John McCain Blasts “Poorly Informed And Impulsive” Trump In WaPo Op-Ed: Congress Doesn’t Answer To You

John McCain is out of fucks to give. He writes:

We can fight like hell for our ideas to prevail. But we have to respect each other or at least respect the fact that we need each other.

That has never been truer than today, when Congress must govern with a president who has no experience of public office, is often poorly informed and can be impulsive in his speech and conduct.

We must respect his authority and constitutional responsibilities. We must, where we can, cooperate with him. But we are not his subordinates. We don’t answer to him. We answer to the American people.

We must be diligent in discharging our responsibility to serve as a check on his power. And we should value our identity as members of Congress more than our partisan affiliation.

  • bambinoitaliano

How about just come right out and say the shit gibbon should be impeach Senator McCain?

    • FAEN

      Party above country-the GOP way.

    • AtticusP

Fox “news” would just blame it on Senator McCain’s brain tumor anyway, and the Trumpettes would nod their heads.

    • Skokieguy [Larry]

HuffPo headline: “Fox News Poll: Americans Think Donald Trump Is An Unstable, Dishonest, Immoral Bully”

Let me say that again: FOX News Poll

    • Gerry Fisher

On the one hand, I agree with you. On the other hand, if Congress returns to functional committees doing reasonably effective legislative work, which is at the heart of this very limited politician’s essay, then impeachment becomes more possible.

  • bkmn

Glad to see someone finally standing up to the bully in the White House.

    • Todd20036

Too bad it’s someone who sucked up to said bully for years and years, even after the bully denigrated McCain for getting captured.

Now excuse me while I step in here and vote for whatever brainfart Trump proposed today.”

  • Ninja0980

Will you be voting no on Trump’s upcoming judges, several of whom are going to be confirmed to seats that were kept open under Obama for years?
If not, then STFU about Trump.

Tony Schwartz, ghostwriter, “The Art of the Deal”

  • Tawreos

Nice words John, but I get the feeling you will still vote the way he tells you to most of the time.

  • james1200

Again, I’ll say that I can’t believe that the voices of reason in our country are now John McCain, Joni Ernst, Orrin Hatch and the senator from Alabama, Richard Shelby, who I’m convinced is the ghost of a dead confederate general. I don’t know what’s happening anymore.

For those who need a musical interlude…

McCain does this kind of thing periodically and then goes right back to voting straight party line. Actions speak louder and all that, John.

    prelude to a govt shutdown

  • BeaverTales

One of the reasons the executive branch oversteps is because Congress doesn’t do their jobs (aka listening to their constituents and legislating). Nature abhors a vacuum and so does government. The Cheetoh in chief exploits their inability to compromise and work together.

    • RoFaWh

One important issue: the government is not in place to impose this or that sectarian moral code on the population, nor to influence the natural evolution of society. Stick to the real work: building highways, hospitals, asylums, sewers, and sewage treatment plants. Also passing laws to curb the widespread grifting by fake preachers.

I thought they called him that at this point, because just like the horse, he craps wherever he clomps

      • Tawreos

I’d prefer he tried to be less of a maverick and more of a patriot.

  • Lazycrockett

Its going to be interesting to see how much power the Executive Branch loses in this administration and Congress is more than happy to take up the slack.

    • Gustav2

Do we have a legislative branch that can govern? They have been acquiescing to the executive for a century and don’t have the muscle memory.

      • Mike__in_Houston

“…if the wizard is a wizard who will serve…”

    • Uncle Mark

Yet the Congressional Republicans in the House seem quite fractured. They’ll be happy to take up the slack, but will they be willing to take the blame when it all goes to hell under their control? I keep remembering the end of W’s term with the Republicans running ads about “taking America back.” (Translation: “Vote GOP to take America back from the GOP”…followed by my brain aneurysm)

  • KevInPDX

TOO bad ol’ John McC didn’t have that brain surgery a long time ago!

    • Mike__in_Houston

Yeah, preferably before he inflicted that half-term half-wit from Alaska on the country…

      • jmax

        Half-term half-wit. Hahahaha. Good one.

    • mpatreyu

Sorry but totally inappropriate. We are right to be skeptical of anyone who is viewed as the other side suddenly beginning to make sense. But, I do believe that when finally backed into a deep enough corner, the conscience might come out. We are seeing this happen slowly because of the absurdity in the White House. Whenever things go extremely bad or extremely good you will often see members of one side or the other move closer to their ‘foes’. When this happens I think we need to be a bit more accepting and less critical.

As for the brain surgery, having been misdiagnosed with terminal cancer (turns out it wasn’t terminal) I spent almost a year thinking that it was until another option appeared. Considered clean now but I wouldn’t wish that feeling on anyone and flip comments about his situation I can’t agree with.

      • Jonathan Smith
      • barrixines

Split between cheering that the cancer wasn’t terminal and shocked that you spent so long under a misdiagnosis. I hope you are doing well there – you must be mentally as tough as old boots to come out of a situation like that in good shape.

        • mpatreyu

Thank you. It is a very long story but I am 7 years out now and have pretty much mentally recovered. I’m down one lung and it was well worth the price.

          • barrixines

Down one lung – so physically tough as old boots too.

      • Derrick Johns

Very interesting comment, mpatreyu. And very insightful. I’ve been thinking about this for the last few months: to take sides with conservatives is awful for me. I don’t want to do it. But we have a fascist in the White House–what does a liberal, conservative or independent do?

        • mpatreyu

I don’t think it is taking sides. It’s just that you are finding that you agree with them on something. You aren’t changing anything about what you believe.

  • Uncle Mark

Where’s his lil’ echo, Lindseybelle…or is she less inclined to speak out because she’s expected to live long enough to run for yet another term?

          Funny how that happens.

These fuckards are looking to gut CHIP. FUCKING CHIP!!!!!! If god damn Hillary Clinton and Newt fucking Gingrich can get together to create the Childrens Health Insurance Program then it is TRULY bipartisan. These are kids! Philadelphia isn’t dull, it only seems that way by dint of its location right next to exciting Camden, New Jersey. Horseshit is less offensively odiferous than pigshit. 2°C outside is less unpleasant than –12°C outside. And this what McCain writes seems (almost) partially sane and thoughtful relative to the flume of babyishly, willfully, proudly, arrogantly ignorant, self-serving bilge spewing from every other Republican from Trump down (up?). McCain’s pretty words are just kinder, gentler bulk wrap.

For just one thing: “defense” spending is “woefully inadequate”? It’s enormously, vastly, overwhelmingly bloated. It’s more than China, Saudi Arabia, Russia, United Kingdom, India, France, and Japan, combined. It’s about 16% of federal spending. It’s about half of all discretionary spending. That’s obscene on its own, without even factoring in what all that so-called “defense” actually entails: inflicting on other countries a particularly nasty, expensive, bloody, unstable form of perpetual chaos and USA-dependence, and calling it macaroni “freedom”.

Oh, and where was all McCain’s pious chagrin when his craven party refused a hearing or vote on President Obama’s Supreme Court Justice nominee? Where was McCain’s sanctimony when his bought-and-paid party of bigots crowed about obstructing Obama being priority № 1, or when Trump very clearly showed and told us exactly who and what he is before the election? Where were these wheedling calls for cooperation and respect as McConnell, Ryan, Pence, Cruz, Carson, De Vos, Pruitt, Pai, Conway, Bannon, Huckabee-Sanders, and all the rest of them have been gleefully torching everything that at least theoretically made America respectable?

    Oh yeah. That.

McCain has had the opportunity to place country over party myriad times during his long career in the Senate. He has failed every single time and he has hurt us more than just about anyone by one simple act: He propelled Sarah Palin onto the national stage. For that alone I will NEVER forgive him.

      • Lars De

Her presence really help to start the ball rolling on just how low the expectation bar could be set for a national politician. It was already much lower than it ever should have been when she came along and broke the bar altogether. She wore her ignorance like a badge of honor. It was never her fault for not knowing, it was the media’s fault for asking in the first place. Had she never happened I’m not totally sure that we’d have the ignoramus that we do today.

    • Gerry Fisher

      >For just one thing: “defense” spending is “woefully inadequate”? It’s enormously, vastly, overwhelmingly bloated.

I think it badly needs an audit. On the one hand, its budget is bloated. On the other hand, there seems to be a problem in basic upkeep, especially in the nuclear arsenal (for more info, see Rachel Maddow’s “Drift”). The money doesn’t seem to be getting to all the right places.

The barbs about Trump’s imaginary bone spurs in his heels clearly eat at the man’s mind. President Thinskin Liar.

      Man used very loosely.

I love the term “problematic”. Ya think? His whole presidency is “problematic”. 🙁

If you can appreciate the childhood fairy tale of “King Midas and his “midas touch” Think of Trump as “King Exlax” and take it from there

        • RoFaWh

          IOW, TRUMP IS SHIT.

          So very, very true.

    • PickyPecker

Hard to keep up with the shifting storylines in this plot. Time to turn the channel.

Ya know, I do remember that soap…but I had to look it up to see if your picture was a play on words…that really WAS the title. Wow.

        • PickyPecker

I only remember it as my grandmother would NOT miss an episode. Even stopped her cleaning to catch the show. Of course she always told everyone she didn’t watch television during the day, so us little Peckers were sworn to silence. She also watched Dark Shadows. lol

Oh look, John McCain is being “mavericky” again.

        As you should. He’s awful.

It’s such a tight competition! There’s Price at HHS who is arguing that Obamacare Medicaid expansion…

…has worsened the opioid crisis! [When there’s zero evidence of this…rather evidence the other way]

        And Pruitt at EPA.
And Dr Stabby at HUD (Good luck rebuilding, Houston!)
And Betsy “Duh” Vos at Education.
And Zinke giving away OUR public land, at Interior.

Disorderly conduct and demonstrating inside the Capitol building.

Sessions is using the court system to settle a personal vendetta. Sounds like his boss.

        • RoFaWh

The silver lining: we have learned more about what pisses Sessions off. Criticism!

Pink hat, it’s about oppressive messaging.

    • RoFaWh

      Your language insults ferrets.

  • Jefe5084

Well, I am not convinced. We’ll see what McCain does. He likes to sound reasonable, but his actions and sounds he makes often don’t match.

    • Tomcat

I thin he and a few others have had enough of trump.

      • RoFaWh

They’re figuring out (or admitting) now what was obvious well over a year ago.

    • UrsusArctos

Nothing will change until GOPers see that ABSOLUTELY none of their scams plans can proceed. The moment that happens, things will get nastier than the Ides of March in a heartbeat.

Nice of you to realize this now, John. Too bad it didn’t happen much, much earlier.

  • Joe in PA

We must be diligent in discharging our responsibility to serve as a check on his power….

    When ya gonna start? Hmmmm?

  • scorpiomike

Shorter John McCain: Please forget that I helped bring on this mess that is Trump as President. Let me now say and do what I should have been doing long ago.

  • boobert

I try to avoid fox, but sometimes I need a reality check to remind me just how stupid they and their viewers are. The latest is complaining how President Obama will cost taxpayers 1.1 million for security for the whole year 2018. Typical fox makes no mention of the other former presidents, or the crazy expenses of the current one .https://twitter.com/FoxNews/status/903559687701975041

    • Tomcat

Think what the cost will be if trump is not impeached, too protect his shitty ass. Obama is a bargain.

    • RoFaWh

Obama could trademark his name and visage, then start selling straw-stuffed life sized effigies of himself, complete with sets of darts for throwing at it.

Advertise it as including “holy darts to defeat the demon Obama”, among other insane lines, and start profiting from the sheer stupidity of the deplorables.

After a moment’s thought: the whole reason the right keeps harping on Obama? It’s all one big deflection from the sheer catastrophe that Donald Trump is. And the right knows, in their hearts (or what pass for hearts), that Trump is a catastrophe.

Party over country, and the devil take the hindmost!

Trudeau should extend an offer to the blue states adjoining Canada to join that country. The lawyers would hate it because the legal system isn’t the same. the fundies would hate it because every carton of ordinary whole milk is boldly labeled “HOMO”, and the sheer crazies would hate it because there are laws against hate speech, including iirc hateful sermons.

He will do a total 180 the next time Trump fires a missile at something.

  • netxtown

Now that McCain can see the writing on the wall – he gets noble. Sorry Johnny. You got way too much republican dirt on your hands.

  • slp0923

Congress hasn’t answered to the American people in a long time mostly because the American people are generally too passive (or uneducated) to care. Now he’s getting a set of balls? Fuck that. He’s part of the problem since he’s surely not providing a solution.

  • David in Palm Springs

So Republicans have to be at death’s door in order gain a conscience. Good to know.

    • MBear

Thats not a conscience. Thats regret

  • OdieDenCO

“We must respect his authority and constitutional responsibilities. We
must, where we can, cooperate with him. But we are not his subordinates.
We don’t answer to him. We answer to the American people.”

that whole paragraph is bullshit. donny deserves no respect because he is not carrying out his constitutional responsibilities. There is no cooperation with nazi. they must be opposed at all cost. And John, you and you gop ilk have not answered to the American People for a long time. you sold you souls and integrity to the oil, religion, banking, pharma, timber…. industries for the love of a money!

  • MBear

Shuddap, old man. You built this. Too little, too late.
Just fade away into tumor hell knowing your legacy is that you helped install this perverted system that set this man baby in charge of the cuntry you ‘fought’ for, suffered for, and believed in…before you sold it out for your own petty gains.

  • Highmoremotel

Does that mean republicans will stop Donald’s Obamacare cuts to enrollment? The people have spoken (shouted) quite clearly to stop f**kin with it and improve it. Nah. Bluster…bloviated bluster.

  • James

Too bad John McCain was too interested in maintaining his own grip on power to say something *before* Trump became president. McCain owns a large portion of the blame for this.

  • Macbill

Is Trump still happy McCain made it back for the vote?

  • Nowhereman

Turn up your hearing aid, John. The American People are screaming for impeachment.

  • Hank

It seems like McCain’s testicles have descended again!!! They seem to go up and down over the years. So sometimes I can agree with him, like now, but the rest of the time he has NO cajones!!!

  • Jeffrey

Would have been great if McCain had run out of fucks to give a decade or so ago.

  • jonfromcalifornia

McCain always votes in lock step with his Party when it comes to things like judicial appointments so I would take what he says with a grain of salt.

  • JCF

“John McCain is out of fucks to give.”

Fucks to give, and Time, are directly correlated.
