from him, and are unlikely to begin impeachment proceedings until they’re absolutely sure they won’t get those things. They’re getting closer, but they aren’t there yet.

Sometimes, as with Nixon, the threat of impeachment is enough to convince a President to resign. Trump won’t even be threatened unless the Republicans give up on him, or Robert Mueller comes up with something that forces them to make those threats..

Other than that, a president can be declared mentally (or otherwise) unfit, by virtue of the 25th Amendment to the Constitution–but the Vice President has to begin the proceedings, and he’s too much of a Trump toady, so far.

Trump might, of course, get bored and quit on his own, or become too ill–mentally or physically–to continue, or die in office–but that’s pretty much it.

So we wait. We wait for Congress, or Trump, or the Vice President, or 2018 midterm elections, which won’t get him out of office, but might, if Democrats gain enough seats, curtail his power to do harm until he can be voted out of office, or until one of those other things happens. Wish us luck.

      • JWC

This party that still has things for him to do also have elections coming up to win. As American commandeered Town hall meetings and pretty well derailed the repeal of ACA do it again A loss of 6 or so seats negates that arguemennt

        • thatotherjean

Americans do protest, loudly. Republican voters, in town halls held by Republican members of Congress, did protest destroying the ACA, and maybe changed to votes of one or two members–enough, anyway, to kill the bill this time. Members of Congress are supposed to represent their constituents; but they don’t, always. We can hope that there will be more Republican voter protests as we get closer to Midterms in 2018. Perhaps, if the Democrats are lucky–and if they get out and vote–those Republicans who don’t listen to their voters won’t be re-elected. But those are some very big “ifs”.

          • JWC

I know that President Obama has far too much class to weigh in on this “President” and just give the shitgibbon ammunition for Twitter, but I would love to be a fly on the wall in the Obama household to hear what he and Michelle think of the moron in the White House.

    • bobbyjoe

I love when pictures come out of Obama and Michelle laughing and having fun somewhere like they’re not thinking of Trump at all because you know it drives the orange baby-man absolutely bonkers batshit crazy.

      • RoFaWh

Does Mr. Orange Baby-man Shitgibbon ever laugh? Or even give a sincere (as opposed to rehearsed) smile?

      From the link:
“The Justice Department confirmed in a court filing late Friday that neither it nor the FBI has evidence that Trump Tower was the target of surveillance efforts by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election.”

“by the Obama administration during the 2016 presidential election”

I think the FBI or Russians have been surveilling trump Tower for years.

    • The_Wretched

I love very specific denials. There’s always other options to the same end.

The denial Trump thinks he has is, “we have no recordings of any kind of over any events taking place at trump tower nor any place that was in some means of communication with trump tower for any times whatsoever.”

  • Gustav2

    Was it the Russians?

It was the last Sponge Bob backpack. Get a grip, that’s important stuff and of course she’s justified in pulling a gun.

How did we even get the news before videos from our phones. I wonder who will use this one to sue.

Some people lose their senses of perspective far too easily.

        • That assumes they had a sense of perspective to begin with.

      • canoebum

Meh. That whackjob in Florida shot a kid dead at the SevenEleven for playing his music too loud. When someone actually gets shot over a notebook for their kid, that’ll be news. This is just business as usual in DeploraWorld. The Michigan legislature wanted exactly this sort of thing to happen, otherwise they wouldn’t have passed the laws to allow it.

    • barrixines

Could I send over a ream of college ruled paper? I do hate to see people in desperate need like this. My donation to starving African orphans with cancer could wait another month.

    1. Donnie makes up something….or Bannon feeds him a lie.
    2. Cult45ers go nuts and run with it. Donnie takes it as positive reinforcement and LOVES it.
    3. Donnie holds rally repeats the lie, crowd goes wild.
    4. Donnie elaborates on lie, MSM rolls-eyes and covers it like it’s actual news because Donnie’s administration is quite literally sans accomplishments outside of providing another daily installment of As the Stomach Churns – Reality Show.
    5. Lie proven wrong after a waste of a review or investigation.
    6. Go back to #1.

    Today’s GOP!

There’s also the mini-cycle within the other cycle.
      1. Fox News says something stupid and outrageously false.
      2. Trump watches Fox News then tweets what he watched.
      3. Fox News reports the tweets as news that vindicates them.

      • Cuberly

  • That_Looks_Delicious

I’m revising Dante’s Inferno. Here are the new circles of Hell:

1st circle – People who didn’t bother to vote; Comey (he’s going to have to do some time for that letter)
2nd circle – People who voted third party; Bernie bros and assorted other “purists”; Debbie Wasserman-Schulz, Anthony Weiner and every Dem that committed a stupid fuck-up during the election
3rd circle – The mainstream media that gave Trump all that free airtime and spent the whole year indulging in false equivalencies and fretting about e-mails just for ratings
4th circle – Everybody that voted for Trump
5th circle – Caitlyn Jenner, Peter Thiel, Log Cabin Republicans
6th circle – Christie, Rubio, Perry, Giuliani, Priebus and every Republican that capitulated to Cheetohlini knowing he was a disaster-in-waiting
7th circle – Putin’s army of trolls and bots
8th circle – Putin, Julian Assmange and The Trump family themselves and their inner circle
9th circle – Everybody associated with Fox News and Breitbart

    http://yourcontactinflorence.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/Sandro-Botticelli-map-of-hell.jpg

    • Reality.Bites

10th circle – Bill Purdue. Because none of those people have done anything nearly bad enough to have to put up with him for eternity.

    • kareemachan

I can go with this. I might change a circle or two, but…

  • Tom000

More worrisome is the moron’s misuse of the word “McCarthyism”.

  • Phillip in L.A.

What about the NSA? Not that I think it happened, but if one reads between the lines of this very-carefully worded statement…. I wonder who signed the Declarations or Affidavits in Support of Motion for Summary Judgment?

Goddam Dodgers look like they are finished for the season–I wonder if they can even win 100 games this year

    • stevenj

I’ve been wondering if the Giants could lose 100 games this year..

      • Phillip in L.A.

Yeah, but you know what? The Dodgers didn’t exactly steamroll the Giants either, in their last series (they did win the series, but it was a struggle the whole way). It seems like they have been struggling to lose through most of the second half of August! ;-(

  • billbear1961

Which means Dump LIED–he slandered President Obama–because he said evidence had come to light, that it was a FACT.

The racist dictator–the DEFILER of the Republic, of justice, and the rule of LAW–is a proven pathological LIAR–it never stops, which means he is always UNFIT for the presidency! He has repeatedly obstructed justice! He has begun to use his pardon powers to undermine the rule of law! He is using the presidency to enrich himself and his family! He is crippling the Executive branch by leaving vacant 80% of posts that need filling; for 60% he has not even selected candidates for the Senate’s consideration!

Even without what Mueller will uncover, we already have MORE than sufficient reason to DEMAND his removal from power!

A COMPETENT opposition party–loyal to the Constitution–would ALREADY be organizing massive and relentless protests to DEMAND his removal and a thorough investigation of 2016’s COMPROMISED election. They would also be demanding reforms to make sure all future elections are SECURE!!

    Well, Democratic party–WELL?!
